SEXUAL ABUSE AND ACCESS TO JUS...TICE FOR RURAL WOMEN IN WEST AFRICA
more
|
Sexual abuse and access to jus...tice for rural women in West Africa
more
|
This research takes place with...in the context of several major overlapping factors in West Africa: a democratization process that, in principle, includes equal access to public services - including justice - for all citizens; the existence of formal legal systems, national and international, conducive to the protection of women from sexual abuse; and the informal legal system. Access to justice in this region still remains a major challenge, especially for rural women, who are typically far away from legal infrastructure, which illustrates a significant gap between the de jure and de facto situations. Furthermore, existing research shows that the actions taken by women's rights organizations to prevent these crimes do not adequately help those who are the most marginalized - namely, rural women - who make up nearly 40% of the total population and more than 50% of the rural population in the region. Yet, accumulated knowledge shows that effective access to justice can be an effective way to prevent and reduce sexual abuse of women. This project aims to generate probative data on how, within a context of coexisting formal and informal justice systems, to promote justice for rural women who are victims of sexual abuse in Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal, while at the same time making public institutions more accountable. More specifically, this project will involve the African Network for Integrated Development (ANID) and its partners taking a participatory research-action approach, and combining qualitative and quantitative methods to produce a knowledge base regarding sexual abuse and the constraints on access to justice in rural areas. The data gathered will be used to develop alternative and realistic models for access to justice, specifically through empowering women to help prevent and challenge the impunity of sexual abuse against rural women in these countries.

This project aims to improve t...he empowerment and physical wellbeing of girls living in communities with a high prevalence of child, early and forced marriage. It seeks to strengthen child, early and forced marriage prevention systems in Benin and Mali and mitigate the damaging impacts of this practice on girls and the communities. The project is reinforcing alliances between government and civil society organizations, strengthening the legal and regulatory frameworks for child protection, developing gender-sensitive and child-friendly spaces and building the capacity of service-providers who support victims of early and forced marriage. The project also supports social and behavioural change at the community level. Project activities include: (1) organizing and implementing community dialogues, including involving influential community leaders, to increase awareness of the damaging impacts of child, early and forced marriage and of the key points of child protection; (2) mobilizing NGO networks to advocate for the application of key child protection legislation; (3) engaging the media to disseminate CEFM prevention key messages to reach target populations; (4) delivering awareness raising campaigns through significant child protection awareness days, including The Day of the Girl (October 11) and the Day of the African Child (16 June); (5) conducting information sharing on children's rights with parents of young girls through community learning centres; (6) providing leadership activities for youth through extracurricular activities and social networks to deepen their participation in their communities and increase their awareness of children's human rights related to early and forced marriage; (7) conducting information sharing activities on STDs and HIV/AIDS for women and youth though community health channels; (8) providing technical assistance to women in village savings and credit associations; and (9) providing technical and institutional strengthening support to legal and judicial assistance officials, as well as vocational training centres.

March 2015 - Nearly three year...s after the eruption of conflict in northern Mali, its impact is still felt across the country and in particular in Timbuktu, Gao and Kidal regions. Despite continued progress in restoring state authority and public services in conflict-affected regions, the context remains marked by security incidents. Due to the conflict and insecurity, there remain over 86,000 internally displaced persons and 139,000 refugees in neighbouring countries. Humanitarian actors play a critical role in supporting lifesaving interventions, such as health care, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene interventions. With DFATD's support, Oxfam-Québec is providing emergency assistance to 30,500 conflict-affected people in the districts of Gao and Bourem, including access to water, the provision of seeds and tools as well as cash transfers to improve food security and livelihoods. Project activities include: (1) seasonal cash transfers to vulnerable households; (2) distribution of seeds and tools; (3) rehabilitation or construction of water points for the supply of safe drinking water and sanitation services; (4) promotion of safe hygiene practices; (5) advocacy against gender-based violence; and (6) promotion of safe access to humanitarian assistance and of human rights.

The project aims to end violen...ce against children, with a focus on ending sexual violence against girls. “Together for Girls†is a global public-private partnership that aims to improve the capacity of countries to prevent and respond to violence against children, by mobilizing and sustaining a global movement to end the human rights violations, public health impacts and long-term individual and social consequences associated with violence against children, especially sexual violence against girls. The Government of Canada joined this partnership to help further efforts to end violence against children in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia Pacific, and help expand the partnership to Latin America. With Canada's additional resources, UNICEF and the “Together for Girls†partnership aims to implement a Violence Against Children Survey (VACS) in a new partner country (Colombia) and support the action plans in two current partner countries (Tanzania and Cambodia, a member of La Francophonie). Project activities include: (1) conducting and supporting a national survey on the magnitude, nature and impact of violence against children through VACS; (2) supporting coordinated programme actions in response to completed VACS data in Tanzania and Cambodia; and (3) supporting a monitoring and reporting system in Tanzania and Cambodia and using this information to lead global advocacy and public awareness efforts to draw attention to the problem and promote evidence-based solutions.

