This project will address high... maternal and newborn mortality in Tanzania by adapting and implementing a maternal and newborn health intervention approach that follows the MamaToto process.Health care in rural TanzaniaThe rural regions of Geita and Mwanza have some of the worst maternal and child health indicators in the country. Local health facilities are under-resourced and possess limited management capacity. While the national policy calls for a community health-worker program, the reality is that there are gaps in coordinating and implementing community health services at local levels. Community health-workers have limited training and supervision. The Government of Tanzania's new commitment to improving mothers and children's well-being needs evidence that will support the creation of stronger health systems through community-based interventions. The MamaToto approachThis project draws on the low-cost MamaToto (mother-baby) process implemented in Uganda, where substantial gains in maternal and child health were achieved. These gains took place through an approach that strengthened services at health facilities and within communities. This project will implement and evaluate a modified version of MamaToto in rural Tanzania, aligned with the country's current policy guidance for community health services. The project team will engage district leaders, strengthen facility services, and develop the role of community health workers. They will demonstrate if and how community-based interventions can reduce maternal and child mortality by effectively bringing low-cost program efforts to scale under government leadership.This project aims to scale up national maternal and child health programs that will improve survival rates for mothers and children. Based on these interventions, the project team will develop an implementation package that includes lessons learned, tools, and other materials to allow other jurisdictions to undertake similar initiatives.Project partnersThis project is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. The program is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD), Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

One woman dies in childbirth i...n Tanzania every hour. With such high rates of maternal and newborn mortality, this project will address the problem by giving community health workers greater skills to assess and treat women, while extending the healthcare system's reach to rural women and newborns. Rural obstacles to better healthIn the Mara region of Tanzania, nearly 60% of births occur outside of health facilities. A high proportion of these births result in poor outcomes for the mother, newborn, or both. Reducing maternal and newborn deaths in Tanzania involves overcoming barriers to accessing rural healthcare facilities and improving access to quality community health care. These barriers include: -lack of qualified human resources-long distances to health facilities-high cost and poor availability of transportation-lack of knowledge of the risks related to non-facility births-cultural beliefs about avoiding professional careExtending health care's reachThe project team will train community healthcare workers to improve how they assess and treat women and infants, and extend health care to rural areas. They will evaluate interventions to improve antenatal care and delivery, such as prenatal vitamins and travel vouchers to get women to health facilities for screening of hypertensive disorders, HIV, and other conditions. Community health workers will use mobile phones to improve routine processes such as birth registration and monitoring stocks and workflows.The research team will generate evidence on sustainable interventions for delivering community-based primary health care in Tanzania that improves access to antenatal care and skilled delivery. They will focus on ways to enhance the knowledge and role of community health workers and to increase their use of mobile health (mhealth). The project will help guide policymakers at all levels of government to explore scaling up interventions that can improve outcomes for mothers and newborns. The goal of this project is to... improve the health of women and girls, especially mothers, in six districts of the Tabora region. It aims to reduce the barriers that prevent women in rural areas from getting access to the health services they require, to provide better-quality health services for mothers and children in rural areas, and to improve the ability of community health management teams to deliver quality health services. The project enhances women s ability to pay for health services; improves the knowledge and skills of health workers; and improves the ability of district-level health management teams to plan, budget, manage, monitor, and evaluate the health services provided in their districts. The project also builds on the government s community-based health worker program by training volunteer health workers to provide health education and information to women and their households. The project is expected to provide quality health services to over 400,000 women and adolescent girls and to 5,800 newborns. CARE Canada implements the project in collaboration with CARE Tanzania. CARE Tanzania works with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and international and local non-governmental organizations to address gaps in health services at the community and district levels. This project is part of Canada s maternal, newborn and child health commitment. / L objectif de ce projet est d améliorer la santé des femmes et des filles, en particulier des mères, dans six districts de la région de Tabora. Il vise à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes des régions rurales d avoir accès aux services de santé dont elles ont besoin, à fournir des services de santé de meilleure qualité pour les mères et les enfants dans les régions