This project aims to increase ...the survival and health of women of childbearing age, newborns and children under five in developing countries by supporting the Micronutrient Initiative (MI). It supports the MI in scaling up vital micronutrient programming and expanding its influence on global policies and practices that address undernutrition among vulnerable women and children through enhanced research, monitoring and evaluation, and public engagement. The interventions of the MI focus on the key period of pre-pregnancy through early childhood, where child development is most critical. During the period covered by this project, the MI works in over 70 countries worldwide, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.The project supports direct, evidence-based and cost-effective nutrition interventions, including: (1) support for the delivery and administration of life-saving vitamin A supplements to up to 200 million children per year; (2) support for private salt producers to increase the production of iodized salt reaching an estimated 120 million people per year; and (3) support for the administration of iron and folic acid supplements to reach up to 80% of pregnant women in the regions targeted by the Initiative.The MI works with existing health systems to identify optimal delivery mechanisms, provides support to strengthen those systems that need it most, and supports increasing national ownership and sustainability of micronutrient activities and services./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la survie et la santé des femmes en âge de procréer, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans les pays en développement en soutenant l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM). Il soutient celle-ci en augmentant les programmes sur les micronutriments essentiels et en étendant leur influence sur des politiques et des pratiques mondiales visant à lutter contre la dénutrition chez les femmes et les enfants vulnérables au moyen d'activités de recherche, d'un suivi, d'une évaluation et d'une mobilisation du public accrus. Les interventions de l'IM visent la période cruciale précédant la grossesse et se poursuivant tout au long de la petite enfance, période déterminante pour le développement de l'enfant. Au cours de la période visée par ce projet, l'IM est mise en œuvre dans plus de 70 pays, et concentre ses activités plus particulièrement en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud.Le projet soutient des interventions directes, fondées sur des données probantes et rentables dans le domaine de la nutrition, notamment : 1) l'aide à l'acheminement et à la distribution de suppléments essentiels de vitamine A à près de 200 millions d'enfants par année; 2) l'aide aux producteurs de sel privés afin qu'ils puissent accroître leur production de sel iodé, qui bénéficiera à environ 120 millions de personnes par année; 3) l'aide à la distribution de suppléments de fer et d'acide folique à au moins 80 % des femmes enceintes dans les régions ciblée