This project aims to empower g...irls at risk of child marriage by building their skills and assets so that they have the capabilities to determine their own futures, especially choices about if, when and who they marry. It empowers married girls in Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to realize their full potential and become advocates and mentors for younger unmarried girls. In addition, it mobilizes communities to transform the attitudes and practices that drive child marriage, while taking actions to support girls' rights, create opportunities and promote education and sexual and reproductive health. The project supports an enabling and protective environment to effectively respond to child marriage through implementation of laws, policies and local child protection systems. And finally, it builds a knowledge base on prevention and responses to child marriage to facilitate evidence informed programming and policy/institutional responses. The project reaches approximately 151,933 beneficiaries in the areas of Tsholotsho, Kwekwe and Mutoko in Zimbabwe and in the area of Nilphamari In Bangladesh. Project activities include: (1) supporting youth leaders/champions to campaign in schools and supporting older out-of-school girls (including married girls) through the creation of safe spaces for them, building their life skills and creating income generation opportunities for them through a mix of technical/vocational training and piloting savings and loans associations; (2) improving public awareness using different tools and methods involving men and boys as active agents of change regarding child early and forced marriage and gender equality promotion; (3) engaging religious and traditional leaders, various existing community committees (including school committees and child protection committees), marriage officials, health workers and law enforcement agencies to implement relevant laws and promote positive social norms/cultural norms against child marriage; and (4) enhancing the capacities of duty bearers at different levels for establishing and strengthening child protection mechanisms at community level towards a fully functional national child protection system. The project aims to broaden an...d strengthen the enabling environment for rights and protection, and empower women through grass roots strategies in Afghanistan. It supports efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Law on the Elimination of Violence against Women and promotes collaborative local and national civil society networks in order to influence and mainstream gender equality into government policy-making. Results are achieved through awareness as well as capacity development and enhanced service delivery and through empowering women to take stronger roles in decision making processes. Project activities include: (1) enabling 20 civil society organisations to map protection issues for women and provide grants for protection projects serving 2,000 community members; (2) developing Protection Action Plans with relevant ministries and civil society organisations; (3) providing legal aid to 3,100 survivors of gender-based violence; (4) providing formal psychosocial counselling for 3,000 women; (5) training 180 female volunteers as community-based educators to raise awareness of gender-based violence and facilitate referrals to services; (6) providing income opportunities to 500 women and offer vocational apprenticeships to 600 women; and (7) reaching 160,000 community members through awareness and media sensitization on women's rights and empowerment issues, including targeted sensitization of 3,500 men. Overall, the project is expected to benefit 9,300 direct beneficiaries and up to 167,300 indirect beneficiaries (including women, men and children in targeted cities and provinces). Direct beneficiaries include survivors of gender-based violence, women in need of legal aid, peer counseling and psychosocial services, and women requiring basic education and vocational apprenticeships to further their socio-economic status. Twenty civil society organizations will also benefit as they increase their capacity to implement community protection based programing in support of women and girls. The project supports the prote...ction of rights of Afghan women and girls from gender-based violence. It strengthens Afghan civil society organizations to coordinate, advocate, protect and promote the rights and empowerment of women and girls. Programming includes economic empowerment of women activities aimed at expanding livelihood opportunities. The initiative aims to address both urgent and long-term needs of gender-based violence (GBV), through strengthening resilience and promoting a more supportive society. The capacity to engage and better support the rights of women is enhanced for members of Afghan civil society organizations, protection providers, religious leaders and women entrepreneurs, and relevant linkages are facilitated between civil society, policy makers and government actors. The project reach is approximately 13,000 direct beneficiaries and up to 627,000 indirect beneficiaries (including women and girls, men and boys in targeted provinces). Direct beneficiaries include teachers and schoolchildren, religious leaders, female entrepreneurs and protection providers.

