The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE); (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR; (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models; and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations.

This project aims to reduce ma...ternal and infant mortality in typhoon-ravaged Eastern Samar and three urban slum communities in Metro Manila in the Philippines by addressing the lack of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, such as family planning, skilled birth attendants, emergency obstetric care and newborn care, as well as the lack of community understanding of safe motherhood practices. To address these needs, this initiative aims to establish an integrated network of four, non-profit MNCH clinics delivering services and outreach. Project activities include: (1) conducting information and education campaigns on safer MNCH issues; (2) training clinic medical staff on quality care standards, and up-to-date MNCH issues, knowledge, and practices; (3) setting-up and opening four MNCH clinics; (4) training women, youth and other marginalized groups in human rights and gender equality to enable behavioural changes that promote safe practices; and (5) produce and distribute public engagement resources on MNCH (print, online, video, toolkit) for use in Canada. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 16,000 people, including approximately 6,400 children. In addition, more than 171,000 are expected to benefit indirectly from this project. Inter Pares is implementing this project in collaboration with the local partner Likhaan Center for Women's Health.

The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI).

The project aims to empower ad...olescent girls in the Philippines through the provision of comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health services. In the Philippines, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues are arguably the most significant impediment to women's empowerment. The country has the highest fertility rate in Southeast Asia, with women in the lowest wealth quintile having an average of 5.2 children, and with over 22% of women bearing children before the age of 19. Sexual Health and Empowerment (SHE) Philippines is addressing these issues by providing at least 85,000 women and girls, men, and boys with improved access to SRHR services. SHE is expected to indirectly benefit 270,000 people situated in conflict-affected and disadvantaged regions in the Philippines. It provides institutional support to women's rights organizations working on SRHR and gender based violence in the Philippines. The project also supports the implementation of the Government of the Philippines' Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law.

The project's objective is to ...establish a sustainable and cost-effective model of delivering training, providing continuing mentoring, coaching and outreach for continuing professional development in emergency care and access in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). It builds on the model initiated by the University of Western Ontario under the Muskoka Initiative, directly addressing the ability of health care providers in district hospitals and the health centers to care for women, infants, and children presenting with complications before, during, and after birth. This includes ensuring sustainability through the development of a cadre of well-trained professionals to continue the training and mentoring of other MNCH providers in the future. Activities include: (1) delivering workshops and short-term training sessions with MNCH mentors and coaches; (2) delivering workshops with nursing and midwifery faculty to integrate enhanced MNCH, gender and health concepts in the pediatric nursing and midwifery curriculum; and (3) providing support to strengthen programs in pediatric nursing and midwifery. It is expected that by the end of the project (or soon thereafter), the majority of health care providers in the targeted areas of each country are able to provide improved emergency care to pregnant women as well as mothers of babies and newborns, and have a network of ongoing support. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of 3,300 women, 1,800 men, 670 boys and 630 girls in targeted areas of Rwanda and Burundi needing emergency obstetrical and pediatric care, as well as the health care providers that are receiving the training. Because of the security situation in Burundi, activities there are currently on hold.

This project will examine how ...to strengthen the Bajenu Gox Initiative's contribution to improving maternal and child health across Senegal. Former President Abdoulye Wade founded this community-based health worker program to train women to be leaders in reproductive health. Based on the Wolof term for godmother, the Bajenu Gox Initiative provides support to women during the prenatal, delivery, and post-natal periods. It also provides advice about caring for children under 5. Community support for womenThis project aims to improve the Bajenu Gox Initiative's long-term stability at the community level and establish systems that will allow the program to scale up nationally. Researchers will use a community development approach based on a gender and social equity perspective to examine how to enhance the initiative's contribution. The research is structured in two phases: -literature searches on holistic community-based maternal and child health approaches that have been tested in Senegal and other African countries, and possibly in Canada-intervention research based on the findings in this literatureThe project team will share the results through-situation assessment and economic feasibility studies-training materials-a guide on how to effectively manage the initiative-documentary to highlight the initiative's impacts -scientific publications -presentations at international conferencesInnovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project aims to contribut...e to the reduction of maternal and child mortality amongst vulnerable women and children, including adolescent girls, in targeted underserved remote areas of Bangladesh, Ghana, Haiti, Nigeria and Senegal. The project works in these five countries to improve the quality, availability and utilization of essential maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The project also works to strengthen the Canadian public's understanding of the reasons behind Canada's global investments in MNCH and SRH. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care-seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, and providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; and (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government on health resources and planning of services. Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), as well as with Plan International offices in the project's five targeted countries, local governments, and local NGOs.

