This project aims to scale up ...and expand programming in the 36 current and 20 new districts in Ghana. This project works to empower adolescent girls, including those who are most vulnerable, through the provision of, and access to, gender-responsive comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning and contraception. This project responds to the reality that many teachers are currently not trained or provided with the material required to engage with adolescents on sexuality education properly. This includes limited access to gender-sensitive and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services. Project activities include: (1) training teachers to deliver standardized, gender-sensitive and youth-friendly comprehensive sexuality education, (2) creating new and strengthen existing adolescent health clubs, (3) delivering comprehensive sexuality education to adolescent girls, (4) training frontline health care workers in the provision of youth-friendly and gender-sensitive services, (5) increasing the number of health facilities providing quality adolescent friendly health services, (6) raising awareness of adolescent girls to increase the demand for family planning, (7) strengthening procurement, supply and logistics management systems for last mile distribution of contraceptives to young people, and (8) engaging in social and behaviour change communications to raise awareness on gender equality and create an enabling environment for adolescent girls to defend, promote and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights.

The project aims to reduce sex...ual and gender-based violence (SGBV), reduce adolescent pregnancies, and advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls and young women in Indigenous rural communities in western Guatemala and Honduras. The project focuses on supporting the poorest and most vulnerable women and girls. In Guatemala, girls between the ages of 10 and 14 are giving birth in astonishingly high numbers. In Honduras, domestic violence remains the leading reported crime, yet the number of unreported cases is much higher. Both Guatemala and Honduras have extremely high rates of violence that destabilizes the social and economic systems. Project activities include: (1) providing workshops on entrepreneurship, business skills, financial literacy and vocational skills to adolescent girls and young women, (2) providing support to SGBV survivors, including adolescent-specific post-violence care services, and counselling and resources to access safe houses, (3) providing training on gender equality, SGBV detection, and advocacy on both SRHR and the reduction of SGBV to community leaders, youth councils, women's health committees and community health committees, and (4) adolescent-specific SRHR services for adolescent boys and girls.

This project aims to improve t...he economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, in targeted developing countries in order to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the support of 740 volunteer placements, the project not only increases the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues, but also enhances the performance of 45 partners in developing countries in implementing more inclusive, innovative, and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. The project also works to increase the performance of partners in the education sector, due to the transformative power of education on populations, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable. Project activities include: (1) recruiting and training Canadian experts and graduates on capacity building and cross-cutting development issues, including gender equality, human rights, and the environment, (2) engaging Canadian elementary and secondary school youth in key global issues and organizing public engagement activities promoting the results achieved by partners and volunteers, (3) developing or improving training programs and policies, tools, pedagogical, management and governance methods that promote the inclusion of people in vulnerable or marginalized situations with targeted partners, (4) providing training or support to partner staff on gender equality, human rights, security, sexual and gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, inclusion and retention of girls, and (5) establishing special funds to enable local partners to improve the quality of education and respect for the environment and/or make educational initiatives more inclusive or gender-sensitive. The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR, (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models, and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations.

This project aims to enhance e...quitable development and empowerment for women, girls, adolescents, their families and communities in select areas of Asia with high levels of poverty, human resource deficits, inadequate health and early childhood education systems, and entrenched gender inequalities. This project works to advance gender equality and widen opportunities for some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Asia, focusing on the empowerment of women, girls, and adolescents as the key to addressing the root causes of gender inequality and global poverty. The project responds to the interconnected challenges experienced by women, girls, and their communities through four complementary components: foundations for health, foundations for children, advancing gender equality through civil society, and advancing Canadian champions for development. Project activities include: (1) providing training on management and delivery of gender and adolescent friendly health services, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health, (2) extending sexual and reproductive health services to communities through teleconsultations and e-health, (3) empowering community health workers to screen the nutritional status of children under five years old, (4) developing curricula and resources for early childhood development, for life skills training materials for adolescents and for the identification and response to gender-based violence, and (5) leadership training for young women.

