As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. They work with five other Canadian universities, together with researchers and municipal governments in seven cities in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.How this research will make a differenceThe research team will analyze formal and informal urban food systems in the partner cities, how they interact, how they are governed, and their respective contribution to food security and inclusive growth.This project will:-provide evidence of entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities in the urban informal food system;-identify potential opportunities for women and youth to be incorporated as entrepreneurs and employees with decent jobs;-deliver knowledge through workshops, training, and consultations to inform policy and practice at the municipal level on enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the informal food economy;-support 24 students (one post-doctoral, three PhD and 20 master's students) to develop research and collaborate with their Canadian peers; and-offer six policy workshops on urban food security and inclusive growth.The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding this project. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Burkina Faso, au Cameroun, en Côte d Ivoire, en Guinée, au Kenya, au Mali, au Mozambique, au Niger, au Nigéria, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone et en Tanzanie.

This project aims to contribut...e to a reduction in maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality by using an integrated approach to address the health service and nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in Taita Taveta County in Eastern Kenya. Reaching 3,000 pregnant women and their families, the project is focused on improving pregnant women' critical nutrition status; improving the quality of health services for pregnant women and infants; and transferring knowledge on program design and implementation. Activities include: local consultations to determine critical nutrition and maternal, newborn and child health needs; community education and mobilization activities; training health care providers; and providing a critical nutrition package for women of reproductive age, pregnant and post-partum women and infants. The University of Manitoba is working in partnership with Pwani Christian Community Services and the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) of Kenya to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum CIDA contribution to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Ce projet contribue à la réduction du taux de mortalité des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants en utilisant une approche intégrée pour répondre aux besoins en services de santé et de nutrition des populations vulnérables du comté oriental Taita Taveta au Kenya. Le projet atteint 3 000 femmes enceintes et leurs familles en se concentrant sur l'amélioration de l'état alimentaire critique pour les femmes enceintes, et l'amélioration de services de qualité pour les femmes enceintes et les nouveau-nés, ainsi que le transfert de connaissances en matière de conception et de mise en oeuvre de programmes. Les activités comprennent des consultations locales pour déterminer les besoins importants de nutrition et de santé pour les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants. This project seeks to save the... lives of women, newborns and children in Kenya and Liberia. The Canadian Red Cross Society and its partners in Kenya and Liberia work with the Ministries of Health in those countries to deliver a program in Integrated Community Case Management (iCCM), an approach to improve the health of pregnant women, newborns and children in 44 hard-to access rural communities. The project expects to reach 66,000 beneficiaries, including 12,000 children under five years old and 26,000 women of childbearing age in West Pokot District in Kenya and Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Gedeh Counties in Liberia. Ministry of Health-supervised community health workers and volunteers are selected by Community Health Committees and trained in community based health and first aid, in order to treat and refer sick children, and ensure community-level access to life-saving medications and basic health services. / Ce projet vise à sauver la vie des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants au Kenya et au Libéria. La Société canadienne de la Croix-Rouge et ses partenaires au Kenya et au Libéria collaborent avec les ministères de la Santé de ces pays pour mettre en oeuvre un programme de prise en charge intégrée des cas dans la communauté (PEC-C), une approche visant à améliorer la santé des femmes enceintes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans 44 collectivités rurales difficiles d accès. Il est attendu que le projet rejoigne 66 000 personnes, dont 12 000 enfants de moins de cinq ans et 26 000 femmes en âge de procréer, dans le district de West Pokot au Kenya, et dans les comtés de Bomi, de Gbarpolu et de Grand Gedeh au Libéria. Des bénévoles et travailleurs de la santé communautaire supervisés par le ministère de la Santé sont sélectionnés par les comités de santé communautaire et formés aux soins de santé communautaire de base et aux premiers soins. Ces derniers peuvent ainsi traiter les enfants malades ou les diriger vers d autres centres de soins et garantir l accès des collectivités à des médicaments essentiels et à des services de soins de santé de base.

This project (Maziko) aims to ...benefit more than 236,000 women, with a focus on pregnant and lactating women and girls and boys in two districts where stunting and malnutrition are widespread. Addressing under-five child stunting head-on, the project takes an integrated approach to preventing and treating malnutrition by addressing behaviour change in the areas of feeding practices, agricultural production, water, sanitation and hygiene. The project also focuses on providing access to programs at the district and community level. The Maziko Project uses a model of behaviour change that has been proven to reach large numbers of households while strengthening community-based referral to health services. / Ce projet (Maziko) vise à aider plus de 236 000 femmes, et plus particulìèrement les femmes enceintes et allaitantes, ainsi que les filles et les garçons, dans deux districts où les retards de croissance et la malnutrition sont répandus. Le projet, qui attaque de front le problème du retard de la croissance chez les enfants de moins de cinq ans, adopte une approche intégrée de prévention et de traitement de la malnutrition au niveau du district et au niveau communautaire afin de favoriser des changements dans les comportements alimentaires, la production agricole, l'approvisionnement en eau, l'assainissement et l'hygiène. Le projet Maziko se fonde sur un modèle de changement des comportements ayant fait ses preuves pour rejoindre un grand nombre de ménages, tout en renforçant les capacités communautaires en matière d'aiguillage vers les services de santé.

