The project supports the Canad...ian Partnership for Women and Children's Health (CanWaCH), a network of Canadian non-governmental organizations, health professionals and academia representatives who work on issues related to maternal, newborn and child health in developing countries. The project aims to: (1) enhance knowledge sharing among its member organizations of best practices in women's, adolescents' and children's health globally, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); (2) increase the contribution of Canadian partners and technical experts to report on global health; and (3) improve engagement of Canadian stakeholders, the private sector and the public on global women's, adolescents' and children's health issues. CanWaCH's work is focused on the core pillars of: knowledge exchange, measuring results and stakeholder engagement. /Le projet appuie le Partenariat canadien pour la santé des femmes et des enfants (CanSFE), un réseau d'organisations non gouvernementales, de professionnels de la santé et de représentants du milieu universitaire du Canada qui travaillent sur les questions relatives à la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans les pays en développement. Le projet a pour objectif de : 1) améliorer l'échange de connaissances entre les organisations membres sur les pratiques exemplaires en matière de santé des femmes, des adolescents et des enfants à l'échelle mondiale, y compris sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive et les droits connexes; 2) accroître la contribution des partenaires et des experts techniques canadiens aux rapports sur la santé mondiale; 3) améliorer la mobilisation des intervenants, du secteur privé et du public du Canada sur les questions mondiales liées à la santé des femmes, des adolescents et des enfants. Les travaux du CanSFE reposent sur les piliers essentiels suivants : échange de connaissances, mesure des résultats et mobilisation des intervenants.

This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH. Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems. The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results. /Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. Le MFM finance des plans nationaux pour la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile, appuie des pays dans la transition vers un financement national durable de la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile, finance le renforcement des systèmes d'établissement des statistiques de l'état civil et d'enregistrement des faits d'état civil ainsi que l'élaboration et le déploiement de biens publics mondiaux, et contribue au financement coordonné de la santé génésique, maternelle, néonatale et infantile. Latin America is home to the g...reatest inequities in the world, including inequality in access to quality health services. Indigenous peoples have the poorest health in the region, due to such factors as geographic isolation, limited access to safe water, sanitation and food, and a poor understanding of, and sensitivity to, cultural beliefs and practices. Among the indicators of greatest concern is the high rate of maternal mortality. Indigenous women consistently experience higher maternal mortality rates than non-indigenous women in Latin America. Efforts to improve maternal health for indigenous women and adolescent girls must be based on a clear understanding of how to provide and measure high-quality care that ensures adequate health outcomes with dignity. This project examines quality of care from a cultural and a technical perspective in three indigenous communities in Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. Each of these three case studies will explore perceptions of quality care among indigenous women, and will involve collection and analysis of data using a customized framework for quality of care indicators. The study will examine the implementation of integrated health service delivery networks in all the three countries. These networks are designed to coordinate different health providers and services and each country is implementing them differently. The three case studies will examine how the networks positively or negatively influence quality of care processes and outcomes. Results from the individual case studies and from the project as a whole are expected to inform strategies for scaling up efforts to improve quality of maternal care for indigenous populations. Expected outputs include scientific publications in Spanish- and English-language journals, and information sharing via community groups, the local press and social media.

This project aims to improve m...aternal and neonatal health status of poor women, girls and boys. It provides technical assistance, equipment, and teaching and learning aids to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to improve the quality of education for nurse midwives and community skilled birth attendants. It also provides support to the Ministry to rationalize the rules for recruiting, posting, promoting and training nurse midwives. Project activities include: (1) training nursing teachers and supervisors in pedagogy and midwifery; (2)providing teaching and learning aids to public sector nursing institutes; (3) repairing nursing institutes; (4) strengthening the Bangladesh Nursing Council so it can enforce standards at nursing training institutes; (5) supporting the installation of a nursing management information system at the Directorate of Nursing Services; and (6) supporting training and supervision of community skilled birth attendants. The project works with the Directorate of Nursing Services, the Bangladesh Nursing Council and the Human Resource Development Unit of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé néonatale et maternelle chez les femmes, les filles et les garçons pauvres. Il permet de fournir une assistance technique, de l'équipement et du matériel d'enseignement et d'apprentissage au ministère de la Santé et du Bien-être familial afin d'améliorer la qualité de l'éducation destinée aux infirmières sages-femmes et les préposées aux naissances qualifiées au sein des collectivités. Il permet également d'aider le ministère à simplifier les règles régissant le recrutement, le déploiement, la promotion et la formation d'infirmières sages-femmes. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) former des enseignants en soins infirmiers et des superviseurs à la pédagogie et à la profession de sage-femme; 2) fournir du matériel d'enseignement et d'apprentissage aux instituts de soins infirmiers du secteur public; 3) la remise en état de ces instituts; 4) le renforcement des capacités du Conseil des soins infirmiers du Bangladesh à faire respecter les normes au sein des instituts de soins infirmiers; 5) le soutien à la mise en place d'un système d'information sur la gestion des soins infirmiers à la Direction des services de soins infirmiers; 6) le soutien à la formation et à la supervision des préposées aux naissances qualifiées au sein des collectivités. The project works in these five countries to improve the quality, availability and utilization of essential maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The project also works to strengthen the Canadian public's understanding of the reasons behind Canada's global investments in MNCH and SRH. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care-seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, and providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; and (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government on health resources and planning of services. Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), as well as with Plan International offices in the project's five targeted countries, local governments, and local NGOs. /Ce projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile chez les femmes et les enfants vulnérables, y compris les adolescentes, dans des régions reculées mal desservies du Bangladesh, du Ghana, d'Haïti, du Nigeria et du Sénégal. This joint initiative, UNICEF-...UNFPA, aims to reduce deaths of girls, women and infants by promoting and improving sexual and reproductive health services and rights and access to related information services. It particularly focuses on increasing effective coverage of key sexual and reproductive health services and rights including maternal newborn child health services in low performing districts. It addresses gaps and weakness of local government service delivery capacity, geography and culture to reduce preventable deaths amongst women and infants. The overall goal of the initiative is to contribute and accelerate the existing efforts of the government of Bangladesh in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights of the population, especially among women and adolescents, including efforts to improve maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health. /Cette initiative conjointe, UNICEF et FNUAP, vise à réduire les décès de filles, de femmes et de nourrissons en promouvant et en améliorant les services et les droits en matière de santé sexuelle et génésique ainsi que l'accès aux services d'information connexes. Il se concentre en particulier sur l'augmentation de la couverture efficace des services et des droits en matière de santé sexuelle et génésique, y compris les services de santé de la mère et du nouveau-né dans les districts à faible rendement. This project contributes to re...ducing maternal and child mortality rates and promoting gender equality through the provision of sexual and reproductive health and rights services. It particularly benefits over 14 million women, adolescents and children in two regions, Sylhet and Chittagong, including Cox's Bazar district, where unmet needs are most significant. It also supports fiduciary oversight and accountability of the government's health program, and strengthens financial and procurement management and efficiency of delivery systems. Project activities include: (1) providing maternal health care services, post-partum family planning and emergency obstetric care; (2) provide immunization for children and nutrition for infants and mothers; (3) provide services relateed to school based adolescent health and nutrition, family planning and sexual and reproductive health; and (4) budget planning, asset and procurement management. /Ce projet contribue à réduire les taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile ainsi qu'à promouvoir l'égalité des sexes par la prestation de services de santé et de droits sexuels et génésiques. Il profite particulièrement à plus de 14 millions de femmes, d'adolescents et d'enfants dans deux régions, Sylhet et Chittagong, y compris le district Cox's Bazar, où les besoins non comblés sont les plus importants. This project aims to reduce ch...ild, early and forced marriage in the Bhola and Jhalokati districts of Bangladesh. It also aims to reduce the vulnerability and poverty of adolescents in these two districts with a focus on reducing the proportion of girls under 18 years of age that are married. Bangladesh has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world. Approximately 52% of girls in Bangladesh are married by their 18th birthday, and 18% by the age of 15. Bhola and Jhalokati districts are among the poorest districts in Bangladesh and have the highest rates of child marriage in the country. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness and engaging adolescents, especially girls, in life skills education such as financial literacy and vocational abilities; (2) mobilizing community stakeholders by encouraging open, inclusive and informed discussions on the harmful impact of child marriage; and (3) strengthening existing child protection mechanisms. /Ce projet vise à réduire les mariages d'enfants, précoces et forcés dans les districts de Bhola et de Jhalokati au Bangladesh. The influx of more than 700,00...0 Rohingya from Myanmar into Bangladesh since August 2017 has increased the total displaced Rohingya population to approximately 1 million people in the Cox's Bazar District of Bangladesh. This population, including large numbers of women, children and other vulnerable groups, has significant needs for health, nutrition and population and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, and is placing an immense strain on an already under-resourced service delivery system. There is also a significant need for education and life skills learning support for the approximately 300,000 Rohingya children and adolescents, as well as needs for teacher training, psycho-social activities to deal with shock and trauma and awareness raising among Rohingya children, adolescents and their families on issues such as child rights, gender violence and personal safety. The sudden influx of Rohingya has also posed an unprecedented burden on the host communities (approximately 1.3 million people) which were already among the poorest in Bangladesh. This project supports the Government of Bangladesh's efforts to address the health, nutrition and basic education needs of the displaced Rohingya population in Cox's Bazar. Through an innovative financing mechanism, for every dollar contributed by Canada, the World Bank is providing five additional grant dollars in support of health and basic education services for the Rohingya. The project has two components: (1) a health component, which enables the displaced Rohingya, particularly women and girls, to access maternal, neonatal, infant, child and adolescent health and nutrition services, as well as reproductive health care and family planning support; and (2) a basic education component, which provides Rohingya children and adolescents access to basic education in a safe environment; and psycho-social services aimed at helping Rohingya children recover from shocks and prevent exploitation, with a focus on girls who are often victims of gender-based violence. By enhancing the Government of Bangladesh's service delivery systems in Cox's Bazar, the project also benefits the affected host communities. /L'afflux de plus de 700 000 Rohingyas du Myanmar au Bangladesh depuis août 2017 a porté le nombre total de Rohingyas déplacés à environ 1 million de personnes dans le district de Cox's Bazar au Bangladesh. The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives and health professionals to increase their skills; (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies; and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives. Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country. /Le projet vise à améliorer les services de santé reproductive, maternelle, néonatale et infantile fournis par les sages-femmes dans ses quatre pays cibles, à savoir le Bénin, la République démocratique du Congo (RDC), l'Éthiopie et la Tanzanie. This project aims to improve t...he economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, especially women and girls, in developing countries, with a view to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the support of 1,100 volunteer placements, it increases the participation of Canadians in international development and global issues and enhances the performance of 136 developing country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that promote gender equality. Partners include feminist organizations promoting women's economic empowerment, women's rights and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence; national volunteer organizations promoting the social inclusion of marginalized groups in development efforts and the empowerment of women and girls ; youth associations that promote human rights, political participation of young women and marginalized groups as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young women and girls; key professional associations that promote economic empowerment, rights and leadership of young women; and key climate change organizations that promote women's participation, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures and sustainable management of natural resources. Project activities include : (1) recruiting and training volunteers with a