The main objective of the prog...ram is to reduce gender inequality by increasing the sustainability, skill set and programming reach for southern partners to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of women in food security, rural livelihoods, HIV/AIDS reduction and freedom from violence; and empower women to actively advance women s democratic rights. In Canada, OXFAM s methodology focuses upon mobilizing Canadians to deepen their understanding and engagement, particularly on global women s issues, aid effectiveness principles and the interplay between active citizens and effective states to affect sustainable poverty reduction. Key activities include: capacity building of 44 partners to improve program delivery, through training and technical assistance on gender equality for women to secure improved livelihoods, access to credit, property and labour rights, and protection against HIV/AIDS and violence. The expected results include: • 4,211 small-holder farmers, traders and cooperative members (of which 69% or 2,902 are female) with increased sustainable incomes from local agricultural value chains; • 136 local partner staff, policy makers, practitioners and researchers with the capacity to use and replicate community asset-based entrepreneurship models to economically empower small holder farmers, particularly women; • Increased knowledge and skills of women and men in rural economic collectives to manage the production and marketing of value added products; • Improved collaboration between actors in the value chain; • Increased integration of asset-based approaches to community economic development by decision-makers and practitioners. / L objectif principal du programme est la réduction de l inégalité entre les sexes en augmentant la durabilité, les compétences et la portée de la programmation des partenaires du Sud pour fournir des améliorations tangibles dans les vies des femmes en matière de sécurité alimentaire, de moyens de subsistance en milieu rural, de réduction du VIH/sida et de prévention contre la violence, et faire en sorte que les femmes soient en mesure de faire avancer elles-mêmes leurs droits démocratiques. This program contributes to ye...ar-round food security for households in vulnerable rural farming communities in Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. It focuses on women, children under five years of age, and HIV-affected households, expanding their opportunities to engage in value-added production and marketing. Key objectives include promotion of: (1) sustainable agriculture, (2) improved nutrition, (3) local organizations serving farm communities, (4) food processing and market assessments, (5) women assuming positions of responsibility, and (6) public engagement focusing on the Canadian public. Key results expected include: (1) year-round food security and increased agricultural production, (2) improved nutritional status through adequate levels and diversity of food, (3) strengthened capabilities of community organizations to provide technical support to farmers, (4) improved market access and sustainable marketing mechanisms, (5) greater support for women and girls assuming leadership roles with increased influence in their communities and households, and (6) greater involvement of Canadians in international development. Local Partners for this program are: Ethiopia - CPAR-Ethiopia Malawi - CPAR-Malawi Tanzania - CPAR-Tanzania Uganda - CPAR-Uganda / Ce programme vise à assurer la sécurité alimentaire à l année longue dans les foyers des collectivités agricoles vulnérables en Éthiopie, au Malawi, en Tanzanie et en Ouganda. Il se concentre sur les femmes, les enfants de moins de cinq ans et les membres des foyers qui vivent avec le VIH, pour étendre leurs champs d action à s engager dans la valeur ajoutée de la production et de la mise en marché. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Tanzania, along with most Afri...can countries, has been struggling to address persistent nutritional challenges, including vitamin A and iron deficiencies. This project proposes to implement emerging technologies to improve the vitamin A status of women and children in two regions of the country: Manyara and Shinyanga. Food vouchers and fortified oil The Mennonite Economic Development Associates, through their Canadian headquarters and country office in Tanzania, will work with Tanzania's Sokoine University of Agriculture to implement the project. They will use fortified crude sunflower oil and electronic vouchers as tools to improve women's and children's health. How fortified foods and vouchers can help The Government of Tanzania announced plans to expand foods fortified with micronutrients as one of the measures to reduce micronutrient deficiencies. The project team's recent work suggests that crude sunflower oil maintains shelf life for more than 70 days when fortified with vitamin A. The project will verify shelf life findings. It will also build a sustainable business model to fortify oil at the local small- and medium-enterprise level. This will be done through an innovative electronic voucher system developed in Canada. The vouchers, transmitted through cell phone text messages, will deliver subsidies to vulnerable groups. They will target lactating mothers, while jumpstarting demand for fortified oil. Findings to improve health outcomes During the course of the project, subsidies will be systematically withdrawn to observe producers' and retailers' ability to sustain sales at market prices. The research team will track nutritional impacts through vitamin A status measurements. The project will provide evidence to support the private sector's potential to contribute to a well-nourished, food-secure society by providing sustainable access to vitamin A-fortified sunflower oil in rural Tanzania. It will also test whether electronic vouchers can promote fortified oil consumption, and whether that oil can reduce micronutrient deficiencies.

