This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) fournir des services de nutrition fondamentaux, notamment des vitamines et des minéraux essentiels et des produits alimentaires enrichis et promouvoir l'allaitement maternel; 2) donner des conseils sur la nutrition et des trousses de soins prénatals pour réduire la mortalité, l'anémie, les anomalies congénitales, le faible poids à la naissance et les retards de croissance.Ce projet s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'engagement pris par le Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants.

This project aims to improve t...he nutritional status of children under the age of five (350,000) and pregnant and lactating women (400,000) in Ethiopia by increasing access to quality nutrition services, nutritious food, and water and sanitation services (250,000 people and 25,000 households). Despite recent progress, malnutrition remains a serious problem in Ethiopia, and many children do not regularly have enough nutritious food to keep them healthy. Malnutrition contributes to about half of all deaths of children under five years old. Activities include: (1) core nutrition interventions (such as nutrition education, malnutrition detection, access to supplementary feeding); and (2) access to nutritious food, including nutrition-sensitive agricultural products (such as vegetables, fruits, milk) and water, hygiene and sanitation. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bilan nutritionnel des enfants de moins de cinq ans (350 000 enfants) et des femmes enceintes et qui allaitent (400 000 femmes) en Éthiopie en élargissant l'accès à des services de nutrition de qualité, à des aliments nutritifs ainsi qu'à des services d'approvisionnement en eau et d'assainissement (250 000 personnes et 25 000 ménages). Malgré les progrès réalisés récemment, la malnutrition demeure un problème grave en Éthiopie et bon nombre d'enfants ne consomment pas assez d'aliments nutritifs régulièrement pour rester en santé. La malnutrition est à l'origine de près de la moitié des décès d'enfants de moins de cinq ans. Parmi les activités : 1) des interventions nutritionnelles de base (éducation en matière de nutrition, dépistage de la malnutrition, accès à une alimentation complémentaire); 2) un accès à des aliments nutritifs, y compris des produits agricoles qui jouent un rôle important dans la nutrition (légumes, fruits et lait), ainsi qu'à des services d'approvisionnement en eau, d'hygiène et d'assainissement.

October 2015 - The failure of ...the Belg short rains (February - April) across much of southern and eastern Ethiopia has caused the number of people requiring humanitarian food assistance to rise from 2.9 million in January to over 8.2 million in mid-October. Water and pasture shortages have led to decreased food production and deaths of livestock in pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities. Malnutrition rates, particularly amongst children, are on the rise. Ethiopia is facing its worst food security crisis in decades, with no improvement expected until late in 2016. With Canada's support, UNICEF is procuring and managing the common supply of therapeutic feeding commodities (fortified food commodities and drugs) for the community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) program. CMAM, which will be implemented by both government agencies and NGOs, is expected to reach more than 18,000 severely malnourished children by the end of 2016.

Failed rains in many areas of southern and eastern Ethiopia throughout 2015 have left more than 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance, a massive increase from 2.9 million people at the beginning of the year. Malnutrition rates also continue to rise with 350,000 children expected to require treatment for severe acute malnutrition in early 2016. In addition, access to safe water, particularly in rural areas, continues to decline, leading to widespread livestock deaths and the threat of outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as cholera. Depending on events, the situation in Ethiopia is expected to remain critical until at least October 2016. With Canada's support, UNICEF is supporting national and international efforts to combat acute malnutrition through the management of a common pipeline for therapeutic feeding commodities and medicines. Project activities include: (1) providing improved access to safe water and proper sanitation for drought-affected households; and (2) providing protection for children who face increased vulnerability due to the drought.

Project activities include: improving access to treatment for acute malnutrition for more than 51,000 people and the provision of safe water and adequate sanitation facilities; and (2) increasing knowledge of proper hygiene practices for more than 47,500 people.

