This project aims to empower w...omen human rights defenders and organizations to effectively participate in post-conflict development and peace and security processes in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Philippines, South Sudan, and the West Bank. The project strengthens the ability of beneficiaries to use national laws and international human rights frameworks to defend and protect women's rights in post-conflict settings. Project activities include: (1) providing psychosocial and legal support to help women survivors recover from and seek justice for the physical and psychological violence they have experienced, (2) providing training to women human rights defenders and organizations and other key stakeholders on national and international human rights frameworks and gender-based analysis, as well as organizational strengthening, (3) developing or improving National Action Plans and the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) on women, peace and security, and (4) establishing South-South exchanges to facilitate networking, mutual learning and skills building. This project is expected to directly reach more than 35,000 beneficiaries (78% women and 22% men) in the five countries/territories, including approximately 9,500 women survivors of gender-based violence. In addition, it is expected to reach 200,000 (150,000 women and 50,000 men) indirect beneficiaries nationally, including extended families, community members, networks, government employees and other stakeholders, as well as another two million indirect beneficiaries internationally through networks, coalitions, and social media. IDRC's Governance and Justice ...program is supporting exploratory research on the economic costs of gender-based violence (GBV) to build knowledge for greater impact and communicate results. Specific attention will be paid to creating safer spaces free from violence and insecurity, and empowering vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls. The purpose of this project is to identify knowledge gaps in assessing the diverse, and often unstudied, economic costs stemming from various forms of violence. Data availability on GBV is growing, but important gaps remain that impede cross-country comparisons and understanding of comprehensive socio-economic costs across many dimensions of empowerment (e.g. agency, self-esteem, health, economic status, etc.), and across sectors (e.g. public and private). This project will support a review of existing global research and highlight gaps that can inform investments in violence prevention. A workshop with expert researchers and practitioners working in this field will be organized to discuss and communicate findings, explore partnership opportunities, and identify a research agenda to develop specific projects.

EMPOWERING WOMEN TO OVERCOME F...ACTORS OF STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE IN LATIN AMERICA

Empowering women to overcome f...actors of structural violence in Latin America

Throughout the developing worl...d, young men and women face high unemployment coupled with strong feelings of dissatisfaction with their quality of life in contexts of weak governance and institutions, increased political instability, and growing state authoritarianism — factors that render societies vulnerable and play a role in radicalization. Predominant strategies to counter these phenomena remain state-centered, with limited participation of civil society stakeholders. Populations who suffer most from this violence, insecurity, and lack of civic engagement, such as young men and women, continue to be largely excluded from participating in policy and governance related decisions. But youth are active in an array of movements associated with emerging social, economic, cultural, and political issues. In Latin America, one dimension of violence is associated with the obstacles women face when seeking to actively participate in public affairs. This type of political violence hinders the possibility of women to influence and/or directly act on policies or actions that could potentially solve other dimensions of violence such as physical, racial, or sexual. Women and other gender minorities within the LGBTI community face a double challenge when addressing these issues, because political representation is simultaneously limited by discriminatory barriers and by the collapse of the traditional structures of political representation, such as political parties.Supported by Asuntos del Sur, a think tank based in Argentina, this project aims to test and refine an approach that builds the leadership capacities of young women in Latin America, especially in the areas of sexual and gender-based violence. The aim is to develop monitoring and evaluation capacities and tools within the organization to test their approach in terms of efficiency, sustainability, and impact. It will consist of a research agenda aimed at identifying, understanding, and systematizing innovative political processes that focus on eradicating structural factors of violence against women; pursuing strategies that increase the empowerment of young women; nurturing regional innovation by disseminating experiences, tools, and concepts learned; and by participating in regional networks such as the Organization of American States. This project is part of a cluster of projects, Giving youth a voice: promoting spaces for civic engagement, inclusion, and violence reduction in South Asia and Latin America , launched in June 2017.

