Malawi has high rates of mater...nal mortality despite concerted efforts to increase the rate of births at health facilities. In response, the Ministry of Health implemented a Standards-Based Management and Recognition for Reproductive Health initiative to improve the quality of health services. Similar initiatives have proven successful in other countries. However, to date, only limited improvements have been observed in Malawi, and no improvements were noted in the quality of care during labour and delivery. This project will further assess the implementation of this initiative and its impact on the quality of maternal health care in Malawi. The researchers will look at the context on the ground and how it has impacted implementation. Their aim is to provide the Ministry of Health with information and recommendations to improve the quality of and access to care. A particular focus of the study will be on women's experiences of care.Researchers will produce knowledge in conjunction with key stakeholders, including the public and policymakers, to make recommendations for the implementation of the Standards-Based Management and Recognition for Reproductive Health initiative in Malawi. Research findings will be presented at strategic forums in the country as well as at conferences. The information will also be published in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, the study will promote knowledge and skills transfer between Canada and Malawi. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a seven-year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

This initiative aims to build ...local and facility-level capacity and accountability in order to reduce barriers that prevent pregnant women and mothers from utilizing sexual and reproductive health services in one province of Afghanistan and two regions in Malawi. The populations in both Afghanistan and Malawi face many challenges when it comes to accessing necessary medical care, particularly for pregnant women, and children. This has led to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Major factors that contribute to high mortality rates in both countries include long distances to health centres, a lack of skilled health professionals, and a lack of information regarding sexual and reproductive health. Project activities include: (1) improving the quality and supply of services at the facility level by improving the skills and approaches of health-care workers, as well as ensuring that the facilities and tools themselves are of standard quality and availability; (2) expanding demand for health services, and addressing gender gaps by increasing women's decision-making for their own and their children's health; and (3) increasing male support for women's decision making, increasing community participation in sexual and reproductive health, and changing behaviour that puts women and girls at risk. As a result, vulnerable groups will proactively seek and advocate for health services. This project targets 174,701 direct beneficiaries and 622,132 indirect beneficiaries. The Organization is implementing this project in collaboration with Community World Service Asia in Afghanistan, and in Malawi with Embangweni Mission Hospital (EMH) of Livingstonia Health Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterians (CCAP), and Mulanje Mission Hospital (MMH) of the CCAP Synod of Blantyre /Le projet vise à développer la responsabilisation, la capacité locale et celle des établissements à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes enceintes et les mères d'utiliser les services de santé génésique dans une province d'Afghanistan et deux régions du Malawi.

The project aims to advance th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls, reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and support advocacy for SRHR in Sierra Leone and Malawi. For adolescent girls in Sierra Leone and Malawi, the rate of maternal mortality and SGBV is very high. The project provides support to SGBV survivors, including clinical services, legal services, and advocacy, in addition to conducting education sessions on SGBV prevention and referral. The project works to strengthen the capacity of healthcare practitioners to provide high quality, gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and rights-based SRHR services. Project activities include: (1) providing training for staff that is tailored to the specific health needs of adolescents; (2) creating safe spaces for adolescents to receive SRHR services in private; and (3) working with healthcare practitioners on national health objectives. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, healthcare institutions are better able to respond to the SRHR needs of women and girls, empowering them to live healthy lives and make informed choices around their health and rights.

Results-based financing for eq...uitable access to maternal and child health care in Mali and Burkina Faso (IMCHA)

|
In Mali and Burkina Faso, mate...rnal and child mortality rates remain high. The governments of both countries are trying to increase access to and use of health care for women and children. They have adopted policies to remove financial barriers and are now piloting results-based financing, which gives financial incentives to providers of health services for achieving predefined indicators. Despite these efforts, health inequalities persist. This project will contribute to increasing equitable access to health services for the poor by strengthening the implementation of health reforms in Mali and Burkina Faso. It examines the emergence, relevance, design, and development of results-based financing in both countries, and studies its implementation, sustainability, and efficacy. The project will also look at the impact of results-based financing on health providers' motivation and teamwork, local leadership, community management committees of health facilities, access to and use of health services, and financial protection of vulnerable populations. It will document any unexpected outcomes. The project will result in a number of scientific publications from established and young researchers. In addition, the results of the study will be disseminated to decision-makers across Africa and to international agencies involved in the design and scale-up of results-based financing for maternal and child health. This project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) Initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

