The World Food Programme (WFP)... is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by getting food to the hungry quickly, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; (3) providing food for work activities; (4) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) supporting emergency school feeding programs. With the support of DFATD and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 17 million people affected by conflict, acute food insecurity and political instability in select countries in the Central and Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions. / Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il répond aux urgences, sauve des vies grâce à l'acheminement rapide de vivres aux personnes affamées et contribue à prévenir la faim. En cas de situation d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'occupe principalement d'offrir de l'assistance alimentaire pour réduire la malnutrition aigue et l'insécurité alimentaire et protéger les moyens de subsistance. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) distribuer des aliments; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) offrir des programmes de vivres contre travail; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat d'aliments; 5) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth. Other areas of focus are promoting good governance through public sector institutions; supporting private sector development by creating an enabling environment and promoting entrepreneurship; improving health outcomes by improving food security and education. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University de Terre-Neuve permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans cinq pays, soit au Cambodge, au Vietnam, aux Philippines, en Afrique du Sud et au Malawi. L'ensemble des stages vise la régie de l'environnement de manière durable. Les stages ont pour objectifs spécifiques la sécurité alimentaire, la stimulation de la croissance économique durable et l'assurance de l'avenir des enfants et des jeunes. Les autres domaines de concentration sont la promotion de la bonne gouvernance par l'entremise des institutions du secteur public; l'appui à la croissance du secteur privé en créant un environnement favorable et en favorisant l'entrepreneuriat; et l'amélioration des résultats en matière de santé en renforçant la sécurité alimentaire et l'éducation.

This project aims to work, ove...r a four year period, in collaboration with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and to their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project will address this inequality by improving the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H'Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam). Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives. The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 women) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component. This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam. Both the Banke district and Lai Chau province are among the poorest areas in the two countries with high mortality rates and the least access to essential health services. / Ce projet s'étend sur une période de quatre ans et repose sur une collaboration avec les gouvernements locaux du Népal et du Vietnam pour rendre les services et les interventions de santé dont ils ont besoin accessibles aux enfants de moins de deux ans et à leurs mères. This initiative aims to improv...e the nutritional status of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children under 5 years, while working with local health authorities. Activities include: (1) training health workers to provide education on and identify, monitor and treat malnutrition in mothers, pregnant and breastfeeding women and infants and children under 5 years; (2) delivering campaigns to encourage optimal breastfeeding, establishing household and school gardens to grow a diversity of nutritious foods, and holding cooking demonstrations to encourage use of new and unfamiliar foods; (3) constructing, rehabilitating and maintaining community water sources; and, (4) raising awareness on good water, sanitation and hygiene practices, as well as promoting open dialogue on gender norms and distribution of food, resources and assets within households and across household members. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 190,000 women, children and men directly, and over 1 million individuals indirectly. The initiative is being implemented in Malawi (Dowa and Ntchisi districts), Mozambique (Funahlouro and Homoine districts) and Zambia (Mpika and Shiwa Ng'andu districts). It is implemented through a consortium led by Care Canada, and including McGill University, CUSO International, and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development. Project implementation is also supported by the following local partners: in Malawi: Development Aid from People to People; in Mozambique: Associação Para Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Mulher, Associação Juvenil para a Educação e Promoção de Juventude, and REDE Pastoral de Homoine; and in Zambia: the National Food and Nutrition Commission and the CSO SUN Alliance. / Le projet vise à améliorer l'état nutritionnel des femmes en âge de procréer (15 à 49 ans) et des enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. November 2016 - The humanitari...an crisis arising from the 2015-2016 El Niño is continuing to deepen, with the United Nations estimating that more than 60 million people are now affected worldwide. While international donors, including Canada, have already stepped up with humanitarian assistance to save lives and protect livelihoods, a significant funding gap persists and humanitarian needs are expected to escalate well into 2017. The impact is most pronounced in Ethiopia, which experienced its worst drought in 50 years, leaving 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance. In the Americas, Haiti is one of the most affected countries, with a third consecutive year of drought, exacerbated by El Niño, leaving more than 3.6 million people food insecure. Similar impacts are being felt around the globe. To date, twenty three countries have appealed for help to meet critical needs, including food, agricultural support, and water and sanitation. In part with Canada's support, the World Food Program (WFP) is helping to meet the emergency food needs of drought-affected people in some of the countries and regions worst hit by El Niño, including: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan in eastern Africa; Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe in southern Africa; El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua in the Americas, and Papua New Guinea in the Asia Pacific region. Although specific programming differs based on each country context, WFP is saving lives and protecting livelihoods through the provision of direct general food assistance, cash-for-work or food-for-work schemes, and targeted supplementary feeding for particularly vulnerable groups.

