This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.

The project aims to improve th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of some of the most vulnerable women and adolescent girls in six districts of Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique. It addresses some of the main SRHR barriers facing women and girls through three interrelated and mutually reinforcing fronts: improving the supply of services, so that quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services are available and effectively delivered; increasing the demand for and use of SRH services, which requires an environment where partners, families and communities understand the importance of SRHR and value women's and girls' decision-making power; and enhancing the use of SRHR information and evidence by key stakeholders.Project activities include: (1) building capacity of key district-level health workers; (2) addressing weaknesses with infrastructure, equipment and services (such as ensuring confidentiality); (3) strengthening referral systems, including for complicated post-abortion cases; (4) engaging men and boys as partners for change, sensitising community leaders, engaging community health committees; (5) providing family planning services through community health workers; and (6) generating and disseminating gender-sensitive research on SRHR and improving the government's capacity to collect, analyse and use SRH data effectively.

The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results.

This project aims to work, ove...r a four year period, in collaboration with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and to their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project will address this inequality by improving the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H'Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam).Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives. The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 women) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component. This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam. PENDING REVISION BY PROJECT BR...OWSER TEAMThe Project aims to reduce the incidence of early pregnancy in Nicaragua by strengthening the country's integrated approach to adolescent development. Nicaragua has one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in Latin America with approximately 24% of girls 15-19 having been pregnant at least once. Gender based violence, deeply rooted traditional practices and the lack of comprehensive education on sexual and reproductive health, adolescent-friendly health services and economic opportunities all contribute to high early pregnancy rates.Project activities include (1) providing education and health services for sexual and reproductive health; (2) vocational training for pregnant adolescent girls and mothers; (3) protection for adolescent girl victims of sexual violence; (4) promoting healthy lifestyles and life skills for adolescents; (5) strengthening institutional capacities of four participating ministries, and (6) improving inter-institutional coordination between the Ministries. The Project is coordinated by the Ministry of the Family Adolescents and Children, jointly implemented with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Youth. Participation of these four ministries facilitates reaching a broad range of adolescents, parents, teachers and community leaders./To come

Policy research institutions a...nd the health SDGs: Open data platforms for citizen-led monitoring
more
|
Successful achievement of the ...17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and 169 targets will require the participation of citizens that use and rely on local public services. Citizens have a unique legitimacy and capacity to create a civic SDG movement that can monitor the implementation of SDG-relevant commitments. This pilot project, one of four pilots exploring the feasibility of a Think Heath Initiative, will focus on citizen-generated data for monitoring the attainment of the SDGs at the local level.CEGSS, a Guatemalan think tank, will work with citizens' groups, health authorities, and policymakers to adapt and field-test a web-based citizen-led open data monitoring system for the implementation of SDG goals and targets related to health governance (primarily Goal 3 and Goal 16) in Guatemala. The web platform will collect and display macro information on healthcare services coverage, local performance of public healthcare services, and the responsiveness of health authorities to rectifying issues. This exercise will provide the opportunity to raise awareness of the SGDs and the monitoring framework in more than 30 municipalities.CEGSS will also mentor institutions in India, Peru, and Mexico that are establishing similar web-based monitoring systems. This project will generate lessons about how well-placed think tanks are to support civic awareness and civic engagement in SDG implementation, and to facilitate citizen-generated data; how to integrate monitoring expectations from both authorities and citizens that use public services; the establishment of an open access monitoring system that uses ICT technologies and could be adopted in different countries; and the unique and important role that think tanks can play in amplifying or empowering civic SDG movements. The longer-term vision is one where multiple country-level digital platforms can be linked, thus creating regional digital platforms — or ideally, a single global digital platform — featuring citizen-generated local data for numerous low- and middle-income countries around the world. If proven feasible, work of this nature could be a feature of the new Think Health Initiative.

The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda.

This project seeks to improvin...g the health of women, adolescent girls, mothers, newborns and children in under-served areas taking a community-based approach and working with local health authorities. All project countries have established meaningful health legislation, governance bodies, and in some instances, the necessary infrastructure. Due to weak quality, inclusiveness (e.g. youth-friendliness), and gender-responsiveness of health services delivery and health care management, service delivery, operationalization and increased access and utilization of maternal newborn child health/sexual and reproductive health services (MNCH/SRH) require support. Specific challenges include: 1) weak health seeking behaviour by disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised women of child bearing age (WCBA) and their families; Particularly high MNCH/SRH risks exist for adolescent mothers and high rates of child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM); 3) WCBA's lack of decision-making capacity and low access to and control over social and economic assets due, to pervasive gender inequality; 4) inaccessible, fragmented and client-unfriendly health systems; 5) low numbers and inadequate skills of Community Health Workers and frontline workers to provide quality, gender responsive, adolescent friendly health care; and 6) irregular tracking and use of data by Ministry of Health, and poor accountability of health services to local communities.Project activities include: (1) raising awareness of local leaders, role models and various community groups on ongoing MNCH services, positive healthcare practices, including health care seeking behaviours; (2) training health care providers at both community and health facility levels on key MNCH interventions; (3) providing essential medicines and other medical supplies; (4) training health administrators and local health committees on planning, supervision and oversight of health resources and facilities; (5) training for health workers and drivers in referring patients requiring more advanced care at specialized facilities, including providing health facilities with mobile technology and vehicles to facilitate emergency transportation; (6) training and mentoring health care staff on improved data collection and reporting to inform local government resource planning; and, (7) implementing digital and media campaigns to raise awareness of Canadian public on global MNCH issues. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1 million women, more than 900,000 children under five years of age, and over 200,000 adolescent girls, as well as over 1.1 million men with improved MNCH services. An estimated 1.8 million individuals are expected to benefit from the initiative's results indirectly. In addition, activities targeting Canadian awareness of MNCH are expected to reach over 700,000 Canadians.Plan International Canada is implementing this project in partnership with Promundo and the Hospit

