Despite progress on reducing c...hild mortality, newborn mortality is declining at a slower pace and preterm birth complications is the single most significant cause of newborn mortality.This project aims to contribute to the reduction of preterm birth rates through an integrated approach addressing lifestyle, infection, nutrition and contraception (LINC) factors. Through a health consortium - led by World Vision Canada, and including Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada - this project is addressing the LINC factors in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Mali to reduce the incidence of preterm birth and its related complications.Project activities include: (1) training of facility healthcare workers and community health workers on high quality care for pregnant women and newborns; (2) upgrading of health facilities and provision of essential supplies; (3) strengthening of referral systems by providing training to front line service providers; (4) conducting outreach activities to address knowledge gaps related to healthy pregnancies and prevention of preterm birth; (5) empowering women's self-confidence, negotiation and leadership skills by conducting awareness raising at the community level (6) improving data collection and registration on birth, death and still birth by providing training to health care providers and updating reporting tools; (7) documenting and sharing of evidence-based best practices with regional and national policy and decision makers./ En dépit des progrès réalisés dans la réduction du taux de mortalité infantile, le taux de mortalité néonatale diminue plus lentement et les complications relatives aux naissances prématurées sont la principale cause de mortalité néonatale.L'objectif de ce projet est de contribuer à la réduction des taux de naissance prématurée au moyen d'une approche intégrée qui tient compte des facteurs liés au style de vie, aux maladies, à l'alimentation et à la contraception. This initiative aims to reduce... neonatal mortality in rural northern Ghana by building on a previous initiative on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) called Leyaata. Leyaata Ane will double the geographic scope of the previous Leyaata project by adding an additional 80 communities to the original 82. Delivery of health care, specifically healthcare around birth, will be improved by training 50 health workers, encouraging the adoption of codes of conduct, and ensuring facilities meet basic requirements for safe care around birth. Access to this improved care will be increased by a proven home visit program conducted by Community-Based Health Volunteers (CBSVs). Project activities include: 1) providing health workers with training in essential interventions at birth and for newborns; 2) rehabilitating and equipping local facilities with essential technologies; 3) training and equipping community based volunteers to provide home visits for antenatal counselling and neonate monitoring; 4) distributing long-lasting insecticidal nets to all pregnant women and new mothers; and, 5) facilitating support groups to promote women's care around birth and shared decision-making. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 39,000 people including approximately 20,000 children. In addition, more than 139,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative's results. Ghana Rural Integrated Development is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Northern Empowerment Association. / Cette initiative vise à réduire la mortalité des nouveau-nés dans les régions rurales du Nord du Ghana en s'appuyant sur une initiative précédente en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau nés et des enfants (SMNE) appelée Leyaata. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. The Project will contribute to... the reduction of maternal and child mortality, and improve maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) in Guatemala's predominantly Indigenous Department of Totonicapán. Activities include: (1) training traditional indigenous midwives on updated MNCH practices; (2) facilitating discussions to promote inter-culturally effective health care and transparency between health authorities and community leadership; (3) conducting learning exchanges on MNCH practices among MNCH leaders and providers in Guatemala and Canada, and (4) training of traditional midwives and community health promoters in family planning methods and provision of family-planning counselling to both women and men. This Project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 240,000 people in Totonicapán, including 140,000 indigenous women and 37,000 boys and 39,000 girls. In addition, more than 250,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from the results of the Project. Horizons of Friendship is implementing the project in collaboration with the Asociación para la Promoción, Investigación y Educación en Salud en el Occidente de Guatemala (PIES). / Le projet contribuera à réduire la mortalité infantile et maternelle et à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) dans le département à prédominance autochtone de Totonicapán au Guatemala. Parmi les activités du projet se trouvent : 1) la formation de sages-femmes autochtones traditionnelles quant aux pratiques de SMNE à jour; 2) la facilitation des discussions afin de promouvoir des soins de santé efficaces sur le plan interculturel et une certaine transparence entre les autorités sanitaires et les dirigeants communautaires; 3) la