Haiti is one of the countries ...most affected by maternal mortality and child morbidity. The towns of Leogane and Gressier are located in the West department, where the population is densest and highest. This is also where the use of health institutions, consultations, coverage and assisted deliveries are lowest. This initiative aims to reduce mortality rates among pregnant women, newborns and children under five in Haiti by supporting four healthcare facilities to provide obstetrics and neonatal emergency services. Activities include: 1) training healthcare personnel in reproductive health; 2) implementing a network of 50 polyvalent community healthcare officers to increase offer and usage of available maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services; 3) rehabilitating and building community healthcare centres to facilitate efficient service delivery; 4) stocking community healthcare centres in target communities with medical supplies, basic medicine and necessary medical equipment; and 5) implementing a functional and effective integrated approach and coordinating mechanism amongst main stakeholders. The project directly benefits approximately 30,000 women, men and children residing in the Léogâne and Gressier communities, and benefits indirectly 224,000 people living in these two communities surrounding areas. It also contributes to helping 15,000 people in Canada to understand issues related to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Haiti. The project is implemented by a consortium lead by the Léger Foundation in collaboration with the Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement (CCISD).

more
|
The project aims to restructur...e and boost the market for efficient stoves and clean energy in order to protect the environment, improve the health of women and children and strengthen women's economic power within new value chains for producing and marketing stoves and clean energy. The project supports the Government of Haiti with the implementation of the national action plan for stoves and clean energy. Project activities include: (1) providing training to some fifty businesses so that they may participate in the design and production of stoves using improved technologies, (2) providing businesses with support in marketing and creating business plans, and (3) providing the Haitian government with support in relation to capacity, and the development and application of regulations to improve market growth. The project aims to have 150,000 households adopt a clean and efficient technology as well as have 100 entrepreneurs in the wood charcoal sector adopt better practices with respect to cost-effective and energy-efficient approaches. By adopting energy efficiency into the sector, the project helps to reduce the sector's greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation.

The Sectoral Support Fund (SSF...) is a responsive mechanism used to advance Canada's development priorities in Honduras and engage with key partners through local calls for proposals. This project provides strategic and flexible support to key partners, through targeted technical assistance, the development and dissemination of case studies, regional lesson-learning events, and skill development and training for government and civil society personnel. The 2016-2017 call focused on human rights and strong partnership between the state and civil society. Selected initiatives contribute to the reduction of violence against women, children and youth, strengthening of local level actors in the prevention of violence, and promoting non-discriminatory media coverage in Honduras.

Technical support for universa...l health coverage pilots in Karnataka and Kerala
more
|
This project will provide evid...ence-based support to implement universal health coverage (UHC) pilot activities in two Indian states: Kerala and Karnataka. The project team will provide technical assistance to these early adopter states to assist with UHC intervention activities. The project aims to consolidate the Public Health Foundation of India's earlier achievements. The foundation responded to calls from Indian states to support the implementation of UHC, and spent three years engaging and collaborating with state and district officials. They provided technical assistance to help officials design and develop their universal health coverage action plans based on an extensive baseline assessment and top health priorities. This project will help strengthen knowledge and skills at the state and district levels to implement universal health coverage program action plans in Kerala and Karnataka. The project is expected to: -support officials to take action on recommended interventions-translate research and analysis into actionable knowledge -document intervention activities, timelines, responsibilities, and outcomes -deliver a universal health-coverage monitoring framework at the district level-create a toolkit and a model to adapt and scale up the project's methodology to other development contexts