Linking Emerging Infectious Di...seases Research and Policy Networks in Southeast Asia and China: APEIR Phase II
more
|
The Asian Partnership on Emerg...ing Infectious Diseases Research (APEIR) is a multi-country, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research network that enables researchers and experts from several sectors, including agriculture and health, to explore joint research and policy questions in animal and public health. The partnership uses an ecohealth approach to address the complexity of emerging infectious diseases. This project presents a new phase of APEIR research on emerging threats from antimicrobial resistance and wildlife trade. It aims to strengthen the field of ecohealth and enhance emerging infectious disease control in Asia through research, capacity building, social and policy advocacy, and stronger knowledge and response networks. The wide use and abuse of antimicrobials as anti-infective drugs and non-therapeutic treatments are key contributors to persistent infections caused by resistance to antimicrobials. This use and abuse is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. In China and Southeast Asia, the lack of policy or regulation enforcements means that the use of antibiotics is not well-controlled. This research will provide evidence and guidance to develop country-specific and regional strategies to improve the responsible use of antibiotics and to reduce the emergence of resistant infectious agents in China, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Southeast Asia's thriving wildlife trade supports disease transmission to humans. It also threatens livestock, international trade, rural livelihoods, native wildlife populations, and ecosystem health. Little is known about the zoonotic disease risks involved in transmitting diseases between animals and humans. This study will assess the pathogens that circulate and will explore possible pathways of transmission to humans, specifically in China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It will help prevent emerging zoonotic infectious diseases. It will also decrease wildlife consumption, while educating people about the safe and wise use of wildlife as a source of food protein for poor people. Finally, it will support wildlife diversity and mitigate illegal wildlife trade in the region. Building on past research on avian influenza and ongoing knowledge-translation activities in the health field, this new phase of work will help APEIR build and support regional capacity to communicate and share knowledge to promptly address emerging infectious disease threats.

This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children. Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation. Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world.

STRENGTHENING EQUITY THROUGH A...PPLIED RESEARCH CAPACITY BUILDING IN E-HEALTH

|
Strengthening Equity through A...pplied Research Capacity Building in e-Health
more
|
There exists limited understan...ding of how e-Health solutions are perceived, designed, implemented and used. This goes beyond considerations related to automation, power supplies and affordability. Rather, it refers to context-specific, politically-aware and socially sensitive examination of how various ICTs are being appropriated, who is being included and excluded in the process, and whether the incorporation of ICTs is leading to more equitable health outcomes. The Strengthening Equity through Applied Research Capacity Building in e-Health (SEARCH) program will cultivate local research capacity to examine e-health and whether it leads to improved health equity and stronger health systems. Emphasis will be placed on methodological and analytical rigor, and policy dialogue. The first phase of SEARCH will involve scoping studies and workshops, with will elaborate the research agenda for the remainder of the program.

Scaling open data for developm...ent in Latin America
more
|
Latin America is the most uneq...ual region in the world and faces complex development challenges. Among these is the unprecedented number of corruption scandals in the region, which demonstrates the need to develop new approaches to foster accountability, transparency, and good governance. Moreover, the fact that many people lack access to public services, many of which are inefficient, confirms the pressing need to innovate in the way services are designed and delivered. The rise in urban population in Latin American and Caribbean countries also presents opportunities and challenges to foster more resilient cities. Finally, inclusion and empowerment of women in economic, social, and political realms remains a longstanding challenge for Latin Americans. Technology, particularly open data solutions, present innovative ways to address these challenges. IDRC's previous open data activity in the region demonstrates the important role evidence plays in this effort. In light of an increasingly dynamic open data ecosystem across the region, this new phase of research, the Latin America Open Data Initiative, will explore scaling the open data field in an inclusive and sustainable way with a view to reducing corruption, improving health service delivery, increasing resilience of cities, and reducing violence against women. The project, implemented in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States, will provide support to governments in the implementation of a regional agenda aimed at broader adoption of open data principles and stronger implementation of open data policies in Latin American countries. The initiative will assist at least three countries, as well as design and implement curricula on data analytics and visualization to be used by at least ten universities in the region. It will test appropriate data standards, guidelines, solution-driven applications, and demand-side capacity that contribute to scaling open data solutions. It will support and encourage open data leaders, particularly women, in government, civil society organizations, and the private sector to harness open data initiatives that meet development challenges. The project will also conduct research connecting the open data field with emerging issues and technologies, to contribute to social and economic development. In addition, the project will co-host the next Condatos conference in Costa Rica, thus playing a role in building the capacity of open data leaders in civil society and the public service in Central America.

