The Improving Maternal Partici...pation and Access to Community Training (IMPACT) project aims to increase the utilization and improve the delivery of culturally appropriate health services to pregnant & lactating mothers and their children in 111 hard-to-reach indigenous communities in Guatemala and Honduras. Activities include: 1) providing MNCH centres with essential health care equipment and ensuring that they are adequately staffed with well-trained MNCH Aides; 2) delivery of lactation workshops, as well as one-on-one counseling and support, to encourage women to initiate early and exclusive breastfeeding of their infants for at least 5 months; 3) delivering awareness raising workshops among key decision-makers in communities of MNCH related health risks, and enabling the health-related decision-making of vulnerable women, and 4) delivery of nutrition demonstration workshops to pregnant and lactating women. This project is expected to contribute to the improved health of 68,400 women and children, including 13,800 girls and 13, 300 boys. In addition, more than 160,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly. CAUSE Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with CAUSE Honduras, CAUSE Guatemala and Instituticion Mam de Desarrollo Integral (IMDI).

Many women and children in Gua...temala and Kenya are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality. Chronic malnutrition affects 48 percent of the population of Guatemala, and 35 percent in Kenya. Infant mortality rates range from 24 deaths per 1,000 live births in Guatemala to 52 deaths per 1,000 live births in Kenya. In Guatemala, for every 100,000 births, 140 mothers die due to complications from child birth, and in Kenya the figure is 488 maternal deaths for every 100,000 births. This project seeks to contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. This initiative will: 1) increase the effectiveness of community referral systems; 2) increase awareness of existing health services; 3) strengthen the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. The project is improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant malnutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, local nutrition related health information systems are being strengthened through improved management of data collection, dissemination and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that the Project will reach more than 2.2 million people; where more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly and more than 880,000 people will benefit indirectly in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health; and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad. Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities.

March 2016 - Haiti continues t...o make significant progress in recovering from the devastating earthquake of January 2010. However, critical needs and acute vulnerabilities remain for 1.6 million who require humanitarian assistance in 2016. An estimated 3 million people are suffering from food insecurity, including 2 million people experiencing severe food insecurity. Although the overall incidence of cholera has been reduced, it remains one of the largest epidemics in the world. Life-saving activities remain necessary to cut the transmission of the disease and ensure that adequate care is provided to the most vulnerable of the affected population. Haiti also ranks as one of the countries with the highest exposure to natural disasters with an estimated 60% of the population vulnerable to natural hazards. With GAC's support, Médecins du Monde is contributing to prevent and treat severe acute malnutrition and moderate acute malnutrition in the Artibonite and North West Departments. Project activities include: (1) providing quality nutritional services and treatment for severe acute malnutrition through Nutritional Stabilization Units; (2) strengthening nutritional surveillance and referral networks; and (3) training of medical personnel and community health workers.

November 2016 - The humanitari...an crisis arising from the 2015-2016 El Niño is continuing to deepen, with the United Nations estimating that more than 60 million people are now affected worldwide. While international donors, including Canada, have already stepped up with humanitarian assistance to save lives and protect livelihoods, a significant funding gap persists and humanitarian needs are expected to escalate well into 2017. The impact is most pronounced in Ethiopia, which experienced its worst drought in 50 years, leaving 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance. In the Americas, Haiti is one of the most affected countries, with a third consecutive year of drought, exacerbated by El Niño, leaving more than 3.6 million people food insecure. Similar impacts are being felt around the globe. To date, twenty three countries have appealed for help to meet critical needs, including food, agricultural support, and water and sanitation. In part with Canada's support, the World Food Program (WFP) is helping to meet the emergency food needs of drought-affected people in some of the countries and regions worst hit by El Niño, including: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan in eastern Africa; Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe in southern Africa; El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua in the Americas, and Papua New Guinea in the Asia Pacific region. Although specific programming differs based on each country context, WFP is saving lives and protecting livelihoods through the provision of direct general food assistance, cash-for-work or food-for-work schemes, and targeted supplementary feeding for particularly vulnerable groups.

The initiative aims to address... several development needs and challenges all linked to underlying poverty and lack of basic services in the remote rural areas in the Ramechap district in Nepal, in the Azabache and Nacaome areas in Honduras and in the Gourma province in Burkina Faso. The overall objective of the initiative is to improve the health of mothers and young children, and thus contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality, through assistance with village and household-scale infrastructure, parent health education and enhanced nutrition and food security. World Neighbours Canada aims to develop and implement training programs for women and men to learn about family planning options, to increase food crop production using sustainable and ecologically sound practices, to promote proper nutrition in infants and young children under 2 years of age that includes breast feeding promotion, developing and implementing water system plans with participation of users etc. The project proposes to benefit more than 50,000 women, men, girls and boys. World Neigbours Canada is working with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) in Nepal, L'Association d'Appui à la Promotion du Développement Durable des Communautés (APDC) in Burkina Faso, and Vecinos Honduras, in Honduras to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's commitment to maternal, newborn and child health programming.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children.Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation.Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya. This project aims to serve chi...ldren less than five years of age with vitamin A supplementation and de-worming programs in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya. The mortality rate for children less than five years of age is 73/1000 live births in Kenya and 108/1000, in Côte d'Ivoire, in 2015. Vitamin A deficiency and worm infection causes and worsens malnutrition, anemia and diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, which are a leading cause of death for children less than five years of age in these countries. Currently, these services are provided in both countries through schools, leaving children younger than five years unreached; a gap which this project is addressing. This project is providing improved delivery of these essential health services in communities where the actual coverage for children under five years of age is low.Project activities include: (1) increasing access to vitamin A and preventative de-worming treatments using existing community-based delivery systems; (2) strengthening the local health care system by training local health workers and community health volunteers in vitamin A supplementation and de-worming; (3) creating and utilizing a standardized toolkit for training on the implementation of responsive combined deworming and Vitamin A supplementation program targeting pre-school aged children; and (4) improving community engagement around vitamin A deficiency and de-worming in young children through responsive communication and engagement plans implementation as well as participatory activities with communities members, community leaderships and health structures and other gender equality and women's groups. The local partners are the Medical Assistance Programs in Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire which implement this project in 5 regions of Côte d'Ivoire (Gneby-Tiassa-Me, Bélier, Bounkani-Gontougo, Gbeke, Gôh and Indenie Duablin) and in three counties of Kenya (Siaya, Kwale and Kilifi). Vitamin Angels, a US-based NGO, is also a partner and provides in-kind contributions of albendazole (de-worming treatments) and vitamin A supplements for the duration of the project. This project directly impacts 1.4 million children and 16,600 adults working as community health workers or volunteers.

