This project would contribute ...to creating an enabling environment where women and girls can participate as equal decision makers in their homes and societies, to have control over their own lives and bodies, and to equally contribute to and benefit from development and prosperity. In Pakistan, women micro-entrepreneurs lack opportunities for capacity development. The project would provide business and financial management skills training to women micro-entrepreneurs to enhance their ability to access markets and run their businesses more efficiently, as well as provide vocational skills training in non-traditional trades to help them to improve their business opportunities. This would enhance the income-earning capability of women micro-entrepreneurs, and would lead to increased household income contributions and long-term economic opportunities. This project would help reduce key barriers to women's economic empowerment by raising awareness and changing perceptions of women's formal participation in the work force. It would establish gender councils at the community level and provide training on gender equality to local governments and the private sector to ensure women's and girls' rights are taken into account in planning and decision-making processes. In addition, the project would contribute to enhancing the ability of women to participate in the work force by addressing maternal health practices and reproductive rights by training women, their mothers-in-law, men and boys on how to improve these practices, and raise awareness of women's rights. / À venir.

Pakistan is the sixth most pop...ulous country in the world, and has a youthful median age of 22. Family planning coverage is very low, and the unmet need for contraception remains high. Under the project, UNFPA will work with the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) in Pakistan to help the country achieve their goal of universal access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care services, including family planning (FP), information and education. UNFPA will be the principal recipient and executing agency for the project. It will lead efforts to ensure that national and provincial policies provide the enabling environment for inclusive, gender-sensitive FP and SRH. AKF in Pakistan and its affiliated organizations will strengthen the delivery of quality, gender-responsive, and inclusive FP/SRH services in targeted areas as well as address gender and social barriers to the utilization and uptake of FP/SRH services. /

This project aims to enhance e...quitable development and empowerment for women, girls, adolescents, their families and communities in select areas of Asia with high levels of poverty, human resource deficits, inadequate health and early childhood education systems, and entrenched gender inequalities. This project works to advance gender equality and widen opportunities for some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in Asia, focusing on the empowerment of women, girls, and adolescents as the key to addressing the root causes of gender inequality and global poverty. The project responds to the interconnected challenges experienced by women, girls, and their communities through four complementary components: foundations for health, foundations for children, advancing gender equality through civil society, and advancing Canadian champions for development. Project activities include: (1) providing training on management and delivery of gender and adolescent friendly health services, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health, (2) extending sexual and reproductive health services to communities through teleconsultations and e-health, (3) empowering community health workers to screen the nutritional status of children under five years old, (4) developing curricula and resources for early childhood development, for life skills training materials for adolescents and for the identification and response to gender-based violence, and (5) leadership training for young women.

The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR, (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models, and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations.