The project seeks to improve t...he accessibility, quality and use of sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls and boys in the Kédougou region of Senegal. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education is central to this project's approach in order to provide young people, especially young girls, with the tools they need to protect themselves against sexual and sexist violence, including female genital mutilation. Project activities include the following: (1) carrying out activities to raise public awareness among parents, local elected officials, and traditional and religious leaders; (2) carrying out community information activities and targeted training activities for adolescent girls and boys in the communities and schools; (3) conducting advocacy campaigns aimed at government bodies, with the support of civil society organizations. The anticipated number of direct beneficiaries is 30,000 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years (50 percent of them girls), and the number of indirect beneficiaries is 75,000 (50 percent of them women and girls). To implement this initiative, two organizations—Crossroads International and ActionAid International Senegal—along with two local partners—the Association pour la Promotion de la Femme Sénégalaise (APROFES) and the Coalition Nationale des Associations et ONG en Faveur de l'Enfant (CONAFE)—will use their extensive experience in the area of protecting women's and girls' rights in Senegal and reducing gender-based violence and sexual and sexist violence.

This project works to engage y...oung Senegalese leaders and stakeholders in research and policy dialogue to help improve adolescent girls' access to youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. The project aims to examine the link between gender-based violence (GBV) and broader gender inequalities, and address policy shortcomings related to adolescent girls' health and rights. Project activities include: (1) researching the links that exist between adolescent girls' vulnerability to GBV and SRHR; (2) translating findings into products and tools, and applying these findings to address negative gender norms and practices; (3) raising awareness and engagement of community organizations that work against the root causes of GBV; and (4) supporting the development of collaborative and transformative youth leadership skills for adolescent girls to overcome social barriers. The project expects to involve up to 400,000 adolescent girls and 100,000 adolescent boys between the ages of 10 and 16 in its research, dissemination of findings, and engagement activities. The project also works to provide training to over 100 young community leaders to mentor 2,000 adolescent girls to effectively exercise their sexual and reproductive and health rights.

The project aims to advance th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls, reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and support advocacy for SRHR in Sierra Leone and Malawi. For adolescent girls in Sierra Leone and Malawi, the rate of maternal mortality and SGBV is very high. The project provides support to SGBV survivors, including clinical services, legal services, and advocacy, in addition to conducting education sessions on SGBV prevention and referral. The project works to strengthen the capacity of healthcare practitioners to provide high quality, gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and rights-based SRHR services. Project activities include: (1) providing training for staff that is tailored to the specific health needs of adolescents; (2) creating safe spaces for adolescents to receive SRHR services in private; and (3) working with healthcare practitioners on national health objectives. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, healthcare institutions are better able to respond to the SRHR needs of women and girls, empowering them to live healthy lives and make informed choices around their health and rights.

The project aims to reduce the... prevalence of child early and forced marriage (CEFM) in Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone. It works to reduce CEFM by enabling girls to decide their own futures and fulfill their equal human rights. Project activities include: (1) establishing/refurbishing physical safe spaces in existing community structures and equipping them with age-appropriate materials; (2) identifying female and male gender equality (GE) community champions using a participatory approach; and (3) conducting dialogue workshops between trained Civil Society organizations (CSOs) and government officials to understand the issues and challenges in addressing CEFM. It is expected the project reaches over 25,900 direct beneficiaries (11,400 girls, 6,700 boys, 3,800 women, 4,000 men) in the Western Area Rural and the Kailahun Districts of Sierra Leone, and the Cascades and Hauts-Bassins regions of Burkina Faso. Key groups include girls, boys, women, men, traditional and religious leaders, women- and girl-led community groups, Civil Society organizations, service providers, sub-national, national, and regional government stakeholders.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for women and adolescent girls in Francophone West Africa, with a particular focus on Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Niger. The project seeks to increase demand for and use of sexual and reproductive health services by increasing knowledge of SRHR among women and adolescent girls and by reducing gender-related barriers to seeking these services by working with men, boys and cultural leaders in addition to women and adolescent girls. The project also expands access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion and post-abortion care. In addition, the project develops and implements a regional strategy to contribute to improved SRHR for women and adolescent girls. Project activities include: (1) training 520 health care workers to provide quality and youth-friendly health services; (2) establishing and deploying eight mobile health units; and (3) conducting events and outreach activities on SRHR, including contraception. An estimated 319,573 women and adolescent girls are expected to benefit from services and outreach activities, and 115,679 women and adolescent girls are expected to be provided with modern contraception.

