This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe principalement d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d'autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une aide alimentaire d'urgence à plus de 17 millions de personnes touchées par un conflit, l'insécurité alimentaire aiguë et l'instabilité politique dans certains pays d'Amérique centrale et d'Amérique latine, d'Asie, d'Europe, et du Moyen-Orient ainsi que des régions d'Afrique du Nord.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.Solidarity Union Cooperation's (SUCO) initiative provides 30 interns with the opportunity to work in four countries: Senegal, Peru, Honduras and Nicaragua. Interns work directly with 18 local partners through market gardening, marketing, education, business management, nutrition, rural entrepreneurship, social marketing, and organizational development activities./Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie.L'initiative de Solidarité Union Coopération (SUCO) affecte 30 stagiaires répartis dans quatre pays : Sénégal, Pérou, Honduras et Nicaragua. Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international. Pour assurer l'avenir des jeunes et des collectivités, l'initiative internationale de Cuso International offre 40 stages de deux ans à l'intention des Canadiens et Canadiennes. Les stagiaires travaillent au Pérou, en Guyane, au Cameroun, au Nicaragua et au Laos, dans les domaines de la stimulation de la croissance économique durable, l'augmentation de la sécurité alimentaire et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et de jeunes. Les partenaires locaux ont des compétences plus efficaces en matière d'emploi, d'entrepreneuriat et de compétences de vie, pour appuyer les organisations communautaires dans leur transition à développer des coopératives fonctionnelles, pour appuyer la participation des femmes et des jeunes aux chaines de valeur agricoles, et pour aider à augmenter l'accès à des services-conseils agricoles dans les collectivités rurales.

Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University de Terre-Neuve permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans cinq pays, soit au Cambodge, au Vietnam, aux Philippines, en Afrique du Sud et au Malawi. L'ensemble des stages vise la régie de l'environnement de manière durable. Les stages ont pour objectifs spécifiques la sécurité alimentaire, la stimulation de la croissance économique durable et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes. Les autres domaines de concentration sont la promotion de la bonne gouvernance par l'entremise des institutions du secteur public; l'appui à la croissance du secteur privé en créant un environnement favorable et en favorisant l'entrepreneuriat; et l'amélioration des résultats en matière de santé en renforçant la sécurité alimentaire et l'éducation.

March 2015 - Despite a peace a...greement signed in October 2012 between the government and separatist rebels, protracted conflict continues on Mindanao Island, in the Philippines, where over 150,000 people have died since fighting began in the late 1960s. The condition of people living in the conflict-affected areas of Mindanao remains difficult. This situation was further exacerbated in September 2013 when fighting broke out in Zamboanga City between rebel factions and the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The conflict displaced more than 120,000 people during its height, left over 200 dead and as many as 10,000 homes destroyed. Despite a quick end to hostilities, approximately 66,000 people remain displaced in Zamboanga City. With DFATD's support, Action Against Hunger (ACF) is helping to improve the nutritional and emergency food status of populations displaced by the conflict in Zamboanga City. Project activities include: (1) the screening and treating of severe acute malnutrition of 2,916 displaced children between 6 - 59 months; (2) providing training and counseling in infant and young child feeding practices to 1,470 displaced mothers and fathers; and (3) providing cash grants to meet the emergency food and nutrition needs of 550 families with severely acute malnourished children. / Mars 2015 - Malgré la signature d'un accord de paix en octobre 2012, entre le gouvernement et les rebelles séparatistes, un conflit prolongé se poursuit sur l'ile de Mindanao, aux Philippines, où plus de 150 000 personnes sont mortes depuis le début des combats dans les années 1960. Les conditions de vie des personnes vivant dans les zones touchées restent difficiles. Cette situation s'est aggravée en septembre 2013, par suite d'affrontements dans la ville de Zamboanga entre des factions rebelles et les Forces armées des Philippines. Au plus fort des combats, qui ont fait plus de 200 morts et détruit 10 000 habitations, 120 000 personnes ont été forcées de fuir. Malgré la fin rapide des hostilités, environ 66 000 personnes sont toujours déplacées à Zamboanga City. Avec le soutien du MAECD, l'Action Contre la Faim (ACF) contribue à améliorer l'aide nutritionnelle et alimentaire d'urgence au profit des populations déplacées par le conflit à Zamboanga City. Pami les activités du projet : 1) le dépistage et le traitement de la malnutrition aiguë sévère au profit de 2 916 enfants déplacés âgés de 6 à 59 mois; 2) de la formation et des conseils pratiques sur l'alimentation des nourrissons et des jeunes enfants, au profit de 1 470 mères et pères déplacés; 3) l'octroi de subventions en espèces pour répondre aux besoins alimentaires et nutritionnels d'urgence de 550 familles ayant des enfants souffrant de malnutrition aiguë sévère.

