This initiative aims to improv...e the lives and incomes of 10,000 poor and vulnerable farming households (approximately 80,000 people) through agriculture-driven economic growth. The project is providing training and related technical support in modern farming methods to farmers in order to increase yields for selected commodity and livestock value chains. The project also aims to improve the business environment to make it more favourable for farmers, women and youth. Project activities seek to increase market access, generate employment and improve nutrition for vulnerable women and children./ L'initiative vise à améliorer la vie de 10,000 ménages pauvres (environ 80 000 personnes) pratiquant l'agriculture à petite échelle grâce à une croissance économique axée sur l'agriculture.

November 2016 - The humanitari...an crisis arising from the 2015-2016 El Niño is continuing to deepen, with the United Nations estimating that more than 60 million people are now affected worldwide. While international donors, including Canada, have already stepped up with humanitarian assistance to save lives and protect livelihoods, a significant funding gap persists and humanitarian needs are expected to escalate well into 2017. The impact is most pronounced in Ethiopia, which experienced its worst drought in 50 years, leaving 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance. In the Americas, Haiti is one of the most affected countries, with a third consecutive year of drought, exacerbated by El Niño, leaving more than 3.6 million people food insecure. Similar impacts are being felt around the globe. To date, twenty three countries have appealed for help to meet critical needs, including food, agricultural support, and water and sanitation. In part with Canada's support, the World Food Program (WFP) is helping to meet the emergency food needs of drought-affected people in some of the countries and regions worst hit by El Niño, including: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan in eastern Africa; Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe in southern Africa; El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua in the Americas, and Papua New Guinea in the Asia Pacific region. Although specific programming differs based on each country context, WFP is saving lives and protecting livelihoods through the provision of direct general food assistance, cash-for-work or food-for-work schemes, and targeted supplementary feeding for particularly vulnerable groups.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya.

This initiative aims to improv...e the health and nutrition status of poor and vulnerable mothers, newborns and children in select regions by working with local health authorities. It will directly address malnutrition in the first 1000 days of children's lives in targeted districts and inform national nutrition policies in the targeted countries. Malnutrition is the cause of over 3 million child deaths annually and results in illnesses such as stunting, wasting and anemia, as well as poor motor, cognitive and social development. The initiative will be implemented in Bangladesh (Thakurgaon District), Myanmar (Thabaung Township), Kenya (Elgeyo Marakwet county), Pakistan (Sukkur District), and Tanzania (Singida and Shinyanga Regions). The effects of malnutrition in these countries are significant as collectively they represent 13% of the global burden of stunting, 15% of the global burden of severe anaemia and 12% of the global burden of wasting. Such illnesses are especially pronounced in rural regions, such as those targeted by the project. The initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 2 million individuals, including more than 835,000 women, 740,000 children and 490,000 men, and indirectly reach an estimated 2.5 million individuals who are not targeted by the project but who will benefit from the strengthened health system and improved health services. Policy changes in nutrition and wider application of existing policies as a result of the project advocacy efforts will also have positive impact on indirect beneficiaries. In addition, the initiative's activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 3 million Canadians. Activities include: (1) recruiting, training and equipping community healthcare workers to promote and provide essential health services; (2) training local health councils in improved data analysis and reporting to inform planning and delivery of MNCH services; (3) raising awareness of key nutritional practices, including dietary diversity; (4) providing inputs and training in the development of home gardens; (5) informing and increasing community participation in policy dialogue with governments on MNCH issues; and, (6) implementing interactive media and linking Canadians with empowered youth in a mentorship program to improve the knowledge and ability of Canadians to engage in international MNCH and nutrition issues. It is implemented by World Vision Canada in collaboration with the Micronutrient Initiative, HarvestPlus, the Canadian Society for International Health, the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the Hospital for Sick Children. Project implementation is also supported by the following local partners: in Bangladesh: World Vision Bangladesh, Institute of Public Health Nutrition, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh - Office of the Civil Surgeon Thakugaon; in Myanmar: World Vision International - Myanmar,

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions.

The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda.

This project aims at improving... the nutritional security of populations living in the Kolda and Kédougou regions by focussing on preventing new cases of malnutrition, especially amongst women and young children. These regions show malnutrition rates significantly higher than the national average, resulting in child mortality rates twice as high as the national average. The project seeks to reduce malnutrition by adopting an integrated approach consisting of the following three components: 1) promote better nutrition practices for vulnerable populations; 2) support communities in the production of more nutritious food; 3) strengthen the capacity of the government at the local, regional and national levels to deliver nutrition or nutrition-sensitive programmes. Project activities include: 1) train and provide equipment to 1,775 health workers to deliver behaviour change communication messages on appropriate nutritional practices to approximately 35,000 influential in household food consumption decision-making (mainly women); 2) support the development and delivery of community services related to maternal and child nutrition to 31,000 pregnant and lactating women and approximately 50,500 children under five; 3) implement community initiatives to improve the production and distribution of nutrient-rich food by 30,000 households, including training on good agricultural practices and support to the development of local entrepreneurship; 4) train and provide equipment to local and regional government structures leading to a better inclusion of nutrition issues in the design, implementation, coordination and monitoring of development plans.

