This volunteer cooperation pro...gram supports approximately 1,125 volunteer advisor assignments. The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries; (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers; and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda. / Le projet contribuera à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. Dans les zones cibles dans chaque pays il y a un faible niveau de connaissance sur la prévention, les retards dans la recherche de traitement précoce, les pratiques d'hygiène et d'assainissement médiocres, les pratiques culturelles traditionnelles, et les inégalités entre les sexes. The Asian Partnership on Emerg...ing Infectious Diseases Research (APEIR) is a multi-country, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research network that enables researchers and experts from several sectors, including agriculture and health, to explore joint research and policy questions in animal and public health. The partnership uses an ecohealth approach to address the complexity of emerging infectious diseases. This project presents a new phase of APEIR research on emerging threats from antimicrobial resistance and wildlife trade. It aims to strengthen the field of ecohealth and enhance emerging infectious disease control in Asia through research, capacity building, social and policy advocacy, and stronger knowledge and response networks. The wide use and abuse of antimicrobials as anti-infective drugs and non-therapeutic treatments are key contributors to persistent infections caused by resistance to antimicrobials. This use and abuse is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. In China and Southeast Asia, the lack of policy or regulation enforcements means that the use of antibiotics is not well-controlled. This research will provide evidence and guidance to develop country-specific and regional strategies to improve the responsible use of antibiotics and to reduce the emergence of resistant infectious agents in China, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Southeast Asia's thriving wildlife trade supports disease transmission to humans. It also threatens livestock, international trade, rural livelihoods, native wildlife populations, and ecosystem health. Little is known about the zoonotic disease risks involved in transmitting diseases between animals and humans. This study will assess the pathogens that circulate and will explore possible pathways of transmission to humans, specifically in China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It will help prevent emerging zoonotic infectious diseases. It will also decrease wildlife consumption, while educating people about the safe and wise use of wildlife as a source of food protein for poor people. Finally, it will support wildlife diversity and mitigate illegal wildlife trade in the region. Building on past research on avian influenza and ongoing knowledge-translation activities in the health field, this new phase of work will help APEIR build and support regional capacity to communicate and share knowledge to promptly address emerging infectious disease threats.

The wide use and abuse of antimicrobials as anti-infective drugs and non-therapeutic treatments are key contributors to persistent infections caused by resistance to antimicrobials. This use and abuse is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. In China and Southeast Asia, the lack of policy or regulation enforcements means that the use of antibiotics is not well-controlled. This research will provide evidence and guidance to develop country-specific and regional strategies to improve the responsible use of antibiotics and to reduce the emergence of resistant infectious agents in China, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Southeast Asia's thriving wildlife trade supports disease transmission to humans. It also threatens livestock, international trade, rural livelihoods, native wildlife populations, and ecosystem health. Little is known about the zoonotic disease risks involved in transmitting diseases between animals and humans. This study will assess the pathogens that circulate and will explore possible pathways of transmission to humans, specifically in China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It will help prevent emerging zoonotic infectious diseases. It will also decrease wildlife consumption, while educating people about the safe and wise use of wildlife as a source of food protein for poor people. Finally, it will support wildlife diversity and mitigate illegal wildlife trade in the region. The Asian Partnership on Emerg...ing Infectious Diseases Research (APEIR) is a multi-country, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research network that enables researchers and experts from several sectors, including agriculture and health, to explore joint research and policy questions in animal and public health. The partnership uses an ecohealth approach to address the complexity of emerging infectious diseases. This project presents a new phase of APEIR research on emerging threats from antimicrobial resistance and wildlife trade. It aims to strengthen the field of ecohealth and enhance emerging infectious disease control in Asia through research, capacity building, social and policy advocacy, and stronger knowledge and response networks. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. In many cases, global norms, standards, tools, and good practices are not readily accessible and useable to those who need them most.The project will establish the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems to provide information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and based at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and share information and resources in an open and collaborative electronic platform. Systematic registration of vit...al and civil events - including birth, death, causes of death, marriage, and divorce - is critical for improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health. Integrated into existing health information systems, these statistics become valuable evidence, giving policymakers and practitioners the knowledge they need to review the circumstances leading to each maternal and child death, identify preventable factors, and take action where needed. However, such crucial information systems are lacking in many countries. It is estimated that one-third of the world's births and two-thirds of the world's deaths are not registered or are incorrectly certified. Although global norms, standards, tools, and promising practices exist, they are not readily accessible to, and useable by, those who need them most. Funded by Global Affairs Canada and IDRC, and housed at IDRC, the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems will link knowledge seekers with information, tools, and expertise to facilitate the development and implementation of integrated CRVS systems. The Centre of Excellence will coordinate with existing expert groups to generate, consolidate, and disseminate information by developing an open-access, electronic platform to make key resources readily accessible. It will facilitate the exchange of good practices and capacity strengthening, and will play an important role in brokering technical assistance for countries needing more direct support. The Centre of Excellence will work closely with the Global Financing Facility in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative to enable the development and implementation of CRVS systems plans as part of country-led investment cases for financing by the Global Financing Facility. The communications component of the project will allow the Centre of Excellence to carry out strategic communications and knowledge sharing activities that will help support its vision to be a globally recognized go-to place for resources and expertise for the development of evidence-based, effective, and integrated CRVS systems and operations. Communication activities will ensure broad dissemination and use of products collected, supported, and produced by the Centre of Excellence. Details will be elaborated in a Communications Strategy.