This project aims to strengthe...n maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services at the local level and reduce the number of mothers and children who die due to disease in Tanzania. The project includes improving policies and practices that promote maternal and newborn health and nutrition in a gender-responsive manner, in order to improve access to quality reproductive health, child health, and nutrition services for women and children. The project works to bring basic emergency obstetric and newborn care services and integrated management of newborn and childhood illness to 70% of health centers in underserved districts. It helps to establish comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care services in all six district health facilities in Zanzibar. As a result of this project, 80% of primary health care facilities are expected to have at least two trained MNCH health providers and all regional and targeted districts are expected to have one trained nutrition coordinator. The project also aims to connect at least 40% of districts to electronic stock management systems that enable them to monitor their supply of essential medicines, vaccines, contraceptives, and other supplies and to forecast future requirements. The project is expected to lead to skilled attendants assisting 80% of births, a decrease in chronic malnutrition among children in targeted districts, and a 50% increase in breastfeeding for infants under six months of age. The One UN Program promotes improved coordination, efficiency, and effectiveness of UN agencies at the country level by establishing one leader, one program, one budgetary framework, and one office for all the agencies. This project is part of Canada s maternal, newborn, and child health commitment. / Ce projet vise à renforcer les services de santé destinés aux mères, aux nouveau-nés et aux enfants (SMNE) au niveau local ainsi qu à réduire le nombre de mères et d enfants en Tanzanie qui décèdent des suites d une maladie. Pour ce faire, le projet vise à améliorer les politiques et les pratiques qui sont axées sur la santé et l alimentation de la mère et du nouveau-né et qui tiennent compte des sexospécificités afin d améliorer, du même coup, l accès des femmes et des enfants aux services de qualité en matière de santé génésique, de santé des enfants et de nutrition. Ce projet cherche à assurer l accès aux services obstétricaux et néonatals d urgence de base et la gestion intégrée des maladies des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans 70 % des centres de santé établis dans les districts mal desservis. Ce projet contribue à offrir des services obstétricaux et néonatals d urgence complets dans les six établissements de santé de district à Zanzibar. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Burkina Faso, au Cameroun, en Côte d Ivoire, en Guinée, au Kenya, au Mali, au Mozambique, au Niger, au Nigéria, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone et en Tanzanie.

This project aims to improve t...he nutrition of women and young children in select target populations in three or four countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The project seeks to improve nutrition by providing training in home-based agricultural production, education on nutrition, and raising awareness of behaviour change, such as promoting good breast-feeding practices. In addition, this project aims to continuously monitor the impact of these activities on child growth and nutritional status as well as the number of women adopting good breast-feeding and nutrition practices in the home. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition des femmes et des jeunes enfants dans des populations ciblées de trois ou quatre pays de l Afrique subsaharienne. Pour ce faire, on formera les populations à la production agricole à domicile, on leur enseignera les fondements de la nutrition et on les encouragera à changer leurs habitudes, par exemple en les sensibilisant aux bonnes pratiques en matière d allaitement. On fera également un suivi continuel des effets de ces activités sur la croissance et l état nutritionnel des enfants ainsi que du nombre de femmes qui adoptent de saines pratiques en matière d allaitement et de nutrition à la maison.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania. / Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. Une formation sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'agriculture durable est également donnée aux agriculteurs et agricultrices.

Nutrition plays a critical rol...e in the health of children in Africa. This research support project will provide funding to researchers to assess children s food consumption patterns and their nutritional status in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. The research will allow policymakers to address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region through informed programs and policies. The main objective is to support a project development workshop involving investigators from Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. The research team is expected to finalize a protocol for a three-year study focusing on the food consumption patterns and nutritional status of children aged 6 to 14 in primary schools in the three countries. The project will be implemented in partnership with each countries Ministries of Health and Education. Working in the three countries will provide an opportunity to document the sociocultural determinants of food consumption.More specifically, the project aims to:-refine the research questions, objectives, and overall methodological framework;-develop study instruments, including questionnaires, data forms, flow charts, and consent forms;-discuss the budget proposal and costing;-discuss dissemination strategies; and,-discuss the project s monitoring and evaluation strategy.

