Improving Community Health and...

This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.

|
This project aims to register ...and issue birth certificates to 3.5 million girls and boys under the age of five (including 90% of newborns and 70% of previously unregistered children) in ten regions of mainland Tanzania. Accurate birth registration allows the Government of Tanzania to effectively and efficiently plan for health, education, and child protection services and ensure that children have access to these services. The project supports the scaling up of an innovative birth registration system, which was developed by Tanzania's birth registration agency in partnership with Tigo (a mobile service provider). The system uses innovative technology that quickly uploads records of all birth registrations to a centralized system through text messages sent from mobile phones. This allows for real-time monitoring of birth registrations at national, regional and local levels and greatly simplifies the registration process. Some project activities include: (1) training local government registration agents, specifically health workers and Ward Executive Officers; (2) entering into a public-private partnership with key mobile service providers operating in the ten regions; (3) conducting public awareness campaigns to support the implementation of the new birth registration system in each region; (4) assisting the Government of Tanzania to finalize the new Birth and Death Registration law; (5) coordinating an inter-ministerial committee on civil registration and vital statistics; and (6) training a core team of national facilitators to scale up the new birth registration system across mainland Tanzania.

The project focuses on the del...ivery of multiple and complementary interventions to support and build up the infrastructure, training, and sustainability of essential health services particularly relating to maternal and child health at the level of multiple rural communities across Benin and Togo. The project comprises a concentric health clinic model seeking to improve: (i) access to clean water, (ii) training in healthy practices and gender equality, and (iii) maternal, newbord and child health (MNCH) across nutrition, clinical prevention and disease management domains. The beneficiaries are mothers, pregnant women, newborns and children under five. Other direct beneficiaries include clinic workers equipped and trained, other women villagers involved in leadership opportunities, and all villagers through equitable access to an environmentally sustained clean water source and training in healthy practices. GAIN Canada works closely alongside GAIN Bénin, GAIN Togo, Alliance de santé communautaire Canada Bénin (ASCCB) and Vision, initiative et engagement pour la santé (VIES) in order to implement this project.

IMPROVING DATA QUALITY FOR HEA...LTH RESEARCH AT LACOR HOSPITAL

|
Improving data quality for hea...lth research at Lacor Hospital
more
|
Uganda's northern region is be...lieved to severely lag behind most of the country in key health indicators such as maternal and child mortality. One reason for this is the lack of a responsive public health system. Lacor Hospital has for the past few decades filled this gap by becoming the primary provider of health care and serving as the first line of response to health challenges in the region. However, without the benefits of the knowledge and innovation that research in the region could yield, the hospital's ability to be responsive to the health needs of the people has been limited. The main objective of this project is to improve data and project management systems at Lacor Hospital to position it as a research platform where high-quality data is accessible to answer questions about the health of the catchment population. This project proposes a number of targeted improvements to the hospital's data and project management systems, including standardizing and digitizing the hospital's data collection and data entry processes in order to improve data quality; and training selected hospital staff in project management to improve how they manage research projects. If these changes are successful, it is hoped that the hospital will be in a stronger position to attract local and international partners to invest in conducting high quality health research in this neglected post-conflict region of the world.

How can a gender lens enhance ...maternal and child health social enterprises in Africa? (IMCHA)
more
|
Research shows that high gende...r inequity translates into poor health for mothers, pregnant women, and children. At the community and individual level, gender inequities and disparities can underlie dimensions of poverty among women. Low socioeconomic status can be associated with high fertility rates, low educational attainment, higher burden of disease, and HIV/AIDS. Gender inequities and disparities also affect access to healthcare services for women and children, particularly in fragile contexts.Social enterprise-based models have great potential to improve maternal and child health (MCH) services and they can also be used to provide an improved source of income for women. A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, such as a cooperative or a community organization. An initial study of social enterprise approaches to MCH care in Africa identified two primary social enterprise models: one based on primary health clinics and one based on mobile community health promoters and sales agents. Gender dynamics played an important role between women and healthcare providers, healthcare providers and social enterprises, and social enterprises and their impact on the individual or community. However, these relationships have not been adequately explored in relation to their impact on maternal and child healthcare services and related outcomes for women and children. The aim of this project, implemented by BRAC Africa, is to improve the understanding of how gender and the social enterprise approach can improve access to maternal and child health services and to outcomes across Africa and globally. The research methodology will include: a systematic literature review and mapping on gender equality, maternal and child health, and social enterprise; a survey to provide basic insight and foundational knowledge into structures and practices; and gender analysis involving both primary and secondary research using key informant interviews and focus group discussions. This will build on an existing IMCHA projects in partnership with BRAC Africa in order to expand the knowledge base about gender equality and social enterprises targeted at improving maternal and child health outcomes as well as identifying practical lessons and promising strategies. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project aims to work, ove...r a four year period, in collaboration with local governments in Nepal and Vietnam to make necessary health services and interventions accessible to children less than two years of age and to their mothers. Research has identified that the first 1,000 days of a child's life are critical for intellectual and physical development and lifelong health. Nepal and Vietnam have both made significant strides in reducing infant and maternal mortality and improving access to essential health care. However, inequality in terms of mortality and access to services between different regions and ethnic groups remains a challenge in both of these countries. This project will address this inequality by improving the health care systems of remote regions (Banke district in Nepal) and ethnic minorities in the two countries (the Thai, H'Mong, Xinh Mun, Kho Mu and Khang of Vietnam).Project activities include: (1) improving health management capacity; (2) improving delivery of and access to quality health care and nutrition services; (3) promoting care-seeking; (4) improving nutrition; (5) engaging men and family members to reduce gender-related barriers; (6) providing capacity building to health management teams and health workers directly; (7) engaging and offering education to men and key family members on the importance of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and how they can support the health of women and children; and (8) increasing the awareness of Canadians in MNCH issues through public engagement initiatives. The project reach is a total of 38,418 direct beneficiaries in Nepal (18,056 women, 16,671 men and 3,691 women) and 20,611 in Vietnam (10,001 women, 9,172 men and 1,438 children). An additional 9,200 Canadians are reached through a public engagement component. This project is implemented in collaboration with the following HealthBridge Foundation of Canada local partners: The International Nepal Fellowship (INF) in Nepal who is implementing the project in the Banke district, located in the Mid-Western region and the Centre for Creative Initiatives for Health and Population (CCIHP) in Lai Chau province in the remote, mountainous North-West region of Vietnam.

