This project is part of Global... Affairs Canada's International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy. The IYIP is designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience in international development.The Carrefour de solidarité internationale sends 112 interns to four countries as part of the Professional Internships project. A significant proportion of internships aim to promote democracy and gender equality. The other internships seek to support eco-friendly economic development and food security./Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages internationaux pour les jeunes (PSIJ) d'Affaires mondiales Canada, financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens détenant un diplôme d'études postsecondaires la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en développement international.Dans le cadre du projet Stages professionnels, le Carrefour de solidarité internationale envoie 112 stagiaires dans quatre pays. Une proportion importante des stages vise à promouvoir la démocratie et l'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. Les autres stages visent à appuyer le développement économique respectueux de l'environnement et la sécurité alimentaire.

The Improving Maternal Partici...pation and Access to Community Training (IMPACT) project increases the utilization and improve the delivery of culturally appropriate health services to pregnant & lactating mothers and their children in 111 hard-to-reach indigenous communities in Guatemala and Honduras. Activities include: (1) providing Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) centres with essential health care equipment and ensuring that they are adequately staffed with well-trained MNCH Aides; (2) delivery of lactation workshops, as well as one-on-one counseling and support, to encourage women to initiate early and exclusive breastfeeding of their infants for at least 5 months; (3) delivering awareness raising workshops among key decision-makers in communities of MNCH related health risks, and enabling the health-related decision-making of vulnerable women, and (4) delivery of nutrition demonstration workshops to pregnant and lactating women. This project is expected to contribute to the improved health of 68,400 women and children, including 13,800 girls and 13, 300 boys. In addition, more than 160,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly. CAUSE Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with CAUSE Honduras, CAUSE Guatemala and Instituticion Mam de Desarrollo Integral (IMDI)./ Le projet vise à accroître l'utilisation des services de santé adaptés à la culture et à en améliorer la prestation aux femmes enceintes et qui allaitent et à leurs enfants dans 111 collectivités autochtones difficiles à atteindre du Guatemala et du Honduras. Parmi les activités connexes se trouvent : 1) fournir aux centres de soins de santé à la mère, au nouveau-né et à l'enfant (SMNE) de l'équipement sanitaire essentiel et s'assurer qu'ils disposent d'un nombre suffisant d'aides biens formés en matière de SMNE; 2) la prestation d'ateliers sur la lactation, ainsi que de services de consultation et de soutien individuels, pour encourager les femmes à pratiquer rapidement l'allaitement exclusif de leur nourrisson, et ce, jusqu'à au moins cinq mois; 3) la prestation d'ateliers de sensibilisation auprès des principaux décideurs communautaires sur les risques pour la santé liés à la SMNE et d'un soutien accru à la prise de décisions concernant la santé pour les femmes vulnérables et 4) la prestation d'ateliers de démonstration sur la nutrition à des femmes enceintes et qui allaitent. Ce projet devrait contribuer à améliorer la santé de 68 400 femmes et enfants, y compris 13 800 filles et 13 300 garçons. De plus, on s'attend à ce que plus de 160 000 personnes bénéficient indirectement des résultats du projet. The program's overall objectiv...e is to support community-driven sustainable development and to improve the living conditions for rural poor of the State of Andhra Pradesh in India. Implemented in partnership with Bala Vikasa, the program includes two main strategies: 1) improving the living conditions of women, children/youth and farmers with the provision of safe water (bore wells, purification systems) and sanitation (household toilets), improved access to basic education and skills training, the development of organic farming technology and methods, and de-silting of water reservoirs and fertilization; and 2) investing in people's knowledge and capacity building with the development and delivery of thematic training on rural community development for practionners from NGOs, local governments, universities, and the publication/dissemination of best practices and lessons learned.Local Partner: Bala Vikasa./ Le programme a pour objectif d'appuyer le développement durable axé sur la communauté et d'améliorer les conditions de vie des habitants de l'État de Andhra Pradesh en Inde. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. This initiative aims to improv...e the health and nutrition status of poor and vulnerable mothers, newborns and children in select regions by working with local health authorities. It directly addresses malnutrition in the first 1000 days of children's lives in targeted districts and inform national nutrition policies in the targeted countries. Malnutrition is the cause of over 3 million child deaths annually and results in illnesses such as stunting, wasting and anemia, as well as poor motor, cognitive and social development.The project aims to be implemented in Bangladesh (Thakurgaon District), Myanmar (Thabaung Township), Kenya (Elgeyo Marakwet county), Pakistan (Sukkur District), and Tanzania (Singida and Shinyanga Regions). The effects of malnutrition in these countries are significant as collectively they represent 13% of the global burden of stunting, 15% of the global burden of severe anaemia and 12% of the global burden of wasting. Such illnesses are especially pronounced in rural regions, such as those targeted by the project.The project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 2 million individuals, including more than 835,000 women, 740,000 children and 490,000 men, and indirectly reach an estimated 2.5 million individuals who are not targeted by the project but who benefit from the strengthened health system and improved health services. Policy changes in nutrition and wider application of existing policies as a result of the project advocacy efforts also have positive impact on indirect beneficiaries. In addition, the initiative's activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 3 million Canadians.Project activities include: (1) recruiting, training and equipping community healthcare workers to promote and provide essential health services; (2) training local health councils in improved data analysis and reporting to inform planning and delivery of maternal, newbord and child health (MNCH) services; (3) raising awareness of key nutritional practices, including dietary diversity; (4) providing inputs and training in the development of home gardens; (5) informing and increasing community participation in policy dialogue with governments on MNCH issues; and, (6) implementing interactive media and linking Canadians with empowered youth in a mentorship program to improve the knowledge and ability of Canadians to engage in international MNCH and nutrition issues.It is implemented by World Vision Canada in collaboration with the Micronutrient Initiative, HarvestPlus, the Canadian Society for International Health, the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the Hospital for Sick Children. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. The local partners deliver more effective employment, entrepreneurial and life skills, support community-based organizations to transition to functional cooperatives, support the participation of women and youth in agricultural value chains, and help increase access to agricultural extension services in rural communities./ Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international.Pour assurer l'avenir des jeunes et des collectivités, l'initiative internationale de Cuso International offre 40 stages de deux ans à l'intention des Canadiens et Canadiennes. The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives.In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services.In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. Ce projet vise à atteindre un...e santé nutritionnelle durable et équitable chez les femmes, les jeunes et les hommes de 12 communes rurales du Mali des zones de Boidié, Dioïla et Markacoungo, grâce à : 1) Une production accrue d'une diversité d'aliments nutritifs incluant le moringa à titre d'aliment riche en vitamine A et protéines par les femmes membres des 12 coopératives maraîchères féminines, en renforçant les compétences de ces femmes sur la production d'aliments nutritifs et en aménageant 12 parcelles maraîchères, soit une pour chacune des coopératives; 2) Une augmentation du taux de consommation d'aliments nutritifs par les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de 5 ans, en effectuant de la sensibilisation et de la formation sur différents enjeux nutritionnels et en favorisant l'accès à une stratégie de communication harmonisée entre les agentes de santé nutritionnelle issues des communautés locales et les Associations de santé communautaires (ASACO); et 3) Une participation accrue des femmes dans les instances décisionnelles des ASACO de ces communes en vue d'une plus grande prise en charge des enjeux de santé nutritionnelle en réalisant de la sensibilisation sur la nécessité de la participation des femmes et en renforçant leurs compétences sur le fonctionnement des ASACO. L'initiative est issue d'une analyse des besoins locaux effectuée lors d'un processus de planification stratégique mené par Kilabo qui a intégré un volet pour la promotion de l'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania./ Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. La plupart des maladies et des décès dans les villages ciblés par le projet étaient causées par des maladies évitables, le manque d'accès à des travailleurs de la santé communautaire et le manque d'accès à de l'eau potable et à une alimentation adéquate.Le projet est mis en œuvre avec des partenaires locaux dans chaque pays : le diocèse anglican de Bujumbura au Burundi, EHALE au Mozambique, et le diocèse anglican de Masasi en Tanzanie.Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. This initiative aims to improv...e the nutritional status of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children under 5 years, while working with local health authorities. Activities include: (1) training health workers to provide education on and identify, monitor and treat malnutrition in mothers, pregnant and breastfeeding women and infants and children under 5 years, (2) delivering campaigns to encourage optimal breastfeeding, establishing household and school gardens to grow a diversity of nutritious foods, and holding cooking demonstrations to encourage use of new and unfamiliar foods, (3) constructing, rehabilitating and maintaining community water sources, and, (4) raising awareness on good water, sanitation and hygiene practices, as well as promoting open dialogue on gender norms and distribution of food, resources and assets within households and across household members. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 190,000 women, children and men directly, and over 1 million individuals indirectly. The initiative is being implemented in Malawi (Dowa and Ntchisi districts), Mozambique (Funahlouro and Homoine districts) and Zambia (Mpika and Shiwa Ng'andu districts). It is implemented through a consortium led by Care Canada, and including McGill University, CUSO International, and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development. Project implementation is also supported by the following local partners: in Malawi: Development Aid from People to People, in Mozambique: Associação Para Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Mulher, Associação Juvenil para a Educação e Promoção de Juventude, and REDE Pastoral de Homoine, and in Zambia: the National Food and Nutrition Commission and the CSO SUN Alliance. / Le projet vise à améliorer l'état nutritionnel des femmes en âge de procréer (15 à 49 ans) et des enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad.Cuso International's Securing Sustainable Futures for Youth and Communities Initiative provides internships for 40 Canadian interns over a two-year period. The interns work in Peru, Guyana, Cameroon, Nicaragua and Laos on stimulating sustainable economic growth, increasing food security and securing the future of children and youth. This project aims to reduce th...e number of children under the age of five who are dying from diarrhea in five Nigerian states. This project works closely with communities, the Government of Nigeria, and the private sector to build a sustainable, local market for oral rehydration salts and zinc - the recommended treatment for diarrhea. Combined, these two simple, highly effective, and affordable treatments can reduce the likelihood of diarrhea deaths in young children by up to 93%. The project works to encourage investment by Nigerian pharmaceutical importers and manufacturers to ensure a better supply of these low-cost treatments in Nigeria, and better distribution of the treatments in clinics and private shops in hard-to-reach areas. This innovative, private-sector oriented project, also seeks to educate caregivers and health workers in the use of oral rehydration salts and zinc to effectively and safely treat diarrhea in children. The project aims to increase the use of these life-saving treatments - from less than 1% currently to over 50% by 2017 - to reach an estimated 4.2 million children./ Ce projet a pour but de réduire le nombre d'enfants de moins de cinq ans qui meurent de la diarrhée dans cinq États du Nigéria. This initiative aims to improv...e the lives and incomes of 10,000 poor and vulnerable farming households (approximately 80,000 people) through agriculture-driven economic growth. The project is providing training and related technical support in modern farming methods to farmers in order to increase yields for selected commodity and livestock value chains. The project also aims to improve the business environment to make it more favourable for farmers, women and youth. Project activities seek to increase market access, generate employment and improve nutrition for vulnerable women and children./ L'initiative vise à améliorer la vie de 10,000 ménages pauvres (environ 80 000 personnes) pratiquant l'agriculture à petite échelle grâce à une croissance économique axée sur l'agriculture. La mise en place de programmes de formation et d'appui technique permet d'accroitre les rendements agricoles pour les chaînes de valeur des marchandises et du bétail appuyées par le projet, d'augmenter l'accès aux marchés, de créer des emplois et d'améliorer la nutrition des enfants et des femmes vulnérables. Le projet permet également d'améliorer l'environnement des affaires pour le rendre plus favorable pour les petits agriculteurs, les femmes et les jeunes.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

