This project aims to improve a...ccess to maternal and newborn services and enhance the health of the vulnerable and poor of Bauchi State, Nigeria. Activities include: (1) increasing the knowledge of women of child bearing age and community leaders on maternal and newborn health and family planning, (2) improving the skills and capacities of health service providers, the availability of medicines and supplies, and the state of health care centres, and (3) improving health governance groups to ensure these interventions are sustainable. Ultimately, the project seeks to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. / Le projet vise l'amélioration des services de santé de base pour les mères et les nouveau-nés et l'amélioration des conditions de vies des populations vulnérables dans l'état de Bauchi au Nigéria. Les activités comprennent : 1) l'augmentation des connaissances pour les femmes en âge de procréer ainsi que l'augmentation des connaissances pour les leaders communautaires sur la santé maternelle et infantile et sur la planification familiale, 2) l'amélioration des compétences et des capacités des prestataires de services de la santé et l'amélioration de la disponibilité des médicaments et matériels ainsi que l'amélioration de l'état des centres de soins de santé, 3) l'amélioration de la gouvernance pour les groupes de santé afin d'assurer la durabilité des interventions sanitaires. Le but ultime du projet est de réduire la mortalité maternelle et infantile.

The project aims to empower wo...men and adolescent girls in targeted northern communities of Nigeria to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. Project activities include: (1) training and mentoring small drug stores and pharmacies to provide youth-friendly gender-sensitive family planning services including counselling, provision of a minimum of five contraceptive products, including birth control injectable shots, and health care referrals, (2) recruiting, training and mentoring a rural women family planning sales force for family planning products, (3) training and mentoring health care workers on the provision of sexual and reproductive health counselling and services, including long-acting reversible contraceptives and postpartum services, (4) developing gender-sensitive demand-generation strategies for increasing awareness and adoption of family planning services among women and adolescent girls and boys in both rural and urban settings and in and out-of- school settings, (5) developing and implementing a community engagement strategy targeting religious, traditional, community opinion leaders and men to support women's reproductive health rights and empowerment, and (6) strengthening the family planning supply chain and implementing an advocacy strategy to increase funding commitments by states towards reliable sexual and reproductive health commodity procurement and distribution. The project is expected to reach an estimated 2.6 million women of reproductive age, of which approximately 1 million are between 10 and 24 years of age. / Le projet vise à donner aux femmes et aux adolescentes des collectivités ciblées du Nord du Nigéria les moyens de faire des choix éclairés en matière de santé sexuelle et reproductive. Les activités de projet comprennent : 1) la formation et l'encadrement des petites pharmacies afin qu'elles offrent des services de planification familiale qui tiennent compte des sexospécificités et qui sont adaptés aux jeunes, ce qui comprend la formulation de conseils, l'offre d'au moins cinq produits contraceptifs (notamment des contraceptifs injectables) et de l'envoi vers des soins de santé, 2) le recrutement, la formation et l'encadrement d'une force de vente de produits de planification familiale pour les femmes vivant en milieu rural, 3) la formation et l'encadrement des travailleurs de la santé relativement à la prestation de conseils et de services en matière de santé sexuelle et reproductive, ce qui comprend les méthodes contraceptives réversibles de longue durée et les services postnataux, 4) l'élaboration de stratégies de création de la demande adaptées au sexe pour accroître la sensibilisation et l'adoption de services de planification familiale chez les femmes et les adolescents en milieu rural et urbain, et notamment en milieu scolaire, 5) l'élaboration et la mise en œuvre d'une stratégie de mobilisation communautaire ciblant les hommes et les leaders d'opinion religieux, traditionnels et

The project enables adolescent...s to better exercise their reproductive rights, as well as make informed choices on their sexual and reproductive health. An innovative community-based model is used to promote positive gender norms among adolescents and their families. Project activities include: (1) training public health workers and private sector providers on gender-sensitive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services delivery, including family planning, contraceptives, post-abortion care, and sexual and gender-based violence, and establishing and operating gender-sensitive, adolescent-friendly safe spaces in health facilities to deliver SRHR services to adolescent boys and girls, (2) training community change agents (including religious and traditional leaders) to raise awareness in a gender-sensitive manner on SRHR, and promote safe space activities for adolescent girls and boys, partners, parents and community members, and (3) supporting advocacy and coalition building between youth advocacy forums and like-minded organizations, including women's rights organizations, to advocate for improved SRHR services within their communities. The project is expected to reach approximately 100,000 married and unmarried adolescents, including 55,000 very young adolescents aged 