focus on gender equality; (2) providing technical assistance to partners in developing countries to strengthen knowledge, policies and processes to integrate a human rights-based and transformative approach to gender equality; (3) providing technical assistance to partners in developing countries to strengthen local, national and international coordination mechanisms, platforms, networks and alliances to advance gender equality agendas; (4) implementing a public engagement and knowledge-sharing strategy to engage Canadians and organizations on international development and gender equality issues, lessons learned and good practices; (5) establishing thematic funds to support sub-projects to maximize the impact and sustainability of technical assistance provided by volunteers; and (6) organizing multi-stakeholder meetings on policy and programming and support the development of knowledge and learning products. /Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être économique et social des personnes les plus pauvres, les plus marginalisées et les plus vulnérables, en particulier les femmes et les filles, dans les pays en développement, en vue de contribuer aux objectifs de développement durable. The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE); (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR; (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models; and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé sexuelle et reproductive sous tous ses aspects, y compris des avortements sûrs et légaux et des soins après un avortement pour les jeunes femmes, particulièrement les adolescentes, ainsi qu'à assurer le respect des droits sexuels et reproductifs dans des districts ciblés de la Bolivie, de l'Équateur, du Guyana et du Pérou. In Mali and Burkina Faso, mate...rnal and child mortality rates remain high. The governments of both countries are trying to increase access to and use of health care for women and children. They have adopted policies to remove financial barriers and are now piloting results-based financing, which gives financial incentives to providers of health services for achieving predefined indicators. Despite these efforts, health inequalities persist. This project will contribute to increasing equitable access to health services for the poor by strengthening the implementation of health reforms in Mali and Burkina Faso. It examines the emergence, relevance, design, and development of results-based financing in both countries, and studies its implementation, sustainability, and efficacy. The project will also look at the impact of results-based financing on health providers' motivation and teamwork, local leadership, community management committees of health facilities, access to and use of health services, and financial protection of vulnerable populations. It will document any unexpected outcomes.The project will result in a number of scientific publications from established and young researchers. In addition, the results of the study will be disseminated to decision-makers across Africa and to international agencies involved in the design and scale-up of results-based financing for maternal and child health.This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) Initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

The second phase of this initi...ative aims to contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality in the health districts of Bogandé and Manni (eastern region), Yako and Gourcy (northern region) and Koudougou, Réo, Tenado and Sabou (Central West Region) in Burkina Faso. The maternal mortality rate (341 per 100,000) and infant and juvenile deaths are high. The likelihood of a child dying before reaching the fifth birthday is one in eight according to the 2010 demographic survey. In addition, the healthcare system faces significant institutional challenges, such as stock-outs or insufficient qualified staff, which have a significant impact on the quality of care provided and, consequently, the desire of communities to use the services. Project activities include: (1) identification of training needs and training on hygiene and sanitation, prenatal and postnatal care, safe delivery practices, patient psychology, screening, follow-up and reference of malnourished children, follow-up and accompaniment of pregnant women and adolescents; (2) the equipment of health and social promotion centers; 3) sensitization of opinion leaders, political and administrative authorities and communities on the health of mothers, newborns and children. The project is being implemented by a consortium of the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), Université Laval and Farm Radio International to help improve maternal, newborn and child health. Local partners are: Association solidarité Entraide mutuelle au Sahel, Conseil Burkinabè des ONG et Associations de lutte contre les IST et le VIH/sida, and Centre d'Information, de Conseils et de Documentation sur le Sida et la Tuberculose (CICDoc) /Ce projet, qui est une phase II, vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile dans les districts sanitaires de Bogandé et Manni (région de l'Est), Yako et Gourcy (région du Nord) et Koudougou, Réo, Tenado et Sabou (région du Centre-Ouest) au Burkina Faso. Le taux de mortalité maternelle (341 sur 100,000) et les décès infanto-juvéniles y sont élevés. La probabilité pour un enfant de décéder avant d'atteindre son cinquième anniversaire est d'un sur huit selon l'enquête démographique de 2010. The project aims to reduce the... prevalence of child early and forced marriage (CEFM) in Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone. It works to reduce CEFM by enabling girls to decide their own futures and fulfill their equal human rights. Project activities include: (1) establishing/refurbishing physical safe spaces in existing community structures and equipping them with age-appropriate materials; (2) identifying female and male gender equality (GE) community champions using a participatory approach; and (3) conducting dialogue workshops between trained Civil Society organizations (CSOs) and government officials to understand the issues and challenges in addressing CEFM. It is expected the project reaches over 25,900 direct beneficiaries (11,400 girls, 6,700 boys, 3,800 women, 4,000 men) in the Western Area Rural and the Kailahun Districts of Sierra Leone, and the Cascades and Hauts-Bassins regions of Burkina Faso. Key groups include girls, boys, women, men, traditional and religious leaders, women- and girl-led community groups, Civil Society organizations, service providers, sub-national, national, and regional government stakeholders. /Le projet vise à réduire la prévalence de mariages d'enfants, précoces et forcés au Burkina Faso et en Sierra Leone. Il vise à réduire le nombre de mariages précoces et forcés (MEPF) en permettant aux filles de décider de leur avenir et d'exercer leurs droits humains. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) établir et/ou renover les espaces sécuritaires dans les immeubles communautaires préexistants et les équiper de matériels conçus pour les adolescents; 2) identifier des champions féminins et masculins en égalité des genres au sein des communautés en utilisant un modèle participatif; 3) la conduite d'ateliers de dialogue entre les organisations de la société civile formées et les fonctionnaires du gouvernement pour comprendre les problèmes et les défis liés à la prise en compte du MEFC. LIl est prévu que le projet touche plus de 25 900 bénéficiaires directs (11 400 filles, 6 700 garçons, 3 800 femmes, 4 000 hommes) dans la zone rurale occidentale et les districts de Kailahun en Sierra Leone, et dans les régions des Cascades et des Hauts-Bassins au Burkina Faso. Les principaux groupes sont les filles, les garçons, les femmes, les hommes, les chefs traditionnels et religieux, les groupes communautaires dirigés par des femmes et des filles, les organisations de la société civile, les prestataires de services, les acteurs gouvernementaux infranationaux, nationaux et régionaux.