Implementing comprehensive, co...mmunity-focused primary health care is a major challenge in post-conflict regions such as South Sudan and neighbouring Northern Uganda. South Sudan is recovering from two decades of civil war that have destroyed education and health infrastructure. Torit Hospital, one of the major hospitals in the region, is poorly staffed and lacks specialists and basic equipment. The situation is similar in Northern Uganda. In the District of Gulu, the burden of disease has largely been managed through St. Mary's Hospital Lacor. This region has not been able to achieve the progress in maternal and child health that has been reached in the central part of Uganda. This project assesses the implementation and scale of community-focused reproductive and child health interventions in post-conflict settings. It focuses on establishing evidence to promote sustainability and resilience, with the goal of ensuring access to essential health services by vulnerable populations. The researchers will explore strategies for improved maternal care and child nutrition services, cervical cancer screening, and support for women's empowerment through outreach efforts from the two hospitals. Research findings will be validated through ministries of health at the local, district, and national levels to optimize engagement and to encourage adoption of the project's recommendations to strengthen systems. The results of the study will directly inform the ministries of health in South Sudan and in Uganda on related interventions, including a scalable model for improved community-based services. This will address barriers to interventions, reduce maternal and child mortality, and extend the reach of health services to communities that have faced shocks and stressors. This is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre. Objectives /

Supported by Canada, the Unite...d Kingdom, the European Union, Sweden, and the United States, the Health Pooled Fund aims to deliver basic health services to those most vulnerable (particularly women and children) in eight of South Sudan's former ten States. The project aims to strengthen government systems, principally at the national and county levels, and to improve the health of women, newborns, adolescents, and children in this fragile state setting. This project builds on previous support to the Health Pooled Fund by extending coverage to new geographic areas, as well as by increasing the focus on nutrition and community-level service delivery. The needs of women and children are prioritized through a focus on safe motherhood, reproductive health, treatment of childhood diseases, and an increased emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health commitment to improve the health and rights of women and children.

The project aims to increase t...he availability of skilled health care providers, especially midwives, in order to reduce maternal and infant mortality in South Sudan. The project builds on results from two previous projects: Training Midwives and Deploying Midwives in South Sudan. It supports six national training institutes delivering midwifery and nursing education in South Sudan, where a total of 850 health workers, including 650 midwives, are expected to complete training under the project. Project activities include: (1) developing a new curriculum for nurses and clinical officers; (2) obtaining the equipment required and improving the ability of the faculty members and administrative staff at the training institutes to teach and manage the midwifery and nursing programs; (3) mentoring of students and health care providers by international and national UN volunteer midwives during clinical practice to ensure the application of their skills; (3) training given by doctors working in health facilities to encourage a team approach in the provisions of midwifery and obstetric services; and (4) improving the ability of the Ministry of Health to manage and regulate the education of midwives and the ability of South Sudan's national and state-level Nursing and Midwifery Associations to advocate and promote their professions. The project is implemented in partnership with the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM). CAM will provide direct peer to peer mentoring support and technical expertise from practicing Canadian midwives and midwifery educators. In addition, the Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium will help to strengthen regulatory and licensing frameworks for the midwifery profession, and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada will provide technical expertise in the updating of the curriculum and training modules in obstetrics and gynecology for doctors and medical officers.