The project addresses the cons...traints that prevent smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana from producing sufficient food to feed themselves and generate revenue and from becoming resilient to unexpected events such as droughts. It offers transformative and sustainable solutions that address the root causes behind the lack of access to sufficient, nutritious food and the vulnerability to food shortages in the northern regions, while also promoting community and household resilience to external shocks and stresses. Expected activities include: practical training for 21,000 smallholder farmers and service providers in sustainable cropping practices, livestock production, aquaculture, and water management; provision of tools and services, including technical assistance in climate change adaptation and disaster risk management practices, to 150 communities to improve productivity; strengthening and promoting gender-responsive systems of agricultural extension and support; training for 21,000 women and men in income generating activities; and strengthening access for 21,000 smallholder farmers to high-value markets in selected agricultural and non-agricultural sub-sectors/ Le projet apporte une solution aux contraintes qui empêchent les petits exploitants agricoles dans le nord du Ghana à produire des aliments en quantité suffisante pour se nourrir et générer des revenus et à devenir résilients à des événements imprévus comme des sécheresses. Il propose des solutions transformatrices et durables qui s'attaquent aux causes profondes du manque d'accès à des réserves suffisantes d'aliments nutritifs et de la vulnérabilité aux pénuries alimentaires dans les régions du nord du Ghana, et qui promeuvent également la résilience des ménages et des communautés aux chocs contraintes externes. This project aims to improve a...ccess to safe, sufficient and nutritious food for women, men, girls and boys in Guatemala. The project supports the World Food Programme's (WFP) Purchase for Progress (P4P) Program in Guatemala. It promotes an integrated strategy comprising three components: i) Purchase for Progress, which improves the incomes of smallholder farmers through the increased quantity and quality of production and sales of surpluses to markets; ii) Scaling-up Nutrition, which helps prevent and reduce chronic malnutrition through distribution of fortified food and nutrition education; and iii) Resilience, which improves community conditions in disaster-prone areas, and enhances food availability throughout the year.Project activities include the following: (1) providing technical assistance to and sharing best practices with small-scale farmers on crop management and technologies to increase the quality and quantity of their yields; (2) promoting better post-harvest management to reduce crop losses; (3) assisting farmer organizations to increase sales and receive fair market prices from buyers; (4) purchasing food from participating farmer organizations' crop surpluses to feed up to 17,500 infants and children aged 6-23 months per year and up to 10,000 pregnant and lactating women per year to complement breastfeeding and prevent stunting or chronic undernutrition; and (5) strengthening the business management skills of small-scale farmer organizations and increasing women farmers' participation, representation and skills./ Le projet vise à améliorer l'accès à des aliments salubres et nutritifs en quantité suffisante pour les femmes, les hommes, les filles et les garcons au Guatemala. Le projet appuie l'initiative « Achats au service du progrès » du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) et l'initiative «Renforcement de la nutrition - SUN» au Guatemala. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe principalement d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad. Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international. Pour assurer l'avenir des jeunes et des collectivités, l'initiative internationale de Cuso International offre 40 stages de deux ans à l'intention des Canadiens et Canadiennes. Les stagiaires travaillent au Pérou, en Guyane, au Cameroun, au Nicaragua et au Laos, dans les domaines de la stimulation de la croissance économique durable, l'augmentation de la sécurité alimentaire et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et de jeunes. Humber Institute Health and Private Sector Development project provides 20 interns with internships in ten countries: Bangladesh, Haiti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Peru, Nicaragua and Colombia. The interns work to address development challenges in relation to local needs by contributing to private sector development and health improvement by strengthening Food Security and Nutrition programming and Water and Sanitation projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le projet en santé et développement du secteur privé de l'institut Humber permet à 20 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans dix pays, soit au Bangladesh, en Haiti, en Éthiopie, au Malawi, en Tanzanie, en Bolivie, au Burkina Faso, au Pérou, au Nicaragua et en Colombie. Les stagiaires abordent les défis du développement selon les besoins locaux en participant à la croissance du secteur privé et à l'amélioration de la santé, en renforçant la programmation en sécurité alimentaire et en nutrition, ainsi que les projets en eau et services sanitaires.