réalisation d'échanges de connaissances sur les pratiques de SMNE entre les chefs de file en matière de SMNE et les fournisseurs de soins du Guatemala et du Canada; 4) la formation de sages-femmes traditionnelles et de promoteurs de la santé communautaires relativement aux méthodes de planification familiale et la prestation de services de consultation sur la planification familiale aux femmes et aux hommes. Ce projet devrait contribuer directement à améliorer la santé d'environ 240 000 personnes à Totonicapán, y compris 140 000 femmes autochtones ainsi que 37 000 garçons et 39 000 filles. En outre, on s'attend à ce que plus de 250 000 personnes profitent indirectement des résultats du projet. This project aims to improve m...aternal, newborn, and child health services for up to 260,000 women and 140,500 children in Artibonite province. It supports the rehabilitation of nine maternity clinics and seven community health centres and includes repairing infrastructure, installing equipment, and providing staff training. Five of the maternity clinics offer basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care. The other four offer a higher level of care, including caesarean sections and blood transfusions. The community clinics offer basic services for children under five years of age in remote rural areas, including routine vaccinations, vitamin A distribution, growth monitoring, oral rehydration therapy, and deworming. The project supports 40 water and sanitation initiatives that aim to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera and improve coordination and referrals between community and province-wide service providers. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment. This project has two components. It has been divided for administrative reasons. / Ce projet vise à améliorer les services en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants pour jusqu'à 260 000 femmes et 140 500 enfants dans la province de l'Artibonite. Il appuie la remise en état de neuf cliniques d'obstétrique et sept centres de santé communautaires, y compris la réparation des infrastructures, l'installation d'équipements et la formation du personnel. Cinq des cliniques d'obstétrique s'occupent de soins obstétricaux et néonatals d'urgence, tandis que les quatre autres dispensent des soins plus poussés, y compris des césariennes et des transfusions sanguines. Les cliniques communautaires offrent quant à elles, des services de base destinés aux enfants de moins de cinq ans dans les régions rurales isolées, notamment des services de vaccination systématique, de distribution de suppléments de vitamine A, de suivi de la croissance, de réhydratation par voie orale et de déparasitage. Le projet appuie 40 initiatives d'approvisionnement en eau et d'assainissement, en vue de prévenir la propagation de maladies comme le choléra et d'améliorer le système d'aiguillage et la coordination entre les services communautaires et les services offerts à l'échelle provinciale. Ce projet fait partie de l'engagement du Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants. Ce projet a deux composantes. Il a été divisé pour des raisons administratives.

Ce projet vise à contribuer ... la réduction de la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile à travers une approche globale et intégrée favorisant un continuum des soins dans sept communes en Haiti. Le projet vise à renforcer le système sanitaire et à rendre plus accessibles des compléments essentiels en micronutriments pour les femmes enceintes, les femmes allaitantes et les enfants de moins de cinq ans. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

DEREJUV supports the Governmen...t of Honduras Plan for the Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancies by strengthening national policies and expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services for Honduran youth. The project helps prevent adolescent pregnancies and child, early and forced marriages and expands access to adolescent-friendly health services for over 211,000 girls, boys and adolescents in 24 municipalities with some of the highest national rates of adolescent pregnancies by installing adolescent-friendly clinics in community health centers and schools. The project also develops the advocacy and participation skills of girls, boys, adolescents and their families to empower them to participate in municipal programs for the prevention of adolescent pregnancies, develop life skills and complete their education through institutional support and peer-mentoring.Project activities include: 1) technical assistance to develop and implement legislation, policies, norms and standards to prevent adolescent pregnancies; 2) setting up adolescent-friendly health clinics in community health centers and high schools; 3) training for health care professionals on adolescent-friendly health services such as counselling, sexual and reproductive health care and pre- and post-natal care; 4) dissemination of gender-sensitive and age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education for girls and boys in target communities; 5) design and implement municipal action plans to prevent adolescent pregnancies./ DEREJUV appuiele plan du gouvernement du Honduras pour la prévention des grossesses chez les adolescents en renforçant les politiques nationales et en augmentant l'accès aux services de santé sexuels et reproductifs des jeunes du Honduras. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya. / Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions. Malawi has high rates of mater...nal mortality despite concerted efforts to increase the rate of births at health facilities. In response, the Ministry of Health implemented a Standards-Based Management and Recognition for Reproductive Health initiative to improve the quality of health services. Similar initiatives have proven successful in other countries. However, to date, only limited improvements have been observed in Malawi, and no improvements were noted in the quality of care during labour and delivery. This project will further assess the implementation of this initiative and its impact on the quality of maternal health care in Malawi. The researchers will look at the context on the ground and how it has impacted implementation. Their aim is to provide the Ministry of Health with information and recommendations to improve the quality of and access to care. A particular focus of the study will be on women's experiences of care.Researchers will produce knowledge in conjunction with key stakeholders, including the public and policymakers, to make recommendations for the implementation of the Standards-Based Management and Recognition for Reproductive Health initiative in Malawi. Research findings will be presented at strategic forums in the country as well as at conferences. The information will also be published in peer-reviewed journals. This initiative aims to build ...local and facility-level capacity and accountability in order to reduce barriers that prevent pregnant women and mothers from utilizing sexual and reproductive health services in one province of Afghanistan and two regions in Malawi.The populations in both Afghanistan and Malawi face many challenges when it comes to accessing necessary medical care, particularly for pregnant women, and children. This has led to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Major factors that contribute to high mortality rates in both countries include long distances to health centres, a lack of skilled health professionals, and a lack of information regarding sexual and reproductive health. Project activities include: (1) improving the quality and supply of services at the facility level by improving the skills and approaches of health-care workers, as well as ensuring that the facilities and tools themselves are of standard quality and availability; (2) expanding demand for health services, and addressing gender gaps by increasing women's decision-making for their own and their children's health; and (3) increasing male support for women's decision making, increasing community participation in sexual and reproductive health, and changing behaviour that puts women and girls at risk. As a result, vulnerable groups will proactively seek and advocate for health services.This project targets 174,701 direct beneficiaries and 622,132 indirect beneficiaries.The Organization is implementing this project in collaboration with Community World Service Asia in Afghanistan, and in Malawi with Embangweni Mission Hospital (EMH) of Livingstonia Health Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterians (CCAP), and Mulanje Mission Hospital (MMH) of the CCAP Synod of Blantyre/Le projet vise à développer la responsabilisation, la capacité locale et celle des établissements à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes enceintes et les mères d'utiliser les services de santé génésique dans une province d'Afghanistan et deux régions du Malawi.Aussi bien en Afghanistan qu'au Malawi, les membres des collectivités, en particulier les femmes enceintes et les enfants, sont confrontés à de nombreuses difficultés d'accès à des soins médicaux. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. This project builds on a previ...ous initiative supported by DFATD supporting the Mali Red Cross' efforts towards the Government of Mali's plans to reduce maternal and child mortality in the regions of Koulikoro and Sikasso. Initiative activities include: (1) raising awareness in communities on MNCH services available and ways to prevent illness through proper hygiene and sanitation; (2) training professional and community health workers, including volunteers, in the delivery and promotion of integrated packages of MNCH services; (3) training health staff in improved MNCH delivery, covering aspects such as management of service delivery, supervision of health workers, and procurement of medicines and supplies; (4) training health staff to collect, analyse and use administrative MNCH data to plan for improved MNCH service delivery and essentially improved health outcomes; and, (5) equipping health facilities with essential supplies and equipment. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.1 million women, men, adolescents, children and newborns. In addition, approximately 3.2 million adults and children are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Canadian Red Cross Society with the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children; and in collaboration with the local partner, the Mali Red Cross society. / Le projet table sur un projet antérieur appuyé par le MAECD qui vient en aide à la Croix-Rouge malienne pour mettre en oeuvre les plans du gouvernement du Mali visant à réduire la mortalité chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions de Koulikoro et de Sikasso. Despite progress on reducing c...hild mortality, newborn mortality is declining at a slower pace and preterm birth complications is the single most significant cause of newborn mortality.This project aims to contribute to