This project seeks to save the... lives of 17,500 girls and boys under five by helping to identify and treat severe acute malnutrition, a major cause of death and illness in children. The project supports the scale-up of Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) services in Malawi. CMAM is a globally accepted system for treating severe acute malnutrition that involves early detection through community screening, treatment of most cases on an out-patient basis using ready-to-use therapeutic foods, and referral of complicated cases to specialized in-patient care. The project aims to target critical gaps in the scale-up of CMAM in Malawi identified by UNICEF in collaboration with Malawi s Ministry of Health. The project also seeks to support innovative measures that can be taken in the short term to improve the capacity of Malawi s Ministry of Health to effectively and sustainably manage CMAM as a public health program. Some project activities include: (1) procuring 220 metric tonnes of ready-to-use therapeutic food; (2) training health workers, including administrators, front-line health workers and community volunteers and leaders, in the new World Health Organization guidelines for identifying severe acute malnutrition; (3) ensuring a more effective and timely supply of ready-to-use therapeutic foods; and (4) providing technical assistance and training to help the Malawi Ministry of Health to produce the first, fully costed five-year forward operating plan for CMAM. / Ce projet vise à sauver la vie de 17 500 filles et garçons de moins de cinq ans en aidant à identifier et traiter la malnutrition aiguë sévère, une cause majeure de décès et de maladie chez les enfants. Le projet appuie la mise à l échelle de la gestion de la malnutrition aiguë des services communautaires au Malawi (CMAM). CMAM est un système accepté globalement pour le traitement de la malnutrition aiguë sévère qui implique le dépistage rapide au sein de la communauté, le traitement de la plupart des cas sur une base externe, avec des aliments thérapeutiques prêts à l emploi, et la référence des cas compliqués (nécéssitant des soins spécialisés en milieu hospitalier). Le projet vise à cibler les lacunes critiques dans la mise à l échelle du CMAM au Malawi, identifié par l UNICEF et en collaboration avec le ministère de la Santé du Malawi. This project seeks to save the... lives of 17,500 girls and boys under five by helping to identify and treat severe acute malnutrition, a major cause of death and illness in children. The project supports the scale-up of Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) services in Malawi. CMAM is a globally accepted system for treating severe acute malnutrition that involves early detection through community screening, treatment of most cases on an out-patient basis using ready-to-use therapeutic foods, and referral of complicated cases to specialized in-patient care. The project aims to target critical gaps in the scale-up of CMAM in Malawi identified by UNICEF in collaboration with Malawi s Ministry of Health. The project also seeks to support innovative measures that can be taken in the short term to improve the capacity of Malawi s Ministry of Health to effectively and sustainably manage CMAM as a public health program. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. This project aims to improve t...he health of the most marginalized mothers and children in the Dimla sub-district of Nilphamari district, Bangladesh, and in the Lilongwe and Ntchisi districts of Malawi. The project is designed to improve partnerships between communities and health facilities, train community volunteer health workers, and use community education to promote household behaviours that improve the health of mothers and children. Using an integrated model for managing childhood illness, the project supports community health volunteers in providing malaria prevention and nutrition education at the household level and linking communities with maternal and child health services. The project reaches 200 community health volunteers, traditional birth attendants and informal health service providers, as well as 150,000 mothers and their children. World Renew is working in partnership with Scheme for Under-Privileged People to Organize Themselves (Bangladesh) and the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, Nkhoma Relief and Development (Malawi) to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn and child health commitment. / Ce projet améliore la santé des mères et des enfants les plus marginalisés du sous-district de Dimla dans le district de Nilphamari au Bangladesh, et des districts de Lilongwe et de Ntchisi au Malawi. The goal of this project is to... help strengthen the detection, treatment, and prevention of acute malnutrition and to help combat some of the major causes of child mortality, through immunization and improved care at the community level. The project aims to support the provision of basic health services, contribute to the response to the nutrition crisis in Mali, and ensure that the Malian population has access to vaccines and essential drugs. The project involves establishing a mechanism for active detection and treatment of severely malnourished children at the community level; promoting adequate nutrition for infants and young children; as well as ensuring the timely supply of vaccines included in the national immunization program. Additionally, the project includes providing refrigerators to community health centers for vaccine storage, ensuring timely supply of medicines for essential care at the community level, and distributing light medical equipment to community health centres. This project is part of Canada s maternal, newborn, and child health commitment. / Ce projet a pour but de renforcer la détection, le traitement et la prévention de la malnutrition aigüe et d aider dans la lutte contre certaines des principales causes de mortalité infantile, grâce à l immunisation et l amélioration des soins dans les collectivités. Ce projet vise à soutenir la prestation de services de santé de base, à venir en aide aux victimes de la crise alimentaire au Mali et à veiller à ce que la population du Mali ait accès à des vaccins et à des médicaments vitaux. Le projet consiste à établir un mécanisme pour la détection active et le traitement des enfants atteints de malnutrition sévère dans les collectivités; à faire la promotion d une nutrition adéquate pour les nourrissons et les jeunes enfants; et à veiller à la prestation, en temps opportun, des vaccins compris dans le programme de vaccination national. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. This project seeks to improve ...the well-being and survival of children by improving the delivery of direct nutrition interventions. The project also aims to document lessons learned to inform nutrition-related policy and program practice at national and global levels. The project aims to: (i) use behaviour change communication programs to promote optimal infant and young child feeding practices; and (ii) provide access to nutritional products, such as fortified foods, to help food-insecure households supplement the diets of their young children in order to provide adequate nutrition. The project aims to combine these nutrition interventions with existing outreach programs in the health sector in order to generate useful knowledge on how to effectively integrate different health-related activities. This project also seeks to generate knowledge to inform and guide global, regional, and national policies to scale up nutrition, and contribute to developing best practices for programming focused on treating for severe acute malnutrition. / Ce projet cherche à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants en améliorant la mise en oeuvre d'interventions directes en nutrition. Le projet vise aussi à consigner les leçons retenues afin d'améliorer les politiques et les programmes en matière de nutrition à l'échelle nationale et mondiale. Il a pour but : i) d'utiliser les programmes de communication pour modifier les comportements en vue de promouvoir des pratiques d'alimentation optimales chez les nourrissons et les jeunes enfants; ii) d'assurer l'accès à des produits nutritionnels, comme les aliments enrichis, pour aider les ménages aux prises avec l'insécurité alimentaire à compléter le régime de leurs jeunes enfants afin de leur offrir une nutrition adéquate. Le projet vise à combiner ces interventions de nutrition aux actuels programmes de sensibilisation menés dans le secteur de la santé afin de produire des connaissances utiles sur la façon d'intégrer efficacement différentes activités liées à la santé. Ce projet cherche également à produire des connaissances en vue d'améliorer et de guider les politiques mondiales, régionales et nationales afin de reproduire à plus grande échelle les interventions en nutrition et de contribuer à l'élaboration de pratiques exemplaires pour les programmes axés sur le traitement de la malnutrition aiguë sévère.

The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition practices, and strengthen local health systems in 12 districts in the Mopti Region of Mali, the province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, and the province of Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan. Using a community-based approach, the project aims to increase health centre coverage, improve the skills of government health management and medical staff and community health workers, and contribute to reduce malnutrition amongst women and young children. Expected direct beneficiaries include 363,709 women, 196,857 children, and 274 health facility workers. Project activities include: training health care providers in obstetric care, and child health and nutrition; improving procedures and communication across all levels of community health facilities; and helping local committees to carry out nutrition education campaigns for mothers and children. The Aga Khan Foundation Canada is working with the Aga Khan Development Network (Mali), Aga Khan Foundation (Mozambique), Aga Khan Foundation (Pakistan) and Aga Khan Health Services (Pakistan) to implement this project. The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include: improved nutrition practices of women and children; increased use of integrated maternal, newborn and child health services by women and children under five years of age; and, increased quality of maternal, newborn and child health services provided to women and children under five years of age. Les bénéficiaires directs prévus comptent 363 709 femmes, 196 857 enfants et 274 travailleurs dans les établissements de santé. This project focuses on food s...ecurity and nutrition and on enterprise and economic development. It aims to improve livelihood security and resilience of 246,216 vulnerable people, with a special emphasis on women and girls. The program will work with government and local NGO partners using a variety of strategies to improve and augment the productive assets they have available to them in an environmentally sustainable way in order to reduce their vulnerability context and increase their ability to cope with inevitable set-backs and shocks. Key project activities include: 1) Identify and organize community based organisations to provide services and training; 2) Train service providers at local level in post-harvest storage, preservation, production; 3) Provide guidance to groups on village savings and loans associations; 4) Support most promising local products or services using value chain analysis; and 5) Share gained knowledge with wider network and link projects, partners and countries to influence policy and practice. / Ce projet se concentre sur la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition ainsi que sur le développement des entreprises et de l'économie. Il vise à améliorer la sécurité et la résilience des moyens de subsistance de 246 216 personnes vulnérables, avec une emphase particulière sur les femmes et les filles. Le projet met en pratique diverses stratégies pour améliorer et augmenter les biens productifs qui sont à leur disposition d'une manière viable pour