This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting. This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. /Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. They work with five other Canadian universities, together with researchers and municipal governments in seven cities in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.How this research will make a differenceThe research team will analyze formal and informal urban food systems in the partner cities, how they interact, how they are governed, and their respective contribution to food security and inclusive growth.This project will:-provide evidence of entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities in the urban informal food system;-identify potential opportunities for women and youth to be incorporated as entrepreneurs and employees with decent jobs;-deliver knowledge through workshops, training, and consultations to inform policy and practice at the municipal level on enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the informal food economy;-support 24 students (one post-doctoral, three PhD and 20 master's students) to develop research and collaborate with their Canadian peers; and-offer six policy workshops on urban food security and inclusive growth.The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding this project. This project aims to improve m...aternal, infant and child nutrition, reduce stunting of children under the age of five, and improve the nutritional status of pregnant women. Canada's support would directly benefit 85,500 people including boys, girls, men, women, local authorities and community leaders. Despite recent progress, malnutrition remains a serious problem in Ethiopia, and many children and women do not regularly have enough nutritious food to keep them healthy. Activities include: (1) providing training on infant and young children's feeding practices, distributing material on proper nutrition as well as good water and sanitation practices; (2) supporting the development of school and household fruit and vegetable gardens; (3) increasing access to water through the mapping of existing water points and support for repair and maintenance; and (4) training on the importance of gender equality in order to achieve nutrition improvements. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la nutrition des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants, à réduire les retards dans la croissance des enfants de moins de cinq ans et à renforcer le bilan nutritionnel des femmes enceintes. Le soutien offert par le Canada profiterait directement à 85 500 personnes, y compris des garçons, des filles, des hommes, des femmes, des autorités locales et des dirigeants communautaires. Malgré les progrès réalisés récemment, la malnutrition demeure un problème grave en Éthiopie et bon nombre d'enfants et de femmes n'ont pas assez d'aliments nutritifs régulièrement pour rester en santé. This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting. This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. /Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. Despite recent progress, malnutrition remains a serious problem in Ethiopia, and many children do not regularly have enough nutritious food to keep them healthy. Malnutrition contributes to about half of all deaths of children under five years old. Activities include: (1) core nutrition interventions (such as nutrition education, malnutrition detection, access to supplementary feeding); and (2) access to nutritious food, including nutrition-sensitive agricultural products (such as vegetables, fruits, milk) and water, hygiene and sanitation. /Ce projet vise à améliorer le bilan nutritionnel des enfants de moins de cinq ans (350 000 enfants) et des femmes enceintes et qui allaitent (400 000 femmes) en Éthiopie en élargissant l'accès à des services de nutrition de qualité, à des aliments nutritifs ainsi qu'à des services d'approvisionnement en eau et d'assainissement (250 000 personnes et 25 000 ménages). Malgré les progrès réalisés récemment, la malnutrition demeure un problème grave en Éthiopie et bon nombre d'enfants ne consomment pas assez d'aliments nutritifs régulièrement pour rester en santé. March 2018 – Ethiopia hosts ...the second largest number of refugees in Africa, nearly one million people. Approximatelyy 40% of these are from South Sudan and now live in the remote Gambella region of western Ethiopia. Although safe from the conflict and insecurity that forced them to flee, many refugees are still suffering from their effects, including acute malnutrition and trauma related to violence. With limited local options for self-sustainability and little chance of returning home in the near future, most refugee households remain reliant on ongoing international assistance to meet their basic needs. With GAC's support, Concern Worldwide is providing nutritional assistance to an estimated 19,500 South Sudanese refugees and host communities