The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname. Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition. Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives to increase their skills; (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies; and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM). Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country. / Le projet vise à améliorer les services reproductive et de la santé maternelle, néonatale et infantile dispensés par les sages-femmes dans les quatre pays cibles du Bénin, la République démocratique du Congo (RDC), en Ethiopie et en Tanzanie. Les activités du projet comprennent: (1) la formation des sages-femmes pour améliorer leurs compétences; (2) l'éducation des communautés sur les dangers de la médiocrité des soins de santé pour les mères et les bébés; et (3) éliminer les obstacles entre les sexes qui empêchent les femmes enceintes d'accéder à des soins de santé appropriés et en temps opportun. Le projet se fonde sur le modèle canadien unique de sage-femme qui soutient les sages-femmes à travailler de façon autonome et dans les régions éloignées; et est mis en oeuvre par un consortium dirigé par CUSO international avec l'Association canadienne des sages-femmes (CAM). Les partenaires locaux du projet sont les associations de sages-femmes de chaque pays.

The project aims to reduce chi...ld mortality in targeted regions benefitting an estimated 452,345 women and 3,740,379 children. Substantial progress has been made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health. However, this progress often conceals widening disparities in given countries or regions. This project aims to address health disparities and gaps in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH), by prioritizing interventions identified as critical to advancing progress in reducing child mortality.Project activities include: (1) conduct and analyse research on health needs and solutions for mothers and children; (2) review and enhance existing policies and guidelines to improve MNCH; (3) develop and provide training on gender responsive MNCH interventions, on civil registration and vital statistics systems, and on health information management system; (4) test and implement models to address gaps in MNCH; (5) develop and deliver community awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on MNCH interventions; and (6) procure and distribute critical health supplies.This project is part of Canada's commitment for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health./ Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité infantile dans les régions ciblées et à venir en aide à quelque 452 345 femmes et 3 740 379 enfants. Des progrès importants ont été accomplis en vue d'atteindre l'Objectif du Millénaire pour le développement relatif à la réduction de la mortalité chez les enfants et à l'amélioration de la santé maternelle. Toutefois, ces progrès dissimulent souvent le fait qu'il existe des inégalités grandissantes dans certains pays ou certaines régions. Ce projet a pour objectif de corriger les inégalités et les écarts en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants (SMNE) en donnant la priorité aux interventions considérées comme essentielles pour accélérer les progrès en vue de réduire la mortalité infantile.Parmi les activités du projet : 1) effectuer des recherches afin d'étudier les besoins des mères et des enfants en matière de santé et de trouver des solutions pour y répondre; 2) examiner et parfaire les politiques et les lignes directrices existantes pour améliorer la SMNE; 3) élaborer et offrir de la formation sur les interventions axées sur l'égalité entre les sexes en matière de SMNE, sur les systèmes d'établissement des statistiques de l'état civil et d'enregistrement des faits d'état civil et sur les systèmes de gestion de l'information sur la santé; 4) mettre à l'essai et mettre en place des modèles visant à combler les écarts en SMNE; 5) élaborer et réaliser des campagnes de sensibilisation communautaire afin de mieux faire connaître les interventions en SMNE; 6) obtenir et distribuer des fournitures de santé essentielles.Ce projet s'inscrit dans l'engagement pris par le Canada à l'égard de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation offers 40 Canadian interns internships in nine countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda. The internships focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and capacity-building. Interns assist in preparing educational and communications materials, facilitating and designing workshops, organizing events and managing projects./ Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie.Le Conseil atlantique pour la coopération internationale permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans neuf pays, soit au Bhutan, en Bolivie, en Gambie, au Ghana, en Haïti, en Jamaïque, en Afrique du Sud, au Kenya et en Ouganda. Les stages visent à augmenter la sécurité alimentaire, à stimuler la croissance économique de manière durable et à renforcer les capacités. Les stagiaires appuient la préparation de matériel éducatif et de communication, conçoivent et animent des ateliers, organisent des événements et gèrent des projets.