l'environnement dans le but de réduire leur vulnérabilité et d'augmenter leur capacité à faire face aux impondérables et aux chocs. As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. This Joint UN programme aims t...o contribute to the reduction of maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality nationally, with a particular focus in Zambezia Province. It aims to do so through: (i) technical assistance to improve policy, planning, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation; (ii) provision of training and other inputs to expand health services and improve the quality of services provided; (iii) technical assistance to improve the ability of the Zambezia Provincial Directorate of Health to deliver on its mandate and provide services to its population; and (iv) social mobilisation in communities to increase the knowledge of and demand for quality health care as well as adopting infant feeding and appropriate hygiene practices. / Ce programme commun des Nations Unies vise à contribuer à la réduction de la morbidité et de la mortalité maternelle, néonatale, et infantile à l échelle nationale, tout particulièrement dans la province de Zambezia. Pour y parvenir, le programme vise à fournir : i) une assistance technique afin d améliorer les politiques, la planification, la budgétisation et les méthodes de suivi et d évaluation; ii) de la formation et d autres interventions pour élargir l offre de services de santé et améliorer la qualité de ces services; iii) une assistance technique pour accroître la capacité de la Direction provinciale de la santé de Zambezia à accomplir son mandat et à fournir des services à sa population. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition practices, and strengthen local health systems in 12 districts in the Mopti Region of Mali, the province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, and the province of Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan. Using a community-based approach, the project aims to increase health centre coverage, improve the skills of government health management and medical staff and community health workers, and contribute to reduce malnutrition amongst women and young children. Expected direct beneficiaries include 363,709 women, 196,857 children, and 274 health facility workers. Project activities include: training health care providers in obstetric care, and child health and nutrition; improving procedures and communication across all levels of community health facilities; and helping local committees to carry out nutrition education campaigns for mothers and children. The Aga Khan Foundation Canada is working with the Aga Khan Development Network (Mali), Aga Khan Foundation (Mozambique), Aga Khan Foundation (Pakistan) and Aga Khan Health Services (Pakistan) to implement this project. The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include: improved nutrition practices of women and children; increased use of integrated maternal, newborn and child health services by women and children under five years of age; and, increased quality of maternal, newborn and child health services provided to women and children under five years of age. This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania. / Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. The main objective of the prog...ram is to reduce gender inequality by increasing the sustainability, skill set and programming reach for southern partners to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of women in food security, rural livelihoods, HIV/AIDS reduction and freedom from violence; and empower women to actively advance women s democratic rights. In Canada, OXFAM s methodology focuses upon mobilizing Canadians to deepen their understanding and engagement, particularly on global women s issues, aid effectiveness principles and the interplay between active citizens and effective states to affect sustainable poverty reduction. Key activities include: capacity building of 44 partners to improve program delivery, through training and technical assistance on gender equality for women to secure improved livelihoods, access to credit, property and labour rights, and protection against HIV/AIDS and violence. The expected results include: • 4,211 small-holder farmers, traders and cooperative members (of which 69% or 2,902 are female) with increased sustainable incomes from local agricultural value chains; • 136 local partner staff, policy makers, practitioners and researchers with the capacity to use and replicate community asset-based entrepreneurship models to economically empower small holder farmers, particularly women; • Increased knowledge and skills of women and men in rural economic collectives to manage the production and marketing of value added products; • Improved collaboration between actors in the value chain; • Increased integration of asset-based approaches to community economic development by decision-makers and practitioners. / L objectif principal du programme est la réduction de l inégalité entre les sexes en augmentant la durabilité, les compétences et la portée de la programmation des partenaires du Sud pour fournir des améliorations tangibles dans les vies des femmes en matière de sécurité alimentaire, de moyens de subsistance en milieu rural, de réduction du VIH/sida et de prévention contre la violence, et faire en sorte que les femmes soient en mesure de faire avancer elles-mêmes leurs droits démocratiques. Au Canada, la méthodologie d OXFAM se penche sur la mobilisation des Canadiens afin d approfondir leur compréhension et leur engagement, particulièrement par rapport aux problèmes des femmes dans le monde, les principes d efficacité de l aide et de l interaction entre les citoyens engagés et des États efficaces et leur impact pour une réduction durable de la pauvreté. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) offrir des programmes « aliments contre travail »; 4) distribuer des bons d alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l achat d aliments; 5) soutenir les programmes d alimentation scolaire d urgence.

