Incidents of sexual violence a...gainst girls and young women are finally receiving global media coverage. Media reportss and public condemnation have broken the silence on this troubling social issue, but awareness is not enough. This project will provide evidence to help transform the policy and program landscape for girls' safety and security in South Africa and Canada. New approaches to sharing knowledge The project team will examine how knowledge about sexual assault is co-created by girls and young women in different settings. The researchers will investigate innovative approaches to sharing information. The project's methodology draws on approaches to learning from the ground up, which include digital storytelling, participatory video, cellphilms (films made with cell phones), drawing and mapping, community radio, and social media. It also builds on youth-led media making, community-based research, participatory action research, research as a form of intervention, and research as a way to generate social change. Youth leadership for policy change This pioneering initiative seeks to positively impact the lives of current and future generations of girls and young women. In different locations and across two countries, the research will examine how youth-led media influences community practitioners and policymakers. It aims to shift the boundaries of knowledge production and inform policy change. Specific activities include: -Conduct research into the role girls can play to inform the study and eradication of sexual violence, -Analyze the impact of participatory policy-making, -Advance understanding of how digital and social media tools can be used in participatory research, -Develop new communication approaches to prevent and address sexual violence, -Train and support girl-focused solutions, -Engage policymakers in girl-led dialogues, -Create a transnational platform for raising awareness and advocacy, -Support seven students (post-doctoral, PhD, and master's) from South Africa to work with their Canadian peers, and -Organize two training institutes for graduate students in participatory policy-making and digital and social media. Project participants The University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and McGill University (Canada) are leading this international and interdisciplinary partnership. The project brings together universities, government agencies, and community-based organizations. The International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies program is funding the project. The South African team is largely supported by IDRC. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is providing support to the Canadian team.

The project aims to increase w...omen's political representation and participation in public decision-making, to empower and strengthen the rights of women and girls, and to reduce the gender gap in leadership through increased engagement and coordination of Inter-American and United Nations (UN) institutions, and regional women's rights organizations. The goals of the Women's Empowerment Task Force for Latin America and the Caribbean are to: (1) collectively supporting member states in achieving their common goals related to women's empowerment and leadership through enhanced cooperation, (2) ensuring that institutional efforts are complementary, (3) filling key policy and programming gaps through evidence-based collaboration, and potentially leveraging funding for these gaps, (4) amplifying existing initiatives and making them more accessible to marginalized groups, including Indigenous, Afro-descendant, rural, young and LGBTI women, and (5) establishing a coordinated body of knowledge on women's leadership in the region, and reporting on its accomplishments at the 2021 Summit of the Americas. Beneficiaries include the stakeholders participating in Task Force activities such as representatives from member states, women's rights organizations, academic and research institutions, and the private sector. Indirect beneficiaries include women who participate in leadership projects generated because of the work of the Task Force.

While there is a growing body ...of information available about child marriage globally, relatively little comparative work has been done to examine its different manifestations, experiences and impacts in different settings. The majority of studies have explored its causes and consequences for girls in south Asia, and to a lesser extent, in sub-Saharan Africa. Empirical research in many parts of east and southern Africa is still limited, as it is for nearly all of Latin America. The Governance and Justice program has developed a portfolio of five projects on Early Child and Forced Marriage (ECFM), spanning ten countries across West and East Africa, South Asia and Latin America. Each of the projects have designed and are implementing differing research and/or interventions with the overall aim to influence policy, practice, research or innovations that foster transformative changes in the lives of girls, women and communities. Along these lines, each project promises success in meeting their individual objectives; however, a role and process for joining up the ECFM projects to consolidate and amplify their collective findings is currently missing. The proposed consolidation project is a timely, much-needed and exciting opportunity to provide a critical, comparative perspective on ECFM, capable of speaking to, reaching and influencing a wider audience beyond the individual project countries. In so doing, it aims to promote collective learning and improved research, practice and policy at the national, regional and international level. This consolidation piece will be co-lead by Young Lives at the University of Oxford and Child Frontiers.