Several seasons of failed rains in countries throughout the region have left nearly 30 million people facing food insecurity. In Zimbabwe, the drought has affected more than 2 million people, and this number is expected to rise to more than 4 million by the beginning of 2017. Global acute malnutrition rates have risen to their highest level in fifteen years and water shortages have increased the risk of the spread of water-borne disease and lead to the death of some 25,000 cattle. With GAC's support, Development and Peace is addressing the humanitarian needs of an estimated 47,850 drought-affected people in the Mudzi District of Mashonaland East Province in north-eastern Zimbabwe. Through support to the local health authorities, Development and Peace is improving access to screening and treatment for acute malnutrition in target communities. The provision of agricultural inputs (seeds, tools, small livestock) to vulnerable households is improving food security and the repair or rehabilitation of local water points is providing access to safe water, thus saving lives and protecting livelihoods.

This project aims to meet the ...basic health needs of women and children under five years of age in the Badghis, Ghor and Herat provinces by addressing malnutrition. The project is aligned with the nutrition path of the Muskoka Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Initiative and the priorities of the Afghan Ministry of Public Health and seeks to improve the ability of the formal health system and local communities to address malnutrition in a sustainable way.Project activities include: (1) identifying communities with a high prevalence of underweight children and rolling out proven community-level approaches to tackle malnutrition; (2) establishing and maintaining public awareness programs on maternal and child nutrition; (3) rehabilitating and protecting community-based drinking water sources to prevent diarrhea; (4) promoting and supporting diverse diets that include animal and plant food sources, as well as techniques to better preserve and prepare food; (5) training health facility staff in proven approaches to nutrition counselling and growth monitoring targeted at pregnant women and mothers with children under two years of age; (6) equipping health facilities in the targeted areas to effectively provide preventative and curative nutrition services, as well as managing childhood illness that contributes to malnutrition; (7) promoting the inclusion of public nutrition training in community midwife and nursing education curricula, and in national guidelines on the provision of community-level nutrition services; and (8) supporting public nutrition offices at the provincial level to plan, implement and evaluate maternal, neonatal and child health strategies and programs.In April 2015, USAID entered into a delegated cooperation agreement with DFATD and made a contribution of $3,122,250 to the Maternal and Under-Five Nutrition and Child Health project. This contribution is listed under project A035243-004. These additional funds will increase the project coverage in Badghis, Ghor and Herat provinces. The total budget of the project is $12,122,250.This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn, and child health commitment./ Le projet vise à combler les besoins de santé de base des femmes et des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans les provinces de Herat, Ghor et Badghis en luttant contre la malnutrition. This project aims to improve d...ietary diversity, enhance food security, ensure access to clean water and provide hygiene education and access to essential sanitation facilities in the Kandahar, Bamyan and Wardak provinces. More specifically, it focuses on the provision of life-saving services for the identification and treatment of acute malnutrition in children under five in Kandahar province and the prevention of malnutrition in Bamyan and Wardak. This initiative aims to use a holistic approach, addressing the improvement of infant and young child feeding practices, nutrition for pregnant and lactating women, dietary diversity and family food preparation, early care seeking for common causes of under-five morbidity and mortality, and hygiene and sanitation promotion. Project activities include: (1) providing training in nutrition, dietary diversity, family food preparation; (2) providing training in establishment and maintenance of kitchen gardening; (3) distributing vegetable seeds; (4) equipping and providing ongoing support and supervision for the treatment of the common coexisting childhood illnesses in children; (5) building or rehabilitating water point and latrines for communities, schools, and clinics; and (6) providing training on improved hygiene and sanitation. The project also follows an integrated approach to address under-nutrition, whereby nutrition as well as targeted water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) actions are undertaken to address the two major factors of acute malnutrition in Afghanistan: water borne diseases, and inappropriate child care feeding practices.Project activities include: (1) launching a public awareness campaign centred on the promotion of seven essential nutrition actions through public radio spots to enhance care and feeding practices of women and children under-five; (2) training community health workers to enable them to screen and refer cases of severely malnourished children to effectively treat severe acute malnutrition cases; (3) construction and rehabilitation of water points and distribution of biosand filters for household water treatment; and (4) providing gender-specific sanitation facilities that provide access to sanitation and improve overall community hygiene./ Ce projet vise à combler les lacunes existant dans la capacité à réduire la malnutrition chez les enfants de moins de cinq ans et les femmes enceintes et allaitantes dans la province du Ghor en Afghanistan. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children.Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation.Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. This contribution represents C...anada's long-term institutional support to the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), a non-profit international health research, service, and training institution. icddr,b uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate.icddr,b's mandate is to provide free, high quality health care for the poor in Bangladesh, including maternal and child health services and treatment for diarrhoeal and other diseases. It also supports research that is designed to generate the data needed to develop policies and practices to address significant health challenges in Bangladesh and other countries.Canada's support to icddr,b contributes to ensuring that icddr,b is providing effective, evidence-based, gender-responsive health care and health education services for the poor. It also ensures that the icddr,b can continue to conduct important health research that translates into policies that can help to improve the health and reduce poverty levels of Bangladeshis. Canada's institutional support is also helping to strengthen the management systems and improve the sustainability of the Centre./ Cette contribution représente le soutien institutionnel à long terme du Canada au Centre international de recherche sur les maladies diarrhéiques du Bangladesh (CIRMD – Bangladesh), un institut international de recherche, de services et de formation dans le secteur de la santé à but non lucratif. Le CIRMD utilise ces fonds, ainsi que ceux octroyés par d'autres donateurs, pour mener à bien son mandat.Le CIRMD a pour mandat d'offrir gratuitement des soins de santé de qualité aux personnes démunies du Bangladesh, y compris des services de santé maternelle et infantile et un traitement des maladies diarrhéiques, entre autres. This project aims to improve t...he health of mothers, newborns and children under five in order to improve children's growth and reduce death in 14 poor districts in Bangladesh. The corrective actions for each district address shortages and bottlenecks in the public health care system, respond to communication issues, train health service providers and expand cold storage to accommodate the introduction of new vaccines. The project activities are integrated in the Operational Plans of the Health Population and Nutrition Sector Development Program of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.The project empowers families and women with knowledge about available services and the standard of service they should expect. Over 1.5 million women and 5.8 million young children in Bangladesh are expected to benefit from this project./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans afin d'améliorer la croissance des enfants et de réduire le taux de mortalité dans 14 districts pauvres au Bangladesh. Les mesures correctives prises dans chaque district visent à remédier aux manques et aux engorgements dans le système de soins de santé public, à régler les problèmes de communications, à former des fournisseurs de services de santé et à prévoir plus d'espace pour la réfrigération des nouveaux vaccins. Les activités du projet sont intégrées aux plans opérationnels du Programme de développement des secteurs de la santé, de la population et de la nutrition du Ministère de la Santé et de la Protection de la famille.Le projet permet aux familles et aux femmes de connaître les services disponibles et les normes de services auxquelles elles devraient s'attendre. Il est attendu que ce projet profite à plus de 1,5 million de femmes et à 5,8 millions de jeunes enfants au Bangladesh.

It also focuses on improving food security and nutrition in marginalized indigenous populations. Nutritious food products are harvested, processed and sold by the women's federations to the school breakfast program to improve the nutrition and health of local children. Women entrepreneurs increase their agricultural production and their capacity to process food and to market these. They benefit from training, equipment and materials. The local partner for this project is 'Fundacion RENACE'. The project takes place in the La Paz department./ Ce projet vise à augmenter le revenu des femmes entrepreneures dans six fédérations de femmes autochtones. Il se concentre également sur l'amélioration de la sécurité alimentaire et de la nutrition des populations autochtones marginalisées. Des produits alimentaires nutritifs sont récoltés, transformés et vendus par les fédérations de femmes au programme de petit-déjeuner des écoles pour améliorer la nutrition et la santé des enfants. Les femmes entrepreneures augmentent leur production agricole et leur capacité à transformer les aliments et à les vendre. Elles bénéficient de formations, d'équipement et de matériel. Le partenaire local pour ce projet est 'Fundacion RENACE'. Ce projet a lieu dans le département de La Paz.

