The project works to improve t...he quality and accessibility of maternal, newborn and child healthcare (MNCH) in recipient countries by enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of MNCH programming implemented by Canadian non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The Canadian Network for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, facilitates collaboration and coordination among more than 100 partner organizations working to improve the responsiveness of programming to evolving needs and circumstances by enhancing monitoring and reporting tools used by NGOs. The project also supports NGOs in sharing information, results, experience and expertise in order to enhance the overall effectiveness of programming and to better communicate a comprehensive picture of Canada's development programming in maternal, newborn and child health. Key activities of the Network include: (1) carrying out regular reviews of scientific evidence on maternal, newborn and child health and sharing that evidence with partner organizations; (2) providing peer support to partner organizations to adapt and implement internationally recognized guidelines for improving maternal, newborn, and child health; (3) identifying potential collaboration opportunities and sharing innovative practices among partner organizations; (4) developing, adapting, and promoting common measures and methods for tracking progress toward improving maternal, newborn and child health; and (5) providing partner organizations and other Canadian stakeholders with the most relevant and up-to-date information on maternal, newborn and child health and on current initiatives in developing countries. / Le projet travaille à améliorer la qualité et l'accessibilité aux soins de santé des mères, des nouveaux nés et des enfants (SMNE) dans les pays bénéficiaires en renforçant l' efficacité et l'efficience de la programmation SMNE mis en oeuvre par des organisations non gouvernementales canadiennes ( ONG). Le Réseau canadien sur la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants facilite la collaboration et la coordination entre plus de 100 organisations partenaires qui travaillent à améliorer l'adaptation de la programmation à l'évolution des besoins et des circonstances en améliorant la surveillance et les outils utilisés par les ONG de rapports. Le projet soutient également les ONG dans le partage de l'information, des résultats, de l'expérience et de l'expertise afin d'améliorer l'efficacité globale de la programmation et de mieux communiquer une image complète de la programmation du Canada en santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

The project aims to reinforce ...adult education and the use of sustainable agriculture in 52 rural communities in 8 departments of El Salvador and 43 rural communities in 4 departments of Honduras by the means of the following main activities: (1) providing agriculture extension services to youth, men and women in order to develop and diversify ecologically sustainable and diversify food production enterprises; (2) providing inputs and marketing assistance for these small family agriculture enterprises; (3) enhancing the agricultural knowledge of community members and partner organisation staff; (4) providing men, women and youth with certified adult education; (5) providing teacher-training workshops in adult education for regional facilitators and teachers; (6) providing young men and women with leadership training, and certified vocational skills training; (7) providing training to community members, technicians and masons in eco-stove building and maintenance; and (8) building eco stoves. The local partners in the project are the Centro nacional de trabajadores del campo (CNTC) in Honduras and the Asociación nacional de trabajadores agropecuarios (ANTA) in El Salvador. / Le projet vise à renforcer l'éducation des adultes et l'utilisation d'une agriculture durable dans 52 collectivités rurales dans 8 province du El Salvador et 43 collectivités rurales dans 4 provinces du Honduras à travers les principales activités suivantes : 1) offre de services de vulgarisation agricole aux jeunes, hommes et femmes afin de développer et de diversifier des entreprises de production alimentaire écologiquement durables; 2) octroi d'intrants et aide à la commercialisation à ces petites entreprises agricoles et familiales; 3) l'amélioration des connaissances agricoles des membres de la communauté et des employers de l'organisation partenaire; 4) dispension d' une éducation adulte certifiée aux hommes, femmes et jeunes; 5) ateliers de formation en éducation des adultes au profit des enseignants et des animateurs au niveau régional; 6) formation en leadership et formation professionnelle certifiée au profit de jeunes, hommes et femmes; 7) formation aux membres de la communauté, des techniciens et des maçons sur l'éco-construction et la maintenance; et 8) le renforcement des éco-fourneaux. Les partenaires locaux dans le projet sont le Centro nacional de trabajadores del campo (CNTC) au Honduras and l'Asociación nacional de trabajadores agropecuarios (ANTA) au El Salvador.

