March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania. / Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. Une formation sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'agriculture durable est également donnée aux agriculteurs et agricultrices.

Cambodia is rice sufficient, b...ut household food insecurity remains high leading to high maternal and child under-nutrition. This stems from a lack of crop diversification beyond rice and a lack of nutrient rich foods in the diet. Though several intervention models are being implemented, there is a need to test integrated systems that increase and diversify food production, providing low income households with affordable foods with adequate energy, protein as well as bioavailable forms of essential micronutrients like iron and vitamin A. There is also a need for rigorous evaluation of the actual impact of agricultural interventions on nutritional status. This project led by the Helen Keller International, Cambodia and the University of British Columbia, Canada, aims to improve household food security and nutrition outcomes, livelihoods and women s empowerment through an integrated homestead food production which innovatively combines small-scale aquaculture. Research will be conducted through a randomized control trial using baseline and follow-up surveys to determine the impact of the intervention on household food security, nutritional status and livelihoods. The project will also assess income generating opportunities, issues around scalability and the feasibility of the model which will facilitate wider uptake in Cambodia and the region.

This project seeks to prevent ...and reduce death among mothers and children under the age of five in the Chieb, Chey Sen and Rovieng districts of northern Cambodia. The project focuses on empowering communities by improving the health care practices of mothers and women of reproductive age, increasing the ability of health care providers and traditional birth attendants to provide quality health services, and improving nutrition. The project aims to address the health needs of more than 70,000 underserved women and children. Activities include: training local village health support groups; promoting vaccination, appropriate care during illness, and better household sanitation and hygiene; constructing eight health facilities; conducting nutritional awareness sessions; and supporting the distribution of micronutrient, iron and folic acid supplements for women and children. This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn, and child health commitment. / Ce projet vise à prévenir les décès et à réduire le taux de mortalité chez les mères et les enfants de moins de cinq ans dans les districts de Chieb, Chey Sen et Rovieng, dans le Nord du Cambodge. Il est axé sur la prise en charge par les communautés, grâce à l'amélioration des soins de santé que peuvent offrir les mères et les femmes en âge de procréer, au renforcement de la capacité des fournisseurs de soins de santé et des accoucheuses traditionnelles à dispenser des services de santé de qualité et à la sensibilisation en matière de nutrition. L'objectif du projet est de répondre aux besoins en matière de santé de plus de 70 000 femmes et enfants qui vivent dans des régions mal desservies. Les activités comprennent : la formation de groupes locaux de soutien en santé dans les villages, la promotion de la vaccination, la prestation de soins adéquats durant les maladies et l'amélioration de l'hygiène et des installations sanitaires dans les foyers; la construction de huit établissements de santé; l'animation de séances de sensibilisation en matière de nutrition; le soutien à la distribution de suppléments en oligo-éléments, en fer et en acide folique pour les femmes et les enfants. Ce projet fait partie de l'engagement du Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants.

This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. Le projet est mis en oeuvre au Burkina Faso, au Cameroun, en Côte d Ivoire, en Guinée, au Kenya, au Mali, au Mozambique, au Niger, au Nigéria, en République démocratique du Congo, au Sénégal, en Sierra Leone et en Tanzanie.

February 2014 - Since December... 2012, all 4.6 million people living in the Central African Republic (CAR) have been affected by ongoing conflict and insecurity. Over the past year, fighting between armed groups and increasing vigilante violence have taken an immense toll on civilians and escalated humanitarian needs. Agricultural production has been disrupted and essential basic services, such as schools and medical facilities, have been shut down or destroyed in the fighting. There are widespread and increasing reports of looting, extortion, arbitrary arrests, torture, summary executions, sexual violence, and recruitment of children by roving bands of armed groups across the country. With the support of DFATD and other donors, the United Nations World Food Programme is providing life-saving food assistance to approximately 1,250,000 vulnerable people in the CAR. Activities include: (i) providing food assistance to 1,112,000 internally displaced people, refugees, and other vulnerable groups; (ii) providing nutrition support to 190,500 children under the age of five to prevent and treat malnutrition and to 10,000 pregnant and lactating women suffering from moderate acute malnutrition; (iii) supporting school feeding programs to encourage 197,000 children in areas where schools have opened again to enrol; and (iv) providing food assistance to 15,500 people living with HIV.

As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. They work with five other Canadian universities, together with researchers and municipal governments in seven cities in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.How this research will make a differenceThe research team will analyze formal and informal urban food systems in the partner cities, how they interact, how they are governed, and their respective contribution to food security and inclusive growth.This project will:-provide evidence of entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities in the urban informal food system;-identify potential opportunities for women and youth to be incorporated as entrepreneurs and employees with decent jobs;-deliver knowledge through workshops, training, and consultations to inform policy and practice at the municipal level on enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the informal food economy;-support 24 students (one post-doctoral, three PhD and 20 master's students) to develop research and collaborate with their Canadian peers; and-offer six policy workshops on urban food security and inclusive growth.The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding this project. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. This project aims to improve t...he nutrition of women and young children in select target populations in three or four countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The project seeks to improve nutrition by providing training in home-based agricultural production, education on nutrition, and raising awareness of behaviour change, such as promoting good breast-feeding practices. In addition, this project aims to continuously monitor the impact of these activities on child growth and nutritional status as well as the number of women adopting good breast-feeding and nutrition practices in the home. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition des femmes et des jeunes enfants dans des populations ciblées de trois ou quatre pays de l Afrique subsaharienne. Pour ce faire, on formera les populations à la production agricole à domicile, on leur enseignera les fondements de la nutrition et on les encouragera à changer leurs habitudes, par exemple en les sensibilisant aux bonnes pratiques en matière d allaitement. On fera également un suivi continuel des effets de ces activités sur la croissance et l état nutritionnel des enfants ainsi que du nombre de femmes qui adoptent de saines pratiques en matière d allaitement et de nutrition à la maison.