FAMILY LAW REFORM TO CHALLENGE... GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: A RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED ADVOCACY PROJECT
more
|
Family Law Reform to Challenge... Gender-Based Violence: A Research and Knowledge-Based Advocacy Project
more
|
Although gender-based violence... (GBV) is endemic globally, some of the highest rates in the world are found in Muslim-majority countries where conservative interpretations of Islamic Family Law persist. Such interpretations often lead to and justify practices such as early child and forced marriage, loss of guardianship by the mother of her children, prohibition of women from initiating divorce, the practice of honour killing, and the right of parents and family members to control the bodies of their spouses, daughters, and female relatives, including the practice of female genital mutilation. As a result, any solution to GBV must address both legislation and cultural understanding if legal reform is to succeed. Such a solution must involve the promotion of moderate interpretations of Islamic Law, by women, women's groups, and other civil society organizations, to challenge the authority of fundamentalist religious authorities and others. This project aims to empower women by informing them about Islamic Family Law, and to provide more moderate interpretations of these laws to protect their human rights as well as to prevent and overcome GBV. This proposed research and advocacy project on GBV will be led by the Lebanon-based Women's Learning Partnership (WLP), building on its 15-year history of research and advocacy training on combating gender-based violence in more than 50 countries. The project seeks to (1) challenge GBV through research and the development of locally-led new knowledge on how to reform Family Law in Muslim-majority countries; (2) use the research as a basis for effective national advocacy against GBV; and (3) build a global advocacy network, the first of its kind, for those who experience GBV justified in the name of religion. The countries of focus will be Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Palestinian Territories, Morocco, Mauritania, Pakistan, Senegal, and India (where Muslims are a minority). WLP's wide-scale partnership with well-established organizations located in countries with Muslim majorities in the Global South and India will enable it to reach the widest number of beneficiaries and provide culturally specific, effective solutions for countering GBV. The organization's long history of work with international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank, will also allow it to effectively mobilize the international community in support of a global advocacy campaign against GBV.

This grant represents Canada's... institutional support to the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC). The SRSG-SVC uses these funds, along with other donors' funding, to achieve its mandate. The SRSG-SVC serves as the United Nations' spokesperson and political advocate on conflict-related sexual violence. The SRSG-SVC works to catalyse political will and transform it into concrete actions to address and prevent conflict-related sexual violence at the country level. The six priorities of the SRSG-SVC are: (1) to end impunity for sexual violence in conflict by assisting national authorities to strengthen criminal accountability, responsiveness to survivors and judicial capacity; (2) the protection and empowerment of civilians who face sexual violence in conflict, in particular, women and girls who are targeted disproportionately by this crime; (3) to mobilize political ownership by fostering government engagement in developing and implementing strategies to combat sexual violence; (4) to increase recognition of rape as a tactic and consequence of war through awareness-raising activities at the international and country levels; (5) to harmonise the UN's response by leading UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict, a network of focal points from 13 UN agencies that amplify programming and advocacy on this issue in the wider UN agenda; and, (6) to emphasize greater national ownership.

FAMILY LAW REFORM TO CHALLENGE... GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: A RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE-BASED ADVOCACY PROJECT

|
|

|
|

VIOLENCE PREVENTION, ACCESS TO... JUSTICE, AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN LATIN AMERICA
more
|
Violence Prevention, Access to... Justice, and Economic Empowerment of Women in Latin America
more
|
This project will identify and... analyze economic opportunity policies and practices that aim to support women in Latin America by preventing violence, increasing access to justice, and empowering them economically. Women and inequality in Latin America Women's economic empowerment and the reduction of violence against women have become urgent priorities in the political and social agendas of Latin American countries. This is particularly true given the deep socio-economic inequalities and the alarmingly high levels of violence that women face. These problems are deeply rooted. They need complex policy approaches and practices. Economic opportunities and violence Governments have increasingly introduced special programs and policies to increase women's economic opportunities and to prevent violence against women. Researchers are gathering knowledge on what works and what does not work to address the issues. There is a huge evidence gap regarding the complex relationship between economic empowerment and the reduction of violence against women. Although governments, international aid organizations, and civil society actors believe that economic opportunity programs are effective at reducing violence against women, there is no solid evidence base for this causal link. It is important to understand and analyze whether economic projects, particularly those that claim to prevent violence against women, result in new forms of violence. Solutions to empower women, reduce violence Researchers will identify and analyze interventions in Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. They will assess the impact of efforts on: -preventing violence against women -reducing victimization -improving women's access to justice The results will guide governments, civil society organizations, and international cooperation agencies as they develop and implement policies and programs.

The Gender Coordination Group,... established in 2008 in Colombia, is an important element of Colombia's donor coordination architecture. It gathers 43 organizations, including bilateral and multilateral donors, UN Agencies and international NGOs, to coordinate advocacy, development cooperation efforts focused on gender equality and women's rights. The Group facilitates policy dialogue with key Government of Colombia decision makers and advances policy reforms that improve gender equality in Colombia. During this two year period, Canadian funding will support research and knowledge sharing activities that strengthen the participation of women in peace building efforts, support the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence and help integrate gender considerations into national and local development plans and priorities. / Pending translation