The main objective of the prog...ram is to reduce gender inequality by increasing the sustainability, skill set and programming reach for southern partners to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of women in food security, rural livelihoods, HIV/AIDS reduction and freedom from violence; and empower women to actively advance women s democratic rights. In Canada, OXFAM s methodology focuses upon mobilizing Canadians to deepen their understanding and engagement, particularly on global women s issues, aid effectiveness principles and the interplay between active citizens and effective states to affect sustainable poverty reduction. Key activities include: capacity building of 44 partners to improve program delivery, through training and technical assistance on gender equality for women to secure improved livelihoods, access to credit, property and labour rights, and protection against HIV/AIDS and violence. The expected results include: • 4,211 small-holder farmers, traders and cooperative members (of which 69% or 2,902 are female) with increased sustainable incomes from local agricultural value chains; • 136 local partner staff, policy makers, practitioners and researchers with the capacity to use and replicate community asset-based entrepreneurship models to economically empower small holder farmers, particularly women; • Increased knowledge and skills of women and men in rural economic collectives to manage the production and marketing of value added products; • Improved collaboration between actors in the value chain; • Increased integration of asset-based approaches to community economic development by decision-makers and practitioners. / L objectif principal du programme est la réduction de l inégalité entre les sexes en augmentant la durabilité, les compétences et la portée de la programmation des partenaires du Sud pour fournir des améliorations tangibles dans les vies des femmes en matière de sécurité alimentaire, de moyens de subsistance en milieu rural, de réduction du VIH/sida et de prévention contre la violence, et faire en sorte que les femmes soient en mesure de faire avancer elles-mêmes leurs droits démocratiques. This project aims to reduce ma...lnutrition and improve the health of vulnerable women and children living in selected areas of Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. The project addresses better infant and child feeding practices, improved access to health services, as well as enhanced hygiene practices at the household level. Activities include: training women and community health workers on infant feeding practices; training on food diversity and nutrition to improve backyard and community gardens; and developing income generating activities for women. In Ethiopia the project is expected to reach 1,200 community health workers, 500 mothers, and 5,440 children. And in Zimbabwe the project intends to reach 4,000 mothers, 4,000 children and 740 village health workers. CARE Canada is working in partnership with CARE Ethiopia and Zonal Health Offices in West and East Hararghe, Ethiopia; and CARE Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in the Mashvingo and Midlands provinces as well as Agriculture Technology and Extension Services (AGRITEX), the Government of Zimbabwe's agricultural extension service to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. / Ce projet vise à réduire la malnutrition et à améliorer la santé des femmes et des enfants vulnérables qui vivent dans des régions ciblées en Éthiopie et au Zimbabwe. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe principalement d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence. March 2015 - The UN estimates ...that 7.4 million people in Afghanistan are currently in need of humanitarian assistance. Malnutrition and food insecurity levels are especially worrying with 1.2 million children acutely malnourished and 2.2 million Afghans are considered to be severely food insecure. Access to basic health services a major concern. As a result of the internal conflict and natural disasters, 140,000 Afghans were newly displaced in 2014. In addition, 225,000 additional Pakistani refugees entered Afghanistan's eastern provinces. With DFATD's support, Action Against Hunger is providing direct nutrition assistance, technical to the national health system to deliver nutrition assistance and water, sanitation and hygiene assistance to malnourished children under the age of five and pregnant and lactating mothers. / Mars 2015 - Selon les Nations Unies, 7,4 millions de personnes ont actuellement besoin d'une aide humanitaire en Afghanistan. Les niveaux de malnutrition et d'insécurité alimentaire sont particulièrement préoccupants : 1,2 million d'enfants sont victimes de malnutrition aigue et 2,2 millions d'Afghans souffriraient d'insécurité alimentaire grave. L'accès à des services de santé de base est aussi très préoccupant. En conséquence de conflits intérieurs et de catastrophes naturelles, 140 000 Afghans s'ajoutaient au total des personnes déplacées en 2014. This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors to the Immediate Response Account, WFP is able to respond swiftly to rapid-onset emergencies and protracted crises by providing much-needed up-front funding, and to avoid major pipeline breaks in life-saving operations. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Humber Institute Health and Private Sector Development project provides 20 interns with internships in ten countries: Bangladesh, Haiti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Peru, Nicaragua and Colombia. The interns work to address development challenges in relation to local needs by contributing to private sector development and health improvement by strengthening Food Security and Nutrition programming and Water and Sanitation projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le projet en santé et développement du secteur privé de l'institut Humber permet à 20 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans dix pays, soit au Bangladesh, en Haiti, en Éthiopie, au Malawi, en Tanzanie, en Bolivie, au Burkina Faso, au Pérou, au Nicaragua et en Colombie. Les stagiaires abordent les défis du développement selon les besoins locaux en participant à la croissance du secteur privé et à l'amélioration de la santé, en renforçant la programmation en sécurité alimentaire et en nutrition, ainsi que les projets en eau et services sanitaires.