The piloting of a Purchase for... Progress approach in Cuba aims to strengthen the sustainable production of nutritious beans and fortified rice flours, which will contribute to increased consumption of these products by vulnerable groups, targeted in government subsidized food programs. This will be achieved through technical assistance and sharing best practices with small-scale farmers on crop management and technologies to increase quality and quantity of yields; to train local bean producers, especially women producers, in improved environmentally sustainable agricultural production and management techniques, gender equality, and cooperative governance and leadership; to purchase by the World Food Programme a certain amount of crop surpluses produced by small-scale farmers and to re-direct this purchase to vulnerable groups (health institution recipients, the elderly and pregnant women) and school children under five. / Le pilotage d une approche à achats pour le progrès à Cuba vise à renforcer la production durable de haricots nutritifs et les farines de riz enrichis, ce qui contribuera à l augmentation de la consommation de ces produits par les groupes vulnérables, ciblés dans les programmes alimentaires subventionnés par le gouvernement. Cet objectif sera atteint grâce à l assistance technique et le partage des meilleures pratiques en matière de gestion et de technologies avec les petits agriculteurs pour accroître la qualité et la quantité des rendements des cultures; de former les producteurs locaux de soja, en particulier les femmes, les producteurs dans l amélioration des techniques de production et de gestion agricoles respectueuses de l environnement, l égalité des sexes et la gouvernance et le leadership coopératif; à l achat par le Programme alimentaire mondial une certaine quantité d excédents agricoles produits par les agriculteurs à petite échelle et à réorienter cet achat aux groupes vulnérables (bénéficiaires des établissements de santé, les femmes âgées et les femmes enceintes) et les enfants de l école moins de cinq ans.

The main objective of the prog...ram is to reduce gender inequality by increasing the sustainability, skill set and programming reach for southern partners to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of women in food security, rural livelihoods, HIV/AIDS reduction and freedom from violence; and empower women to actively advance women s democratic rights. In Canada, OXFAM s methodology focuses upon mobilizing Canadians to deepen their understanding and engagement, particularly on global women s issues, aid effectiveness principles and the interplay between active citizens and effective states to affect sustainable poverty reduction. Key activities include: capacity building of 44 partners to improve program delivery, through training and technical assistance on gender equality for women to secure improved livelihoods, access to credit, property and labour rights, and protection against HIV/AIDS and violence. The expected results include: • 4,211 small-holder farmers, traders and cooperative members (of which 69% or 2,902 are female) with increased sustainable incomes from local agricultural value chains; • 136 local partner staff, policy makers, practitioners and researchers with the capacity to use and replicate community asset-based entrepreneurship models to economically empower small holder farmers, particularly women; • Increased knowledge and skills of women and men in rural economic collectives to manage the production and marketing of value added products; • Improved collaboration between actors in the value chain; • Increased integration of asset-based approaches to community economic development by decision-makers and practitioners. / L objectif principal du programme est la réduction de l inégalité entre les sexes en augmentant la durabilité, les compétences et la portée de la programmation des partenaires du Sud pour fournir des améliorations tangibles dans les vies des femmes en matière de sécurité alimentaire, de moyens de subsistance en milieu rural, de réduction du VIH/sida et de prévention contre la violence, et faire en sorte que les femmes soient en mesure de faire avancer elles-mêmes leurs droits démocratiques. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. This project aims to strengthe...n food security and stimulate the sustainable economic growth of small farmers (women and men) in the Chimborazo region by focusing on four intervention areas: (1) biodiversity and natural resources conservation through watershed management and the practice of agro-forestry; (2) food security and cooperative marketing by reinforcing organic agriculture; (3) development of environmental governance capacity building of three local farmers organisations; and (4) women s capacity building to foster their participation in local development and decision-making process. The beneficiaries are 98% indigenous and 50% women. / Ce projet vise à renforcer la sécurité alimentaire et à promouvoir la croissance économique durable des producteurs et productrices de la région du Chimborazo. Pour ce faire, le projet vise quatre secteurs d intervention : 1) la conservation de la biodiversité et des ressources naturelles par la gestion des bassins versants et la pratique de l agroforesterie; 2) la sécurité alimentaire et le développement de coopératives de commercialisation par le renforcement de l agriculture biologique; 3) le développement de la capacité de gouvernance environnementale de trois organisations de fermiers locaux; 4) le développement des capacités des femmes dans le but d encourager leur participation au processus de prise de décision. Parmi les bénéficiaires, 98 % sont autochtones et 50 % sont des femmes.