This pilot project aims to con...tribute to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality in four districts of the Kayes region. It supports the Government of Mali with the implementation of its Health and Social Development Plan (PRODESS), specifically to improve Maternal and Neonatal Health. The project is designed to complete the integrated community-level health system thereby strengthening the referral and evacuation plan, including the transport of pregnant women from villages to community health centres. The project comprises two complementary components: The first component takes the form of direct financial support to the four selected district authorities through the Regional Health Directorate. It aims to make new resources available for upgrading or building new health units, ensuring key services are available (e.g. emergency obstetric care, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS), having appropriate transportation in place, and ensuring availability and quality of qualified personnel, medicines and medical supplies. The second component is providing technical assistance by a Canadian support agency to assist the four districts with the implementation of their operational plans. It aims to help the local communities to get organized in order to set up in their villages a system to effectively reduce the delay in getting women in labour to the health centre. This component also contributes to strengthening the capacity of the local structures to plan and manage human and financial resources as well as to monitoring results. Part of the resources of this pilot project are being dedicated for the analysis of the results and the development and implementation of a results-dissemination strategy designed to inform the possible scaling up of this initiative. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.

The project, Access to Quality... Care Through Extending and Strengthening Health Systems (AQCESS), aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children (MNCH) of communities and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan. In these regions some MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality, are particularly poor, with women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. Project activities include: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme; Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya. This project builds on a previ...ous project that supported the Malian Red Cross' efforts towards the Government of Mali's plans to reduce maternal and child mortality in the regions of Koulikoro and Sikasso. The delivery of health services in times of stability as well as in times of emergency is critical in Mali where there are significant governance and security challenges and where there are low levels of economic and social development. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness in communities on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services available and ways to prevent illness through proper hygiene and sanitation; (2) training professional and community health workers, including volunteers, in the delivery and promotion of MNCH services; (3) training health staff in improved MNCH delivery, covering aspects such as management of service delivery, supervision of health workers, and procurement of medicines and supplies; (4) training health staff to collect, analyse and use administrative MNCH data to plan for improved MNCH service delivery and improved health outcomes; and, (5) equipping health facilities with essential supplies and equipment. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.1 million women, men, adolescents, children and newborns in Mali. In addition, approximately 3.2 million adults and children are expected to benefit indirectly from this project. This project is implemented through a consortium led by the Canadian Red Cross Society with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto; and in collaboration with the local partner, the Malian Red Cross.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for women and adolescent girls in Francophone West Africa, with a particular focus on Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Niger. The project seeks to increase demand for and use of sexual and reproductive health services by increasing knowledge of SRHR among women and adolescent girls and by reducing gender-related barriers to seeking these services by working with men, boys and cultural leaders in addition to women and adolescent girls. The project also expands access to quality sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion and post-abortion care. In addition, the project develops and implements a regional strategy to contribute to improved SRHR for women and adolescent girls. Project activities include: (1) training 520 health care workers to provide quality and youth-friendly health services; (2) establishing and deploying eight mobile health units; and (3) conducting events and outreach activities on SRHR, including contraception. An estimated 319,573 women and adolescent girls are expected to benefit from services and outreach activities, and 115,679 women and adolescent girls are expected to be provided with modern contraception.

The Yellen project - meaning '...light' in Bambara - works to enable women and adolescent girls in Kayes, one of the poorest and most underserved regions in Mali, to benefit from quality health services by improving their knowledge, increasing their decision-making power and their ability to influence their sexual and reproductive health and rights. The project proposes an innovative model of collaboration to harmonize the work of health service actors at the state, civil society (especially women's groups) and decentralized community levels. Project activities include: (1) supporting Mali's Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in the implementation of the Social Health Development Programme, specifically with regard to improving sexual and reproductive health and rights; (2) providing training and equipping health workers to deliver quality services that meet the specific needs of women and adolescent girls; and (3) constructing and rehabilitating community health centres and providing equipment and inputs for the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning and emergency obstetric care. The project aims to reach more than 540,000 women and adolescents. Management teams from three regional directorates (health, social development and solidarity economy, and promotion of women, children and family) and seven health districts from the Kayes region are also beneficiaries. Overall, 1,255,944 people from Kayes are reached by the project, dispersed in 951 villages, with a special focus on 300 villages.