This project is a component of... the Caribbean Disaster Risk Management Program, which seeks to increase the capacity of regional organizations, national governments and local communities in the Caribbean to respond to and manage natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods and to reduce their impact on the people of the region.Specifically, this project aims to reduce the medical impact that natural disasters and other emergencies can inflict on the people of the region. The project is managed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Working with national Ministries of Health, hospitals, clinics and national disaster offices PAHO's medical team uses its expertise to enhance the technical capacity of health sector practitioners to prepare for disasters, while providing them with new tools and technologies.

There exists limited understan...ding of how e-Health solutions are perceived, designed, implemented and used. This goes beyond considerations related to automation, power supplies and affordability. Rather, it refers to context-specific, politically-aware and socially sensitive examination of how various ICTs are being appropriated, who is being included and excluded in the process, and whether the incorporation of ICTs is leading to more equitable health outcomes. The Strengthening Equity through Applied Research Capacity Building in e-Health (SEARCH) program will cultivate local research capacity to examine e-health and whether it leads to improved health equity and stronger health systems. Emphasis will be placed on methodological and analytical rigor, and policy dialogue. The first phase of SEARCH will involve scoping studies and workshops, with will elaborate the research agenda for the remainder of the program.

This project aims to develop, ...implement and refine tools and approaches to strengthen country monitoring and reporting in MNCH and nutrition. The purpose of the Real Accountability: Data Analysis for Results (RADAR) project is for the Institute for International Programs of Johns Hopkins University to work with Canadian institutions and organizations, in-country evaluation partners, governments and development partners in a subset of countries where Canada has maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) programming. Project activities include: (1) support CAN-MNCH in the training of a cadre of Canadian technical experts that are available to assist in implementing the MNCH results tools in DFATD programs with MNCH programming, (2) support the design of an external, Canadian-based, data repository to ensure data quality, comparability and availability in order to generate regular results reports, (3) assist in the implementation of these tools in a select number of Canada's MNCH countries in order to validate results, refine the methodologies and ensure proper implementation. The ultimate beneficiaries for this project are mothers and children, as this initiative will develop tools to assess the quality of care provided to mothers and children, in the areas of nutrition and newborn health programs.

The initiative aims to address... several development needs and challenges all linked to underlying poverty and lack of basic services in the remote rural areas in the Ramechap district in Nepal, in the Azabache and Nacaome areas in Honduras and in the Gourma province in Burkina Faso. The overall objective of the initiative is to improve the health of mothers and young children, and thus contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality, through assistance with village and household-scale infrastructure, parent health education and enhanced nutrition and food security. World Neighbours Canada aims to develop and implement training programs for women and men to learn about family planning options, to increase food crop production using sustainable and ecologically sound practices, to promote proper nutrition in infants and young children under two years of age that includes breast feeding promotion, developing and implementing water system plans with participation of users etc. The project proposes to benefit more than 50,000 women, men, girls and boys.World Neigbours Canada is working with Tamakoshi Sewa Samiti (TSS) in Nepal, L'Association d'Appui à la Promotion du Développement Durable des Communautés (APDC) in Burkina Faso, and Vecinos Honduras, in Honduras to implement this project.