In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe principalement d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d'autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une aide alimentaire d'urgence à plus de 17 millions de personnes touchées par un conflit, l'insécurité alimentaire aiguë et l'instabilité politique dans certains pays d'Amérique centrale et d'Amérique latine, d'Asie, d'Europe, et du Moyen-Orient ainsi que des régions d'Afrique du Nord.

This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Bénin, au Burundi, à Madagascar, en Mauritanie, en Ouganda, en République centrafricaine, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone, au Soudan du Sud, en Tanzanie, au Tchad et en Zambie.

Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. The project will provide a package of homestead food production options that can be quickly implemented by government, the public, and the private sector across a Asia and in Africa. The project's focus on scalable innovations that improve the quality of diets (using strategies for vegetable production integrated with aquaculture and poultry) aligns well with Cambodia's new National Strategy for Food Security and Nutrition.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University de Terre-Neuve permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans cinq pays, soit au Cambodge, au Vietnam, aux Philippines, en Afrique du Sud et au Malawi. L'ensemble des stages vise la régie de l'environnement de manière durable. Les stages ont pour objectifs spécifiques la sécurité alimentaire, la stimulation de la croissance économique durable et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes. Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. March 2015 -Cameroon lies dire...ctly between two intensifying conflicts in the Central African Republic (CAR) and in Nigeria. In 2015, Cameroon will host a total of 312,000 refugees of which 242,000 come from CAR and 70,000 from Nigeria. Over half of the refugees are living with local host communities or in makeshift sites close to both borders. In 2014, violence purported by Boko Haram also caused the internal displacement of some 40,000 Cameroonians and more violence is expected. Cameroon also suffers from food insecurity, particularly in the Eastern, Northern, Adamawa and far Northern parts of the country. 75% of CAR and Nigerian refugees suffer from malnutrition, while 20% experience severe food malnutrition . With DFATD support, Plan International Canada is addressing the urgent nutritional needs of over 122,000 Central African and Nigerians refugees and vulnerable host communities in the east and far North regions of Cameroon. Activities include: (1) screening, referral and treatment of malnourished children under 5 years old and pregnant and lactating women; (2) provision of aqua tabs and chlorine for safe drinking water; and, (3) provision of seeds and tools.

This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. This project is part of DFATD'...s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. The Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean initiative offers 16 internships for Aboriginals in three countries (Burkina Faso, Senegal and Equator) in the fields targeted by the eight local partners, namely ancestral knowledge, maternal health and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, valorisation and transformation of non-timber forest products, adaptation to climate change, environmental education, HIV/AIDS prevention, family planning and reproductive health. The project contributes to increasing male and female Aboriginal youth's employability, providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment or pursue their studies. / Ce projet fait partie de l'initiative des Stages internationaux pour les jeunes Autochtones (SIJA) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD). Ces stages visent à accroitre la sensibilisation, l'engagement et la participation des jeunes Autochtones à l'égard du développement international, tout en leur donnant la chance d'élargir leurs compétences professionnelles. L'initiative du Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean permet l'envoi de 16 stagiaires Autochtones dans trois pays (Burkina Faso, Sénégal et Équateur) dans les domaines ciblés par huit partenaires locaux. Les secteurs d'interventions sont la valorisation des savoirs ancestraux, la santé maternelle et la nutrition, l'agriculture durable, la valorisation et la transformation des produits forestiers non-ligneux, l'adaptation aux changements climatiques, l'éducation relative à l'environnement, la prévention du VIH-Sida, la planification familiale et la santé reproductive. Le projet contribuera à augmenter l'employabilité des jeunes Autochtones femmes et homes, en leur permettant de développer des compétences et des connaissances qui les prépareront à obtenir un emploi ou à poursuivre leurs études.

