Strategies to Improve the Qual...ity of Health Care - Learning from Experiences in Uruguay and Chile
more
|
Improving access to primary he...alth care and the quality of services in Latin American countries is urgently needed to address high health inequities in the region. Lessons learned from two successful campaigns promoting maternal and child health in Chile and Uruguay could provide insights for further health reforms and improved service delivery across the region. Better access to primary health care and service delivery in Latin America is urgently needed to address high health inequities in the region. This involves implementing reforms, such as those undertaken in Uruguay and Chile where programs such as 'Good food and nutrition practices' and 'Chile grows with you' focused on improving maternal and child primary healthcare.' This research aims to identify and share those programs' success factors. Researchers in each country will examine how the programs addressed maternal and child health, focusing on their design and implementation. Teams will also conduct a comparative analysis of the framework guiding their respective policies and systems. Results will be disseminated at regional and national levels, encouraging reflection and discussion among various stakeholders. Findings will also inform program development and policy-making for greater health equity in the region. Two universities are working with a team of researchers that includes graduate level students in Chile and Uruguay.Expected outcomes include reports that will be shared widely in hopes of scaling up the programs, and making any needed refinements to the reforms in Uruguay and Chile. Better collaboration among researchers and decision-makers within and between both countries is also expected. This will help build capacity for and raise interest in this kind of research.

Linking Emerging Infectious Di...seases Research and Policy Networks in Southeast Asia and China: APEIR Phase II
more
|
The Asian Partnership on Emerg...ing Infectious Diseases Research (APEIR) is a multi-country, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research network that enables researchers and experts from several sectors, including agriculture and health, to explore joint research and policy questions in animal and public health. The partnership uses an ecohealth approach to address the complexity of emerging infectious diseases. This project presents a new phase of APEIR research on emerging threats from antimicrobial resistance and wildlife trade. It aims to strengthen the field of ecohealth and enhance emerging infectious disease control in Asia through research, capacity building, social and policy advocacy, and stronger knowledge and response networks. The wide use and abuse of antimicrobials as anti-infective drugs and non-therapeutic treatments are key contributors to persistent infections caused by resistance to antimicrobials. This use and abuse is also a major cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. In China and Southeast Asia, the lack of policy or regulation enforcements means that the use of antibiotics is not well-controlled. This research will provide evidence and guidance to develop country-specific and regional strategies to improve the responsible use of antibiotics and to reduce the emergence of resistant infectious agents in China, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Southeast Asia's thriving wildlife trade supports disease transmission to humans. It also threatens livestock, international trade, rural livelihoods, native wildlife populations, and ecosystem health. Little is known about the zoonotic disease risks involved in transmitting diseases between animals and humans. This study will assess the pathogens that circulate and will explore possible pathways of transmission to humans, specifically in China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It will help prevent emerging zoonotic infectious diseases. It will also decrease wildlife consumption, while educating people about the safe and wise use of wildlife as a source of food protein for poor people. Finally, it will support wildlife diversity and mitigate illegal wildlife trade in the region. Building on past research on avian influenza and ongoing knowledge-translation activities in the health field, this new phase of work will help APEIR build and support regional capacity to communicate and share knowledge to promptly address emerging infectious disease threats.

This project builds on achieve...ments accomplished in a previous project called Environmental Management and Capacity Development. It is community- and private-sector-oriented. It aims to support the poorest segments of Guyana's population, namely the rural poor and hinterland populations. The goal of the project is to promote private-sector-led economic growth that provides sustainable livelihoods and reduces poverty. Improvements to the health, skills, and economic opportunities of miners and the men, women and families in selected communities living near mining operations are also targeted through this project.

This project provides strategic and flexible support to key partners, through targeted technical assistance, the development and dissemination of case studies, regional lesson-learning events, and skill development and training for government and civil society personnel. The 2016-2017 call focused on human rights and strong partnership between the state and civil society. The project aims to improve in...comes, health, and the environment of the vulnerable and marginalized men and women dependent on the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) economy in targeted areas in Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Java and Sulawesi. The project improves mining, environmental and social practices for men and women involved in the ASGM, including identifying alternatives to mercury use and training on safe handling of cyanide. The project also supports targeted subnational governments to better collaborate with the formal extractive sector and supports the formalization of ASGM activities through legal trade of responsible artisanal gold and value-added products in domestic and international markets. Activities include: (1) provide training on better practices for men and women miners; (2) provide training to targeted government and civil society groups on ASGM regulation and management; and (3) establish collaborative mechanisms with other relevant initiatives promoting responsible gold and diversification of the ASGM economy. This initiative supports the Government of Indonesia's implementation of the Minamata Convention on mercury, which both Canada and Indonesia signed in 2013.