This project seeks to ensure t...hat women and men in seven districts of Benishangul-Gumuz have better access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food, more sustainable livelihood options, and opportunities for economic growth. The project also works to create partnerships and networks among stakeholders (community, government, donors, civil society) working in the region. The project is designed to implement activities that are in line with local priorities focusing on sustainable agriculture development and improved productivity; promotion of viable livelihoods for income generation; and improvement of the ability of government and non-government service providers at the regional, zonal, district and community levels to deliver accountable and effective services to households lacking access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. The project is implemented by Save the Children Canada in collaboration with five Canadian non-governmental organizations and one intergovernmental organization. / Ce projet vise à faire en sorte que les femmes et les hommes dans sept districts de la région Benishangul-Gumuz aient un meilleur accès à des quantités suffisantes d'aliments sains et nutritifs, des moyens de subsistance plus durables et des opportunités de croissance économique. Le projet travaille aussi pour créer des partenariats et des réseaux parmi les intervenants (collectivité, gouvernement, donateurs, société civile) travaillant dans cette région. The maize contains a naturally derived gene mutation of maize which has a higher content of two essential amino acids necessary to synthesize proteins within the human body after consumption, and provides twice as much nutritional value as common maize.The project supports the adoption of QPM as well as increases in farm productivity and household incomes through the expansion of the maize seed industry. Project activities include: introducing QPM seed and food products to farmers (women and men) engaged in subsistence-level maize production as a means to meet household basic food requirements; disseminating gender-sensitive crop management practices to farmers and agricultural extension officers; and strengthening local capacity of researchers, seed producers, and seed suppliers on the production, distribution, and quality control of QPM seeds.Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia (NuME) is an initiative of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), a member centre of the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research (CGIAR). This project seeks to improve ...the nutrition, health, and survival of newborns and infants in countries where malnutrition is widespread by improving breastfeeding and infant feeding during the transition from exclusive breastfeeding to family foods, called complementary feeding. This initiative aims to use state-of-the-art methods such as private sector marketing, communications, social networking, technology expertise, and technical assistance, to create the social and behavioural changes needed to improve infant and young child feeding practices. The main activities of the project include: (i) engaging the private sector in the development of marketing strategies to improve breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices; and (ii) advocating for an integrated package of activities that includes the promotion of optimal breastfeeding practices during the neonatal period and improved diets for women during adolescence, pregnancy, and lactation. The project also works to build the capacity of frontline health workers to address malnutrition effectively, conduct awareness and behaviour change activities, and evaluate the impact and assess the cost-effectiveness of infant and young child feeding interventions in order to continue to improve their effectiveness and to replicate them in other settings. This project is part of Canada s maternal, newborn, and child health commitment. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition, la santé et le taux de survie chez les nouveau-nés, les nourrissons et les jeunes enfants qui vivent dans des pays où la malnutrition est endémique. Pour ce faire, il améliorera l allaitement et l alimentation des nourrissons au cours de la transition entre l allaitement exclusif et l alimentation familiale, appelée l « alimentation complémentaire ». Dans le cadre de ce projet, on aura recours à des méthodes de pointe, telles que le marketing dans le secteur privé, les communications, le réseautage social, l expertise en matière de technologies et l assistance technique, pour susciter des changements sociaux et modifier les comportements de manière à améliorer les pratiques d alimentation des nouveau-nés, des nourrissons et des jeunes enfants. Despite recent progress, malnutrition remains a serious problem in Ethiopia, and many children do not regularly have enough nutritious food to keep them healthy. Malnutrition contributes to about half of all deaths of children under five years old. Activities include: (1) providing vitamin A supplements, which helps to ensure normal growth and development and to reduce infections and illness, and treatment for worms, which increases the ability to absorb essential nutrients for children under five years old; (2) training health workers at the community level to detect and treat severe acute malnutrition, and (3) treating severely malnourished children and pregnant and breastfeeding women in their own communities with special food. This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. / Ce projet vise à réduire le nombre d'enfants qui sont malades ou mourants en améliorant l'accès de 2,2 millions d'enfants éthiopiens à des soins très efficaces pour prévenir et traiter la malnutrition. March 2014 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to approximately 30 million vulnerable people in several countries in Africa in 2014. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under 5 years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. / Mars 2014 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies en acheminant rapidement des vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. Avec le soutien du MAECD et d autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une assistance alimentaire d urgence à quelque 30 millions de personnes vulnérables dans plusieurs pays d Afrique en 2014. En cas de situation d urgence humanitaire, le PAM s attache principalement à offrir de l assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. 26 July 2011 - The year 2011 i...s proving to be the driest year since 1951 in many parts of east Africa as a result of an increasingly severe drought. Successive seasons of failed rains, combined with increasing food prices, conflict, and limited humanitarian access, have resulted in food insecurity, water shortages, and acute malnutrition rates well above emergency thresholds. Between 11 and 12 million people are now in need of humanitarian assistance in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. With CIDA support, Action Against Hunger (ACF) is providing life-saving support to malnourished Somali refugees arriving in the Dolo Ado refugee camp in south-eastern Ethiopia. Through its supplementary feeding programme, ACF is targetting moderately malnourished mothers and children to initially, stabilize and ultimately improve their nutritional status. In addition, ACF expects to convey basic nutritional education to the entire target community to prevent a wider deterioration of the situation. / Le 26 juillet 2011 - L année 2011 s avère être la plus sèche depuis 1951 dans de nombreuses régions de l Afrique de l Est, en raison d une sécheresse qui ne cesse de s aggraver. Les