The IYIP is designed to offer Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience in international development.The Carrefour de solidarité internationale sends 112 interns to four countries as part of the Professional Internships project. A significant proportion of internships aim to promote democracy and gender equality. The other internships seek to support eco-friendly economic development and food security./Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages internationaux pour les jeunes (PSIJ) d'Affaires mondiales Canada, financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens détenant un diplôme d'études postsecondaires la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en développement international.Dans le cadre du projet Stages professionnels, le Carrefour de solidarité internationale envoie 112 stagiaires dans quatre pays. The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results.This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI)./Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques au Cambodge, en Birmanie, aux Philippines et au Rwanda. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés des deux sexes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. On s'attend à ce que le projet contribue directement à l'amélioration de la santé d'environ 100 000 personnes, dont environ 33 000 enfants appartenant à des groupes vulnérables, notamment des minorités ethniques et des personnes déplacées qui reviennent chez elles. The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives.In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services.In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. This project aims at improving... the nutritional security of populations living in the Kolda and Kédougou regions by focussing on preventing new cases of malnutrition, especially amongst women and young children. These regions show malnutrition rates significantly higher than the national average, resulting in child mortality rates twice as high as the national average. The project seeks to reduce malnutrition by adopting an integrated approach consisting of the following three components: 1) promote better nutrition practices for vulnerable populations; 2) support communities in the production of more nutritious food; 3) strengthen the capacity of the government at the local, regional and national levels to deliver nutrition or nutrition-sensitive programmes.Project activities include: 1) train and provide equipment to 1,775 health workers to deliver behaviour change communication messages on appropriate nutritional practices to approximately 35,000 influential in household food consumption decision-making (mainly women); 2) support the development and delivery of community services related to maternal and child nutrition to 31,000 pregnant and lactating women and approximately 50,500 children under five; 3) implement community initiatives to improve the production and distribution of nutrient-rich food by 30,000 households, including training on good agricultural practices and support to the development of local entrepreneurship; 4) train and provide equipment to local and regional government structures leading to a better inclusion of nutrition issues in the design, implementation, coordination and monitoring of development plans./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la sécurité nutritionnelle des populations vivant dans les régions de Kolda et de Kédougou en mettant l'accent sur la prévention des nouveaux cas de malnutrition, surtout chez les femmes et les jeunes enfants. Les régions de Kolda et Kédougou présentent des taux de malnutrition nettement plus élevés que la moyenne nationale, contribuant à des taux de mortalité infantile deux fois plus élevés que de la moyenne nationale. Le projet cherche à réduire ces taux en utilisant une approche intégrée, composée de trois volets : 1) la promotion de meilleures pratiques nutritionnelles auprès des populations vulnérables; 2) un appui aux collectivités dans la production d'aliments plus nutritifs; 3) le renforcement des capacités des instances gouvernementales aux niveaux local, régional et national à livrer des programmes de nutrition ou qui intègrent la nutrition.Parmi les activités du projet, notons : 1) former et équiper 1 775 agents de santé pour diffuser des messages de changement de comportement sur les bonnes pratiques nutritionnelles à environ 35 000 personnes-clés dans la prise de décision liée à l'alimentation (surtout les femmes); 2) appuyer le développement et la mise en œuvre de services de proximité en matière de nutrition maternelle et infantile à environ 31 000 femmes enceintes et allaita

This project is part of DFATD'...s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education.The Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean initiative offers 16 internships for Aboriginals in three countries (Burkina Faso, Senegal and Equator) in the fields targeted by the eight local partners, namely ancestral knowledge, maternal health and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, valorisation and transformation of non-timber forest products, adaptation to climate change, environmental education, HIV/AIDS prevention, family planning and reproductive health. The project contributes to increasing male and female Aboriginal youth's employability, providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment or pursue their studies./ Ce projet fait partie de l'initiative des Stages internationaux pour les jeunes Autochtones (SIJA) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD). Ces stages visent à accroître la sensibilisation, l'engagement et