This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to build a knowledge base by mapping and consolidating existing (yet scattered) evidence, as well as developing state-of-the art tools, resources, and synthesis products on CRVS systems for use by countries and other CRVS stakeholders. This includes commissioning case studies to document the various processes that countries are undertaking to develop and integrate CRVS systems components into investment cases. The Centre of Excellence will also actively collect and synthesize lessons and good practices to strengthen CRVS systems.

This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to organize workshops, capacity-building events, seminars, conferences, and roundtables that bring together global and regional experts and stakeholders with a view to advancing the development and implementation of CRVS systems. It will support the organization of events (e.g. venues, logistics, etc.), participant attendance (e.g. airfare, accommodation, per diems, and incidentals for practitioners, experts, and institutions) from countries that are developing investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing, as well as from regional and/or global organizations where appropriate. Activities will serve to improve coordination and cooperation among global, regional, and country-level stakeholders, in addition to facilitating knowledge-sharing and best practices within and across regions.

This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to support countries in accessing the technical expertise they need to develop and implement effective CRVS systems. This includes developing and maintaining a roster of experts for the Centre of Excellence and CRVS stakeholders at the country level to draw on as appropriate. The project will also allow the Centre of Excellence to contract expert advice and accompaniment, convene and/or participate in stakeholder meetings, as well as undertake CRVS systems gap analysis and priority setting analysis. In addition to facilitating access to technical expertise, the RSP will enable specific training for country representatives working to develop and/or implement their CRVS systems plans and it will structure peer learning opportunities to address specific gaps at the country level. The Centre of Excellence will also support locally based institutions in countries eligible for financing from the Global Financing Facility to ensure in-country CRVS systems expertise for sustainability.

Equity in health is a pressing... global concern. Disparities in health status and access to health care within and across countries are both a cause and a consequence of social inequality. Access to health services continues to be largely determined by socioeconomic factors, and financial protection against catastrophic health costs remains inadequate. It is crucial to find evidence-based, and locally-produced and owned solutions, to address the issue of equity in health.Three IDRC-sponsored regional networks are separately investigating inequities in health, health financing and health delivery. The networks are: Strategies for Health Insurance for Equity in Less Developed Countries - SHIELD (103457), Equity in Asia-Pacific Health Systems - EQUITAP (105231), and the Latin American Research Network on Financial Protection (LANET), for Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, respectively.This grant will allow the three networks to cooperate through a series of opportunities for capacity building, exchange, and cross-regional comparative and collaborative work. Such work is expected to enhance the evidence base and dissemination of research results for informed policy design.