10 to 14 directly, and an additional 400,000 community members indirectly. / Le projet vise à permettre aux adolescents de mieux exercer leurs droits reproductifs et de faire des choix éclairés en matière de leur proper santé sexuelle et reproductive. Un modèle communautaire novateur est utilisé pour promouvoir des normes sexospécifiques positives auprès des adolescents et de leurs familles. The initiative aims to reduce ...maternal and perinatal mortality in twelve rural communities located in Koulikoro and Segou in Mali as well as in the Echarate district in Peru. In Mali and targeted areas in Peru, perinatal mortality and chronic malnutrition rates are very high.Activities include: (1) training on perinatal health, birthing techniques, education on mothers and children's health; (2) equipment of twelve Community health centers and seventy-five maternity hospitals in Mali as well as height health centers in Peru; (3) the production and distribution of television and radio programs on maternal, newborn and children under five health issues; (4) support for the local food production through agricultural cooperatives. In Canada, the project increases the awareness of the Estrie public on the health issues of mothers and children in Mali and Peru.Carrefour de Solidarité International is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Ayni Desarrollo in Peru and l'Association Kilabo in Mali./L'initiative vise à réduire la mortalité maternelle et périnatale dans douze communes rurales situées à koulikoro et Ségou au Mali ainsi que dans le district d' Echarate au Pérou. Au Mali et dans les zones ciblées au Pérou, les taux de mortalités périnatales et de malnutrition chronique sont très élevés.Parmi les activités du projet : 1) des formations sur la santé périnatale, les techniques d'accouchement, l'animation/ sensibilisation, les services offerts aux mères et aux enfants, l'interculturalité; 2) l'équipement de douze centres de santé communautaire, soixante-quinze maternités au Mali et huit centres de santé au Pérou; 3) la réalisation et diffusion de reportages télévisuels et radiophoniques sur les enjeux de santé spécifique aux mères, aux nouveau-nés et aux enfants de moins de cinq ans; 4) l'appui à la production locale d'aliments via des coopératives agricoles. Au Canada, le public de l'Estrie est sensibilisé sur la santé des mères et des enfants au Mali et au Pérou.Carrefour de Solidarité International met en œuvre ce projet en collaboration avec le partenaire local suivant: Ayni Desarrollo en Pérou et l'Association Kilabo en Mali.

This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities, (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries, (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery, (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities, (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food, and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania. / Le projet vise à réduire les maladies et la mortalité chez les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé (hommes et femmes) et des accoucheuses traditionnelles pour qu'ils puissent donner des conseils éclairés sur les soins prénataux et postnataux, promouvoir des habitudes saines, offrir des soins de santé de base, repérer les grossesses à haut risque et orienter les patientes vers les établissements de santé gouvernementaux, 2) approvisionnement d'un certain nombre de centres de santé en équipement essentiel à la réduction des infections, à la surveillance des signes vitaux des fœtus et à la facilitation des accouchements de nuit, 3) construction de dispensaires et de résidences pour les infirmières et les femmes enceintes afin de favoriser l'accouchement dans un établissement, 4) création de moyens de transport rapides et abordables vers les établissements de santé, 5) amélioration de l'accès à l'eau potable et aux aliments nutritifs, 6) mobilisation et outillage des communautés et des dirigeants des villages pour leur permettre d'obtenir des résultats durables en matière de SMNE et d'égalité entre les sexes. This project will examine how ...to strengthen the Bajenu Gox Initiative's contribution to improving maternal and child health across Senegal. Former President Abdoulye Wade founded this community-based health worker program to train women to be leaders in reproductive health. Based on the Wolof term for godmother, the Bajenu Gox Initiative provides support to women during the prenatal, delivery, and post-natal periods. It also provides advice about caring for children under 5. Community support for women This project aims to improve the Bajenu Gox Initiative's long-term stability at the community level and establish systems that will allow the program to scale up nationally. Researchers will use a community development approach based on a gender and social equity perspective to examine how to enhance the initiative's contribution. The research is structured in two phases: -literature searches on holistic community-based maternal and child health approaches that have been tested in Senegal and other African countries, and possibly in Canada -intervention research based on the findings in this literature The project team will share the results through -situation assessment and economic feasibility studies -training materials -a guide on how to effectively manage the initiative -documentary to highlight the initiative's impacts -scientific publications -presentations at international conferences Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project seeks to improve ...access to sexual and reproductive health services (including family planning), as well as strengthening the capacity of community-based health workers to deliver sexual and reproductive health services, and