The project, implemented by th...e Canadian Bar Association (CBA), aims to increase sustainable economic growth for communities hosting natural resource development, including women and vulnerable groups, in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The project empowers community members and local civil society to advance their rights, and access the benefits of natural resource development through awareness-raising, collaborative community projects and law reform. By training lawyers on advocacy and international best practices related to negotiation, contracts and employment in the natural resource sector, the project helps improve the transparency and accountability of laws and expand the benefits accruing from natural resource development to local communities. The project primarily benefits civil society, lawyers, government representatives and women and men in communities hosting natural resource development in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda./ Le projet, qui est mis en œuvre par l'Association du Barreau canadien (ABC), vise à accroître la croissance économique durable au profit de communautés où l'on développe les ressources naturelles, dont des femmes et des groupes vulnérables, au Kenya, en Tanzanie et en Ouganda. Le projet donne des moyens d'action aux membres de la communauté et à la société civile locale pour promouvoir leurs droits et accéder aux avantages du développement des ressources naturelles par la sensibilisation, des projets communautaires collaboratifs et la réforme du droit. This project is aligned with C...anada`s Feminist International Assistance Policy, more specifically, promoting women's economic empowerment and eliminating sexual and gender based violence. The project is focused on addressing the constraints which limit the ability of East African women to participate in economic activities and cross-border trade. The project will address: (i) increased access to markets and trade-related services for women traders; (ii) improved policy, legal, institutional and regulatory environment for strengthening the implementation of existing regional gender frameworks; and (iii) reduction in the incidences of violence against women, through increased awareness of rights and obligations, increased participation of women in decision-making, sensitisation of border officials on gender, adoption of gender sensitive cross border trade charters, establishment of safe working spaces for women and developing and operationalizing a reporting mechanism on Violence Against Women (VAW)./Ce projet est en ligne avec la politique d'aide internationale féministe du Canada, plus particulièrement à la promotion de l'autonomisation économique des femmes et à l'élimination de la violence sexuelle et sexiste. Le projet se vise à lever les contraintes qui limitent la capacité des femmes de l'Afrique de l'Est à participer aux activités économiques et au commerce transfrontalier. Le projet va s'assurer : (i) d'un accès accru aux marchés et aux services liés au commerce pour les commerçantes; (ii) d'une amélioration de l'environnement politique, juridique, institutionnel et réglementaire pour le renforcement de la mise en œuvre des cadres régionaux de genre existants; et iii) de la réduction des cas de violence à l'égard des femmes, de la sensibilisation accrue aux droits et obligations, de la participation accrue des femmes à la prise de décisions, de sensibilisation des fonctionnaires des frontières aux questions de genre, de l'adoption de chartes commerciales transfrontalières tenant compte des sexospécificités, des espaces pour les femmes, de développer et d'opérationnaliser un mécanisme de signalement sur la violence contre les femmes.