rurales et à accroître les capacités des équipes de gestion de la santé communautaire à fournir des services de santé de qualité. Le projet permet d accroître la capacité des femmes à payer pour des services de santé, d améliorer les connaissances et les compétences des travailleurs de la santé et de renforcer les capacités des équipes de gestion de la santé communautaire des districts à planifier, à budgéter, à gérer, à contrôler et à évaluer les services de santé fournis dans leurs districts. The project aims to improve ac...cess to quality health services for poor pregnant women and their newborns in Dar es Salaam and surrounding areas. There is currently a critical shortage in such services leading to unnecessary maternal and newborn deaths.The project focuses on (1) enhancing the skills of health management teams and health care providers in 22 public health facilities to provide quality gender-sensitive maternal and newborn services in emergency situations, (2) improving the standard operating procedures in these facilities, and (3) recruiting, staffing and training health care workers for a new specialized Maternity and Newborn Hospital in Dar es Salaam. The project benefits over 600 health care workers by improving their clinical skills, their work environment and the support and supervision they receive from health management teams. It also benefits more than 500,000 pregnant women and their newborns by improving the quality of care they receive.The partner organization, Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania, works with the Government of Tanzania's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to implement this project.This project is part of Canada's maternal, newborn and child health commitment./ Le projet vise à améliorer l'accès aux services de santé de qualité pour les femmes enceintes pauvres et leurs nouveau-nés à Dar es Salaam et dans les régions avoisinantes. Il y a actuellement une pénurie critique de ces services qui mène à des décès évitables de mères et de nouveau-nés.Le projet se concentre sur 1) le renforcement des compétences des équipes de gestion de la santé et des fournisseurs de soins de santé dans 22 établissements de santé publique à fournir des services de qualité mieux adaptés aux femmes et à leur nouveau-nés, dans des situations d'urgence, 2) l'amélioration des procédures d'exploitation standard dans ces installations et 3) le recrutement, la dotation et la formation du personnel en santé pour un nouvel hôpital spécialisé en maternité et nouveau-nés à Dar es Salaam. The project seeks to increase the coverage of quality emergency obstetric care, newborn and child health services, and high impact nutrition interventions to all ten regions, benefitting more than 75,000 pregnant women, 130,000 mothers and 390,000 children and youth.Some project activities include: (1) purchasing essential medicines, supplies and equipment for maternal, newborn and child health services; (2) supporting training programs for assistant medical officers and nurses on comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care and anaesthesia; (3) supporting e-learning and training that includes the use of multimedia material on difficulties and life-threatening complications that can occur during pregnancy or child birth, such as high blood pressure or loss of blood after child birth; (4) building the ability of tutors, clinical instructors and preceptors to teach best practices in service delivery for maternal, newborn and child health; (5) training health workers and community health workers on newborn and child care; (6) promoting care seeking behaviour to pregnant women, mothers and caregivers of children under the age of five and adolescents; and (7) refurbishing and equipping district hospitals, cottage hospitals, maternity hospitals and health centres providing maternity services./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants à Zanzibar en y renforçant le système de santé et la capacité des travailleurs de la santé à fournir des services de santé qui sauvent des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants. This project aims to improve m...aternal, newborn and child health in Zanzibar, by strengthening its health system and the ability of its health workers to deliver live-saving health services to mothers, newborns and children. The project seeks to increase the coverage of quality emergency obstetric care, newborn and child health services, and high impact nutrition interventions to all ten regions, benefitting more than 75,000 pregnant women, 130,000 mothers and 390,000 children and youth.Some project activities include: (1) purchasing essential medicines, supplies and equipment for maternal, newborn and child health services; (2) supporting training programs for assistant medical officers and nurses on comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care and anaesthesia; (3) supporting e-learning and training that includes the use of multimedia material on difficulties and life-threatening complications that can occur during pregnancy or child birth, such as high blood pressure or loss of blood after child birth; (4) building the ability of tutors, clinical instructors and preceptors to teach best practices in service delivery for maternal, newborn and child health; (5) training health workers and community health workers on newborn and child care; (6) promoting care seeking behaviour to pregnant women, mothers and caregivers of children under the age of five and adolescents; and (7) refurbishing and equipping district hospitals, cottage hospitals, maternity hospitals and health centres providing maternity services./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants à Zanzibar en y renforçant le système de santé et la capacité des travailleurs de la santé à fournir des services de santé qui sauvent des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants. Implementing