STRENGTHENING THE ETHICS OF CL...INICAL RESEARCH FOR PARTICIPANTS IN EBOLA AFFECTED COUNTRIES
more
|
Strengthening the ethics of cl...inical research for participants in Ebola affected countries
more
|
As confirmed by the WHO's guid...elines on risk communication and community engagement issued for the 2018 Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), research is a critical component to both outbreak control measures and future preparedness activities. However, many of the adults recruited to these future studies have limited literacy and no prior exposure to the concept of research. These vulnerabilities are heightened during a public health emergency, particularly when the local context is rife with fear, confusion, and misinformation, and when international standards of research ethics are not always upheld. Heavily informed by the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, this project aims to support the ethical conduct of research in Ebola-affected countries. A multidisciplinary team of Canadian and African researchers will work with researchers, ethicists, Ebola survivor groups, and civil society leaders to characterize the key considerations and tested approaches for clear research communications with limited-literacy adults in sub-Saharan Africa. The team will then develop and pilot a toolbox of open-access and multilingual resources for the individuals and communities approached to participate in research. This ethics primer toolbox will be developed using a participatory research approach through community consultations and community piloting of resources and prototypes, and will be shared with an extensive network of project partners in academia, civil society, and patient advocacy groups, along with ethics oversight bodies in the DRC, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. This project is funded by the Rapid Research Fund for Ebola Virus Disease Outbreaks, a CA$1.5 million initiative that was mobilized and co-funded by IDRC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The Fund supports four collaborative projects jointly led by Canadian and African researchers.

The Americas is home to divers...e ecosystems that are vulnerable to increasing stress from environmental change, including changing climate, rapid urbanization, air and water pollution, and intensified agriculture and natural resources use. These stresses have direct impacts on the health and well-being of populations across the region. These are multi-faceted issues that are often only understood in the effort to solve or mitigate them. Ecosystems approaches to health provide a means to better understand multiple links between health and the environment. These approaches include more integrated and effective responses which promote collaboration guided by evidence. This project will leverage the best of ecohealth approaches in Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This partnership aims to improve methods and means to influence and guide inter-sector policies and practices which contribute to healthy, just, and ecologically sustainable societies. The project team will develop and implement a Pan-American research and capacity-building program over a four-year period. The program will include training awards, intensive summer schools, professional development workshops, research fellowships, and multistakeholder dialogue sessions. The project will increase the interest and ability of policymakers, practitioners, and researchers to put into practice multi-sector responses for improving human health and ecosystem resilience (the ecosystem's ability to resist damage and to recover quickly). The partnership will help strengthen and embed ecosystem approaches to health in the Americas. It will also build sustainable communities of practice and reinforce their alliances with other groups and institutions.

Centre of Excellence for Civil... Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems

|
Registration of events, such a...s birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce, is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. These statistics provide policymakers and practitioners with the necessary evidence to design interventions and enact appropriate policies on maternal and child health. Many low- and middle-income countries, however, do not systematically collect such crucial information. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. In many cases, global norms, standards, tools, and good practices are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. The project will establish the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems to provide information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and based at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and share information and resources in an open and collaborative electronic platform. It will also assist countries needing more direct support by facilitating the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility.

Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events - including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce - is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. However, such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Although global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible to, and useable by, those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information by developing an open-access, electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility. The communications component of the project will allow the Centre of Excellence to carry out strategic communications and knowledge sharing activities that will help support its vision to be a globally recognized go-to place for resources and expertise for the development of evidence-based, effective, and integrated CRVS systems and operations. Communication activities will ensure broad dissemination and use of products collected, supported, and produced by the Centre of Excellence. Details will be elaborated in a Communications Strategy.

This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to build a knowledge base by mapping and consolidating existing (yet scattered) evidence, as well as developing state-of-the art tools, resources, and synthesis products on CRVS systems for use by countries and other CRVS stakeholders. This includes commissioning case studies to document the various processes that countries are undertaking to develop and integrate CRVS systems components into investment cases. The Centre of Excellence will also actively collect and synthesize lessons and good practices to strengthen CRVS systems.

It will facilitate exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility.

Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events, such as birth, death, causes of death, marriage and divorce, is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Where global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration of Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information, including by developing an open-access electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing. This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to organize workshops, capacity-building events, seminars, conferences, and roundtables that bring together global and regional experts and stakeholders with a view to advancing the development and implementation of CRVS systems. It will support the organization of events (e.g. venues, logistics, etc.), participant attendance (e.g. airfare, accommodation, per diems, and incidentals for practitioners, experts, and institutions) from countries that are developing investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing, as well as from regional and/or global organizations where appropriate. Activities will serve to improve coordination and cooperation among global, regional, and country-level stakeholders, in addition to facilitating knowledge-sharing and best practices within and across regions.

The project will also allow the Centre of Excellence to contract expert advice and accompaniment, convene and/or participate in stakeholder meetings, as well as undertake CRVS systems gap analysis and priority setting analysis. In addition to facilitating access to technical expertise, the RSP will enable specific training for country representatives working to develop and/or implement their CRVS systems plans and it will structure peer learning opportunities to address specific gaps at the country level. The Centre of Excellence will also support locally based institutions in countries eligible for financing from the Global Financing Facility to ensure in-country CRVS systems expertise for sustainability.

