|
This activity implemented by U...NICEF and the Ministry of Public Health will reduce mortality and morbidity due to diarrhea among children under five in Afghanistan by providing them Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) and Zinc. The activity will: 1) Equip community health workers and health providers at Primary Health Care Facilities (PHCs) with skills in management of diarrhea using Zinc and ORS; 2) Raise awareness among caregivers and communities of Zinc and ORS as an effective treatment for diarrhea management; and 3) Ensure that PHCs and health posts have adequate stocks of Zinc and ORS. Key activities include revising the curriculum and training of community health workers, conducting a communication campaign for raising awareness, and procuring co-packaged Zinc and ORS for distribution to health providers.

World Bank Multi-Donor Trust F...und: Partnership For Nutrition
more
|
Funding of this initiative sup...ports the World Bank's Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF). The MDTF was established to better support nutrition interventions for children and mothers in Pakistan. The program is national in coverage and supports the implementation of provincial government' nutrition strategies and programs in an environment where responsibility for the provision of health services has been devolved from the Federal government to provincial governments. The Bank is establishing International Development Association loans for nutrition projects in Sindh and Punjab. The MDTF will complement the loans and allow nutrition interventions to be implemented at scale nationally, ensuring that smaller, less well-resourced provinces can finance programs based on their nutrition strategies and thus enabling Pakistan to sustain an effective response to malnutrition. The total value of this initiative is $41 million over 4 years, starting 2012-13.

Health LAUNCH is an open innov...ation process that seeks to discover new solutions to intractable development challenges facing the Indo-Pacific region. The programme will focus on malnutrition caused by poor food intakes and seeks to (i) reduce the amount of permanent stunting and wasting and under 5 deaths caused by under nutrition in the Indo-Pacific and (ii) reduce the incidence of non-communicable disease caused by malnutrition. Currently up to 50 per cent of all child hood deaths in the region are caused by under nutrition and up to 1 in 2 children are physically or mentally stunted as a result of chronic under nutrition in the first thousand days of life. 98 per cent of all Tongans are at medium to high risk of premature death as a result of non-communicable disease. This initiative is a co-investment between Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and USAID valued at $2.3 million over 3 years, starting 2015-16.

Australia's contribution suppo...rts the World Food Programme's Integrated Approach to Addressing Hunger and Nutrition in Ukhia and Teknaf Upazilas of Cox's Bazar District in Bangladesh. The program includes a comprehensive, multi-layered package of interventions which aims to address longer term causes of under nutrition and hunger by improving: maternal and childhood nutrition; and school enrolment, attendance and retention. The specific objectives include: reduced prevalence of under nutrition among women and children to break the intergenerational cycle of under nutrition; increased access to pre-primary and primary education for children; and increased productive assets of ultra poor households through diversified economic activities. Australia's contribution will: provide high energy biscuits fortified with micronutrients to over 75 000 school children each day; assist 700 ultra poor women to participate in the food security and livelihood activities to improve their diet, send their children to school and establish small businesses; and benefit 1000 pregnant women and breast feeding mothers and 4800 children to receive high nutrient food supplements and maternal and child nutritional and hygiene care training. The total value of this initiative is $1.7 million over two years, starting 2012-13.