This project aims at improving... the nutritional security of populations living in the Kolda and Kédougou regions by focussing on preventing new cases of malnutrition, especially amongst women and young children. These regions show malnutrition rates significantly higher than the national average, resulting in child mortality rates twice as high as the national average. The project seeks to reduce malnutrition by adopting an integrated approach consisting of the following three components: 1) promote better nutrition practices for vulnerable populations; 2) support communities in the production of more nutritious food; 3) strengthen the capacity of the government at the local, regional and national levels to deliver nutrition or nutrition-sensitive programmes. Project activities include: 1) train and provide equipment to 1,775 health workers to deliver behaviour change communication messages on appropriate nutritional practices to approximately 35,000 influential in household food consumption decision-making (mainly women); 2) support the development and delivery of community services related to maternal and child nutrition to 31,000 pregnant and lactating women and approximately 50,500 children under five; 3) implement community initiatives to improve the production and distribution of nutrient-rich food by 30,000 households, including training on good agricultural practices and support to the development of local entrepreneurship; 4) train and provide equipment to local and regional government structures leading to a better inclusion of nutrition issues in the design, implementation, coordination and monitoring of development plans. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité nutritionnelle des populations vivant dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou en mettant l'accent sur la prévention des nouveaux cas de malnutrition, surtout chez les femmes et les jeunes enfants. Les régions de Kolda et Kédougou présentent des taux de malnutrition nettement plus élevés que la moyenne nationale, contribuant à des taux de mortalité infantile deux fois plus élevés que de la moyenne nationale. Le projet cherche à réduire ces taux en utilisant une approche intégrée, composée de trois volets : 1) la promotion de meilleures pratiques nutritionnelles auprès des populations vulnérables; 2) un appui aux collectivités dans la production d'aliments plus nutritifs; 3) le renforcement des capacités des instances gouvernementales aux niveaux local, régional et national à livrer des programmes de nutrition ou qui intègrent la nutrition. The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.Solidarity Union Cooperation's (SUCO) initiative provides 30 interns with the opportunity to work in four countries: Senegal, Peru, Honduras and Nicaragua. Ce projet d'assistance technique contribue au renforcement des capacités des administrations concernées en ciblant notamment le renforcement des fonctions clés de gestion dont le pilotage, la planification, la gestion des ressources humaines et financières, la passation des marchés, le suivi-évaluation, le contrôle interne et la vérification, en plus de fournir des expertises techniques en appui à l'élaboration et la mise en œuvre des politiques et programmes sectoriels.Parmi les activités du projet : 1) Développer et mettre en place des outils afin d'améliorer l'efficacité, l'efficience, la transparence et la reddition des comptes des institutions étatiques dans la mise en œuvre et le suivi-évaluation des politiques et stratégies sectorielles; 2) Fournir des appuis-conseils et de la formation afin de renforcer les capacités de gestion des institutions étatiques entre autres en matière de ressources financières et humaines et de passation des marchés au niveau central et déconcentré; 3) Fournir du matériel et des équipements en lien avec les initiatives de renforcement des capacités des institutions étatiques ciblées; 4) Réaliser des diagnostics, analyses, études afin de contribuer à la mise en œuvre efficace des politiques et programmes dans les secteurs de l'agriculture et de l'extractif; 5) Offrir des appui-conseils dans différents domaines en matière, d'égalité entre les sexes, de bonne gouvernance, d'environnement et de responsabilité sociale des entreprises (RSE).

This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting.This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d'autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une aide alimentaire d'urgence à plus de 36 millions de personnes touchées par un conflit, l'insécurité alimentaire aiguë et l'instabilité politique dans certains pays d'Afrique.

Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. The interns work to address development challenges in relation to local needs by contributing to private sector development and health improvement by strengthening Food Security and Nutrition programming and Water and Sanitation projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Humber Institute Health and Private Sector Development project provides 20 interns with internships in ten countries: Bangladesh, Haiti, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Peru, Nicaragua and Colombia. The interns work to address development challenges in relation to local needs by contributing to private sector development and health improvement by strengthening Food Security and Nutrition programming and Water and Sanitation projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le projet en santé et développement du secteur privé de l'institut Humber permet à 20 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans dix pays, soit au Bangladesh, en Haiti, en Éthiopie, au Malawi, en Tanzanie, en Bolivie, au Burkina Faso, au Pérou, au Nicaragua et en Colombie. Les stagiaires abordent les défis du développement selon les besoins locaux en participant à la croissance du secteur privé et à l'amélioration de la santé, en renforçant la programmation en sécurité alimentaire et en nutrition, ainsi que les projets en eau et services sanitaires.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors to the Immediate Response Account, WFP is able to respond swiftly to rapid-onset emergencies and protracted crises by providing much-needed up-front funding, and to avoid major pipeline breaks in life-saving operations. Project activities include: (1) providing food assistance; (2) conducting assessments; (3) supporting local and regional markets; (4) providing supplementary feeding for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and female-headed households; and (5) improving logistical and telecommunications support to transport food on ships, planes, helicopters and trucks, to crisis zones. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d'autres donateurs en faveur du Compte d'interventions immédiates, le PAM peut répondre rapidement aux situations d'urgence soudaines et aux crises prolongées en offrant un financement initial nécessaire, et éviter les importantes ruptures d'approvisionnement au cours des opérations visant à sauver des vies. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) offrir une assistance alimentaire; 2) mener des évaluations; 3) appuyer les marchés locaux et régionaux; 4) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux groupes vulnérables tels que les enfants, les femmes enceintes et celles qui allaitent, et les ménages dirigés par une femme; 5) améliorer le soutien logistique et aux télécommunications pour le transport d'aliments par bateau, hélicoptère et camion vers les zones de crise.

In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail. This project aims to promote t...he integration of micronutrients into existing country systems along the continuum of care. It is designed to work in partnership with others to address maternal, newborn and child health through providing essential health and nutrition services. Working through existing health systems to identify optimal delivery mechanisms, the Micronutrient Initiative (MI) aims to provide support to strengthen those systems that need it most. The objective is to deliver therapeutic zinc in conjunction with oral rehydration therapy to reduce child mortality and illness due to diarrhea; to deliver vitamin A supplements to reduce child mortality; to increase production of ready-to-use therapeutic foods to treat cases of severe acute malnutrition; and to deliver iron and folic acid to avoid anaemia at term among pregnant women. Working with other partners, MI also aims to implement initiatives to improve antenatal care, care at birth, and postpartum and newborn care. / Ce projet vise à promouvoir l'intégration des micronutriments dans les systèmes nationaux existants, tout en assurant la continuité des soins. Il est conçu pour travailler en partenariats afin de se pencher sur les enjeux liés à la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants, en fournissant des services essentiels en matière de santé et de nutrition. L'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) profite des systèmes de santé existants pour déterminer les mécanismes optimisés de prestation des soins et vise à aider au renforcement des systèmes les plus déficients. L'objectif est de fournir un traitement au zinc thérapeutique en combinaison avec un traitement de réhydratation par voie orale afin de réduire la mortalité infantile et les maladies diarrhéiques; de fournir des suppléments de vitamine A afin de réduire la mortalité infantile; d'accroitre la production d'aliments thérapeutiques prêts à l'emploi afin de traiter les cas de malnutrition aiguë; de fournir des suppléments de fer et d'acide folique afin d'éviter les problèmes d'anémie, à terme, chez les femmes enceintes. L'IM vise également à mettre en oeuvre, avec l'aide d'autres partenaires, des initiatives pour améliorer les soins prénataux, les soins à l'accouchement, les soins postnataux et les soins aux nouveau-nés.

