This project is aligned with C...anada`s Feminist International Assistance Policy, more specifically, promoting women's economic empowerment and eliminating sexual and gender based violence. The project is focused on addressing the constraints which limit the ability of East African women to participate in economic activities and cross-border trade. The project will address: (i) increased access to markets and trade-related services for women traders; (ii) improved policy, legal, institutional and regulatory environment for strengthening the implementation of existing regional gender frameworks; and (iii) reduction in the incidences of violence against women, through increased awareness of rights and obligations, increased participation of women in decision-making, sensitisation of border officials on gender, adoption of gender sensitive cross border trade charters, establishment of safe working spaces for women and developing and operationalizing a reporting mechanism on Violence Against Women (VAW)./Ce projet est en ligne avec la politique d'aide internationale féministe du Canada, plus particulièrement à la promotion de l'autonomisation économique des femmes et à l'élimination de la violence sexuelle et sexiste.

Strengthening the Response to ...Gender-Based Violence in Mongolia Project will deliver on Canada's commitment to support sexual and reproductive health and rights, including gender based violence. SRHR is not only a health issue, but a human rights and gender equality issue. Violations of sexual and reproductive rights, particularly for women and girls, are often deeply ingrained in societal values pertaining to women's sexuality and gender norms.Strengthening the Response to Gender-Based Violence in Mongolia Project aims to empower survivors of domestic violence, particularly women and girls, by helping them access justice, claim their rights, and play an active role in advocating against domestic violence crimes./TBC

CREATING SAFER SPACES FOR YOUN...G WOMEN IN GREATER CAIRO SLUMS
more
|
Creating safer spaces for youn...g women in greater Cairo slums
more
|
In Egypt, as in many countries... in the Middle East and North Africa, young women are exposed to several types of gender-based violence. A 2014 survey of young people in Egypt showed that almost 40% of women (aged 13-35) were subjected to some form of verbal or physical sexual harassment on the streets and on public transportation in Egypt. The difference in occurrence in slum areas (61.6%) versus urban formal areas (47.7%) and rural parts (32.6%) of the country is also staggering. Sexual harassment, sexual violence, or fear of exposure to such forms of gender-based violence have multidimensional impacts on women and girls whether physical, sexual, or mental, including restrictions on their mobility within public spaces. This project will investigate the drivers of, and change in exposure to, sexual violence by young women in public places, and explore attitudes towards different forms of gender-based violence among youth. Uniquely focusing on the slums of greater Cairo, the aim is to understand the current responses of women when being subjected to such incidents and how it affects their major life transitions to adulthood, including access to education and participation in the labour force. Building on the success of an ongoing IDRC-funded project, Harassmap, this project will further document coping strategies that women use to resist sexual violence and how community resources can be used to empower women to overcome such violence. The research will employ quantitative and qualitative methods as well as a mapping exercise, which helps visualize safe and unsafe spaces in communities for different gender and age groups. Proposed interventions based on research findings and engagement with relevant stakeholders will be designed with a focus on creating safer and more inclusive spaces for young women, promoting their resilience and empowering all community members to fight sexual violence. All project activities will be geared toward engaging policymakers and youth stakeholders throughout the project at the local community level and nationally.

The project contributes to red...ucing sexual and gender-based violence against women, especially indigenous women in the Departments of Alta Verapaz, Sololá and Chimaltenango and strengthens the poorest and most vulnerable's access to justice. Gender-based violence has reached epidemic levels in Guatemala as patterns of violence against women committed during the 36-year internal armed conflict have continued, are seen as normal and are often tolerated. A majority of the victims are Indigenous women and girls. The project responds to Canada's commitment to women's and girls' rights by providing legal, psychological and social services; building the capacity of justice system actors through training and litigation of sexual violence cases with national impact; and by raising public awareness on gender-based violence./ À venir

This grant is Canada's long-te...rm institutional support to the United Nations Development Programme's multi-donor trust fund in support of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). It contributes to increasing the rule of law, thereby reducing impunity and improving access to rights, especially for women and Indigenous communities. To do so, CICIG seeks to strengthen Guatemala's capacity to conduct gender-sensitive criminal investigations, prosecute State infiltrated organized crime, and propose judicial and institutional reforms./Cette subvention constitue l'appui institutionnel à long terme du Canada au fonds fiduciaire multidonateurs du Programme des Nations Unies pour le développement afin d'appuyer la Commission internationale contre l'impunité au Guatemala (CICIG).

