This project aims to serve chi...ldren less than five years of age with vitamin A supplementation and de-worming programs in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya. The mortality rate for children less than five years of age is 73/1000 live births in Kenya and 108/1000, in Côte d'Ivoire, in 2015. Vitamin A deficiency and worm infection causes and worsens malnutrition, anemia and diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, which are a leading cause of death for children less than five years of age in these countries. Currently, these services are provided in both countries through schools, leaving children younger than five years unreached; a gap which this project is addressing. This project is providing improved delivery of these essential health services in communities where the actual coverage for children under five years of age is low. Project activities include: (1) increasing access to vitamin A and preventative de-worming treatments using existing community-based delivery systems; (2) strengthening the local health care system by training local health workers and community health volunteers in vitamin A supplementation and de-worming; (3) creating and utilizing a standardized toolkit for training on the implementation of responsive combined deworming and Vitamin A supplementation program targeting pre-school aged children; and (4) improving community engagement around vitamin A deficiency and de-worming in young children through responsive communication and engagement plans implementation as well as participatory activities with communities members, community leaderships and health structures and other gender equality and women's groups. The local partners are the Medical Assistance Programs in Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire which implement this project in 5 regions of Côte d'Ivoire (Gneby-Tiassa-Me, Bélier, Bounkani-Gontougo, Gbeke, Gôh and Indenie Duablin) and in three counties of Kenya (Siaya, Kwale and Kilifi). Vitamin Angels, a US-based NGO, is also a partner and provides in-kind contributions of albendazole (de-worming treatments) and vitamin A supplements for the duration of the project. This project directly impacts 1.4 million children and 16,600 adults working as community health workers or volunteers. It will also indirectly impact more than 5 million people who will benefit from positive outcomes on health in the community. This initiative aims to reduce... mother and child mortality rates in 15 areas of the Tshopo and Ituri provincial health divisions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Eastern Province. Health divisions have poorly trained workers, little capacity to plan and high rates of mothers and Childs mortality. Through this initiative, the delivery of adapted health services to mothers and children (age 0-5) will be improved by increasing the professional skills of male and female health workers. Furthermore, supporting the local financial capacity will improve health services planning and access to quality data. To increase use of these health services, education campaigns will be launched to teach about reducing maternity risks, family planning, sexually transmitted diseases, as well as early pregnancy.Activities include: 1) training health care providers; 2) strengthening executives' management skills; 3) building five maternity wards and 15 maternity rehabilitation wards; 4) providing equipment and medicines; 5) launching awareness campaigns for the prevention of mother-child HIV/AIDS transmission; 6) assisting 3,500 seropositive women and newborns; 7) launching an early pregnancy prevention campaign; 8) organising knowledge sharing and networking events for the general Canadian public in order to stimulate their commitment to support MNCH initiatives in developing countries.Direct beneficiaries are: 300,000 pregnant women, 90,000 spouses (men), 43,000 youth (age 15-24) as well as 455,000 newborns and children under five, of which 52% are girls. These beneficiaries will be better informed and/or will use the improved health services. More than 700 health care providers (nurses, doctors, specialists), and 355 health care managers and executives will have stronger professional skills.Oxfam Quebec is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: : Anti-Bwaki Mothers' Association, Ituri Provincial Health Division and Tshopo Provincial Health Division./ Cette initiative vise à réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants dans 15 zones des Divisions provinciales de la santé de la Tshopo et de l'Ituri, en Province Orientale de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). The purpose of this project is... to improve the health care systems for and by women and those most in need. The goal is to improve citizen engagement and to make public institutions more responsive to people's needs and rights through a technological platform. The initiative favours targeted zones (urban and rural): (1) citizen and health officers freely expressing their opinions about their health system using new technologies, including mobile applications, text message platforms, blogs and wikis, (2) use of helpful and useable data by local institutions and by national decision makers to improve health systems and make them more democratic, (3) improved advocacy to make the health systems in the three countries better adapted to the needs of women and those most in need. The project's activities include the following: (1) conducting social integration activities and awareness campaigns to empower the people, notably women and those most in need, in terms of using technology, (2) training local institutions so they can collect, analyze and transmit information regarding health services to the people, (3) developing technologies (mobile application for smartphones and tablets, automated information-sharing module) to allow users to express their opinions about the health system, to allow staff to register complaints and to allow decision makers to better understand the people's needs and grievances, (4) developing a text message platform that allows people to access information on the health system's services and access, including rights to health, (5) training and coaching non-governmental organizations and public institutions to facilitate policy dialogue in order to provide better access to health services that meet people's needs.