The West Africa Initiative to ...Strengthen Capacities through Health Systems Research

West Africa has many of the lo...west development indicators in the world - 10 of the 15 member states of the West African Community number among the world's 35 low-income countries. The World Health Organization reports that 14 of the member states have a high maternal mortality ratio, defined as 300 or more maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. These dismal statistics tell the story of a region facing dysfunctional health and social services with a limited capacity to conduct research that informs sound health policies and practices. Of the health research that is undertaken in the region, much is done in isolation, and findings are not shared or disseminated across governments or health systems. The result: synergies across findings are not made and links between researchers and decision-makers are often weak. This project sets the foundation for producing and using rigorous and relevant evidence to strengthen equitable and sustainable health systems in West Africa. Four teams will be funded through a call for proposals focusing on research on how to strengthen health systems in West Africa. A group of leaders with regional expertise will be mobilized and supported to advise on the call and guide the overall project. The project will also help the West African Health Organisation, a respected stakeholder and the mandated body coordinating efforts to improve health in the region, promote interest in the call and encourage the use of research findings by ministers of health from member countries. Research results will be disseminated through a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal, policy briefs, and articles to further inform health policy and practice in West Africa.

The communications component of the project will allow the Centre of Excellence to carry out strategic communications and knowledge sharing activities that will help support its vision to be a globally recognized go-to place for resources and expertise for the development of evidence-based, effective, and integrated CRVS systems and operations. Communication activities will ensure broad dissemination and use of products collected, supported, and produced by the Centre of Excellence. Details will be elaborated in a Communications Strategy.

This includes commissioning case studies to document the various processes that countries are undertaking to develop and integrate CRVS systems components into investment cases. The Centre of Excellence will also actively collect and synthesize lessons and good practices to strengthen CRVS systems.

It will support the organization of events (e.g. venues, logistics, etc.), participant attendance (e.g. airfare, accommodation, per diems, and incidentals for practitioners, experts, and institutions) from countries that are developing investment cases for Global Financing Facility financing, as well as from regional and/or global organizations where appropriate. Activities will serve to improve coordination and cooperation among global, regional, and country-level stakeholders, in addition to facilitating knowledge-sharing and best practices within and across regions.

This project will allow the Centre of Excellence to support countries in accessing the technical expertise they need to develop and implement effective CRVS systems. This includes developing and maintaining a roster of experts for the Centre of Excellence and CRVS stakeholders at the country level to draw on as appropriate. The project will also allow the Centre of Excellence to contract expert advice and accompaniment, convene and/or participate in stakeholder meetings, as well as undertake CRVS systems gap analysis and priority setting analysis. In addition to facilitating access to technical expertise, the RSP will enable specific training for country representatives working to develop and/or implement their CRVS systems plans and it will structure peer learning opportunities to address specific gaps at the country level. The Centre of Excellence will also support locally based institutions in countries eligible for financing from the Global Financing Facility to ensure in-country CRVS systems expertise for sustainability.

The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation offers 40 Canadian interns internships in nine countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda. The internships focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and capacity-building. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation offers 40 Canadian interns internships in nine countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda. The internships focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and capacity-building. Interns assist in preparing educational and communications materials, facilitating and designing workshops, organizing events and managing projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le Conseil atlantique pour la coopération internationale permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans neuf pays, soit au Bhutan, en Bolivie, en Gambie, au Ghana, en Haiti, en Jamaique, en Afrique du Sud, au Kenya et en Ouganda. Les stages visent à augmenter la sécurité alimentaire, à stimuler la croissance économique de manière durable et à renforcer les capacités. Les stagiaires appuient la préparation de matériel éducatif et de communication, conçoivent et animent des ateliers, organisent des événements et gèrent des projets.