This volunteer cooperation pro...gram supports approximately 1,125 volunteer advisor assignments. The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries; (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers; and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project. / Ce programme de coopération volontaire appuie environ 1 125 affectations de conseillers volontaires. Le projet vise à : 1) améliorer le bien-être économique et social de collectivités dans les pays ciblés; 2) améliorer les compétences, les capacités et la collaboration des partenaires locaux au moyen du placement de volontaires qualifiés; 3) accroitre les connaissances, la prise de conscience et le réseautage des Canadiens (p. ex., diaspora, anciens, universités, société civile et secteur privé) pour encourager ces derniers à participer aux efforts de développement du Canada, au moyen de l'organisation d'activités de partage des connaissances dans l'ensemble du pays. Le projet comprend des fonds dédiés à l'innovation qui permettent d'appuyer la mise à l'essai et la mise en oeuvre à grande échelle de pratiques d'avant-garde. Cuso est l'organisation de coopération volontaire chef de file en ce qui a trait à la mobilisation de la diaspora, et elle mobilise des volontaires de la diaspora dans le cadre de ce projet.

This project supports a global... health forum that focuses on exploring research topics to improve the health and well-being of children and youth in developing countries. The Forum, organized by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), will take place on November 17-19, 2016 in London, United Kingdom. CIFAR is convening a group of leading global experts including researchers, donors, private sector representatives and knowledge users to explore current challenges and identify gaps in research knowledge to improve the health and well-being of children in the poorest and hardest to reach regions of the world. CIFAR was established in 1982 as an independent not-for-profit corporation that supports networks of Canadian and international researchers who conduct long-term research on scientific, social and economic issues. Its mission is to increase Canadian research capacity in areas of importance to Canada, and strengthen the Canadian research environment through the promotion of excellence and engagement with the international research community at universities and research institutes worldwide. CIFAR supports research programs in 14 areas, drawing upon close to 350 eminent researchers around the world. / Ce projet est à l'appui d'un forum de santé mondial axé sur l'exploration de thèmes de recherches visant à améliorer la santé et le bien-être des enfants dans les pays en développement. Le forum, organisé par l'Institut canadien de recherches avancées (ICRA), aura lieu du 17 au 19 novembre 2016 à Londres au Royaume-Uni. L'ICRA a convoqué un groupe d'experts mondiaux, y compris des chercheurs, donateurs, des représentants du secteur privé et des utilisateurs de connaissances dans le but d'explorer les défis actuels et d'identifier les lacunes en matière de recherche afin d'améliorer la santé et le bien-être des enfants dans les régions du monde les plus pauvres et les plus difficiles à rejoindre. The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda. / Le projet contribuera à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. This project is implemented in... 9 Districts of the Northern and Upper West Regions of Ghana. The goal is to contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity by making easily understandable maternal health information accessible to expectant and new mothers in an interactive setting, using Information Communications Technology (ICT). More than half of infant deaths in Ghana happen within the first month of life. A serious lack of health facilities and poor access to health services in northern Ghana contributes to the high regional maternal mortality rate. Activities are: 1) introduce an interactive charting process and other participatory approaches so that women have a voice in their own care; 2) mitigate both direct and indirect causes of maternal death, 3) address the poor general health of women, high-risk reproductive characteristics, and barriers to preventive health care and, 4) address newborn survival in rural, remote areas with targeted messages and interventions. Principal beneficiaries include 30,000 pregnant women and mothers and 30,000 partners and 15,000 infant girls and 15,000 infant boys. Salasan Consulting Inc. is working with a Canadian partner, Mustimuhw Information Solutions, to implement the project in Ghana with a local health development firm, Savana Signatures. / Ce projet est mis en oeuvre dans 9 districts des régions du Nord et du Haut Ghana occidental. L'objectif est de contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité et de la morbidité maternelle et infantile en rendant l'information sur la santé maternelle facilement compréhensible accessible aux femmes enceintes et nouvelles dans un cadre interactif, en utilisant l'information Communications Technologie (ICT). Plus de la moitié des décès infantiles au Ghana arrive dans le premier mois de vie. Many women and children in Gua...temala and Kenya are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality. Chronic malnutrition affects 48 percent of the population of Guatemala, and 35 percent in Kenya. Infant mortality rates range from 24 deaths per 1,000 live births in Guatemala to 52 deaths per 1,000 live births in Kenya. In Guatemala, for every 100,000 births, 140 mothers die due to complications from child birth, and in Kenya the figure is 488 maternal deaths for every 100,000 births. This project seeks to contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. This initiative will: 1) increase the effectiveness of community referral systems; 2) increase awareness of existing health services; 3) strengthen the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. The project is improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant malnutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, local nutrition related health information systems are being strengthened through improved management of data collection, dissemination and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that the Project will reach more than 2.2 million people; where more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly and more than 880,000 people will benefit indirectly in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health; and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations. / Bon nombre de femmes et d'enfants du Guatemala et du Kenya courent un risque élevé de malnutrition et de mortalité. La malnutrition chronique touche 48 % de la population du Guatemala et 35 % de celle du Kenya. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project. / Ce programme de coopération volontaire appuie environ 1 125 affectations de conseillers volontaires. Haiti is one of the countries ...most affected by maternal mortality and child morbidity. The towns of Leogane and Gressier are located in the West department, where the population is densest and highest. This is also where the use of health institutions, consultations, coverage and assisted deliveries are lowest. This initiative aims to reduce mortality rates among pregnant women, newborns and children under five in Haiti by supporting four healthcare facilities to provide obstetrics and neonatal emergency services. Activities include: 1) training healthcare personnel in reproductive health; 2) implementing a network of 50 polyvalent community healthcare officers to increase offer and usage of available maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services; 3) rehabilitating and building community healthcare centres to facilitate efficient service delivery; 4) stocking community healthcare centres in target communities with medical supplies, basic medicine and necessary medical equipment; and 5) implementing a functional and effective integrated approach and coordinating mechanism amongst main stakeholders. The project directly benefits approximately 30,000 women, men and children residing in the Léogâne and Gressier communities, and benefits indirectly 224,000 people living in these two communities surrounding areas.It also contributes to helping 15,000 people in Canada to understand issues related to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Haiti. The project is implemented by a consortium lead by the Léger Foundation in collaboration with the Centre de coopération internationale en santé et développement (CCISD). It is also implemented with the collaboration of the following local partners: l'Unité Communale de Santé (UCS) de Léogane, under the Direction Sanitaire de l'Ouest du Ministère de la Santé publique et de la Population of the Government of Haiti, and the Soeurs missionnaires du Christ Roi. / Haiti fait partie des pays les plus touchés par la mortalité et morbidité maternelles et infantiles. Les communes de Léogâne et Gressier sont situées dans le département de l'Ouest où la population est la plus dense et la plus élevée. This project aims to improve m...aternal, newborn and child health by strengthening the ability of the Government of Honduras to govern the health sector effectively. The project works to improve the government's ability to produce and use accurate and reliable health information to develop more effective health policies and programs, to identify priority health needs, and to allocate health resources and funding strategically. Project activities include: (1) standardize the collection of health data; (2) obtain, install and maintain an information and communication system to facilitate the sharing of health information; and (3) better analyze health data and use this information to plan more effective health programs and to better allocate resources. Some project activities include: (1) harmonizing existing health information processes and helping to develop guidelines for the collection, processing, dissemination and monitoring of health data; (2) developing and implementing a system to collect, store and process health information; (3) providing training to strengthen the ability of the Government of Honduras to mange health information systems; and (4) promoting a legal framework that encourages better sharing of health information between different organizations. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants grâce au renforcement de la capacité du gouvernement du Honduras à gérer efficacement le secteur de la santé. Il a pour objectif d'accroitre la capacité du gouvernement à produire et à utiliser de l'information exacte et fiable en matière de santé pour élaborer des politiques et des programmes de santé plus efficaces, cerner les besoins prioritaires en santé et affecter stratégiquement les ressources de santé et le financement connexe. Plus précisément, le projet aide le gouvernement à : i) uniformiser la collecte de données sur la santé; ii) se procurer, installer et entretenir un système d'information et de communication pour faciliter le partage d'information sur la santé; iii) mieux analyser les données sur la santé et utiliser cette information pour planifier des programmes de santé plus efficaces et mieux distribuer les ressources. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) harmoniser les processus actuels d'information sur la santé et contribuer à l'élaboration de lignes directrices associées à la collecte, au traitement, à la diffusion et au suivi des données en matière de santé; 2) élaborer et mettre en oeuvre un système permettant de recueillir, d'enregistrer et de traiter l'information sur la santé; 3) offrir de la formation pour renforcer la capacité du gouvernement du Honduras à gérer les systèmes d'information sur la santé; 4) promouvoir la mise en place d'un cadre juridique qui favorise un meilleur partage de l'information sur la santé entre diverses organisations.