saisons sèches successives, combinées à l augmentation des prix des aliments, aux conflits et à la difficulté d avoir accès aux populations pour leur apporter une aide humanitaire, ont entraîné des niveaux d insécurité alimentaire, des pénuries d eau et des taux de malnutrition aiguë qui dépassent largement les seuils appelant à une intervention d urgence. Entre 11 et 12 millions de personnes ont maintenant besoin d aide humanitaire à Djibouti, en Éthiopie, au Kenya et en Somalie. Grâce au soutien de l ACDI, Action contre la Faim (ACF) offre une aide qui permet de sauver la vie de réfugiés somaliens souffrant de malnutrition qui arrivent au camp de Dolo Ado, dans le Sud-Est de l Éthiopie. Dans le cadre de son programme d alimentation supplémentaire, ACF cible les mères et les enfants qui souffrent de malnutrition modérée pour d abord stabiliser et ensuite améliorer leur état nutritionnel. The main objective of the prog...ram is to reduce gender inequality by increasing the sustainability, skill set and programming reach for southern partners to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of women in food security, rural livelihoods, HIV/AIDS reduction and freedom from violence; and empower women to actively advance women s democratic rights. In Canada, OXFAM s methodology focuses upon mobilizing Canadians to deepen their understanding and engagement, particularly on global women s issues, aid effectiveness principles and the interplay between active citizens and effective states to affect sustainable poverty reduction. Key activities include: capacity building of 44 partners to improve program delivery, through training and technical assistance on gender equality for women to secure improved livelihoods, access to credit, property and labour rights, and protection against HIV/AIDS and violence. The expected results include: • 4,211 small-holder farmers, traders and cooperative members (of which 69% or 2,902 are female) with increased sustainable incomes from local agricultural value chains; • 136 local partner staff, policy makers, practitioners and researchers with the capacity to use and replicate community asset-based entrepreneurship models to economically empower small holder farmers, particularly women; • Increased knowledge and skills of women and men in rural economic collectives to manage the production and marketing of value added products; • Improved collaboration between actors in the value chain; • Increased integration of asset-based approaches to community economic development by decision-makers and practitioners. / L objectif principal du programme est la réduction de l inégalité entre les sexes en augmentant la durabilité, les compétences et la portée de la programmation des partenaires du Sud pour fournir des améliorations tangibles dans les vies des femmes en matière de sécurité alimentaire, de moyens de subsistance en milieu rural, de réduction du VIH/sida et de prévention contre la violence, et faire en sorte que les femmes soient en mesure de faire avancer elles-mêmes leurs droits démocratiques. Au Canada, la méthodologie d OXFAM se penche sur la mobilisation des Canadiens afin d approfondir leur compréhension et leur engagement, particulièrement par rapport aux problèmes des femmes dans le monde, les principes d efficacité de l aide et de l interaction entre les citoyens engagés et des États efficaces et leur impact pour une réduction durable de la pauvreté. This project aims to improve m...aternal, newborn and child health in three remote and underserved districts in Ethiopia: Damot Pulasa, Arsi Negele and Adaa. In order to address the high rates of mortality in these areas, the project focuses on addressing existing gaps in the health systems, and problems related to the prevalence of killer diseases and malnutrition. Reaching around 120,000 women, newborns and children, project activities include: training health workers and traditional birth attendants on safe, clean delivery, nutrition and improved child-feeding practices, and emergency obstetric care; distributing medical equipment for health centres; establishing neonatal care units; and education on sanitation and hygiene, and malaria prevention. The project also aims to train mothers in home-based management of common childhood illnesses. Using a community-based approach the project is expected to lead to behaviour changes, which are expected to have a positive impact on maternal, newborn and child health in the targeted regions. To implement this project, the Christian Children's Fund of Canada is working in partnership with : Bole Bible Baptist Church Child Care and Community Development, Ratson-Women, the Youth and Children Development Program, and the Wolaitta Kale Heywot Church Terepeza Development Association. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum CIDA contribution to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Le projet améliore la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans les districts éloignés et mal desservis de Damot Pulasa, Arsi Negele et Adaa en Éthiopie. Pour réduire le taux élevé de mortalité dans ces régions, le projet se concentre sur les écarts existants dans les systèmes de santé et les problèmes liés à la prévalence de maladies tueuses et de la malnutrition. This project aims to reduce ma...lnutrition and improve the health of vulnerable women and children living in selected areas of Ethiopia and Zimbabwe. The project addresses better infant and child feeding practices, improved access to health services, as well as enhanced hygiene practices at the household level. Activities include: training women and community health workers on infant feeding practices; training on food diversity and nutrition to improve backyard and community gardens; and developing income generating activities for women. In Ethiopia the project is expected to reach 1,200 community health workers, 500 mothers, and 5,440 children. And in Zimbabwe the project intends to reach 4,000 mothers, 4,000 children and 740 village health workers. CARE Canada is working in partnership with CARE Ethiopia and Zonal Health Offices in West and East Hararghe, Ethiopia; and CARE Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in the Mashvingo and Midlands provinces as well as Agriculture Technology and Extension Services (AGRITEX), the Government of Zimbabwe's agricultural extension service to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. / Ce projet vise à réduire la malnutrition et à améliorer la santé des femmes et des enfants vulnérables qui vivent dans des régions ciblées en Éthiopie et au Zimbabwe. The goal of this project is to... strengthen Ethiopia s health systems in order to deliver effective maternal, newborn and child health services to nomadic communities in the Omo Valley. Using a community-based approach, the project aims to: increase the number of pregnant women accessing health services; increase the proportion of health facilities providing comprehensive health care; and reduce nutritional deficiencies that affect safe childbirth and development. Activities include: training midwives and health workers on emergency obstetric and newborn care, and the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and waterborne diseases; training nurses on safe and clean childbirth; and providing ambulances and laboratory equipment to three health facilities. The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) Canada is working with AMREF Ethiopia to implement this project. This project is part of Canada s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project focuses on food s...ecurity and nutrition and on enterprise and economic development. It aims to improve livelihood security and resilience of 246,216 vulnerable