The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE); (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR; (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models; and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations.

This project aims to support c...ommunity-based services that will improve maternal health in Ethiopia, a country with some of the worst health indicators in sub-Saharan Africa. Women's use of maternal and child health services has significant gaps between urban and rural areas. Healthy mothers, healthy babiesThe Government of Ethiopia is committed to improving maternal health. While some key indicators have improved, maternal mortality has not decreased significantly. The Ethiopian Health Department data suggests many of these maternal and neonatal deaths arise from home births in the absence of a skilled and experienced birth attendant. Strengthening community-based services is therefore important to ensure that mothers have access to services that result in safer deliveries.Technology, communication, skills developmentThis project will implement interventions such as: -training traditional birth attendants and equipping them with mobile phones-developing communication and education strategies for religious leaders and men -developing healthcare worker skills for safe deliveriesThe project team will evaluate the use of improved maternal waiting areas and health extension worker practitioners for their impact on maternal health outcomes. The research will be carried out in close partnership with the Ethiopian Health Department. Researchers will identify interventions that are the most effective at improving maternal and child health services with a view to scale up nationally. The project team will produce policy and media briefs, articles, and a project website to share information about the project and their findings.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives and health professionals to increase their skills; (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies; and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives. Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country.

The project aims to address th...e unmet sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) needs faced by women and youth between the ages of 13 and 24 in the regions of Amhara and Oromia in Ethiopia. These targeted communities have high levels of child marriage, early pregnancy, and related maternal health complications due to the particularly low sexual and reproductive health coverage, and prevalence of gender discriminatory cultural norms. Project activities include: (1) providing SRHR training to health staff; (2) providing medical equipment to health centres; (3) mapping of areas where SRHR services are needed but not yet provided, and areas where services are currently provided; and (4) providing SRHR advocacy activities for adolescents, their parents, religious leaders and local authorities. The project also aims to integrate SRHR considerations in district-level budget planning, strengthen local women's organisations, and work with local authorities to align with local priorities outlined in Ethiopia's Adolescent and Youth Health Strategy (2016-2020) and the Ethiopian Health Transformation Plan (2015-2020). This project expects to contribute directly to the improved SRHR of 270,000 adolescent girls and boys, and indirectly affect up to 2,995,000 community members (including women, men, community leaders and health workers).

LEYAATA ANE/LEYAATA ANE
|
Leyaata Ane/Leyaata Ane
|
This project aims to reduce ne...onatal mortality in rural northern Ghana by building on a previous initiative on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) called Leyaata. Leyaata Ane seeks to double the geographic scope of the previous Leyaata project by adding an additional 80 communities to the original 82. It aims to improve the delivery of health care, specifically healthcare around birth, by training 50 health workers, encouraging the adoption of codes of conduct, and ensuring facilities meet basic requirements for safe care around birth. A proven home visit program conducted by community-based health volunteers is used to increase access to this improved care. Project activities include: (1) providing health workers with training in essential interventions at birth and for newborns; (2) rehabilitating and equipping local facilities with essential technologies; (3) training and equipping community based volunteers to provide home visits for antenatal counselling and neonate monitoring; (4) distributing long-lasting insecticidal nets to all pregnant women and new mothers; and (5) facilitating support groups to promote women's care around birth and shared decision-making. The project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 39,000 people including approximately 20,000 children. In addition, more than 139,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results. Ghana Rural Integrated Development is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partner: Northern Empowerment Association.

This project aims to contribut...e to the reduction of maternal and child mortality amongst vulnerable women and children, including adolescent girls, in targeted underserved remote areas of Bangladesh, Ghana, Haiti, Nigeria and Senegal. The project works in these five countries to improve the quality, availability and utilization of essential maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The project also works to strengthen the Canadian public's understanding of the reasons behind Canada's global investments in MNCH and SRH. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care-seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, and providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; and (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government on health resources and planning of services. Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), as well as with Plan International offices in the project's five targeted countries, local governments, and local NGOs.