The project aims to improve th...e well-being of children and youth in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through the prevention of violence against children and youth, and the improvement of services for street children and at-risk families in five communes in Kinshasa. To do so, the project supports outreach activities and programs that focus on improving services offered at protection and health centres, taking into account the particular needs of girls and boys. The project also seeks to improve key public policies for child protection and strengthen respect of their rights.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR CRVS ...SYSTEMS ACTIVITY BUDGET LINE: OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT
more
|
Centre of Excellence for CRVS ...systems activity budget line: Outreach and engagement
more
|
Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events, including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. When integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. Such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Where global norms, standards, and tools exist, they are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information, including by developing an open-access electronic platform so that key resources will be readily accessible. It will facilitate exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the 'Every Woman Every Child' initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led Investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing. This project enables the Centre of Excellence to organize and/or participate in meetings and events that encourage targeted and continuous engagement with relevant global, regional, and country-level stakeholders. This will contribute to the development and evolution of the Centre of Excellence, and mobilize the community of practice to deliver key priorities that inform and advance CRVS globally. Stakeholder engagement and regular coordination will ensure that activities of the Centre of Excellence do not duplicate the work of existing entities, but rather build on what exists, support ongoing initiatives, and add value to efforts aimed at strengthening CRVS systems in countries eligible for Global Financing Facility financing. The project will also facilitate multi-sectoral engagement and build momentum to ensure that CRVS systems are foundational to health information systems.

|
Maternal, newborn, child, and ...adolescent health, one of the Canadian government's development priorities, is a key element of the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Good health and well-being. Evidence for building integrated and equitable health systems for women, adolescents, and children is urgently needed as countries strive to improve accountability and access to quality health services. IDRC's Maternal and Child Health program has supported a rich portfolio of research projects and a large number of researchers, research networks, and global institutions that contribute to sustainable solutions that strengthen primary health care systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).Building on this strong foundation, IDRC is ensuring that its approach of addressing the structural and root problems to strengthen health systems is communicated, understood, and adopted. The Maternal and Child Health program is supporting LMIC researchers, policymakers and implementers in a participatory manner and providing them with opportunities to influence national, regional, and global agendas through the dissemination and use of research results. This project aims to disseminate the approach and work supported by the Maternal and Child Health program in order to give the results greater visibility and reach. This will be accomplished through the development of a suite of communication products that disseminate research results and the strategic involvement of grantees in key events to influence policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities. Funds will also support knowledge translation activities to take advantage of opportunities that enable the mobilization of knowledge into policy processes.

COMMUNICATING THE CONTRIBUTION...S OF THINK TANKS TO THE HEALTH SDGS
more
|
Communicating the contribution...s of Think Tanks to the health SDGs
more
|
The Think Health Initiative en...courages the involvement of policy research institutions in the implementation and monitoring of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fosters linkages between the local, national, and global efforts of these institutions. It has already gained momentum through a series of consultations and engagements with strategic stakeholders. This project will allow the Initiative to broaden its engagement process and to produce, disseminate, and translate the multiple knowledge products that will anchor that engagement process. While administratively this is a standalone project, it is linked conceptually and in purpose to the other Think health Initiative consultations and pilot projects. The knowledge products produced will help to solidify and expand the joint ownership and involvement of existing strategic collaborating stakeholders known as the THINK_SDG network. Crucially, these knowledge products will also be used to engage and attract potential funding partners. Given the variety of stakeholders being targeted, the knowledge products will be a mix of academic papers, blogs, and social media contributions. The greatest emphasis will be on high-quality academic papers, given the high impact that the THINK_SDG network members are capable of attracting via this medium. Among the products to be supported under this initiative are four open-access articles in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), initiating a BMJ mini-series on the contribution of policy research institutions and the health-related SDGs. Other products include a special issue of the journal Global Health Governance that features eight regional papers describing the status of health-related SDG implementation in each region. This will provide an important and unprecedented global snapshot of the status of SDG implementation around the world, halfway through the first 1000 days of SDG implementation. The project will also involve the production and open-access dissemination of up to four blogs to be featured on the websites of the BMJ, the Think Tank Initiative (TTI), IDRC, and/or the THINK_SDG initiative hosted by the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