people, with a special emphasis on women and girls. The program will work with government and local NGO partners using a variety of strategies to improve and augment the productive assets they have available to them in an environmentally sustainable way in order to reduce their vulnerability context and increase their ability to cope with inevitable set-backs and shocks. Key project activities include: 1) Identify and organize community based organisations to provide services and training; 2) Train service providers at local level in post-harvest storage, preservation, production; 3) Provide guidance to groups on village savings and loans associations; 4) Support most promising local products or services using value chain analysis; and 5) Share gained knowledge with wider network and link projects, partners and countries to influence policy and practice. / Ce projet se concentre sur la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition ainsi que sur le développement des entreprises et de l'économie. Il vise à accroitre les moyens de subsistance et la résilience de 246 216 personnes vulnérables, avec une emphase particulière sur les femmes et les filles. Le projet, en partenariat avec les ONG et les gouvernements des pays ciblés, met en pratique diverses stratégies pour améliorer les facteurs de production d'une manière viable pour l'environnement dans le but de réduire leur vulnérabilité et d'augmenter leur capacité à faire face aux impondérables et aux chocs. Activités clés du projet : 1) identifier et appuyer des organisations communautaires pour fournir des services et de la formation; 2) former des fournisseurs de services au niveau local pour l'entreposage, la conservation et la production des récoltes; 3) fournir des lignes directrices aux groupes concernant les association d'épargnes et de prêts villageois; 4) soutenir les produits et services locaux les plus prometteurs en utilisant l'analyse de la chaine des valeurs; 5) partager les connaissances acquises dans un réseau plus large et faire des liens aux projets, partenaires et pays, dans le but d'influencer les politiques et les pratiques.

Nutrition plays a critical rol...e in the health of children in Africa. This research support project will provide funding to researchers to assess children s food consumption patterns and their nutritional status in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. The research will allow policymakers to address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region through informed programs and policies. The main objective is to support a project development workshop involving investigators from Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. The research team is expected to finalize a protocol for a three-year study focusing on the food consumption patterns and nutritional status of children aged 6 to 14 in primary schools in the three countries. The project will be implemented in partnership with each countries Ministries of Health and Education. Working in the three countries will provide an opportunity to document the sociocultural determinants of food consumption.More specifically, the project aims to:-refine the research questions, objectives, and overall methodological framework;-develop study instruments, including questionnaires, data forms, flow charts, and consent forms;-discuss the budget proposal and costing;-discuss dissemination strategies; and,-discuss the project s monitoring and evaluation strategy.

This project forms part of DFA...TD's support for the promotion of sustainable rural development through agriculture in Ghana. The purpose of this contribution is to support the Government of Ghana as it implements its second Food and Agriculture Sector Development Policy. The objectives of this policy are: to enhance food security and emergency preparedness; to improve income growth; to increase competitiveness and enhance integration into domestic and international markets; to achieve sustainable management of land and the environment; to apply science and technology in food and agriculture development; and to enhance institutional coordination within Ghana. As with all budget support projects, Canada is working in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Ghana to strengthen the effectiveness of its aid. This is achieved by: focussing on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing coordination and harmonization among donors; and reinforcing mutual accountability. Sector-wide budget support also fosters greater policy dialogue between CIDA, the Government of Ghana, and partners. This reinforces efforts for effective, focussed aid and long-term development results. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of this initiative is undertaken in coordination with other donors. / Ce projet fait partie des actions menées par le MAECD dans le secteur de l'agriculture pour favoriser un développement rural viable au Ghana. L'objectif est d'aider le gouvernement ghanéen à mettre en oeuvre sa deuxième politique de développement du secteur de l'alimentation et de l'agriculture. Les buts de cette politique sont les suivants : améliorer la sécurité alimentaire et la préparation aux situations d'urgence; stimuler la croissance des revenus; accroitre la compétitivité et améliorer l'intégration aux marchés international et national; réaliser le développement durable des terres et de l'environnement; utiliser les connaissances scientifiques et techniques pour favoriser le développement de l'agriculture et des produits alimentaires; et resserrer la coordination institutionnelle au Ghana. Comme c'est le cas pour tous les projets d'appui budgétaire, le Canada collabore étroitement avec les autres donateurs et le gouvernement du Ghana pour accroitre l'efficacité de son aide grâce aux mesures suivantes : mettre l'accent sur des systèmes nationaux responsables, transparents et efficaces; accroitre l'harmonisation et la coordination entre les donateurs; renforcer la responsabilité mutuelle. This project seeks to ensure t...hat poor smallholder farmers and their families in Northern Ghana have enough nutritious food to eat throughout the year. It helps smallholder farmers increase the amount of food they produce and get a good price for their crops. The project works with farmers' cooperatives to provide farmers with training in cultivating alternative crops, marketing, and business management. Through the cooperatives, the project also helps farmers to gain access to drought-resistant seed varieties, tools, crop storage facilities, and farm equipment such as tillers and tractors. The project works with credit unions to provide farmers with access to loans, so that they can invest in their farms. This support makes it possible for some of the smallholder farmers to eventually make the step into commercial farming. / Ce projet vise à assurer que les petits agriculteurs pauvres du nord du Ghana et leurs familles ont assez de nourriture de bonne qualité à manger tout au long de l'année. Le projet aide les petits agriculteurs à accroitre la quantité de nourriture produite et à la commercialiser à bon prix. Par l'entremise d'un appui aux coopératives agricoles, ce projet offre aux fermiers de la formation en cultures de remplacement, en marketing et en gestion d'entreprise. Cette appui leur donne également un accès à des semences résistantes à la sécheresse, à des outils, à des installations d'entreposage de récoltes ainsi que à de l'équipement agricole tel des cultivateurs et des tracteurs. En travaillant avec des caisses d'épargne, le projet permet aux fermiers d'obtenir des prêts en vue d'investir dans leurs fermes. Cet appui permet à certains d'entre eux de franchir le pas éventuellement vers une exploitation commerciale.