The project aims to empower ad...olescent girls in Ghana, including those most-vulnerable, through the provision, and access to, gender-responsive comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning and contraception. Teachers are not trained or provided with the material required to properly engage with adolescents on sexuality education. Furthermore, there is also limited access to gender-sensitive and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services. Project activities include: (1) training teachers to deliver standardized, gender-sensitive and youth-friendly comprehensive sexuality education; (2) creating new, and strengthen existing, adolescent health clubs; (3) delivering comprehensive sexuality education to adolescent girls; (4) training frontline health care workers in the provision of youth-friendly and gender-sensitive services; (5) increasing the number of health facilities providing quality adolescent friendly health services; (6) raising awareness of adolescent girls to increase the demand for family planning; (7) strengthening procurement, supply and logistics management system for last mile distribution of contraceptives to young people; and (8) engaging in social and behaviour change communication to raise awareness on gender equality and create an enabling environment for adolescent girls to defend, promote and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights.

The project, Improving Materna...l Participation and Access to Community Training (IMPACT), aims to increase the utilization and improve the delivery of culturally appropriate health services to pregnant and lactating mothers and their children in 111 hard-to-reach indigenous communities in Guatemala and Honduras. Project activities include: (1) providing maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) centres with essential health care equipment and ensuring that they are adequately staffed with well-trained MNCH aides; (2) delivery of lactation workshops, as well as one-on-one counseling and support, to encourage women to initiate early and exclusive breastfeeding of their infants for at least five months; (3) delivering awareness raising workshops among key decision-makers in communities of MNCH related health risks, and enabling the health-related decision-making of vulnerable women; and (4) delivery of nutrition demonstration workshops to pregnant and lactating women. This project is expected to contribute to the improved health of 68,400 women and children, including 13,800 girls and 13,300 boys. In addition, more than 160,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly. CAUSE Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with CAUSE Honduras, CAUSE Guatemala and Instituticion Mam de Desarrollo Integral (IMDI). This project seeks to contribu...te to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. Many women and children are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality in Guatemala and Kenya where high rates for chronic malnutrition and infant mortality, as well as high numbers of deaths due to complications from child birth prevailed over the last years. The project focuses on: (1) increasing the effectiveness of community referral systems; (2) increasing awareness of existing health services; and (3) strengthening the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. It works towards improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant nutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as by looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, the project strengthens local nutrition related health information systems through improved management of data collection and dissemination, and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly, and more than 880,000 people indirectly, from activities led in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health; and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations.

The project aims to reduce sex...ual and gender-based violence (SGBV), reduce adolescent pregnancies, and advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls and young women in Indigenous rural communities in western Guatemala and Honduras. The project focuses on supporting the poorest and most vulnerable women and girls. In Guatemala, girls between the ages of 10 and 14 are giving birth in astonishingly high numbers. In Honduras, domestic violence remains the leading reported crime, yet the number of unreported cases is much higher. Both Guatemala and Honduras have extremely high rates of violence that destabilizes the social and economic systems. Project activities include: (1) providing workshops on entrepreneurship, business skills, financial literacy and vocational skills to adolescent girls and young women; (2) providing support to SGBV survivors, including adolescent-specific post-violence care services, and counselling and resources to access safe houses; (3) providing training on gender equality, SGBV detection, and advocacy on both SRHR and the reduction of SGBV to community leaders, youth councils, women's health committees and community health committees; and (4) adolescent-specific SRHR services for adolescent boys and girls.

The project seeks to help redu...ce maternal and neonatal mortality in Haiti by improving the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls in four of the country's underserved departments (Grande Anse, Sud-Est, Nippes and Nord-Ouest). In addition to addressing gender inequality, the project is helping to build women's and girls' capacity to make more informed choices when exercising their sexual and reproductive rights. Project activities include: (1) training midwives at the Institut national supérieur de formation des sages-femmes (INSFSF) - the national midwifery training institute - and in two new satellite/practice schools; (2) deploying these newly trained midwives to improve the range and quality of services, as well as to spur demand for these services through a community approach; (3) strengthening the legal framework of the midwifery profession, particularly by regulating the profession in accordance with international standards. The project is expected to directly benefit 205,014 women and girls, 170,266 of which are women of childbearing age and 34,749 of whom are girls aged between 10 and 14 .

