In 2007, IDRC provided the Eco...health Journal with a grant to increase its Southern content (104284). The results were satisfactory. The magazine increased the number of articles from the South and added three Southern members to the board. This grant will allow the International Association for Ecology and Health (IAEH) to expand its outreach to the developing world by soliciting manuscripts that address Ecohealth issues in developing regions written by Southern researchers. The grant will also cover a writeshop and an editorial consultant.

INTEGRATING GENDER AND EQUITY ...IN HEALTH RESEARCH AND POLICY IN INDIA
more
|
Integrating Gender and Equity ...in Health Research and Policy in India
more
|
In India, researchers and poli...cymakers have only partially succeeded in incorporating gender concerns in health research, policy and programs. There is need for a more indepth and nuanced gender analysis on women's health. And, gaps still exist in the issues covered, such as the intersection of gender with caste and economic class. This project will be carried out in two parts, the first being research and the second advocacy. Researchers will further develop an existing gendered framework for analyzing health systems, and apply it to ongoing field research on women`s health in Karnataka State. The research findings will then be used to pilot test innovations, reframe existing policy, and advocate for better services to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, and violence against women. In this context, violence against women is understood, not as episodic, but as systematic, violation of women`s physical and psychological health through normalized patterns of deprivation and abuse.Specific outputs will include: a framework for understanding violence against women; adaptation of the 'Three Delays' model of maternal mortality to resource-poor and highly gender-biased contexts; and procedures for handling risks and complications in pregnancy. The results will be fed into ongoing work of the High Level Expert Group on Universal Health Coverage.

ASSESSING THE ATTITUDES AND PR...ACTICES OF PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS REGARDING FUNDING FROM FOR-PROFIT CORPORATIONS
more
|
Assessing the Attitudes and Pr...actices of Public Health Professionals Regarding Funding from For-Profit Corporations
more
|
Over the past two decades, man...y corporations have begun philanthropic contributions to universities under the rubric of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In an era of dwindling support from governments and foundations, many universities have, in turn, begun to solicit funds from businesses. In the case of schools of public health, some potential corporate funders make products that may be considered harmful to health or a threat to the environment, creating a potential conflict of interest. The overall aim of this project is to inform a policy debate about possible guidelines for making decisions about accepting funds from for-profit corporations. At present, there are no generalized guidelines to govern the receipt of research and sponsorship funds from for-profit corporations - practices differ by schools and programs of public health. This project, managed by the American University of Beirut, will survey public health academics and practitioners around the world about their attitudes and practices around funding from for-profit corporations, particularly those whose products are associated with non-communicable diseases. The project will also review existing policies that govern schools of public health around the globe with respect to taking funds from for-profit corporations. The project will focus on schools and programs of public health in the Eastern Mediterranean region, North America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

|
Contributions of Global Health... Diplomacy to Health Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa:Evidence and Information to Support Capabilities for Health Diplomacy
more
|
Health is becoming a core feat...ure of global negotiations, whether they relate to trade, economic growth, or social development. New research will help boost Africa's bargaining power in global health diplomacy,The term global health diplomacy has been coined to describe the multidisciplinary work related to diplomacy, public policy, and global health. But an underlying North-South divide exists in this area, leaving Africa - and sub-Saharan Africa in particular - at a disadvantage. Although the region is highly integrated in the global economy, it has little bargaining power in such high-level negotiations. In health, for example, this has consequences when global level agreements and negotiations limit the space for national policy decisions on the development and strengthening of equitable health systems. This research aims to examine and communicate the most important elements countries need to assert their public health interests in global health diplomacy from an African perspective. The research will look at three examples of global health diplomacy important to sub-Saharan Africa: 1) the implementation of the World Health Organization's Code on International Recruitment of Health Personnel; 2) new collaboration on access to essential drugs through South-South relationships involving Africa, China, Brazil, and India; and 3) the involvement of African actors in getting universal access to prevention, treatment, and care for HIV and AIDS. The research will be led by the African-based organization EQUINET / Training and Research Support Centre, working with the Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations Institute. Research teams conducting the case studies will be selected through an open call. African policymakers, knowledge brokers, and other key stakeholders will be involved throughout the research process. Expected outcomes of the research include some 200 publications consisting of background literature reviews, in-depth case studies, and scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals that will be posted on the EQUINET website. African policymakers and other relevant actors will be exposed to the arguments, methods, and challenges of global health diplomacy so they can engage more effectively in this emerging field.

ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTI...CE TO SYSTEMS THINKING TO STRENGTHEN EQUITY IN HEALTH SYSTEMS
more
|
Advancing Knowledge and Practi...ce to Systems Thinking to Strengthen Equity in Health Systems
more
|
Many global efforts to address... health issues in low- and middle-income countries have focused on individual diseases or treatment approaches. Extensive resources, for example, have been devoted to combatting HIV/AIDS, or increasing vaccination rates for common childhood diseases. But improving health outcomes for the poor ultimately depends on strong health systems. Strengthening these systems demands that donors, planners, and policymakers think broadly, in terms of how the system as a whole is benefiting the people it is intended to serve. While the field of systems thinking has been applied in many other areas, such as business and education, there is a lack of knowledge and experience about applying this approach in the health sector, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.healTo address this gap, this project supports the development of a peer-reviewed journal supplement on how systems thinking can be applied to strengthen health systems. Some 12 individual articles will cover methodologies or tools that support its use in the design, implementation, and evaluation of health interventions in low- and middle-income countries. The goal is to translate systems thinking principles from theory into health practice. In selecting and developing articles for publication, the emphasis will be on collaboration among Southern-based researchers, with some North-South interaction. Emerging researchers, local stakeholders, and decision-makers involved in managing health interventions are actively encouraged to participate. The aim is to see the resulting articles published in a globally recognized journal.

Supporting Participation and G...eneration of Knowledge at the Second Global Symposium on Health Systems Research
more
|
Health systems research is inc...reasingly recognized as the basis for building stronger health systems that can provide better health for all. In November 2010, 1,200 participants from more than 100 countries gathered in Montreux, Switzerland for the First Global Symposium on Health Systems Research. The conference attracted stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to share evidence, identify knowledge gaps, and set a research agenda that reflects the needs of LMICs. This grant will allow researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to attend the second international conference on health systems research, and will support publication of a special peer-reviewed journal. As stated in the Montreux statement, There is an enormous energy to move forward with a further agenda of action reflecting the spirit and commitment that brought us to Montreux from Mexico and Mali. The Second Global Symposium on Health Systems Research: Inclusion and Innovation Towards Universal Health Coverage is slated for October 31 to November 3, 2012, in Beijing, China. The Symposium co-organizer, the WHO Alliance for Health Systems and Policy Research, will develop a peer-reviewed supplement for a prestigious journal. This supplement will contain14-16 articles that showcase quality research by researchers on topic areas featured at the Symposium. The grant also includes support for this publication.

Pan-American Partnership for I...ntegrative Research, Policy, and Practice on Health, Environment, and Society
more
|
The Americas is home to divers...e ecosystems that are vulnerable to increasing stress from environmental change, including changing climate, rapid urbanization, air and water pollution, and intensified agriculture and natural resources use. These stresses have direct impacts on the health and well-being of populations across the region. These are multi-faceted issues that are often only understood in the effort to solve or mitigate them. Ecosystems approaches to health provide a means to better understand multiple links between health and the environment. These approaches include more integrated and effective responses which promote collaboration guided by evidence. This project will leverage the best of ecohealth approaches in Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This partnership aims to improve methods and means to influence and guide inter-sector policies and practices which contribute to healthy, just, and ecologically sustainable societies. The project team will develop and implement a Pan-American research and capacity-building program over a four-year period. The program will include training awards, intensive summer schools, professional development workshops, research fellowships, and multistakeholder dialogue sessions. The project will increase the interest and ability of policymakers, practitioners, and researchers to put into practice multi-sector responses for improving human health and ecosystem resilience (the ecosystem's ability to resist damage and to recover quickly). The partnership will help strengthen and embed ecosystem approaches to health in the Americas. It will also build sustainable communities of practice and reinforce their alliances with other groups and institutions.