Through partnerships with loca...l organizations, the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) expects to help farmers in the Upper West Region overcome constraints and become viable economic partners. MEDA seeks to provide ongoing training, capacity building and mentoring of Ghanaian government agencies (District Assemblies, Regional Planning and Coordination Units, Ministry of Food and Agriculture extension services) and non-government organizations. Targeting women and their families, MEDA intends to undertake activities to improve: production (improved input supplies, awareness of improved techniques, drip irrigation technologies, credit, training); post-harvest handling (storage, sorting, processing such as solar drying, customized loan products, training); and facilitation of market linkages (sales agent model, strategies to deal more effectively with traders, market information and ability to use market information in sales transactions, basic business management and access to target markets). / Au moyen de partenariats avec des organisations locales, l'organisme Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) prévoit aider les agriculteurs de la région nord-ouest à surmonter les difficultés et à devenir des partenaires économiques solides. MEDA compte offrir, de façon continue, des formations, des services de renforcement des capacités et du mentorat à des organismes du gouvernement ghanéen (assemblées de district, divisions de planification et de coordination régionale, services de vulgarisation du ministère de l'Alimentation et de l'Agriculture) et à des organisations non gouvernementales. MEDA prévoit également entreprendre des activités qui ciblent les femmes et leurs familles afin d'améliorer la production (meilleurs intrants, sensibilisation à l'égard de techniques éprouvées, techniques d'irrigation goutte-à-goutte, crédit, formation), la manutention après la récolte (stockage; triage; méthodes de traitement, tel que le séchage au soleil; crédit personnalisé; formation) et l'établissement de liens avec les marchés (modèle d'agent de vente; stratégies pour traiter plus efficacement avec les négociants; informations sur les marchés et capacité d'utiliser ces informations pour réaliser des opérations de vente; notions de base en gestion des affaires; accès aux marchés cibles).

The goal of the project is to ...reduce illness and death due to undernutrition among children and mothers in northern Ghana. The project aims to increase the support available within communities for treating malnutrition and improving nutrition among the most vulnerable populations of northern Ghana. The project activities include training and equipping frontline health workers to treat severely malnourished children; training community volunteers to identify the early stages of severe acute malnutrition and to refer patients for treatment; training community volunteers and local organizations to promote local, nutritious foods; and providing information on good feeding practices for infants and young children. To ensure that the expanded support for nutrition is sustainable and to help reduce the number of children facing undernutrition in the long term, the project helps the Government of Ghana develop and implement a strong and coherent national nutrition policy. The project also includes developing a gender-sensitive nutrition surveillance system in the three northern regions, to help the government and development partners improve nutrition programs, decision-making, and timely response in those regions. / L objectif du projet est de réduire le taux des maladies et de décès dus à la malnutrition chez les enfants et les mères dans le nord du Ghana. Le projet vise à renforcer l appui au sein des collectivités pour traiter la malnutrition et améliorer la nutrition des populations les plus vulnérables du nord du Ghana. Les activités du projet comprennent : former les travailleurs de santé de première ligne et les doter du matériel nécessaire pour traiter les enfants souffrant de malnutrition sévère; former des bénévoles des collectivités à identifier la malnutrition aiguë sévère à un stade précoce et à diriger les patients au traitement; former des bénévoles des collectivités et des organisations locales à promouvoir des aliments nutritifs locaux; diffuser de l information sur les bonnes pratiques d alimentation des nourrissons et des jeunes enfants. Afin de garantir la viabilité de cet appui élargi à la nutrition et d aider à réduire à long terme le nombre d enfants qui souffrent de dénutrition, le projet aide le gouvernement du Ghana à développer et à mettre en oeuvre une politique nationale sur la nutrition qui est solide et cohérente. Le projet comprend également l élaboration d un système de surveillance de la nutrition qui tient compte de la spécificité des sexes, dans les trois régions du Nord, afin d aider le gouvernement et les partenaires au développement à améliorer les programmes de nutrition et la prise de décisions et à réagir promptement dans ces régions.