This project aims to promote g...ender equality and the empowerment of women and girls by combating sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the southern, northern and central regions of Mali, including Gao, Timbuktu, Mopti, Segou and Bamako regions. Specifically, it works to help to remove barriers that prevent access to comprehensive and quality sexual and reproductive health services, by strengthening women's and girls' capacities to provide strong leadership and decision-making power for their health, and by helping to change the attitudes and behaviours of leaders and communities in favour of respect for gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights. It targets more than 500,000 women and girls, 50 women's organizations in these regions and is expected to reach a total of 2,500,000 adolescents and youth.

IMPROVING QUALITY OF MATERNAL ...HEALTH CARE FOR INDIGENOUS WOMEN IN ARGENTINA, MEXICO, AND PERU

Improving quality of maternal ...health care for indigenous women in Argentina, Mexico, and Peru
more
|
Latin America is home to the g...reatest inequities in the world, including inequality in access to quality health services. Indigenous peoples have the poorest health in the region, due to such factors as geographic isolation, limited access to safe water, sanitation and food, and a poor understanding of, and sensitivity to, cultural beliefs and practices. Among the indicators of greatest concern is the high rate of maternal mortality. Indigenous women consistently experience higher maternal mortality rates than non-indigenous women in Latin America. Efforts to improve maternal health for indigenous women and adolescent girls must be based on a clear understanding of how to provide and measure high-quality care that ensures adequate health outcomes with dignity. This project examines quality of care from a cultural and a technical perspective in three indigenous communities in Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. Each of these three case studies will explore perceptions of quality care among indigenous women, and will involve collection and analysis of data using a customized framework for quality of care indicators. The study will examine the implementation of integrated health service delivery networks in all the three countries. These networks are designed to coordinate different health providers and services and each country is implementing them differently. The three case studies will examine how the networks positively or negatively influence quality of care processes and outcomes. Results from the individual case studies and from the project as a whole are expected to inform strategies for scaling up efforts to improve quality of maternal care for indigenous populations. Expected outputs include scientific publications in Spanish- and English-language journals, and information sharing via community groups, the local press and social media.

Developing and Socializing a F...ramework for Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Morocco

The Middle East and North Afri...ca region is experiencing a period of transition imposed by changing political, demographic, social, and economic environments. Protracted conflict and growing populations of refugees and other displaced people have defined the region in recent years. Past gains made in accessing women's health and reproductive health services are losing ground. This is especially acute among adolescent boys and girls attempting to access sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and services. Growing risks related to SRH for this age group include sexual and gender-based violence, early marriage, and resulting SRH-related illnesses and deaths. Responding to these needs and creating effective prevention measures requires a context-specific, evidence-based framework upon which to base policies and actions. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa Health Policy Forum, an independent non-governmental forum to discuss health policy issues in the region. The aim of the project is to develop a regional, sustainable, gender-responsive, and evidence-based multi-sectoral adolescent sexual and reproductive health framework in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Morocco. The framework will address adolescent SRH issues as they pertain to education, communication, social norms, and legal frameworks. Using a gender and rights-based approach, this framework will be developed with different actors, including adolescent boys and girls, and will be tested and refined to optimize its uptake and influence. The project will produce position papers for each of the four countries, as well as targeted analyses and briefs for specific user groups. Key stakeholders include adolescent girls and boys, parents, educators, non-governmental organizations, health workers, and policymakers. Expected changes from the project include improvements in adolescent knowledge and understanding; awareness and agency with regards to sexual and reproductive health information and services; greater engagement across various sectors in a given country and across the four countries; and strengthened capacities to apply the framework by key stakeholders in each of the countries.

Implementation phase – Stren...gthening community to health facility care continuum in Marrere, Mozambique