The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

This volunteer cooperation pro...gram supports approximately 1,125 volunteer advisor assignments. The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries; (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers; and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project. / Ce programme de coopération volontaire appuie environ 1 125 affectations de conseillers volontaires. Le projet vise à : 1) améliorer le bien-être économique et social de collectivités dans les pays ciblés; 2) améliorer les compétences, les capacités et la collaboration des partenaires locaux au moyen du placement de volontaires qualifiés; 3) accroitre les connaissances, la prise de conscience et le réseautage des Canadiens (p. ex., diaspora, anciens, universités, société civile et secteur privé) pour encourager ces derniers à participer aux efforts de développement du Canada, au moyen de l'organisation d'activités de partage des connaissances dans l'ensemble du pays. Le projet comprend des fonds dédiés à l'innovation qui permettent d'appuyer la mise à l'essai et la mise en oeuvre à grande échelle de pratiques d'avant-garde. Cuso est l'organisation de coopération volontaire chef de file en ce qui a trait à la mobilisation de la diaspora, et elle mobilise des volontaires de la diaspora dans le cadre de ce projet.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram allows for the sending of 60 volunteer advisors, mainly dentists, optometrists and homeopaths mission. The program aims to 1) strengthen the individual capacities of local partners; 2) improve the practices of health and education professionals; and 3) improve the day-to-day practices of managers and staff of partner organizations.These health professionals will aim to help alleviate, on a volunteer basis, some of the most urgent health deficiencies among the poor, starting with children and school-aged children and their mothers, in regions lacking access to care. This will significantly increase the learning capacity, job performance and income of beneficiaries. In addition, the Canadian volunteers contribute to community management of certain health problems by promoting the establishment of fruitful and lasting collaboration between organizations from within the community and the services provided by public health institutions. The program also supports a public engagement program to form a body of Canadian citizens who are more educated, informed and engaged./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet d'envoyer 60 conseillers volontaires, principalement des dentistes, optométristes ou homéopathes, en mission. Le programme vise à 1) renforcer les capacités individuelles des partenaires, 2) améliorer les pratiques des professionnels de la santé et de l'éducation, 3) améliorer les pratiques fonctionnelles des gestionnaires et du personnel des organisations partenaires.Ces professionnels de la santé remédieront à titre volontaire à certaines des déficiences en santé les plus urgentes chez les plus pauvres, à commencer par les enfants et jeunes d'âge scolaire et leurs mères, et ce dans des régions dépourvues de soins. Cela accroîtra sensiblement les capacités d'apprentissage ou encore le rendement au travail et les revenus des bénéficiaires. En outre, les volontaires canadiens contribueront à la prise en charge communautaire de certains problèmes de santé en favorisant l'établissement de collaborations fructueuses et durables entre des organisations issues du milieu et des services ou institutions de santé publique. Le programme appuie également un programme d'engagement du public afin de constituer un collectif de citoyens canadiens éduqués, informés et engagés.