This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. The goal of this project is to... provide women livestock farmers with greater access to and control of economic resources. It aims to increase the productivity of the dairy sector in three districts of southern Punjab in a way that creates opportunities for women to contribute more equitably to the sector. The project supports activities in three main areas: i) The project aims to strengthen 100 existing dairy cooperatives (Farmers Milk Cooperatives) and establish up to 250 new cooperatives. Activities in this area include: providing the cooperatives with modern milk processing equipment; training farmers in modern techniques for breeding and raising livestock; and establishing local support services such as veterinary workers, artificial insemination technicians, and milk marketing specialists. ii) The project aims to increase the contribution of women livestock farmers to the dairy sector. Activities in this area include: providing the poorest women with assests such as buffalos, barns, feed mixers, and water troughs; providing training on how to use and manage these new assets; and providing training for female executives of the cooperatives to help them become more widely involved across the dairy sector. iii) The project aims to facilitate the creation of connections between farmers, cooperatives, the private sector, and the government. Activities in this area include: poster campaigns to increase the visibility of the cooperatives; media and communications campaigns to engage potential private sector partners for farmers and the cooperatives; and expanding the ability of the cooperatives and the government to provide local educational and advisory services that meet the needs of the dairy sector. The project is expected to benefit up to 12,250 dairy farmers and their families. / Ce projet vise à donner aux agricultrices qui élèvent du bétail un meilleur accès aux ressources économiques et un contrôle accru sur celles-ci. Il vise à accroître la productivité du secteur laitier dans trois districts dans le Panjab du Sud pour offrir aux femmes la possibilité de contribuer de façon plus équitable à ce secteur. Le projet appuie des activités dans trois domaines clés suivants : i) Le projet vise à renforcer 100 coopératives laitières existantes (coopératives agricoles laitières) et à créer jusqu à 250 nouvelles coopératives. Le projet vise notamment à munir les coopératives d équipement moderne de transformation du lait; à enseigner aux agriculteurs les techniques modernes de reproduction et d élevage du bétail; à mettre en place des services d appui locaux (travailleurs vétérinaires, techniciens de l insémination artificielle et spécialistes de la mise en marché du lait). ii) Le projet vise à accroître la contribution des agricultrices qui élèvent du bétail au secteur laitier. The project aims to improve ma...ternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition practices, and strengthen local health systems in 12 districts in the Mopti Region of Mali, the province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, and the province of Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan. Using a community-based approach, the project aims to increase health centre coverage, improve the skills of government health management and medical staff and community health workers, and contribute to reduce malnutrition amongst women and young children. Expected direct beneficiaries include 363,709 women, 196,857 children, and 274 health facility workers. Project activities include: training health care providers in obstetric care, and child health and nutrition; improving procedures and communication across all levels of community health facilities; and helping local committees to carry out nutrition education campaigns for mothers and children. The Aga Khan Foundation Canada is working with the Aga Khan Development Network (Mali), Aga Khan Foundation (Mozambique), Aga Khan Foundation (Pakistan) and Aga Khan Health Services (Pakistan) to implement this project. The expected intermediate outcomes of this project include: improved nutrition practices of women and children; increased use of integrated maternal, newborn and child health services by women and children under five years of age; and, increased quality of maternal, newborn and child health services provided to women and children under five years of age. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. / Le projet vise à améliorer la santé et l'alimentation des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants, tout en renforçant les systèmes de santé locaux de 12 districts de la région Mopti du Mali, de la province Cabo Delgado au Mozambique, et de la province de Gilgit-Baltistan au Pakistan. En utilisant une approche communautaire, le projet vise à augmenter le rayonnement des centres de santé, améliorer les compétences de la gestion gouvernementale pour la santé, du personnel médical et des travailleurs de santé communautaire, tout en contribuant à la réduction de la malnutrition parmi les femmes et les jeunes enfants. Les bénéficiaires directs prévus comptent 363 709 femmes, 196 857 enfants et 274 travailleurs dans les établissements de santé. Les activités du projet comprennent : la formation des fournisseurs de soins de santé pour les soins obstétriques et la santé et la nutrition des enfants, l'amélioration des procédures et de la communication à tous les niveaux entre les établissements de santé et une assistance auprès des comités locaux pour la mise en oeuvre de campagnes d'éducation en nutrition pour les mères et les enfants. February 2014 - On November 8,... 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) made landfall in the Philippines, a densely populated country of 92 million people. The category five typhoon killed over 6,000 Filipinos, caused four million people to be displaced from their homes, and caused severe damage to infrastructure, including homes, roads, schools and health centres. Although many people have already received life-saving humanitarian assistance, significant humanitarian needs remain, including early recovery activities that contribute to building communities that are more resilient. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is helping up to three million people affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by providing emergency food assistance, cash, and support to improve people s nutrition. Project activities include: (1) providing food assistance to specific vulnerable groups that do not have access to markets or income; (2) providing cash-for-work and food-for-work programs to clear debris thereby reviving markets and economies and giving people the opportunity to meet their basic needs; (3) providing community-based supplementary feeding programs and specialized food products (such as fortified blended foods or high-energy biscuits that improve people s nutritional intake) to children aged 6 to 59 months, and pregnant and lactating women who are suffering from acute malnutrition; and (4) providing powder containing multiple life-saving micronutrients and fortified foods to children aged 6 to 59 months to help prevent under-nutrition and malnutrition. / Février 2014 - Le 8 novembre 2013, le typhon Haiyan (appelé « Yolanda » aux Philippines) a frappé les Philippines, un pays densément peuplé qui compte 92 millions d habitants. Le typhon de catégorie 5 a tué plus de 6 000 Philippins et causé de lourds dommages aux infrastructures, dont des maisons, des routes, des écoles et des centres de soins de santé. Quatre millions de personnes ont été déplacées de leur domicile. Même si de nombreuses personnes ont déjà reçu une assistance humanitaire vitale, les besoins humanitaires sont encore grands, entre autres la mise en oeuvre d activités de redressement hâtif qui contribuent à bâtir des collectivités plus résilientes. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. This project aims to improve n...utrition and agricultural production in food-insecure areas. Some project activities include: (i) the creation of social safety nets (distribution of cash vouchers and establishment of cereal banks); (ii) nutrition activities (prevention/treatment of moderate and severe acute malnutrition, promotion of good nutritional and hygiene practices, and salt iodisation); (iii) agricultural production activities (such as the distribution of seeds, fertilizer, tools, lowland rehabilitation, construction of dikes, wells, and fences); and (iv) activities aimed at strengthening Senegal s Early Warning System on food security issues. This initiative is implemented by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in collaboration with the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). / Le projet vise à améliorer la situation nutritionnelle et la production agricole dans les zones à risque d insécurité alimentaire. Les activités du projet comprennent: i) la mise en place de filets de sécurité sociaux (bons d achats, banques céréalières); ii) des activités en matière de nutrition(prévention/traitement de la malnutrition aiguë modérée et aiguë sévère, promotion de bonnes pratiques nutritionnelles et d hygiène et iodation du sel); iii) des activités visant la production agricole (distribution de semences, engrais, petits outils, aménagement de bas-fonds, construction de digues anti-sel, puits et clôtures); iv) le renforcement du système sénégalais d alerte précoce en sécurité alimentaire. This project aims to improve t...he nutrition of women and young children in select target populations in three or four countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The project seeks to improve nutrition by providing training in home-based agricultural production, education on nutrition, and raising awareness of behaviour change, such as promoting good breast-feeding practices. In addition, this project aims to continuously monitor the impact of these activities on child growth and nutritional status as well as the number of women adopting good breast-feeding and nutrition practices in the home. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition des femmes et des jeunes enfants dans des populations ciblées de trois ou quatre pays de l Afrique subsaharienne. Pour ce faire, on formera les populations à la production agricole à domicile, on leur enseignera les fondements de la nutrition et on les encouragera à changer leurs habitudes, par exemple en les sensibilisant aux bonnes pratiques en matière d allaitement. On fera également un suivi continuel des effets de ces activités sur la croissance et l état nutritionnel des enfants ainsi que du nombre de femmes qui adoptent de saines pratiques en matière d allaitement et de nutrition à la maison.

This project seeks to improve ...the well-being and survival of children by improving the delivery of direct nutrition interventions. The project also aims to document lessons learned to inform nutrition-related policy and program practice at national and global levels. The project aims to: (i) use behaviour change communication programs to promote optimal infant and young child feeding practices; and (ii) provide access to nutritional products, such as fortified foods, to help food-insecure households supplement the diets of their young children in order to provide adequate nutrition. The project aims to combine these nutrition interventions with existing outreach programs in the health sector in order to generate useful knowledge on how to effectively integrate different health-related activities. This project also seeks to generate knowledge to inform and guide global, regional, and national policies to scale up nutrition, and contribute to developing best practices for programming focused on treating for severe acute malnutrition. / Ce projet cherche à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants en améliorant la mise en oeuvre d'interventions directes en nutrition. Le projet vise aussi à consigner les leçons retenues afin d'améliorer les politiques et les programmes en matière de nutrition à l'échelle nationale et mondiale. Il a pour but : i) d'utiliser les programmes de communication pour modifier les comportements en vue de promouvoir des pratiques d'alimentation optimales chez les nourrissons et les jeunes enfants; ii) d'assurer l'accès à des produits nutritionnels, comme les aliments enrichis, pour aider les ménages aux prises avec l'insécurité alimentaire à compléter le régime de leurs jeunes enfants afin de leur offrir une nutrition adéquate. Le projet vise à combiner ces interventions de nutrition aux actuels programmes de sensibilisation menés dans le secteur de la santé afin de produire des connaissances utiles sur la façon d'intégrer efficacement différentes activités liées à la santé. Ce projet cherche également à produire des connaissances en vue d'améliorer et de guider les politiques mondiales, régionales et nationales afin de reproduire à plus grande échelle les interventions en nutrition et de contribuer à l'élaboration de pratiques exemplaires pour les programmes axés sur le traitement de la malnutrition aiguë sévère.