Policy research institutions a...nd the health SDGs: Open data platforms for citizen-led monitoring
more
|
Successful achievement of the ...17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and 169 targets will require the participation of citizens that use and rely on local public services. Citizens have a unique legitimacy and capacity to create a civic SDG movement that can monitor the implementation of SDG-relevant commitments. This pilot project, one of four pilots exploring the feasibility of a Think Heath Initiative, will focus on citizen-generated data for monitoring the attainment of the SDGs at the local level.CEGSS, a Guatemalan think tank, will work with citizens' groups, health authorities, and policymakers to adapt and field-test a web-based citizen-led open data monitoring system for the implementation of SDG goals and targets related to health governance (primarily Goal 3 and Goal 16) in Guatemala. The web platform will collect and display macro information on healthcare services coverage, local performance of public healthcare services, and the responsiveness of health authorities to rectifying issues. This exercise will provide the opportunity to raise awareness of the SGDs and the monitoring framework in more than 30 municipalities.CEGSS will also mentor institutions in India, Peru, and Mexico that are establishing similar web-based monitoring systems. This project will generate lessons about how well-placed think tanks are to support civic awareness and civic engagement in SDG implementation, and to facilitate citizen-generated data; how to integrate monitoring expectations from both authorities and citizens that use public services; the establishment of an open access monitoring system that uses ICT technologies and could be adopted in different countries; and the unique and important role that think tanks can play in amplifying or empowering civic SDG movements. The longer-term vision is one where multiple country-level digital platforms can be linked, thus creating regional digital platforms — or ideally, a single global digital platform — featuring citizen-generated local data for numerous low- and middle-income countries around the world. If proven feasible, work of this nature could be a feature of the new Think Health Initiative.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world.

IMPROVING HEALTH DEVELOPMENT A...ND SERVICES MONITORING TO ADDRESS HEALTH INEQUITIES IN INDONESIA

Improving Health Development a...nd Services Monitoring to Address Health Inequities in Indonesia
more
|
Indonesia is undergoing rapid ...demographic and epidemiological changes. Its large and diverse population is changing, as are the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in the country. As a result, the Indonesian health system is struggling to deliver the services its people need. The Ministry of Health (MOH) is aware of the growing disparities in health services across the country's 500-plus districts and cities. It has introduced new financial and human resources policies and programs to ensure coverage and quality of care in disadvantaged areas. This three-year project aims to contribute to better and more equitable health development in Indonesia. It will do so through improved district-level monitoring of health services and Indonesians' health status. Researchers will refine and introduce an innovative measurement tool to judge whether the new measures are effective in improving service delivery and reducing health gaps. The MOH National Institute of Health Research and Development (NIHRD) developed the Public Health Development Index (PHDI). It tracks health development progress in every district, ranks the districts, and then identifies areas that are lagging behind. This will help create a better understanding of the reasons for different levels of progress. It will also produce evidence to inform health policy and programs. With IDRC support, NIHRD will enhance the index usability through consultations with experts and key stakeholders. The research team will test the selected index components and their aggregation in pilot districts. Expected results include: - an improved and more reliable Public Health Development Index; - better integration of the index into existing information monitoring systems; - better district government capacity to use the tool; -greater collaboration between district and central government; and, - greater use of sound evidence for priority-setting and decision-making at the district and national levels.

The project aims to improve in...comes, health, and the environment of the vulnerable and marginalized men and women dependent on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) economy in targeted areas in Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Java and Sulawesi. The project improves mining, environmental and social practices for men and women involved in the ASGM, including identifying alternatives to mercury use and training on safe handling of cyanide. The project also supports targeted subnational governments to better collaborate with the formal extractive sector and supports the formalization of ASGM activities through legal trade of responsible artisanal gold and value-added products in domestic and international markets. Activities include: (1) provide training on better practices for men and women miners; (2) provide training to targeted government and civil society groups on ASGM regulation and management; and (3) establish collaborative mechanisms with other relevant initiatives promoting responsible gold and diversification of the ASGM economy.