The project aims to reinforce ...adult education and the use of sustainable agriculture in 52 rural communities in 8 departments of El Salvador and 43 rural communities in 4 departments of Honduras by the means of the following main activities: (1) providing agriculture extension services to youth, men and women in order to develop and diversify ecologically sustainable and diversify food production enterprises; (2) providing inputs and marketing assistance for these small family agriculture enterprises; (3) enhancing the agricultural knowledge of community members and partner organisation staff; (4) providing men, women and youth with certified adult education; (5) providing teacher-training workshops in adult education for regional facilitators and teachers; (6) providing young men and women with leadership training, and certified vocational skills training; (7) providing training to community members, technicians and masons in eco-stove building and maintenance; and (8) building eco stoves. The local partners in the project are the Centro nacional de trabajadores del campo (CNTC) in Honduras and the Asociación nacional de trabajadores agropecuarios (ANTA) in El Salvador. / Le projet vise à renforcer l'éducation des adultes et l'utilisation d'une agriculture durable dans 52 collectivités rurales dans 8 province du El Salvador et 43 collectivités rurales dans 4 provinces du Honduras à travers les principales activités suivantes : 1) offre de services de vulgarisation agricole aux jeunes, hommes et femmes afin de développer et de diversifier des entreprises de production alimentaire écologiquement durables; 2) octroi d'intrants et aide à la commercialisation à ces petites entreprises agricoles et familiales; 3) l'amélioration des connaissances agricoles des membres de la communauté et des employers de l'organisation partenaire; 4) dispension d' une éducation adulte certifiée aux hommes, femmes et jeunes; 5) ateliers de formation en éducation des adultes au profit des enseignants et des animateurs au niveau régional; 6) formation en leadership et formation professionnelle certifiée au profit de jeunes, hommes et femmes; 7) formation aux membres de la communauté, des techniciens et des maçons sur l'éco-construction et la maintenance; et 8) le renforcement des éco-fourneaux. This project aims to improve t...he health of people in developing countries by supporting the introduction of health and financial innovations in developing countries. The project supports eligible researchers and scientists from Canada and the developing world to implement their proven innovations where people suffer disproportionately from poor health. The project aims to implement low-tech, low-cost innovations that have the potential to be disseminated widely and successfully, and that use novel approaches to increase the delivery and demand of local health services. The project also aims to explore, test, and validate new financial mechanisms to encourage greater innovation and improved health outcomes. Innovative financing mechanisms include approaches whereby recipient countries or organizations receive financial support based on the fulfillment of specific conditions, such as the improvement of the health of mothers and children.Project activities include: (1) launching a call for proposals to Canadian and developing-country researchers and scientists for the scale-up of health innovations in low- and middle-income countries; (2) selecting proposals to scale-up eligible and proven health innovations; and, (3) launching a call for proposals to international organizations with expertise in innovative financing mechanisms to present concrete models with potential for successful implementation in low- and middle-income countries for testing and validation.Grand Challenges Canada is a federally incorporated, not-for-profit organization launched in 2010 that supports the implementation of the Government of Canada's Development Innovation Fund. The Fund was established to support innovators in Canada and the developing world to address and solve difficult challenges faced in health across the world./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des personnes qui vivent dans des pays en développement en appuyant la mise en place d'innovations relatives aux finances et à la santé dans ces pays. The project aims to improve in...comes, health, and the environment of the vulnerable and marginalized men and women dependent on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) economy in targeted areas in Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Java and Sulawesi. The project improves mining, environmental and social practices for men and women involved in the ASGM, including identifying alternatives to mercury use and training on safe handling of cyanide. The project also supports targeted subnational governments to better collaborate with the formal extractive sector and supports the formalization of ASGM activities through legal trade of responsible artisanal gold and value-added products in domestic and international markets. Activities include: (1) provide training on better practices for men and women miners; (2) provide training to targeted government and civil society groups on ASGM regulation and management; and (3) establish collaborative mechanisms with other relevant initiatives promoting responsible gold and diversification of the ASGM economy. This initiative supports the Government of Indonesia's implementation of the Minamata Convention on mercury, which both Canada and Indonesia signed in 2013. / Le projet vise à améliorer les revenus, la santé et l'environnement des hommes et des femmes vulnérables et marginalisés qui sont tributaires de l'économie de l'extraction aurifère artisanale et à petite échelle dans les régions ciblées de Kalimantan central, de Kalimantan-Sud, de Java et de Sulawesi. Le projet améliore les pratiques des hommes et femmes pratiquant ce type d'extraction, y compris de trouver des alternatives à l'utilisation du mercure et de donner une formation sur la manipulation sécuritaire du cyanure. Le projet soutient les gouvernements infranationaux ciblés afin de leur permettre de mieux collaborer avec le secteur de l'extraction structuré et de soutenir l'officialisation des activités liées à l'extraction artisanale et à petite échelle au moyen du commerce légal des produits. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) donner une formation sur les pratiques exemplaires pour les femmes et les hommes qui travaillent dans les mines; 2) donner une formation aux groupes des gouvernements et de la société civile ciblés sur la réglementation et la gestion de l'extraction aurifère artisanale et à petite échelle; 3) établir des méchanismes de collaboration avec d'autres initiatives pertinentes qui encouragent l'extraction aurifère responsable et la diversification de l'économie de l'extraction. Ce projet soutient la mise en oeuvre, par le gouvernement de l'Indonésie, de la Convention de Minamata sur le mercure, que le Canada et l'Indonésie ont signée en 2013.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Many women and children in Gua...temala and Kenya are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality. Chronic malnutrition affects 48 percent of the population of Guatemala, and 35 percent in Kenya. Infant mortality rates range from 24 deaths per 1,000 live births in Guatemala to 52 deaths per 1,000 live births in Kenya. In Guatemala, for every 100,000 births, 140 mothers die due to complications from child birth, and in Kenya the figure is 488 maternal deaths for every 100,000 births. This project seeks to contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. This initiative will: 1) increase the effectiveness of community referral systems; 2) increase awareness of existing health services; 3) strengthen the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. The project is improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant malnutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, local nutrition related health information systems are being strengthened through improved management of data collection, dissemination and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that the Project will reach more than 2.2 million people; where more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly and more than 880,000 people will benefit indirectly in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health; and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations. / Bon nombre de femmes et d'enfants du Guatemala et du Kenya courent un risque élevé de malnutrition et de mortalité. La malnutrition chronique touche 48 % de la population du Guatemala et 35 % de celle du Kenya. This volunteer cooperation pro...gram supports approximately 1,125 volunteer advisor assignments. The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries; (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers; and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project. / Ce programme de coopération volontaire appuie environ 1 125 affectations de conseillers volontaires. This project will provide evid...ence to expand the use of rapid response services, which offer promising strategies to support decision-making. This form of knowledge translation aims to meet the urgent needs for concrete research to answer specific questions from decision-makers in government, civil society organizations, and development partners. Research to inform policy Countries are striving to improve health outcomes by building strong and comprehensive health systems that address health inequities and reduce inefficiencies. To achieve this goal, policymakers need evidence to inform their decision-making. Finding evidence that is usable, timely, and relevant is challenging. For example, data is often fragmented across multiple information systems and research reports, and in formats that do not help decision-makers to address issues in a short timeframe. Rapid response for decision-making Rapid response approaches have the potential to address this challenge. These services use systematic reviews of research published around themes relevant to the specific questions. Effective rapid response services need to be able to receive and clarify decision-makers' requests. They should also search, appraise, and summarize the best available evidence. Researchers have piloted rapid response approaches in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Uganda, and Zambia. These services offer good potential to be scaled up nationally and replicated in other countries. Lessons learned, new services Building on the pilots, this project will inform the scale up of rapid response services within countries and across regions. The research teams will evaluate the four pilots and conduct research to better understand how to best use the services. They will also assess how to decentralize them from the national to the district levels in Uganda and Zambia. The project will establish a new rapid response service in Lebanon at the University of Beirut. This service will address priority health system issues, particularly within the context of a humanitarian crisis. The project is timely for Lebanon, a country that is working to strengthen its primary health care system to respond to current priorities such as the emerging crisis of Syrian refugees. Timely access to information The project will strengthen institutional and individual abilities to conduct and use systematic and rapid reviews to support the rapid response services. It will also provide timely access to relevant research evidence for decision-makers, and give global leaders from Africa and the Middle East deeper knowledge on how to establish and scale up rapid response services for evidence-informed decision-making to improve health outcomes.