This initiative supports the e...nhancement of gender equality human rights programming within the Guatemala Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Women and girls are subject to some of the cruelest human rights violations and yet many organizations specialized in human rights promotion and protection are not prepared to deal with these gender-specific crimes. Project activities include: (1) supporting policy development for and direct accompaniment of women human rights defenders, (2) supporting victims of sexual and gender-based violence, (3) denouncing discrimination especially related to women's economic, social and cultural rights, and (4) strengthening gender-sensitive justice systems through strategic litigation.

This project aims to advance g...ender equality and the empowerment of women and girls by supporting local organizations that advance women's rights in Haiti. It is building the capacity of local women's rights organizations to provide services to their constituents; help women to know and claim their rights; advocate for gender equality; and empower women and girls. The project reflects growing international evidence of the critical role that local women's rights and feminist organizations play in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.Project activities include the provision of: (1) multi-year funding to selected local women's rights organizations; (2) targeted capacity building to organizations selected for multi-year funding; (3) support to strengthen networks and alliances between women's rights organizations; and (4) small, short-term funding to local women's rights organizations and networks to pilot innovative ideas and approaches, and to respond quickly to unforeseen events and opportunities. This project aims to enable women's organizations in Haiti to improve the management of their programs, increase the quality of services offered and work to restore strong support networks that directly benefit more than 3,000 women and girls and indirectly to more than 130,000 women and girls. This project is part of Canada's commitment to support local women's rights organizations in developing countries./Ce projet vise l'avancement de l'égalité des genres et de l'autonomisation des femmes et des filles en appuyant les organisations locales qui font la promotion des droits des femmes en Haïti. The justice sector in Honduras... faces serious structural challenges, the main victims of which are the most vulnerable, including women, children, Indigenous and Afro-Honduran peoples, sexual minorities, migrants and human rights defenders. These people face significant barriers to accessing justice, have very little legal recourse to defend their rights, and the few lawyers who work on defending human rights cases require more support. To this end, this project aims to increase the access to justice of vulnerable populations by training and accompanying lawyers and civil society organizations to actively participate in legal and democratic processes that help reduce impunity and improve the rule of law in Honduras.

This project aims to strengthe...n the justice system's response to high rates of gender-based crimes in Honduras, including femicides and crimes against LGBTQ2 persons, in eight departments in the country with the highest reported incidence of these offences. The goal is to improve investigations and enhance the prosecution of gender-based crimes through better preparation and argumentation of legal cases and support to and protection of victims. Project activities include: (1) providing training and technical assistance to investigators, prosecutors and judges on investigation and case management techniques, (2) developing a quality control system for investigations of sexual and gender-based violence, (3) developing a system to monitor the progress and outcomes of all offences reported to the Attorney General's Office, (4) supporting existing pilot initiatives like the use of video conferencing for testimony to protect the identity of victims and prevent re-victimization, and the use of DNA to enhance the effectiveness of evidence, (5) strengthening government and civil society support structures for victims of gender-based violence.

CHALLENGING FORCED MARRIAGE: B...UILDING THE DEFENCE AND SUPPORT SYSTEM
more
|
Challenging Forced Marriage: B...uilding the Defence and Support System
more
|
Forced marriage violates the p...rinciples of personal freedom and individual autonomy. It is viewed as a human rights violation under international human rights law. This project will generate evidence that will help combat forced marriage in India on two key issues: shelters for women resisting forced marriage and a law to enable civil marriages.Forced marriages and women's well-beingThe Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is the cornerstone of international human rights law, states that marriage should be entered only with the free and full consent of both spouses. Forced marriage violates the rights of men and women, but it has an especially complex effect on women's lives. Forced marriages include child marriage, where the parties are not seen as capable of giving informed consent.Women who are forced into marriage face greater disadvantages in patriarchal societies that discriminate against women. Forced marriage is used as a tool to control women's sexuality and mobility, both physical and social. Forced marriages are especially prevalent in India.Research to enhance women's opportunitiesIn India, marriage laws differ for different religions. The civil law for marriage is the Special Marriage Act, which allows parties of different religions to marry without changing their religion. It requires explicit consent of both partners to marry. Consent remains central to the marriage law; however, not all religious laws require both partners' explicit consent to marry. The Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiatives proposes to analyze India's state mechanisms to create a support system for women who resist forced marriage and exercise the right to choice. It will bridge the knowledge gap about existing state mechanisms to deal with cases of forced marriage and to ensure that states are accountable for a system that protects women's rights and liberties. The project will provide research to feed into evidence-based interventions and an action plan for dealing with forced marriage in India.Women empowered to exercise their rightsThe research team will investigate 12 shelter homes in three Indian states: Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Haryana. The project aims to -enhance young women's opportunities for complete social and economic development -increase the social acceptability of marriages of choice-enhance women's ability to resist forced marriage -improve the state's responsibility to protect women who face violence for exercising their right to choice in marriage and other sexual relationships