HOW CAN A GENDER LENS ENHANCE ...MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH SOCIAL ENTERPRISES IN AFRICA? (IMCHA)

How can a gender lens enhance ...maternal and child health social enterprises in Africa? (IMCHA)
more
|
Research shows that high gende...r inequity translates into poor health for mothers, pregnant women, and children. At the community and individual level, gender inequities and disparities can underlie dimensions of poverty among women. Low socioeconomic status can be associated with high fertility rates, low educational attainment, higher burden of disease, and HIV/AIDS. Gender inequities and disparities also affect access to healthcare services for women and children, particularly in fragile contexts.Social enterprise-based models have great potential to improve maternal and child health (MCH) services and they can also be used to provide an improved source of income for women. A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, such as a cooperative or a community organization. An initial study of social enterprise approaches to MCH care in Africa identified two primary social enterprise models: one based on primary health clinics and one based on mobile community health promoters and sales agents. Gender dynamics played an important role between women and healthcare providers, healthcare providers and social enterprises, and social enterprises and their impact on the individual or community. However, these relationships have not been adequately explored in relation to their impact on maternal and child healthcare services and related outcomes for women and children. The aim of this project, implemented by BRAC Africa, is to improve the understanding of how gender and the social enterprise approach can improve access to maternal and child health services and to outcomes across Africa and globally. The research methodology will include: a systematic literature review and mapping on gender equality, maternal and child health, and social enterprise; a survey to provide basic insight and foundational knowledge into structures and practices; and gender analysis involving both primary and secondary research using key informant interviews and focus group discussions. This will build on an existing IMCHA projects in partnership with BRAC Africa in order to expand the knowledge base about gender equality and social enterprises targeted at improving maternal and child health outcomes as well as identifying practical lessons and promising strategies. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. This project aims to serve chi...ldren less than five years of age with vitamin A supplementation and de-worming programs in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya. The mortality rate for children less than five years of age is 73/1000 live births in Kenya and 108/1000, in Côte d'Ivoire, in 2015. Vitamin A deficiency and worm infection causes and worsens malnutrition, anemia and diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, which are a leading cause of death for children less than five years of age in these countries. Currently, these services are provided in both countries through schools, leaving children younger than five years unreached; a gap which this project is addressing. This project is providing improved delivery of these essential health services in communities where the actual coverage for children under five years of age is low. Project activities include: (1) increasing access to vitamin A and preventative de-worming treatments using existing community-based delivery systems; (2) strengthening the local health care system by training local health workers and community health volunteers in vitamin A supplementation and de-worming; (3) creating and utilizing a standardized toolkit for training on the implementation of responsive combined deworming and Vitamin A supplementation program targeting pre-school aged children; and (4) improving community engagement around vitamin A deficiency and de-worming in young children through responsive communication and engagement plans implementation as well as participatory activities with communities members, community leaderships and health structures and other gender equality and women's groups. The local partners are the Medical Assistance Programs in Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire which implement this project in 5 regions of Côte d'Ivoire (Gneby-Tiassa-Me, Bélier, Bounkani-Gontougo, Gbeke, Gôh and Indenie Duablin) and in three counties of Kenya (Siaya, Kwale and Kilifi). Vitamin Angels, a US-based NGO, is also a partner and provides in-kind contributions of albendazole (de-worming treatments) and vitamin A supplements for the duration of the project. This project directly impacts 1.4 million children and 16,600 adults working as community health workers or volunteers. It will also indirectly impact more than 5 million people who will benefit from positive outcomes on health in the community. STRENGTHENING RESEARCH QUALITY..., LEADERSHIP, NETWORKING, AND COMMUNICATIONS OF HEALTH IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH PROJECTS IN WEST AFRICA AND MENA