This project implements the fo...undational set of activities towards a broader initiative to generate knowledge and applied evidence to contribute to combatting sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) and improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (ASRH) in West Africa. The project will focus on the synthesis of regional knowledge, engagement with key stakeholders, development and implementation of a partnership strategy and exploration of potential youth-centric research projects. A separate but complementary component will support the research projects in two francophone countries, before expanding to other countries belonging to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and supporting a regional process to synthesize, disseminate and utilize the evidence. These activities are needed to encourage transformational change to reduce sexual and gender based violence and improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights. There is a need to break down the silos amongst actors and sectors as well as to promote changes in norms, strengthen systems, and contribute to more informed and holistic policy and practice. Synergies between this initiative and all Maternal and Child Health and Governance and Justice programming in West Africa will be made to facilitate information and knowledge sharing and use as well as joint participation in events. This would also potentially contribute to future collaboration with IDRC-funded and other institutions, for example, Young Life Project, the West African Health Organisation, the ECOWAS Gender and Development Center and other similar initiatives and organizations. This will contribute to a strong critical mass of evidence, actors and capacity to influence discourse, policy and practice.

This project aims to increase ...sustainable economic growth for communities hosting natural resource development, including women and vulnerable groups, in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project empowers community members and local civil society to advance their rights, and access the benefits of natural resource development through awareness-raising, collaborative community projects and law reform. By training lawyers on advocacy and international best practices related to negotiation, contracts and employment in the natural resource sector, the project helps improve the transparency and accountability of laws and expand the benefits accruing from natural resource development to local communities. The project primarily benefits civil society, lawyers, government representatives and women and men in communities hosting natural resource development in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

This project aims to empower w...omen human rights defenders and organizations to effectively participate in post-conflict development and peace and security processes in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Philippines, South Sudan, and the West Bank. The project strengthens the ability of beneficiaries to use national laws and international human rights frameworks to defend and protect women's rights in post-conflict settings. Project activities include: (1) providing psychosocial and legal support to help women survivors recover from and seek justice for the physical and psychological violence they have experienced, (2) providing training to women human rights defenders and organizations and other key stakeholders on national and international human rights frameworks and gender-based analysis, as well as organizational strengthening, (3) developing or improving National Action Plans and the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) on women, peace and security, and (4) establishing South-South exchanges to facilitate networking, mutual learning and skills building. This project is expected to directly reach more than 35,000 beneficiaries (78% women and 22% men) in the five countries/territories, including approximately 9,500 women survivors of gender-based violence. In addition, it is expected to reach 200,000 (150,000 women and 50,000 men) indirect beneficiaries nationally, including extended families, community members, networks, government employees and other stakeholders, as well as another two million indirect beneficiaries internationally through networks, coalitions, and social media. This project fully supports th...e Ministerial priority of empowering women and girls and also contributes to the Ministerial commitment of contributing $650M over three years in support of SRHR initiatives. It also contributes to the Africa target. The project aims to use the power of the media and communications to challenge social norms and practices that limit women and girls' control over their bodies and reproductive decision making, and which also undermine the advancement of gender equality.

This project aims to work with... security sector actors (e.g. the South Sudanese army, other armed groups, and peacekeepers) and civil society organizations to prevent the use and recruitment of child soldiers in South Sudan. The project works with 1,200 members of the national armed forces and contributing peace keepers to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) increasing knowledge on child protection strategies, including the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence, (2) improving skills on reporting grave violations against children, and (3) working with community stakeholders to increase the protection of children through building awareness of underlying factors that contribute to making children vulnerable to being recruited and used as soldiers. The project aims to directly reach at least 1,200 troops and 80 trainers through the delivery of gender-responsive child protection training. The project is being implemented by Dalhousie University along with the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative.