The project aims to increase a...gricultural production and food security in two counties of Warrap State through improved, increased and diversified food production (agriculture and fishing), as well as by building the productive asset base of food insecure households (e.g. through the distribution of livestock, such as goats and chickens). Activities include: 1) women farmer-to-women farmer training; 2) increasing and diversifying vegetable production during seasonal dry periods through training; 3) distributing small livestock and poultry; and 4) developing small multi-purpose ponds for irrigation and to sustain livestock. / Ce projet vise à accroitre la production agricole et la sécurité alimentaire dans deux comtés l'État de Warrap grâce à l'amélioration, à l'augmentation et à la diversification de la production alimentaire (agriculture et pêche) et au renforcement des actifs productifs des ménages touchés par l'insécurité alimentaire (p. ex. au moyen de la distribution d'animaux d'élevage, tels que des chèvres et des poulets). March 2015 - Nearly four years... since independence, internal conflict continues to devastate the lives of millions of people in South Sudan. On December 2013, violence broke out in Juba, South Sudan's capital, and quickly spread throughout the country. The humanitarian consequences of the ongoing crisis include: massive population displacement; high mortality rates; increasing food insecurity; disrupted livelihoods; and, wide-scale malnutrition. Over 1.5 million people are internally displaced within the country, over 103,000 individuals are seeking physical protection in UN bases and over 500,000 South Sudanese have fled the country. Agricultural production is disrupted, and essential basic services, such as safe drinking water, schools, and medical facilities have been shut down or destroyed in the fighting. With DFATD's support, World Vision Canada is providing emergency water, sanitation and hygiene services to 48,912 conflict-affected people in Upper Nile state. Project activities include: (1) establishing four new water points in four communities, benefitting 29,528 people and establishing four water committees; (2) constructing ten blocks of institutional latrines in two internally displaced persons settlements, benefitting over 5,000 people; (3) training 20 community hygiene promoters and conducting eight sanitation and hygiene trainings in four locations;(4) distributing relief items (hygiene kits) to 1,500 women and girls; and (5) providing supplemental feeding to 8,495 children under the age of five and 3,384 malnourished pregnant or lactating women. / Mars 2015 - Près de quatre ans après l'indépendance, le conflit interne continue de détruire la vie de millions de personnes au Soudan du Sud. En décembre 2013, la violence éclate à Djouba, la capitale du Soudan du Sud, et se propage rapidement dans tout le pays. Parmi les conséquences humanitaires de la crise en cours : déplacements massifs de population, taux élevés de mortalité; hausse de l'insécurité alimentaire; moyens de subsistance compromis; et malnutrition répandue. Plus de 1,5 million de personnes sont déplacées à l'intérieur de leur pays; plus de 103 000 personnes sont en quête d'une protection physique dans les bases des Nations Unies et plus de 500 000 Sud-Soudanais ont fui le pays. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Bénin, au Burundi, à Madagascar, en Mauritanie, en Ouganda, en République centrafricaine, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone, au Soudan du Sud, en Tanzanie, au Tchad et en Zambie.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe avant tout d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail. March 2015 - Ongoing conflicts... in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, as well as an influx of refugees from South Sudan, have contributed to a significant deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan. Some 6.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, including 3.1 million internally displaced people, 700,000 refugees and asylum seekers, 1.2 million malnourished children under the age of five, and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Food security and malnutrition continue to be priority sectors for humanitarian assistance, as well as health and sanitation needs. With DFATD's support, Save the Children Canada is providing emergency food, water, sanitation and hygiene services to over 127,000 conflict-affected people in North and South Kordofan, as well as Blue Nile State. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating three water yards benefitting 9,000 people, improving five hand-dug wells, benefitting 2,000 people, and constructing eight waste water collections points, benefitting 3,200 people; (2) providing training to 56 community members to create eight water committees to manage water points; (3) rehabilitating 40 latrines at nutrition and community centres and providing 250 sets of latrine and sanitary tools; (4) providing training and awareness on infant and young child feeding through 100 nutrition education sessions, targeting 6,820 mothers and caretakers in 20 communities as well as providing therapeutic supplemental feeding to 5,070 people with moderate acute malnutrition; and (5) providing agricultural inputs and cash grants to increase access and availability of diversified food. / Mars 2015 - Les conflits permanents dans les États du Darfour, du Sud-Kordofan et du Nil bleu, ainsi que l'afflux de réfugiés du Soudan du Sud, ont contribué à une détérioration importante de la situation humanitaire au Soudan. Quelque 6,6 millions de personnes ont besoin d'aide humanitaire, dont 3,1 millions de personnes déplacées à l'intérieur de leur pays, 700 000 réfugiés et demandeurs d'asile, 1,2 million d'enfants de moins de cinq ans souffrant de malnutrition, et 1,6 million de personnes en situation d'insécurité alimentaire. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. This project will contribute t...o reducing food insecurity and chronic malnutrition in three provinces of northern Vietnam: La¿o Cai, Lai Cha¿u, and Ha¿ Giang. The project team will scale up successful initiatives that use locally grown crops for ready-to-use therapeutic foods and fortified complementary foods. Nourishment and better health Therapeutic foods are energy-dense, micronutrient-enriched pastes or bars designed to provide high-density nutrition for severely undernourished children. Complementary foods are designed for the diets of all children between the ages of 6 to 24 months. Researchers from the National Institute of Nutrition, Vietnam and Canada's Ryerson University will use scaling up strategies to -procure crops directly from women farmers in rural Vietnam -establish decentralized production of fortified complementary foods and therapeutic foods in small-scale food processing facilities -distribute the products using a supply chain that includes public health providers (such as the Ministry of Health and international organizations) and commercial channels The project aims to build on the experience of NINFoods, a business-oriented subsidiary of the National Institute of Nutrition. The company successfully standardized the production of a high-energy nutritious bar for integrated management of acute malnutrition. Better nutrition by region Initially, the project team will establish and scale up production of region-specific fortified complementary foods by creating decentralized food production facilities in three rural regions of northern Vietnam. They will then produce ready-to-use therapeutic foods. The Vietnam Women's Union will act as the main liaison with the women farmers who will receive training on agro-ecological practices, post-harvest handling, food safety, and how to form producer associations. By the end of 28 months, the complementary and therapeutic foods from the decentralized facilities will benefit an estimated 15,000 malnourished children. Three nutrition-counselling centres established through the project will serve as product distribution points. Together, they will help more than 1,500 mothers annually with counselling on child feeding practices. Project funding This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), an IDRC program undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada).