March 2013 - Somalia remains a... country in extreme crisis: an estimated 2.1 million people (or 25 percent of the population) require immediate humanitarian assistance and a further 1.7 million people remain on the brink of crisis, with all reserves gone and vulnerable to the slightest shock. Widespread food insecurity, acute malnutrition, and displacement, caused by both conflict and climatic events (drought, flooding), all remain serious concerns. Malnutrition rates in many areas of the country remain above the 15 percent emergency threshold. More than 70 percent of the population is without reliable access to safe water. In addition, more than one million Somalis remain displaced from their homes. With CIDA support, OXFAM is providing treatment for acute malnutrition, safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, and knowledge of proper hygiene practices to an estimated 142,000 people affected by drought and conflict in the Kismayu district of Lower Juba region in southern Somalia. / Mars 2013 - La Somalie continue de vivre une crise très grave : en effet, environ 2,1 millions de personnes (soit 25 % de la population) ont besoin d assistance humanitaire immédiate, et 1,7 million de personnes additionnelles sont sur le point de subir la crise, car toutes leurs réserves sont épuisées et elles sont vulnérables au moindre bouleversement. L insécurité alimentaire répandue, la malnutrition aiguë et les déplacements, qui résultent autant du conflit que des conditions climatiques (sécheresses, inondations), demeurent des enjeux très préoccupants. Le taux de malnutrition dans de nombreuses régions du pays demeure au-dessus du seuil d urgence de 15 %. Plus de 70 % de la population ne bénéficie pas d un accès fiable en eau potable. En outre, plus d un million de Somaliens demeurent éloignés de leur foyer. Grâce au soutien de l ACDI, OXFAM fournit des traitements de la malnutrition aiguë, de l eau potable, des installations sanitaires adéquates, et communique des pratiques exemplaires en matière d hygiène à environ 142 000 personnes touchées par la sécheresse et le conflit dans le district de Kismayo, dans la région du bas du fleuve Djouba, dans le Sud de la Somalie.

As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. They work with five other Canadian universities, together with researchers and municipal governments in seven cities in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.How this research will make a differenceThe research team will analyze formal and informal urban food systems in the partner cities, how they interact, how they are governed, and their respective contribution to food security and inclusive growth.This project will:-provide evidence of entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities in the urban informal food system;-identify potential opportunities for women and youth to be incorporated as entrepreneurs and employees with decent jobs;-deliver knowledge through workshops, training, and consultations to inform policy and practice at the municipal level on enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the informal food economy;-support 24 students (one post-doctoral, three PhD and 20 master's students) to develop research and collaborate with their Canadian peers; and-offer six policy workshops on urban food security and inclusive growth.The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding this project. In Canada, OXFAM s methodology focuses upon mobilizing Canadians to deepen their understanding and engagement, particularly on global women s issues, aid effectiveness principles and the interplay between active citizens and effective states to affect sustainable poverty reduction. Key activities include: capacity building of 44 partners to improve program delivery, through training and technical assistance on gender equality for women to secure improved livelihoods, access to credit, property and labour rights, and protection against HIV/AIDS and violence. The expected results include: • 4,211 small-holder farmers, traders and cooperative members (of which 69% or 2,902 are female) with increased sustainable incomes from local agricultural value chains; • 136 local partner staff, policy makers, practitioners and researchers with the capacity to use and replicate community asset-based entrepreneurship models to economically empower small holder farmers, particularly women; • Increased knowledge and skills of women and men in rural economic collectives to manage the production and marketing of value added products; • Improved collaboration between actors in the value chain; • Increased integration of asset-based approaches to community economic development by decision-makers and practitioners. / L objectif principal du programme est la réduction de l inégalité entre les sexes en augmentant la durabilité, les compétences et la portée de la programmation des partenaires du Sud pour fournir des améliorations tangibles dans les vies des femmes en matière de sécurité alimentaire, de moyens de subsistance en milieu rural, de réduction du VIH/sida et de prévention contre la violence, et faire en sorte que les femmes soient en mesure de faire avancer elles-mêmes leurs droits démocratiques. The Pan-Africa Bean Research A...lliance (PABRA) focuses on improving bean crop production in order to increase the nutrition and food security of rural populations (with a focus on women and children). PABRA is a pan-African research and development alliance comprising three regional networks operating in 24 countries in Eastern, Central, Southern and Western Africa, an international agricultural research centre, donors and other public, private and non-governmental organization. This phase IV of the project (PABRA IV) contributes directly to one of the four components of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) encompassing agricultural research, as well as technology dissemination and adoption. PABRA supports improved nutrition, health, gender equality and food security in several African countries through the development and dissemination of bean varieties that are resistant to drought, disease and pests. / L'Alliance panafricaine pour la recherche sur le haricot (PABRA) est un regroupement qui vise l'amélioration de la production du haricot en vue d'accroitre la sécurité alimentaire et nutritionnelle des populations rurales (l'accent étant mis sur les femmes et les enfants). PABRA est une alliance africaine de recherche et de développement regroupant trois réseaux régionaux qui oeuvrent dans 24 pays de l'Afrique de l'Est, centrale, australe et de l'Ouest, un centre international de recherche agricole, des donateurs et des organisations publiques, privées et non gouvernementales. Cette phase IV du projet (PABRA IV) contribue directement à l'une des quatre composantes du Programme détaillé de développement de l'agriculture africaine (PDDAA) qui englobe des activités liées à la recherche agricole, de même qu'à la diffusion et à l'adoption de techniques. The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors to the Immediate Response Account, WFP is able to respond swiftly to rapid-onset emergencies and protracted crises by providing much-needed up-front funding, and to avoid major pipeline breaks in life-saving operations. Activities include: (1) providing food assistance; (2) conducting assessments; (3) supporting local and regional markets; (4) providing supplementary feeding for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and female-headed households; and (5) improving logistical and telecommunications support to transport food on ships, planes, helicopters and trucks, to crisis zones. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des aliments aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs en faveur du Compte d interventions immédiates, le Programme alimentaire mondial peut répondre rapidement aux situations d urgence soudaines et aux crises prolongées en offrant un financement initial nécessaire, et éviter les importantes ruptures d approvisionnement au cours des opérations visant à sauver des vies. Parmi les activités : 1) offrir une assistance alimentaire; 2) mener des évaluations; 3) appuyer les marchés locaux et régionaux; 4) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux groupes vulnérables tels que les enfants, les femmes enceintes et celles qui allaitent, et les ménages dirigés par une femme; 5) améliorer le soutien logistique et aux télécommunications pour le transport d aliments par bateau, hélicoptère et camion vers les zones de crise.