Policy Research Institutions a...nd the Health SDGs: Scoping SDG governance arrangements across Latin America

This project is one of four pi...lots exploring the feasibility of a Think Heath Initiative: a prospective program that would support evidence-based policy engagement on the health-related SDGs. The project aims to energize Latin American participation in the international Think_SDG network, by supporting FioCruz's efforts to consolidate a Latin American network hub. The network hub, which first emerged during a consultation hosted by FioCruz, IDRC and the Graduate Institute in October 2016, will network and collaborate through a web-based platform that will be designed, hosted, and managed by FioCruz. The project also aims to produce two regional scoping studies exploring health and SDG governance in Latin America. The two scoping studies will promote stakeholder inclusion and engagement around health and the SDGs in Latin American whilst also informing the architectural design of the Think Health Initiative. For the first study, FioCruz will scope, describe, and compare the national-level institutional arrangements for SDG implementation and monitoring that are being created across South and Central American countries. It will focus, as a first step, on the twelve Latin American countries that have volunteered to present country SDG reports to this year's High Level Political Forum on the SDGs (July 2017). For the second study, FioCruz will document existing empirical experiences of intersectoral collaboration for health in Latin America. Both scoping studies will be published in peer-reviewed articles published in the Global Health Governance journal and BMJ journal, respectively.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR CRVS ...SYSTEMS ACTIVITY BUDGET LINE: OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT
more
|
Centre of Excellence for CRVS ...systems activity budget line: Outreach and engagement
more
|
Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events, including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. When integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. Such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Where global norms, standards, and tools exist, they are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information, including by developing an open-access electronic platform so that key resources will be readily accessible. It will facilitate exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the 'Every Woman Every Child' initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led Investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing. This project enables the Centre of Excellence to organize and/or participate in meetings and events that encourage targeted and continuous engagement with relevant global, regional, and country-level stakeholders. This will contribute to the development and evolution of the Centre of Excellence, and mobilize the community of practice to deliver key priorities that inform and advance CRVS globally. Stakeholder engagement and regular coordination will ensure that activities of the Centre of Excellence do not duplicate the work of existing entities, but rather build on what exists, support ongoing initiatives, and add value to efforts aimed at strengthening CRVS systems in countries eligible for Global Financing Facility financing. The project will also facilitate multi-sectoral engagement and build momentum to ensure that CRVS systems are foundational to health information systems.

This pilot project is one of f...our pilots exploring the feasibility of a Think Heath Initiative, a prospective program that would support evidence-based policy engagement on the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project will undertake seven national SDG scoping studies, one for each of Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Each national study will describe official SDG governance arrangements, stakeholder involvement, citizen engagement, national discourse and goals around gender, and multisectoral collaboration with relation to the SDGs. Each will analyze the presence or absence of civil society engagement and local community-level engagement in the SDGs in the countries, and will offer insights into best practices for civic engagement, as well as suggest practical means of increasing civic engagement where it is lacking. Based on the national studies, a regional analysis will also be generated and published in the Global Health Governance journal. The project will promote stakeholder inclusion and engagement around health and the SDGs, including through the evolution of the Think_SDG network, whilst also informing the architectural design of the Think Health Initiative.

|

Bridging the Know-do Gap Among... Healthcare Workers and Decision-makers Through Improved Routine Measurement of the Quality of Maternal and Newborn Care
more
|
Progress in Maternal, Newborn ...and Child Health (MNCH) outcomes in low-income countries has been slow. In Tanzania, recent data suggest that although significant progress has been made in increasing coverage of essential services, the paucity of data on quality of care is a major impediment to the achievement of the desired progress in MNCH outcomes.Through the proposed synergy project, the researchers will build on insights gained from their ongoing IMCHA project (#108020) to develop and validate a novel electronic tool for measuring the quality of maternal and newborn care. They will integrate the tool into the existing Health Management Information System (HMIS) in Tanzania, generate evidence on how a gender and equity perspective can be integrated in the routine assessment of quality of care, and identify the critical factors required for the scale-up and integration of the electronic tool into routine use. This project will build on the existing partnership between Ifakara Health Institute (Tanzania), Sick kids Centre for Global Health (Canada) and the Tanzania Ministry of Health. The proposed project is closely aligned with several Tanzania government led strategies to improve maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes, including the Big Results Now (BRN) initiative. The project is also closely aligned with the Government of Canada's feminist international assistance policy , the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for women, children and adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development. It is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative (2014-2020), a CAD 36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.