The project contributes to imp...roving the health and well-being of children, women, and men in the five most deprived regions of Ghana. The project's beneficiaries are children and youth in 200 basic schools (primary and junior high) and women and men in the surrounding communities in ten districts. By providing water, basic sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, the project aims to increase the use of WASH services and improve sanitation practices among beneficiaries. The project also aims to strengthen relevant national institutions and monitoring and evaluation systems to enable better planning, delivery, and sustainability of decentralised water, sanitation and hygiene services in Ghana./ Le projet contribue à améliorer la santé et le bien-être des enfants, des femmes et des hommes dans les cinq régions les plus démunies du Ghana. Les bénéficiaires du projet sont : les enfants et les jeunes dans 200 écoles qui offrent de l'instruction élémentaire (écoles primaires et écoles secondaires de premier cycle) et les femmes et les hommes habitant les collectivités environnantes dans dix districts. Dans le cadre de ce projet, des services d'eau, d'assainissement et d'hygiène sont offerts afin d'accroître l'utilisation de ces services et d'améliorer les pratiques sanitaires au sein de la population bénéficiaire. Le projet vise également à renforcer les institutions nationales concernées et les systèmes de suivi et d'évaluation, pour permettre une amélioration de la planification, de la prestation et de la viabilité des services décentralisés d'eau, d'assainissement et d'hygiène au Ghana.

The project provides environmentally-friendly sanitation facilities and access to potable water to schools and health facilities, raises awareness among birth attendants, health service staff and community members, and develops a new approach to public health planning.Project activities include:(1) designing and constructing safe and gender-appropriate water and sanitation facilities (including biofill and biogas latrines, solar-powered pumps and mechanized boreholes) in 15 schools and 8 health facilities;(2) raising awareness about WASH and preventative health practices in 15 schools and 8 health facilities;(3) training authorities in two districts, five small towns and three rural communities to deliver, implement and monitor integrated WASH and health planning; and(4) holding WASH and health workshops for district, regional and national-level stakeholders, including for private sector where appropriate, to facilitate linkages and allow sharing of best practices./ Ce projet vise à améliorer la santé d'au plus 47 000 Ghanéens, y compris des mères, leurs nouveau-nés et 4 500 élèves dans les districts de Bongo et de Bawku Ouest. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation offers 40 Canadian interns internships in nine countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda. The internships focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and capacity-building. Interns assist in preparing educational and communications materials, facilitating and designing workshops, organizing events and managing projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le Conseil atlantique pour la coopération internationale permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans neuf pays, soit au Bhutan, en Bolivie, en Gambie, au Ghana, en Haiti, en Jamaique, en Afrique du Sud, au Kenya et en Ouganda. This project aims to reduce ne...onatal mortality in rural northern Ghana by building on a previous initiative on maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) called Leyaata. Leyaata Ane seeks to double the geographic scope of the previous Leyaata project by adding an additional 80 communities to the original 82. It aims to improve the delivery of health care, specifically healthcare around birth, by training 50 health workers, encouraging the adoption of codes of conduct, and ensuring facilities meet basic requirements for safe care around birth. A proven home visit program conducted by community-based health volunteers is used to increase access to this improved care.Project activities include: (1) providing health workers with training in essential interventions at birth and for newborns; (2) rehabilitating and equipping local facilities with essential technologies; (3) training and equipping community based volunteers to provide home visits for antenatal counselling and neonate monitoring; (4) distributing long-lasting insecticidal nets to all pregnant women and new mothers; and (5) facilitating support groups to promote women's care around birth and shared decision-making.The project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 39,000 people including approximately 20,000 children. In addition, more than 139,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results.Ghana Rural Integrated Development is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partner: Northern Empowerment Association./Ce projet vise à réduire la mortalité des nouveau-nés dans les régions rurales du Nord du Ghana en s'appuyant sur une initiative précédente en matière de santé des mères, des nouveau nés et des enfants (SMNE), appelée Leyaata. Leyaata Ane cherche à doubler la portée géographique du projet précédent en ajoutant 80 collectivités bénéficiaires aux 82 collectivités initiales. Le projet vise à améliorer la prestation de soins de santé, plus précisément les soins liés à la naissance, grâce à la formation de 50 travailleurs de la santé, en encourageant l'adoption de codes de conduite et en s'assurant que les installations respectent les exigences de base pour offrir des soins sécuritaires liés à la naissance. The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives.In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services.In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda. Knowledge of rights, access to... reproductive health services and use of family planning methods remain extremely low among adolescents in Ghana. Teachers are not trained or provided with the material required to properly engage with adolescents on sexuality education. Furthermore, there is also limited access to gender-sensitive and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services.The project's main activities include: training teachers to deliver standardized, gender-sensitive and youth-friendly comprehensive sexuality education; creating new, and strengthen existing, adolescent health clubs; delivering comprehensive sexuality education to adolescent girls; training frontline health care workers in the provision of youth-friendly and gender-sensitive services; increasing the number of health facilities providing quality adolescent friendly health services; raising awareness of adolescent girls to increase the demand for family planning; and strengthening procurement, supply and logistics management system for last mile distribution of contraceptives to young people; and engaging in social and behaviour change communication to raise awareness on gender equality and create an enabling environment for adolescent girls to defend, promote and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights./TO BE TRANSLATED - Knowledge of rights, access to reproductive health services and use of family planning methods remain extremely low among adolescents in Ghana. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname. Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition. Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.

