The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. |
Latin America is home to the g...reatest inequities in the world, including inequality in access to quality health services. Indigenous peoples have the poorest health in the region, due to such factors as geographic isolation, limited access to safe water, sanitation and food, and a poor understanding of, and sensitivity to, cultural beliefs and practices. Among the indicators of greatest concern is the high rate of maternal mortality. Indigenous women consistently experience higher maternal mortality rates than non-indigenous women in Latin America. Efforts to improve maternal health for indigenous women and adolescent girls must be based on a clear understanding of how to provide and measure high-quality care that ensures adequate health outcomes with dignity. This project examines quality of care from a cultural and a technical perspective in three indigenous communities in Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. Each of these three case studies will explore perceptions of quality care among indigenous women, and will involve collection and analysis of data using a customized framework for quality of care indicators. The study will examine the implementation of integrated health service delivery networks in all the three countries. These networks are designed to coordinate different health providers and services and each country is implementing them differently. The three case studies will examine how the networks positively or negatively influence quality of care processes and outcomes. Results from the individual case studies and from the project as a whole are expected to inform strategies for scaling up efforts to improve quality of maternal care for indigenous populations. Expected outputs include scientific publications in Spanish- and English-language journals, and information sharing via community groups, the local press and social media.

This initiative aims to reduce... maternal and infant mortality in the typhoon-ravaged Eastern Samar and three urban slum communities in Metro Manila in the Philippines by addressing the lack of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, such as family planning, skilled birth attendants, emergency obstetric care and newborn care, as well as the lack of community understanding of safe motherhood practices. To address these needs, this initiative will establish an integrated network of four, non-profit MNCH clinics delivering services and outreach. Furthermore, this initiative will provide online and print public engagement resources, as well as speaking tours in Canada, to foster increased Canadian involvement in MNCH development efforts.Project activities include: (1) conducting information and education campaigns on safer MNCH issues; (2) training clinic medical staff on quality care standards, and up-to-date MNCH issues, knowledge, and practices; (3) setting-up and opening four MNCH clinics; (4) training women, youth and other marginalized groups in human rights and gender equality to enable behavioural changes that promote safe practices; and (5) produce and distribute public engagement resources on MNCH (print, online, video, toolkit) for use in Canada.This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 16,000 people, including approximately 6,400 children. Activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to grow healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), and including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI). / Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques en tablant sur un projet antérieur de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) au Cambodge. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la SMNE et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés, hommes et femmes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities; (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries; (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery; (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities; (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food; and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania./ Le projet vise à réduire les maladies et la mortalité chez les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé (hommes et femmes) et des accoucheuses traditionnelles pour qu'ils puissent donner des conseils éclairés sur les soins prénataux et postnataux, promouvoir des habitudes saines, offrir des soins de santé de base, repérer les grossesses à haut risque et orienter les patientes vers les établissements de santé gouvernementaux; 2) approvisionnement d'un certain nombre de centres de santé en équipement essentiel à la réduction des infections, à la surveillance des signes vitaux des fœtus et à la facilitation des accouchements de nuit; 3) construction de dispensaires et de résidences pour les infirmières et les femmes enceintes afin de favoriser l'accouchement dans un établissement; 4) création de moyens de transport rapides et abordables vers les établissements de santé; 5) amélioration de l'accès à l'eau potable et aux aliments nutritifs; 6) mobilisation et outillage des communautés et des dirigeants des villages pour leur permettre d'obtenir des résultats durables en matière de SMNE et d'égalité entre les sexes. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), and including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI). / Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques en tablant sur un projet antérieur de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) au Cambodge. The Maternal Newborn and Child... Health (MNCH) Training Support and Access Model (TSAM) initiative's objective is to establish a sustainable, cost-effective model of delivering training, providing continuing mentoring, coaching, and outreach for continuing professional development (CPD) in emergency care and access in MNCH. It builds on the model initiated by the University of Western Ontario under the Muskoka Initiative, directly addressing the ability of health care providers in district hospitals and the health centers to care for women, infants, and children presenting with complications before, during, and after birth including ensuring sustainability through the development of a cadre of well-trained professionals to continue the training and mentoring of other MNCH providers in the future. Activities include: 1) delivering workshops and short-term training sessions with MNCH mentors and coaches; 2) delivering workshops with nursing and midwifery faculty to integrate enhanced MNCH, gender and health concepts in the pediatric nursing and midwifery curriculum; and 3) providing support to strengthen programs in pediatric nursing and midwifery. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of 3,300 women, 1,800 men, 670 boys and 630 girls in targeted areas of Rwanda and Burundi needing emergency obstetrical and pediatric care, as well as the health care providers that are receiving the training. The University of Western Ontario is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Rwanda Medical and Dental Council, the National Council of Nursing and Midwifery, the Centre for Public Health and Development, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Rwanda in Rwanda, and the Association de Gynecologie-obstetrique du Burundi, Association Burundaise de Pediatrie, Association National des Infirmieres at Infirmiers au Burundi, Universite du Burundi Ecole d medicine, Institut National de Sante Publique and International Medical Corps in Burundi. / L'initiative d'appui à un modèle de formation et d'accès à la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) a pour objectif d'établir un modèle abordable et viable afin d'offrir de la formation, un mentorat et un encadrement soutenu et de mieux faire connaitre le perfectionnement professionnel continu en matière de soins d'urgence et d'accès à la SMNE. The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). The project aims to improve th...e lives of women, newborns and children under the age of five living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by providing funding and technical support to innovators who have identified solutions to maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) challenges. The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). Le projet est axé sur les deux premières phases de la plateforme d'innovation Grands Défis Canada (GDC). Pendant la première phase, GDC verse de petites subventions aux innovateurs afin qu'ils puissent faire de la recherche et formuler des idées prometteuses et novatrices pour régler les problèmes liés à la SMNE. La seconde phase comprend la mise à l'essai des innovations, l'établissement de partenariats stratégiques, l'obtention de fonds et de savoir-faire du secteur privé ainsi que la conception de plans d'affaires et de marketing afin de poursuivre le perfectionnement. This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results./ Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. Supported by Canada, the Unite...d Kingdom, the European Union, Sweden, and the United States, the Health Pooled Fund aims to deliver basic health services to those most vulnerable (particularly women and children) in eight of South Sudan's former ten States. The project aims to strengthen government systems, principally at the national and county levels, and to improve the health of women, newborns, adolescents, and children in this fragile state setting. This project builds on previous support to the Health Pooled Fund by extending coverage to new geographic areas, as well as by increasing the focus on nutrition and community-level service delivery. The needs of women and children are prioritized through a focus on safe motherhood, reproductive health, treatment of childhood diseases, and an increased emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health commitment to improve the health and rights of women and children./Soutenu par le Canada, le Royaume-Uni, l'Union européenne, la Suède et les États-Unis, le Fonds commun en santé vise à offrir des services de santé de base aux personnes les plus vulnérables (en particulier les femmes et les enfants) dans huit des dix anciens États du Soudan du Sud. Le projet vise à renforcer les systèmes gouvernementaux, principalement au niveau national et au niveau des comtés, ainsi qu'à améliorer la santé des femmes, des nouveau-nés, des adolescents et des enfants dans le contexte de ces États fragiles. Ce projet s'ajoute à l'aide accordée antérieurement au Fonds commun en santé en offrant l'aide à de nouvelles régions géographiques et en ciblant davantage la nutrition et la prestation de services au niveau des collectivités. Les besoins prioritaires des femmes et des enfants sont déterminés en fonction d'un accent sur la maternité sans risques, la santé de la reproduction et le traitement des maladies infantiles, ainsi que d'une insistance accrue sur l'égalité entre les sexes et l'inclusion sociale. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal and infant mortality rates in Yambio County by improving the quality of maternal and infant health services at the Yambio State Hospital. Project activities include: (1) training of medical staff in basic emergency obstetrics, paediatrics, pre- and post-natal care services, sexual and gender based violence, laboratory management, and water and sanitation; (2) providing the hospital with supplies and medicines and training on infection control; and (3) improving Health Management Information Systems capacities. The project is expected to reach about 39,000 people directly, including over 8,000 pregnant women and 30,860 children under the age of five. Amref Health Africa in Canada is working in partnership with Amref Kenya and Amref South Sudan to implement this project with the State Ministry of Health of Western Equatoria State. / Ce projet vise à réduire les taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile dans le comté de Yambio en améliorant la qualité des services de santé maternelle et infantile de l'hôpital public de Yambio. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) offrir au personnel médical une formation sur les soins d'urgence obstétriques, pédiatriques, anténatals et postnatals de base, la violence sexuelle et sexiste, la gestion de laboratoire, l'approvisionnement en eau et l'assainissement; 2) fournir au personnel de l'hôpital du matériel et des médicaments, et lui offrir une formation sur le contrôle des infections; 3) renforcer les capacités des systèmes d'information de gestion de la santé. Le projet devrait permettre d'aider directement environ 39 000 personnes, dont plus de 8 000 femmes enceintes et 30 860 enfants de moins de cinq ans. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities; (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries; (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery; (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities; (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food; and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania./ Le projet vise à réduire les maladies et la mortalité chez les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. The project seeks to reduce ma...ternal and newborn mortality in Tabora region, Tanzania, by improving the availability of quality maternal and newborn health services and increasing the utilization of maternal and newborn health services by women and their families at health facilities and within the community in targeted districts. The project increases the number of safe deliveries taking place in health facilities; the number of women who receive quality antenatal care during pregnancy and the contraceptive prevalence rate. It also decreases the number of women with unmet family planning needs.Project activities include: (1) building the capacity of regional and district council health management teams in data management and usage, supply chain management, budgeting and leadership to plan, deliver and manage maternal and newborn health services; (2) refurbishing and upgrading health centre and hospital maternity wards to provide life-saving Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) equipment and develop an emergency transportation system; (3) training and mentoring health care workers in BEmONC, CEmONC and reproductive health services including family planning; (4) training and supporting at least 1000 community health workers to deliver quality maternal and newborn health education and promote utilization of health care services; (5) developing and delivering youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services in health facilities; and; (6) leveraging existing village savings and loans programs which utilize a social fund for maternal and newborn health expenditures to increase women's financial independence and decision making related to household resources.The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, the Canadian Society for International Health, McGill University, CARE Tanzania, Association of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians of Tanzania, Ifakara Health Institute and the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Tanzania./ Le projet vise à réduire la mortalité des mères et des nouveau-nés dans la région de Tabora, en Tanzanie, en assurant une meilleure disponibilité des services de qualité pour la santé des mères et des nouveau-nés, et en veillant à ce que les femmes et leurs familles aient davantage recours à ces services dans les établissements de santé et au sein de la collectivité dans les districts ciblés. The project seeks to implement... evidence-based maternal newborn and child health (MNCH) interventions to reduce mortality and morbidity of pregnant women and newborns in underserved districts of Kigoma region, Tanzania. This goal is achieved by improving the availability of quality MNCH services in underserved districts and increasing the utilization of maternal and newborn health services by women and their families in targeted districts. The project also aims to strengthen the capacity of council and health facility management teams to deliver services by training local health managers on evidence-informed program planning and decision making. Project activities include: (1) training 190 local health managers and Council Health Management Teams (CHMTs) on evidence-based planning and budgeting, leadership, supportive supervision, and supply chain management of essential pharmaceuticals and contraceptives; (2) supporting the CHMTs to develop and implement a data quality assurance and maternal and newborn mortality review system at district and health facility levels; (3) training and mentoring 335 frontline health workers to enhance their clinical capacity on emergency obstetric and neonatal care and family planning; (4) strengthening referral networks and supporting quarterly mobile outreach MNCH clinics and supportive supervision visits to hard-to-reach areas; (5) upgrading and equipping 26 health facilities with medical equipment and WASH facilities to provide Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care services; and (6) conducting awareness sessions and community conversations with men and women support groups to discuss family planning issues and address concerns around the use of contraceptives, antenatal care and men's role in supporting pregnant women and newborns. The project is implemented in collaboration with Jhpiego, Africare and White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Tanzania. / Le projet vise à effectuer des interventions en santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) fondées sur des faits pour réduire la mortalité et la morbidité des femmes enceintes et des nouveau-nés dans les districts mal desservis de la région de Kigoma, en Tanzanie. This project addresses the mai...n causes of maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity through a two-pronged approach. On the demand-side, it is increasing utilization of sexual and reproductive, health, and rights SRHR services by women, adolescent girls, newborns and their families and on the supply side, it is improving the availability of quality