Support to Canadian Conference... on Global Health 2017, 2018, and 2019
more
|
IDRC's Maternal and Child Heal...th (MCH) program has supported the annual Canadian Conference on Global Health (CCGH) every year for more than ten years. Now in its 23rd consecutive year, the CCGH is the major global health conference in Canada. It focuses entirely on global health, is peer-reviewed, and is the primary space for Canadians working in global health to connect with each other and with stakeholders on an annual basis. The conference is a mix of plenary, workshops, oral and poster presentations, and it aims for a balance between theory and practice. It engages healthcare practitioners, researchers, academics, educators, policymakers, and community advocates from both formal and informal systems of care. Given the particular audience that attends these conferences, it is the ideal location to showcase IDRC and MCH's contributions to Canadian global health priorities. This grant to the Canadian Society of International Health will bring delegates from low and middle-income countries to the conference and will ensure that IDRC has the flexibility to organize specific panels and side events. Being a sponsor confers these privileges as well as the opportunity to provide program and theme input, to have a booth, and to be featured in promotional materials. The 2017 conference will be held in Ottawa from October 29–31. The theme, congruent with and inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals, is Leaving no one behind: Reflection for action in a changing world. The 2018 conference will be in Toronto and the theme is currently undecided. No specific details are yet known about the location or theme of the 2019 conference. The 2017 conference will be partially funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program, a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

RESEARCH DISSEMINATION AT THE ...WORLD CONFERENCE ON TOBACCO OR HEALTH 2018
more
|
Research Dissemination at the ...World Conference on Tobacco or Health 2018
more

Tobacco use remains a leading ...contributor to the rising burden of non-communicable diseases globally, and specifically in low and middle-income countries. IDRC's Food, Environment, and Health (FEH) program aims to support research that will enable countries to implement the most effective tobacco control measures to dramatically reduce tobacco use among poor populations. One mechanism through which this can be achieved is supporting international events that pursue a similar objective, such as the World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCOTH). The WCTOH is the world's premiere international tobacco control event. It is held every three years and brings researchers, academics, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and public officials from around the world together to work on all aspects of tobacco control. The 17th edition of the conference, with the theme Uniting the World for a Tobacco Free Generation , will be held in March 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa. The conference is an opportunity to engage tobacco control researchers at appropriate fora where new knowledge can be exchanged; where researchers, research users, and international agencies can explore new partnership opportunities; and where the FEH program can access important information for program planning. This project will provide funding support to the Conference Secretariat hosted at the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. The grant will support the organization of the conference, as well as providing travel support to at least ten FEH grant recipients to attend and disseminate their work at the conference. Selection criteria will be based on acceptance of papers for oral presentation or poster presentations.???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The Canadian Institutes of Hea...lth Research (CIHR) and IDRC will co-host a series of four pan-Canadian meetings that aim to inform and refresh Canada's priorities in global health research. The consultations will engage scientists from academia, civil society, and government from across the country to discuss and develop a vision for global health research and Canada's added-value contributions to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The consultation process will guide future partnerships and possible investments in global health research, and the targeting of strategy for greatest impact. At CIHR, the joint initiative is being led by the Scientific Director of the Institute for Population and Public Health, in collaboration with several other Institutes. At IDRC, three programs will co-lead Centre contributions: Maternal and Child Health; Food, Environment, and Health; and Foundations for Innovation. IDRC will host the final session of the series (Future of Global Health). This research support project will cover the logistical expenses for the fourth and largest event in May 2018. The event will bring more than 50 participants to Ottawa to discuss the best opportunities for Canadian science to contribute globally to the prevention, treatment, and care of diseases and the promotion of health.

IDRC participates as a paralle...l funder in a US-Canada partnership for environmental and occupational health research with the US National Institutes of Health, led by the Fogarty International Centre. Regional hubs of the Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) network are led by research organizations in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Peru, Suriname, and Thailand. This project covers local in-house expenses of hosting the third annual network meeting of the GEOHealth network in August 2018. The goal of this meeting is to provide a forum for GEOHealth principal investigators and trainees to share and discuss activities, accomplishments, and challenges in GEOHealth research, research training, and hub development. This event will be held immediately before the Joint Annual Meeting of the International Society of Exposure Science and the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology in Ottawa. More than 50 members are expected to attend both the annual network meeting at IDRC and the joint conference, including project co-leaders and young researchers associated with the GEOHealth hubs in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the US, and Canada.

Outreach, communications and k...nowledge translation fund for promoting maternal, adolescent and child health research
more
|
The health of women, children,... and adolescents is a key development priority of the Canadian government and part of the global Sustainable Development Goals. In alignment with these global priorities, IDRC's Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program supports a rich portfolio of implementation research projects that work towards improving the quality, accessibility, and accountability of health services in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a focus on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and health information systems. MCH's approach has been to support LMIC researchers, policymakers, and implementers to influence national, regional, and global agendas through strategic meetings, dialogues, and by disseminating and using research results. The 2019-2020 financial year holds several crucial engagements where MCH and MCH-supported researchers can and should maximize opportunities to disseminate research findings, share thought leadership perspectives, and support emerging young researchers. This project aims to communicate the strategic priorities and contributions of the MCH program and to disseminate the research results of supported projects to produce greater visibility and reach for impact. A range of outreach opportunities and communication products will be developed through this fund to disseminate research results and to enable the strategic involvement of IDRC grantees in key events and conferences (e.g. Women Deliver) to promote knowledge exchange and to influence policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities. Funds will also support strategic planning pieces. Collectively, the intent is to leverage appropriate opportunities that enable the mobilization of knowledge into policy processes.

The project aims to improve hu...man development outcomes in Africa and Asia through four components: (i) strengthening health systems in Central Asia to ensure that people have access to quality health care and information provided by qualified staff in well-equipped facilities; (ii) strengthening education systems in eastern Africa to improve the quality of education for students at the pre-primary and primary school levels; (iii) improving the ability of civil society organizations in Africa and Asia to promote gender equality, integrate climate change adaptation in their programming, and develop innovative means of helping people improve their livelihoods; and (iv) helping Canadians become more aware of and involved in international development. The project supports a regional approach to strengthening health and education systems by engaging partner agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in Africa and Asia.