This project supports the Worl...d Food Programme's (WFP) Country Program 2012-2016 for Honduras. It aims to increase access to nutritious food and essential micronutrients for vulnerable populations residing in eight departments of the southern and south-western regions of the country. The main beneficiaries include: pre-school and school age children, pregnant and lactating women, children under five years of age, and other vulnerable groups. This project supports two components of the WFP Country Program 2012-2016: (1) The School Feeding component supports increased access to nutritious food for pre-school and primary school boys and girls. A daily morning meal which represents 30-40% of the recommended daily nutritional intake for school children will be administered to beneficiaries for an average of 150 school days. A mid-term evaluation of CP 2008-2011 identified school feeding as a major incentive for poor families to send their children to school and a significant motivator for children to attend school; and (2) The nutritional support for vulnerable groups component aims to ensure nutritional support for pregnant and lactating women, children under five, anti-retroviral therapy patients and other vulnerable women and men. The special nutritional needs of beneficiaries will be addressed through targeted food assistance (monthly household food rations), and essential micronutrient supplementation. This component also focuses on the prevention of stunting for infants under two, by focusing on proper micronutrient interventions within the 1,000 day window. / Cette initiative appuie le programme-pays 2012-2016 du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) au Honduras. Ce soutien contribue à augmenter l'accès à des aliments nutritifs et à des micronutriments essentiels chez les populations les plus vulnérables situées dans huit départements au sud et au sud-ouest du pays. Les principaux bénéficiaires sont : des enfants d'âge préscolaire et scolaire, des femmes enceintes et qui allaitent, des enfants de moins de cinq ans ainsi que d'autres groupes vulnérables. Cette initiative appuie deux composantes du programme-pays (2012-2016) du PAM : 1) La composante de cantines scolaires vise à augmenter l'accès à des aliments nutritifs chez les garçons et les filles d'âge préscolaire et scolaire. Un repas quotidien matinal représentant 30 à 40 % de l'apport nutritionnel recommandé pour les enfants inscrits à l'école sera fournit pour une moyenne de 150 jours d'école. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. World Vision Canada provides five interns with an opportunity to work in Bangladesh, Laos and Malawi over the course of one year. The interns work in the areas of securing the futures of children and youth, child protection and advocacy, and food security focusing on health and nutrition. They contribute to the Child Protection and Health and Nutrition Projects in Bangladesh. In Laos they support the development of the Education Technical Approach and Advocacy Community Engagement. In Malawi the intern supports other nutrition projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Vision Mondiale Canada offre à cinq stagiaires la possibilité de travailler dans trois pays, soit au Bangladesh, au Laos et au Malawi pour un an. Les stagiaires travaillent dans les domaines prioritaires pour assurer l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes, la protection et la défense des droits de l'enfant, et la sécurité alimentaire axée sur la santé et la nutrition. Au Bangladesh, ils participent aux projets d'appui à la protection de la santé et de l'alimentation chez l'enfant. Au Laos, ils appuient la création d'une approche technique en matière d'éducation et d'engagement communautaire au niveau de la défense des droits. Au Malawi, le stagiaire appuie d'autres projets en nutrition.

Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Bénin, au Burundi, à Madagascar, en Mauritanie, en Ouganda, en République centrafricaine, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone, au Soudan du Sud, en Tanzanie, au Tchad et en Zambie.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University de Terre-Neuve permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans cinq pays, soit au Cambodge, au Vietnam, aux Philippines, en Afrique du Sud et au Malawi. L'ensemble des stages vise la régie de l'environnement de manière durable. Les stages ont pour objectifs spécifiques la sécurité alimentaire, la stimulation de la croissance économique durable et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes. Les autres domaines de concentration sont la promotion de la bonne gouvernance par l'entremise des institutions du secteur public; l'appui à la croissance du secteur privé en créant un environnement favorable et en favorisant l'entrepreneuriat; et l'amélioration des résultats en matière de santé en renforçant la sécurité alimentaire et l'éducation.