This project aims to empower w...omen and girls in South Sudan to make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, free from discrimination, coercion and violence. This is done by enhancing the availability and quality of sexual and reproductive health services in targeted communities, as well as working with community leaders and members to positively influence attitudes and social norms related to sexual and reproductive health, rights and health services. Project activities include: (1) establishing eighteen static and mobile sexual and reproductive health clinics; (2) engaging 60 community-based sexual and reproductive health promoters to create awareness and mobilize communities to demand services; (3) mapping and disseminating relevant rights and gender equality policy documents in targeted communities; and (4) training 180 volunteers as sexual and reproductive health and rights promoters in three selected communities. The project is expected to reach over 34,000 women and adolescent girls through the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services, and will contribute to improving the health, rights and status of many women and adolescent girls in South Sudan.

This project aims to contribut...e to the empowerment of women and girls in South Sudan by enabling them to make their own decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health and rights in a more peaceful environment. Increasing knowledge, shaping positive attitudes and practices, and challenging norms help support women's and girls' agency and decision-making power. Project activities include: (1) producing a radio programme to provide fact-based education on sexuality and family planning; (2) including storylines about sexual and reproductive health and rights and how these relate to violence and conflict in one of BBC Media Action's popular radio dramas; (3) training and supporting local media organizations on to how to report and produce coverage that reflects the world as seen through the eyes of women as well as men, with the goal of improving women's standing in their communities; and (4) training and supporting community groups to discuss topics presented in radio programs, such as domestic violence and contraception, and identify how lessons learned apply to their local community. Together these activities help increase community members' knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights—including the negative impacts of gender-based violence and violence against women and girls—while contributing to increased support for women and girls to control their own reproductive decision-making and to access appropriate health and support services.

Quality Improvement for Matern...al and Newborn Health in Mtwara Region, Tanzania (IMCHA)

This project will provide evid...ence for how systems-wide quality improvements can enhance maternal and newborn health outcomes at the district, health facility, and community levels in Tanzania.Healthy women, healthy babiesMaternal and newborn health outcomes in southern Tanzania's Mtwara region are poor despite 70% of births occurring at health facilities. Recent research in the region found that maternal and newborn mortality rates were similar when comparing home births with health facility births. This suggests a clear need for improved quality of skilled care in health facilities. Another issue is poor health-seeking behaviours among women. Combined with weaknesses in the health system, these factors limit the use of high quality interventions that have been proven to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.Strategies to improve quality The Ifakara Health Institute, Tanzania's Ministry of Health, and Canada's SickKids Centre for Global Health have tested and applied quality improvement strategies for mothers and newborns across six districts in southern Tanzania. This project will explore if these strategies can be scaled up and integrated into district-level health systems. It will also examine whether these strategies for higher quality maternal and newborn health care services, better care-seeking, and improved health outcomes can be sustained at the regional level. Researchers will produce a model that can be streamlined and integrated into existing structures within the Tanzanian health system. It will generate evidence needed to inform national policy on quality improvement in Tanzania.Project partnersThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. The program is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, newborn, and child deaths in Tanzania. The Government of Tanzania has placed a high priority on this issue. Healthcare service coverage has increased in recent years, but there are still significant geographic, financial, and socio-cultural barriers to services being accessed. Recent studies in Tanzania have shown that when healthcare systems are addressed (including barriers to health services and improving the quality of care), maternal and newborn deaths can be substantially reduced.Removing barriers to health careThis project is designed to improve maternal, newborn, and child health. It consists of select interventions targeting users and providers of health care in four districts in Tanzania's Iringa region.Researchers will look at how poverty, gender relations, and living in rural areas act as barriers to accessing quality care. The project's interventions will address delays caused by:-decisions to seek care-transportation needs-availability of adequate and timely care at the facility The project team will evaluate the impacts and conduct a cost analysis of the interventions.Better access, increased demandThis project is expected to increase demand and use of maternal and newborn health services. Researchers will share their findings with policymakers, program managers, and representatives of international organizations working in Tanzania. Their findings will be presented at national conferences and at the University of Dar es Salaam. They will also submit papers to peer-reviewed and academic journals.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project will address high... maternal and newborn mortality in Tanzania by adapting and implementing a maternal and newborn health intervention approach that follows the MamaToto process.Health care in rural TanzaniaThe rural regions of Geita and Mwanza have some of the worst maternal and child health indicators in the country. Local health facilities are under-resourced and possess limited management capacity. While the national policy calls for a community health-worker program, the reality is that there are gaps in coordinating and implementing community health services at local levels. Community health-workers have limited training and supervision. The Government of Tanzania's new commitment to improving mothers and children's well-being needs evidence that will support the creation of stronger health systems through community-based interventions. The MamaToto approachThis project draws on the low-cost MamaToto (mother-baby) process implemented in Uganda, where substantial gains in maternal and child health were achieved. These gains took place through an approach that strengthened services at health facilities and within communities. This project will implement and evaluate a modified version of MamaToto in rural Tanzania, aligned with the country's current policy guidance for community health services. The project team will engage district leaders, strengthen facility services, and develop the role of community health workers. They will demonstrate if and how community-based interventions can reduce maternal and child mortality by effectively bringing low-cost program efforts to scale under government leadership. This project aims to scale up national maternal and child health programs that will improve survival rates for mothers and children. Based on these interventions, the project team will develop an implementation package that includes lessons learned, tools, and other materials to allow other jurisdictions to undertake similar initiatives.Project partnersThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. Building an Enhanced Cadre of ...Community Health Workers to Improve Maternal and Newborn Health in Rural Tanzania (IMCHA)