ADDRESSING TEEN PREGNANCY AND ...EARLY MARRIAGE IN THE GAMBIA
more
|
Addressing Teen Pregnancy and ...Early Marriage in The Gambia
more
|
The persistent high rates of e...arly marriage below the age of 18 is a global concern. Over the last two decades, early marriage in The Gambia declined significantly (from 58% to 30%), however this rate is still high. The reasons for the decline and continuing practice of early marriage, despite the 2010 National Child Protection Strategy Plan, are not well understood. Very few studies have been conducted to find out what and how local factors influence decisions about child marriage in rural Gambian communities. The overall aim of this study is to determine the factors that either perpetuate or lead to a decline in or early marriage. The information generated will be used to design a relevant package of interventions that will be tested in Lower Badibu District, the second poorest region in the country. This study will involve a cross-sectional household survey with a sample of 915 respondents aged 10 years and above, stratified by ethnicity and age. The research team will convene 28 focus group discussions within each of the four ethnic groups for seven categories of respondents defined by age and sex and key informant interviews with 173 community-based decision makers will also be conducted. The expected outcome of this project will be changes in knowledge of and attitudes towards early marriage and its prevention at the individual and community levels following the implementation of the package of interventions. The lessons learned will be used to identify factors that can facilitate or hinder the scaling up of the interventions to other communities to reduce the prevalence of early marriage in The Gambia. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.

EMPOWERING WOMEN TO OVERCOME F...ACTORS OF STRUCTURAL VIOLENCE IN LATIN AMERICA
more
|
Empowering women to overcome f...actors of structural violence in Latin America
more
|
It will consist of a research agenda aimed at identifying, understanding, and systematizing innovative political processes that focus on eradicating structural factors of violence against women, pursuing strategies that increase the empowerment of young women, nurturing regional innovation by disseminating experiences, tools, and concepts learned, and by participating in regional networks such as the Organization of American States. This project is part of a cluster of projects, Giving youth a voice: promoting spaces for civic engagement, inclusion, and violence reduction in South Asia and Latin America, launched in June 2017.

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF SEXUA...L AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE SERVICES FOR HAITIAN WOMEN AND GIRLS
more
|
Improving the quality of sexua...l and gender-based violence services for Haitian women and girls
more
|
Sexual and gender-based violen...ce (SGBV) against girls and women is a serious health and human rights concern in Haiti. Most women who suffer from this type of violence are among the most underserved and at-risk members of society. This means they lack access to essential supports and services, including avenues to seek justice. Accessing the range of necessary services is challenged by limited resources, economic insecurity, prevalent social norms and gender power imbalances, as well as a lack of political will. This project will work with communities, government and civil society organizations to provide integrated and improved services (health, social and legal) to victims of SGBV. The project will have a specific focus on adolescent girls because they are particularly vulnerable to SGBV. Building on lessons from three years of implementing an integrated multisectoral intervention to address SGBV in the Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite departments in Haiti, this project aims to document the prevalence of SGBV through high-quality data that will be made available for decision-makers. It also focuses on improving the timeliness, quality and accessibility of multisectoral SGBV supports by examining both supply-side (providers) and demand-side (users) perspectives on the quality of services. Finally, the project will assess the validity and effectiveness of multi-sectoral approaches to addressing SGBV. Gender and costing analyses are integrated across these objectives to enrich the utility and replicability of the findings. Implemented with the collaboration of Zanmi Lasante, or Partners in Health, a Haitian non-governmental organization providing health services to the poor, this project will work alongside the community, government representatives, Haitian academe and civil society to make concrete contributions to theory and practice on how to design and evaluate a multi-pronged and multi-sectoral SGBV intervention in Haiti. Capacity strengthening activities include targeted training, as well as support to Haitian-based graduate students embarking on studies related to this project. The project will work in close collaboration with another IDRC-supported project that focuses on strengthening the enabling environment for feminist research, gender studies and addressing issues of women's rights in Haiti.

The project aims to prevent ch...ildren and youth from undertaking unaccompanied migration from two communities in Honduras where poverty and widespread violence prevail. The project is designed to help protect vulnerable young adolescents (between the age of 10 and 14) from violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, and to increase economic opportunities for older adolescents (between the age of 15 and 19) who are at-risk of migrating, with a particular focus on girls. Project activities include: (1) creating local clubs for adolescents where social, emotional competencies and self-protection training and awareness activities are offered, (2) providing training for schools, communities and families on gender equality, including positive and equitable relationships, (3) providing market-oriented vocational and entrepreneurship training and developing transferrable life skills for older adolescents, including self-control, self-esteem, motivation and job-seeking skills, (4) sharing the project's successes and lessons learned with governments and civil society to contribute to the design of gender-sensitive policies and programs that prevent the unaccompanied migration of girls, boys and adolescents.