the reduction of preterm birth rates through an integrated approach addressing lifestyle, infection, nutrition and contraception (LINC) factors. Through a health consortium - led by World Vision Canada, and including Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada - this project is addressing the LINC factors in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Mali to reduce the incidence of preterm birth and its related complications.Project activities include: (1) training of facility healthcare workers and community health workers on high quality care for pregnant women and newborns; (2) upgrading of health facilities and provision of essential supplies; (3) strengthening of referral systems by providing training to front line service providers; (4) conducting outreach activities to address knowledge gaps related to healthy pregnancies and prevention of preterm birth; (5) empowering women's self-confidence, negotiation and leadership skills by conducting awareness raising at the community level (6) improving data collection and registration on birth, death and still birth by providing training to health care providers and updating reporting tools; (7) documenting and sharing of evidence-based best practices with regional and national policy and decision makers./ En dépit des progrès réalisés dans la réduction du taux de mortalité infantile, le taux de mortalité néonatale diminue plus lentement et les complications relatives aux naissances prématurées sont la principale cause de mortalité néonatale.L'objectif de ce projet est de contribuer à la réduction des taux de naissance prématurée au moyen d'une approche intégrée qui tient compte des facteurs liés au style de vie, aux maladies, à l'alimentation et à la contraception. Latin America is home to the g...reatest inequities in the world, including inequality in access to quality health services. Indigenous peoples have the poorest health in the region, due to such factors as geographic isolation, limited access to safe water, sanitation and food, and a poor understanding of, and sensitivity to, cultural beliefs and practices. Among the indicators of greatest concern is the high rate of maternal mortality. Indigenous women consistently experience higher maternal mortality rates than non-indigenous women in Latin America. Efforts to improve maternal health for indigenous women and adolescent girls must be based on a clear understanding of how to provide and measure high-quality care that ensures adequate health outcomes with dignity. This project examines quality of care from a cultural and a technical perspective in three indigenous communities in Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. Each of these three case studies will explore perceptions of quality care among indigenous women, and will involve collection and analysis of data using a customized framework for quality of care indicators. The study will examine the implementation of integrated health service delivery networks in all the three countries. These networks are designed to coordinate different health providers and services and each country is implementing them differently. The three case studies will examine how the networks positively or negatively influence quality of care processes and outcomes. Results from the individual case studies and from the project as a whole are expected to inform strategies for scaling up efforts to improve quality of maternal care for indigenous populations. Expected outputs include scientific publications in Spanish- and English-language journals, and information sharing via community groups, the local press and social media.

Too many women in Mozambique c...ontinue to die in childbirth, especially in northern Nampula province. This project will provide support to health system stakeholders to develop lasting solutions to the problem. Specifically, it will strengthen the continuum of maternal health care between the community and health facility in Marrere, Mozambique.Despite some progress in reducing maternal mortality, the Trends in Maternal Mortality: 1990 to 2015 report by WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, World Bank Group, and the United Nations Population Division confirms a maternal mortality ratio of 489 per 100,000 live births in Mozambique. An estimated 11% of maternal deaths are AIDS-related, one of the five highest rates globally. UNFPA's groundbreaking 2013 report, Adolescent Pregnancy, confirmed that Mozambique also has one of the five highest rates of adolescent pregnancy in the world. In total, 42% of women aged 20-24 give birth by age 18. Within Mozambique, Nampula province has one of the highest adolescent birth rates with 210 out of 1,000 adolescent girls giving birth between ages 15 and 19. The UK medical journal, Lancet, noted that the province also has lower usage of health facility delivery and postnatal care services compared to the rest of the country.Research partnership for healthThe Universidade Lurio will collaborate with the University of Saskatchewan to design research to address these challenges. Their goal is to create an evidence base, support stakeholder engagement, and build consensus on priority research questions.The Universidade Lurio has a strong partnership with the Nampula province Ministry of Health and Marrere community members. Through their One Student, One Family program, 700 health science students visit and track neighbouring families during their years of study. The university will build on these relationships to explore innovative solutions that can be applied to the Nampula and Marrere contexts. The project team will also strengthen links with national stakeholders to lay the foundation for scaling up positive innovations.This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