One woman dies in childbirth i...n Tanzania every hour. With such high rates of maternal and newborn mortality, this project will address the problem by giving community health workers greater skills to assess and treat women, while extending the healthcare system's reach to rural women and newborns. Rural obstacles to better healthIn the Mara region of Tanzania, nearly 60% of births occur outside of health facilities. A high proportion of these births result in poor outcomes for the mother, newborn, or both. Reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Tanzania involves overcoming barriers to accessing rural healthcare facilities and improving access to quality community health care. These barriers include: -lack of qualified human resources-long distances to health facilities-high cost and poor availability of transportation-lack of knowledge of the risks related to non-facility births-cultural beliefs about avoiding professional careExtending health care's reachThe project team will train community healthcare workers to improve how they assess and treat women and infants, and extend health care to rural areas. They will evaluate interventions to improve antenatal care and delivery, such as prenatal vitamins and travel vouchers to get women to health facilities for screening of hypertensive disorders, HIV, and other conditions. Community health workers will use mobile phones to improve routine processes such as birth registration and monitoring stocks and workflows. The research team will generate evidence on sustainable interventions for delivering community-based primary health care in Tanzania that improves access to antenatal care and skilled delivery. They will focus on ways to enhance the knowledge and role of community health workers and to increase their use of mobile health (mhealth). The project will help guide policymakers at all levels of government to explore scaling up interventions that can improve outcomes for mothers and newborns. Project partnersThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. The program is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Innovating for Maternal and Ch...ild Health in Africa Communications and Evaluation Fund
more

This project will help the Inn...ovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) program establish a communications and evaluation fund. It will also support the program in carrying out strategic, bilingual communications and knowledge translation activities, as well as monitor and evaluate its work. Improving maternal and child health IMCHA will improve maternal, newborn, and child health by using primary health care as an entry point to strengthen health systems, ensuring they are more equitable. The program is supporting 20 implementation research teams. The teams will generate new knowledge about how interventions work, for whom, and under what conditions, to ensure that mothers and their children have better access to the care they need. To promote the uptake of research findings so that they influence national and regional policies and practices, IMCHA is supporting two health policy and research organizations. These organizations are working closely with the implementation research teams. Communicating innovation and results This project establishes a communications and evaluation fund for the program. It will help facilitate administration of a budget line in the IMCHA program budget that was established and approved by its three funders: IDRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, for the program's duration (2014-2020). The funds will allow IMCHA to communicate its approach and results, while helping to ensure that they are clearly understood and adopted by target audiences. The communications activities are listed in the IMCHA Communication Plan. The project will also allow the program to prepare for the IMCHA evaluations, and finance the mid-term and final evaluations. Full details are available in the IMCHA evaluation plan, logical framework, and program monitoring framework.