REGIONAL CONSULTATION ON THE I...MPLEMENTATION OF THE HEALTH-RELATED SDGS IN WEST AFRICA

Regional consultation on the i...mplementation of the health-related SDGs in West Africa
more
|
The Sustainable Development Go...als (SDGs), signed by 193 UN member states, provide an empowering and inclusive vision for development. During the critical first 1,000 days of SDG implementation, actions taken by all stakeholders — public agencies, research institutions, civil society, and the private sector — will lay the foundations for the success or failure of Agenda 2030. This project will provide an opportunity to improve understanding of the status of SDG implementation, governance arrangements, and the civic engagement needed to accelerate the implementation of the health-related SDGs across West Africa.During the last 12 months, IDRC sponsored a series of global consultations on this topic, with the intention of creating momentum for an evidence-based approach to the health-related SDGs that explicitly appreciates the contribution of policy research institutions. This project supported a West Africa regional consultation on May 2-3 in Dakar, Senegal. Cohosted by IDRC, the West African Health Organization, and the Consortium pour la recherche économique et social (CRES), the consultation brought together representatives from the West African Ministries of Health, Ministries of Statistics, policy research institutions, and regional health organizations. The consultation explored the implementation and monitoring of the health-related SDGs and the role of research institutions and civil society organizations in this process. This project is one component of a larger suite of activities designed to lay the foundations for a prospective new program, the Think Health Initiative.

Support to Canadian Conference... on Global Health 2017, 2018, and 2019
more
|
IDRC's Maternal and Child Heal...th (MCH) program has supported the annual Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) every year for more than ten years. Now in its 23rd consecutive year, the CCGH is the major global health conference in Canada. It focuses entirely on global health, is peer-reviewed, and is the primary space for Canadians working in global health to connect with each other and with stakeholders on an annual basis. The conference is a mix of plenary, workshops, oral and poster presentations, and it aims for a balance between theory and practice. It engages healthcare practitioners, researchers, academics, educators, policymakers, and community advocates from both formal and informal systems of care. Given the particular audience that attends these conferences, it is the ideal location to showcase IDRC and MCH's contributions to Canadian global health priorities. This grant to the Canadian Society of International Health will bring delegates from low and middle-income countries to the conference and will ensure that IDRC has the flexibility to organize specific panels and side events. Being a sponsor confers these privileges as well as the opportunity to provide program and theme input, to have a booth, and to be featured in promotional materials. The 2017 conference will be held in Ottawa from October 29–31. The theme, congruent with and inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals, is Leaving no one behind: Reflection for action in a changing world. The 2018 conference will be in Toronto and the theme is currently undecided. No specific details are yet known about the location or theme of the 2019 conference. The 2017 conference will be partially funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

ACCELERATING IMPLEMENTATION OF... THE HEALTH SDGS – THE ROLE OF SOUTHERN THINK TANKS PHASE II
more
|
Accelerating Implementation of... the Health SDGs – the Role of Southern Think Tanks Phase II
more
|
The Sustainable Development Go...als (SDGs) provide an inclusive vision for development in which health is a central component. The synergies inherent in the SDGs allow policy makers to address health as a precondition, outcome and indicator of successful sustainable development. This project will promote a governance-for-health lens and the political determinants of SDG implementation. Phase One of the project (108233) established a network (THINK_SDGs) of think tanks and policy research institutions working on health policy and SDG implementation. This group conducted regional studies on SDG status, spoke at global meetings (G7, G20, and World Health Summit), and authored regional papers in high profile journals. Furthermore, phase one also established regional hubs (South Asia, East Africa, West Africa, and Latin America) which strengthened collaboration between stakeholders, policy makers and civil society at the regional and global levels. IDRC understands that policy research institutions contribute to SDG implementation through the production of high quality evidence, data and analysis. This project seeks to continue the momentum of the Think_SDGs network and the regional hubs, while increasing the project's impact at the national level. A closer collaboration with policy research institutions locally will further contribute towards health-related SDG implementation at the national level. Through a complementary movement from global-to-local and from local-to-global, the project aims to facilitate the exchange of lessons learnt across regions and the diffusion of knowledge as a global public good. This RSP is a component of a larger effort to develop a new program, provisionally called Think Health. This would be a multi-donor, multi-year program of support to strengthen policy research institutions in lower and middle income countries (LMICs) working on the health-related SDGs. Through its support to these institutions, the future program will aim to strengthen national health policies and health systems and attain the health-related SDGs.

