The project, Improving Materna...l Participation and Access to Community Training (IMPACT), aims to increase the utilization and improve the delivery of culturally appropriate health services to pregnant and lactating mothers and their children in 111 hard-to-reach indigenous communities in Guatemala and Honduras. Project activities include: (1) providing maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) centres with essential health care equipment and ensuring that they are adequately staffed with well-trained MNCH aides, (2) delivery of lactation workshops, as well as one-on-one counseling and support, to encourage women to initiate early and exclusive breastfeeding of their infants for at least five months, (3) delivering awareness raising workshops among key decision-makers in communities of MNCH related health risks, and enabling the health-related decision-making of vulnerable women, and (4) delivery of nutrition demonstration workshops to pregnant and lactating women. This project is expected to contribute to the improved health of 68,400 women and children, including 13,800 girls and 13,300 boys. In addition, more than 160,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly. CAUSE Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with CAUSE Honduras, CAUSE Guatemala and Instituticion Mam de Desarrollo Integral (IMDI).

The project aims to reduce chi...ld mortality in targeted regions benefitting an estimated 452,345 women and 3,740,379 children. Substantial progress has been made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality.Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies.

The project aims to reduce the... incidence of child and maternal mortality in targeted countries through maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE). Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a deadly disease that affects women and children in developing countries. When women give birth in unhygienic circumstances, both mother and baby are at risk of contracting tetanus if they are not protected by vaccination. With Canada's support, UNICEF Canada is providing tetanus vaccine to at least 3,401,448 women of reproductive age and their future newborns in Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, Kenya and South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) distributing vaccines and supplies for supplemental immunization activities; (2) strengthening of the cold chain to transport vaccines and supplies; (3) promoting clean delivery practices, routine immunization and antenatal care; (4) developing and implementing national plans of action, training and support for health workers; and (5) strengthening surveillance of MNTE to monitor and evaluate progress./ Le projet vise à réduire le nombre de cas de mortalité d'enfants et de mères dans les pays ciblés grâce à l'élimination du tétanos chez les mères et les nouveau-nés.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. This project builds on a previ...ous initiative supported by DFATD supporting the Mali Red Cross' efforts towards the Government of Mali's plans to reduce maternal and child mortality in the regions of Koulikoro and Sikasso. Initiative activities include: (1) raising awareness in communities on MNCH services available and ways to prevent illness through proper hygiene and sanitation; (2) training professional and community health workers, including volunteers, in the delivery and promotion of integrated packages of MNCH services; (3) training health staff in improved MNCH delivery, covering aspects such as management of service delivery, supervision of health workers, and procurement of medicines and supplies; (4) training health staff to collect, analyse and use administrative MNCH data to plan for improved MNCH service delivery and essentially improved health outcomes; and, (5) equipping health facilities with essential supplies and equipment. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.1 million women, men, adolescents, children and newborns. In addition, approximately 3.2 million adults and children are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative.

Mozambique has made it a prior...ity to address its high maternal death and adolescent pregnancy rates. Particularly in the rural areas, access to quality sexual reproductive health information and services, and to prenatal and delivery services is limited. This project will help find sustainable solutions to these challenges in Nampula province's rural Natikiri district. Implementation research will cost and assess the impact of an innovative community owned motorcycle ambulance service and of scaled up access to both strengthened reproductive health outreach services and improved community hospital emergency delivery services. The researchers collaborated closely with the surrounding community, the local hospital, as well as provincial and national ministries of health to prioritize these health problems and develop the set of innovative interventions. Strengthening capacity of maternity staff, enhancing health facility emergency obstetrical and outreach services and advancing efforts to eliminate illicit charges to clients should contribute to strengthening and improving the quality of provincial maternal health services. An action research methodology based on intervention implementation and ongoing monitoring will be applied to cost interventions, identify lessons to improve ongoing implementation and assess impact. Results will be shared with clinics and officials in the province and at national level to promote wider application and adoption. Scientific publications will be produced and findings will be shared at national and international conferences.Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in AfricaThis project is part of and will contribute to the goals of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program through improving the scale of access to services by pregnant women in Mozambique through innovation and community engagement. IMCHA is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.

This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities; (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries; (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery; (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities; (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food; and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals. The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania.

This project aims to improve s...exual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health (SRMNH) for women, adolescent girls and newborns in the five most populous districts of Inhambane Province, Mozambique. This is achieved by increasing community support and access to sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health care; training health workers; improving the capacity of health institutions; and promoting gender-responsive and evidence-based approaches for planning of cost-effective interventions.Project activities include: (1) mobilizing local leaders and community members in 20 communities on women's empowerment and SRMNH; (2) creating and supporting networks of trained community-based health practitioners with links to health facilities; (3) designing and delivering an in-hospital initial and continuing education program; (4) strengthening the management of training institutions and training new health practitioners; (5) building or rehabilitating and equipping clinics for maternal and reproductive health; and (6) disseminating gender-responsive information and research on SRMNH.Community members in Inhambane Province, mainly women and adolescent girls of child-bearing age (165,000) and newborns (23,000), are expected to benefit from increased use of higher quality health services./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé sexuelle, génésique, maternelle et néonatale (SSRMN) des femmes, des adolescentes et des nouveau-nés au sein des cinq districts les plus peuplés de la province d'Inhambane au Mozambique.

