Canada is providing additional... funding for one year (2016) to the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research's (CGIAR) Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH) research program to fund additional activities as part of the extension of the research program until 2016. This funding complements Canada's $20 million in funding for 2013-2015. A4NH seeks to strengthen the contribution of agricultural development to the health and nutrition of the poor and undernourished. Led by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the program conducts research and develops technologies and approaches in four complementary areas: Value chains for enhanced nutrition and health, biofortification of staple crops, and integrated programs and harmonized policies on agriculture, nutrition, and health focus on improving diet quality, whereas prevention and control of agriculture-associated diseases works to reduce exposure to food-borne disease and to diseases with important agricultural risk factors. All four areas contribute to the empowerment of women and communities and to supporting an enabling policy environment. The program builds partnerships, including with the private sector, to develop, use and disseminate technologies and tools for improved food security, nutrition and health. October 2016 - As a result of ...a particularly strong El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean, southern Africa is facing a devastating drought. Several seasons of failed rains in countries throughout the region have left nearly 30 million people facing food insecurity. In southern Angola, the drought has affected more than 1.25 million people, of whom 60% require immediate humanitarian assistance. Global acute malnutrition rates have exceeded 25% in some areas (well above the accepted emergency threshold of 15%). Water shortages have also increased, leading to the spread of water-borne disease and livestock deaths. With GAC's support , World Vision is working to meet the humanitarian needs of an estimated 65,000 drought-affected people in Benguela and Huila Provinces in southern Angola. Through support to the local health authorities, World Vision is improving access to screening and treatment for acute malnutrition in target communities. The repair or rehabilitation of local water points is providing access to safe water, thus saving lives and protecting livelihoods.

Gender-based inequalities alon...g the food production chain from farm to plate reduce people's ability to achieve food and nutritional security in developing countries. This project will examine this challenge through a book featuring the latest research and results. It aims to expand global conversations on gender and food security.Supporting women as producers and caretakersTo maximize the impact of agricultural development on food security, governments and communities must enhance women's roles as agricultural producers and primary caretakers for their families. Phase 1 of the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund's (CIFSRF) emphasized integrating gender considerations into food security research. Activities included assessing the extent of gender integration in projects and holding a workshop to strengthen gender analysis and integration, and monitoring skills. Sharing findings on gender and food securityIDRC held a writeshop in Edmonton during the International Food Security Dialogue to document gender results from CIFSRF projects. An editorial team from IDRC and the University of Alberta worked with authors to refine their papers. Participants completed 13 papers and chapters, which will be published in book format. This will make the findings more widely accessible to researchers, academics, policymakers, and development practitioners.Evidence from Africa, Asia, and Latin AmericaThe book provides empirical evidence and explores the gendered dimensions of food security. Drawing on studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, it -investigates how food security and gender inequity are conceptualized within interventions -assesses the impacts and outcomes of gender-responsive programs on food security and gender equity-addresses diverse approaches to gender research and practice New perspectives for a growing fieldThe papers draw on diverse theoretical perspectives, including transformative learning, feminist theory, deliberative democracy (where deliberation is central to decision-making), and technology adoption. The collection makes an important contribution to the growing literature on the challenges of gender equity in agricultural production.

This initiative aims to improv...e the health and nutrition status of poor and vulnerable mothers, newborns and children in select regions by working with local health authorities. It will directly address malnutrition in the first 1000 days of children's lives in targeted districts and inform national nutrition policies in the targeted countries. Malnutrition is the cause of over 3 million child deaths annually and results in illnesses such as stunting, wasting and anemia, as well as poor motor, cognitive and social development. The initiative will be implemented in Bangladesh (Thakurgaon District), Myanmar (Thabaung Township), Kenya (Elgeyo Marakwet county), Pakistan (Sukkur District), and Tanzania (Singida and Shinyanga Regions). The effects of malnutrition in these countries are significant as collectively they represent 13% of the global burden of stunting, 15% of the global burden of severe anaemia and 12% of the global burden of wasting. Such illnesses are especially pronounced in rural regions, such as those targeted by the project. The initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 2 million individuals, including more than 835,000 women, 740,000 children and 490,000 men, and indirectly reach an estimated 2.5 million individuals who are not targeted by the project but who will benefit from the strengthened health system and improved health services. Policy changes in nutrition and wider application of existing policies as a result of the project advocacy efforts will also have positive impact on indirect beneficiaries. In addition, the initiative's activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 3 million Canadians. Activities include: (1) recruiting, training and equipping community healthcare workers to promote and provide essential health services; (2) training local health councils in improved data analysis and reporting to inform planning and delivery of MNCH services; (3) raising awareness of key nutritional practices, including dietary diversity; (4) providing inputs and training in the development of home gardens; (5) informing and increasing community participation in policy dialogue with governments on MNCH issues; and, (6) implementing interactive media and linking Canadians with empowered youth in a mentorship program to improve the knowledge and ability of Canadians to engage in international MNCH and nutrition issues. It is implemented by World Vision Canada in collaboration with the Micronutrient Initiative, HarvestPlus, the Canadian Society for International Health, the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and the Hospital for Sick Children. Project implementation is also supported by the following local partners: in Bangladesh: World Vision Bangladesh, Institute of Public Health Nutrition, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh - Office of the Civil Surgeon Thakugaon; in Myanmar: World Vision International - Myanmar,