The project addresses the cons...traints that prevent smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana from producing sufficient food to feed themselves and generate revenue and from becoming resilient to unexpected events such as droughts. It offers transformative and sustainable solutions that address the root causes behind the lack of access to sufficient, nutritious food and the vulnerability to food shortages in the northern regions, while also promoting community and household resilience to external shocks and stresses. Expected activities include: practical training for 21,000 smallholder farmers and service providers in sustainable cropping practices, livestock production, aquaculture, and water management; provision of tools and services, including technical assistance in climate change adaptation and disaster risk management practices, to 150 communities to improve productivity; strengthening and promoting gender-responsive systems of agricultural extension and support; training for 21,000 women and men in income generating activities; and strengthening access for 21,000 smallholder famers to high-value markets in selected agricultural and non-agricultural sub-sectors. / Le projet apporte une solution aux contraintes qui empêchent les petits exploitants agricoles dans le nord du Ghana à produire des aliments en quantité suffisante pour se nourrir et générer des revenus et à devenir résilients à des événements imprévus comme des sécheresses. The project aims to improve fo...od security, or access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food, and provide nutrition support for up to 544,000 vulnerable women, men, girls and boys in the most deprived regions of Northern Ghana. The project seeks to increase the supply of locally produced nutritious foods for school meals; provide nutrition support, such as fortified foods, to vulnerable groups; and help people in communities vulnerable to climate shocks to earn a sustainable living. Some project activities include: (i) providing nutritious food and take-home rations to students in targeted public primary schools; (ii) providing iron supplements to adolescent girls; (iii) providing rations of foods fortified with vitamins and minerals, as well as extra food to malnourished pregnant and lactating women, girls and boys, and people living with HIV; (iv) supporting the building of community assets to improve food security, such as rehabilitating small irrigation infrastructure, and planting trees; and (v) providing training to improve the income-generating skills of food-insecure groups, including households headed by women. / Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, ou l accès à des aliments sains, nutritifs et en quantité suffisante, et de fournir un soutien nutritionnel à au plus 544 000 vulnérables femmes, hommes, filles et garçons dans les régions les plus défavorisées du nord du Ghana. Le projet vise à accroître l offre d aliments nutritifs produits localement pour les repas scolaires, de fournir un soutien nutritionnel à des groupes vulnérables par l entremise d aliments enrichis et d aider les communautés vulnérables aux répercussions attribuables aux changements climatiques à gagner leur vie durable . This project aims to enhance K...wame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology (KNUST) capacity to address the root causes and outcomes of poor natural resource management. The University of Guelph gives a hand to KNUST to enhance livelihoods of resource-poor communities in Ghana. The project includes many activities such as the development and launching of an institutional strategic plan and the development of curriculum for a bachelor's of technology program. In addition, Ghanaian professionals have access to training for men and women as agro-forestry technologists for entry-level careers in public and private sector agencies. Finally, policies are developed in the country and are enhanced during the project. / Ce projet vise à renforcer les capacités de la Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology (KNUST) à s'attaquer aux causes profondes et aux conséquences de la mauvaise gestion des ressources naturelles. L'University of Guelph aide la KNUST à améliorer les moyens de subsistance des collectivités pauvres en ressources au Ghana. Le projet prévoit de nombreuses activités, comme l'élaboration et le lancement d'un plan stratégique institutionnel et l'élaboration d'un cursus pour un programme de baccalauréat en technologie. This project focuses on food s...ecurity and nutrition and on enterprise and economic development. It aims to improve livelihood security and resilience of 246,216 vulnerable people, with a special emphasis on women and girls. The program will work with government and local NGO partners using a variety of strategies to improve and augment the productive assets they have available to them in an environmentally sustainable way in order to reduce their vulnerability context and increase their ability to cope with inevitable set-backs and shocks. Key project activities include: 1) Identify and organize community based organisations to provide services and training; 2) Train service providers at local level in post-harvest storage, preservation, production; 3) Provide guidance to groups on village savings and loans associations; 4) Support most promising local products or services using value chain analysis; and 5) Share gained knowledge with wider network and link projects, partners and countries to influence policy and practice. / Ce projet se concentre sur la sécurité alimentaire et la nutrition ainsi que sur le développement des entreprises et de l'économie. Il vise à améliorer la sécurité et la résilience des moyens de subsistance de 246 216 personnes vulnérables, avec une emphase particulière sur les femmes et les filles. This project aims to improve t...he well-being and survival of children under the age of five in 13 African countries. The project aims to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The three most common services provided in an outreach event are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and early death, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. The project also aims to work with country governments to help them integrate such outreach approaches into their national health strategies and ensure their sustainability over the long term. This project is implemented in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania. / Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 13 pays africains. Pour ce faire, on offre à des enfants des services de nutrition et de santé abordables essentiels à leur survie par l entremise d activités de sensibilisation semestrielles, aussi connues sous le nom de « Journées de la santé des enfants ». Ces activités permettent d offrir des services de santé et de nutrition à des enfants qui, généralement, n ont pas accès au système de soins de santé courant. Les trois principaux services offerts lors de ces activités sont l apport de suppléments de vitamine A afin de prévenir la cécité et la mort prématurée, l immunisation pour prévenir les maladies de l enfance courantes et la fourniture de médicaments vermifuges afin d améliorer la nutrition et la santé globale des enfants. Le projet permet également de collaborer avec les gouvernements des pays afin de les aider à intégrer ce type de démarche de sensibilisation dans leurs stratégies nationales en matière de santé et, ainsi, d assurer leur viabilité à long terme. This project expands Canada s ...support to Renewed Efforts Against Child Hunger and Undernutrition (REACH) in order to support country-led efforts to effectively scale-up nutrition activities to improve health and reduce death in the most vulnerable mothers and children. This project brings REACH into three to four additional countries with high rates of undernutrition, which have joined the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement. REACH provides support that is based on a country