in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. Environ 40 % des réfugiés proviennent du Soudan du Sud et vivent aujourd'hui dans la région éloignée de Gambella, dans l'Ouest de l'Éthiopie. Même s'ils sont maintenant à l'abri du conflit et de l'insécurité qui les ont forcés à fuir leur pays, bon nombre de réfugiés en ressentent encore des effets (malnutrition aiguë, traumatismes liés à la violence, etc.). Compte tenu du nombre limité d'options à l'échelle locale en matière d'autosuffisance et de leurs faibles chances de revenir à la maison dans un avenir rapproché, la plupart des ménages de réfugiés continuent de dépendre de l'aide internationale pour satisfaire leurs besoins de base. Grâce au soutien d'AMC, Concern Worldwide fournit une aide nutritionnelle à environ 19 500 réfugiés du Soudan du Sud et membres des collectivités d'accueil dans la région de Gambella, en Éthiopie. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by quickly getting food to the hungry, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. June 2019 - Two years after th...e 2016-2017 drought brought Somalia and parts of Ethiopia to the brink of famine, severe climatic conditions are again pushing the Horn of Africa towards a major humanitarian emergency. Currently, an estimated 11.4 million people are facing acute food insecurity due to drought or displacement in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. Without immediate humanitarian action, it is estimated that as many as 17 million people across the region could be acutely food insecure as soon as August. With support from GAC and other international donors, UNICEF is addressing the varied humanitarian needs of more than 5.4 million vulnerable drought-affected people, including more than 3.2 million children, in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. Project activities include: (1) providing life-saving nutrition and other medical services; (2) provision of safe water and adequate gender-sensitive sanitation facilities; and (3) child protection interventions, such as psycho-social support and safe spaces for those facing increased risk due to drought-related displacement or other hardships. /Juin 2019 - Deux ans après que la sécheresse de 2016-2017 ait amené la Somalie et certaines régions de l'Ethiopie au bord de la famine, les conditions climatiques sévères poussent à nouveau la Corne de l'Afrique vers une urgence humanitaire majeure. Actuellement, on estime que 11,4 millions de personnes sont confrontées à une insécurité alimentaire aiguë en raison de la sécheresse ou des déplacements en Ethiopie, au Kenya, en Somalie et en Ouganda. Sans une action humanitaire immédiate, on estime que 17 millions de personnes dans la région pourraient être en situation d'insécurité alimentaire aiguë dès le mois d'août. This project aims to increase ...access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food, and improve the health, economic well-being and social development of the underserved rural population of the Upper Manya Krobo district of Ghana. Beneficiaries are part of the three interventions (i) agriculture-nutrition education intervention (ANI) for households with infants that supported egg production (288 women-children dyads & families); (ii) savings-education intervention for adolescent girls that promoted financial literacy and healthy life choices (776 adolescents & families); (iii) behaviour change communication (BCC) radio intervention that promoted dietary diversity for young children (692 women with children < 5 y & families). Project activities also contribute to increasing the capacity of local institutions to formulate evidence-based policy, develop programs, and produce adult education materials. This project is implemented by McGill University in partnership with the University of Ghana. /Ce projet vise à améliorer la prestation de services dans le district du Haut-Manya Krobo, au Ghana, afin d'améliorer le bien-être économique, la santé et le développement social de la population rurale et de faciliter son accès à des aliments sains et nutritifs en quantité suffisante. Les bénéficiaires font partie d'au moins l'une des trois interventions i) intervention d'éducation en agriculture-nutrition pour les ménages avec enfants pour appuyer la production d'œufs (288 duo femme-enfant et familles); ii) intervention d'éducation en épargne pour les adolescentes pour augmenter leur littératie financière et promouvoir des choix de vie sains (776 des adolescentes et familles); iii) la programmation radio pour favoriser les changements de comportement vers une meilleure diversité alimentaire pour les jeunes enfants (692 femmes ayant des enfants de < 5 ans et familles). Les activités du projet contribuent également à renforcer les capacités des institutions locales à formuler des politiques fondées sur des données probantes, à élaborer des programmes et à produire du matériel pédagogique destiné aux adultes. Ce projet est mis en oeuvre par l'Université McGill en partenariat avec l'Université du Ghana.

