Implementing comprehensive, co...mmunity-focused primary health care is a major challenge in post-conflict regions such as South Sudan and neighbouring Northern Uganda. South Sudan is recovering from two decades of civil war that have destroyed education and health infrastructure. Torit Hospital, one of the major hospitals in the region, is poorly staffed and lacks specialists and basic equipment. The situation is similar in Northern Uganda. In the District of Gulu, the burden of disease has largely been managed through St. Mary's Hospital Lacor. This region has not been able to achieve the progress in maternal and child health that has been reached in the central part of Uganda. This project assesses the implementation and scale of community-focused reproductive and child health interventions in post-conflict settings. It focuses on establishing evidence to promote sustainability and resilience, with the goal of ensuring access to essential health services by vulnerable populations. The researchers will explore strategies for improved maternal care and child nutrition services, cervical cancer screening, and support for women's empowerment through outreach efforts from the two hospitals. Research findings will be validated through ministries of health at the local, district, and national levels to optimize engagement and to encourage adoption of the project's recommendations to strengthen systems. The results of the study will directly inform the ministries of health in South Sudan and in Uganda on related interventions, including a scalable model for improved community-based services. This will address barriers to interventions, reduce maternal and child mortality, and extend the reach of health services to communities that have faced shocks and stressors. This is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre. Objectives /

Developing and Socializing a F...ramework for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Morocco

The Middle East and North Afri...ca region is experiencing a period of transition imposed by changing political, demographic, social, and economic environments. Protracted conflict and growing populations of refugees and other displaced people have defined the region in recent years. Past gains made in accessing women's health and reproductive health services are losing ground. This is especially acute among adolescent boys and girls attempting to access sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services. Growing risks related to SRH for this age group include sexual and gender-based violence, early marriage, and resulting SRH-related illnesses and deaths. Responding to these needs and creating effective prevention measures requires a context-specific, evidence-based framework upon which to base policies and actions. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa Health Policy Forum, an independent non-governmental forum to discuss health policy issues in the region. The aim of the project is to develop a regional, sustainable, gender-responsive, and evidence-based multi-sectoral adolescent sexual and reproductive health framework in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco. The framework will address adolescent SRH issues as they pertain to education, communication, social norms, and legal frameworks. Using a gender and rights-based approach, this framework will be developed with different actors, including adolescent boys and girls, and will be tested and refined to optimize its uptake and influence. The project will produce position papers for each of the four countries, as well as targeted analyses and briefs for specific user groups. Key stakeholders include adolescent girls and boys, parents, educators, non-governmental organizations, health workers, and policymakers. Expected changes from the project include improvements in adolescent knowledge and understanding; awareness and agency with regards to sexual and reproductive health information and services; greater engagement across various sectors in a given country and across the four countries; and strengthened capacities to apply the framework by key stakeholders in each of the countries.

The project aims to improve ac...cess to abortion and contraceptive services in the context of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has threatened access to contraception and family planning. This project works to ensure that people most in need have access to sexual and reproductive health and rights services during this critical time. This is done by strengthening the abortion ecosystem to fast track, and support key innovations in abortion and contraceptive care, while helping low-resource countries build workarounds that help de-medicalize and streamline abortion care across the ecosystem. This includes supporting health facilities that are already under stress by the demands of the global pandemic. The project expects to benefit women who are the most marginalized, including those who are disabled, migrants, Indigenous, poor, young, those lacking literacy skills, etc.

The COVID-19 pandemic is alrea...dy disrupting access to life-saving family planning and maternal health services. It is also compounding existing gender and social inequalities. Low-income countries, such as those supported by UNFPA Supplies, where health systems are already weak, are facing the greatest challenges in maintaining services, particularly for younger, poorer and more vulnerable and marginalized populations, who already face social and economic exclusion and limited access to health services, for instance women with disabilities, indigenous women and women refugees. Funds received through the UNFPA Supplies programme would be used to cover urgent commodity needs for contraceptives and maternal health medicines across the 46 UNFPA Supplies countries. As funds available in countries are being diverted to the COVID-19 response, including providing personal protective equipment for health-care providers, the need is now great. These additional funds will be used to prevent stock-outs of products, and ensure that women and adolescent girls can still access a range of contraceptive methods for family planning and for prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and access quality medicines when needed during pregnancy and delivery. The funds would also cover the increasing costs of freight and delivery as a result of the pandemic, helping ensure that supply chains can deliver these commodities reach all those who need them, even among harder to reach populations. In addition to commodity procurement to meet urgent needs, funds will be used to respond to specific country requests for COVID-19 support to maintain or enhance SRHR services, with a focus on populations experiencing vulnerability or marginalization. / to be added

Support to the Global Financin...g Facility's Expansion Plan (2020-2023)
more
|
Launched by the United Nations... in 2015, the Global Financing Facility for Every Woman Every Child (GFF) was designed to help countries drive progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition (RMNCAH+N). As a multi-stakeholder partnership, the GFF is a new model for development financing for the SDG era that helps countries tackle pervasive health and nutrition issues by focussing on health systems bottlenecks and by catalyzing financing to achieve universal health coverage. The GFF is currently engaged with 27 low- and lower middle income countries and plans to expand to 23 new countries for a global footprint of 50 countries by 2023. By mobilizing domestic resources, aligning complementary financing, linking grants to concessional financing and drawing in private sector financing, the GFF aims to mobilize an additional US$50-75 billion of resources globally toward scaling up coverage of priority RMNCAH+N interventions in the 50 countries. It has been estimated that this will save up to 34.7 million lives by 2030. / To be added

March 2020 – In response to ...the coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic, the United Nations launched the Global Humanitarian Response Plan (GHRP) on March 25th, 2020. The GHRP seeks to respond to the direct public health and immediate humanitarian consequences of the pandemic. The GHRP's three strategic priorities include: (1) containing the spread of the pandemic, (2) decreasing the deterioration of human assets and rights, social cohesion and livelihoods, and (3) protecting, assisting and advocating for refugees, internally displaced people, migrants and host communities particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. With GAC's support, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is contributing to meeting the sexual and reproductive health needs of vulnerable women and girls, and preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence. Project activities include: (1) ensuring the continuity of national and local health system capacity to provide access to integrated quality sexual and reproductive health, (2) mitigating the impact on supply chain and logistics management for sexual and reproductive health supplies, ensuring continuity of supplies and care for life-saving sexual and reproductive health services, (3) providing and protecting health workers by ensuring that basic personal protection equipment is available, and (4) providing risk communication and community engagement for primary prevention and stigma reduction on COVID-19.

|

Support to UNFPA Supplies COVI...D-19 Response/Appui au réponse UNFPA Supplies à la COVID-19

|