The project aims to better pro...tect children from violence, exploitation, abuse, and discrimination by strengthening national child protection laws and policies, improving child and family welfare and justice services, and promoting positive and protective attitudes and behaviours towards children. The project includes: supporting the development of a National Child and Family Welfare Policy and a Juvenile Justice Policy; training child protection service providers on prevention measures and early child interventions; developing a revised social work curriculum; seeking the support of traditional and religious leaders for child protection, including child, early, and forced marriages; developing and implementing a comprehensive national birth registry with a specific focus on hard-to-reach northern areas; and helping the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit and selected courts become more child-friendly. The project focuses on the five most deprived regions of Ghana and expects to help 4.5 million children.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION, ACCESS TO... JUSTICE, AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN LATIN AMERICA

|
|

REDUCTION OF GENDER AND INSTIT...UTIONAL VIOLENCE AGAINST MESOAMERICAN MIGRANT WOMEN

Reduction of Gender and Instit...utional Violence against Mesoamerican Migrant Women

Six out of ten Central America...n women on their way through Mexico are victims of sexual violence, according to reports from Amnesty International. Migrants, particularly women and girls, suffer from multiple forms of violence during their journeys northward. The perpetrators of violence against them range from criminals to government authorities to their intimate partners. However, there is still no strong evidence base on this phenomenon. Migrant women not only lack systems to report violence against them, they are also being threatened and intimidated. This project seeks to understand what forms of violence against migrant women are being perpetrated by whom, where, how, and when, and to identify effective policies and practices to counteract and prevent these incidents. It will examine the conditions that result in the displacement of women, children, and adolescents in Guatemala and the south of Mexico, particularly those due to territorial control and institutional violence under the guise of immigration control. It will also look at what risks women face and how they are protected from violence. Researchers based in local human rights organizations will work closely with affected women and the organizations that serve them in the implementation of this project. The research will reflect the experiences of Mesoamerican migrant and refugee women and will provide the basis for public policy recommendations to protect their rights and safety. This project will also strengthen the research skills and victim support services of the participating organizations and institutions in Guatemala and Mexico. These include the Associación Equipo de Estudios Comunitarios y Acción Psicosocial (Association of Community Studies and Psychosocial Action Team) in Guatemala, Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Matías de Córdova A.C (Fray Matias Centre for Human Rights of Cordova) in Mexico, and the Voces Mesoamericanas, Acción con Pueblos Migrantes, Asociación Civil (Mesoamerican Voices, Action with Migrant People, Civil Association) in Mexico.

Despite constitutional guarant...ees, violence both within and outside the home is an ever-present threat and an everyday reality for a large majority of women and girls across India. In recent years, greater attention to incidents of violence against women in urban areas has produced new evidence about different forms of violence there. However, similar understanding of and evidence on the scale and different forms of violence against women in public spaces in rural areas does not exist. Acute violence against women and girls in rural areas has remained unaddressed, receiving scant policy attention. This project proposes to fill this gap by developing and validating an innovative evidence-informed model, kNOw Fear, to foster freedom from violence and safety for women and girls in rural public spaces in India. It will identify specific pathways of gender-based violence prevention and deliver an intervention model where both young women and men will come together to change attitudes, transform gender-regressive norms and practices, and contribute to making local governance institutions accountable to women's safety in rural public spaces. The project will concurrently build capacities of the elected members of local governance bodies, the Panchayati Raj Institutions, who are constitutionally mandated to ensure social justice and equitable development. The intention is to encourage them to respond to violence against women and girls, thereby positioning public safety for women and girls as a critical component of rural local governance. kNOw Fear will be led by the International Centre for Research on Women in collaboration with the Society for Women's Action and Training Initiatives (SWATI) and SETU Abhiyan, a group of development organizations in Kutch, India.

The project also supports social and behavioural change at the community level.Project activities include: (1) organizing and implementing community dialogues, including involving influential community leaders, to increase awareness of the damaging impacts of child, early and forced marriage and of the key points of child protection; (2) mobilizing NGO networks to advocate for the application of key child protection legislation; (3) engaging the media to disseminate CEFM prevention key messages to reach target populations; (4) delivering awareness raising campaigns through significant child protection awareness days, including The Day of the Girl (October 11) and the Day of the African Child (16 June); (5) conducting information sharing on children's rights with parents of young girls through community learning centres; (6) providing leadership activities for youth through extracurricular activities and social networks to deepen their participation in their communities and increase their awareness of children's human rights related to early and forced marriage; (7) conducting information sharing activities on STDs and HIV/AIDS for women and youth though community health channels; (8) providing technical assistance to women in village savings and credit associations; and (9) providing technical and institutional strengthening support to legal and judicial assistance officials, as well as vocational training centres./ Le projet vise à améliorer le bien-être physique et l'autonomisation des jeunes filles vivant dans des communautés où le mariage d'enfants, le mariage précoce et le mariage forcé sont fréquents.

|
|

REDUCTION OF GENDER AND INSTIT...UTIONAL VIOLENCE AGAINST MESOAMERICAN MIGRANT WOMEN
more
|
Reduction of Gender and Instit...utional Violence against Mesoamerican Migrant Women
more
|