This project will provide evid...ence that offers important insight into the connection between migration, gender, and forest dependence in rural Ethiopia. Need for labour migration, forest resources While most rural households rely on agriculture for their livelihood, many poor households in developing countries use labour migration and forest resources to improve their welfare. Existing research offers simplistic assumptions that migration invariably leads to deforestation in the tropics, and that forest recovery is always a consequence of people leaving rural areas. These assumptions are being questioned, particularly as researchers analyze and document the complex factors that influence migration outcomes. As a result, it is not clear whether labour migration complements, or serves as a substitute, for forest product extraction by migrant-sending households. Furthermore, whether and how labour migration influences intra-household gender relations, food security, and forest dependence at the places of origin is unclear. Insights into the effects on households The Ethiopian Economic Association/Ethiopian Economic Policy Research Institute (EEA-EEPRI) will collaborate with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) on this project. They will explore the effects of migration and remittances on household forest dependence, food security, and intra-household gender division of work. Researchers will investigate the degree to which those effects vary across different migration types (for example, domestic versus international migration, and rural versus urban) and across socio-economic groups and locations. A better understanding of these issues is of crucial importance in Ethiopia for a number of reasons. The government has formulated and implemented specific policies on gender, forestry, and food security. However, the ways in which rural out-migration is influencing the achievement of gender equity, forest conservation, and rural food security goals are not well understood. This research will aim to propose options for policymakers and development partners. Project leadership This project is made possible through the Think Tank Initiative (TTI). TTI is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy.

This project aims to improve m...aternal, infant and child nutrition, reduce stunting of children under the age of five, and improve the nutritional status of pregnant women. Canada's support would directly benefit 85,500 people including boys, girls, men, women, local authorities and community leaders. Despite recent progress, malnutrition remains a serious problem in Ethiopia, and many children and women do not regularly have enough nutritious food to keep them healthy. Activities include: (1) providing training on infant and young children's feeding practices, distributing material on proper nutrition as well as good water and sanitation practices; (2) supporting the development of school and household fruit and vegetable gardens; (3) increasing access to water through the mapping of existing water points and support for repair and maintenance; and (4) training on the importance of gender equality in order to achieve nutrition improvements. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants, à réduire les retards dans la croissance des enfants de moins de cinq ans et à renforcer le bilan nutritionnel des femmes enceintes. Le soutien offert par le Canada profiterait directement à 85 500 personnes, y compris des garçons, des filles, des hommes, des femmes, des autorités locales et des dirigeants communautaires. Malgré les progrès réalisés récemment, la malnutrition demeure un problème grave en Éthiopie et bon nombre d'enfants et de femmes n'ont pas assez d'aliments nutritifs régulièrement pour rester en santé. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) de la formation sur les pratiques d'alimentation des bébés et des jeunes enfants, la distribution de documents sur une nutrition appropriée ainsi que de bonnes pratiques d'approvisionnement en eau et d'assainissement; 2) un soutien à l'aménagement de jardins de fruits et de légumes à l'école et à la maison; 3) l'élargissement de l'accès à un approvisionnement en eau grâce à la cartographie des points d'eaux existants et au soutien relativement aux réparations et à l'entretien; 4) une formation sur l'importance de l'égalité entre les sexes afin d'améliorer la nutrition.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d'autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une aide alimentaire d'urgence à plus de 36 millions de personnes touchées par un conflit, l'insécurité alimentaire aiguë et l'instabilité politique dans certains pays d'Afrique.