|
As countries strive to improve... service delivery and expand universal health coverage, evidence of what works in building integrated and equitable health systems is urgently needed. Health systems research is a field of inquiry that builds the knowledge needed to inform health systems development. IDRC s Governance for Equity in Health Systems (GEHS) program supports a rich portfolio of research projects that consider governance and equity challenges, taking a broad approach to health systems. This grant aims to disseminate the approach and work supported by the GEHS program to provide its results greater visibility and reach. This will be done through the development of communication products and participation in key events, with the goal of sharing research results and influencing policies, practices, agendas, and funding priorities. Media activities and publications will be used to share research findings more broadly as well.Among the activities to be funded through this grant are a brief on universal health coverage and three synthesis briefs on the lasting impact of supported projects; a high-level consultation on measuring and monitoring country progress toward universal health coverage; the second conference of the Latin American Association for Global Health; a peer review journal article on the topic of sexual violence and health; and input into the UN General Assembly.

Universal Health Coverage as a... Sustainable Development Goal: Thematic Working Group Work of the UN Leadership Council
more
|
Growing global aspiration for ...universal health coverage makes a strong case for its inclusion among the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that will be adopted by the United Nations in 2015. These goals are intended to provide a road map for global development after 2015. This research support project aims to reduce health inequalities by promoting universal access to essential health services and enhancing financial protection for those seeking health care anywhere in the world. This will be achieved through the UN's adoption of Universal Health Coverage as a post-2015 SDG. The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), established with the support of the UN Secretary-General, will provide technical support to the UN-led inter-governmental processes for developing the SDGs. The SDSN's thematic working group on health is developing an evidence-informed case to include universal health coverage as a SDG. The network has also produced 14 policy briefs on the links between health and other development goals. These will be disseminated to the UN's High Level Panel of Eminent Persons, governmental delegations, relevant UN agencies, international development partners, civil society organizations, and the media. A small secretariat will support this two-year effort. It will be located at the Public Health Foundation of India. This project will support the secretariat and working group's work (literature review; research synthesis; consensus meetings; document development, printing, and dissemination).

THE ROLE OF NON-STATE ACTORS I...N STRENGTHENING HEALTH SYSTEMS
more
|
The role of non-state actors i...n strengthening health systems
more
|
In a majority of low and middl...e income countries, governments are ultimately responsible for the provision of healthcare to their citizens even while they are not the sole providers of healthcare. A proliferation of non-state health actors exists outside of the public sector and the services they provide vary immensely in complexity and national importance. Non-state health actors include, for example, commercial companies, non-governmental organizations, religious institutions, individual care providers, and shopkeepers. Currently there is considerable global momentum towards the achievement of universal health coverage in the form of quality health services that are accessible without the risk of financial hardship. In this context many low and middle income governments are seeking to better understand and harness the contributions of non-state actors to the provision of healthcare. Although situations of non-state actor involvement vary, the outcomes can be particularly detrimental when the services provided by non-state actors are low quality or very expensive and thus exacerbate health and income inequities. Governance strategies for optimizing the contributions of non-state health actors include: 1) targeted interventions such as public-private partnerships; and 2) changes in policy and regulatory environments. Existing reviews of the impact of these governance strategies on the quality and equity of services provided by non-state actors are limited and have been largely inconclusive. The International Development Research Centre, Rockefeller Foundation, and the Alliance for Health Systems and Policy Research will jointly support a portfolio of approximately ten research projects responding to the question How can non-state providers contribute to improved health coverage, and how can governments facilitate this? Each project will undertake observational research examining existing and relevant country cases. The research will be performed by researchers from low and middle income countries and focus exclusively on low and middle income country contexts. A two-stage competitive selection process will be used to identify and select the research projects. By comparing and contrasting various low and middle income countries experiences, this portfolio of thematically linked research projects will contribute to a body of evidence urgently required in those countries. Policy-makers in low and middle income countries and others seeking to optimize the contribution of non-state actors to universal health coverage will be informed by new evidence and policy lessons. The conclusions of the research will be made available via a book, a special journal issue, policy briefs, videos, dissemination workshops, and innovative use of social media.