The project (also known by its... French acronym PRISMA - Prise en charge intégrée de la santé de la mère et de l'enfant dans l'Artibonite) aims to increase the coverage of sexual and reproductive health services and quality care for mothers, newborns and children in 8 of the 15 communes of the Artibonite department in Haiti. This is achieved by strengthening the health governance of the department; strengthening institutional emergency obstetric and neonatal care and community building. Project activities include: (1) constructing or rehabilitating spaces to improve services in seven basic emergency obstetric and neonatal health care centers for pregnant women; (2) training and mentoring managers, nurses and health workers in family planning and maternal and neonatal health care; 3) carrying out micro-projects for the renovation or construction of drinking water supply, sanitation and hygiene infrastructures in the health facilities of the project; (4) training and accompanying 150 members of local voluntary women's organizations and doubling the number of community health workers (269) responsible for sensitizing and referring populations to available health services; and (5) strengthening the functioning of the supply centers responsible for the distribution of medicines and medical equipment throughout the department. Overall, health facilities supported by the project seek to provide such services to approximately 146 000 women and 66 000 children under five.

Developing and Socializing a F...ramework for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Morocco

The Middle East and North Afri...ca region is experiencing a period of transition imposed by changing political, demographic, social, and economic environments. Protracted conflict and growing populations of refugees and other displaced people have defined the region in recent years. Past gains made in accessing women's health and reproductive health services are losing ground. This is especially acute among adolescent boys and girls attempting to access sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services. Growing risks related to SRH for this age group include sexual and gender-based violence, early marriage, and resulting SRH-related illnesses and deaths. Responding to these needs and creating effective prevention measures requires a context-specific, evidence-based framework upon which to base policies and actions. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa Health Policy Forum, an independent non-governmental forum to discuss health policy issues in the region. The aim of the project is to develop a regional, sustainable, gender-responsive, and evidence-based multi-sectoral adolescent sexual and reproductive health framework in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco. The framework will address adolescent SRH issues as they pertain to education, communication, social norms, and legal frameworks. Using a gender and rights-based approach, this framework will be developed with different actors, including adolescent boys and girls, and will be tested and refined to optimize its uptake and influence. The project will produce position papers for each of the four countries, as well as targeted analyses and briefs for specific user groups. Key stakeholders include adolescent girls and boys, parents, educators, non-governmental organizations, health workers, and policymakers. Expected changes from the project include improvements in adolescent knowledge and understanding; awareness and agency with regards to sexual and reproductive health information and services; greater engagement across various sectors in a given country and across the four countries; and strengthened capacities to apply the framework by key stakeholders in each of the countries.

The project, Access to Quality... Care Through Extending and Strengthening Health Systems (AQCESS), aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children (MNCH) of communities and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan. In these regions some MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality, are particularly poor, with women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. Project activities include: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme; Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya.

Integrating a neonatal healthc...are package for Malawi (IMCHA)

Malawi has the highest preterm... delivery rate in the world. This, paired with inadequate newborn care at health facilities, results in high rates of infant mortality. Managing the healthcare needs of preterm infants remains a challenge. They face complications during and after birth, and they have an increased risk of death, chronic medical problems, and malnutrition later in life. Many life-saving interventions have been successful in Malawi but they have not been scaled up into routine clinical practice. This project will determine whether a package of neonatal interventions, known as the Malawi Neonatal Package of Care, can be implemented at the health facility level to reduce neonatal mortality. Interventions include low-cost continuous airway support for breathing, breastfeeding support, Kangaroo Mother Care (skin-to-skin, mother-to-baby contact), hot cots to prevent hypothermia, management of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and phototherapy lights to treat jaundice. Researchers will investigate the best ways to implement these interventions in routine clinical practice. The project will directly train nurses, doctors, and other health care providers. It will also produce peer-reviewed journal articles, and provide presentations at hospitals and nursing organizations, interviews with media, and policy-relevant information to decision-makers. This is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative,a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Malawi has high rates of mater...nal mortality despite concerted efforts to increase the rate of births at health facilities. In response, the Ministry of Health implemented a Standards-Based Management and Recognition for Reproductive Health initiative to improve the quality of health services. Similar initiatives have proven successful in other countries. However, to date, only limited improvements have been observed in Malawi, and no improvements were noted in the quality of care during labour and delivery. This project will further assess the implementation of this initiative and its impact on the quality of maternal health care in Malawi. The researchers will look at the context on the ground and how it has impacted implementation. Their aim is to provide the Ministry of Health with information and recommendations to improve the quality of and access to care. A particular focus of the study will be on women's experiences of care.Researchers will produce knowledge in conjunction with key stakeholders, including the public and policymakers, to make recommendations for the implementation of the Standards-Based Management and Recognition for Reproductive Health initiative in Malawi. Research findings will be presented at strategic forums in the country as well as at conferences. The information will also be published in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, the study will promote knowledge and skills transfer between Canada and Malawi. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a seven-year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.