Strengthening research quality..., leadership, networking, and communications of health implementation research projects in West Africa and MENA
more
|
Maternal, child and adolescent... health, including sexual and reproductive health, are critical to the well-being of individuals, families and communities across West Africa and the Middle East and North Africa regions. Despite some improvement in health outcomes in these regions, the progress has been uneven and recently tested due to growing economic and political challenges. In response, IDRC launched a call for proposals for implementation research projects in two thematic areas: i) adolescent sexual and reproductive health and ii) health information systems. Research on implementation (often referred to as implementation research) is being increasingly used to understand how certain health interventions work in the field. Results can contribute to efforts to address issues such as economic viability, potential for scale up, meaningful engagement with community groups, means of limiting gender-based or other socio-economic driven discrimination, and improving distribution channels, among other outcomes. Projects selected within these IDRC-supported regional and thematic cohorts of implementation research grants will benefit from intentional and responsive support activities to strengthen individual and cohort-wide research quality, leadership, networking, and communications. Beginning from early stages of the grants, various support and learning activities will accompany the cohorts of projects throughout their implementation. Collectively, these activities will help optimize the potential for reach, uptake, and influence at local, national and regional levels. By creating opportunities and spaces to gather, learn, debate, reflect, and improve, it is expected that the outcomes will include strengthened individual capacities and peer learning; stronger linkages within the cohort and expanded networks beyond; greater reach and relevance through the development of joint knowledge product; and more effective and nuanced influence strategies and related activities towards greater sustained positive impact.

The project aims to raise the ...economic potential of poor and marginalized people in Malawi through integrated activities that create sustainable bases for increased income at the household level. The core of the project mainly targets women and provides both women and men with skills to increase their productivity either through vocational training leading to employment, micro-enterprise development, or increased agricultural production. In order to maximise its results, the project also invests in education to help children have the necessary foundation for further training in the future, and in basic health to help reduce the incidence of health related issues that affect productivity, especially for women./ Le projet vise à hausser le potentiel économique des pauvres et les personnes vulnérables du Malawi par le biais d'une initiative intégrée qui met l'accent sur des activités générant des bases durables pour augmenter les revenus des foyers.

The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda.

The project aims to improve th...e health of populations living in four regions in Mali (Kayes, Tombouctou, Gao, and Kidal), with a primary focus on women and children. Project objectives are: improvement of health services management by key stakeholders (community health associations, territorial communities, and decentralized health institutions); improvement of the quality of social and health services provided to populations in the four regions, specifically targeting women and children; and increasing the usage by these populations of preventive and curative health services. The project supports the Ministry of Health in implementing its sector strategy, focusing on improving geographic and financial accessibility of health services, meeting demand, improving service quality and usage, and building institutional capacity.Through the technical assistance (International Health Unit consortium/CARE Canada/Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI)) as well as the direct financial assistance components, this project supports the Division for Regional Health (DRS) and the Division for Regional Social Development (DRDS) in the regions of Gao, Kidal, Tombouctou and Kayes. The project supports civil cociety through the Fédération nationale des associations de santé communautaire (FENASCOM) and its members as well as the community health associations (ASACOs). It also provides support at the local level to community associations to which the Government of Mali has transferred health care capacities./ Le projet vise à améliorer la santé des populations dans quatre régions du Mali (Kayes, Tombouctou, Gao et Kidal), se concentrant principalement sur la santé des femmes et des enfants.

This project builds on a previ...ous initiative supported by DFATD supporting the Mali Red Cross' efforts towards the Government of Mali's plans to reduce maternal and child mortality in the regions of Koulikoro and Sikasso. Initiative activities include: (1) raising awareness in communities on MNCH services available and ways to prevent illness through proper hygiene and sanitation; (2) training professional and community health workers, including volunteers, in the delivery and promotion of integrated packages of MNCH services; (3) training health staff in improved MNCH delivery, covering aspects such as management of service delivery, supervision of health workers, and procurement of medicines and supplies; (4) training health staff to collect, analyse and use administrative MNCH data to plan for improved MNCH service delivery and essentially improved health outcomes; and, (5) equipping health facilities with essential supplies and equipment. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.1 million women, men, adolescents, children and newborns. In addition, approximately 3.2 million adults and children are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative.

