REDUCTION OF GENDER AND INSTIT...UTIONAL VIOLENCE AGAINST MESOAMERICAN MIGRANT WOMEN

Reduction of Gender and Instit...utional Violence against Mesoamerican Migrant Women
more
|
Six out of ten Central America...n women on their way through Mexico are victims of sexual violence, according to reports from Amnesty International. Migrants, particularly women and girls, suffer from multiple forms of violence during their journeys northward. The perpetrators of violence against them range from criminals to government authorities to their intimate partners. However, there is still no strong evidence base on this phenomenon. Migrant women not only lack systems to report violence against them, they are also being threatened and intimidated. This project seeks to understand what forms of violence against migrant women are being perpetrated by whom, where, how, and when, and to identify effective policies and practices to counteract and prevent these incidents. It will examine the conditions that result in the displacement of women, children, and adolescents in Guatemala and the south of Mexico, particularly those due to territorial control and institutional violence under the guise of immigration control. It will also look at what risks women face and how they are protected from violence. Researchers based in local human rights organizations will work closely with affected women and the organizations that serve them in the implementation of this project. The research will reflect the experiences of Mesoamerican migrant and refugee women and will provide the basis for public policy recommendations to protect their rights and safety. This project will also strengthen the research skills and victim support services of the participating organizations and institutions in Guatemala and Mexico. These include the Associación Equipo de Estudios Comunitarios y Acción Psicosocial (Association of Community Studies and Psychosocial Action Team) in Guatemala, Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Matías de Córdova A.C (Fray Matias Centre for Human Rights of Cordova) in Mexico, and the Voces Mesoamericanas, Acción con Pueblos Migrantes, Asociación Civil (Mesoamerican Voices, Action with Migrant People, Civil Association) in Mexico.

FAMILY LAW REFORM TO CHALLENGE... GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: A RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED ADVOCACY PROJECT
more
|
Family Law Reform to Challenge... Gender-Based Violence: A Research and Knowledge-Based Advocacy Project
more
|
Although gender-based violence... (GBV) is endemic globally, some of the highest rates in the world are found in Muslim-majority countries where conservative interpretations of Islamic Family Law persist. Such interpretations often lead to and justify practices such as early child and forced marriage, loss of guardianship by the mother of her children, prohibition of women from initiating divorce, the practice of honour killing, and the right of parents and family members to control the bodies of their spouses, daughters, and female relatives, including the practice of female genital mutilation. As a result, any solution to GBV must address both legislation and cultural understanding if legal reform is to succeed. Such a solution must involve the promotion of moderate interpretations of Islamic Law, by women, women's groups, and other civil society organizations, to challenge the authority of fundamentalist religious authorities and others. This project aims to empower women by informing them about Islamic Family Law, and to provide more moderate interpretations of these laws to protect their human rights as well as to prevent and overcome GBV. This proposed research and advocacy project on GBV will be led by the Lebanon-based Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), building on its 15-year history of research and advocacy training on combating gender-based violence in more than 50 countries. The project seeks to (1) challenge GBV through research and the development of locally-led new knowledge on how to reform Family Law in Muslim-majority countries; (2) use the research as a basis for effective national advocacy against GBV; and (3) build a global advocacy network, the first of its kind, for those who experience GBV justified in the name of religion. The countries of focus will be Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Palestinian Territories, Morocco, Mauritania, Pakistan, Senegal, and India (where Muslims are a minority). WLP's wide-scale partnership with well-established organizations located in countries with Muslim majorities in the Global South and India will enable it to reach the widest number of beneficiaries and provide culturally specific, effective solutions for countering GBV. The organization's long history of work with international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank, will also allow it to effectively mobilize the international community in support of a global advocacy campaign against GBV.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION, ACCESS TO... JUSTICE, AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN LATIN AMERICA