FAMILY LAW REFORM TO CHALLENGE... GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: A RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED ADVOCACY PROJECT
more
|
Family Law Reform to Challenge... Gender-Based Violence: A Research and Knowledge-Based Advocacy Project
more
|
Although gender-based violence... (GBV) is endemic globally, some of the highest rates in the world are found in Muslim-majority countries where conservative interpretations of Islamic Family Law persist. Such interpretations often lead to and justify practices such as early child and forced marriage, loss of guardianship by the mother of her children, prohibition of women from initiating divorce, the practice of honour killing, and the right of parents and family members to control the bodies of their spouses, daughters, and female relatives, including the practice of female genital mutilation. As a result, any solution to GBV must address both legislation and cultural understanding if legal reform is to succeed. Such a solution must involve the promotion of moderate interpretations of Islamic Law, by women, women's groups, and other civil society organizations, to challenge the authority of fundamentalist religious authorities and others. This project aims to empower women by informing them about Islamic Family Law, and to provide more moderate interpretations of these laws to protect their human rights as well as to prevent and overcome GBV. This proposed research and advocacy project on GBV will be led by the Lebanon-based Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), building on its 15-year history of research and advocacy training on combating gender-based violence in more than 50 countries. The project seeks to (1) challenge GBV through research and the development of locally-led new knowledge on how to reform Family Law in Muslim-majority countries; (2) use the research as a basis for effective national advocacy against GBV; and (3) build a global advocacy network, the first of its kind, for those who experience GBV justified in the name of religion. The countries of focus will be Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Palestinian Territories, Morocco, Mauritania, Pakistan, Senegal, and India (where Muslims are a minority). WLP's wide-scale partnership with well-established organizations located in countries with Muslim majorities in the Global South and India will enable it to reach the widest number of beneficiaries and provide culturally specific, effective solutions for countering GBV. The organization's long history of work with international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank, will also allow it to effectively mobilize the international community in support of a global advocacy campaign against GBV.

kNOw Fear: Making Rural Public... Spaces Safe for Women and Girls
more
|
Despite constitutional guarant...ees, violence both within and outside the home is an ever-present threat and an everyday reality for a large majority of women and girls across India. In recent years, greater attention to incidents of violence against women in urban areas has produced new evidence about different forms of violence there. However, similar understanding of and evidence on the scale and different forms of violence against women in public spaces in rural areas does not exist. Acute violence against women and girls in rural areas has remained unaddressed, receiving scant policy attention. This project proposes to fill this gap by developing and validating an innovative evidence-informed model, kNOw Fear, to foster freedom from violence and safety for women and girls in rural public spaces in India. It will identify specific pathways of gender-based violence prevention and deliver an intervention model where both young women and men will come together to change attitudes, transform gender-regressive norms and practices, and contribute to making local governance institutions accountable to women's safety in rural public spaces. The project will concurrently build capacities of the elected members of local governance bodies, the Panchayati Raj Institutions, who are constitutionally mandated to ensure social justice and equitable development. The intention is to encourage them to respond to violence against women and girls, thereby positioning public safety for women and girls as a critical component of rural local governance. kNOw Fear will be led by the International Centre for Research on Women in collaboration with the Society for Women's Action and Training Initiatives (SWATI) and SETU Abhiyan, a group of development organizations in Kutch, India.

The project will concurrently build capacities of the elected members of local governance bodies, the Panchayati Raj Institutions, who are constitutionally mandated to ensure social justice and equitable development. The intention is to encourage them to respond to violence against women and girls, thereby positioning public safety for women and girls as a critical component of rural local governance. kNOw Fear will be led by the International Centre for Research on Women in collaboration with the Society for Women's Action and Training Initiatives (SWATI) and SETU Abhiyan, a group of development organizations in Kutch, India.

|
|

This project aims to support w...omen's economic empowerment in Jordan, which shows some of the lowest rates of women's political and economic participation in the Middle East Region. The project fosters entrepreneurship among school girls and supports women-led business start-ups. It also seeks to address high unemployment rates by improving the enabling environment and promoting a culture of entrepreneurship for Jordanian women in impoverished areas. Project activities include: (1) developing a business incubator for women that includes training, mentoring, advisory services and networking, (2) developing entrepreneurial module training to be delivered throughout Jordan (women entrepreneurs are targeted in this training in both the formal and informal sectors), (3) delivering a Leaders and Entrepreneurs program which includes a national competition and after-school clubs for girls throughout Jordan (school boys are also engaged and sensitized through various initiatives), and (4) sensitizing and building the capacity of decision-makers and key women and men stakeholders (from government, private sector, academia and civil society) to integrate women's employment and entrepreneurial needs.