Leadership and managerial capa...city strengthening for quality pregnancy and newborn outcomes in Tanzania (IMCHA)
more
|
Success in the implementation ...of maternal and newborn health interventions at the country level has been generally attributed to three main interlinked factors: leadership and management, resources, and end-user-related factors. Leadership and managerial capacities are critical for transformational change and sustainability, including gender-related dimensions of health systems leadership. These capacities also play a significant role in introducing and/or scaling up implementation of emergency obstetric and neonatal care in health facilities. This project, implemented by the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health, working in collaboration with Dalhousie University, complements current programming for accessing safe deliveries in Tanzania. It assesses the identified gaps in leadership and managerial capacities as well as the skills gaps in comprehensive emergency obstetrical and newborn care (CEmONC) in health facilities in Morogoro, Tanzania. This project employs a mixed-methods, participatory approach to research and capacity building that examines results over the longer term. It will be implemented in the same intervention health centres selected for the safe deliveries project, along with control health centres. Through enhancing leadership capacity of health centre managers and providers and CEmONC service provision, this project aims to produce research results that can contribute to improving maternal and child health service delivery. By sustaining and scaling up use of these services at the health centre level in Tanzania, it will also contribute to the optimum use of existing resources (non-human and human) for maternal, neonatal, and child health. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research

The project aims to improve he...alth services for mothers, newborn babies, and young children in all five districts of the Simiyu region in Tanzania. The project is designed to strengthen existing health systems and to empower community members, especially women, to demand the health services they require, to make choices that support good health, and to get involved in managing local health care services. Specific activities include refurbishing and equipping health centres and district hospitals, providing training for local government officials to help them better manage and prioritize health services for mothers and children, and providing training for health workers with a focus on gender equality and public health issues. The project also supports community engagement activities that help local communities become more aware of issues relating to the health of women and children and to gender equality. The project provides community health workers with essential tools for treating women and children and training in home-based life-saving skills, birth planning, the treatment of childhood illnesses, and involving men in supporting the health of women and children in their community. This project is expected to directly help 108,000 pregnant women, 20,000 infants, and 114,000 children under five and indirectly help another 400,000 women and their families. The African Medical and Research Foundation is working in partnership with the Government of Tanzania, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, and local government authorities to implement the project. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn, and child health commitment.

This project, in partnership w...ith Tanzania's Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, and local government authorities, is supporting the achievement of results of the Government of Tanzania's National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania (2016 – 2020); a sub-strategy of Tanzania's Fourth Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSPIV). This initiative emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level, strengthening the health system referral pyramid, from community to national level; improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, essential medicines and commodities, and information communications technology); addressing human resources for health shortage and distribution; improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing; and promoting public private partnership. The implementation of the National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania is focused on improving the management and delivery of primary health care services to improve maternal, newborn and child health. Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania's pooled fund for the health sector to improve governance and to strengthen the health system performance. Since 2006, Canada has been working in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability. This support also fosters greater policy dialogue among donors, government and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focused aid, as well as long-term development results.

The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives and health professionals to increase their skills; (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies; and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives. Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country.

The project seeks to reduce ma...ternal and newborn mortality in Tabora region, Tanzania, by improving the availability of quality maternal and newborn health services and increasing the utilization of maternal and newborn health services by women and their families at health facilities and within the community in targeted districts. The project increases the number of safe deliveries taking place in health facilities; the number of women who receive quality antenatal care during pregnancy and the contraceptive prevalence rate. It also decreases the number of women with unmet family planning needs. Project activities include: (1) building the capacity of regional and district council health management teams in data management and usage, supply chain management, budgeting and leadership to plan, deliver and manage maternal and newborn health services; (2) refurbishing and upgrading health centre and hospital maternity wards to provide life-saving Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) equipment and develop an emergency transportation system; (3) training and mentoring health care workers in BEmONC, CEmONC and reproductive health services including family planning; (4) training and supporting at least 1000 community health workers to deliver quality maternal and newborn health education and promote utilization of health care services; (5) developing and delivering youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services in health facilities; and; (6) leveraging existing village savings and loans programs which utilize a social fund for maternal and newborn health expenditures to increase women's financial independence and decision making related to household resources. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, the Canadian Society for International Health, McGill University, CARE Tanzania, Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Tanzania, Ifakara Health Institute and the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Tanzania.