This project aims to improve t...he health of women and newborns in Zambezia province, the second most populous province with some of the worst health indicators in Mozambique. Typically, strategies to increase the number of women giving birth in health care facilities and the number of pregnant women using health services focus on increasing the number of facilities or the numbers of health workers. This pilot project uses an innovative voucher scheme, which offsets transportation and other costs, to provide incentives to encourage pregnant women to seek health care attention during pregnancy and childbirth as well as for their newborns. The project aims to help 100,000 women receive pre-natal care, safe delivery, and post-natal care services in participating government health facilities. / Ce projet a pour but d'améliorer la santé des femmes et des nouveau-nés en Zambezia, deuxième province la plus peuplée du Mozambique et l'une de celles qui affichent les pires indicateurs en matière de santé. D'habitude, les stratégies visant à accroitre le nombre de femmes qui accouchent dans les établissements de soins de santé et le nombre de femmes enceintes qui utilisent les services de santé consistent principalement à augmenter le nombre d'établissements ou de travailleurs de la santé. Ce projet pilote emploie un régime novateur de remise de bons, qui compensent les coûts de transport et autres, pour inciter les femmes enceintes à obtenir des soins de santé pour elles pendant la grossesse et l'accouchement ainsi que pour leurs nouveau-nés. Il vise à aider 100 000 femmes à recevoir des services de santé génésique (soins prénatals, natals et postnatals) dans les établissements de santé du gouvernement participants.

This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities; (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries; (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery; (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities; (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food; and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania./ Le projet vise à réduire les maladies et la mortalité chez les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. This project will support the ...health and rights of women by improving the provision of health services to women and adolescent girls (15-19 years) in three underserved areas in Nampula and reducing the risks of Child, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM), and early pregnancy. Project activities include: (1) conducting radio programmes and mobilization events on sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, early pregnancy and CEFM in 60 villages; (2) establishing father, mother-to-mother and adolescent clubs as community support groups; (3) orienting madrinhas†(traditional sexual health counselors) and traditional birth attendants on mentorship for Adolescent Reproductive Health issues; (4) training health care providers on gender-responsive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health and Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care; and (5) developing a provincial action plan on maternal, newborn and child health topics including CEFM and pregnancy, with 14 semi-annual national and provincial Coalition meetings to end child marriage. Les activités de projet sont les suivantes : (1) mettre sur pied des programmes radio et des événements mobilisateurs portant sur la santé sexuelle et reproductrice, l'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes, les grossesses précoces et les MEPF dans 60 villages; (2) établir des groupes de soutien communautaires pour pères, de mère-à-mère et pour adolescents; (3) présenter le mentorat sur les questions de santé reproductive des adolescents aux « madrinhas » (conseillers traditionnels en matière de santé sexuelle) et aux sages-femmes traditionnelles; (4) former les prestataires de soins de santé sur la santé sexuelle et reproductive sensible au genre et aux besoins des adolescents, et sur les soins de base obstétricaux et néonatals d'urgence; et (5) élaborer un plan d'action provincial portant sur la santé maternelle, néonatale et des enfants, incluant les MEPF et la grossesse, dont 14 réunions semestrielles de la Coalition nationale et provinciale pour mettre fin au mariage des enfants. Il est attendu que ce projet atteigne 45 000 bénéficiaires directs et près de 800 000 bénéficiaires indirects, dont 120 720 femmes en âge de procréer dans la province de Nampula.

The Enhance Mother, newborn, a...nd child health in remote areas through health care and community engagement (EMBRACE) initiative aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to grow healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), and including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI). / Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques en tablant sur un projet antérieur de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) au Cambodge. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la SMNE et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés, hommes et femmes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly. Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya. / Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions.