January 2017 - This project is... part of the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan for the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Projects under this appeal help to reduce the vulnerability of Palestinians, especially women and children, affected by the ongoing crisis. Of the 4.8 million people who live in the West Bank and Gaza, the United Nations estimates that approximately two million will need some form of humanitarian assistance in 2017. Palestinians endure high rates of poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity. Internal displacement and recurrent conflict have eroded coping mechanisms and necessitate a humanitarian response focused on protection.With Global Affairs Canada's support, the United Nations Population Fund will provide essential medical, psychosocial, and legal services to approximately 5,000 survivors of gender-based violence. This will be achieved through establishing four one-safe-stop centres in high priority, vulnerable areas where women, men, and adolescent girls and boys can receive holistic medical and psychosocial support and be referred to other services, such as legal assistance and counselling. This project aims to: (1) prov...ide access to justice for women and girls who have petitioned the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to resolve violations of their rights, and (2) help member states of the IACHR meet their obligations to prevent, protect, investigate and act to correct the historical and structural discrimination, gender inequality and violence against women and girls in Latin America and the Caribbean. The project supports the IACHR in its work to address petitions, cases and requests of precautionary measures (rapid response in situations where there is an imminent risk of irreparable harm) related to discrimination and violence against women and girls. The project also supports IACHR member states in their efforts to meet regional standards (legal decisions and case law interpretations on state obligations to comply with commitments under the American Human Rights Convention and the Organization of American States Charter) and promote structural changes aimed at preventing violence against women and girls. Project activities include: (1) providing training for beneficiaries and stakeholders (public officials, women and girls), (2) holding public hearings with petitioners, victims and states, (3) organizing working meetings with stakeholders and members of the IACHR, and (4) providing states with guidance on applying IACHR recommendations and assisting states to incorporate them into domestic law. / Ce projet vise à : 1) fournir un accès à la justice pour les femmes et les filles qui ont demandé à la Commission interaméricaine des droits de l'homme (CIDH) de remédier aux violations de leurs droits, 2) aider les États membres de la CIDH à respecter leur obligation de prévenir la discrimination historique et structurelle, les inégalités de genre et la violence à l'égard des femmes et des filles en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes, y compris leur obligation de protéger les victimes, d'enquêter sur les violations et d'y remédier. Throughout the developing worl...d, young men and women face high unemployment coupled with strong feelings of dissatisfaction with their quality of life in contexts of weak governance and institutions, increased political instability, and growing state authoritarianism — factors that render societies vulnerable and play a role in radicalization. Predominant strategies to counter these phenomena remain state-centered, with limited participation of civil society stakeholders. Populations who suffer most from this violence, insecurity, and lack of civic engagement, such as young men and women, continue to be largely excluded from participating in policy and governance related decisions. But youth are active in an array of movements associated with emerging social, economic, cultural, and political issues. In Latin America, one dimension of violence is associated with the obstacles women face when seeking to actively participate in public affairs. This type of political violence hinders the possibility of women to influence and/or directly act on policies or actions that could potentially solve other dimensions of violence such as physical, racial, or sexual. Women and other gender minorities within the LGBTI community face a double challenge when addressing these issues, because political representation is simultaneously limited by discriminatory barriers and by the collapse of the traditional structures of political representation, such as political parties.Supported by Asuntos del Sur, a think tank based in Argentina, this project aims to test and refine an approach that builds the leadership capacities of young women in Latin America, especially in the areas of sexual and gender-based violence. The aim is to develop monitoring and evaluation capacities and tools within the organization to test their approach in terms of efficiency, sustainability, and impact. It will consist of a research agenda aimed at identifying, understanding, and systematizing innovative political processes that focus on eradicating structural factors of violence against women, pursuing strategies that increase the empowerment of young women, nurturing regional innovation by disseminating experiences, tools, and concepts learned, and by participating in regional networks such as the Organization of American States.This project is part of a cluster of projects, Giving youth a voice: promoting spaces for civic engagement, inclusion, and violence reduction in South Asia and Latin America, launched in June 2017.

Child marriage among girls is ...most common in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, with Bangladesh having the highest rate of marriage involving girls under age 15. Sixty-four percent of Bangladeshi girls are married before the age of 18, with the median age for a first marriage at 16.4. Studies indicate lack of education and poverty as drivers for early marriage in urban Bangladesh. Uneducated adolescent girls are at higher risk of marrying five years earlier than those with secondary or higher education. Eighty-one percent of girls from households with the lowest income marry before age 18, as compared with 56 percent from households with the highest income. In urban slums, where a large population of poor and uneducated adolescent girls resides, the issue of early marriage is more acute when compared with data for a similar age group from urban non-slum areas. Pervasive violence, extreme poverty and absence of basic services in urban slums contribute to early child marriage. Kidnapping, land grabbing, extortion, sexual harassment and assault, often committed by local residents, are all common. At the same time, the lack of formal institutions forces slum residents to depend on these same communities and their leaders for access to basic services and mediation of interpersonal conflicts. These conditions point to a link between development, governance, and accountability failures, and the phenomenon of early child marriage. The Government of Bangladesh has identified preventing child marriage as a key priority in its public health and development agenda. At the 2014 Girl Summit in the United Kingdom, the prime minister of Bangladesh pledged to end all under-15 child marriages by 2021, and under-18 child marriages by 2041. This IDRC project supports research that helps design public policy interventions in urban Bangladesh to tackle this priority. In addition to informing policymakers based on evidence, the project will look for opportunities to scale up the proposed interventions by organizing common platforms for action for a range of governmental and non-governmental organizations.