In light of persistently high ...levels of maternal mortality and unmet need for family planning, and prevalent harmful practices (including female genital mutilation and child marriage), the Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Indonesia project, in partnership with UNFPA and UNICEF, aims to transform sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and young people in Indonesia by addressing key gaps in the quality of birth attendants, access to comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services for young people, and advocacy and community-based programming for the prevention of gender-based violence and harmful practices using the male involvement approach (focusing on child marriage and female genital mutilation). The COVID-19 pandemic threaten...s to erode Indonesia's recent child health and development gains. In the absence of aggressive public health interventions, an estimated 2.5 million cases will require hospitalization with up to 250,000 deaths. Immediate effects on an overwhelmed health system will be compounded by capacity gaps related to sickness and death among health workers. With high baseline vulnerabilities, including immunity gaps and undernutrition, any decline in essential services risks a spiral of preventable mortality. Poverty-threshold incomes, the absence of social safety nets and adverse effects on learning outcomes and family structure will drive serious and sustained long term consequences for children, undermining fragile household economies and the country's development trajectory. Canada is helping to support UNICEF's comprehensive response plan to COVID-19, a partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Indonesia. The Plan will Respond, Recover, Restore, and mitigate the immediate risks and wider effects of COVID-19.

INTEGRATING A NEONATAL HEALTHC...ARE PACKAGE FOR MALAWI (IMCHA)

Integrating a neonatal healthc...are package for Malawi (IMCHA)

Malawi has the highest preterm... delivery rate in the world. This, paired with inadequate newborn care at health facilities, results in high rates of infant mortality. Managing the healthcare needs of preterm infants remains a challenge. They face complications during and after birth, and they have an increased risk of death, chronic medical problems, and malnutrition later in life. Many life-saving interventions have been successful in Malawi but they have not been scaled up into routine clinical practice. This project will determine whether a package of neonatal interventions, known as the Malawi Neonatal Package of Care, can be implemented at the health facility level to reduce neonatal mortality. Interventions include low-cost continuous airway support for breathing, breastfeeding support, Kangaroo Mother Care (skin-to-skin, mother-to-baby contact), hot cots to prevent hypothermia, management of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and phototherapy lights to treat jaundice. Researchers will investigate the best ways to implement these interventions in routine clinical practice. The project will directly train nurses, doctors, and other health care providers. It will also produce peer-reviewed journal articles, and provide presentations at hospitals and nursing organizations, interviews with media, and policy-relevant information to decision-makers. This is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative,a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

The project aims to advance th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls, reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and support advocacy for SRHR in Sierra Leone and Malawi. For adolescent girls in Sierra Leone and Malawi, the rate of maternal mortality and SGBV is very high. The project provides support to SGBV survivors, including clinical services, legal services, and advocacy, in addition to conducting education sessions on SGBV prevention and referral. The project works to strengthen the capacity of healthcare practitioners to provide high quality, gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and rights-based SRHR services. Project activities include: (1) providing training for staff that is tailored to the specific health needs of adolescents, (2) creating safe spaces for adolescents to receive SRHR services in private, and (3) working with healthcare practitioners on national health objectives. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, healthcare institutions are better able to respond to the SRHR needs of women and girls, empowering them to live healthy lives and make informed choices around their health and rights.

The Yellen project - meaning '...light' in Bambara - works to enable women and adolescent girls in Kayes, one of the poorest and most underserved regions in Mali, to benefit from quality health services by improving their knowledge, increasing their decision-making power and their ability to influence their sexual and reproductive health and rights. The project proposes an innovative model of collaboration to harmonize the work of health service actors at the state, civil society (especially women's groups) and decentralized community levels. Project activities include: (1) supporting Mali's Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in the implementation of the Social Health Development Programme, specifically with regard to improving sexual and reproductive health and rights, (2) providing training and equipping health workers to deliver quality services that meet the specific needs of women and adolescent girls, and (3) constructing and rehabilitating community health centres and providing equipment and inputs for the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning and emergency obstetric care. The project aims to reach more than 540,000 women and adolescents. Management teams from three regional directorates (health, social development and solidarity economy, and promotion of women, children and family) and seven health districts from the Kayes region are also beneficiaries. Overall, 1,255,944 people from Kayes are reached by the project, dispersed in 951 villages, with a special focus on 300 villages.