s specific needs and level of preparedness for scaling up nutrition interventions, and works to increase government capacity to address undernutrition effectively and sustainably. The coordinated REACH approach ensures more effective and coherent food and nutrition assistance by supporting integrated interventions to link child undernutrition, food security (or access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food), and health. The project also supports the REACH Secretariat, which provides overall coordination and technical expertise to participating countries. REACH is a coordinating mechanism of five United Nations agencies working in the field of nutrition: the United Nations World Food Programme, the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and a recent new member, the International Fund for Agricultural Development. / Ce projet augmente le soutien du Canada au mécanisme REACH (Renewed Efforts Against Child Hunger and Undernutrition) afin d appuyer les efforts des pays visant à élargir la portée des activités en nutrition en vue d améliorer l état de santé et de réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants les plus vulnérables. Le projet permet d introduire REACH dans trois à quatre autres pays qui affichent un taux élevé de dénutrition et qui se sont joints au Mouvement de renforcement de la nutrition (SUN, Scaling Up Nutrition). REACH offre aux pays un soutien adapté à leurs besoins particuliers et à leur état de préparation aux interventions axées sur le renforcement de la nutrition, et il cherche à accroître la capacité du gouvernement de trouver des solutions efficaces et durables aux problèmes de dénutrition. This project aims to reduce de...ath and illness among mothers, newborns and children under the age of five in the surrounding communities of Grand Rivière du Nord and Bahon, in northern Haiti. The project is designed to: (i) improve the ability of health care systems, including community-based health systems, to deliver quality health care that meets the needs of people; (ii) prevent and treat malnutrition among children and mothers; and (iii) improve access to basic primary health care services to reduce the number of women and children dying of common diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. Some project activities include: providing approximately 20 mobile clinics; training approximately 30 community health care workers and community groups; conducting vaccination and de-worming campaigns for children; purchasing equipment and medicine for community health care facilities; training traditional birth attendants; and constructing latrines. Approximately 12,000 families are expected to benefit from this project including over 1,600 pregnant and lactating women. International Needs Canada is working with International Child Care Haiti to implement this project. This project is part of Canada s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. The maximum contribution allocated to this project includes $10,000 for monitoring purposes. / Ce projet vise à réduire les décès et les maladies chez les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans des collectivités environnantes de Grand Rivière du Nord et de Bahon, dans le Nord d Haïti. Le projet a été conçu pour : i) rendre les systèmes de santé, y compris de santé communautaire plus aptes à fournir des soins de santé de qualité qui couvrent les besoins de la population; ii) prévenir et traiter la malnutrition chez les mères et les enfants; iii) améliorer l accès aux soins de base en santé primaire afin de réduire le nombre de décès causés chez les femmes et les enfants par des maladies, telles que la malaria et le VIH/sida. As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. They work with five other Canadian universities, together with researchers and municipal governments in seven cities in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.How this research will make a differenceThe research team will analyze formal and informal urban food systems in the partner cities, how they interact, how they are governed, and their respective contribution to food security and inclusive growth.This project will:-provide evidence of entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities in the urban informal food system;-identify potential opportunities for women and youth to be incorporated as entrepreneurs and employees with decent jobs;-deliver knowledge through workshops, training, and consultations to inform policy and practice at the municipal level on enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the informal food economy;-support 24 students (one post-doctoral, three PhD and 20 master's students) to develop research and collaborate with their Canadian peers; and-offer six policy workshops on urban food security and inclusive growth.The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding this project. The program's overall objectiv...e is to support community-driven sustainable development and to improve the living conditions for rural poor of the State of Andhra Pradesh in India. Implemented in partnership with Bala Vikasa, the program includes two main strategies: 1) improving the living conditions of women, children/youth and farmers with the provision of safe water (bore wells, purification systems) and sanitation (household toilets), improved access to basic education and skills training, the development of organic farming technology and methods, and de-silting of water reservoirs and fertilization; and 2) investing in people's knowledge and capacity building with the development and delivery of thematic training on rural community development for practionners from NGOs, local governments, universities, and the publication/dissemination of best practices and lessons learned. Local Partner: Bala Vikasa. / Le programme a pour objectif d'appuyer le développement durable axé sur la communauté et d'améliorer les conditions de vie des habitants de l'État de Andhra Pradesh en Inde. Exécuté en partenariat avec Bala Vikasa, le programme est composé de deux principales stratégies : 1) améliorer les conditions de vie des femmes, des enfants/jeunes et des agriculteurs par l'approvisionnement en eau et assainissement, l'accès à l'éducation de base et la formation continue, le développement de l'agriculture biologique, et l'épandage de limon pour la fertilisation des terres agricoles; 2) le développement des connaissances et des capacité auprès des praticiens (ONG, gouvernements locaux, universités) du développement rural et communautaire, et la communication des meilleures pratiques et des leçons apprises. Building Research Partnerships... for Children s Nutritional Status in Africa

Nutrition plays a critical rol...e in the health of children in Africa. This research support project will provide funding to researchers to assess children s food consumption patterns and their nutritional status in Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. The research will allow policymakers to address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region through informed programs and policies. The main objective is to support a project development workshop involving investigators from Ghana, Kenya, and Zambia. The research team is expected to finalize a protocol for a three-year study focusing on the food consumption patterns and nutritional status of children aged 6 to 14 in primary schools in the three countries. The project will be implemented in partnership with each countries Ministries of Health and Education. Working in the three countries will provide an opportunity to document the sociocultural determinants of food consumption.More specifically, the project aims to:-refine the research questions, objectives, and overall methodological framework;-develop study instruments, including questionnaires, data forms, flow charts, and consent forms;-discuss the budget proposal and costing;-discuss dissemination strategies; and,-discuss the project s monitoring and evaluation strategy.