TOWARDS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A... GLOBAL HEALTH INSTITUTE IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA
more
|
Towards the establishment of a... global health institute in the Middle East and North Africa
more
|
The Middle East and North Afri...ca (MENA) region is at the epicentre of many large-scale humanitarian crises that are altering the nature and magnitude of health demands and related service delivery. The health needs of individuals in host countries or escaping war zones remain underserved or unmet entirely. Of specific concern is the impact of displacement and war on women and children. Acute and abrupt shifts in lives and livelihoods translates to sudden changes in gender roles, societal norms, and familial burdens — often disproportionately shouldered by women and young girls. Countries of the MENA region are also witnessing a nutrition transition from traditional to more westernized diets, giving rise to alarming rates of obesity and exacerbating economic and disease burdens. Although these experiences are pronounced in MENA, they are not unique to the region. The Global Health Institute, which will be housed at the American University of Beirut, in Lebanon, will address pressing challenges to health and development in MENA through applied research programs on topics of particular concern to the region. The Institute will serve as a hub for engaging regional thought leaders and emerging researchers to encourage dialogue and exchange, and to strengthen the collective voice and impact of their efforts. A dedicated focus on supporting a body of high quality and locally generated knowledge on issues such as refugee health, conflict medicine, poor nutrition, obesity, and related diseases will position the Institute to actively shape research agendas, policies, and actions. At present, these are defined, in large part, by individuals and institutions based outside the region. The Institute will also serve as an incubator for investigating innovative and context-specific methods to address global health challenges, focus on developing capacity and fostering leaders, and organize products and platforms to showcase Global South perspectives.

Statistical Alliance for Vital... Events: Strengthening Reporting & Program Uses of Facility-based Child & Maternal Mortality in Ethiopia and Mozambique
more

Most deaths in sub-Saharan Afr...ica occur without medical attention and hence the Cause of Death (COD) remain unknown. This lack of information greatly limits evidence-based planning and slows progress in the attainment of health targets including those related to maternal and child health. To address this, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the enhancement of both community and facility-based reporting of COD. The WHO also emphasizes the crucial need of integrating COD data within Health Information Management Systems (HMIS) and Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, and ensuring that these data are used by health ministries and disease control programs. The researchers aim to address the priority of improving facility-based reporting of COD data in Ethiopia and Mozambique by training doctors and hospital administrators on the use of simple electronic systems for capturing COD reliably, and promoting the use of these data to improve better policies and programs for maternal and child health. By complementing their efforts to strengthen community-based reporting of CODs in their ongoing IMCHA project, they will demonstrate the feasibility of implementing the WHO recommendations on the generation and use of comprehensive, high quality COD data in health policy and program development. The team is building on an established partnership between the Statistical Alliance for Vital Events (St. Michaels Hospital, Canada), The Ethiopia Public health Association, the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (Mozambique), and St. John's Research Institute (India). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's prioritization of civil registration and vital statistics systems as a valuable public investment for safeguarding the rights of women and children, improving policy development and program delivery for maternal and child health, and strengthening accountability. The researchers will leverage opportunities for continued engagement with the Centre of Excellence for CRVS Systems housed at IDRC.

This is the second project in ...a series that provides support to the Government of Mozambique's efforts to achieve the goals and objectives of its Health Sector Strategic Plan. The project forms the cornerstone of CIDA's support for the achievement of development objectives in health in Mozambique. Through this project, CIDA works in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Mozambique to strengthen the effectiveness of its aid. Efforts are focused on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increasing coordination and harmonization among donors; and reinforcing mutual accountability. Sector support projects such as this one also help foster greater policy dialogue between CIDA, government, and partners, which helps to reinforce efforts for effective, focused aid and long-term development results. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of this project is undertaken in coordination with other donors. The project aims to achieve not only nation-wide progress in the health sector, but also progress in other areas. It aims to achieve improvements in the Government of Mozambique's ability to manage and administer its health sector, particularly improvements in transparency, financial management, and accountability. These improvements are an important factor in ensuring that the Government of Mozambique can maintain the progress achieved through this project.