This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities; (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries; (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery; (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities; (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food; and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania. /Le projet vise à réduire les maladies et la mortalité chez les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé (hommes et femmes) et des accoucheuses traditionnelles pour qu'ils puissent donner des conseils éclairés sur les soins prénataux et postnataux, promouvoir des habitudes saines, offrir des soins de santé de base, repérer les grossesses à haut risque et orienter les patientes vers les établissements de santé gouvernementaux; 2) approvisionnement d'un certain nombre de centres de santé en équipement essentiel à la réduction des infections, à la surveillance des signes vitaux des fœtus et à la facilitation des accouchements de nuit; 3) construction de dispensaires et de résidences pour les infirmières et les femmes enceintes afin de favoriser l'accouchement dans un établissement; 4) création de moyens de transport rapides et abordables vers les établissements de santé; 5) amélioration de l'accès à l'eau potable et aux aliments nutritifs; 6) mobilisation et outillage des communautés et des dirigeants des villages pour leur permettre d'obtenir des résultats durables en matière de SMNE et d'égalité entre les sexes. This project aims to reduce th...e mortality rate among mothers and children in Burundi based on the achievements of a previous project on maternal, newborn and child, supported by Canada. The project uses former beneficiaries of the project 'Integrated Prevention of HIV Transmission From Mother to Child (PMTCT) in Burundi', to lead community outreach on the prevention of HIV from mother to child during the perinatal period (shortly before or after birth). This approach, in addition to the availability of new services at the health center, contributes to increased utilization of essential health services. The project also seeks to improve the delivery of essential health services for these clients by strengthening the abilities of health center staff. Project activities include: (1) the design and management of a new maternal and child health program; (2) the development and transmission of a participatory training program for community ambassadors to develop populations' awareness; (3) the registration of pregnant women to services and their monitoring; (4) the recruitment of Canadian experts for the training of local teams; and (5) the development of L'AMIE's presence in social media in order to increase the visibility of the organization's public awareness activities. It is expected that this project directly contributes to improving the health of approximately 64,000 people, including 50,000 children, and indirectly benefits more than 415,000 people. This project is implemented by a consortium led by L'AMIE with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), and in collaboration with the following local partner: Association pour la prise en charge des orphelins du Sida (APECOS). /Ce projet vise à réduire le taux de mortalité chez les mères et les enfants au Burundi en se fondant sur les acquis d'un projet précédent sur la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile, appuyé par le Canada. Le projet fait appel à des ambassadeurs, des anciens bénéficiaires du projet « Prévention intégrée de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant (PTME) au Burundi », qui effectuent un travail de sensibilisation de la communauté à la prévention de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant en périnatalité (la période peu avant et suivant la naissance). Cette approche, ensemble avec la disponibilité de nouveaux services au centre de santé, permet d'augmenter le taux d'utilisation des services essentiels de santé. The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI). /Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques au Cambodge, en Birmanie, aux Philippines et au Rwanda. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés des deux sexes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. This project is part of Global... Affairs Canada's International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Indigenous youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC), in consortium with the Northern Council for Global Cooperation, the Mi'kmaw Conservation Group, BYTE - Empowering Youth Society and the Native Council of Prince Edward Island, sends 100 Indigenous youth interns to six different countries. The project supports the work of local partner organizations to improve the well-being of Indigenous peoples; secure the future of children and youth; improve maternal and newborn health; increase food security; advance democracy; and stimulate sustainable growth. /Ce projet fait partie de l'initiative de Stages internationaux pour les jeunes Autochtones (SIJA) d'Affaires mondiales Canada. Ces stages visent à accroître la sensibilisation, l'engagement et la participation des jeunes Autochtones à l'égard du développement international, tout en leur donnant la chance d'élargir leurs compétences professionnelles. This initiative supports the m...aternal and child health centre of Oliga, which contributes to reducing mortality rates among mothers and infants in the health district of Cité Verte (Yaoundé II) by increasing the medical coverage of this district, one of the poorest in the central region of Cameroon. Activities include: (1) building and operating the maternal and child health centre in Yaoundé; (2) purchase and installation of the centre's equipment; (3) recruiting and continuous training of staff; and (4) implementing health outreach and information activities for beneficiaries while liaising with existing maternal and child health programs and institutions in Cameroon. About 25,000 patients are expected to receive health services annually (15,500 women, 6,500 children and 3,000 men) at Oliga's maternal and child health centre. Indirect beneficiaries are estimated at 350,000 people. Afrique Future Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the local partner Afrique Future Cameroun. /Cette initiative appuie le Centre de santé mères et enfants d'Oliga qui vise à contribuer à la réduction des taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile dans le District de santé de la Cité Verte (Yaoundé II) en augmentant la couverture médicale dans ce district qui est considéré comme le plus défavorisé de la Région Centre du Cameroun. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) la construction et l'opération d'un centre de santé mères et enfants à Yaoundé; 2) l'achat et l'installation de l'équipement du centre; 3) le recrutement, la formation initiale et continue du personnel, et sa rémunération durant les deux dernières années; 4) la mise sur pied d'activités de sensibilisation et d'information à la santé auprès des bénéficiaires, ainsi que des activités de liaison avec les programmes et institutions existants en matière de santé maternelle et infantile au Cameroun. Annuellement, on s'attend à ce que environ 25 000 patients reçoivent des services de santé (15 500 femmes, 6 500 enfants et 3 000 hommes) dans le centre de santé mères et enfants d'Oliga. Le nombre de bénéficiaires indirects est estimé à 350 000. Afrique Future Canada met en œuvre ce projet en collaboration avec le partenaire local Afrique Future Cameroun.