comprehensive, co...mmunity-focused primary health care is a major challenge in post-conflict regions such as South Sudan and neighbouring Northern Uganda. South Sudan is recovering from two decades of civil war that have destroyed education and health infrastructure. Torit Hospital, one of the major hospitals in the region, is poorly staffed and lacks specialists and basic equipment. The situation is similar in Northern Uganda. In the District of Gulu, the burden of disease has largely been managed through St. Mary's Hospital Lacor. This region has not been able to achieve the progress in maternal and child health that has been reached in the central part of Uganda.This project assesses the implementation and scale of community-focused reproductive and child health interventions in post-conflict settings. It focuses on establishing evidence to promote sustainability and resilience, with the goal of ensuring access to essential health services by vulnerable populations. The researchers will explore strategies for improved maternal care and child nutrition services, cervical cancer screening, and support for women's empowerment through outreach efforts from the two hospitals. Research findings will be validated through ministries of health at the local, district, and national levels to optimize engagement and to encourage adoption of the project's recommendations to strengthen systems. The results of the study will directly inform the ministries of health in South Sudan and in Uganda on related interventions, including a scalable model for improved community-based services. This will address barriers to interventions, reduce maternal and child mortality, and extend the reach of health services to communities that have faced shocks and stressors.This is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative, a seven year, $CA36 million multi-donor partnership funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.Objectives /

The project's first component ...will address urgent healthcare needs of pregnant women, mothers and young children (both male and female). It aims to improve access of 250,000 children (at least 50% girls) to essential and life-saving neonatal healthcare services. It also aims to improve access of 100,000 pregnant women to emergency obstetric healthcare and quality postnatal services. The project's second component is expected to improve the overall protection of the targeted communities through improving their access to basic WASH services to sustain livelihoods and avoid displacement. It will also support the WASH advocacy strategy, and improve the coordination platforms. This is one of the projects that make up the 2015 Humanitarian Program Cycle (HPC) for the West Bank and Gaza. The main activities to be delivered include: • Provision and prepositioning of neonatal, paediatric and maternal life -saving drugs and medical consumables for newborns and children in hospital care. • Provision of essential basic medical equipment to emergency care services with focus on neonatal units, rehabilitation centers and mobile health teams. • Training of health professionals to provide enhanced quality neonatal, post -natal and maternal care services, and health services for children with developmental delays and disabilities. • Construction of transmission pipeline, filling points and simple water networks. • Provision of a water tanker truck. • Enhancement and increase of water storage capacity and cistern rehabilitation. • Promotion of good hygiene practices through awareness raising sessions focusing on hand washing with soap, saving/recycling of water, chlorination and cistern management will be provided to women and men at household and community level. • Advocacy campaigns conducted at national and international levels, including publication of reports and case studies to ensure exchange of information and lessons learned. / Le premier volet du projet portera sur les besoins urgents des femmes enceintes, des mères et des jeunes enfants (filles et garçons) en matière de soins de santé. Le projet vise à permettre à 250 000 enfants (au moins 50 % de filles) d'avoir un meilleur accès à des services de soins de santé néonatals essentiels et urgents. Il vise également à permettre à 100 000 femmes enceintes d'avoir un meilleur accès à des soins de santé obstétriques urgents et à des services postnatals de qualité. Le deuxième volet du projet devrait permettre d'améliorer la protection générale des collectivités ciblées en améliorant leur accès aux services d'eau, d'assainissement et d'hygiène de base afin de garantir leurs moyens de subsistance et d'éviter leur déplacement. The Aga Khan Development Netwo...rk's Health Action Plan for Afghanistan (HAPA) is a five-year, multi-donor initiative that aims to improve the health status of the population in selected provinces of Afghanistan (Badakhshan, Bamyan, and Baghlan), with a focus on women of reproductive age and children under five. HAPA works at the national level with health education and training institutions and the Ministry of Public Health. This initiative aims to build ...local and facility-level capacity and accountability in order to reduce barriers that prevent pregnant women and mothers from utilizing sexual and reproductive health services in one province of Afghanistan and two regions in Malawi.The populations in both Afghanistan and Malawi face many challenges when it comes to accessing necessary medical care, particularly for pregnant women, and children. This has led to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Major factors that contribute to high mortality rates in both countries include long distances to health centres, a lack of skilled health professionals, and a lack of information regarding sexual and reproductive health. Project activities include: (1) improving the quality and supply of services at the facility level by improving the skills and approaches of