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University de Terre-Neuve permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans cinq pays, soit au Cambodge, au Vietnam, aux Philippines, en Afrique du Sud et au Malawi. L'ensemble des stages vise la régie de l'environnement de manière durable. Les stages ont pour objectifs spécifiques la sécurité alimentaire, la stimulation de la croissance économique durable et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes. Les autres domaines de concentration sont la promotion de la bonne gouvernance par l'entremise des institutions du secteur public; l'appui à la croissance du secteur privé en créant un environnement favorable et en favorisant l'entrepreneuriat; et l'amélioration des résultats en matière de santé en renforçant la sécurité alimentaire et l'éducation.

It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. October 2015 - Since the escal...ation of the conflict in March 2015, the humanitarian situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate. More than 13 million people depend on food assistance for their survival; of these, 6 million have reached emergency levels of food insecurity and require immediate assistance. There are currently 1.3 million children suffering from malnutrition, compared to 690,000 children before the deterioration of the crisis. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the World Food Programme is helping to meet the emergency food needs of up to 4 million conflict-affected people in Yemen. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency food assistance to conflict-affected people; and, (2) expanding coverage of nutrition interventions to prevent and treat malnutrition in children under five years old.

With the support of DFATD and other donors, UNICEF is providing urgent life-saving, preventative and therapeutic nutrition services to malnourished girls and boys as well as to pregnant and lactating women in the governorates of Aden, Lahj, Shabwa, Al Dhale and Abyan. Activities will include: (1) treating 20,000 severely malnourished children; (2) providing food supplements to 3,000 pregnant and lactating women; (3) providing preventive treatment to 41,250 children; and, (4) training 400 health workers on management of acute malnutrition and 800 community health volunteers on screening and referral of malnourished children for treatment.

This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Benin, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l'entremise d'activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d'offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n'ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l'apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l'immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l'enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d'améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d'assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Bénin, au Burundi, à Madagascar, en Mauritanie, en Ouganda, en République centrafricaine, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone, au Soudan du Sud, en Tanzanie, au Tchad et en Zambie.

