This project is part of an ini...tiative that will provide evidence and strengthen capacity for bridging the knowledge gap in responding to the growing COVID-19 health crisis in the short-term and longer term. The initiative will support research on resilience building and preparedness to serve the needs of refugees and other populations on the move by promoting inter-sectoral approaches, including building bridges between humanitarian and development responses to reduce and control health risks for displaced populations, and leveraging existing local opportunities to strengthen the overall initiative. This project will identify gaps in COVID-19 responses in addressing sexual and reproductive health and maternal and neonatal child health issues among Rohingya refugees and host population women and adolescent girls in Bangladesh. Bangladesh hosts the largest refugee camps in the world, with close to 860,000 stateless Rohingya refugees. The project will use qualitative and quantitative approaches to examine potential health impacts of COVID-19. It will also assess whether deployment of digital interventions (a contact tracing application and a maternal and neonatal child health application) can reduce transmission of COVID-19 and improve sexual and reproductive health and maternal and neonatal child health outcomes respectively. The project will engage government and other key stakeholders to develop and build evidence on the use of these tools. The evidence will inform local policies and the health systems set up in the refugee camps and host communities to combat COVID-19. It will also inform any future health emergencies, enhancing the preparedness and early response aspects of the health system.

This joint initiative, UNICEF-...UNFPA, aims to reduce deaths of girls, women and infants by promoting and improving sexual and reproductive health services and rights and access to related information services. It particularly focuses on increasing effective coverage of key sexual and reproductive health services and rights including maternal newborn child health services in low performing districts. It addresses gaps and weakness of local government service delivery capacity, geography and culture to reduce preventable deaths amongst women and infants. The overall goal of the initiative is to contribute and accelerate the existing efforts of the government of Bangladesh in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights of the population, especially among women and adolescents, including efforts to improve maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health. The project aims to provide eq...uitable sexual and reproductive health care and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) for people living in local communities of Cox's Bazar impacted by the influx of over 740,000 Rohingya refugees since August 2017. Cox's Bazar is one of Bangladesh's poorest and most vulnerable districts, with poverty well above the country's national average. The influx of Rohingya has increased economic tensions and competition for scarce resources, including jobs and income among the Rohingya and the existing Bangleshi communities where the refugees are camped, as well as having a serious impact on local infrastructure and services. This situation is particularly difficult for women and children who are the most vulnerable. The project works to improve the accessibility to GBV and psychosocial services in public health facilities and women-friendly spaces for survivors of GBV. Project activities include: (1) increasing awareness and use of services by survivors through outreach activities, (2) building the self-reliance skills of 4,000 women with information on their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), functional numeracy and literacy skills, nutrition and core life skills, (3) engaging 30,000 community members through implementing, for the first time in Bangladesh, the SASA! (Start, Awareness, Support, Action) community mobilization strategy for raising awareness and preventing GBV, and (4) developing a community-based GBV response and prevention program, including engagement with men and boys for their role in protecting families and communities from GBV. Benefiting over 500,000 women and girls, the project supports the Bangladeshi Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in: (1) strengthening public health facilities to provide high-quality midwifery and emergency obstetric care, (2) increasing the availability of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, including family planning, contraception and treatment of STIs and HIV, and (3) developing training materials and providing training for health care providers on GBV response and treatment of survivors.

This project aims to enhance e...quitable development and empowerment for women, girls, adolescents, their families and communities in select areas of Asia with high levels of poverty, human resource deficits, inadequate health and early childhood education systems, and entrenched gender inequalities. This project works to advance gender equality and widen opportunities for some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Asia, focusing on the empowerment of women, girls, and adolescents as the key to addressing the root causes of gender inequality and global poverty. The project responds to the interconnected challenges experienced by women, girls, and their communities through four complementary components: foundations for health, foundations for children, advancing gender equality through civil society, and advancing Canadian champions for development. Project activities include: (1) providing training on management and delivery of gender and adolescent friendly health services, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health, (2) extending sexual and reproductive health services to communities through teleconsultations and e-health, (3) empowering community health workers to screen the nutritional status of children under five years old, (4) developing curricula and resources for early childhood development, for life skills training materials for adolescents and for the identification and response to gender-based violence, and (5) leadership training for young women.

The project aims to improve th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of vulnerable and underserved women and adolescent girls in two urban slums in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In collaboration with local partners, project activities include: (1) providing training to health facility staff of 154 garment factories and clinics to provide quality contraceptive care responsive to needs of adolescents, and survivors of sexual and gender based violence, (2) facilitating social and behavior change to support women's and adolescent girls' needs with respect to SRHR, and (3) providing infrastructure, commodities, and technology required to provide quality woman-centered contraceptive service in the selected facilities. The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives and health professionals to increase their skills, (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies, and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives. Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country.

This project aims to improve t...he economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, in targeted developing countries in order to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the support of 740 volunteer placements, the project not only increases the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues, but also enhances the performance of 45 partners in developing countries in implementing more inclusive, innovative, and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. The project also works to increase the performance of partners in the education sector, due to the transformative power of education on populations, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable. Project activities include: (1) recruiting and training Canadian experts and graduates on capacity building and cross-cutting development issues, including gender equality, human rights, and the environment, (2) engaging Canadian elementary and secondary school youth in key global issues and organizing public engagement activities promoting the results achieved by partners and volunteers, (3) developing or improving training programs and policies, tools, pedagogical, management and governance methods that promote the inclusion of people in vulnerable or marginalized situations with targeted partners, (4) providing training or support to partner staff on gender equality, human rights, security, sexual and gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, inclusion and retention of girls, and (5) establishing special funds to enable local partners to improve the quality of education and respect for the environment and/or make educational initiatives more inclusive or gender-sensitive. The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR, (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models, and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations.