SUPPORTING THE FIFTH GLOBAL SY...MPOSIUM ON HEALTH SYSTEMS RESEARCH: ADVANCING HEALTH SYSTEMS FOR ALL IN THE SDG ERA

Supporting the Fifth Global Sy...mposium on Health Systems Research: Advancing Health Systems for All in the SDG Era
more
|
The Fifth Global Symposium on ...Health Systems Research will be held in Liverpool, United Kingdom, from 8 October to 12 October, 2018. The Symposium theme, Advancing Health Systems for All in the SDG Era is highly relevant for IDRC.This grant continues IDRC's strategic decision of supporting the biennial Global Symposia on Health Systems Research (Montreaux 2010, Beijing 2012, Cape Town 2014 and Vancouver 2016). These symposia are the only global fora systematically bringing together the International Health Systems and Policy Research (HSPR) community. HSPR is a multidisciplinary field that explores the success and failures of health interventions and programmes, identifies the interconnections between health policy and health systems, and highlights the social and political nature of health. Furthermore, the focus of HSPR is predominantly on low- and middle-income countries. HSPR is fundamental to improving maternal, newborn, adolescent, and child health in low- and middle-income countries. The Global Symposia always attract researchers as well as health system decision makers, health practitioners, health advocates, activists, journalists, and students. Thus, Liverpool 2018 offers an excellent opportunity to: 1) showcase results from IDRC's health research programmes, 2) interact with key HSPR stakeholders, 3) understand new emerging priorities in global health and 4) engage IDRC grantees and other LMIC voices in the debates. The majority of IDRC's financial support will be used to bring up to thirty delegates from low and middle income countries to the 5th Global Symposium. A smaller portion of IDRC's contribution will be directed towards thematic satellite sessions and enhancement of symposium communications to encourage increased engagement with francophone stakeholders. Funding for the Symposium is being provided by numerous other organizations and foundations in addition to IDRC.

International Health Regulatio...ns (IHR) National Focal Point (NFP) Capacity Building Missions
more
|
In collaboration with the Pan ...American Health Organization (PAHO), PHAC participates as technical experts in National Focal Point Capacity Building Missions. All Member States are required to have a NFP which must establish/strengthen mechanisms for collecting and disseminating information on public health risks, developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and exchanging experiences regarding the operational functioning of the IHR NFPs in the Region of the Americas. The goal is to strengthen overall capacity for detection, assessment, notification, and response to deal with public health events/emergencies. The Missions specifically identify and discuss: -Roles and responsibilities of IHR NFPs; -IHR NFP mechanisms for information dissemination and communication; -NFP procedures and inter-sectorial collaboration; -Gaps/needs discussion; -Drafting of basic IHR NFP SOPs/communication protocols; and -Suggestions for strengthening inter-sectorial connectivity. These Missions support of Canada's G7 commitment, as well as Worth Health Assembly, Global Health Security Agenda, and 2016 North American Leaders' Summit commitments to support IHR implementation in the Americas by continuing to provide expert technical assistance to strengthen and maintain core capacities. During 2016-17, Canada provided in-kind support (salary only) for NFP missions to Suriname, Guyana and Belize. PAHO covered all other costs associated with these capacity building missions.

This project aims to reduce th...e number of children under the age of five who are dying from diarrhea in five Nigerian states. This project works closely with communities, the Government of Nigeria, and the private sector to build a sustainable, local market for oral rehydration salts and zinc - the recommended treatment for diarrhea. Combined, these two simple, highly effective, and affordable treatments can reduce the likelihood of diarrhea deaths in young children by up to 93%. The project works to encourage investment by Nigerian pharmaceutical importers and manufacturers to ensure a better supply of these low-cost treatments in Nigeria, and better distribution of the treatments in clinics and private shops in hard-to-reach areas. This innovative, private-sector oriented project, also seeks to educate caregivers and health workers in the use of oral rehydration salts and zinc to effectively and safely treat diarrhea in children. The project aims to increase the use of these life-saving treatments - from less than 1% currently to over 50% by 2017 - to reach an estimated 4.2 million children./ Ce projet a pour but de réduire le nombre d'enfants de moins de cinq ans qui meurent de la diarrhée dans cinq États du Nigéria.

The project contributes to imp...roving maternal, newborn and child health, protecting children and preventing sexual and gender-based violence by supporting the production and nationwide broadcast of radio serial dramas. These dramas provide information, tools and resources to stimulate social change, raise the awareness and improve the overall health and well-being of the audience. The dramas use characters and settings that reflect people's daily lives and current impressions of health and social issues. Produced in the most commonly spoken languages in the Democratic Republic of Congo, these dramas use the country's most economical and far-reaching mass media mechanism. The project promotes positive behavioural changes related to themes such as: immunization for all children and pregnant women; improving child nutrition; the proper use of treated bed nets to prevent malaria; child spacing and delaying marriage and onset of childbearing to promote the health of mothers; birth registration; and positive behaviours for both women and men with regard to gender equality and HIV/AIDS prevention./ Le projet contribue à l'amélioration de la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile, ainsi qu'à la protection de l'enfance et la prévention des violences sexuelles et basées sur le genre, par son appui à la production et à la diffusion de feuilletons radiophoniques à l'échelle nationale.