Development of a Reader on Par...ticipatory Action Research as a Contribution to Knowledge and Evidence in Health Systems Research
more
|
Participatory action research ...(PAR) methods are still not well understood by the public health community. While there is a growing realization that this needs to change, very little has been done in the field of public health and health systems research (HSR) to bridge this gap. The current project intends to fill this void by producing a scientific publication centred on PAR methods in HSR. This will involve taking stock of how PAR has been used in public health in general and HSR in particular until now, specifically focusing on the post 2000 period. Project activities will include background literature search, writing up various sections of the publication with internal and external peer review, and dissemination at various fora, including the Global Symposium on Health Systems Research 2014 in Cape Town, South Africa. The publication will be translated into French and Spanish.Other means of dissemination will include use in the master's in global health program at the University of Aberdeen, and master's and doctoral programs at the Metropolitan Autonomous University, Mexico, and at the National School of Public Health, Brazil. The publication will be also used in EQUINET's learning network on PAR and by the Network of the Latin American Association for Social Medicine.

THE CONTRIBUTION OF CIVIL SOCI...ETY ORGANIZATIONS IN ACHIEVING HEALTH FOR ALL

|
The Contribution of Civil Soci...ety Organizations in Achieving Health for All
more
|
This project will allow the Pe...ople's Health Movement (PHM) to assess, learn, and improve on its programming, as well as identify lessons to inform broader civil society engagement in achieving Health for All (HfA). PHM is a global network of community-based organizations undertaking advocacy to achieve HfA. Global gaps in health care The World Health Organization's Health for All declaration in 1978 called for addressing global public health challenges by incorporating a people-centered approach to national health systems. Since then, despite such efforts as including substantial social and economic reform, inequities have increased, resulting in widening gaps between the haves and have-nots. Global public health challenges Since HfA, there have been numerous national, regional, and international efforts to address global public health challenges. Most have taken a vertical approach to eradicating specific diseases, rather than comprehensive approaches to strengthening health systems. Various global actors have been involved in these efforts, including bilateral and multilateral organizations, private foundations and philanthropies, and civil society groups. Civil society groups have been mostly disparate and focused on issue- or disease-specific campaigns. To deal with this fragmentation, several groups came together in 2000 to form the People's Health Movement. Their objective was to strengthen collaboration to address public health challenges globally and to achieve HfA. About the People's Health Movement PHM is now an established global network of community and civil society organizations working toward HfA through six main programs: -organizing at the country level -providing training -supporting research -developing information resources -campaigning around specific issues -engaging officials in multilevel evidence-based policy dialogue The need for evaluation After more than a decade of supporting organizing, networking, and capacity strengthening activities, PHM is evaluating its experience and consolidating a knowledge base and framework to inform broader civil society engagement. The proposed internal assessment will inform PHM programming and guide future action. It will support a generational transition in PHM by strengthening junior and mid-level researchers' capacities to: -undertake research -apply insights in planning future activities -develop and implement a succession plan At the same time, the experiences will be used to deepen understanding about the role of civil society engagement in achieving HfA. Researchers will critically analyze how civil society engagement can take place and be supported so that it contributes to HfA. The project will allow the team to build skills in research methods and management, advocacy, and leadership. Research methods will include surveys, discussions, interviews, and workshops. Civil society researchers from eight countries where PHM is active will undergo training. Experts will also mentor t