The project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport. Activities include: 1) train health workers in such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); 2) improve utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; 3) prevent illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. In the project, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International and; in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda. / Le projet contribuera à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. This initiative aims to build ...local and facility-level capacity and accountability in order to reduce barriers that prevent pregnant women and mothers from utilizing sexual and reproductive health services in one province of Afghanistan and two regions in Malawi.The populations in both Afghanistan and Malawi face many challenges when it comes to accessing necessary medical care, particularly for pregnant women, and children. This has led to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Major factors that contribute to high mortality rates in both countries include long distances to health centres, a lack of skilled health professionals, and a lack of information regarding sexual and reproductive health. Project activities include: (1) improving the quality and supply of services at the facility level by improving the skills and approaches of health-care workers, as well as ensuring that the facilities and tools themselves are of standard quality and availability; (2) expanding demand for health services, and addressing gender gaps by increasing women's decision-making for their own and their children's health; and (3) increasing male support for women's decision making, increasing community participation in sexual and reproductive health, and changing behaviour that puts women and girls at risk. As a result, vulnerable groups will proactively seek and advocate for health services.This project targets 174,701 direct beneficiaries and 622,132 indirect beneficiaries.The Organization is implementing this project in collaboration with Community World Service Asia in Afghanistan, and in Malawi with Embangweni Mission Hospital (EMH) of Livingstonia Health Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterians (CCAP), and Mulanje Mission Hospital (MMH) of the CCAP Synod of Blantyre/Le projet vise à développer la responsabilisation, la capacité locale et celle des établissements à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes enceintes et les mères d'utiliser les services de santé génésique dans une province d'Afghanistan et deux régions du Malawi.Aussi bien en Afghanistan qu'au Malawi, les membres des collectivités, en particulier les femmes enceintes et les enfants, sont confrontés à de nombreuses difficultés d'accès à des soins médicaux. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This project builds on a previ...ous initiative supported by DFATD supporting the Mali Red Cross' efforts towards the Government of Mali's plans to reduce maternal and child mortality in the regions of Koulikoro and Sikasso. Initiative activities include: (1) raising awareness in communities on MNCH services available and ways to prevent illness through proper hygiene and sanitation; (2) training professional and community health workers, including volunteers, in the delivery and promotion of integrated packages of MNCH services; (3) training health staff in improved MNCH delivery, covering aspects such as management of service delivery, supervision of health workers, and procurement of medicines and supplies; (4) training health staff to collect, analyse and use administrative MNCH data to plan for improved MNCH service delivery and essentially improved health outcomes; and, (5) equipping health facilities with essential supplies and equipment. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.1 million women, men, adolescents, children and newborns. In addition, approximately 3.2 million adults and children are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Canadian Red Cross Society with the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children; and in collaboration with the local partner, the Mali Red Cross society. / Le projet table sur un projet antérieur appuyé par le MAECD qui vient en aide à la Croix-Rouge malienne pour mettre en oeuvre les plans du gouvernement du Mali visant à réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions de Koulikoro et de Sikasso. This volunteer cooperation pro...gram supports approximately 1,125 volunteer advisor assignments. The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries; (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers; and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project. / Ce programme de coopération volontaire appuie environ 1 125 affectations de conseillers volontaires. Le projet vise à : 1) améliorer le bien-être économique et social de collectivités dans les pays ciblés; 2) améliorer les compétences, les capacités et la collaboration des partenaires locaux au moyen du placement de volontaires qualifiés; 3) accroitre les connaissances, la prise de conscience et le réseautage des Canadiens (p. ex., diaspora, anciens, universités, société civile et secteur privé) pour encourager ces derniers à participer aux efforts de développement du Canada, au moyen de l'organisation d'activités de partage des connaissances dans l'ensemble du pays. Le projet comprend des fonds dédiés à l'innovation qui permettent d'appuyer la mise à l'essai et la mise en oeuvre à grande échelle de pratiques d'avant-garde. Cuso est l'organisation de coopération volontaire chef de file en ce qui a trait à la mobilisation de la diaspora, et elle mobilise des volontaires de la diaspora dans le cadre de ce projet.

The project aims to: (1) improve the economic and social well-being of communities in targeted countries; (2) improve local partners' competencies, capacities and collaboration through the placement of professional volunteers; and (3) improve the knowledge, awareness and networking of Canadians (e.g. diaspora, alumni, universities, civil society and private sector) to engage in Canada's development efforts by organizing knowledge-sharing events across Canada. The project includes Innovation Funds that support piloting and scaling of cutting-edge development practices. Cuso is the leading volunteer cooperation agency in diaspora engagement and mobilizes diaspora volunteers as part of this project. / Ce programme de coopération volontaire appuie environ 1 125 affectations de conseillers volontaires. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya. / Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.