This project aims to strengthe...n income generation and promote maternal and child health, nutrition, hygiene, access to services, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in 14 municipalities in Chuquisaca, Bolivia. The project beneficiaries are primarily rural and indigenous women and men and municipal governments. Project activities include: (1) support for increasing family enterprise profitability; (2) adopting good health practices related to maternal and child health and SRHR; and (3) strengthening municipal governance in health and local economic development through improved management, coordination and leadership. Empowering rural and indigenous women in economic enterprise management is an important objective of the project./Ce projet vise à renforcer la création de revenus, ainsi qu'à promouvoir la santé maternelle et infantile, la nutrition, l'hygiène, l'accès aux services et la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs (SDSR) dans 14 municipalités de Chuquisaca, en Bolivie. Les bénéficiaires du projet sont principalement des femmes et des hommes issus de communautés autochtones et de communautés rurales, ainsi que les administrations municipales. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) le soutien visant à accroître la rentabilité des entreprises familiales; 2) l'adoption de pratiques d'hygiène exemplaires liées à la santé maternelle et infantile et à la SDSR; 3) le renforcement de la gouvernance municipale en matière de santé et de développement économique local en améliorant la gestion, la coordination et le leadership. Le renforcement du pouvoir des femmes et des hommes issus de communautés autochtones et de communautés rurales en matière de gestion économique des entreprises constitue l'un des objectifs importants du projet.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania./ Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. La plupart des maladies et des décès dans les villages ciblés par le projet étaient causées par des maladies évitables, le manque d'accès à des travailleurs de la santé communautaire et le manque d'accès à de l'eau potable et à une alimentation adéquate.Le projet est mis en œuvre avec des partenaires locaux dans chaque pays : le diocèse anglican de Bujumbura au Burundi, EHALE au Mozambique, et le diocèse anglican de Masasi en Tanzanie.Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. Une formation sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'agriculture durable est également donnée aux agriculteurs et agricultrices.

Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results.This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI)./Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques au Cambodge, en Birmanie, aux Philippines et au Rwanda. The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. This project aims to serve chi...ldren less than five years of age with vitamin A supplementation and de-worming programs in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya. The mortality rate for children less than five years of age is 73/1000 live births in Kenya and 108/1000, in Côte d'Ivoire, in 2015. Vitamin A deficiency and worm infection causes and worsens malnutrition, anemia and diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, which are a leading cause of death for children less than five years of age in these countries. Currently, these services are provided in both countries through schools, leaving children younger than five years unreached; a gap which this project is addressing. This project is providing improved delivery of these essential health services in communities where the actual coverage for children under five years of age is low.Project activities include: (1) increasing access to vitamin A and preventative de-worming treatments using existing community-based delivery systems; (2) strengthening the local health care system by training local health workers and community health volunteers in vitamin A supplementation and de-worming; (3) creating and utilizing a standardized toolkit for training on the implementation of responsive combined deworming and Vitamin A supplementation program targeting pre-school aged children; and (4) improving community engagement around vitamin A deficiency and de-worming in young children through responsive communication and engagement plans implementation as well as participatory activities with communities members, community leaderships and health structures and other gender equality and women's groups.The local partners are the Medical Assistance Programs in Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire which implement this project in 5 regions of Côte d'Ivoire (Gneby-Tiassa-Me, Bélier, Bounkani-Gontougo, Gbeke, Gôh and Indenie Duablin) and in three counties of Kenya (Siaya, Kwale and Kilifi). Vitamin Angels, a US-based NGO, is also a partner and provides in-kind contributions of albendazole (de-worming treatments) and vitamin A supplements for the duration of the project.This project directly impacts 1.4 million children and 16,600 adults working as community health workers or volunteers. This project is part of DFATD'...s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education.The Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean initiative offers 16 internships for Aboriginals in three countries (Burkina Faso, Senegal and Equator) in the fields targeted by the eight local partners, namely ancestral knowledge, maternal health and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, valorisation