health-care workers, as well as ensuring that the facilities and tools themselves are of standard quality and availability; (2) expanding demand for health services, and addressing gender gaps by increasing women's decision-making for their own and their children's health; and (3) increasing male support for women's decision making, increasing community participation in sexual and reproductive health, and changing behaviour that puts women and girls at risk. As a result, vulnerable groups will proactively seek and advocate for health services.This project targets 174,701 direct beneficiaries and 622,132 indirect beneficiaries.The Organization is implementing this project in collaboration with Community World Service Asia in Afghanistan, and in Malawi with Embangweni Mission Hospital (EMH) of Livingstonia Health Department of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterians (CCAP), and Mulanje Mission Hospital (MMH) of the CCAP Synod of Blantyre/Le projet vise à développer la responsabilisation, la capacité locale et celle des établissements à réduire les obstacles qui empêchent les femmes enceintes et les mères d'utiliser les services de santé génésique dans une province d'Afghanistan et deux régions du Malawi.Aussi bien en Afghanistan qu'au Malawi, les membres des collectivités, en particulier les femmes enceintes et les enfants, sont confrontés à de nombreuses difficultés d'accès à des soins médicaux. Ceci cause des taux élevés de mortalité chez les mères et les nouveau-nés. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results./ Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. more
|
Latin America is home to the g...reatest inequities in the world, including inequality in access to quality health services. Indigenous peoples have the poorest health in the region, due to such factors as geographic isolation, limited access to safe water, sanitation and food, and a poor understanding of, and sensitivity to, cultural beliefs and practices. Among the indicators of greatest concern is the high rate of maternal mortality. Indigenous women consistently experience higher maternal mortality rates than non-indigenous women in Latin America. Efforts to improve maternal health for indigenous women and adolescent girls must be based on a clear understanding of how to provide and measure high-quality care that ensures adequate health outcomes with dignity. This project examines quality of care from a cultural and a technical perspective in three indigenous communities in Mexico, Peru, and Argentina. Each of these three case studies will explore perceptions of quality care among indigenous women, and will involve collection and analysis of data using a customized framework for quality of care indicators. The study will examine the implementation of integrated health service delivery networks in all the three countries. These networks are designed to coordinate different health providers and services and each country is implementing them differently. The three case studies will examine how the networks positively or negatively influence quality of care processes and outcomes. Results from the individual case studies and from the project as a whole are expected to inform strategies for scaling up efforts to improve quality of maternal care for indigenous populations. Expected outputs include scientific publications in Spanish- and English-language journals, and information sharing via community groups, the local press and social media.

The project focuses on the first two phases of Grand Challenges Canada's (GCC) innovation platform. In the first phase, GCC provides small grants to innovators to conduct research and develop promising innovative ideas to address MNCH challenges. The second phase includes testing and piloting innovations, developing strategic partnerships, leveraging private sector funding and know-how and business and marketing plans to enable their further development. In this phase, funding is awarded to Canadian and LMIC innovators who have demonstrated their innovation works and can be prepared for take up by the private sector, international organizations and LMIC governments. Over 300 innovations in the first phase and up to 100 innovations in the second phase will be implemented over 10 years. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la vie des femmes, des nouveau-nés et des enfants de moins de cinq ans vivant dans des pays à revenu faible ou intermédiaire en offrant des fonds et du soutien technique aux innovateurs qui ont identifié des solutions aux problèmes concernant la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE). This project aims to support t...he Global Financing Facility (GFF), a multi-donor financing platform that provides country-led, sustainable financing to end preventable maternal, newborn, and child deaths. The GFF finances national reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) plans, supports countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of RMNCH, finances the strengthening of civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems, finances the development and deployment of global public goods, and contributes to a coordinated financing for RMNCH.Project activities will vary depending on the RMNCH priorities of the recipient government, but may include: (1) Clinical interventions such as increasing access to health services and health facilities from the pre-pregnancy stage onwards for women, newborns and children, (2) Health systems interventions such as strengthening health information systems, increasing access to medical products/technologies, and health systems strengthening; (3) Multi-sectoral interventions such as education, nutrition, and water and sanitation, in addition to strengthening CRVS systems.The GFF supports countries in developing individual RMNCH investment cases to align various sources of financing to national RMNCH priorities. The GFF