The project provides direct fu...nding to the Government of Ghana to improve food security and make the agriculture sector more modern, equitable and sustainable. The project seeks to implement a comprehensive market-oriented approach to farming and to strengthen and modernize agricultural extension services. The project covers the entire country at the national, regional and district levels and is expected to benefit 2.8 million farm households, including many female farmers. Project activities include: (1) delivering agricultural extension services and market-oriented training to farm households, with a particular focus on providing information linked to improved cultural practices and the appropriate use of fertilizers, pesticides, tools and machinery; (2) equipping District Agricultural Departments and Regional Agricultural Departments with extension materials, equipment and logistical support; (3) supporting innovative, demand-driven and market-oriented research to address current challenges being faced by smallholder farmers; (4) updating and reorienting a standardized curriculum for agricultural colleges and farm institutes to be more market-focused, gender-sensitive and climate-smart; and (5) improving the enabling (administrative and legal) environment to facilitate access to local and foreign markets for agricultural production. /Le projet fournit un soutien financier direct au gouvernement du Ghana afin d'améliorer la sécurité alimentaire et de rendre le secteur agricole plus moderne, équitable et durable. Le projet vise à mettre en œuvre une approche globale axée sur le marché pour l'exploitation agricole et à renforcer et moderniser les services de vulgarisation agricole. Le projet couvre l'ensemble des districts, des régions et du pays et devrait bénéficier à 2,8 millions de ménages agricoles, incluant plusieurs agricultrices. Parmi les activités du projet figurent les suivantes : 1) assurer la prestation de services de vulgarisation agricole et offrir une formation axée sur les marchés aux ménages agricoles, ciblant principalement les pratiques agricoles améliorées ainsi que l'utilisation appropriée des engrais, des pesticides, des outils et de la machinerie ; 2) fournir du matériel de vulgarisation, de l'équipement et un soutien financier et logistique aux bureaux d'agriculture des districts et des régions ; 3) appuyer une recherche novatrice axée sur le marché qui répond aux demandes actuelles des exploitants agricoles ; 4) actualiser un programme d'études des collèges et instituts agricoles afin qu'il soit axé sur le marché, qu'il tienne compte des besoins des femmes et qu'il intègre la viabilité de l'environnement ; 5) améliorer le climat administratif et réglementaire afin d'augmenter l'accès des produits agricoles aux marchés locaux et étrangers.

As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting. This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. /Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by quickly getting food to the hungry, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. As the global lead agency for logistics and emergency telecommunications, WFP also plays a major role in providing common services for the humanitarian community. It transports passengers undertaking humanitarian work, carries light cargo for humanitarian agencies, and carries out emergency medical and security evacuations. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of GAC and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 90 million people facing famine, malnutrition and severe food insecurity. /Mars 2019 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il intervient en cas d'urgence, sauve des vies en apportant rapidement de la nourriture à ceux qui ont faim et s'efforce de prévenir la faim à l'avenir. Dans les situations d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'attached à fournir une aide alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et pour protéger les moyens de subsistance. En tant qu'organisme chef de file mondial pour la logistique et les télécommunications d'urgence, le PAM joue également un rôle majeur dans la fourniture de services communs à la communauté humanitaire. June 2019 - Two years after th...e 2016-2017 drought brought Somalia and parts of Ethiopia to the brink of famine, severe climatic conditions are again pushing the Horn of Africa towards a major humanitarian emergency. Currently, an estimated 11.4 million people are facing acute food insecurity due to drought or displacement in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. Without immediate humanitarian action, it is estimated that as many as 17 million people across the region could be acutely food insecure as soon as August. With support from GAC and other international donors, UNICEF is addressing the varied humanitarian needs of more than 5.4 million vulnerable drought-affected people, including more than 3.2 million children, in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. Project activities include: (1) providing life-saving nutrition and other medical services; (2) provision of safe water and adequate gender-sensitive sanitation