This project aims to strengthe...n Bangladesh's capacity to both reduce actual violence against women and girls and the widespread acceptance of violence against women in Bangladesh. It provides women with tools to improve their own safety, in public, at home, and at work and at the same time it works with public and private institutions to implement policies to prevent violence against women. The project collaborates with families and communities to create more gender equitable roles and relations inside households. It also supports and reinforces Bangladesh's own policies and regulations concerning violence against women and generates knowledge and capacity that contribute to more effective prevention of gender-based violence by government and civil society. / Ce projet vise à renforcer la capacité du Bangladesh à réduire à la fois la violence à l'égard des femmes et des filles et l'acceptation répandue de la violence faite aux femmes dans ce pays. Il offre aux femmes des outils qui leur permettent d'améliorer leur propre sécurité en public, à la maison et au travail, et aux établissements publics et privés de mettre en place des politiques de prévention de la violence à l'égard des femmes. Il collabore également avec les familles et les communautés afin de bâtir des rôles et des relations plus équitables entre les hommes et les femmes au sein des ménages. Enfin, il soutient et solidifie les politiques et réglementations du Bangladesh en matière de violence à l'égard des femmes et génère des connaissances et des capacités qui contribuent à une prévention plus efficace de la violence en fonction du sexe par le gouvernement et la société civile.

The objective of the project i...s to reduce the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly female genital mutilation (FGM) in the Departements of Borgou and Alibori in Benin. The project is based on a multi-sector approach which fosters social change in individual and collective behaviour, as well as a shift in social norms that justify and perpetuate these practices. The project activities include: 1) training women, men, girls and boys on gender equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and the adverse effects of female genital mutilation, 2) supporting the central government in reviewing and harmonizing women's rights policies and strategies by integrating GBV and FGM issues, 3) supporting professionals from health and education institutions to identify and implement activities geared towards eliminating mutilation FGM and other gender-based violence. / L'objectif du projet est la réduction de la prévalence des violences basées sur le genre (VBG) et en particulier, des mutilations génitales féminines (MGF) dans les départements du Borgou et de l'Alibori au Bénin. Le projet est basé sur une approche multisectorielle qui permet un changement social au niveau des comportements individuels et collectifs, ainsi qu'une modification des normes sociales qui justifient et perpétuent l'exercice de ces pratiques. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) former les femmes, les hommes, les filles et les garçons sur des thèmes tels que l'égalité des genres, les droits sexuels et reproductifs et les effets néfastes des mutilations génitales féminines, 2) appuyer le gouvernement central dans la révision et l'harmonisation de politiques et de stratégies liées aux droits des femmes en intégrant les questions de VBG et MGF, 3) appuyer les professionnels des institutions de santé et d'éducation pour l'identification et la mise en œuvre d'activités de promotion de l'abandon des mutilations et autres violences basées sur le genre.

L'aménagement de trois boutiques permettra la vente d'artisanat tout en faisant la promotion du ??avoir-faire et du patrimoine culturel. Les femmes et jeunes des regroupements communautaires et les partenaires du projet seront sensibilisés à l'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes ainsi que sur les violences basées sur le genre. Although gender-based violence... (GBV) is endemic globally, some of the highest rates in the world are found in Muslim-majority countries where conservative interpretations of Islamic Family Law persist. Such interpretations often lead to and justify practices such as early child and forced marriage, loss of guardianship by the mother of her children, prohibition of women from initiating divorce, the practice of honour killing, and the right of parents and family members to control the bodies of their spouses, daughters, and female relatives, including the practice of female genital mutilation. As a result, any solution to GBV must address both legislation and cultural understanding if legal reform is to succeed. Such a solution must involve the promotion of moderate interpretations of Islamic Law, by women, women's groups, and other civil society organizations, to challenge the authority of fundamentalist religious authorities and others. This project aims to empower women by informing them about Islamic Family Law, and to provide more moderate interpretations of these laws to protect their human rights as well as to prevent and overcome GBV. This proposed research and advocacy project on GBV will be led by the Lebanon-based Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), building on its 15-year history of research and advocacy training on combating gender-based violence in more than 50 countries. The project seeks to (1) challenge GBV through research and the development of locally-led new knowledge on how to reform Family Law in Muslim-majority countries; (2) use the research as a basis for effective national advocacy against GBV; and (3) build a global advocacy network, the first of its kind, for those who experience GBV justified in the name of religion. The countries of focus will be Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Palestinian Territories, Morocco, Mauritania, Pakistan, Senegal, and India (where Muslims are a minority). WLP's wide-scale partnership with well-established organizations located in countries with Muslim majorities in the Global South and India will enable it to reach the widest number of beneficiaries and provide culturally specific, effective solutions for countering GBV. The organization's long history of work with international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank, will also allow it to effectively mobilize the international community in support of a global advocacy campaign against GBV.