la participation des jeunes Autochtones à l'égard du développement international, tout en leur donnant la chance d'élargir leurs compétences professionnelles.L'initiative du Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean permet l'envoi de 16 stagiaires Autochtones dans trois pays (Burkina Faso, Sénégal et Équateur) dans les domaines ciblés par huit partenaires locaux. Les secteurs d'interventions sont la valorisation des savoirs ancestraux, la santé maternelle et la nutrition, l'agriculture durable, la valorisation et la transformation des produits forestiers non-ligneux, l'adaptation aux changements climatiques, l'éducation relative à l'environnement, la prévention du VIH-Sida, la planification familiale et la santé reproductive. This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children.Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation.Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en œuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal and infant mortality rates in Yambio County by improving the quality of maternal and infant health services at the Yambio State Hospital. Project activities include: (1) training of medical staff in basic emergency obstetrics, paediatrics, pre- and post-natal care services, sexual and gender based violence, laboratory management, and water and sanitation; (2) providing the hospital with supplies and medicines and training on infection control; and (3) improving Health Management Information Systems capacities. The project is expected to reach about 39,000 people directly, including over 8,000 pregnant women and 30,860 children under the age of five. Amref Health Africa in Canada is working in partnership with Amref Kenya and Amref South Sudan to implement this project with the State Ministry of Health of Western Equatoria State./ Ce projet vise à réduire les taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile dans le comté de Yambio en améliorant la qualité des services de santé maternelle et infantile de l'hôpital public de Yambio. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) offrir au personnel médical une formation sur les soins d'urgence obstétriques, pédiatriques, anténatals et postnatals de base, la violence sexuelle et sexiste, la gestion de laboratoire, l'approvisionnement en eau et l'assainissement; 2) fournir au personnel de l'hôpital du matériel et des médicaments, et lui offrir une formation sur le contrôle des infections; 3) renforcer les capacités des systèmes d'information de gestion de la santé. Le projet devrait permettre d'aider directement environ 39 000 personnes, dont plus de 8 000 femmes enceintes et 30 860 enfants de moins de cinq ans. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi in Tanzania./ Ce projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des populations de 194 villages ruraux au Mozambique, en Tanzanie et au Burundi en augmentant l'accès aux soins de santé primaire et à l'eau potable, en faisant la promotion de saines habitudes de vie et en améliorant le rendement agricole des petits exploitants. La plupart des maladies et des décès dans les villages ciblés par le projet étaient causées par des maladies évitables, le manque d'accès à des travailleurs de la santé communautaire et le manque d'accès à de l'eau potable et à une alimentation adéquate.Le projet est mis en œuvre avec des partenaires locaux dans chaque pays : le diocèse anglican de Bujumbura au Burundi, EHALE au Mozambique, et le diocèse anglican de Masasi en Tanzanie.Le projet contribue à augmenter le nombre de travailleurs communautaires dans le secteur de la santé, à fournir des vélos-ambulances aux villages éloignés, à construire ou à agrandir des infrastructures de santé de base dans les collectivités qui en ont le plus besoin et à améliorer l'accès à l'eau potable en creusant ou en rénovant des puits. Le projet enseigne également aux femmes, aux hommes et aux enfants les principes de santé sexuelle et génésique, de nutrition et d'hygiène, de santé maternelle et infantile, de prévention du VIH/sida et d'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes. Une formation sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'agriculture durable est également donnée aux agriculteurs et agricultrices.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children.Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation.Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. Le projet appuie les chercheurs et scientifiques admissibles du Canada et de pays en développement pour la mise en œuvre d'innovations éprouvées dans des pays en développement où des personnes souffrent démesurément d'une mauvaise santé. This project aims to work, ove...r a four year period, in collaboration with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and to their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project will address this inequality by improving the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H'Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam).Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives.The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 women) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component.This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam.