facilities; and (3) child protection interventions, such as psycho-social support and safe spaces for those facing increased risk due to drought-related displacement or other hardships. /Juin 2019 - Deux ans après que la sécheresse de 2016-2017 ait amené la Somalie et certaines régions de l'Ethiopie au bord de la famine, les conditions climatiques sévères poussent à nouveau la Corne de l'Afrique vers une urgence humanitaire majeure. Actuellement, on estime que 11,4 millions de personnes sont confrontées à une insécurité alimentaire aiguë en raison de la sécheresse ou des déplacements en Ethiopie, au Kenya, en Somalie et en Ouganda. This initiative aims to improv...e the nutritional status of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children under 5 years, while working with local health authorities. Activities include: (1) training health workers to provide education on and identify, monitor and treat malnutrition in mothers, pregnant and breastfeeding women and infants and children under 5 years; (2) delivering campaigns to encourage optimal breastfeeding, establishing household and school gardens to grow a diversity of nutritious foods, and holding cooking demonstrations to encourage use of new and unfamiliar foods; (3) constructing, rehabilitating and maintaining community water sources; and, (4) raising awareness on good water, sanitation and hygiene practices, as well as promoting open dialogue on gender norms and distribution of food, resources and assets within households and across household members. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 190,000 women, children and men directly, and over 1 million individuals indirectly. The initiative is being implemented in Malawi (Dowa and Ntchisi districts), Mozambique (Funahlouro and Homoine districts) and Zambia (Mpika and Shiwa Ng'andu districts). It is implemented through a consortium led by Care Canada, and including McGill University, CUSO International, and the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development. Project implementation is also supported by the following local partners: in Malawi: Development Aid from People to People; in Mozambique: Associação Para Promoção e Desenvolvimento da Mulher, Associação Juvenil para a Educação e Promoção de Juventude, and REDE Pastoral de Homoine; and in Zambia: the National Food and Nutrition Commission and the CSO SUN Alliance. /Le projet vise à améliorer l'état nutritionnel des femmes en âge de procréer (15 à 49 ans) et des enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. This project aims to strengthe...n the resilience of vulnerable communities, mainly women and girls, in the Mopti and Ségou regions of Mali. The project also aims to improve the food, nutrition, and health situation, increase agricultural productivity and incomes of target populations, while tackling the effects of climate change on food security in their communities. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating health and drinking water infrastructure in health centers, schools, and households in targeted communities; (2) strengthening the prevention and management of malnutrition in children, and pregnant and lactating women; (3) distributing nutritious meals to students; (4) organizing village savings and credit associations, school gardens, and income-generating activities for small producers, particularly women; (5) creating and rehabilitating productive community assets (irrigated perimeter, reforestation of drylands, water collection systems, etc.); (6) working to ensure joint management of the natural resources shared between farmers and herders; and (7) building the capacity of women to make informed decisions in households and communities by providing leadership training and raising awareness of gender equality in communities. The project is jointly implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). /Ce projet vise à renforcer la résilience des communautés vulnérables, principalement des femmes et des filles, des zones ciblées des régions de Mopti et de Ségou, au Mali. As urban populations grow in d...eveloping countries, promoting inclusive growth that ensures food security for all is critical. This project will offer new insights into the informal food sector, and identify entrepreneurship and job opportunities for women and youth.Growth in urban populations The urban population in developing countries is expected to exceed 50% for the first time by 2020. Over the next 30 years, these cities will absorb 95% of urban growth. By 2030, they will be home to almost 4 billion people, or 80% of the world's urban population. As people move to the cities, there is a growing crisis of food insecurity. Food prices are high and incomes are low. Even in countries experiencing rapid economic growth, food insecurity is a major challenge. Within this context, the urban food economy is an important laboratory for examining whether and how inclusive growth strategies can have a positive impact by encouraging entrepreneurship, raising incomes, alleviating poverty, and mitigating the crisis of food insecurity.The Hungry Cities InitiativeThe goal of the Hungry Cities Initiative is