leverages additional financing for RMNCH by matching grant funding from the GFF Trust Fund to financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). GFF country selection is prioritized on the basis of criteria that includes available resources, need, population and income, eligibility for IDA/IBRD loans and the ability to achieve results./ Ce projet vise à appuyer le Mécanisme de financement mondial (MFM), une plateforme de financement multidonateurs qui fournit des fonds durables gérés par le pays pour mettre fin aux décès évitables de mères, de nouveau-nés et d'enfants. This project seeks to improve ...the health of the population in all districts of Bangladesh by strengthening the Bangladesh Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's management of the public health care system and by improving public health services. The project forms the cornerstone of Canada's support for achieving development objectives in the health sector in Bangladesh and its main focus is to help implement the Ministry's Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Development Program. The project activities include: (1) improving the financial management of the Ministry's aid budget; (2) procuring obstetric drugs and family planning supplies in low performing districts with high maternal, newborn and child mortality rates; (3) updating the regulatory framework for the accreditation of health personnel; (4) improving the planning, development and management of human resources for health; (5) increasing the availability of maternal health services; and (6) developing and implementing a monitoring and evaluation plan within the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. As with all pooled funding initiatives, Canada is working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Bangladesh to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability. This project is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors, which include the World Bank, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, Germany and the United States. / Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé de l'ensemble de la population vivant dans les districts du Bangladesh, en renforçant la gestion du système public de soins de santé par le ministère de la Santé et du Bien-être de la famille et en améliorant les services de santé publique. Il représente la pierre angulaire de l'aide fournie par le Canada pour atteindre les objectifs de développement dans le secteur de la santé au Bangladesh et vise essentiellement à aider le Ministère à mettre en oeuvre son programme de développement des secteurs de la santé, de la population et de la nutrition. Despite progress on reducing c...hild mortality, newborn mortality is declining at a slower pace and preterm birth complications is the single most significant cause of newborn mortality.This project aims to contribute to the reduction of preterm birth rates through an integrated approach addressing lifestyle, infection, nutrition and contraception (LINC) factors. Through a health consortium - led by World Vision Canada, and including Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada - this project is addressing the LINC factors in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Mali to reduce the incidence of preterm birth and its related complications.Project activities include: (1) training of facility healthcare workers and community health workers on high quality care for pregnant women and newborns; (2) upgrading of health facilities and provision of essential supplies; (3) strengthening of referral systems by providing training to front line service providers; (4) conducting outreach activities to address knowledge gaps related to healthy pregnancies and prevention of preterm birth; (5) empowering women's self-confidence, negotiation and leadership skills by conducting awareness raising at the community level (6) improving data collection and registration on birth, death and still birth by providing training to health care providers and updating reporting tools; (7) documenting and sharing of evidence-based best practices with regional and national policy and decision makers./ En dépit des progrès réalisés dans la réduction du taux de mortalité infantile, le taux de mortalité néonatale diminue plus lentement et les complications relatives aux naissances prématurées sont la principale cause de mortalité néonatale.L'objectif de ce projet est de contribuer à la réduction des taux de naissance prématurée au moyen d'une approche intégrée qui tient compte des facteurs liés au style de vie, aux maladies, à l'alimentation et à la contraception. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition.Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

This initiative aims to reduce... illness and death among women of reproductive age, newborns and children under five by working with local health authorities.. Activities include: (1) training women and men health workers and traditional birth attendants to dispense accurate advice on ante and post-natal care, promote healthy habits, provide basic health care, identify high risk pregnancies and make referrals to government-run medical facilities; (2) equipping a select number of health centers with essential equipment to reduce infection, monitor vital signs of fetuses and facilitate night time deliveries; (3) constructing dispensaries, nurses' houses and expectant mothers' houses to encourage facility based delivery; (4) providing rapid and affordable transport to medical facilities; (5) improving access to clean water and nutritious food; and (6) mobilizing and equipping communities and village leaders for sustainability of MNCH and gender results. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health and nutrition of approximately 2 million women, men and children and in addition, around 1 million individuals.The project is implemented with local partners in each country: VHW in Burundi, EHALE in Mozambique, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Partners in Health) in Rwanda, and the Anglican Diocese of Masasi n Tanzania./ Le projet vise à réduire les maladies et la mortalité chez les femmes en âge de procréer, les nouveau-nés et les enfants de moins de cinq ans, en collaboration avec les autorités de santé locales. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) formation des travailleurs de la santé (hommes et femmes) et des accoucheuses traditionnelles pour qu'ils puissent donner des conseils éclairés sur les soins prénataux et postnataux, promouvoir des habitudes saines, offrir des soins de santé de base, repérer les grossesses à haut risque et orienter les patientes vers les établissements de santé gouvernementaux; 2) approvisionnement d'un certain nombre de centres de santé en équipement essentiel à la réduction des infections, à la surveillance des signes vitaux des fœtus et à la facilitation des accouchements de nuit; 3) construction de dispensaires et de résidences pour les infirmières et les femmes enceintes afin de favoriser l'accouchement dans un établissement; 4) création de moyens de transport rapides et abordables vers les établissements de santé; 5) amélioration de l'accès à l'eau potable et aux aliments nutritifs; 6) mobilisation et outillage des communautés et des dirigeants des villages pour leur permettre d'obtenir des résultats durables en matière de SMNE et d'égalité entre les sexes. The Maternal Newborn and Child... Health (MNCH) Training Support and Access Model (TSAM) initiative's objective is to establish a sustainable, cost-effective model of delivering training, providing continuing mentoring, coaching, and outreach for continuing professional development (CPD) in emergency care and access in MNCH. It builds on the model initiated by the University of Western Ontario under the Muskoka Initiative, directly addressing the ability of health care providers in district hospitals and the health centers to care for women, infants, and children presenting with complications before, during, and after birth including ensuring sustainability through the development of a cadre of well-trained professionals to continue the training and mentoring of other MNCH providers in the future. Activities include: 1) delivering workshops and short-term training sessions with MNCH mentors and coaches; 2) delivering workshops with nursing and midwifery faculty to integrate enhanced MNCH, gender and health concepts in the pediatric nursing and midwifery curriculum; and 3) providing support to strengthen programs in pediatric nursing and midwifery. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of 3,300 women, 1,800 men, 670 boys and 630 girls in targeted areas of Rwanda and Burundi needing emergency obstetrical and pediatric care, as well as the health care providers that are receiving the training. The University of Western Ontario is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Rwanda Medical and Dental Council, the National Council of Nursing and Midwifery, the Centre for Public Health and Development, and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Rwanda in Rwanda, and the Association de Gynecologie-obstetrique du Burundi, Association Burundaise de Pediatrie, Association National des Infirmieres at Infirmiers au Burundi, Universite du Burundi Ecole d medicine, Institut National de Sante Publique and International Medical Corps in Burundi. / L'initiative d'appui à un modèle de formation et d'accès à la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) a pour objectif d'établir un modèle abordable et viable afin d'offrir de la formation, un mentorat et un encadrement soutenu et de mieux faire connaitre le perfectionnement professionnel continu en matière de soins d'urgence et d'accès à la SMNE. This project is implemented by... a consortium led by L'AMIE with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) which aims to reduce the mortality rate among mothers and children in Burundi based on the achievements of a previous project on maternal, newborn and child. The program will use former beneficiaries of the project Integrated Prevention of HIV Transmission From Mother to Child (PMTCT) in Burundi, to lead community outreach. This approach, in addition to the availability of new services at the health center, will increase utilization of essential health services. The project will also aim to improve the delivery of essential health services for these clients by strengthening the capacity of health center staff. Project activities include: 1) the design and management of a new maternal and child health program; 2) the development and transmission of a participatory training program of community ambassadors for group awareness; 3) the registration and monitoring of pregnant women; 4) recruitment of Canadian experts (provided by the SOGC) for the training of local teams; 5) develop the presence of L'AMIE within social networks in order to increase the visibility of its public awareness activities. This project contributes directly to improving the health of approximately 64,000 people, including 50,000 children. In addition, more than 415,000 people will benefit indirectly. L'AMIE is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: APECOS (Association pour la prise en charge des orphelins du Sida) / Ce projet est mise en oeuvre par un consortium dirigé par L'AMIE avec la Société des obstétriciens et gynécologues du Canada (SOGC) qui vise à réduire le taux de mortalité chez les mères et les enfants au Burundi en se fondant sur les acquis d'un projet précédent sur la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile. Le programme fera appel à des ambassadeurs, anciens bénéficiaires du projet «Prévention intégrée de la transmission du VIH de la mère à l'enfant (PTME) au Burundi», qui effectueront un travail de sensibilisation de la communauté à