In part with Canada's support, UNICEF is helping to meet the emergency food needs of drought-affected people in some of the countries and regions worst hit by El Nino, including: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan in eastern Africa; Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe in southern Africa; and Mongolia, and the Pacific islands in the Asia Pacific region. Although specific programming differs based on each country context, UNICEF is saving lives and protecting livelihoods through the treatment or prevention of acute malnutrition, the provision of safe water and sanitation, and other activities designed to meet the specific needs of vulnerable women and children.

The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of GAC and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 36 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in Africa.

Gender-based inequalities alon...g the food production chain from farm to plate reduce people's ability to achieve food and nutritional security in developing countries. This project will examine this challenge through a book featuring the latest research and results. It aims to expand global conversations on gender and food security.Supporting women as producers and caretakersTo maximize the impact of agricultural development on food security, governments and communities must enhance women's roles as agricultural producers and primary caretakers for their families. Phase 1 of the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund's (CIFSRF) emphasized integrating gender considerations into food security research. Activities included assessing the extent of gender integration in projects and holding a workshop to strengthen gender analysis and integration, and monitoring skills. Sharing findings on gender and food securityIDRC held a writeshop in Edmonton during the International Food Security Dialogue to document gender results from CIFSRF projects. An editorial team from IDRC and the University of Alberta worked with authors to refine their papers. Participants completed 13 papers and chapters, which will be published in book format. This will make the findings more widely accessible to researchers, academics, policymakers, and development practitioners.Evidence from Africa, Asia, and Latin AmericaThe book provides empirical evidence and explores the gendered dimensions of food security. Drawing on studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, it -investigates how food security and gender inequity are conceptualized within interventions -assesses the impacts and outcomes of gender-responsive programs on food security and gender equity-addresses diverse approaches to gender research and practice New perspectives for a growing fieldThe papers draw on diverse theoretical perspectives, including transformative learning, feminist theory, deliberative democracy (where deliberation is central to decision-making), and technology adoption. The collection makes an important contribution to the growing literature on the challenges of gender equity in agricultural production.

The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years.

The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN)... Movement Secretariat plays a coordination and facilitative role for the SUN Movement in order to improve nutrition outcomes in developing countries, particularly for women and children under five, in the 56 member countries and states. Project activities include: (1) monitoring and tracking country level progress;(2) linking the various member networks of the SUN Movement with country requests for support; (3) mobilizing resources to address malnutrition; and (4) ensuring the activities of the networks, including United Nations, Business, and Civil Society networks, are aligned with the Movement. Building on the achievements of the first two phases of funding (2012 and 2014), this initiative supports the operationalization of the new SUN movement strategy for 2016-2020 including transition of the Movement to its new phase. This initiative supports the development of roadmaps for each member network and ensures continuous support to the SUN countries and networks to achieve better results.

Canada is providing additional... funding for one year (2016) to the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research's (CGIAR) Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) research program to fund additional activities as part of the extension of the research program until 2016. This funding complements Canada's $20 million in funding for 2013-2015. A4NH seeks to strengthen the contribution of agricultural development to the health and nutrition of the poor and undernourished. Led by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the program conducts research and develops technologies and approaches in four complementary areas: Value chains for enhanced nutrition and health, biofortification of staple crops, and integrated programs and harmonized policies on agriculture, nutrition, and health focus on improving diet quality, whereas prevention and control of agriculture-associated diseases works to reduce exposure to food-borne disease and to diseases with important agricultural risk factors. All four areas contribute to the empowerment of women and communities and to supporting an enabling policy environment. The program builds partnerships, including with the private sector, to develop, use and disseminate technologies and tools for improved food security, nutrition and health.

March 2016 - In 2016, an estim...ated 8.7 million people across South Sudan are affected by the effects of armed conflict and inter-communal violence, economic decline, disease, and climatic shocks. Nearly 1.7 million are internally displaced within South Sudan and over 640,000 South Sudanese have sought protection in neighbouring countries. The civil war, as well as erratic rainfall in some areas, has driven 3.9 million people into severe food insecurity, with malnutrition rates over emergency thresholds. Outbreaks of cholera, measles, and hepatitis E have strained an already overwhelmed health system. Humanitarian access remains restricted in many conflict areas and large numbers of people are accessible only by air drops. With GAC 's support, Concern Worldwide is helping to improve health and living conditions for up to 77,028 vulnerable internally displaced and vulnerable conflict-affected people in Unity State and Central Equatoria State, South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) constructing 20 new water points and rehabilitating two boreholes for 38,000 people in the Bentiu Protection of Civilians site and providing a community water point in Bentiu Town; (2) constructing 450 communal latrines benefitting up to 9,000 people and providing hygiene promotion training; (3) providing temporary shelter materials to 600 households and providing 3,000 relief kits; and (4) constructing or rehabilitating eight nutrition centers, and providing supplemental feeding to improve malnutrition in children under five and in pregnant and lactating women.

It is implemented by World Vision Canada in collaboration with the Micronutrient Initiative, HarvestPlus, the Canadian Society for International Health, the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the Hospital for Sick Children.