and transformation of non-timber forest products, adaptation to climate change, environmental education, HIV/AIDS prevention, family planning and reproductive health. The project contributes to increasing male and female Aboriginal youth's employability, providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment or pursue their studies./ Ce projet fait partie de l'initiative des Stages internationaux pour les jeunes Autochtones (SIJA) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD). Ces stages visent à accroître la sensibilisation, l'engagement et la participation des jeunes Autochtones à l'égard du développement international, tout en leur donnant la chance d'élargir leurs compétences professionnelles.L'initiative du Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean permet l'envoi de 16 stagiaires Autochtones dans trois pays (Burkina Faso, Sénégal et Équateur) dans les domaines ciblés par huit partenaires locaux. This project aims to improve h...ousehold food security and nutrition in Ethiopia for an estimated 3.98 million people by promoting widespread adoption of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) varieties amongst growers and consumers of maize.Also known as corn, maize is an essential food source for Ethiopians. QPM is a non-genetically engineered form of maize. The maize contains a naturally derived gene mutation of maize which has a higher content of two essential amino acids necessary to synthesize proteins within the human body after consumption, and provides twice as much nutritional value as common maize.The project supports the adoption of QPM as well as increases in farm productivity and household incomes through the expansion of the maize seed industry. Project activities include: introducing QPM seed and food products to farmers (women and men) engaged in subsistence-level maize production as a means to meet household basic food requirements; disseminating gender-sensitive crop management practices to farmers and agricultural extension officers; and strengthening local capacity of researchers, seed producers, and seed suppliers on the production, distribution, and quality control of QPM seeds.Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia (NuME) is an initiative of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), a member centre of the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research (CGIAR). CIMMYT is implementing the project in collaboration with the Ethiopian Institute for Agriculture Research, Ethiopia's Ministry of Agriculture, Farm Radio International, a Canadian non-governmental organization, and Sasakawa Global 2000 (SG2000), an international non-governmental organization./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition et la sécurité alimentaire pour environ 3,98 millions d'Éthiopiens en encourageant l'adoption à grande échelle de variétés de maïs de haute qualité protéique (QPM) par les producteurs et les consommateurs de maïs.Le maïs est une source essentielle de nourriture pour les Éthiopiens. Proper nutrition is critical t...o the development of children in the first 1000 days of life, and in Ethiopia, malnutrition contributes to more than half of child deaths. The proposed five-year project seeks to improve the nutritional status of Women of Reproductive Age (WRA, 15-49) and boys and girls under 5 years (U5) in the Oromia and Amhara Regions of Ethiopia. The project will directly benefit 85,500 people and will indirectly benefit 1,700,000 people. The three project outcomes – (i) improving maternal and U5 nutrition and caregiving practices, (ii) improving nutrition-sensitive practices, and (iii) strengthening governance of gender-sensitive nutrition programs – will be supported by activities such as training on cooking and feeding demonstrations, developing and disseminating nutrition-related materials, establishing of homestead and school vegetable gardens, community mapping of hygiene and sanitation conditions, and the deployment of Canadian volunteer nutrition and technical experts. The project will be implemented by a CARE Canada-led consortium including: CARE Ethiopia, CARE USA, CUSO International and the McGill Institute for Global Food Security. / Une bonne nutrition est essentielle au développement des enfants au cours des 1000 premiers jours de la vie, et en Éthiopie, la malnutrition contribue à plus de la moitié des décès d'enfants. It directly benefits 21,000 rural residents, half of whom are women and girls. Project activities contribute to increasing the capacity of local institutions to formulate evidence-based policy, develop programs, and produce adult education materials. The project supports the Gover...nment of Ghana in improving food security by transforming the agriculture sector to one that is more modern, equitable and sustainable. The project seeks to implement a comprehensive market-oriented approach to farming and to strengthen and modernize agricultural extension services at the national, regional and district levels. The project is expected to reach more than 12,000,000 Ghanaians.Project activities include: (1) delivery of agricultural extension services (information related to appropriate use of fertilizers, pesticides, implements, improved cultural practices and useful knowledge related to improving the well-being of the farm family and the farming community) and market-oriented training to farm households; (2) equip District Agricultural Departments and Regional Agricultural Departments with extension materials, equipment and logistical support; (3) support