la prévention en périnatalité. Cette approche, en plus de la disponibilité des nouveaux services au centre de santé, permettra d'augmenter le taux d'utilisation des services essentiels de santé. Le projet interviendra également au niveau de l'amélioration de la prestation de services de santé essentiels pour cette même clientèle en renforçant les capacités du personnel des centres de santé. Activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to grow healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative's results. This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Canada (ADRA), and including the Hincks-Dellcrest Institute (HDI) and Youth Challenge International (YCI). / Le projet vise à réduire les retards de croissance évitables et les décès chez les mères et les enfants dans les régions difficiles d'accès et périphériques en tablant sur un projet antérieur de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) au Cambodge. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la SMNE et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés, hommes et femmes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. Parmi les activités du projet : 1) séances de sensibilisation sur la SMNE et la nutrition pour les femmes en âge de procréer, de même que les membres des communautés, hommes et femmes; 2) formation des sages-femmes, des infirmières, des accoucheuses traditionnelles et des bénévoles communautaires en santé sur les méthodes d'accouchement sécuritaires; 3) construction et approvisionnement de cliniques et de salles d'accouchement pour les femmes enceintes; 4) approvisionnement en équipement et formation pour la culture d'aliments sains et diversifiés dans les potagers. On s'attend à ce que le projet contribue directement à l'amélioration de la santé d'environ 100 000 personnes, dont environ 33 000 enfants appartenant à des groupes vulnérables, notamment des minorités ethniques et des personnes déplacées qui reviennent chez elles. De plus, on s'attend à ce que 360 000 personnes bénéficient indirectement des résultats du projet. Le projet est mis en oeuvre grâce à un consortium dirigé par l'agence Adventist Development and Relief Canada, avec l'Institut Hincks-Dellcrest et Youth Challenge International.

The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition.The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations./ Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haïti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname.Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. This initiative aims to reduce... maternal and child mortality in 20 villages in Lubutu and Walikale, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Current interventions to support child and maternal health are inadequate with only 17.7% contraceptive prevalence rate, 42% of family planning needs being met, less than 44 % of women receiving proper antenatal care and an average of 63 % of children being fully immunized (measles, DTP, and Hib). Activities include: 1) Training health workers; Sensitizing Communities members living in 20 health areas about reproductive health, family planning tools, water, hygiene and sanitation; 2) Training community volunteers living in 20 health areas in reproductive health, family planning tools, water, hygiene and sanitation; 3) Sensitizing pregnant women living in 20 health areas in safe pregnancy delivery and motherhood; 4) Building and equipment of seven maternity wards with basic material, supplies and equipment; 5) Providing supplies and material to support family planning implementation to 20 health centers; 6) Equipment of 30 mobile units with material and supplies to deliver ante and post-natal care in remote areas; 7) Building six blocks of latrines and showers, seven medical waste incinerators, placenta and waste pits in seven new maternity wards; and, 8) providing clean water to 4 new maternity wards and surrounding community living within 500 meters. This initiative will directly reach 77,209 people. Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Jane Goodall Institute of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Programme National de Sante de la Reproduction - Maniema Province, and Programme National de Sante de la Reproduction - North Kivu Province. / Cette initiative vise à réduire le taux de mortalité des mères et des enfants dans 20 villages du Lubutu et Walikale, en République Démocratique du Congo (RDC). The project focuses on prevent...ing violence against children and youth and improving services for street children and at-risk families in five communes in Kinshasa. It does this by supporting outreach activities and programs that will improve the services offered at protection centres, health centres and in communities, taking into account the particular needs of girls and boys. The project also advocate s for adherence to and improvement of key child protection policies. Various mechanisms will be established to ensure that children and youth have the ability and opportunity to actively participate in and influence the nature of the services available to them and the decisions that affect them. / Le projet vise à prévenir la violence faite aux enfants et à améliorer les services offerts aux familles à risques et aux enfants de la rue dans cinq communes de Kinshasa. Pour ce faire, le projet appui des programmes et des activités communautaires qui amélioreront les services offerts dans les centres de protection et de santé des diverses communes, tout en prenant en compte les besoins particuliers des garçons et des filles. Le projet vise entre autres l'amélioration et le respect de politiques publiques clefs en matière de protection de l'enfant. Plusieurs mécanismes seront également mis en place afin que les enfants soient en mesure de pouvoir participer activement aux décisions qui les touchent de près ou qui portent sur la nature des services offerts à leur endroit.