promoting sexual and reproductive rights. The project focuses on improving the sexual and reproductive health of more than 635,000 women (aged 15-49 years), including 320,000 adolescents (aged 15-24 years).Project activities include: (1) increasing the capacity of health centres to deliver emergency obstetric and neonatal care; (2) providing nutrition and sexual and reproductive health services (including at least five family planning methods); (3) behaviour change communication activities; (4) providing care for victims of gender-based violence; and (5) completing a mapping activity in order to develop a data management system for data on female adolescent reproductive health and sexual and gender based violence./Ce projet vise à améliorer l'accès aux services de santé sexuelle et de la reproduction, incluant la planification familiale et le renforcement des capacités des prestataires communautaires de services de santé sexuelle et de la reproduction, et la promotion des droits connexes. Le projet permet d'améliorer la santé sexuelle et reproductive de plus de 635 000 femmes (15 à 49 ans) dont 320 000 adolescentes (15 à 24 ans) au sud du Sénégal.Parmi les principales activités du projet : 1) une augmentation des capacités des centres de santé pour fournir des services de soins obstétricaux et néonataux d'urgence; 2) l'approvisionnement de services de nutrition et de santé sexuelle et reproductive (incluant au moins cinq méthodes contraceptives); 3) la communication sur le changement de comportement; 4) la prise en charge des victimes de violences basées sur le genre; 5) la réalisation d'une cartographie pour produire un système de gestion de données sur les violences basées sur le genre et de la santé reproductive des adolescentes.

This project aims to enhance t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights for marginalized groups in targeted countries. It seeks to reduce the number of unsafe abortions and offer wider and safer choices for women and girls to choose if and when to have children. The project provides selected countries with direct support to increase access and usage of family planning and safe and legal abortion services.Specific activities include: (1) conducting advocacy for improved policies and regulations around family planning and abortion; (2) holding community-mobilization events providing information about safe and legal abortion and where to access it; and (3) increasing access to high-quality safe abortion with integrated post-abortion family planning services./Le projet vise à améliorer la santé sexuelle et reproductive et les droits connexes de groupes marginalisés dans des pays ciblés. Il vise à réduire le nombre d'avortements pratiqués dans des conditions dangereuses et à offrir des choix plus vastes et plus sûrs pour permettre aux femmes et aux filles de décider si elles veulent avoir des enfants et à quel moment. Le projet fournit aux pays sélectionnés un soutien direct pour accroître l'accès aux services de planification familiale et aux services d'avortement sûrs et légaux et leur utilisation.En particulier, les activités comprendront les suivantes : (1) mener des activités de défense des intérêts pour l'amélioration des politiques et des règlements concernant la planification familiale et l'avortement; (2) tenir des activités de mobilisation des collectivités pour fournir de l'information au sujet des services d'avortement sûrs et légaux et de l'endroit où on peut y accéder; (3) accroître l'accès à des services d'avortement de haute qualité ainsi qu'à des services intégrés de planification familiale après-avortement.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of poor and socially excluded people, or people living in underserved areas, especially women, girls and youth, in Mali, Malawi, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. It seeks to improve access to quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and strengthen governments' support in these countries.Project activities include: (1) strengthening the ability of International Planned Parenthood Federation's Member Associations' to provide a full range of integrated SRH services and to disseminate information about these services; and (2) increasing the ability of civil society organizations to hold governments to account for their SRH services and related spending commitments, and to build public support for SRHR. An estimated 10.4 million people are expected to benefit from sexual and reproductive health services supported through this project, which is expected to contribute to averting 1.5 million unintended pregnancies./Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs des personnes pauvres et socialement exclues ou des personnes qui vivent dans des régions mal desservies, en particulier les femmes, les filles et les jeunes, au Mali, au Malawi, en Colombie, en République dominicaine et au Guatemala. Il vise à améliorer l'accès à des services de santé sexuelle et reproductive de qualité et à renforcer le soutien des gouvernements dans ces pays.Les activités de projet sont notamment les suivantes : (1) renforcer la capacité des associations membres d'International Planned Parenthood Federation à fournir un éventail complet de services intégrés de santé sexuelle et reproductive et à diffuser de l'information au sujet de ces services; et (2) accroître la capacité des organisations de la société civile à tenir les gouvernements responsables de leurs services de santé sexuelle et reproductive et des engagements de dépenses connexes, et à renforcer le soutien du public à l'égard de la santé et des droits sexuels et reproductifs. Implementing comprehensive, co...mmunity-focused primary health care is a major challenge in post-conflict regions such as South Sudan