FAMILY LAW REFORM TO CHALLENGE... GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: A RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED ADVOCACY PROJECT

|
Family Law Reform to Challenge... Gender-Based Violence: A Research and Knowledge-Based Advocacy Project
more
|
Although gender-based violence... (GBV) is endemic globally, some of the highest rates in the world are found in Muslim-majority countries where conservative interpretations of Islamic Family Law persist. Such interpretations often lead to and justify practices such as early child and forced marriage, loss of guardianship by the mother of her children, prohibition of women from initiating divorce, the practice of honour killing, and the right of parents and family members to control the bodies of their spouses, daughters, and female relatives, including the practice of female genital mutilation. As a result, any solution to GBV must address both legislation and cultural understanding if legal reform is to succeed. Such a solution must involve the promotion of moderate interpretations of Islamic Law, by women, women's groups, and other civil society organizations, to challenge the authority of fundamentalist religious authorities and others. This project aims to empower women by informing them about Islamic Family Law, and to provide more moderate interpretations of these laws to protect their human rights as well as to prevent and overcome GBV. This proposed research and advocacy project on GBV will be led by the Lebanon-based Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), building on its 15-year history of research and advocacy training on combating gender-based violence in more than 50 countries. The project seeks to (1) challenge GBV through research and the development of locally-led new knowledge on how to reform Family Law in Muslim-majority countries; (2) use the research as a basis for effective national advocacy against GBV; and (3) build a global advocacy network, the first of its kind, for those who experience GBV justified in the name of religion. The countries of focus will be Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Palestinian Territories, Morocco, Mauritania, Pakistan, Senegal, and India (where Muslims are a minority). WLP's wide-scale partnership with well-established organizations located in countries with Muslim majorities in the Global South and India will enable it to reach the widest number of beneficiaries and provide culturally specific, effective solutions for countering GBV. The organization's long history of work with international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank, will also allow it to effectively mobilize the international community in support of a global advocacy campaign against GBV.

Amplifying the Voices of Girls... and Boys in Early Child and Forced Marriage (ECFM)
more
|
Along these lines, each project promises success in meeting their individual objectives, however, a role and process for joining up the ECFM projects to consolidate and amplify their collective findings is currently missing.

This project aims to protect t...he human rights of vulnerable children in targeted communities in Afghanistan. It seeks to provide education stakeholders with fundamental skills, knowledge and strategies to ensure safe learning environments. The project also supports gender specific techniques that address child rights and the different child protection needs of girls and boys. Project activities include: (1) training teachers, children, families, school councils, communities and government officials to develop child-protection systems and promote children's rights at local, district, provincial and national levels in Afghanistan; (2) implementing a community-based child protection model by developing child protection referral systems, facilitating community outreach, and training community leaders on how to respond to identified cases; (3) supporting the establishment of safe, violence-free community centres in existing community structures for children and youth, with an emphasis on girls; (4) promoting initiatives that allow vulnerable children to benefit from recreation, educational play, and psychosocial support; and (5) training volunteers to run the centers and use child-to-child methodology to equip and educate children on how to protect themselves and advocate for their own protection.

The project aims to broaden an...d strengthen an enabling environment for the rights and protection of women, and to empower them through grass roots strategies in Afghanistan. It supports efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and promotes collaborative local and national civil society networks in order to influence and mainstream gender equality into government policy-making. Results are achieved through raising awareness and capacity development, as well as by providing enhanced service delivery and empowering women to take stronger roles in decision-making processes. Project activities include: (1) enabling 20 civil society organisations to map protection issues for women and provide grants for protection projects serving 2,000 community members; (2) developing protection action plans with relevant ministries and civil society organizations; (3) providing legal aid to 3,100 survivors of gender-based violence; (4) providing formal psychosocial counselling for 3,000 women; (5) training 180 female volunteers as community-based educators to raise awareness of gender-based violence and facilitate referrals to services; (6) providing income opportunities to 500 women and offering vocational apprenticeships to 600 women; and (7) reaching 160,000 community members through awareness and media sensitization on women's rights and empowerment issues, including targeted sensitization for 3,500 men. Overall, the project is expected to support 9,300 direct beneficiaries and up to 167,300 indirect beneficiaries (including women, men and children in targeted cities and provinces). Direct beneficiaries include survivors of gender-based violence, women in need of legal aid, peer counseling and psychosocial services, and women requiring basic education and vocational apprenticeships to further their socio-economic status. Also, 20 civil society organizations benefit from the project as they increase their capacity to implement community-protection-based programing in support of women and girls. The project aims to strengthen... Afghan civil society organizations to coordinate, advocate, protect and promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls. Support is provided to a membership-based organization of informal women workers, to deliver business support services and to advocate for women's economic empowerment. Community business centres are established to deliver skills development training sessions and workshops, and services for micro-businesses to women in local communities. It is expected that approximately 6,000 direct beneficiaries in four provinces will seize market opportunities and actively engage in community planning and decision making processes. Advocacy efforts of civil society organizations at the provincial and national levels reach out to wider communities of indirect beneficiaries. Men and boys also benefit from enhanced awareness and their roles as change agents.