The project focuses on support...ing and preventing violence against children and youth working in or around mining sites. By the end of the project 25,000 children and youth (50% male and 50% female) working in or around mines will be protected from violence, economic exploitation and sexual abuse. This will be achieved by establishing partnerships between mining companies, local authorities and communities for child protection and by strengthening local services including health services. The project will develop the competencies and capacities of community leaders and groups to advocate and negotiate for child protection measures and monitor their implementation. Children and youth will have the ability and opportunity to actively participate in their own protection through consultative committees, as peer educators, and through socio-economic and recreational activities. / Le projet vise à prévenir la violence faite aux enfants travaillant dans et autour des mines dans les provinces du Katanga et du Sud-Kivu. Au terme du projet, 25 000 de ces enfants (50% de filles et 50% de garçons) bénéficieront de mesures de protection contre la violence, l'exploitation économique et les abus sexuels. Ceci sera possible grâce à l'établissement de partenariats pour la protection des enfants entre les compagnies minières, les autorités locales ainsi que les communautés, et par le renforcement des services de santé. Le projet développera les compétences et les capacités des dirigeants et groupes communautaires afin qu'ils puissent négocier des mesures de protections pour les enfants et surveiller leur mise en oeuvre. Les enfants auront également l'opportunité de participer activement à la prévention de la violence, de l'exploitation économique et des abus sexuels dont ils sont victimes, grâce à la tenue de comités consultatifs et d'activités socio-économiques et récréationnelles.

This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. This project aims to reduce ma...ternal, neonatal and child mortality in select communities by working with local health authorities, and supporting the use of an integrated approach focused on health, nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.Project activities include: (1) training health facility and community-based health workers on provision of reproductive, maternal and child health services and best practices in sanitation and hygiene; (2) refurbishing or rehabilitating targeted health facilities with necessary infrastructure; (3) procuring and delivering essential equipment, supplies and medicines to health facilities; and (4) providing training and equipment to community-based health workers to promote improved nutrition and hygiene practices at the household level. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.7 million people, including 1 million women of reproductive age and over 650,000 children under five years of age.This project is implemented through a consortium led by Amref Health Africa in Canada, and international partners Christian Children's Fund of Canada, the Hospital for Sick Children and WaterAid Canada. In Ethiopia, Amref Canada is collaborating with Amref Ethiopia and Christian Children's Fund Ethiopia; in Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, Amref Canada is working with their local offices./Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile dans certaines communautés en travaillant avec les autorités sanitaires locales, en soutenant l'utilisation de l'approche intégrée axée sur la santé, la nutrition et de l'eau, l'assainissement et l'hygiène.Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) la formation du personnel de santé et des agents de santé communautaires sur la prestation de services de reproduction et de santé maternelle et infantile, et sur les meilleures pratiques en matière d'hygiène et d'assainissement; 2) la remise à neuf ou de réhabilitation ciblés des établissements de santé; 3) l'achat et la livraison de l'équipement essentiels, de fournitures et de médicaments aux établissements de santé; et 4) fourniture de la formation et d'équipements aux agents de santé communautaires pour promouvoir des pratiques nutritionnelles et d'hygiène améliorées au niveau des ménages.