KNOW VIOLENCE IN CHILDHOOD –... INDIA: ADVOCACY, COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA ENGAGEMENT

|
Know Violence in Childhood –... India: Advocacy, communication and media engagement
more
|
Know Violence in Childhood (KV...IC) is a global learning and advocacy initiative to stimulate coordinated action to end violence in childhood. It leverages available information about the prevalence of violence during childhood and develops strategies that help prevent such violence. As part of this global initiative, a multi-donor India initiative is being launched that will lead to the development of evidence-based guidance for action plans to prevent violence in childhood in at least two states in India. This initiative has brought diverse stakeholders and partners in India together. Support from IDRC will supplement and complement commitments from other partners for this program, such as the American Jewish World Service, Oak Foundation, South Asian Initiative to End Violence Against Children (SAIEVAC), and state governments in the states of Jharkhand and Haryana. The initiative builds upon the legacy of a violence prevention initiative called Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS) that was piloted in collaboration with the Jharkhand government and local organizations from 2013–16.The current phase of the initiative will test policies and strategies that can be adapted to inform policymakers through strong evidence about the scale and nature of violence in childhood; support state governments with actionable inputs that can be integrated in strategies to prevent violence in childhood; and advocate findings from the programmatic work more widely. Among the activities are mapping and gap analysis of existing state-level institutions, initiatives, and mechanisms that address violence in childhood in Haryana and Jharkhand; developing a media communication and advocacy strategy for changing norms and generating greater commitment and social and political will to address violence in childhood; and informing public debates on ending violence in childhood. IDRC's support will specifically contribute to communicating the findings through a strong media strategy that will inform public debates and state action.IDRC has led a range of projects on sexual and gender-based violence. By partnering with the Washington-based International Centre for Research on Women in this initiative, IDRC will help to create space for linking the lessons learned from previous work to the new initiative and facilitate a wider coalition of researchers and practitioners working towards ending violence against both women and children.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT IN ADDRESSING... VIOLENT EXTREMISM AND GENDER VIOLENCE THROUGH EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS IN KENYA AND TANZANIA

|
Youth engagement in addressing... violent extremism and gender violence through early warning systems in Kenya and Tanzania
more
|
This project will investigate ...how a community security mechanism known as Nyumba Kumi (which comprises ten households per cell) used in Kenya and Tanzania might foster safer spaces for youth and women to participate in efforts to counter violent extremism and gender violence. Through a comparative analysis of the operationalization of Nyumba Kumi in these two countries, this study will establish how different contexts influence implementation and explore best practices that could be applied in other parts of Africa. The methodology includes case study approaches to examine the opportunities for strengthening youth engagement in the linkages between informal mechanisms, early warning systems, and prevention of violent extremism. It will examine how a community-led security mechanism can provide a platform for promoting the interface between youth, communities, policymakers and law enforcers, and it will promote the leadership role of youth and women in addressing governance challenges facing their communities. The project aims to transform the attitudes and behaviours of communities, policymakers and law enforcers so that they embrace and promote community security mechanisms as tools and platforms for strengthening youth engagement in the prevention of violent extremism and creation of safer spaces. Ultimately, the project will inform the development of evidence-based policies and will influence practices by security actors and other stakeholders on the importance of active youth engagement and participation of youths in community security, policing, and early warning processes. The University of Dar-Es-Salaam will lead this project in Tanzania, and will collaborate with researchers from Catholic University in East Africa for the Kenya component. Using a participatory approach, researchers will target youths (male and female), government officials, religious leaders, political elites and non-state actors involved in community policing and promotion of security.

The project, implemented by th...e Canadian Bar Association (CBA), aims to increase sustainable economic growth for communities hosting natural resource development, including women and vulnerable groups, in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project empowers community members and local civil society to advance their rights, and access the benefits of natural resource development through awareness-raising, collaborative community projects and law reform. By training lawyers on advocacy and international best practices related to negotiation, contracts and employment in the natural resource sector, the project helps improve the transparency and accountability of laws and expand the benefits accruing from natural resource development to local communities.

This project aims to help Leba...nese authorities provide basic security and justice services in host communities. Lebanese municipalities are the primary line of response to the Syrian refugee crisis despite being very under-resourced to provide the services they are expected to deliver. In host communities, many people rely on informal mechanisms to resolve conflict, and those with little social capital, such as women, youth, and refugees may avoid claiming their rights altogether, leaving grievances unaddressed. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the municipal police force; (2) developing an early warning and early response mechanism to monitor and respond to tensions in host communities; and (3) providing legal aid to vulnerable people, especially women. The project also promotes measures to increase the number of female municipal police officers and sensitize both the judicial and municipal police to issues of violence against women.