The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. World Vision Canada provides five interns with an opportunity to work in Bangladesh, Laos and Malawi over the course of one year. The interns work in the areas of securing the futures of children and youth, child protection and advocacy, and food security focusing on health and nutrition. They contribute to the Child Protection and Health and Nutrition Projects in Bangladesh. In Laos they support the development of the Education Technical Approach and Advocacy Community Engagement. In Malawi the intern supports other nutrition projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Vision Mondiale Canada offre à cinq stagiaires la possibilité de travailler dans trois pays, soit au Bangladesh, au Laos et au Malawi pour un an. Les stagiaires travaillent dans les domaines prioritaires pour assurer l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes, la protection et la défense des droits de l'enfant, et la sécurité alimentaire axée sur la santé et la nutrition. Au Bangladesh, ils participent aux projets d'appui à la protection de la santé et de l'alimentation chez l'enfant. Au Laos, ils appuient la création d'une approche technique en matière d'éducation et d'engagement communautaire au niveau de la défense des droits. Au Malawi, le stagiaire appuie d'autres projets en nutrition.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail. The project aims to strengthen... the farming practices of more than 30,000 smallholder farmers in organic farming by helping them apply ecological principles to how they practise agriculture using participatory, farmer-to-farmer teaching methods. It supports the development of farmer associations and improved marketing through farmer-to-farmer exchanges and training. The initiative also seeks to pilot a youth-led small business initiative to promote the supply of nutritious foods on the local market while supporting youth livelihoods. The project aims to train 6,000 farming households on sustainable agroecological methods, nutrition, and gender issues and provide technical support to farmers in production and cooperative development. The initiative also supports 200 farmers on a pilot project of growing local yellow maize seeds to improve vitamin A deficiency in young children. In addition, this project aims to train 200 youth and 100 farmers in small business operations and market development, food processing, and preservation methods./ Ce projet vise à renforcer les pratiques agricoles de plus de 30 000 petits producteurs biologiques en les aidant à appliquer des principes écologiques à leur mode de culture axé sur une approche participative et d'apprentissage par les pairs. Il appuie la création d'associations agricoles et l'amélioration de la commercialisation au moyen d'échanges entre agriculteurs et d'une formation par les pairs. Le projet vise également à mettre à l'essai une initiative de petites entreprises dirigées par des jeunes en vue de promouvoir l'approvisionnement du marché local en aliments nutritifs, tout en appuyant des modes de subsistance ciblant les jeunes. Ce projet vise à offrir à 6 000 ménages agricoles une formation sur les méthodes agroécologiques durables, la nutrition et les questions liées à l'égalité entre les sexes, et à leur apporter un soutien technique dans le domaine de la production et du développement coopératif. L'initiative appuie également 200 agriculteurs dans le cadre d'un projet pilote sur la production de semences de maïs jaune en vue de combler le manque de vitamine A chez les jeunes enfants. De plus, ce projet offre une formation à 200 jeunes et à 100 agriculteurs sur le fonctionnement des petites entreprises, le développement de marchés, la transformation des aliments et les méthodes de conservation.