Mozambique has made it a prior...ity to address its high maternal death rate and its high adolescent pregnancy rate. Access to quality sexual and reproductive health information, services, prenatal services, and delivery services is limited, particularly in rural areas across the country. This project will help find sustainable solutions to these challenges in Nampula province's rural Natikiri district. Researchers collaborated closely with the surrounding community, the local hospital, and provincial and national ministries of health to prioritize health problems and develop a set of innovative interventions. The project will cost and assess the impact of a community-owned motorcycle ambulance service and of scaled-up access to reproductive health outreach services and community hospital emergency delivery services. Strengthening the capacity of maternity staff, enhancing emergency obstetrical and outreach services, and advancing efforts to eliminate illicit charges to clients should contribute to strengthening and improving the quality of provincial maternal health services. An action research methodology based on intervention implementation and ongoing monitoring will be applied to cost interventions, identify lessons to improve ongoing implementation, and assess impact. Results will be shared with clinics and officials in the province and at the national level to promote wider application and adoption. Scientific publications will be produced and findings will be shared at national and international conferences. This project will be implemented with the collaboration of the University of Saskatchewan and the Universidade Lúrio in Mozambique. It is part of, and will contribute to, the goals of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program by improving the scale of access to services for pregnant women in Mozambique through innovation and community engagement. The Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) program is a seven-year, $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project aims to improve s...exual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health (SRMNH) for women, adolescent girls and newborns in the five most populous districts of Inhambane Province, Mozambique. This is achieved by increasing community support and access to sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health care; training health workers; improving the capacity of health institutions; and promoting gender-responsive and evidence-based approaches for planning of cost-effective interventions. Project activities include: (1) mobilizing local leaders and community members in 20 communities on women's empowerment and SRMNH; (2) creating and supporting networks of trained community-based health practitioners with links to health facilities; (3) designing and delivering an in-hospital initial and continuing education program; (4) strengthening the management of training institutions and training new health practitioners; (5) building or rehabilitating and equipping clinics for maternal and reproductive health; and (6) disseminating gender-responsive information and research on SRMNH. Community members in Inhambane Province, mainly women and adolescent girls of child-bearing age (165,000) and newborns (23,000), are expected to benefit from increased use of higher quality health services.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual, reproductive, maternal and neonatal health of up to 38,000 direct beneficiaries, mostly women and adolescent girls, with inadequate access to appropriate health care services in three districts in Nampula Province. It also seeks to reduce child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) and early or unwanted pregnancy. Project activities include: (1) conducting radio programmes on sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, early pregnancy and CEFM, as well as mobilization events in 60 villages; (2) establishing women's, men's and adolescent girls' and boys' groups and clubs to promote knowledge of health issues and life skills; (3) working with community elders who facilitate traditional initiation rites for adolescents to help protect girls' sexual and reproductive rights; (4) training health care providers on gender-responsive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health, maternal and neonatal health services; and (5) conducting provincial coalition meetings to identify solutions to end child marriage and develop a provincial action plan on CEFM topics, including early pregnancy, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and maternal and neonatal health.

The project aims to improve th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of some of the most vulnerable women and adolescent girls in six districts of Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique. It addresses SRHR barriers facing women and girls through three interrelated and mutually reinforcing efforts: improving the supply of services, so that quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services are available and effectively delivered; increasing the demand for and use of SRH services, which requires an environment where partners, families and communities understand the importance of SRHR and value women's and girls' decision-making power; and enhancing the use of SRHR information and evidence by key stakeholders. Project activities include: (1) building capacity of key district-level health workers; (2) addressing weaknesses with infrastructure, equipment and services (such as ensuring confidentiality); (3) strengthening referral systems, including for complicated post-abortion cases; (4) engaging men and boys as partners for change, sensitising community leaders, engaging community health committees; (5) providing family planning services through community health workers; and (6) generating and disseminating gender-sensitive research on SRHR and supporting the government's capacity to collect, analyse and use SRH data effectively.

The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI).

more
|
This project, also known as th...e Health, Empowerment and Rights (HER) project, addresses systemic barriers to the realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and to ending sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) among vulnerable and marginalized populations in Myanmar, such as women, children, youth as well as ethnic and religious minorities. Project activities include: (1) supporting government capacity in ending SGBV, especially through informed policies, legislation and standard operating procedures; (2) empowering women, girls, boys and young people through local and national SRHR education, networking and access to information; and (3) increasing access to SRHR and SGBV services.

IMPROVING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ...RIGHTS TO PREVENT TEENAGE PREGNANCIES IN NIGER

Improving reproductive health ...rights to prevent teenage pregnancies in Niger
more
|
In Niger, 76.3% of girls marry... before the age of 18 and 57% have already started their reproductive life. Of deaths among girls aged 15-19 in Niger, 34.4% are linked to pregnancy and its complications, with adolescent girls accounting for 25% of the country's maternal deaths. The fight against teenage pregnancies is a priority for Niger, but the policies and programs promoting sexual and reproductive health implemented over the past decades have had little effect. This project addresses teenage pregnancy and the norms, practices, and values surrounding adolescent sexuality and gender-based violence. A participatory research approach will be adopted, including hiring and training youth leaders from the communities where the project will be implemented. It will help to strengthen local capacities while benefitting from local networks, knowledge, and socio-cultural considerations. Evidence-based models co-created with communities will be developed and implemented. They will integrate the prevention of early pregnancy and gender-based violence and the promotion of adolescent reproductive health rights, with particular attention to the experiences of adolescent girls aged 10-14. A participatory assessment will highlight the comparative advantages of the integrated model for scaling up advocacy. This project is part of a research initiative developed by IDRC called Combatting sexual and reproductive health and rights in West Africa.