The project aims to support Af...ghan women and girls to participate more effectively in decision making processes. It addresses gender-based violence by supporting stakeholders to strengthen the implementation of policies and programs, changing attitudes, and providing survivors of violence with enhanced access to support services and economic opportunity. The project also strengthens coordination among key women's organizations, in particular, members of the Afghan Women's Network, by increasing their capacity and collaboration around accountability, knowledge sharing, and joint advocacy related to women's rights and empowerment. Project activities include: (1) increasing awareness among 5,400 women and 2,700 men (including religious and political leaders) of the legal rights of women and girls, including the Elimination of Violence Against Women Law; (2) establishing and equipping nine district level consultation centers to provide legal, protection and referral services; (3) training district level law enforcement bodies on more effective provision of legal support; (4) increasing access to economic opportunities and support an enabling environment for women's economic empowerment; (5) increasing membership, knowledge sharing and management capacity of 125 organizations members of the Afghan Women's Network; and (6) increasing capacity of the Afghan Women's Network to develop joint accountability mechanisms. Overall, the project is expected to benefit 26,800 direct beneficiaries in 60 communities including women and girls, survivors of violence, men and boys, and religious and political leaders. Indirectly, the project is expected to benefit 3,500 individual members of the 125 women's organizations in the Afghan Women's Network. Similarly, the Afghan civil society organisations reached by the initiative's advocacy strategies indirectly benefit from the intended programming efforts, notably with regard to increased participation of women and girls in decision making. The project supports the prote...ction of rights of Afghan women and girls from gender-based violence. It strengthens Afghan civil society organizations to coordinate, advocate, protect and promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls. Programming includes economic empowerment of women activities aimed at expanding livelihood opportunities. The initiative aims to address both urgent and long-term needs of gender-based violence (GBV), through strengthening resilience and promoting a more supportive society. The capacity to engage and better support the rights of women is enhanced for members of Afghan civil society organizations, protection providers, religious leaders and women entrepreneurs, and relevant linkages are facilitated between civil society, policy makers and government actors. The project reach is approximately 13,000 direct beneficiaries and up to 627,000 indirect beneficiaries (including women and girls, men and boys in targeted provinces). Direct beneficiaries include teachers and schoolchildren, religious leaders, female entrepreneurs and protection providers.

This project supports the Inte...rnational Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in its work to prevent and reduce sexual violence in armed conflicts. Women and girls face increased vulnerability in situations of conflict and displacement, as rape and other forms of sexual violence may be used systematically as an act of reprisal and to create fear. The consequences are far reaching, affecting survivors not only physically but psychologically and socially. For this reason, ICRC has a special initiative to strengthen its response to sexual violence, with the intention of improving delivery of services, prevention of sexual violence, and improving the capacity of its staff to respond. The ICRC also works with States, weapons bearers, religious and traditional leaders, and communities to promote awareness of sexual violence, including awareness of International Humanitarian Law obligations prohibiting sexual violence in armed conflict. The ICRC has a unique role working in conflict zones, with access to areas inaccessible by many other organizations and with greater credibility in advocating for the protection of civilians, including vulnerable women and girls.

|