This project aims to implement... a global advocacy initiative to highlight and prioritize girls' and women's health, rights and wellbeing, with a particular focus on maternal, newborn and adolescent health, nutrition and family planning. Project activities include support to: (1) organizing the Girl Power in Play Symposium (Ottawa, June 18-19, 2015); (2) organizing the 2016 Women Deliver Conference, which is the world's largest global convening to focus on the health, rights and well-being of girls and women; and (3) organizing a thematic meeting on nutrition and 4) country-level consultations on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This project supports a global... health forum that focuses on exploring research topics to improve the health and well-being of children and youth in developing countries. The Forum, organized by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), will take place on November 17-19, 2016 in London, United Kingdom. CIFAR is convening a group of leading global experts including researchers, donors, private sector representatives and knowledge users to explore current challenges and identify gaps in research knowledge to improve the health and well-being of children in the poorest and hardest to reach regions of the world. CIFAR was established in 1982 as an independent not-for-profit corporation that supports networks of Canadian and international researchers who conduct long-term research on scientific, social and economic issues. Its mission is to increase Canadian research capacity in areas of importance to Canada, and strengthen the Canadian research environment through the promotion of excellence and engagement with the international research community at universities and research institutes worldwide. CIFAR supports research programs in 14 areas, drawing upon close to 350 eminent researchers around the world. / Ce projet est à l'appui d'un forum de santé mondial axé sur l'exploration de thèmes de recherches visant à améliorer la santé et le bien-être des enfants dans les pays en développement. Le forum, organisé par l'Institut canadien de recherches avancées (ICRA), aura lieu du 17 au 19 novembre 2016 à Londres au Royaume-Uni. L'ICRA a convoqué un groupe d'experts mondiaux, y compris des chercheurs, donateurs, des représentants du secteur privé et des utilisateurs de connaissances dans le but d'explorer les défis actuels et d'identifier les lacunes en matière de recherche afin d'améliorer la santé et le bien-être des enfants dans les régions du monde les plus pauvres et les plus difficiles à rejoindre. L'ICRA a été fondé en 1982 en tant qu'institut d'études avancées privé sans but lucratif pour soutenir les réseaux de recherche canadien et international qui se penche sur des recherches à long-terme sur des problèmes d'ordre scientifique, social et économique. Sa mission est d'augmenter la capacité canadienne en matière de recherche sur des questions d'importance pour le Canada et de solidifier le milieu de la recherche canadienne à travers la promotion de l'excellence et de l'engagement auprès de la communauté de recherche internationale dans les universités et dans les instituts de recherche mondiales. The Symposium aims to build capacity in health in developing countries and the world by bringing together global health experts to share best practices and lessons learned to strengthen health systems. The theme for the 2016 Symposium is “Building Resilient and Responsive Health Systems for a Changing World.†The Symposium will consist of plenary sessions and seminars that will highlight innovative approaches to strengthening health systems using health systems research to generate evidence for decision-making, best practices and capacity building to inform health policies and programming. Other key issues of focus will include reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health, infectious diseases including Ebola and HIV/AIDs, determinants of health, health information systems, and aboriginal health. / Le projet appuie la 4e Colloque mondial sur les systèmes de recherche en santé, organisée par le Canada à Vancouver BC sur Novembre 14-18 2016. Le symposium vise à renforcer les capacités en matière de santé dans les pays en développement et le monde en réunissant des experts mondiaux de la santé de partager les meilleures pratiques et les leçons apprises pour renforcer les systèmes de santé. Le thème pour 2016 Symposium est la construction de systèmes sanitaires résistantes et sensibles pour un monde en mutation. Le Symposium comprendra des séances et séminaires plénières qui mettront en évidence les approches novatrices en matière de renforcement des systèmes de santé à l'aide de la recherche sur les systèmes de santé pour générer des données pour la prise de décision, les meilleures pratiques et le renforcement des capacités pour informer les politiques et programmes de santé.