to promote inclusive growth in the informal food sector through research on policy approaches that enable it, combined with measures that support entrepreneurship and decent employment. The Hungry Cities Initiative seeks to provide a global perspective on the links between three major transformation processes: rapid urbanization, the crisis of food insecurity, and the informal economy's emergence as the major source of livelihood for urban poor, including women and youth.The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University (Canada) run the Hungry Cities Initiative. They work with five other Canadian universities, together with researchers and municipal governments in seven cities in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.How this research will make a differenceThe research team will analyze formal and informal urban food systems in the partner cities, how they interact, how they are governed, and their respective contribution to food security and inclusive growth.This project will:-provide evidence of entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities in the urban informal food system;-identify potential opportunities for women and youth to be incorporated as entrepreneurs and employees with decent jobs;-deliver knowledge through workshops, training, and consultations to inform policy and practice at the municipal level on enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the informal food economy;-support 24 students (one post-doctoral, three PhD and 20 master's students) to develop research and collaborate with their Canadian peers; and-offer six policy workshops on urban food security and inclusive growth.The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding this project. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé pour qu'ils puissent donner des informations sur la malnutrition chez les mères, les femmes enceintes et allaitantes et les nouveau nés et enfants de moins de cinq ans, détecter ce problème, le surveiller et le traiter; 2) campagnes de promotion d'un allaitement optimal, création de potagers dans les foyers et les écoles pour faire pousser divers aliments nutritifs, et leçons de cuisine pour encourager l'utilisation d'aliments nouveaux; 3) construction, remise en état et entretien des réseaux communautaires d'approvisionnement en eau; 4) sensibilisation aux bonnes pratiques d'approvisionnement en eau, d'assainissement et d'hygiène, et promotion d'un dialogue ouvert sur le sexisme et la distribution des aliments, des ressources et des biens au foyer, entre les membres de la famille. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by quickly getting food to the hungry, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. This project aims to reduce th...e number of children under the age of five who are dying from diarrhea in five Nigerian states. This project works closely with communities, the Government of Nigeria, and the private sector to build a sustainable, local market for oral rehydration salts and zinc - the recommended treatment for diarrhea. Combined, these two simple, highly effective, and affordable treatments can reduce the likelihood of diarrhea deaths in young children by up to 93%. The project works to encourage investment by Nigerian pharmaceutical importers and manufacturers to ensure a better supply of these low-cost treatments in Nigeria, and better distribution of the treatments in clinics and private shops in hard-to-reach areas. This innovative, private-sector oriented project, also seeks to educate caregivers and health workers in the use of oral rehydration salts and zinc to effectively and safely treat diarrhea in children. The project aims to increase the use of these life-saving treatments - from less than 1% currently to over 50% by 2017 - to reach an estimated 4.2 million children. /Ce projet a pour but de réduire le nombre d'enfants de moins de cinq ans qui meurent de la diarrhée dans cinq États du Nigéria. Ce projet est en étroite collaboration avec les communautés, le gouvernement du Nigéria et le secteur privé afin de mettre en place un marché local durable pour les sels de réhydratation orale et le zinc – le traitement recommandé contre la diarrhée. Ensemble, ces deux traitements simples, hautement efficaces et abordables peuvent réduire jusqu'à 93% le risque de décès chez les jeunes enfants dus à la diarrhée. Le projet cherche à stimuler les investissements des importateurs et des fabricants nigériens de produits pharmaceutiques pour assurer un meilleur approvisionnement de ces traitements à bas prix au Nigéria, et une meilleure répartition des traitements dans les cliniques et les commerces privés dans les zones difficiles à atteindre. Ce projet novateur, orienté vers le secteur privé, vise également à sensibiliser les soignants et les travailleurs de la santé dans l'utilisation des sels de réhydratation orale et de zinc pour traiter efficacement et en toute sécurité la diarrhée chez les enfants. Le projet vise à accroître l'utilisation de ces traitements permettant de sauver des vies – de moins de 1% actuellement à plus de 50% d'ici 2017 – pour atteindre près de 4,2 millions d'enfants.