The project aims to improve th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and girls in remote and conflict-affected regions in the Philippines. The project is supporting the Government of the Philippines in its fight against coronavirus (COVID-19), by addressing the heightened vulnerabilities of women and girls to unwanted pregnancies and gender-based violence (GBV) during the pandemic. The project aims to expand ongoing outreach services through mobile clinics for obstetric, prenatal, and postnatal care, including family planning (FP) services. These outreach services also aim to cover the procurement of dignity kits and FP commodities. The project also works to augment existing response activities, such as the procurement of personal protective equipment, the establishment of a SRHR and GBV emergency hotline, and the distribution of COVID-19 information materials. Project activities include: (1) increasing the knowledge, skills, and capacities of women, girls, and boys, (2) working with influencers to change negative social norms on SRHR and gender-based violence (GBV), and (3) enhancing the capacity of the health system to provide comprehensive and gender-sensitive health information and services. The project is supporting local women's rights organizations in improving their organizational capacity, and their ability to conduct learning and research initiatives in support of SRHR and GBV advocacies and policies at the national and local levels. Through the project, over 86,400 women and girls, as well as men and boys, are expected to benefit from improved quality, availability, and access to SRH information and services, in line with the implementation of the Philippine Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law. This project aims to increase ...the health and protection of women and girls during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, by addressing their heightened vulnerabilities to maternal mortality, unplanned pregnancies, and online sexual exploitation and abuse. This project has two components: Component one works to support local governments in continuing the provision of sexual and reproductive health services, as well as mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), in communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Project activities include: (1) providing COVID-19 protection information, family planning counselling and services, through mobile and online platforms, (2) providing technical assistance and support in the roll out of cash assistance program for maternal health services, and (3) providing training to midwives and other healthcare workers on MHPSS services. Component two focuses on building the capacity of government and civil society organizations to prevent and respond to online facilitated sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Project activities include: (1) creating a database and profiling system for early detection and reporting of cases, (2) organizing an online support group to provide survivors with access to legal, health, and psychosocial support services, and (3) engaging youth organizations in developing solutions that tackles online sexual exploitation and abuse. The project expects to provide 5,000 pregnant women with cash assistance to access institution-based health services, and 4,100 people (of which 97% are women) with contraceptives. The project expects that 300,000 individuals receive COVID-19 protection information and family planning counselling. The project also expects to provide 200 healthcare workers with training on MHPSS, and at least 1,000 survivors with SGBV support services. Project activities include: (1) improving access to comprehensive SRHR services for women and girls by providing family planning, ante-natal and post-natal services, screening for sexually transmitted infections, SGBV detection and counselling, and cervical cancer screening and treatment, (2) organizing capacity building for local women's rights organizations (WROs), and better coordination of WROs, civil society organizations, community mobilizers (CMs) and community health providers (CHPs) who work to lead community outreach and education activities, (3) providing training to clinic staff, CMs and CHPs to better detect SGBV, offering counselling and providing referrals in-person, online or through a telehealth system, (4) disseminating COVID-19 information and resources by CMs and CHPs, and (5) engaging clinic staff with community leaders and government stakeholders to better coordinate information sharing and SRHR, SGBV and COVID-19 responses. The project expects to benefit 60,460 community members, including 54,353 women and girls, in Metro Manila and surrounding areas particularly affected by the pandemic. The project aims to empower ad...olescent girls in the Philippines through the provision of comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health services. In the Philippines, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues are arguably the most significant impediment to women's empowerment. The country has the highest fertility rate in Southeast Asia, with women in the lowest wealth quintile having an average of 5.2 children, and with over 22% of women bearing children before the age of 19. Sexual Health and Empowerment (SHE) Philippines is addressing these issues by providing at least 85,000 women and girls, men, and boys with improved access to SRHR services. SHE is expected to indirectly benefit 270,000 people situated in conflict-affected and disadvantaged regions in the Philippines. It provides institutional support to women's rights organizations working on SRHR and gender based violence in the Philippines. The project also supports the implementation of the Government of the Philippines' Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law.

This project aims to improve t...he economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, in targeted developing countries in order to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the support of 740 volunteer placements, the project not only increases the participation of Canadians in international development and key global issues, but also enhances the performance of 45 partners in developing countries in implementing more inclusive, innovative, and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality. The project also works to increase the performance of partners in the education sector, due to the transformative power of education on populations, especially the most marginalized and vulnerable. Project activities include: (1) recruiting and training Canadian experts and graduates on capacity building and cross-cutting development issues, including gender equality, human rights, and the environment, (2) engaging Canadian elementary and secondary school youth in key global issues and organizing public engagement activities promoting the results achieved by partners and volunteers, (3) developing or improving training programs and policies, tools, pedagogical, management and governance methods that promote the inclusion of people in vulnerable or marginalized situations with targeted partners, (4) providing training or support to partner staff on gender equality, human rights, security, sexual and gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, inclusion and retention of girls, and (5) establishing special funds to enable local partners to improve the quality of education and respect for the environment and/or make educational initiatives more inclusive or gender-sensitive. The project seeks to improve t...he accessibility, quality and use of sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls and boys in the Kédougou region of Senegal. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education is central to this project's approach in order to provide young people, especially young girls, with the tools they need to protect themselves against sexual and sexist violence, including female genital mutilation. Project activities include the following: (1) carrying out activities to raise public awareness among parents, local elected officials, and traditional and religious leaders, (2) carrying out community information activities and targeted training activities for adolescent girls and boys in the communities and schools, (3) conducting advocacy campaigns aimed at government bodies, with the support of civil society organizations. The anticipated number of direct beneficiaries is 30,000 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years (50 percent of them girls), and the number of indirect beneficiaries is 75,000 (50 percent of them women and girls). To implement this initiative, two organizations—Crossroads International and ActionAid International Senegal—along with two local partners—the Association pour la Promotion de la Femme Sénégalaise (APROFES) and the Coalition Nationale des Associations et ONG en Faveur de l'Enfant (CONAFE)—will use their extensive experience in the area of protecting women's and girls' rights in Senegal and reducing gender-based violence and sexual and sexist violence. The project aims to advance th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls, reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and support advocacy for SRHR in Sierra Leone and Malawi. For adolescent girls in Sierra Leone and Malawi, the rate of maternal mortality and SGBV is very high. The project provides support to SGBV survivors, including clinical services, legal services, and advocacy, in addition to conducting education sessions on SGBV prevention and referral. The project works to strengthen the capacity of healthcare practitioners to provide high quality, gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and rights-based SRHR services. Project activities include: (1) providing training for staff that is tailored to the specific health needs of adolescents, (2) creating safe spaces for adolescents to receive SRHR services in private, and (3) working with healthcare practitioners on national health objectives. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, healthcare institutions are better able to respond to the SRHR needs of women and girls, empowering them to live healthy lives and make informed choices around their health and rights.