Violence Prevention, Access to... Justice, and Economic Empowerment of Women in Latin America
more
|
This project will identify and... analyze economic opportunity policies and practices that aim to support women in Latin America by preventing violence, increasing access to justice, and empowering them economically. Women and inequality in Latin America Women's economic empowerment and the reduction of violence against women have become urgent priorities in the political and social agendas of Latin American countries. This is particularly true given the deep socio-economic inequalities and the alarmingly high levels of violence that women face. These problems are deeply rooted. They need complex policy approaches and practices. Economic opportunities and violence Governments have increasingly introduced special programs and policies to increase women's economic opportunities and to prevent violence against women. Researchers are gathering knowledge on what works and what does not work to address the issues. There is a huge evidence gap regarding the complex relationship between economic empowerment and the reduction of violence against women. Although governments, international aid organizations, and civil society actors believe that economic opportunity programs are effective at reducing violence against women, there is no solid evidence base for this causal link. It is important to understand and analyze whether economic projects, particularly those that claim to prevent violence against women, result in new forms of violence. Solutions to empower women, reduce violence Researchers will identify and analyze interventions in Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. They will assess the impact of efforts on: -preventing violence against women -reducing victimization -improving women's access to justice The results will guide governments, civil society organizations, and international cooperation agencies as they develop and implement policies and programs.

This regional project aims to ...increase protection and respect for the physical and moral integrity of girls and young women in the Great Lakes region. The project is divided into three components: (1) the development and implementation of protocols for assisting victims; (2) community awareness-raising through education, training, and political dialogue in order to promote a change in the way victims are perceived and treated; (3) support for the Coalition of Collectives of Associations Working for the Advancement of Women in the Great Lakes Region (COCAFEM/GL). COCAFEM/GL is a network of 11 collectives of women's organizations from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. The network brings together the associations with the most experience in combatting violence towards girls and young women in the region. The goal of this project is for COCAFEM/GL to become recognized nationally, regionally, and internationally for its influence in the fight against sexual violence. This component represents the second part of CIDA's contribution to the project, which is worth $13.5 million in total. The activities continuing in this component were initiated in component number A033944-001 (Combatting Violence Against Girls and Young Women in the Great Lakes Region - I).

This grant represents Canada's... institutional support to the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC). The SRSG-SVC uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. The SRSG-SVC serves as the United Nations' spokesperson and political advocate on conflict-related sexual violence. The SRSG-SVC works to catalyse political will and transform it into concrete actions to address and prevent conflict-related sexual violence at the country level. The six priorities of the SRSG-SVC are: (1) to end impunity for sexual violence in conflict by assisting national authorities to strengthen criminal accountability, responsiveness to survivors and judicial capacity; (2) the protection and empowerment of civilians who face sexual violence in conflict, in particular, women and girls who are targeted disproportionately by this crime; (3) to mobilize political ownership by fostering government engagement in developing and implementing strategies to combat sexual violence; (4) to increase recognition of rape as a tactic and consequence of war through awareness-raising activities at the international and country levels; (5) to harmonise the UN's response by leading UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict, a network of focal points from 13 UN agencies that amplify programming and advocacy on this issue in the wider UN agenda; and, (6) to emphasize greater national ownership.

This project demonstrates Cana...dian commitment to protecting vulnerable children in Afghanistan. It is being implemented by War Child Canada (WCC) and will provide education stakeholders with fundamental skills, knowledge and strategies to ensure safe learning environments. The project will train teachers, children, families, school councils, communities and government officials to develop child-protection systems and promote children's rights at local, district, provincial and national levels in Afghanistan. The project will implement a community-based child protection model by developing child protection referral systems, facilitating community outreach, and training community leaders on how to respond to identified cases. It will establish safe, violence-free community centres for children and youth, with an emphasis on girls. Vulnerable children will benefit from recreation, educational play, and psychosocial support. WCC will train volunteers to run the centers and use child-to-child methodology to equip and educate children on how to protect themselves and advocate for their own protection. Gender specific techniques will be used to address child rights and the different child protection needs of girls and boys. The centres will be established in existing community structures./Ce projet témoigne de l'engagement du Canada à protéger les enfants vulnérables en Afghanistan.