This project aims to improve t...he survival and well-being of children under the age of five in 15 African countries. The project seeks to deliver cost-effective life-saving nutrition and health services to children through semi-annual outreach events, also known as Child Health Days. These outreach events are designed to deliver health and nutrition services to children who would not normally be reached by the regular health care system. The most common services provided by these outreach events are vitamin A supplementation to prevent blindness and reduce child mortality rates, immunizations to prevent common childhood illnesses, and de-worming medication to improve the nutrition and general health of children. This project builds on previous support to Child Health Days through 'Scaling up Nutrition and Immunizations' and 'Child Health Days and Weeks'. The current project continues to support the Child Health Days delivery platform in countries where under-five mortality is high, while increasing focus on building the capacity of national governments to integrate and deliver these interventions in the long term./Ce projet vise à améliorer le bien-être et la survie des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans 15 pays africains par l'augmentation de la couverture d'interventions critiques en matière de santé et de nutrition.

The initiative aims to address... several development needs and challenges all linked to underlying poverty and lack of basic services in the remote rural areas in the Ramechap district in Nepal, in the Azabache and Nacaome areas in Honduras and in the Gourma province in Burkina Faso. The overall objective of the initiative is to improve the health of mothers and young children, and thus contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality, through assistance with village and household-scale infrastructure, parent health education and enhanced nutrition and food security. World Neighbours Canada aims to develop and implement training programs for women and men to learn about family planning options, to increase food crop production using sustainable and ecologically sound practices, to promote proper nutrition in infants and young children under 2 years of age that includes breast feeding promotion, developing and implementing water system plans with participation of users etc. The project proposes to benefit more than 50,000 women, men, girls and boys. World Neigbours Canada is working with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) in Nepal, L'Association d'Appui à la Promotion du Développement Durable des Communautés (APDC) in Burkina Faso, and Vecinos Honduras, in Honduras to implement this project. This project is part of Canada's commitment to maternal, newborn and child health programming.

March 2016 - Following a coup ...d'état in March 2013, the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) deteriorated rapidly, as inter-communal violence spun out of control and led to thousands of deaths, massive human displacement, and grave human rights abuses. Despite a transitional government in place and the presence of international troops, including a 10,000-person strong United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA), communities across CAR continue to be plagued by violence, armed criminality, and widespread humanitarian needs. At present, more than 2.3 million people, more than half the population, require humanitarian assistance, over 480,000 people are internally displaced, and 450,000 are living in neighbouring countries as refugees. Widespread insecurity and looting of humanitarian actors are hindering their ability to respond to needs relating to widespread food insecurity, high levels of child malnutrition, and maternal and child mortality rates among the highest in the world. With GAC's support, Action Against Hunger is improving the health and nutritional status of malnourished children in Bangui and surrounding areas. The project focuses on preventing and treating cases of severe acute malnutrition, enhancing nutritional surveillance and referral networks, and providing psychosocial assistance, benefitting over 104,000 conflict-affected people. Project activities include: (1) screening up to 100,200 children under five years old for malnutrition; (2) providing treatment to over 8,220 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition; (3) providing medical and nutritional supplies and equipment to 18 health structures; (4) providing training for up to 216 health staff and community health workers; and (5) providing psychosocial assistance, benefiting close to 3,950 conflict-affected people.