SRHR services. The project is also working to improve utilization of, and access to, SRHR services for women of reproductive age and adolescent girls that are both gender responsive and adolescent friendly, and that support women and adolescent girls to have greater decision making power to seek SRHR services independently through gender transformative strategies. The project works closely with regional and national level governments to ensure sustainable delivery of high quality, gender sensitive health services.Project activities include: (1) training healthcare staff on high-impact maternal and newborn health interventions such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care (BEmONC), comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care (CEmONC), Helping Babies Breathe program, Kangaroo Mother Care, post-partum care and family planning; (2) equipping select facilities and hospitals with BEmONC and CEmONC equipment, Helping Babies Breathe and Kangaroo Mother Care supplies, reproductive health commodities and gender sensitive/adolescent friendly information, education and communication materials; (3) training community health workers and supporting outreach on gender equality, reproductive health services including family planning, and adolescent friendly maternal and newborn health; (4) conduct Village Health Days to provide maternal and newborn health services, including vitamin A, deworming and immunization for children under five; (5) develop new village savings and loans associations for adolescents and support existing ones for adults and community health workers to improve the financial independence of women and girls and promote the allocation of emergency funds.The project is implemented in collaboration with Jhpiego, Africare and White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood Tanzania./Ce projet s'attaque aux principales causes de mortalité et de morbidités maternelles et néonatales grâce à une approche à deux volets. The Uzazi Uzima II project see...ks to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in all five districts of Simiyu region, Tanzania by improving the availability of quality adolescent, maternal and newborn health services in underserved districts through three mutually supportive mechanisms. The project will: improve the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers on maternal, newborn and sexual/reproductive health to ensure they can provide critical services to their beneficiaries in a gender sensitive and responsive way; improve the infrastructure and supply-chain for health facilities to encourage women, girls and their families to use services; and improve gender responsive health management systems (such as planning, prioritization and management of services). The project will also increase awareness and understanding of sexual, reproductive, maternal and child health with special focus on men's participation in reproductive, maternal and newborn health and decision making.Project activities include: (1) training health workers from four health centres and 24 dispensaries on: essential maternal and newborn health skills, such as Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC); Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC), family planning; nutrition counselling; and newborn resuscitation; (2) refurbishing four health centres and 24 dispensaries to provide CEmONC, BEmONC, water, sanitation and hygiene and family planning services, including a satellite safe blood center at the regional hospital; (3) equipping targeted health facilities with the necessary stocks of equipment and commodities to provide BEmONC, CEmONC, family planning and safe blood services; (4) establishing a referral system for maternal and newborn health care and family planning services across all tiers of the health system; (5) training and supporting Ministry of Health and facility-based managers, and health workers to improve community to facility linkages (enhanced data collection, consolidation, analysis and reporting); and (6) training and equipping community health workers, traditional birth attendants, traditional healers, and local leaders to provide community-level health promotion services (including maternal and newborn health, water, sanitation and hygiene, family planning, nutrition, gender issues and use of mobile health technology to mobilize communities).The project is implemented in collaboration with Amref Health Africa in Tanzania, Marie Stopes Tanzania and Deloitte./ Le projet vise à réduire la mortalité et la morbidité des mères et des nouveau-nés dans les cinq districts de la région de Simiyu, en Tanzanie. The goal of this project is to... significantly improve maternal and newborn health for beneficiaries through improving the availability of quality maternal and newborn health services in underserved districts; and increasing the utilization of maternal and newborn health services for women and their families in target districts of all seven districts of Mwanza region, Tanzania. The project directly targets pregnant mothers and newborns. Beneficiaries also include men of reproductive age who would benefit from health promotion and sensitization activities aimed at improving maternal and newborn health outcomes. IMPACT increases access to quality services across the continuum of care, from community to facility, while strengthening leadership capacity at the health facility, local authority and community levels; and increasing community utilization of maternal and newborn health servicesProject activities include: (1) repairing, upgrading and equipping 80 public health facilities; (2) delivering fully functional basic emergency obstetric and newborn care (BEmONC) at 67 dispensaries and health centres and comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care services (CEmONC ) at 13 hospitals or health centers; (3) providing training and supportive supervision, in collaboration with the Regional and Community Health Management Teams, to enhance health facility managers' ability to plan, budget and lead quality service