This project expands Canada s ...support to Renewed Efforts Against Child Hunger and Undernutrition (REACH) in order to support country-led efforts to effectively scale-up nutrition activities to improve health and reduce death in the most vulnerable mothers and children. This project brings REACH into three to four additional countries with high rates of undernutrition, which have joined the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement. REACH provides support that is based on a country s specific needs and level of preparedness for scaling up nutrition interventions, and works to increase government capacity to address undernutrition effectively and sustainably. The coordinated REACH approach ensures more effective and coherent food and nutrition assistance by supporting integrated interventions to link child undernutrition, food security (or access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food), and health. The project also supports the REACH Secretariat, which provides overall coordination and technical expertise to participating countries. REACH is a coordinating mechanism of five United Nations agencies working in the field of nutrition: the United Nations World Food Programme, the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and a recent new member, the International Fund for Agricultural Development. / Ce projet augmente le soutien du Canada au mécanisme REACH (Renewed Efforts Against Child Hunger and Undernutrition) afin d appuyer les efforts des pays visant à élargir la portée des activités en nutrition en vue d améliorer l état de santé et de réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants les plus vulnérables. Le projet permet d introduire REACH dans trois à quatre autres pays qui affichent un taux élevé de dénutrition et qui se sont joints au Mouvement de renforcement de la nutrition (SUN, Scaling Up Nutrition). REACH offre aux pays un soutien adapté à leurs besoins particuliers et à leur état de préparation aux interventions axées sur le renforcement de la nutrition, et il cherche à accroître la capacité du gouvernement de trouver des solutions efficaces et durables aux problèmes de dénutrition. L approche concertée de REACH assure une aide plus efficace et cohérente relativement à l alimentation et à la nutrition en appuyant la réalisation d interventions intégrées qui englobent la lutte contre la dénutrition chez les enfants, la sécurité alimentaire (ou l accès en quantité suffisante à des aliments salubres et nutritifs) et la santé. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. The mandate of the SUN Movemen...t Secretariat is to coordinate efforts within the SUN Movement and to track the success of the Movement in ending undernutrition. The Secretariat seeks to ensure that SUN countries receive the support they need to achieve their nutrition objectives and provides coordination support to the different actors engaged in scaling up nutrition efforts. With DFATD support and the funding support of other donors, the SUN Movement Secretariat provides support to the SUN Lead Group, members of which are high-level leaders committed to nutrition, to maintain stewardship over the SUN movement, sustain global political attention on nutrition and mobilize resources to address undernutrition. With SUN countries, the Secretariat continues to provide support to countries in their efforts to bring together national stakeholders to implement effective actions to scale up nutrition actions by ensuring SUN countries have timely access to the technical expertise they need. The Secretariat also provides support to countries to track their progress in scaling up nutrition. / Le Secrétariat du Mouvement de renforcement de la nutrition (SUN) a pour mandat de coordonner les efforts réalisés au sein du Mouvement et de faire le suivi des réussites de ce dernier pour ce qui est de mettre fin à la dénutrition. Son objectif est d aider les pays visés à recevoir le soutien dont ils ont besoin pour atteindre leurs objectifs en matière de nutrition, et de fournir du soutien en matière de coordination aux divers acteurs participant aux efforts réalisés afin de renforcer la nutrition. Avec le concours du MAECD et l aide financière d autres donateurs, le Secrétariat du Mouvement SUN offre un soutien au Groupe principal SUN, dont les membres sont des dirigeants de haut niveau attachés à la nutrition, dans le but d assurer l intendance du Mouvement, de maintenir l attention politique mondiale sur la nutrition et de mobiliser des ressources pour enrayer la dénutrition. De concert avec les pays membres du Mouvement, le Secrétariat continue d appuyer les efforts visant à rassembler les intervenants nationaux pour qu ils mettent en oeuvre des mesures efficaces de renforcement de la nutrition en faisant en sorte que ces pays aient accès en temps opportun au savoir-faire technique dont ils ont besoin. De plus, le Secrétariat offre aux pays un soutien leur permettant de suivre l évolution de leurs efforts pour ce qui est de renforcer la nutrition.