innovative, demand-driven and market-oriented research for smallholder farmers; and (4) update and reorient a standardized curriculum for Agricultural Colleges and Farm Institutes to be market-focused, gender sensitive and integrate environmental sustainability./Le projet aide le gouvernement du Ghana à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire en transformant le secteur agricole de façon à le rendre plus moderne, équitable et durable. The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives.In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services.In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. This project aims to improve a...ccess to safe, sufficient and nutritious food for women, men, girls and boys in Guatemala. The project supports the World Food Programme's (WFP) Purchase for Progress (P4P) Program in Guatemala. It promotes an integrated strategy comprising three components: i) Purchase for Progress, which improves the incomes of smallholder farmers through the increased quantity and quality of production and sales of surpluses to markets; ii) Scaling-up Nutrition, which helps prevent and reduce chronic malnutrition through distribution of fortified food and nutrition education; and iii) Resilience, which improves community conditions in disaster-prone areas, and enhances food availability throughout the year.Project activities include the following: (1) providing technical assistance to and sharing best practices with small-scale farmers on crop management and technologies to increase the quality and quantity of their yields; (2) promoting better post-harvest management to reduce crop losses; (3) assisting farmer organizations to increase sales and receive fair market prices from buyers; (4) purchasing food from participating farmer organizations' crop surpluses to feed up to 17,500 infants and children aged 6-23 months per year and up to 10,000 pregnant and lactating women per year to complement breastfeeding and prevent stunting or chronic undernutrition; and (5) strengthening the business management skills of small-scale farmer organizations and increasing women farmers' participation, representation and skills./ Le projet vise à améliorer l'accès à des aliments salubres et nutritifs en quantité suffisante pour les femmes, les hommes, les filles et les garcons au Guatemala. Le projet appuie l'initiative « Achats au service du progrès » du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) et l'initiative «Renforcement de la nutrition - SUN» au Guatemala. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities./ Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international.Pour assurer l'avenir des jeunes et des collectivités, l'initiative internationale de Cuso International offre 40 stages de deux ans à l'intention des Canadiens et Canadiennes. Alternatives et l'Association ...pour la promotion de la Santé intégrale de la Famille (APROSIFA) proposent de poursuivre le programme de lutte contre la dénutrition infantile menée depuis septembre 2015 dans le quartier Carrefour-Feuilles à Port-au-Prince. En s'appuyant sur l'expérience et les enseignements tirés jusqu'ici, cette deuxième phase de 24 mois vise à élargir l'intervention pour atteindre 700 autres enfants en situation de dénutrition extrême ainsi que 200 femmes, à diversifier les cultures de la pépinière, à renforcer l'implication de la population aux pratiques d'agriculture urbaine (potagers familiaux et compostage à partir de déchets domestiques) et à établir de nouveaux partenariats, notamment avec le ministère de la Santé et de la Population (MSPP) pour assurer la pérennité du projet. Cette phase de consolidation continuera de s'appuyer sur une approche holistique de la santé qui promeut une participation active des mères, de leurs enfants et d'autres intervenants en vue d'une véritable prise en charge de la dénutrition infantile.

This project aims to increase ...access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food and improve the health of 8,000 people in the commune of Saint-Marc, in Haiti's Artibonite region, by intensifying and diversifying agricultural production while promoting public health. It encourages male and female producers to adopt new agricultural practices that are better adapted to ecological principles and nutritional needs. Specifically, the project aims to strengthen the teaching and applied research capacities of the State University of Haiti, building a sustainable partnership among the university, public health agencies, and the local community. The initiative is designed to help 16,000 people improve their understanding of nutritional health (helping them to improve their own health), and increase the incomes of 2,600 women in Saint-Marc./ Ce projet vise à accroître l'accès à des aliments sains et nutritifs en quantité suffisante et à améliorer la santé de 8 000 habitants de la commune de Saint-Marc, dans la région d'Artibonite, en intensifiant et en diversifiant la production agricole, tout en faisant la promotion de la santé publique. Le projet encourage les producteurs (des hommes et des femmes) à adopter de nouvelles politiques agricoles tenant plus compte des principes écologiques et des besoins nutritionnels. Le projet vise spécifiquement à renforcer les capacités de l'Université d'État d'Haïti au chapitre de l'enseignement et de la recherche appliquée, en établissant un partenariat durable entre l'Université, les organismes de santé publique et la collectivité locale. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés.