This project aims to improve t...he economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, especially women and girls, in developing countries, with a view to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the support of 1,100 volunteer placements, it increases the participation of Canadians in international development and global issues and enhances the performance of 136 developing country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that promote gender equality. Partners include feminist organizations promoting women's economic empowerment, women's rights and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence; national volunteer organizations promoting the social inclusion of marginalized groups in development efforts and the empowerment of women and girls ; youth associations that promote human rights, political participation of young women and marginalized groups as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young women and girls; key professional associations that promote economic empowerment, rights and leadership of young women; and key climate change organizations that promote women's participation, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures and sustainable management of natural resources. Project activities include : (1) recruiting and training volunteers with a focus on gender equality; (2) providing technical assistance to partners in developing countries to strengthen knowledge, policies and processes to integrate a human rights-based and transformative approach to gender equality; (3) providing technical assistance to partners in developing countries to strengthen local, national and international coordination mechanisms, platforms, networks and alliances to advance gender equality agendas; (4) implementing a public engagement and knowledge-sharing strategy to engage Canadians and organizations on international development and gender equality issues, lessons learned and good practices; (5) establishing thematic funds to support sub-projects to maximize the impact and sustainability of technical assistance provided by volunteers; and (6) organizing multi-stakeholder meetings on policy and programming and support the development of knowledge and learning products. /Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être économique et social des personnes les plus pauvres, les plus marginalisées et les plus vulnérables, en particulier les femmes et les filles, dans les pays en développement, en vue de contribuer aux objectifs de développement durable. The purpose is to provide high quality program analysis, project delivery services and administrative/logistical services to CIDA's Eastern Caribbean and Caribbean Regional Programs. The project permits the Canadian High Commission in Barbados to establish a number of standing offer contracts with regional specialists. These contracts are drawn upon on an as needed basis. /Le projet vise à améliorer l'efficacité et l'efficience de l'exécution des programmes d'aide au développement de l'ACDI dans les Caraïbes orientales et dans les Caraïbes en général. Il consiste à offrir des services d'analyse de programmes, d'exécution de projets et d'administration/de logistique de grande qualité au programme de l'ACDI visant les Caraïbes orientales et au programme régional en faveur des Caraïbes. Le projet permet au haut-commissariat du Canada à la Barbade de conclure un certain nombre d'offres à commandes avec des spécialistes de la région. On fait appel à ces offres au besoin.

This project is part of Global... Affairs Canada's International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Indigenous youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC), in consortium with the Northern Council for Global Cooperation, the Mi'kmaw Conservation Group, BYTE - Empowering Youth Society and the Native Council of Prince Edward Island, sends 100 Indigenous youth interns to six different countries. The project supports the work of local partner organizations to improve the well-being of Indigenous peoples; secure the future of children and youth; improve maternal and newborn health; increase food security; advance democracy; and stimulate sustainable growth. /Ce projet fait partie de l'initiative de Stages internationaux pour les jeunes Autochtones (SIJA) d'Affaires mondiales Canada. Ces stages visent à accroître la sensibilisation, l'engagement et la participation des jeunes Autochtones à l'égard du développement international, tout en leur donnant la chance d'élargir leurs compétences professionnelles. An approach to improve adolescents' knowledge, attitudes, skills, and practices for better protection against early pregnancy will be developed and tested. Recommendations will be made to the various stakeholders involved in preventing early pregnancy.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for women and adolescent girls in Francophone West Africa, with a particular focus on Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Niger. The project seeks to increase demand for and use of sexual and reproductive health services by increasing knowledge of SRHR among women and adolescent girls and by reducing gender-related barriers to seeking these services by working with men, boys and cultural leaders in addition to women and adolescent girls. The project also expands access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion and post-abortion care. In addition, the project develops and implements a regional strategy to contribute to improved SRHR for women and adolescent girls. Project activities include: (1) training 520 health care workers to provide quality and youth-friendly health services; (2) establishing and deploying eight mobile health units; and (3) conducting events and outreach activities on SRHR, including contraception. An estimated 319,573 women and adolescent girls are expected to benefit from services and outreach activities, and 115,679 women and adolescent girls are expected to be provided with modern contraception. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs des femmes et des adolescentes en Afrique de l'Ouest francophone, en particulier en Côte d'Ivoire, au Mali et au Niger. Le projet vise à accroître la demande de services de santé sexuelle et reproductive et leur utilisation en faisant mieux connaître la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR) aux femmes et aux adolescentes et en réduisant les obstacles liés au genre en ce qui a trait à la recherche de ces services en travaillant auprès d'hommes, de garçons et de chefs de file culturels en plus des femmes et des adolescentes. Le projet élargit également l'accès à des services de santé sexuelle et reproductive de qualité, dont des avortements sécuritaires et des soins après l'avortement. En outre, dans le cadre du projet, on élabore et met en œuvre une stratégie régionale qui contribue à améliorer la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs des femmes et des adolescentes. Parmi les activités de projet, mentionnons les suivantes : (1) formation de 520 travailleurs du domaine de la santé pour fournir des services de santé de qualité et adaptés aux jeunes; (2) établir et déployer huit unités de santé mobiles; et (3) mener des événements et activités de sensibilisation sur la SDSR, dont la contraception. On estime que 319 573 femmes et adolescentes bénéficieront des services et des activités de sensibilisation, et 115 679 femmes et adolescentes devraient recevoir des moyens de contraception modernes.