The project aims to reduce mat...ernal mortality and increase sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for women and adolescent girls between the ages of 14 and 49 in Somalia. More specifically, the project works to improve the availability and accessibility of professionally trained and certified midwives who are able to provide quality, rights-based SRHR services to these women and adolescent girls. The project also addresses underlying barriers to women's and adolescent girls' demand for and use of midwifery services by increasing awareness at community level about midwifery and SRHR. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the capacity of midwifery schools and providing them with essential equipment to train midwives from international standards, (2) updating the national midwifery curriculum to include modules and practice on family planning, women's rights and SRHR, as well as female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C), child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention, (3) upgrading the skills of midwifery tutors to improve the quality of training in alignment with the updated curriculum, (4) strengthening midwifery associations and traditional birth attendants in empowering women and adolescent girls and in providing rights-based SRHR information to communities, including FGM/C, CEFM, SGBV prevention and referral, and (5) providing training to girls' and boys' clubs in schools on SRHR in order to increase demand for services, and to identify and refer marginalized adolescent girls and girls to midwifery services. The project expects that the skills of approximately 500 new midwives, 375 in-service midwives and 150 tutors across 15 midwifery schools are upgraded across the country and more than 288,000 pregnant women between the ages of 14 and 49 are reached. Indirectly, the midwives' and the community outreach aim to benefit 5,761,080 people, including 806,550 adolescent girls and 1,920,359 men and boys. In 2020, the Strengthening Mid...wifery Services in South Sudan - Phase II project received an increase of $4.2 million. These additional funds will ensure that the original project's objectives are achieved while adapting to the changing context in South Sudan. The Strengthening Midwifery Services II project aims to increase skilled healthcare providers' availability, especially midwives, to increase access to sexual and reproductive health services and decrease maternal and infant mortality in South Sudan. By building on Phase I, this project aims to ensure that all midwifery, nursing, and other medical students currently enrolled in training programs can successfully complete their studies and enter the workforce to save mothers and babies' lives. Project activities include: (1) developing a new curriculum for nurses and clinical officers, (2) obtaining the equipment required and improving the ability of the faculty members and administrative staff at the training institutes to teach and manage the midwifery and nursing programs, (3) mentoring students and health care providers by international and national UN volunteer midwives during clinical practice to ensure the application of their skills, (3) training given by doctors working in health facilities to encourage a team approach in the provisions of midwifery and obstetric services, and (4) improving the ability of the Ministry of Health to manage and regulate the education of midwives and the ability of South Sudan's national and state-level Nursing and Midwifery Associations to advocate and promote their professions. The project works in partnership with the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM), which provides direct peer-to-peer mentoring support and technical expertise from practicing Canadian midwives and midwifery educators.