Results dissemination for a pr...oject funded by the Teasdale-Corti Global Health Research Partnership Program
more
|
The Global Health Research Ini...tiative s Teasdale-Corti Global Health Research Partnership Program ended in 2012. The Teasdale-Corti program supported global health individual researchers (via 13 Global Health Leadership Awards) and research teams (via 14 Team Grants) to partner with research users in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to develop, test and implement innovative approaches to making research matter for health and development. Among these teams was the one led by Pierre Fournier and Slim Haddad of the Université de Montréal, and Banza Baya of the Université de Ouagadougou, who carried out the Improving policies and programs to meet the health needs of vulnerable groups and communities project. Among the Teasdale-Corti program s (and also the project s) objectives:-Foster collaboration to promote the generation and effective communication and use of relevant health in LMICs; and-Train and support researchers and research users responsive to policy and practice priorities of LMICs relating to or influencing health. To help achieve these objectives, the Fournier, Slim, and Baya team oversaw the production of a special issue of the Global Health Promotion journal, featuring articles on empirical research by African researchers, most of whom were not members of the research team. The special issue explores the mechanisms by which vulnerability in health emerges and endures, as well as analyses of policies and interventions aimed at protecting affected populations in sub-Saharan Africa. The articles aim to promote the development of programs and policies based on evidence. The special issue project brings together a series of scientific contributions that promote research on vulnerability and health in sub-Saharan Africa, and provides an opportunity to enhance the scientific writing capacity and publishing outlet for young African researchers.

GATHERING PERSPECTIVES 2: BUIL...DING A PAN-CANADIAN FRAMEWORK FOR GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH

Gathering Perspectives 2: Buil...ding a Pan-Canadian Framework for Global Health Research
more
|
Research Description This proj...ect will support the study, Gathering Perspectives 2, which will allow Canadian and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) researchers to enhance Canada's contributions to global health research through partnerships and practice. Connecting Canada with the world The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) will lead the project. CCGHR is an organization of 360 members in Canada and 221 in LMICs. They include global health researchers based at universities, think tanks, and NGOs. CCGHR aims to promote better and more equitable health worldwide through knowledge production and use. Its current strategic priorities are to: -strengthen the capacities of global health researchers, institutions, and systems; -use knowledge translation, brokering, and communication to support the funding and use of health research; and -improve collaboration among health researchers and research institutions locally, regionally, and globally. Advancing research connections In 2013, CCGHR led a research study entitled Gathering Perspectives on the Role of Research in a Canadian Vision for Global Health. The research team asked Canadian researchers about their views on the future of global health research and relationships within the research community. One finding was that research, and research uptake, could be strengthened in various ways. For example, new guidelines to cover collaborations with LMIC research partners could improve the practice of global health research. Principles and guidelines related to equity, engagement, and effectiveness would complement the research ethics guidelines that typically focus on research subjects. Another suggestion was to consider ways to include global health researchers from LMICs and Canada in reviewing health-related research in Canada. These ideas will be explored in this second study, Gathering Perspectives 2. Enhancing Canada's contribution This project will strengthen the Canadian and LMIC research community's contribution to global health research through: -developing a database of global health researcher capacity in Canadian universities and affiliated institutions; -developing guidelines for core competencies and professional practice in global health research; -disseminating project results to key stakeholders, including CCGHR members, other universities, Canadian Academy for Health Sciences, health-related NGOs, and federal and provincial agencies involved in health research.