and neighbouring Northern Uganda. South Sudan is recovering from two decades of civil war that have destroyed education and health infrastructure. Torit Hospital, one of the major hospitals in the region, is poorly staffed and lacks specialists and basic equipment. The situation is similar in Northern Uganda. In the District of Gulu, the burden of disease has largely been managed through St. Mary's Hospital Lacor. This region has not been able to achieve the progress in maternal and child health that has been reached in the central part of Uganda. This project assesses the implementation and scale of community-focused reproductive and child health interventions in post-conflict settings. It focuses on establishing evidence to promote sustainability and resilience, with the goal of ensuring access to essential health services by vulnerable populations. The researchers will explore strategies for improved maternal care and child nutrition services, cervical cancer screening, and support for women's empowerment through outreach efforts from the two hospitals. Research findings will be validated through ministries of health at the local, district, and national levels to optimize engagement and to encourage adoption of the project's recommendations to strengthen systems. The results of the study will directly inform the ministries of health in South Sudan and in Uganda on related interventions, including a scalable model for improved community-based services. This will address barriers to interventions, reduce maternal and child mortality, and extend the reach of health services to communities that have faced shocks and stressors. This is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre. This project aims to empower w...omen and girls in South Sudan to make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, free from discrimination, coercion and violence. This is done by enhancing the availability and quality of sexual and reproductive health services in targeted communities, as well as working with community leaders and members to positively influence attitudes and social norms related to sexual and reproductive health, rights and health services. Project activities include: (1) establishing eighteen static and mobile sexual and reproductive health clinics, (2) engaging 60 community-based sexual and reproductive health promoters to create awareness and mobilize communities to demand services, (3) mapping and disseminating relevant rights and gender equality policy documents in targeted communities, and (4) training 180 volunteers as sexual and reproductive health and rights promoters in three selected communities. The project is expected to reach over 34,000 women and adolescent girls through the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services, and will contribute to improving the health, rights and status of many women and adolescent girls in South Sudan. / Le projet vise à renforcer le pouvoir des femmes et des filles du Soudan du Sud à prendre leurs propres décisions en ce qui concerne leur santé sexuelle et reproductive, sans discrimination, coercition, ni violence. Cela se fait en améliorant la disponibilité et la qualité des services de santé sexuelle et reproductive dans des communautés ciblées, ainsi qu'en travaillant avec des dirigeants et des membres de la communauté afin d'influencer positivement les attitudes et les normes sociales en ce qui a trait à la santé sexuelle et reproductive, aux droits et aux services de santé. Le projet comprend notamment les activités suivantes : 1) établissement de dix-huit cliniques de santé sexuelle et reproductive, fixes ou mobiles, 2) participation de 60 personnes de la communauté qui seront responsables de faire la promotion de la santé sexuelle et reproductive afin de sensibiliser et de mobiliser les communautés à la demande de services, 3) recenser et diffuser les documents pertinents sur les droits et l'égalité entre les sexes dans les communautés ciblées, 4) former 180 bénévoles pour qui deviennent des promoteurs de la santé sexuelle et reproductive et des droits dans trois communautés sélectionnées. Le projet devrait atteindre plus de 34 000 femmes et adolescentes grâce à la prestation de services de santé sexuelle et reproductive, et contribuera à améliorer la santé, les droits et le statut de nombreuses femmes et adolescentes au Soudan du Sud.

This project fully supports th...e Ministerial priority of empowering women and girls and also contributes to the Ministerial commitment of contributing $650M over three years in support of SRHR initiatives. It also contributes to the Africa target. The project aims to use the power of the media and communications to challenge social norms and practices that limit women and girls' control over their bodies and reproductive decision making, and which also undermine the advancement of gender equality. This includes raising issues related to SRHR sexual and gender-based violence, and promoting the inclusion of women and girls in peace processes./Ce projet appuie pleinement la priorité ministérielle de l'autonomisation des femmes et des filles et contribue également à l'engagement ministériel de verser 650 M $ sur trois ans à l'appui des initiatives de SSRD. Il contribue également à la cible de l'Afrique. Le projet vise à utiliser le pouvoir des médias et des communications pour remettre en question les normes sociales et les pratiques qui limitent le contrôle des femmes et des filles sur leur corps et la prise de décision en matière de reproduction, et qui compromettent également l'égalité des sexes. Cela comprend la sensibilisation aux problèmes liés à la violence sexuelle et sexiste liée aux SSRD et la promotion de l'inclusion des femmes et des filles dans les processus de paix.