March 2016 - The Democratic Re...public of Congo (DRC) continues to experience one of the most complex and protracted humanitarian crises in the world, with numerous, large-scale displacement and returnee movements, extremely low level basic services leading to large-scale cholera and measles epidemics, increasing refugee populations, and over 50 different armed groups that continue to terrorize communities, particularly in Orientale, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Katanga provinces. At least 1.6 million people in the DRC are internally displaced and a further 500,000 Congolese are living as refugees in neighbouring countries. Approximately 5 million people are food insecure, and acute malnutrition is estimated at 8 per cent. Protection concerns remain very high, with sexual violence and other abuses related to the violence plaguing vast numbers of civilians. Humanitarian needs could further increase if insecurity grows in relation to the deepening political crisis over elections planned for late this year. Overall, an estimated 7.5 million people in the DRC (roughly 9% of the total population) are expected to require humanitarian assistance in 2016 (an increase of 500,000 over this time last year). With GAC's support, Action Against Hunger is providing assistance to address the urgent needs of up to 19,140 conflict-affected people in the province of North Kivu. This project focuses on increasing access to safe water and sanitation facilities, providing displaced people with basic household items, and preventing and treating cases of severe acute malnutrition. Project activities include: (1) constructing or rehabilitating ten water points; (2) constructing 200 latrines and providing hygiene supplies; (3) distributing non-food items and emergency shelter supplies to up to 750 households; (4) screening of up to 6,000 children under five years old for malnutrition; (5) treating up to 1,100 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition; and (6) providing medical and nutritional supplies, equipment, and staff training for six health structures.

November 2016 - The humanitari...an crisis arising from the 2015-2016 El Niño is continuing to deepen, with the United Nations estimating that more than 60 million people are now affected worldwide. While international donors, including Canada, have already stepped up with humanitarian assistance to save lives and protect livelihoods, a significant funding gap persists and humanitarian needs are expected to escalate well into 2017. The impact is most pronounced in Ethiopia, which experienced its worst drought in 50 years, leaving 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance. In the Americas, Haiti is one of the most affected countries, with a third consecutive year of drought, exacerbated by El Niño, leaving more than 3.6 million people food insecure. Similar impacts are being felt around the globe. To date, twenty three countries have appealed for help to meet critical needs, including food, agricultural support, and water and sanitation. In part with Canada's support, UNICEF is helping to meet the emergency food needs of drought-affected people in some of the countries and regions worst hit by El Nino, including: Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan in eastern Africa; Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe in southern Africa; and Mongolia, and the Pacific islands in the Asia Pacific region. Although specific programming differs based on each country context, UNICEF is saving lives and protecting livelihoods through the treatment or prevention of acute malnutrition, the provision of safe water and sanitation, and other activities designed to meet the specific needs of vulnerable women and children.

This project is part of DFATD'...s International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative. The internships focus on increasing the awareness, engagement, and participation of Aboriginal youth in international development, while providing them with opportunities to expand their employment skills or further their education. The Centre de solidarité internationale du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean initiative offers 16 internships for Aboriginals in three countries (Burkina Faso, Senegal and Equator) in the fields targeted by the eight local partners, namely ancestral knowledge, maternal health and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, valorisation and transformation of non-timber forest products, adaptation to climate change, environmental education, HIV/AIDS prevention, family planning and reproductive health. The project contributes to increasing male and female Aboriginal youth's employability, providing them the skills and knowledge they need to secure employment or pursue their studies.

March 2016 - Ethiopia now host...s one of the largest numbers of refugees in Africa, more than 820,000, from Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and several other countries. The largest refugee population, living primarily in the western Gambella region and numbering around 350,000, is from South Sudan. Consisting of over 90% women and children, this population is extremely vulnerable, suffering from high rates of acute malnutrition and having experienced shocking levels of violence and sexual abuse during their flight from their country. Despite the signing of a peace agreement in South Sudan, the violence has not subsided and refugees continue to arrive in Ethiopia, necessitating the establishment of new camps and ongoing support. With GAC's support, Action Against Hunger is addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of an estimated 23,000 South Sudanese refugees and host community members in or around the Pugnido II refugee camp in Ethiopia's Gambella region. Project activities include: (1) the systematic screening of children under five years old for acute malnutrition; (2) the provision of curative services through both static stabilization centres and outpatient feeding programs; and (3) the provision of outreach services to provide support and increase awareness of proper nutrition practices amongst vulnerable households.

October 2016 - As a result of ...a particularly strong El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean, Ethiopia is facing its worst food security crisis in thirty years. Failed rains in many areas of southern and eastern Ethiopia throughout 2015 left more than 10 million people in need of emergency food assistance, a massive increase from 2.9 million people at the beginning of the year. Malnutrition rates have also risen, with at least 400,000 children expected to require treatment for severe acute malnutrition in 2016. In addition, access to safe water, particularly in rural areas, continues to decline, leading to widespread livestock deaths and the threat of outbreaks of water-borne diseases such as cholera. Depending on events, the situation is expected to remain critical until May of 2017. With GAC's support, CARE is working to meet the immediate humanitarian needs of an estimated 13,750 drought-affected pastoralists in the Afar Region of north-eastern Ethiopia. Through support to the local health authorities, CARE is improving access to screening and treatment for acute malnutrition in target communities. In addition, cash transfers are helping beneficiaries to meet their basic needs.

The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda.