The project aims to broaden an...d strengthen the enabling environment for rights and protection, and empower women through grass roots strategies in Afghanistan. It supports efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Law on the Elimination of Violence against Women and promotes collaborative local and national civil society networks in order to influence and mainstream gender equality into government policy-making. Results are achieved through raising awareness, capacity development as well as enhanced service delivery and through empowering women to take stronger roles in decision making processes.Project activities include: (1) enabling 20 civil society organisations to map protection issues for women and provide grants for protection projects serving 2,000 community members; (2) developing Protection Action Plans with relevant ministries and civil society organisations; (3) providing legal aid to 3,100 survivors of gender-based violence; (4) providing formal psychosocial counselling for 3,000 women; (5) training 180 female volunteers as community-based educators to raise awareness of gender-based violence and facilitate referrals to services; (6) providing income opportunities to 500 women and offer vocational apprenticeships to 600 women; and (7) reaching 160,000 community members through awareness and media sensitization on women's rights and empowerment issues, including targeted sensitization of 3,500 men.Overall, the project is expected to benefit 9,300 direct beneficiaries and up to 167,300 indirect beneficiaries (including women, men and children in targeted cities and provinces). Direct beneficiaries include survivors of gender-based violence, women in need of legal aid, peer counseling and psychosocial services, and women requiring basic education and vocational apprenticeships to further their socio-economic status.

The project aims to strengthen... Afghan civil society organizations to coordinate, advocate, protect and promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls. Support is provided to a membership-based organization of informal women workers, to deliver business support services and to advocate for women's economic empowerment. Community business centres are established to deliver skills development training sessions and workshops, and services for micro-businesses to women in local communities. It is expected that approximately 6,000 direct beneficiaries in four provinces will seize market opportunities and actively engage in community planning and decision making processes. Advocacy efforts of civil society organizations at the provincial and national levels reach out to wider communities of indirect beneficiaries.

This project aims to: (1) prov...ide access to justice for women and girls who have petitioned the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to resolve violations of their rights, and (2) help member states of the IACHR meet their obligations to prevent, protect, investigate and act to correct the historical and structural discrimination, gender inequality and violence against women and girls in Latin America and the Caribbean. The project supports the IACHR in its work to address petitions, cases and requests of precautionary measures (rapid response in situations where there is an imminent risk of irreparable harm) related to discrimination and violence against women and girls. The project also supports IACHR member states in their efforts to meet regional standards (legal decisions and case law interpretations on state obligations to comply with commitments under the American Human Rights Convention and the Organization of American States Charter) and promote structural changes aimed at preventing violence against women and girls. Project activities include: (1) providing training for beneficiaries and stakeholders (public officials, women and girls), (2) holding public hearings with petitioners, victims and states, (3) organizing working meetings with stakeholders and members of the IACHR, and (4) providing states with guidance on applying IACHR recommendations and assisting states to incorporate them into domestic law. PREVENTING EARLY MARRIAGE IN U...RBAN POOR SETTLEMENTS IN BANGLADESH
more
|
Preventing early marriage in u...rban poor settlements in Bangladesh
more
|
Child marriage among girls is ...most common in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, with Bangladesh having the highest rate of marriage involving girls under age 15. Sixty-four percent of Bangladeshi girls are married before the age of 18, with the median age for a first marriage at 16.4. Studies indicate lack of education and poverty as drivers for early marriage in urban Bangladesh. Uneducated adolescent girls are at higher risk of marrying five years earlier than those with secondary or higher education. Eighty-one percent of girls from households with the lowest income marry before age 18, as compared with 56 percent from households with the highest income. In urban slums, where a large population of poor and uneducated adolescent girls resides, the issue of early marriage is more acute when compared with data for a similar age group from urban non-slum areas. Pervasive violence, extreme poverty and absence of basic services in urban slums contribute to early child marriage. Kidnapping, land grabbing, extortion, sexual harassment and assault, often committed by local residents, are all common. At the same time, the lack of formal institutions forces slum residents to depend on these same communities and their leaders for access to basic services and mediation of interpersonal conflicts. These conditions point to a link between development, governance, and accountability failures, and the phenomenon of early child marriage. The Government of Bangladesh has identified preventing child marriage as a key priority in its public health and development agenda. At the 2014 Girl Summit in the United Kingdom, the prime minister of Bangladesh pledged to end all under-15 child marriages by 2021, and under-18 child marriages by 2041. This IDRC project supports research that helps design public policy interventions in urban Bangladesh to tackle this priority. In addition to informing policymakers based on evidence, the project will look for opportunities to scale up the proposed interventions by organizing common platforms for action for a range of governmental and non-governmental organizations.