This project aims to improve s...exual and reproductive health, and promote and protect the related rights of women and girls, including those living with disabilities, in Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Togo. Project activities include: (1) increasing the capacity of communities to promote gender-friendly behaviour and social norms related to the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and adolescent girls; (2) training health personnel on SRHR services for women and adolescent girls, including long-term contraceptive methods; and (3) increasing the capacity of civil society and elected local government officials to advocate on SRHR services for women and adolescent girls. The project aims to raise awareness on SRHR services amongst 15,000 women, girls, men, boys and community leaders. The project also provides comprehensive sexuality and SRHR education program for 12,000 girls, boys and adolescents, and trains 116 community mobilizers. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé sexuelle et reproductive, et à promouvoir et protéger les droits connexes des femmes et des filles, y compris celles qui vivent avec un handicap, en Côte d'Ivoire, au Sénégal et au Togo. Les activités du projet comprennent : (1) le renforcement de la capacité des communautés à promouvoir des comportements et des normes sociales favorables aux femmes et aux adolescentes en matière de santé et des droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR); (2) la formation du personnel de santé aux services relatifs à la SDSR pour les femmes et les adolescentes, y compris les méthodes de contraception à long terme; (3) le renforcement de la capacité de la société civile et des élus locaux à plaider en faveur des services relatifs à la SDSR pour les femmes et les adolescentes. Le projet vise à sensibiliser 15 000 femmes, filles, hommes, garçons et dirigeants communautaires aux services relatifs à la SDSR. The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives and health professionals to increase their skills; (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies; and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives. Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country. /Le projet vise à améliorer les services de santé reproductive, maternelle, néonatale et infantile fournis par les sages-femmes dans ses quatre pays cibles, à savoir le Bénin, la République démocratique du Congo (RDC), l'Éthiopie et la Tanzanie. Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) la formation des sages-femmes et des professionnels de la santé pour améliorer leurs compétences; 2) l'éducation des communautés sur les dangers des soins de santé de moindre qualité pour les mères et les bébés; 3) éliminer les obstacles entre les sexes qui empêchent les femmes enceintes d'accéder à des soins de santé appropriés et en temps opportun. Le projet se fonde sur le modèle canadien unique qui soutient les sages-femmes à travailler de façon autonome et dans les régions éloignées. Il est mis en œuvre par un consortium dirigé par CUSO international avec l'Association canadienne des sages-femmes. The project aims to improve th...e well-being of children and youth aged 6 to 22 and protect them against violations of their rights, abuse and sexual and economic exploitation, in and around 20 mining sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It seeks to support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, reinforce everyday life skills, provide comprehensive sexual education and enable the socio-economic reintegration of children and youth in the provinces of Upper Katanga, Lualaba and South Kivu. Project activities include: (1) establishing partnerships for the protection of children between mining companies, local authorities and communities; (2) strengthening health services in mining communities; and (3) developing the skills and capacities of community leaders and groups to negotiate protective measures for children and monitor their implementation. In addition, advisory committees and socio-economic and recreational activities enable children to participate actively in the prevention of violence, economic exploitation and sexual abuse. /Le projet vise à améliorer le bien-être des enfants et des jeunes âgés de 6 à 22 ans, et de les protéger contre les abus de leurs droits, la maltraitance, l'exploitation sexuelle et économique, dans et autour de 20 sites miniers en République démocratique du Congo (RDC). Il cherche à prendre en charge les survivants de violences sexuelles et sexistes et à renforcer les compétences de la vie courante, fournir une éducation sexuelle complète et permettre la réinsertion socio-économique des enfants et des jeunes provenant des provinces du Haut Katanga, de Lualaba et du Sud Kivu. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) l'établissement de partenariats pour la protection des enfants entre les compagnies minières, les autorités locales ainsi que les communautés; 2) le renforcement des services de santé dans les communautés minières; 3) le développement des compétences et des capacités des dirigeants et groupes communautaires de négocier des mesures de protections pour les enfants et surveiller leur mise en œuvre. The project aims to offer grea...ter availability and use of primary health care services, including sexual and reproductive health (SRH), such as maternal and newborn care, of women and girls in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The project also contributes to strengthening management of health centres and access to SRH services by women and girls, including family planning, contraceptive methods and post-abortion care. Project activities include: (1) providing ongoing training to health care providers, taking into account the specific needs of women and girls; (2) purchasing medical and non-medical equipment; (3) strengthening the system for procuring medicines; and (4) supporting health care personnel in order to increase their capacity to promote best practices and raise community awareness in order to promote the health and rights of women and girls. /Le projet vise à offrir une meilleure disponibilité et utilisation des services de santé primaire, dont la santé sexuelle et reproductive (SSR) des femmes et des jeunes filles, y compris les soins aux mères et aux nouveau-nés à Kinshasa en République démocratique du Congo (RDC). Le projet contribue aussi à renforcer la gestion des centres de santé et l'accès à des services de SSR des femmes et des jeunes filles, incluant la planification familiale, les méthodes contraceptives et les soins post-avortement. The project aims to meet the n...eeds of pre-adolescents and adolescents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with respect to comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services that are gender-specific and adapted to their reality. To do so, the network of school and local community organizations has become involved to maximize awareness and engagement of key players. The project focuses on promoting and supporting positive and healthy social norms in order to encourage respectful, equitable and sustainable behaviours. Project activities include: (1) developing educational and promotional materials on positive norms of gender equality and sexual and reproductive health services and rights that take into account the adolescents' age and gender; (2) setting up school clubs for adolescents attending school and community space for youth; (3) adapting and improving the quality of SRH services in health centres to meet the needs of adolescents; and (4) establishing and strengthening child and youth protection committees comprised of community members. /Le projet vise à répondre aux besoins des préadolescents et des adolescents, filles et garçons, en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) en matière d'éducation complète à la sexualité et des services de santé sexuelle et reproductive (SSR) adaptés à leur réalité et sensibles au genre. Pour ce faire, le réseau d'organisations communautaires locales et scolaires est impliqué afin de maximiser la sensibilisation et la mobilisation des acteurs clés. Ce projet se concentre sur la promotion et le soutien de normes sociales positives et saines afin d'encourager des comportements respectueux, équitables et durables. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) l'élaboration de matériel éducatif et promotionnel sur les normes positives de l'égalité des genres, de la SSR et les droits connexes, qui tient compte de l'âge et du genre des adolescents (filles et garçons); 2) mise en place de clubs scolaires pour les adolescents (filles et garçons) scolarisés ainsi que d'espaces communautaires pour les jeunes; 3) l'adaptation et l'amélioration de la qualité des services en SSR dans les centres de santé afin de répondre aux besoins des adolescent(e)s; 4) l'établissement et le renforcement de comités de protection des enfants et des jeunes composés de membres de la communauté.