The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results.

Statistical Alliance for Vital... Events: Strengthening Reporting & Program Uses of Facility-based Child & Maternal Mortality in Ethiopia and Mozambique
more
|
Most deaths in sub-Saharan Afr...ica occur without medical attention and hence the Cause of Death (COD) remain unknown. This lack of information greatly limits evidence-based planning and slows progress in the attainment of health targets including those related to maternal and child health. To address this, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the enhancement of both community and facility-based reporting of COD. The WHO also emphasizes the crucial need of integrating COD data within Health Information Management Systems (HMIS) and Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, and ensuring that these data are used by health ministries and disease control programs. The researchers aim to address the priority of improving facility-based reporting of COD data in Ethiopia and Mozambique by training doctors and hospital administrators on the use of simple electronic systems for capturing COD reliably, and promoting the use of these data to improve better policies and programs for maternal and child health. By complementing their efforts to strengthen community-based reporting of CODs in their ongoing IMCHA project, they will demonstrate the feasibility of implementing the WHO recommendations on the generation and use of comprehensive, high quality COD data in health policy and program development. The team is building on an established partnership between the Statistical Alliance for Vital Events (St. Michaels Hospital, Canada), The Ethiopia Public health Association, the Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (Mozambique), and St. John's Research Institute (India). The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's prioritization of civil registration and vital statistics systems as a valuable public investment for safeguarding the rights of women and children, improving policy development and program delivery for maternal and child health, and strengthening accountability. The researchers will leverage opportunities for continued engagement with the Centre of Excellence for CRVS Systems housed at IDRC.

The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda.

Policy research institutions a...nd the health SDGs: Open data platforms for citizen-led monitoring
more
|
Successful achievement of the ...17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and 169 targets will require the participation of citizens that use and rely on local public services. Citizens have a unique legitimacy and capacity to create a civic SDG movement that can monitor the implementation of SDG-relevant commitments. This pilot project, one of four pilots exploring the feasibility of a Think Heath Initiative, will focus on citizen-generated data for monitoring the attainment of the SDGs at the local level.CEGSS, a Guatemalan think tank, will work with citizens' groups, health authorities, and policymakers to adapt and field-test a web-based citizen-led open data monitoring system for the implementation of SDG goals and targets related to health governance (primarily Goal 3 and Goal 16) in Guatemala. The web platform will collect and display macro information on healthcare services coverage, local performance of public healthcare services, and the responsiveness of health authorities to rectifying issues. This exercise will provide the opportunity to raise awareness of the SGDs and the monitoring framework in more than 30 municipalities.CEGSS will also mentor institutions in India, Peru, and Mexico that are establishing similar web-based monitoring systems. This project will generate lessons about how well-placed think tanks are to support civic awareness and civic engagement in SDG implementation, and to facilitate citizen-generated data; how to integrate monitoring expectations from both authorities and citizens that use public services; the establishment of an open access monitoring system that uses ICT technologies and could be adopted in different countries; and the unique and important role that think tanks can play in amplifying or empowering civic SDG movements. The longer-term vision is one where multiple country-level digital platforms can be linked, thus creating regional digital platforms — or ideally, a single global digital platform — featuring citizen-generated local data for numerous low- and middle-income countries around the world. If proven feasible, work of this nature could be a feature of the new Think Health Initiative.

This initiative aims to reduce... the number of deaths caused by diarrheal diseases by reducing sanitation risks in the most vulnerable zones of Artibonite. The initiative will also aim to improve access to potable water, to sanitation, and will make concerted efforts to sensitize families of the most vulnerable women and children to the benefits of improved hygiene practices. This UNICEF initiative will focus on the provinces of Artibonite and Centre, where cholera remains an ever-present threat and where diarrheal diseases remain the most common cause of mortality among children under 5 years of age. UNICEF will work closely with the Government of Haiti and with other important stakeholders who work in water sanitation, and hygiene, both at the national and regional level to maximise coordination and impact of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions. The project aims to improve access to 240,000 people, including women and children, to drinking water in communities across the provinces of Artibonite and Centre. The project will work to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in 140 schools, as well as establish well-managed and sustainable WASH systems in 30 clinics and hospitals. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.

The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations.