In Mali and Burkina Faso, mate...rnal and child mortality rates remain high. The governments of both countries are trying to increase access to and use of health care for women and children. They have adopted policies to remove financial barriers and are now piloting results-based financing, which gives financial incentives to providers of health services for achieving predefined indicators. Despite these efforts, health inequalities persist. This project will contribute to increasing equitable access to health services for the poor by strengthening the implementation of health reforms in Mali and Burkina Faso. It examines the emergence, relevance, design, and development of results-based financing in both countries, and studies its implementation, sustainability, and efficacy. The project will also look at the impact of results-based financing on health providers' motivation and teamwork, local leadership, community management committees of health facilities, access to and use of health services, and financial protection of vulnerable populations. It will document any unexpected outcomes. The project will result in a number of scientific publications from established and young researchers. In addition, the results of the study will be disseminated to decision-makers across Africa and to international agencies involved in the design and scale-up of results-based financing for maternal and child health. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) Initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Project activities include: (1) establishing/refurbishing physical safe spaces in existing community structures and equipping them with age-appropriate materials, (2) identifying female and male gender equality (GE) community champions using a participatory approach, and (3) conducting dialogue workshops between trained Civil Society organizations (CSOs) and government officials to understand the issues and challenges in addressing CEFM. It is expected the project reaches over 25,900 direct beneficiaries (11,400 girls, 6,700 boys, 3,800 women, 4,000 men) in the Western Area Rural and the Kailahun Districts of Sierra Leone, and the Cascades and Hauts-Bassins regions of Burkina Faso. Key groups include girls, boys, women, men, traditional and religious leaders, women- and girl-led community groups, Civil Society organizations, service providers, sub-national, national, and regional government stakeholders. The project aims to improve ac...cess to abortion and contraceptive services in the context of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has threatened access to contraception and family planning. This project works to ensure that people most in need have access to sexual and reproductive health and rights services during this critical time. This is done by strengthening the abortion ecosystem to fast track, and support key innovations in abortion and contraceptive care, while helping low-resource countries build workarounds that help de-medicalize and streamline abortion care across the ecosystem. This includes supporting health facilities that are already under stress by the demands of the global pandemic. The project expects to benefit women who are the most marginalized, including those who are disabled, migrants, Indigenous, poor, young, those lacking literacy skills, etc.

The overall objective of this ...project is to promote the uptake of research findings from the cohort of projects Combatting sexual and gender-based violence and improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in West Africa. Specifically, the project will document and consolidate the research results and lessons learned from the project cohort. The results and lessons learned will be promoted to inform policies and actions at the national, regional, and global levels to address the negative interactions between adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights and sexual and gender-based violence. The project will also amplify the voices of the cohort members, contributing to the development of West African leadership in implementation-oriented action research that incorporates the nexus between sexual and gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health.

The project aims to empower wo...men and engage men by increasing the awareness of, access to and quality of, family planning services in Egypt. Egypt's population has dramatically increased in the last decade, reaching almost 100 million people in 2018. Access to quality family planning services is critical for women and adolescent girls to lead healthy lives, and is part of an important strategy to address high population growth rates. The project also aims to address the barriers women, adolescent girls and girls face in accessing quality health services including social norms, behaviours and attitudes. Project activities include: (1) procuring contraceptives and developing a distribution plan in targeted areas, (2) designing and rolling out of a comprehensive curriculum for population and family planning education, and (3) organizing advocacy events to solidify the national commitment for family planning. The project is part of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) national program, which aims to reach 5,500 family planning clinics, 14,000 Ministry of Health and Population outreach workers, 2,500 women's health clubs and 60 million people through a comprehensive media campaign on population and family planning.

This project supports women an...d girls in the selected regions of Ethiopia to be empowered to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health free from discrimination, coercion and violence. Implicit in the program's theory of change is the causal relationship between gender inequality, access to and use of quality SRH services and maternal mortality. By expanding access to services while simultaneously tackling cultural, gender and knowledge-based barriers – in essence, building supply and demand in local communities – the program has a better chance of addressing the root causes of maternal mortality and unsafe abortion and achieving durable reductions in both. Project activities focus on provision of abortion services, post-abortion care, contraceptives and family planning through mobile outreach. A significant component of the project also works on the demand-creation side of family planning, by working with communities to understand the SRHR needs of women and girls, particularly rural married adolescent girls. / TBC

This project responds to the reality that many teachers are currently not trained or provided with the material required to engage with adolescents on sexuality education properly. This includes limited access to gender-sensitive and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services. In response to coronavirus (COVID-19), the project also focuses on preventing and responding to rising sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and child abuse cases. Project activities include: (1) training teachers to deliver standardized, gender-sensitive and youth-friendly comprehensive sexuality education, (2) creating new, and strengthen existing, adolescent health clubs, (3) delivering comprehensive sexuality education to adolescent girls, (4) training frontline health care workers in the provision of youth-friendly and gender-sensitive services, (5) increasing the number of health facilities providing quality adolescent-friendly health services, (6) raising awareness of adolescent girls to increase the demand for family planning, (7) strengthening procurement, supply and logistics management systems for last-mile distribution of contraceptives to young people, (8) engaging in social and behaviour change communication to raise awareness on gender equality and create an enabling environment for adolescent girls to defend, promote and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights, and (9) improving access, quality and responsiveness of critical social services to respond to SGBV and child protection during the COVID-19 pandemic.