A survey conducted found that ...60% of households surveyed in Kandahar City lacked access to safe drinking water with a correspondingly high 89% incidence of diarrhea in children under five. In addition, the 2013 National Nutrition Survey (NNS) reported a Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate for Kandahar province at 13.5%, compared to the national average of 9.5%. The main priority for Bamyan province is “increased access to clean water and sanitation, especially in schools and health clinics, to protect the health of children and mothers†(UNICEF publication). A Medair assessment in 2013 confirmed that many families lack access to safe drinking water, have poor hygiene knowledge and non-existing or inadequate sanitation. Recurring seasonal diarrhea was observed during summer months, particularly in children under five. The food gap in these areas in a normal year is six months and in many years this is extended due to drought and crop losses. This project focuses on the provision of life-saving services for the identification and treatment of acute malnutrition in children under five (for example, monthly monitoring and supervision of malnutrition and distribution of ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat severe cases of malnutrition) in Kandahar Province and the prevention of malnutrition in Bamyan and Wardak. Complementing the delivery of these emergency services in Kandahar, this intervention aims to improve dietary diversity, enhance food security, ensure access to clean water, and provide hygiene education and access to essential sanitation facilities in all three provinces. This initiative aims to use a holistic approach, addressing the improvement of infant and young child feeding practices, nutrition for pregnant and lactating women, dietary diversity and family food preparation, early care seeking for common causes of under-five morbidity and mortality, and hygiene and sanitation promotion. Activities include: providing training in nutrition, dietary diversity, family food preparation; providing training in establishment and maintenance of kitchen gardening; distribution of vegetable seeds; equipping and providing ongoing support and supervision for the treatment of the common coexisting childhood illnesses in children; building or rehabilitating water points and latrines for communities, schools, and clinics, and providing training on improved hygiene and sanitation. The project proposes to benefit 232,490 women, men, girls and boys. Mennonite Central Committee Canada is working with Medair to implement this project. This project will examine this challenge through a book featuring the latest research and results. It aims to expand global conversations on gender and food security.Supporting women as producers and caretakersTo maximize the impact of agricultural development on food security, governments and communities must enhance women's roles as agricultural producers and primary caretakers for their families. Phase 1 of the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund's (CIFSRF) emphasized integrating gender considerations into food security research. Activities included assessing the extent of gender integration in projects and holding a workshop to strengthen gender analysis and integration, and monitoring skills. Sharing findings on gender and food securityIDRC held a writeshop in Edmonton during the International Food Security Dialogue to document gender results from CIFSRF projects. An editorial team from IDRC and the University of Alberta worked with authors to refine their papers. Participants completed 13 papers and chapters, which will be published in book format. This will make the findings more widely accessible to researchers, academics, policymakers, and development practitioners.Evidence from Africa, Asia, and Latin AmericaThe book provides empirical evidence and explores the gendered dimensions of food security. Drawing on studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, it -investigates how food security and gender inequity are conceptualized within interventions -assesses the impacts and outcomes of gender-responsive programs on food security and gender equity-addresses diverse approaches to gender research and practice New perspectives for a growing fieldThe papers draw on diverse theoretical perspectives, including transformative learning, feminist theory, deliberative democracy (where deliberation is central to decision-making), and technology adoption. The collection makes an important contribution to the growing literature on the challenges of gender equity in agricultural production.

The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). Pendant la première phase, GDC verse de petites subventions aux innovateurs afin qu'ils puissent faire de la recherche et formuler des idées prometteuses et novatrices pour régler les problèmes liés à la SMNE. La seconde phase comprend la mise à l'essai des innovations, l'établissement de partenariats stratégiques, l'obtention de fonds et de savoir-faire du secteur privé ainsi que la conception de plans d'affaires et de marketing afin de poursuivre le perfectionnement. Au cours de cette phase, des fonds sont accordés à des innovateurs canadiens et de pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire qui ont présenté leurs travaux en matière d'innovation et dont les projets sont prêts à être utilisés par le secteur privé, des organisations internationales et les gouvernements de pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire. Plus de 300 innovations pendant la première phase et jusqu'à 100 innovations pendant la seconde phase seront mises en oeuvre sur 10 ans.

This project aims to implement... a global advocacy initiative to highlight and prioritize girls' and women's health, rights and wellbeing, with a particular focus on maternal, newborn and adolescent health, nutrition and family planning. Project activities include support to: (1) organizing the Girl Power in Play Symposium (Ottawa, June 18-19, 2015); (2) organizing the 2016 Women Deliver Conference, which is the world's largest global convening to focus on the health, rights and well-being of girls and women; and (3) organizing a thematic meeting on nutrition and 4) country-level consultations on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