The project aims to prevent an...d respond to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) - such as sexual harassment, intimidation, early marriage and rape - as well as to unhealthy practices. It aims to improve the holistic management of survivors through multisectoral integrated service centres (MISC). The MISCs would make medical, psychosocial, legal and socioeconomic reintegration or school re-entry services available to girls and young women who are survivors of SGBV. Not only does the project contribute to SGBV prevention and to promote the rights of girls and women through a national campaign for change in social behaviours, but it also promotes a communication and engagement strategy for men and boys to change their behaviours and perceptions on sexual and gender-based violence. Project activities include: (1) community outreach and youth engagement; (2) strengthening community-based protection networks; (3) establishing the MISCs; (4) strengthening the capacity of lawyers and legal defenders; (5) developing initiatives that encourage female entrepreneurship and the socioeconomic reintegration of survivors or re-entry of underage victims into the school system; and (6) strengthening national coordination in the fight against SGBV. /Le projet vise à prévenir et à répondre aux violences sexuelles et basées sur le genre (VSBG) - telles que le harcèlement sexuel, l'intimidation, le mariage précoce, le viol - et les pratiques malsaines. Il vise l'amélioration de la prise en charge holistique des survivantes via les centres de services intégrés multisectoriels (CSIM). Ces derniers permettent d'offrir des services médicaux, psychosociaux, juridiques et de réinsertion socioéconomique ou scolaire aux filles et aux jeunes femmes survivantes de VSBG. Non seulement, le projet contribue à la prévention des VSBG et à la promotion des droits des filles et des femmes à travers une campagne nationale de changement des comportements sociaux, mais une stratégie de communication et d'engagement des hommes et des garçons pour les changements de comportement et de perception à l'égard de la violence sexuelle et sexiste est aussi mis de l'avant. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) la sensibilisation auprès des communautés et la mobilisation des jeunes; 2) le renforcement des réseaux de protection communautaire; 3) la mise en place des CSIM; 4) le renforcement des capacités des avocats et défenseurs judiciaires; 5) le développement d'initiatives en faveur de l'entrepreneuriat féminin et la réintégration socio-économique des survivantes ou de la réintégration scolaire des victimes mineures; 6) le renforcement de la coordination nationale de la lutte contre les VSBG.

This project aims to improve t...he economic and social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, especially women and girls, in developing countries, with a view to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the support of 1,100 volunteer placements, it increases the participation of Canadians in international development and global issues and enhances the performance of 136 developing country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that promote gender equality. Partners include feminist organizations promoting women's economic empowerment, women's rights and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence; national volunteer organizations promoting the social inclusion of marginalized groups in development efforts and the empowerment of women and girls ; youth associations that promote human rights, political participation of young women and marginalized groups as well as the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young women and girls; key professional associations that promote economic empowerment, rights and leadership of young women; and key climate change organizations that promote women's participation, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures and sustainable management of natural resources. Project activities include : (1) recruiting and training volunteers with a focus on gender equality; (2) providing technical assistance to partners in developing countries to strengthen knowledge, policies and processes to integrate a human rights-based and transformative approach to gender equality; (3) providing technical assistance to partners in developing countries to strengthen local, national and international coordination mechanisms, platforms, networks and alliances to advance gender equality agendas; (4) implementing a public engagement and knowledge-sharing strategy to engage Canadians and organizations on international development and gender equality issues, lessons learned and good practices; (5) establishing thematic funds to support sub-projects to maximize the impact and sustainability of technical assistance provided by volunteers; and (6) organizing multi-stakeholder meetings on policy and programming and support the development of knowledge and learning products. /Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être économique et social des personnes les plus pauvres, les plus marginalisées et les plus vulnérables, en particulier les femmes et les filles, dans les pays en développement, en vue de contribuer aux objectifs de développement durable. This project will help the Inn...ovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) program establish a communications and evaluation fund. It will also support the program in carrying out strategic, bilingual communications and knowledge translation activities, as well as monitor and evaluate its work. Improving maternal and child health IMCHA will improve maternal, newborn, and child health by using primary health care as an entry point to strengthen health systems, ensuring they are more equitable. The program is supporting 20 implementation research teams. The teams will generate new knowledge about how interventions work, for whom, and under what conditions, to ensure that mothers and their children have better access to the care they need. To promote the uptake of research findings so that they influence national and regional policies and practices, IMCHA is supporting two health policy and research organizations. These organizations are working closely with the implementation research teams. Communicating innovation and results This project establishes a communications and evaluation fund for the program. It will help facilitate administration of a budget line in the IMCHA program budget that was established and approved by its three funders: IDRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, for the program's duration (2014-2020). The funds will allow IMCHA to communicate its approach and results, while helping to ensure that they are clearly understood and adopted by target audiences. The communications activities are listed in the IMCHA Communication Plan. The project will also allow the program to prepare for the IMCHA evaluations, and finance the mid-term and final evaluations. The project, Access to Quality... Care Through Extending and Strengthening Health Systems (AQCESS), aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children (MNCH) of communities and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan. In these regions some MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality, are particularly poor, with women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. Project activities include: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI). /Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques au Cambodge, en Birmanie, aux Philippines et au Rwanda. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés des deux sexes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. This project aims to contribut...e to the reduction of maternal and child mortality amongst vulnerable women and children, including adolescent girls, in targeted underserved remote areas of Bangladesh, Ghana, Haiti, Nigeria and Senegal. The project works in these five countries to improve the quality, availability and utilization of essential maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The project also works to strengthen the Canadian public's understanding of the reasons behind Canada's global investments in MNCH and SRH. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care-seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, and providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; and (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government on health resources and planning of services. Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), as well as with Plan International offices in the project's five targeted countries, local governments, and local NGOs. /Ce projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile chez les femmes et les enfants vulnérables, y compris les adolescentes, dans des régions reculées mal desservies du Bangladesh, du Ghana, d'Haïti, du Nigeria et du Sénégal. This project aims to reduce th...e mortality rate among mothers and children in Burundi based on the achievements of a previous project on maternal, newborn and child, supported by Canada. The project uses former beneficiaries of the project 'Integrated Prevention of HIV Transmission From Mother to Child (PMTCT) in Burundi', to lead community outreach on the prevention of HIV from mother to child during the perinatal period (shortly before or after birth). This approach, in addition to the availability of new services at the health center, contributes to increased utilization of essential health services. The project also seeks to improve the delivery of essential health services for these clients by strengthening the abilities of health center staff. Project activities include: (1) the design and management of a new maternal and child health program; (2) the development and transmission of a participatory training program for community ambassadors to develop populations' awareness; (3) the registration of pregnant women to services and their monitoring; (4) the recruitment of Canadian experts for the training of local teams; and (5) the development of L'AMIE's presence in social media in order to increase the visibility of the organization's public awareness activities. It is expected that this project directly contributes to improving the health of approximately 64,000 people, including 50,000 children, and indirectly benefits more than 415,000 people. This project is implemented by a consortium led by L'AMIE with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), and in collaboration with the following local partner: Association pour la prise en charge des orphelins du Sida (APECOS). /Ce projet vise à réduire le taux de mortalité chez les mères et les enfants au Burundi en se fondant sur les acquis d'un projet précédent sur la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile, appuyé par le Canada. Le projet fait appel à des ambassadeurs, des anciens bénéficiaires du projet « Prévention intégrée de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant (PTME) au Burundi », qui effectuent un travail de sensibilisation de la communauté à la prévention de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant en périnatalité (la période peu avant et suivant la naissance). Cette approche, ensemble avec la disponibilité de nouveaux services au centre de santé, permet d'augmenter le taux d'utilisation des services essentiels de santé. The project aims to advance th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls, reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and support advocacy for SRHR in Sierra Leone and Malawi. For adolescent girls in Sierra Leone and Malawi, the rate of maternal mortality and SGBV is very high. The project provides support to SGBV survivors, including clinical services, legal services, and advocacy, in addition to conducting education sessions on SGBV prevention and referral. The project works to strengthen the capacity of healthcare practitioners to provide high quality, gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and rights-based SRHR services. Project activities include: (1) providing training for staff that is tailored to the specific health needs of adolescents; (2) creating safe spaces for adolescents to receive SRHR services in private; and (3) working with healthcare practitioners on national health objectives. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, healthcare institutions are better able to respond to the SRHR needs of women and girls, empowering them to live healthy lives and make informed choices around their health and rights. /Le projet vise à promouvoir la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR) des adolescentes, à réduire la violence sexuelle et fondée sur le genre et à soutenir le plaidoyer en faveur de la SDSR en Sierra Leone et au Malawi. Pour les adolescentes en Sierra Leone et au Malawi, le taux de mortalité maternelle et de violence sexuelle et sexiste est très élevé. Le projet offre un soutien aux survivants de la violence sexuelle et sexiste, y compris des services cliniques, des services juridiques et des services de défense des droits, en plus d'offrir des séances d'éducation sur la prévention et l'orientation en matière de violence sexuelle et fondée sur le genre. Le projet vise à renforcer la capacité des professionnels de la santé à fournir des services SDSR de haute qualité, sensibles au genre, adaptés aux jeunes et fondés sur les droits. The project seeks to improve c...omprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including safe and legal abortions and post-abortion care for young women, especially adolescent girls, and help ensure the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive rights in targeted districts of Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and training are central to this project which aims to provide young people, especially adolescent girls, with the information and tools required to protect themselves against sexual violence and unplanned pregnancies. Project activities include: (1) training for community facilitators, trainers and peer educators on raising awareness about SRHR among youth, and on providing comprehensive sexuality education (CSE); (2) strengthening youth and women's groups and local civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to promote SRHR; (3) providing affordable, comprehensive and youth-friendly SRH services through innovative cost-efficient and sustainable models; and (4) engaging community leaders, norm setters and men to address barriers that inhibit access to SRHR services. The project is expected to directly benefit 217,000 young women and young men between the ages of 10 and 24 (of which 63% are women), including highly vulnerable populations such as youth who are indigenous, migrants, Afro-descendant, and/or LGBT, as well as those from impoverished communities. The project also aims to build the capacity of over 2,200 educators, volunteers, health workers, leaders and activists. The project is expected to indirectly benefit a population of over 8 million in 14 targeted regions in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. The public engagement component is expected to reach approximately 20,000 Canadians and over 40 Canadian-based organizations. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé sexuelle et reproductive sous tous ses aspects, y compris des avortements sûrs et légaux et des soins après un avortement pour les jeunes femmes, particulièrement les adolescentes, ainsi qu'à assurer le respect des droits sexuels et reproductifs dans des districts ciblés de la Bolivie, de l'Équateur, du Guyana et du Pérou.