The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health in Mali. It supports the Ministry of Health of Mali in implementing the National Health and Social Development Program, especially making health services geographically and financially accessible, meeting demand, improving the quality of services, and building institutional capacity.As with all budget support initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Mali to strengthen its aid effectiveness, by focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthening mutual accountability. Sector-wide budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue among CIDA, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This initiative is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors.The initiative's expected results include a stronger health care system that better meets the needs of women, men, and children; improved prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhoea, respiratory diseases, and other infectious diseases targeted by an expanded program on immunization; and better nutrition for children under five and pregnant women.This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project is one of two parts of a $64 million contribution./ Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Mali. Il fournit un soutien au ministère de la Santé du Mali à mettre en oeuvre son Programme national de développement sanitaire et social (PRODESS), plus particulièrement en ce qui concerne l'accessibilité géographique aux services de santé, l'accessibilité financière, le soutien à la demande, l'amélioration de la qualité des services et le renforcement des capacités institutionnelles.Comme c'est le cas pour toutes les initiatives d'appui budgétaire, le Canada travaille en étroite collaboration avec d'autres bailleurs de fonds et le gouvernement du Mali pour accroître l'efficacité de son aide, et ce, en mettant l'emphase sur la responsabilisation, la transparence et l'efficacité des systèmes nationaux, en accroissant la coordination et l'harmonisation entre les donateurs, et en renforçant la responsabilité mutuelle. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Bénin, au Burundi, à Madagascar, en Mauritanie, en Ouganda, en République centrafricaine, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone, au Soudan du Sud, en Tanzanie, au Tchad et en Zambie.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Humber Institute Health and Private Sector Development project provides 20 interns with internships in ten countries: Bangladesh, Haiti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Peru, Nicaragua and Colombia. The interns work to address development challenges in relation to local needs by contributing to private sector development and health improvement by strengthening Food Security and Nutrition programming and Water and Sanitation projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le projet en santé et développement du secteur privé de l'institut Humber permet à 20 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans dix pays, soit au Bangladesh, en Haiti, en Éthiopie, au Malawi, en Tanzanie, en Bolivie, au Burkina Faso, au Pérou, au Nicaragua et en Colombie. This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. May 2015 - On 25 April, an ear...thquake of 7.8 magnitude hit Nepal near the capital city of Kathmandu. The government has reported that 30 out of 75 districts are affected in the Western and Central Regions, including districts in Kathmandu Valley. The epicentre is located 81 km northwest of Kathmandu. A number of large aftershocks have occurred since the first earthquake. To date, over 5,000 deaths have been confirmed and over 11,000 people have been injured. These figures are expected to increase as more information becomes available. With DFATD's support and that of other donors, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is helping to meet the emergency water, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition, and protection needs of people affected by the earthquake. Project activities include: (1) providing safe drinking water to people in informal camps; (2) distributing hygiene kits, including soap, sanitary towels and detergent; (3) delivering tents and tarpaulins to serve as emergency shelters for families; (4) establishing safe spaces for children and women; (5) providing psychological support to children in informal camps; (6) reunifying separated children with their families; (7) providing emergency school kits for children in temporary learning centres; (8) ensuring access to programmes to treat and prevent acute malnutrition in vulnerable population groups; and (9) providing protection services and counselling to vulnerable and at-risk populations. / Mai 2015 - Le 25 avril, un séisme de magnitude 7,8 a frappé le Népal près de Katmandou, la capitale. Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d'autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une aide alimentaire d'urgence à plus de 36 millions de personnes touchées par un conflit, l'insécurité alimentaire aiguë et l'instabilité politique dans certains pays d'Afrique.

This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) fournir des services de nutrition fondamentaux, notamment des vitamines et des minéraux essentiels et des produits alimentaires enrichis et promouvoir l'allaitement maternel; 2) donner des conseils sur la nutrition et des trousses de soins prénatals pour réduire la mortalité, l'anémie, les anomalies congénitales, le faible poids à la naissance et les retards de croissance.Ce projet s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'engagement pris par le Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants.

This initiative aims to improv...e the lives and incomes of 10,000 poor and vulnerable farming households (approximately 80,000 people) through agriculture-driven economic growth. The project is providing training and related technical support in modern farming methods to farmers in order to increase yields for selected commodity and livestock value chains. The project also aims to improve the business environment to make it more favourable for farmers, women and youth. Project activities seek to increase market access, generate employment and improve nutrition for vulnerable women and children./ L'initiative vise à améliorer la vie de 10,000 ménages pauvres (environ 80 000 personnes) pratiquant l'agriculture à petite échelle grâce à une croissance économique axée sur l'agriculture. La mise en place de programmes de formation et d'appui technique permet d'accroitre les rendements agricoles pour les chaînes de valeur des marchandises et du bétail appuyées par le projet, d'augmenter l'accès aux marchés, de créer des emplois et d'améliorer la nutrition des enfants et des femmes vulnérables. Le projet permet également d'améliorer l'environnement des affaires pour le rendre plus favorable pour les petits agriculteurs, les femmes et les jeunes.