The project aims to improve th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of some of the most vulnerable women and adolescent girls in six districts of Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique. It addresses SRHR barriers facing women and girls through three interrelated and mutually reinforcing efforts: improving the supply of services, so that quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services are available and effectively delivered, increasing the demand for and use of SRH services, which requires an environment where partners, families and communities understand the importance of SRHR and value women's and girls' decision-making power, and enhancing the use of SRHR information and evidence by key stakeholders. Project activities include: (1) building capacity of key district-level health workers, (2) addressing weaknesses with infrastructure, equipment and services (such as ensuring confidentiality), (3) strengthening referral systems, including for complicated post-abortion cases, (4) engaging men and boys as partners for change, sensitising community leaders, engaging community health committees, (5) providing family planning services through community health workers, and (6) generating and disseminating gender-sensitive research on SRHR and supporting the government's capacity to collect, analyse and use SRH data effectively.

IMPROVING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ...RIGHTS TO PREVENT TEENAGE PREGNANCIES IN NIGER
more

Improving reproductive health ...rights to prevent teenage pregnancies in Niger
more
|
In Niger, 76.3% of girls marry... before the age of 18 and 57% have already started their reproductive life. Of deaths among girls aged 15-19 in Niger, 34.4% are linked to pregnancy and its complications, with adolescent girls accounting for 25% of the country's maternal deaths. The fight against teenage pregnancies is a priority for Niger, but the policies and programs promoting sexual and reproductive health implemented over the past decades have had little effect. This project addresses teenage pregnancy and the norms, practices, and values surrounding adolescent sexuality and gender-based violence. A participatory research approach will be adopted, including hiring and training youth leaders from the communities where the project will be implemented. It will help to strengthen local capacities while benefitting from local networks, knowledge, and socio-cultural considerations. Evidence-based models co-created with communities will be developed and implemented. They will integrate the prevention of early pregnancy and gender-based violence and the promotion of adolescent reproductive health rights, with particular attention to the experiences of adolescent girls aged 10-14. A participatory assessment will highlight the comparative advantages of the integrated model for scaling up advocacy. This project is part of a research initiative developed by IDRC called Combatting sexual and gender-based violence and improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in West Africa.

The overall objective of this ...project is to promote the uptake of research findings from the cohort of projects Combatting sexual and gender-based violence and improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in West Africa. Specifically, the project will document and consolidate the research results and lessons learned from the project cohort. The results and lessons learned will be promoted to inform policies and actions at the national, regional, and global levels to address the negative interactions between adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights and sexual and gender-based violence. The project will also amplify the voices of the cohort members, contributing to the development of West African leadership in implementation-oriented action research that incorporates the nexus between sexual and gender-based violence and sexual and reproductive health.

The COVID-19 pandemic is alrea...dy disrupting access to life-saving family planning and maternal health services. It is also compounding existing gender and social inequalities. Low-income countries, such as those supported by UNFPA Supplies, where health systems are already weak, are facing the greatest challenges in maintaining services, particularly for younger, poorer and more vulnerable and marginalized populations, who already face social and economic exclusion and limited access to health services, for instance women with disabilities, indigenous women and women refugees. Funds received through the UNFPA Supplies programme would be used to cover urgent commodity needs for contraceptives and maternal health medicines across the 46 UNFPA Supplies countries. As funds available in countries are being diverted to the COVID-19 response, including providing personal protective equipment for health-care providers, the need is now great. These additional funds will be used to prevent stock-outs of products, and ensure that women and adolescent girls can still access a range of contraceptive methods for family planning and for prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and access quality medicines when needed during pregnancy and delivery. The funds would also cover the increasing costs of freight and delivery as a result of the pandemic, helping ensure that supply chains can deliver these commodities reach all those who need them, even among harder to reach populations. In addition to commodity procurement to meet urgent needs, funds will be used to respond to specific country requests for COVID-19 support to maintain or enhance SRHR services, with a focus on populations experiencing vulnerability or marginalization. / to be added