This project aims to contribut...e to the empowerment of women and girls in South Sudan by enabling them to make their own decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health and rights in a more peaceful environment. Increasing knowledge, shaping positive attitudes and practices, and challenging norms help support women's and girls' agency and decision-making power. Project activities include: (1) producing a radio programme to provide fact-based education on sexuality and family planning, (2) including storylines about sexual and reproductive health and rights and how these relate to violence and conflict in one of BBC Media Action's popular radio dramas, (3) training and supporting local media organizations on to how to report and produce coverage that reflects the world as seen through the eyes of women as well as men, with the goal of improving women's standing in their communities, and (4) training and supporting community groups to discuss topics presented in radio programs, such as domestic violence and contraception, and identify how lessons learned apply to their local community. Together these activities help increase community members' knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights—including the negative impacts of gender-based violence and violence against women and girls—while contributing to increased support for women and girls to control their own reproductive decision-making and to access appropriate health and support services.

The Uzazi Uzima II project see...ks to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in all five districts of Simiyu region, Tanzania by improving the availability of quality adolescent, maternal and newborn health services in underserved districts through three mutually supportive mechanisms. The project will: improve the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers on maternal, newborn and sexual/reproductive health to ensure they can provide critical services to their beneficiaries in a gender sensitive and responsive way, improve the infrastructure and supply-chain for health facilities to encourage women, girls and their families to use services, and improve gender responsive health management systems (such as planning, prioritization and management of services). The project will also increase awareness and understanding of sexual, reproductive, maternal and child health with special focus on men's participation in reproductive, maternal and newborn health and decision making. Project activities include: (1) training health workers from four health centres and 24 dispensaries on: essential maternal and newborn health skills, such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC), Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC), family planning, nutrition counselling, and newborn resuscitation, (2) refurbishing four health centres and 24 dispensaries to provide CEmONC, BEmONC, water, sanitation and hygiene and family planning services, including a satellite safe blood center at the regional hospital, (3) equipping targeted health facilities with the necessary stocks of equipment and commodities to provide BEmONC, CEmONC, family planning and safe blood services, (4) establishing a referral system for maternal and newborn health care and family planning services across all tiers of the health system, (5) training and supporting Ministry of Health and facility-based managers, and health workers to improve community to facility linkages (enhanced data collection, consolidation, analysis and reporting), and (6) training and equipping community health workers, traditional birth attendants, traditional healers, and local leaders to provide community-level health promotion services (including maternal and newborn health, water, sanitation and hygiene, family planning, nutrition, gender issues and use of mobile health technology to mobilize communities). The project is implemented in collaboration with Amref Health Africa in Tanzania, Marie Stopes Tanzania and Deloitte. REPLICATING THE MAMATOTO PROGR...AM IN RURAL TANZANIA (IMCHA)

Replicating the MamaToto Progr...am in Rural Tanzania (IMCHA)
more

This project will address high... maternal and newborn mortality in Tanzania by adapting and implementing a maternal and newborn health intervention approach that follows the MamaToto process.Health care in rural TanzaniaThe rural regions of Geita and Mwanza have some of the worst maternal and child health indicators in the country. Local health facilities are under-resourced and possess limited management capacity. While the national policy calls for a community health-worker program, the reality is that there are gaps in coordinating and implementing community health services at local levels. Community health-workers have limited training and supervision. The Government of Tanzania's new commitment to improving mothers and children's well-being needs evidence that will support the creation of stronger health systems through community-based interventions. The MamaToto approachThis project draws on the low-cost MamaToto (mother-baby) process implemented in Uganda, where substantial gains in maternal and child health were achieved. These gains took place through an approach that strengthened services at health facilities and within communities. This project will implement and evaluate a modified version of MamaToto in rural Tanzania, aligned with the country's current policy guidance for community health services. The project team will engage district leaders, strengthen facility services, and develop the role of community health workers. They will demonstrate if and how community-based interventions can reduce maternal and child mortality by effectively bringing low-cost program efforts to scale under government leadership. This project aims to scale up national maternal and child health programs that will improve survival rates for mothers and children. Based on these interventions, the project team will develop an implementation package that includes lessons learned, tools, and other materials to allow other jurisdictions to undertake similar initiatives.Project partnersThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. The program is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Building an Enhanced Cadre of ...Community Health Workers to Improve Maternal and Newborn Health in Rural Tanzania (IMCHA)