The aim of the project is to h...elp achieve greater equality between women and men as political leaders and agents of change in West and Central Africa. In support of this goal, the project seeks to increase women's full and effective political participation by: (1) promoting legislative reforms that ensure women's fair access to political life, (2) strengthening the skills of women to run successful electoral campaigns, and (3) training newly elected women leaders to be effective legislators and to champion issues of gender equality. The project is supporting more than 250,000 women political actors, as well as 500 women's civil society organizations across the Central African Republic (CAR), Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria. / L'objectif du projet est de contribuer à une plus grande égalité entre les femmes et les hommes en tant que leaders politiques et agents de changement en Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre. À l'appui de cet objectif, le projet vise à accroître la participation pleine et effective des femmes à la vie politique en : (1) effectuant la promotion de réformes législatives qui garantissent aux femmes un accès équitable à la vie politique , (2) renforçant les compétences des femmes à mener des campagnes électorales réussies , (3) en formant les femmes nouvellement élues à devenir des législatrices efficaces et à défendre les questions d'égalité des sexes. Le projet soutient plus de 250 000 actrices politiques ainsi que 500 organisations de femmes de la société civile à travers la Guinée, le Libéria, le Nigéria et la République centrafricaine (RCA).

Project activities include: (1) providing psychosocial and legal support to help women survivors recover from and seek justice for the physical and psychological violence they have experienced, (2) providing training to women human rights defenders and organizations and other key stakeholders on national and international human rights frameworks and gender-based analysis, as well as organizational strengthening, (3) developing or improving National Action Plans and the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) on women, peace and security, and (4) establishing South-South exchanges to facilitate networking, mutual learning and skills building. This project is expected to directly reach more than 35,000 beneficiaries (78% women and 22% men) in the five countries/territories, including approximately 9,500 women survivors of gender-based violence. In addition, it is expected to reach 200,000 (150,000 women and 50,000 men) indirect beneficiaries nationally, including extended families, community members, networks, government employees and other stakeholders, as well as another two million indirect beneficiaries internationally through networks, coalitions, and social media. / Ce projet vise à permettre aux personnes et aux organisations qui défendent les droits fondamentaux des femmes de participer de façon efficace aux processus de développement, de paix et de sécurité à l'issue d'un conflit en Cisjordanie, en Colombie, aux Philippines, en République démocratique du Congo et au Soudan du Sud. Le projet vise à renforcer la capacité des bénéficiaires à recourir au droit national et aux cadres internationaux des droits de la personne pour défendre et protéger les droits des femmes après un conflit. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) soutien psychosocial et juridique pour aider les survivantes à se rétablir et à obtenir justice pour la violence physique et psychologique qu'elles ont subie, 2) formation des personnes et des organisations qui défendent les droits fondamentaux des femmes, ainsi que d'autres intervenants clés, sur les analyses sexospécifiques et les cadres nationaux et internationaux des droits de la personne, et le renforcement des capacités organisationnelles, 3) établissement ou amélioration des plans d'action nationaux et mise en œuvre des résolutions du Conseil de sécurité des Nations Unies (RCSNU) sur les femmes, la paix et la sécurité, 4) tenue d'échanges Sud-Sud pour faciliter le réseautage, l'apprentissage mutuel et l'acquisition de compétences.