This initiative aims to improv...e the lives and incomes of 10,000 poor and vulnerable farming households (approximately 80,000 people) through agriculture-driven economic growth. The project is providing training and related technical support in modern farming methods to farmers in order to increase yields for selected commodity and livestock value chains. The project also aims to improve the business environment to make it more favourable for farmers, women and youth. Project activities seek to increase market access, generate employment and improve nutrition for vulnerable women and children. /L'initiative vise à améliorer la vie de 10,000 ménages pauvres (environ 80 000 personnes) pratiquant l'agriculture à petite échelle grâce à une croissance économique axée sur l'agriculture. La mise en place de programmes de formation et d'appui technique permet d'accroitre les rendements agricoles pour les chaînes de valeur des marchandises et du bétail appuyées par le projet, d'augmenter l'accès aux marchés, de créer des emplois et d'améliorer la nutrition des enfants et des femmes vulnérables. This project with the Micronut...rient Initiative (MI) aims to improve the nutrition and health of people who need it the most in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, particularly adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, newborns and young children. The MI works with country governments and other organizations in nutrition to leverage existing proven platforms to extend the reach, depth and impact of nutrition programming among target populations. Project activities include: (1) delivering essential nutrition services, namely critical vitamins and minerals; fortified food products, promotion of breastfeeding; and (2) delivering nutrition counselling and antenatal care packages to reduce mortality, anaemia, birth defects, low birth weight and stunting. This project is part of Canada's commitment to Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. /Ce projet de l'Initiative pour les micronutriments (IM) vise à améliorer la nutrition et la santé des personnes qui en ont le plus besoin en Afrique subsaharienne et en Asie du Sud, particulièrement les adolescentes, les femmes enceintes, les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les jeunes enfants. L'IM collabore avec les gouvernements des pays et d'autres organisations dans le secteur de la nutrition pour tirer parti des plateformes actuelles éprouvées et accroître la portée, l'intensité et les répercussions des programmes de nutrition chez les populations ciblées. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) fournir des services de nutrition fondamentaux, notamment des vitamines et des minéraux essentiels et des produits alimentaires enrichis et promouvoir l'allaitement maternel; 2) donner des conseils sur la nutrition et des trousses de soins prénatals pour réduire la mortalité, l'anémie, les anomalies congénitales, le faible poids à la naissance et les retards de croissance. Ce projet s'inscrit dans le cadre de l'engagement pris par le Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants.

March 2019 - The World Food Pr...ogramme (WFP) is the United Nations' frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by quickly getting food to the hungry, and works to help prevent hunger in the future. In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. As the global lead agency for logistics and emergency telecommunications, WFP also plays a major role in providing common services for the humanitarian community. It transports passengers undertaking humanitarian work, carries light cargo for humanitarian agencies, and carries out emergency medical and security evacuations. Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of GAC and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 90 million people facing famine, malnutrition and severe food insecurity. /Mars 2019 - Le Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM) est l'organisme de première ligne des Nations Unies dans la lutte contre la faim. Il intervient en cas d'urgence, sauve des vies en apportant rapidement de la nourriture à ceux qui ont faim et s'efforce de prévenir la faim à l'avenir. Dans les situations d'urgence humanitaire, le PAM s'attached à fournir une aide alimentaire ciblée pour réduire la malnutrition aiguë et l'insécurité alimentaire et pour protéger les moyens de subsistance. En tant qu'organisme chef de file mondial pour la logistique et les télécommunications d'urgence, le PAM joue également un rôle majeur dans la fourniture de services communs à la communauté humanitaire. Il transporte des passagers qui entreprennent des activités humanitaires, transporte des marchandises légères pour le compte d'organismes humanitaires et procède à des évacuations médicales d'urgence et à des évacuations pour des raisons de sécurité. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) la distribution de nourriture; 2) fournir une alimentation complémentaire aux enfants de moins de cinq ans et aux femmes enceintes et à celles qui allaitent; 3) soutenir les programmes d'alimentation scolaire d'urgence; 4) distribuer des bons d'alimentation et faire des transferts de fonds visant l'achat de vivres; 5) offrir des programmes « vivres contre travail ». Avec l'appui d'AMC et d'autres donateurs, le PAM fournit une aide alimentaire d'urgence à plus de 90 millions de personnes aux prises avec la famine, la malnutrition et une grave insécurité alimentaire.