This joint initiative, UNICEF-...UNFPA, will help reduce deaths of girls, women and infants by promoting and improving sexual and reproductive health services and rights and access to related information services. It will particularly focus on increasing effective coverage of key sexual and reproductive health services and rights including maternal newborn child health services in low performing districts. It will address gaps and weakness of local government service delivery capacity, geography and culture to reduce preventable deaths amongst women and infants. The overall goal of the proposed initiative is to contribute and accelerate the existing efforts of the government of Bangladesh in promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights of the population, especially among women and adolescents, including efforts to improve maternal, new-born, child and adolescent health./ Cette initiative conjointe, UNICEF et FNUAP, contribuera à réduire les décès de filles, de femmes et de nourrissons en promouvant et en améliorant les services et les droits en matière de santé sexuelle et génésique ainsi que l'accès aux services d'information connexes.

The objective of the project i...s to reduce the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly female genital mutilation (FGM) in the Departements of Borgou and Alibori in Benin. The project is based on a multi-sector approach which fosters social change in individual and collective behaviour, as well as a shift in social norms that justify and perpetuate these practices. The project activities include: 1) training women, men, girls and boys on gender equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and the adverse effects of female genital mutilation; 2) supporting the central government in reviewing and harmonizing women's rights policies and strategies by integrating GBV and FGM issues; 3) supporting professionals from health and education institutions to identify and implement activities geared towards eliminating mutilation FGM and other gender-based violence.

This project contributes to th...e sexual and reproductive health and rights commitment. The project will support the objective of the government of Bolivia of preventing violence against women. Bolivia has the highest rate of violence against women in the region. Violence against women is the main obstacle to women's ability to exercise their rights, to gain autonomy at the economic, social and political level, and to contribute to the country's development. The root causes of violence being cultural and institutional, the project will aim to contribute to changes at both these levels, by reducing the social acceptability of violence through the transformation of social imaginaries, as well as increasing gender-sensitive public investments and strenghtening municipal services for women./Ce projet contribue à l'engagement envers la santé et les droits sexuels et reproductifs.

This project is aligned with C...anada`s Feminist International Assistance Policy, more specifically, promoting women's economic empowerment and eliminating sexual and gender based violence. The project is focused on addressing the constraints which limit the ability of East African women to participate in economic activities and cross-border trade. The project will address: (i) increased access to markets and trade-related services for women traders; (ii) improved policy, legal, institutional and regulatory environment for strengthening the implementation of existing regional gender frameworks; and (iii) reduction in the incidences of violence against women, through increased awareness of rights and obligations, increased participation of women in decision-making, sensitisation of border officials on gender, adoption of gender sensitive cross border trade charters, establishment of safe working spaces for women and developing and operationalizing a reporting mechanism on Violence Against Women (VAW)./Ce projet est en ligne avec la politique d'aide internationale féministe du Canada, plus particulièrement à la promotion de l'autonomisation économique des femmes et à l'élimination de la violence sexuelle et sexiste.

Security for women and the les...bian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in the conflict-affected regions in Colombia
more
|
Colombia is currently in the p...rocess of concluding peace negotiations with the guerrilla group Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC). One of the principal expectations generated by the negotiation process is that violence will decline once the final agreement is signed. However, serious reservations and concerns are being raised about whether crimes and violent incidents against women and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people will actually decrease in the post-conflict era, particularly at the local level. The local partner for this project is Fundación Ideas para la Paz (Foundation for Ideas for Peace), a local non-governmental organization formed to generate knowledge, propose initiatives, develop practices and policy, and support processes contributing to the construction of stable and durable peace in Colombia. The project will help diagnose the security situation and construct alternative solutions to improve the local security conditions of women and LGBTI people in three regions affected by the violence. The project will examine public and security policies associated with gender-based violence (GBV) as well as mechanisms for access to justice in related cases. It will work with key stakeholders to improve the local security conditions of women and LGBTI people, with a focus on GBV reduction. It will build and strengthen community, public, and private sector capacities to improve the security of women and LGBTI people affected by GBV, inform and sensitize stakeholders about local security conditions associated with GBV, with an emphasis on sexual violence, and disseminate recommendations for better policy and practice at local, national, and regional levels.