SYNERGIES IN VIDEO EDUTAINMENT...: CHILD SPACING AND REGIONAL TRAINING FOR ROLLOUT IN BAUCHI, NIGERIA (IMCHA)

Synergies in video edutainment...: Child spacing and regional training for rollout in Bauchi, Nigeria (IMCHA)
more

Nigeria has one of the highest... rates of maternal mortality in the world. Maternal mortality is especially high in Bauchi State, where, according to a recent survey, only 16% of women had a qualified attendant for their last delivery, and only 40% had four or more visits to a government facility before delivery (four visits is the minimum standard set by UNICEF and the World Health Organization). Both national and state governments have identified maternal mortality as a priority issue, with a particular focus on strengthening primary healthcare services to improve maternal and child health. One of the key strategies for reducing maternal and child mortality is child spacing. This project, a partnership between the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning/McGill University and the Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria, will develop and test a culturally appropriate home-visit intervention focusing on child spacing and the use of contraception. This home-visit approach, using portable video-education technologies, is now in use to reach the most vulnerable population. It will be expanded to all pregnant women and their spouses. Visits will cover information on safer pregnancy and delivery and will support couples to adopt safer behaviours in child spacing using culturally relevant practices. The project will further work with state governments, in particular the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, to equip a critical mass of government officers with the necessary skills and tools for effective management, supervision, and monitoring of such a program. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

RESPONDING TO THE CHALLENGE OF... ADOLESCENT PERINATAL DEPRESSION
more
|
Responding to the challenge of... adolescent perinatal depression
more
|
Adolescents experience a numbe...r of major neurobiological, hormonal, physical, and psychological changes, which present important risks to their health and well-being. Pregnancy compounds this experience for adolescents, and society's expectations often add further pressures well beyond those experienced by the average pregnant adult. However, health systems are not attuned to the particular care needs of pregnant adolescents. Evidence shows that a critical gap exists in the management of perinatal adolescent depression, a condition that brings significant long-lasting consequences for both the mother and the infant.Through this project, researchers will complement their ongoing work in maternal mental health by addressing the critical knowledge gap regarding the mental health needs of adolescents. Specifically, they will develop and evaluate an intervention program for adolescent perinatal depression, and determine the factors required for its integration in the delivery of routine primary care. They will collaborate with the Nigerian National Mental Health Action Committee to promote the uptake of their findings into policies and practices related to the management of perinatal depression. This work will contribute to the much-needed body of evidence on how to develop policies and scale up programs for integrated adolescent mental health care in Nigeria and beyond. The project will build on the established partnership between the University of Ibadan (Nigeria) and McGill University (Canada). By focusing on adolescent mental health, it addresses an important under-researched and strategic niche area in maternal and neonatal health. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project aims to contribut...e to the reduction of maternal and child mortality amongst vulnerable women and children, including adolescent girls, in targeted underserved remote areas of Bangladesh, Ghana, Haiti, Nigeria and Senegal. The project works in these five countries to improve the quality, availability and utilization of essential maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. The project also works to strengthen the Canadian public's understanding of the reasons behind Canada's global investments in MNCH and SRH. Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care-seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, and providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; and (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government on health resources and planning of services. Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), as well as with Plan International offices in the project's five targeted countries, local governments, and local NGOs.

|

The project aims to improve Se...xual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) for adolescent girls in the Amazon province of Loreto, Peru, which has the highest rate of adolescent pregnancy in the country (31% in 2016). By empowering girls and working with boys and communities, the project helps prevent sexual violence and unwanted pregnancies in one of the poorest regions of Peru. Project activities include: (1) training, workshops and coaching activities with adolescents and youth in coordination with schools, community leaders and families; (2) development and distribution of information on adolescents' SRHR as part of a comprehensive communication strategy; (3) training of health workers and creation of specialised health facilities to improve sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents; (4) training of teachers, tutors and local Ministry of Education staff on comprehensive sexual education for adolescents, including the prevention of violence; and (5) training of youth leaders and networks to increase their capacity to participate in municipal, regional and national decision-making spaces. Project activities are intended to reach 78,000 direct beneficiaries, many of whom are from indigenous communities.