more
|
Provide core financial support... in the amount of $25, 000 to the 21st Canadian Conference on Global Health taking place in Ottawa, Canada, November 2-4, 2014. This support will enhance GHRI s exposure to health practitioners, researchers, educators, policy makers, and community advocates, and staff participation and will allow for the identification of new opportunities in the changing environment of ethical health systems development.GHRI also wishes to support the custom conference mobile phone app (application) for $3,500. This smartphone application will be downloaded by participants at the Canadian Conference for Global Health to access the conference program. The organizers successfully implemented this last year. The sponsorship of this app will also allow GHRI a certain customization to include a website link (via the app) to the two open-access journal supplements that we produced this past year, as part of the dissemination of the results of the African Health Systems Initiative Research Program (AHSI-RES). The two supplements can be accessed here (HRH) and here (HSR)*. We see this as an important dissemination opportunity within Canada and for interested stakeholders.* http://www.human-resources-health.com/supplements/12/S1* http://www.biomedcentral.com/bmchealthservres/supplements/14/S1

STRENGTHENING THE ROLE OF PRIV...ATE SECTOR HEALTH PROVIDERS TOWARD UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE IN MENA

Strengthening the Role of Priv...ate Sector Health Providers Toward Universal Health Coverage in MENA
more
|
There is a growing global cons...ensus on the need to work toward universal health coverage in the post-2015 global development agenda. In parts of the developing world, public health systems provide only part of the answer and leave an unmet demand for health care. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), private sector healthcare providers appear to be thriving to meet this demand. However, little is known regarding the size and nature of this sector. The World Health Organization will convene a three-day consultation to share the results of recent assessments that map the status of private sector health providers across MENA. The consultation will also examine the extent to which regulations in Egypt and Yemen ensure both the safety of patients and competition among providers in this sector. This grant will cover the costs to convene a three-day consultation on strengthening the role of the private health sector toward universal health coverage. The consultation will examine the need for further study. It will also help establish the potential contribution and challenges facing the private health sector in a universal health coverage environment.

The Productive Safety Net Prog...ram is an initiative targeting some of the underlying causes of food insecurity in Ethiopia. Led by the Government of Ethiopia, with the support of CIDA and other donors, the goal of this program is to reduce the vulnerability of chronically food insecure people and enable them to progress towards more resilient livelihoods. The program is designed to provide predictable, multi-year transfers of either food or cash to chronically food insecure people. Food or cash resources are provided to beneficiaries in exchange for their labour on public works projects designed to create productive community assets. These projects include activities such as: terracing and afforestation to improve soil conservation and restore degraded watersheds; water harvesting schemes; small-scale irrigation schemes and the construction of infrastructure such as rural roads, schools and health centres. Food is also provided directly to those beneficiaries who are unable to participate in public works such as orphans, pregnant and lactating women, households with only elderly residents, young children and mothers in female-headed households, and people living with HIV/AIDS. CIDA support to this program is provided through the World Food Programme and the World Bank. CIDA s support also includes a technical assistance component. All CIDA disbursements for this project have been completed and the results of our investment are outlined below. The Productive Safety Net Prog...ram (PSNP) initiative targets some of the underlying causes of food insecurity, or lack of access to safe, nutritious and sufficent food, in Ethiopia. Led by the Government of Ethiopia, with the support of DFATD and other donors, this flagship program helps meet the food needs of many of the country's most impoverished people in the time between harvests by providing them predictable, multi-year transfers of either food or cash. Recognizing Canada's expertise on capacity development, the Government of Ethiopia and other donor partners have mandated DFATD to design and implement a capacity development initiative, the Safety Net Support Facility, as part of Canada's overall support to the Productive Safety Net Program. The Safety Net Support Facility project aims to enhance the technical, administration, and management capacity of government partners to deliver the PSNP. It provides technical assistance to regional implementers of the PSNP in four regions of Ethiopia (Tigray; Amhara; Oromiya; and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region) in order to improve the PSNP results. This is achieved by strengthening institutional systems, processes and coordination mechanisms and increasing the organizational capacity of key PSNP implementers.