This initiative aims to improv...e the health and nutrition status of poor and vulnerable mothers, newborns and children in select regions by working with local health authorities. It will directly address malnutrition in the first 1000 days of children's lives in targeted districts and inform national nutrition policies in the targeted countries. Malnutrition is the cause of over 3 million child deaths annually and results in illnesses such as stunting, wasting and anemia, as well as poor motor, cognitive and social development. The initiative will be implemented in Bangladesh (Thakurgaon District), Myanmar (Thabaung Township), Kenya (Elgeyo Marakwet county), Pakistan (Sukkur District), and Tanzania (Singida and Shinyanga Regions). The effects of malnutrition in these countries are significant as collectively they represent 13% of the global burden of stunting, 15% of the global burden of severe anaemia and 12% of the global burden of wasting. Such illnesses are especially pronounced in rural regions, such as those targeted by the project. The initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 2 million individuals, including more than 835,000 women, 740,000 children and 490,000 men, and indirectly reach an estimated 2.5 million individuals who are not targeted by the project but who will benefit from the strengthened health system and improved health services. Policy changes in nutrition and wider application of existing policies as a result of the project advocacy efforts will also have positive impact on indirect beneficiaries. In addition, the initiative's activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 3 million Canadians. Activities include: (1) recruiting, training and equipping community healthcare workers to promote and provide essential health services; (2) training local health councils in improved data analysis and reporting to inform planning and delivery of MNCH services; (3) raising awareness of key nutritional practices, including dietary diversity; (4) providing inputs and training in the development of home gardens; (5) informing and increasing community participation in policy dialogue with governments on MNCH issues; and, (6) implementing interactive media and linking Canadians with empowered youth in a mentorship program to improve the knowledge and ability of Canadians to engage in international MNCH and nutrition issues. It is implemented by World Vision Canada in collaboration with the Micronutrient Initiative, HarvestPlus, the Canadian Society for International Health, the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the Hospital for Sick Children. Project implementation is also supported by the following local partners: in Bangladesh: World Vision Bangladesh, Institute of Public Health Nutrition, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh - Office of the Civil Surgeon Thakugaon; in Myanmar: World Vision International - Myanmar,

In part with Canada's support, UNICEF is helping to meet the emergency food needs of drought-affected people in some of the countries and regions worst hit by El Nino, including: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan in eastern Africa; Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe in southern Africa; and Mongolia, and the Pacific islands in the Asia Pacific region. Although specific programming differs based on each country context, UNICEF is saving lives and protecting livelihoods through the treatment or prevention of acute malnutrition, the provision of safe water and sanitation, and other activities designed to meet the specific needs of vulnerable women and children.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. World Vision Canada provides five interns with an opportunity to work in Bangladesh, Laos and Malawi over the course of one year. The interns work in the areas of securing the futures of children and youth, child protection and advocacy, and food security focusing on health and nutrition. They contribute to the Child Protection and Health and Nutrition Projects in Bangladesh. In Laos they support the development of the Education Technical Approach and Advocacy Community Engagement. In Malawi the intern supports other nutrition projects.

This project seeks to save the... lives of women, newborns and children in Kenya and Liberia. The Canadian Red Cross Society and its partners in Kenya and Liberia work with the Ministries of Health in those countries to deliver a program in Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM), an approach to improve the health of pregnant women, newborns and children in 44 hard-to access rural communities. The project expects to reach 66,000 beneficiaries, including 12,000 children under five years old and 26,000 women of childbearing age in West Pokot District in Kenya and Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia. Ministry of Health-supervised community health workers and volunteers are selected by Community Health Committees and trained in community based health and first aid, in order to treat and refer sick children, and ensure community-level access to life-saving medications and basic health services.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions.

The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda.

This project aims to improve t...he survival and well-being of children under the age of five in 15 African countries. The project seeks to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The most common services provided by these outreach events are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and reduce child mortality rates, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. This project builds on previous support to Child Health Days through 'Scaling up Nutrition and Immunizations' and 'Child Health Days and Weeks'. The current project continues to support the Child Health Days delivery platform in countries where under-five mortality is high, while increasing focus on building the capacity of national governments to integrate and deliver these interventions in the long term./Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 15 pays africains par l'augmentation de la couverture d'interventions critiques en matière de santé et de nutrition.