delivery; (4) training and empowering 80 village health committees to build linkages with community health structures and effectively plan and enable a maternal and newborn health-supportive community environment; and (5) building the capacity of health workers and community health workers in high-impact packages such as Helping Babies Breathe, Kangaroo Mother Care, EmONC and Focused Antenatal Care.The project is implemented in collaboration with Aga Khan Foundation Tanzania, Aga Khan University and Aga Khan Medical Services./Le projet vise à améliorer considérablement la santé des mères et des nouveau-nés en assurant une meilleure disponibilité des services de santé maternelle et néonatale de qualité dans les districts mal desservis et en augmentant l'utilisation de ces services par les femmes et leurs familles dans les sept districts de la région de Mwanza en Tanzanie. The goal of this project is to... improve the health services available to women in the province of Daikundi. The project establishes 49 family health houses in the province. Each house has a delivery room and an examination room in which a trained community midwife can safely work. The communities choose the location for the houses and are responsible for building them. The project also establishes a referral system for women and babies who require emergency care, women with high-risk pregnancies, and women who require delivery and recovery care beyond the basic care provided at the family health houses. The houses also receive support from mobile health teams from existing health facilities that bring supplies and provide supervision and mentoring for the midwives. Some project activities include: (1) training the midwives and equipping each family health house with the diagnostic and medical equipment required to ensure safe childbirth; and (2) setting up telecommunication and transport services between facilities to assist with the referrals. / Le but du projet est d'améliorer l'offre des services de santé destinés aux femmes dans la province de Daikundi. Le projet met sur pied 49 maisons de santé familiale dans la province. Chaque maison compte une salle d'accouchement et une salle d'examen permettant à une sageÂfemme communautaire formée de faire son travail sans risques. La collectivité est responsable du choix de l'emplacement des maisons et de leur construction. Comme les services fournis par la sageÂfemme sont des services de santé génésique de base, le projet met également en place un système d'aiguillage vers les soins appropriés pour les femmes et les nouveau-nés qui ont besoin de soins d'urgence, les femmes avec une grossesse à haut risque et les femmes qui nécessitent des soins obstétriques d'urgence. Les maisons reçoivent un appui supplémentaire de la part d'équipes de santé mobiles de centres de santé existants, qui fournissent du matériel et de la supervision et du mentorat pour les sages-femmes. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) former les sages-femmes et fournir, aux maisons de santé familiale, de l'équipement médical et de diagnostic nécessaire pour assurer l'accouchement sans risques; 2) mettre en place des systèmes de télécommunication et de transport communautaires entre les maisons et des centres de santé pour faciliter l'aiguillage.

This initiative aims to build ...local and facility-level capacity and accountability in order to reduce barriers that prevent pregnant women and mothers from utilizing sexual and reproductive health services in one province of Afghanistan and two regions in Malawi. The populations in both Afghanistan and Malawi face many challenges when it comes to accessing necessary medical care, particularly for pregnant women, and children. This has led to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Major factors that contribute to high mortality rates in both countries include long distances to health centres, a lack of skilled health professionals, and a lack of information regarding sexual and reproductive health. Project activities include: (1) improving the quality and supply of services at the facility level by improving the skills and approaches of health-care workers, as well as ensuring that the facilities and tools themselves are of standard quality and availability; (2) expanding demand for health services, and addressing gender gaps by increasing women's decision-making for their own and their children's health; and (3) increasing male support for women's decision making, increasing community participation in sexual and reproductive health, and changing behaviour that puts women and girls at risk. As a result, vulnerable groups will proactively seek and advocate for health services. This project targets 174,701 direct beneficiaries and 622,132 indirect beneficiaries. The Organization will implement this Project in collaboration with Community World Service Asia in Afghanistan, and in Malawi with Embangweni Mission Hospital (EMH) of Livingstonia Health Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterians (CCAP), and Mulanje Mission Hospital (MMH) of the CCAP Synod of Blantyre / Le projet vise à développer la responsabilisation, la capacité locale et celle des établissements à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes enceintes et les mères d'utiliser les services de santé génésique dans une province d'Afghanistan et deux régions du Malawi. Aussi bien en Afghanistan qu'au Malawi, les membres des collectivités, en particulier les femmes enceintes et les enfants, sont confrontés à de nombreuses difficultés d'accès à des soins médicaux. Ceci cause des taux élevés de mortalité chez les mères et les nouveau-nés. L'éloignement des centres de santé, la pénurie de professionnels de la santé et l'absence de renseignements concernant la santé génésique sont les causes principales des taux élevés de mortalité dans les deux pays. This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH. Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems. The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results. / Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants.