One woman dies in childbirth i...n Tanzania every hour. With such high rates of maternal and newborn mortality, this project will address the problem by giving community health workers greater skills to assess and treat women, while extending the healthcare system's reach to rural women and newborns. Rural obstacles to better healthIn the Mara region of Tanzania, nearly 60% of births occur outside of health facilities. A high proportion of these births result in poor outcomes for the mother, newborn, or both. Reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Tanzania involves overcoming barriers to accessing rural healthcare facilities and improving access to quality community health care. These barriers include: -lack of qualified human resources-long distances to health facilities-high cost and poor availability of transportation-lack of knowledge of the risks related to non-facility births-cultural beliefs about avoiding professional careExtending health care's reachThe project team will train community healthcare workers to improve how they assess and treat women and infants, and extend health care to rural areas. They will evaluate interventions to improve antenatal care and delivery, such as prenatal vitamins and travel vouchers to get women to health facilities for screening of hypertensive disorders, HIV, and other conditions. Community health workers will use mobile phones to improve routine processes such as birth registration and monitoring stocks and workflows. The research team will generate evidence on sustainable interventions for delivering community-based primary health care in Tanzania that improves access to antenatal care and skilled delivery. They will focus on ways to enhance the knowledge and role of community health workers and to increase their use of mobile health (mhealth). The project will help guide policymakers at all levels of government to explore scaling up interventions that can improve outcomes for mothers and newborns. Project partnersThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. The program is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project, in partnership w...ith Tanzania's Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, and local government authorities, is supporting the achievement of results of the Government of Tanzania's National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania (2016 – 2020), a sub-strategy of Tanzania's Fourth Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSPIV). This initiative emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level, strengthening the health system referral pyramid, from community to national level, improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, essential medicines and commodities, and information communications technology), addressing human resources for health shortage and distribution, improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing, and promoting public private partnership. The implementation of the National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania is focused on improving the management and delivery of primary health care services to improve maternal, newborn and child health. Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania's pooled fund for the health sector to improve governance and to strengthen the health system performance. Since 2006, Canada has been working in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems, increase donor coordination and harmonization, and strengthen mutual accountability. This support also fosters greater policy dialogue among donors, government and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focused aid, as well as long-term development results.

The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives and health professionals to increase their skills, (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies, and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives. Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country.

The project will ensure that g...irls realize their rights to safe, quality, gender-responsive education by improving the participation of adolescent girls in primary and secondary education. It will increase the availability of gender-responsive school facilities such as latrines and access to adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services. The project will address the financial constraints faced by poor girls and their families by providing economic opportunities to support girls' education. The project will offer reentry points for out-of-school girls, with particular attention to girls in remote communities and living with disabilities. To support girls' transition from primary to secondary school, or to alternative learning programs for girls barred from enrolling due to pregnancy or early motherhood, KAGIS will implement cost-effective solutions to enable safe transport to secondary and alternative learning centres.

The project aims to address ga...ps of un-met comprehensive sexual and reproductive health systems, services and education in three districts in South West Uganda. The project scales up a successful and innovative model, the Mama Toto implementation model, which focuses on strengthening existing government and civil society structures, and district and community leadership. This project aims to strengthen the capacity of local health facilities to deliver sexual and reproductive health services to the local population, as well as strengthen the capacity of community and local leaders to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and education. Project activities include: (1) aligning SRHR education and awareness messages with local priorities, national guidelines and best evidence, (2) establishing SRHR 'champions', (3) identifying and addressing SRHR-related health system gaps, (4) providing SRHR-focused training, (5) providing minor upgrades and equipment for health facilities, and (6) improving quality of sexual and reproductive health services especially for post-abortion care, family planning, gender-based violence and HIV/STD management. This project is expected to promote and deliver SRHR services and education to 4,352 women and 2,102 men, including community health workers, other community agents, youth champions, health facility clinicians, governance committee members and district leaders. The project is expected to indirectly benefit 950,000 people (490,000 women and 460,000 men) comprised of the populations in the targeted districts and communities. This project is part of the 20...20 United Nations-coordinated Humanitarian Response Plan for the West Bank and Gaza Strip and responds to the Ministerial priority of humanitarian action to reach the poorest and most vulnerable.