This project will provide evid...ence to expand the use of rapid response services, which offer promising strategies to support decision-making. This form of knowledge translation aims to meet the urgent needs for concrete research to answer specific questions from decision-makers in government, civil society organizations, and development partners. Research to inform policy Countries are striving to improve health outcomes by building strong and comprehensive health systems that address health inequities and reduce inefficiencies. To achieve this goal, policymakers need evidence to inform their decision-making. Finding evidence that is usable, timely, and relevant is challenging. For example, data is often fragmented across multiple information systems and research reports, and in formats that do not help decision-makers to address issues in a short timeframe. Rapid response for decision-making Rapid response approaches have the potential to address this challenge. These services use systematic reviews of research published around themes relevant to the specific questions. Effective rapid response services need to be able to receive and clarify decision-makers' requests. They should also search, appraise, and summarize the best available evidence. Researchers have piloted rapid response approaches in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Uganda, and Zambia. These services offer good potential to be scaled up nationally and replicated in other countries. Lessons learned, new services Building on the pilots, this project will inform the scale up of rapid response services within countries and across regions. The research teams will evaluate the four pilots and conduct research to better understand how to best use the services. They will also assess how to decentralize them from the national to the district levels in Uganda and Zambia. The project will establish a new rapid response service in Lebanon at the University of Beirut. This service will address priority health system issues, particularly within the context of a humanitarian crisis. The project is timely for Lebanon, a country that is working to strengthen its primary health care system to respond to current priorities such as the emerging crisis of Syrian refugees. Timely access to information The project will strengthen institutional and individual abilities to conduct and use systematic and rapid reviews to support the rapid response services. It will also provide timely access to relevant research evidence for decision-makers, and give global leaders from Africa and the Middle East deeper knowledge on how to establish and scale up rapid response services for evidence-informed decision-making to improve health outcomes.

This initiative is a key eleme...nt of the assistance provided by Canada to contribute to Mali reaching its development goals in the health sector, particularly in improving maternal, newborn and child health. It mainly aims to support the Ministry of Health of Mali in implementing is Ten-Year Health and Social Development Plan 2014-2023. As is the case for all budget support initiatives, Canada is working closely with other donors and the Government of Mali to improve the emphasis on accountability, transparency and effectiveness of national systems by increasing coordination and harmonization among donors and strengthening mutual accountability. Budgetary support also fosters greater policy dialogue between donors, government and partners, which helps to reinforce efforts to provide targeted and effective help and get results from long-term development. Monitoring and continuous evaluation of this initiative are made in conjunction with other donors.

The purpose of the Real Accountability: Data Analysis for Results (RADAR) project is for the Institute for International Programs of Johns Hopkins University to work with Canadian institutions and organizations, in-country evaluation partners, governments and development partners in a subset of countries where Canada has maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) programming.Project activities include: (1) support CAN-MNCH in the training of a cadre of Canadian technical experts that are available to assist in implementing the MNCH results tools in DFATD programs with MNCH programming; (2) support the design of an external, Canadian-based, data repository to ensure data quality, comparability and availability in order to generate regular results reports; (3) assist in the implementation of these tools in a select number of Canada's MNCH countries in order to validate results, refine the methodologies and ensure proper implementation. The ultimate beneficiaries for this project are mothers and children, as this initiative will develop tools to assess the quality of care provided to mothers and children, in the areas of nutrition and newborn health programs./ Ce projet vise à élaborer, mettre en œuvre et peaufiner des outils et approches pour renforcer la surveillance des pays et l'établissement de rapports sur la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) et la nutrition.

The goal of this project is to... provide women livestock farmers with greater access to and control of economic resources. It aims to increase the productivity of the dairy sector in three districts of southern Punjab in a way that creates opportunities for women to contribute more equitably to the sector. The project supports activities in three main areas: i) The project aims to strengthen 100 existing dairy cooperatives (Farmers' Milk Cooperatives) and establish up to 250 new cooperatives. Activities in this area include: providing the cooperatives with modern milk processing equipment; training farmers in modern techniques for breeding and raising livestock; and establishing local support services such as veterinary workers, artificial insemination technicians, and milk marketing specialists. ii) The project aims to increase the contribution of women livestock farmers to the dairy sector. Activities in this area include: providing the poorest women with assets such as buffalos, barns, feed mixers, and water troughs; providing training on how to use and manage these new assets; and providing training for female executives of the cooperatives to help them become more widely involved across the dairy sector. iii) The project aims to facilitate the creation of connections between farmers, cooperatives, the private sector, and the government. Activities in this area include: poster campaigns to increase the visibility of the cooperatives; media and communications campaigns to engage potential private sector partners for farmers and the cooperatives; and expanding the ability of the cooperatives and the government to provide local educational and advisory services that meet the needs of the dairy sector. The project is expected to benefit up to 12,250 dairy farmers and their families.