This project represents Canada...'s continuing support for Ethiopia's Productive Safety Net Program. This national program addresses some of the underlying factors that leave many poor people in rural Ethiopia unable to meet their daily food requirements on a year-round basis. Led by the Government of Ethiopia, with the support of Canada and other donors, the program aims to reduce the chronic vulnerability these people experience and enable them to progress towards self-sufficiency. The program is designed to provide timely transfers of food or cash to beneficiaries during certain periods of the year when food is not readily available. As a result, the beneficiaries do not have to sell their limited assets (livestock, farm implements) in order to survive until the next growing season. The beneficiaries receive the food or cash in exchange for their labour on small, community-based, public works projects that contribute to the well-being of the community involved. These projects are chosen by the communities and may include activities such as: (i) terracing and planting trees to improve soil conservation and restore degraded watersheds, so that more land can become agriculturally productive; (ii) small-scale water collection and irrigation initiatives to provide water sources during the growing season, thus decreasing the chance of losing crops due to limited rainfall; or (iii) the construction of community infrastructure such as rural roads to enable farmers to go to and from markets, schools for children to enhance their future economic opportunities, or health centres so that people can become and remain healthy in order to be contributing members in their community. Food is also provided directly to eligible beneficiaries who, due to personal circumstances, are unable to provide labour for public works. These include orphans, pregnant and lactating women, households with only elderly residents, young children and mothers in female-headed households, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Canada's support to this program is provided through the United Nations World Food Programme and the World Bank.

This project aims to strengthe...n civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems to enhance the health and well-being of women and children in developing countries. CRVS systems provide timely and reliable data for public health statistics that are necessary for the effective planning and monitoring of health systems. This project accelerates efforts to improve CRVS systems by: (1) performing in-depth case studies of specific CRVS needs; (2) developing investment plans that lay out the costs associated with developing effective CRVS systems; and (3) conducting a technical consultation to discuss findings and potential challenges for future investments in CRVS. This project also aims to provides a roadmap for potential future investments in CRVS in the four targeted countries. In addition, the project seeks to collect critical information for a high-level event on CRVS taking place in Canada in 2014 and to address the gaps in support for CRVS globally.

This project seeks to increase... the registration of children under the age of five, and improve the availability, quality, timeliness, and use of health information to assist in the planning of effective activities to improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). The project also seeks to improve the availability and quality of information on child mortality to better inform planning and resource allocation, and increase accountability to MNCH efforts. The project assists developing countries to increase number of birth registrations by addressing access barriers, including reaching those who live in rural areas by mobilizing community health workers in the birth registration process. The project also seeks to use innovations, such as SMS technologies, to increase the number of births being registered. This initiative supports two key recommendations from the United Nations Commission on Information and Accountability for Women and Children s Health: (i) to take significant steps to establish a system for registration of births, deaths and causes of death, and have well-functioning health information systems; and (ii) to integrate the use of information and communication technologies in national health management information systems and health infrastructure.

The project aims to create an ...environment that leads to the inclusion of disabled persons in mainstream social structures, empowering them physically, economically and socially to become self-reliant and fully integrated members of their communities. The project focuses on the provision of inclusive basic education for children living with disabilities. This approach allows these children to participate in education programs. Christian Blind Mission International (Canada) proposes a multisectoral approach known as Community-Based Rehabilitation, recognized, among others, by the World Health Organization as an effective way to address barriers experienced by disabled persons in developing countries.

This grant represents CIDA's s...upport to the Global Health Research Initiative's (GHRI) secretariat. The GHRI uses these funds, along with funding from other Canadian government departments and agencies, to achieve its mandate. The GHRI is a research funding partnership of five Canadian federal agencies and departments whose mandates span health, research and development assistance: CIDA, Health Canada, the International Development Research Centre, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The GHRI aims to improve health and strengthen health systems by supporting collaboration between researchers and research end-users in Canada and low- and middle-income countries. The GHRI works to coordinate Government of Canada research efforts for effective, evidence-based interventions in the field of global health, to inform the work of CIDA and other Canadian departments and agencies. The GHRI Secretariat provides support to research programs and the general functioning of the Initiative.