This project aims to improve t...he sexual, reproductive, maternal and neonatal health of up to 38,000 direct beneficiaries, mostly women and adolescent girls, with inadequate access to appropriate health care services in three districts in Nampula Province. It also seeks to reduce child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) and early or unwanted pregnancy.Project activities include: (1) conducting radio programmes on sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, early pregnancy and CEFM, as well as mobilization events in 60 villages; (2) establishing women's, men's and adolescent girls' and boys' groups and clubs to promote knowledge of health issues and life skills; (3) working with community elders who facilitate traditional initiation rites for adolescents to help protect girls' sexual and reproductive rights; (4) training health care providers on gender-responsive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health, maternal and neonatal health services; and (5) conducting provincial coalition meetings to identify solutions to end child marriage and develop a provincial action plan on CEFM topics, including early pregnancy, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and maternal and neonatal health./Le projet vise à améliorer la santé sexuelle, reproductive, maternelle et néonatale pour jusqu'à 38 000 bénéficiaires directs, principalement des femmes et des adolescentes, qui ont un accès insuffisant à des services adéquats de soins de santé dans trois districts de la province de Nampula.

This project strongly supports... the Ministerial commitment of contributing $650M over three years in support of SRHR initiatives and the Ministerial priority of empowering women and girls. It will advance access to and use of sexual and reproductive health services to women, adolescents, and newborns within the national health program, including comprehensive family planning services (including contraception, abortion and post-abortion care) and HIV/AIDS and STI prevention and management.

Nigeria has one of the highest... rates of maternal mortality in the world. Maternal mortality is especially high in Bauchi State, where, according to a recent survey, only 16% of women had a qualified attendant for their last delivery, and only 40% had four or more visits to a government facility before delivery (four visits is the minimum standard set by UNICEF and the World Health Organization). Both national and state governments have identified maternal mortality as a priority issue, with a particular focus on strengthening primary healthcare services to improve maternal and child health. One of the key strategies for reducing maternal and child mortality is child spacing. This project, a partnership between the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning/McGill University and the Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria, will develop and test a culturally appropriate home-visit intervention focusing on child spacing and the use of contraception. This home-visit approach, using portable video-education technologies, is now in use to reach the most vulnerable population. It will be expanded to all pregnant women and their spouses. Visits will cover information on safer pregnancy and delivery and will support couples to adopt safer behaviours in child spacing using culturally relevant practices. The project will further work with state governments, in particular the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, to equip a critical mass of government officers with the necessary skills and tools for effective management, supervision, and monitoring of such a program. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

RESPONDING TO THE CHALLENGE OF... ADOLESCENT PERINATAL DEPRESSION
more
|
Responding to the challenge of... Adolescent Perinatal Depression
more
|
Adolescents experience a numbe...r of major neurobiological, hormonal, physical and psychological changes, which present important risks for their health and wellbeing. Pregnancy compounds this dynamic experience for adolescents and potentially further complicates the expectations of their social roles in ways that are beyond what the average pregnant adult would experience. Yet, health systems are not attuned to the particular care needs of pregnant adolescents. Evidence shows that a critical gap exists in the management of perinatal adolescent depression, a condition which brings significant long-lasting consequences for both the mother and the infant.Through the proposed synergy project, the researchers will complement their efforts to improve maternal mental health in their ongoing IMCHA project (#108040) by addressing the critical knowledge gap regarding the mental health needs of adolescents. Specifically, they will develop and evaluate an intervention program for adolescent perinatal depression, and determine the contextual factors required for its integration in the delivery of routine primary care. They will leverage on the strategic platform of the Nigerian National Mental Health Action Committee to promote the uptake of their findings into policies and practices related to the management of perinatal depression. This work will contribute to the much needed body of evidence on how to develop policies and scale-up programs for integrated adolescent mental healthcare in Nigeria and beyond. The project will build on the established partnership between the University of Ibadan (Nigeria) and McGill University (Canada). By focusing on adolescent mental health, it addresses an important under-researched and strategic niche area in maternal and neonatal health. The project is closely aligned with the Government of Canada's new feminist international assistance policy, the strategic priorities detailed in the 2016-2030 WHO led Global Strategy for Women, Children and Adolescents, and the overarching 2030 global agenda for sustainable development.