This project is expected to contribute to the improved health of 68,400 women and children, including 13,800 girls and 13, 300 boys. In addition, more than 160,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly. CAUSE Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with CAUSE Honduras, CAUSE Guatemala and Instituticion Mam de Desarrollo Integral (IMDI)./ Le projet vise à accroître l'utilisation des services de santé adaptés à la culture et à en améliorer la prestation aux femmes enceintes et qui allaitent et à leurs enfants dans 111 collectivités autochtones difficiles à atteindre du Guatemala et du Honduras. This project seeks to contribu...te to the reduction of maternal and child mortality by improving the delivery and utilization of essential and nutrition related health services. Many women and children are at high risk of malnutrition and mortality in Guatemala and Kenya where high rates for chronic malnutrition and infant mortality, as well as high numbers of deaths due to complications from child birth prevailed over the last years. The project focuses on: (1) increasing the effectiveness of community referral systems, (2) increasing awareness of existing health services, and (3) strengthening the organizational management skills of local level health service providers. It works towards improving maternal, adolescent, child and infant nutrition through the promotion of local feeding and care practices, nutritious foods and supplements as well as by looking into wider nutrition security issues related to access to food and income. Lastly, the project strengthens local nutrition related health information systems through improved management of data collection and dissemination, and utilization of data for local, national and global decision-making. It is estimated that more than 1.3 million people will benefit directly, and more than 880,000 people indirectly, from activities led in the Chiquimula Department of Guatemala and five counties in Kenya (West Pokot, Trans-Nzoia, Busia, Kakamega, and Bungoma). The project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya, Helen Keller International, and the Ministry of Health, and in Guatemala with Action Against Hunger Guatemala, Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala, Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales, and local government organizations. / Ce projet vise à contribuer à réduire la mortalité maternelle et infantile en améliorant la prestation et l'utilisation des services essentiels de santé et les services de nutrition connexes. Bon nombre de femmes et d'enfants du Guatemala et du Kenya courent un risque élevé de malnutrition et de mortalité. Des taux élevés de malnutrition chronique et de mortalité infantile ainsi qu'un grand nombre de décès dû aux complications liées à l'accouchement persistent dans ces pays depuis des années. The Scaling Up Maternal Health... in Guatemala Project aims to reduce maternal and child mortality by strengthening essential MNCH services in the Republic of Guatemala. Activities include: (1) providing training and technical assistance to the Ministry of Health to develop and deploy distance education programs for health professionals and community healthcare workers, (2) providing training and technical assistance to health professional to use a community eHealth system for improving MNCH service to rural communities, and (3) providing technical assistance to health authorities at the national, district and community level to use MNCH data from community eHealth system, and (4) proving technical assistance to increase the dissemination and use of vital events data. The Project is expected to contribute directly the improved health of approximately two million people in the departments of Alta Verapaz, Huehuetenango, El Quiche and Sololá in Guatemala. Tula Foundation is implementing the project in collaboration with TulaSalud, McMaster University, Tigo Foundation, Alliance for Nutrition Foundation, and the Guatemalan Ministry of Health./ Le projet Scaling up MNCH in Guatemala vise à réduire la mortalité maternelle et infantile en renforçant les services de SMNE essentiels dans la République du Guatemala. The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname. Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition. This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation offers 40 Canadian interns internships in nine countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda. The internships focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and capacity-building. Interns assist in preparing educational and communications materials, facilitating and designing workshops, organizing events and managing projects. / Ce projet fait partie du Programme de stages pour les jeunes (PSIJ) du Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Commerce et Développement (MAECD), financé par la Stratégie emploi jeunesse (SEJ) du gouvernement du Canada, sous le volet Objectif carrière. Le PSIJ vise à offrir aux jeunes Canadiens titulaires d'un diplôme postsecondaire la possibilité d'acquérir une expérience professionnelle en participant au développement international, nécessaire pour amorcer une carrière réussie. Le Conseil atlantique pour la coopération internationale permet à 40 stagiaires canadiens d'intervenir dans neuf pays, soit au Bhutan, en Bolivie, en Gambie, au Ghana, en Haiti, en Jamaique, en Afrique du Sud, au Kenya et en Ouganda. Les stages visent à augmenter la sécurité alimentaire, à stimuler la croissance économique de manière durable et à renforcer les capacités. Les stagiaires appuient la préparation de matériel éducatif et de communication, conçoivent et animent des ateliers, organisent des événements et gèrent des projets.

The initiative supports the im...plementation of maternal, newborn and child health programs, contributing to the reduction in the number of maternal, newborn and child deaths in the country's northern region by working with the Ministry of health and the local population. Activities include: 1) training health managers and health care providers to deliver high quality health services, including obstetric care; 2) rehabilitating health centers and providing essential medical equipment; 3) raising awareness of local populations on the benefits of public health services, including on the right to health; and, informing and engaging the Canadian public on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti through media campaigns and learning events.This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 400,000 beneficiaries, as well as to improved knowledge on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti for approximately 6,000 Canadians.This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Université de Montréal, and including the Centre d'étude et de coopération internationale./ Le projet appuie la mise en place de programmes de santé pour les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants, en collaboration avec le ministère de la Santé et la population locale, afin de contribuer à la réduction du nombre de décès chez les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants dans le nord du pays. The initiative supports the im...plementation of maternal, newborn and child health programs, contributing to the reduction in the number of maternal, newborn and child deaths in the country's northern region by working with the Ministry of health and the local population. Activities include: 1) training health managers and health care providers to deliver high quality health services, including obstetric care; 2) rehabilitating health centers and providing essential medical equipment; 3) raising awareness of local populations on the benefits of public health services, including on the right to health; and, informing and engaging the Canadian public on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti through media campaigns and learning events.This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 400,000 beneficiaries, as well as to improved knowledge on maternal, newborn and child health issues in Haiti for approximately 6,000 Canadians.This initiative is implemented through a consortium led by the Université de Montréal, and including the Centre d'étude et de coopération internationale./ Le projet appuie la mise en place de programmes de santé pour les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants, en collaboration avec le ministère de la Santé et la population locale, afin de contribuer à la réduction du nombre de décès chez les mères, les nouveau-nés et les enfants dans le nord du pays. Les activités du projet comprennent : 1) la formation des gestionnaires et des fournisseurs de soins de santé afin d'offrir des services de santé de haute qualité, notamment en obstétrique; 2) la remise en état des centres de santé et approvisionnement en équipement médical essentiel; 3) la sensibilisation accrue des populations locales aux avantages des soins de santé publics, notamment au droit à la santé; information et mobilisation du public canadien autour des enjeux de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants en Haïti grâce à des campagnes médiatiques et à des activités d'apprentissage.On s'attend à ce que le projet contribue directement à l'amélioration de la santé d'environ 400 000 bénéficiaires, ainsi qu'à l'amélioration des connaissances sur les enjeux de santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants en Haïti chez environ 6 000 Canadiens.Le projet est mis en œuvre par un consortium composé de l'Université de Montréal, qui en assure la direction et du Centre d'étude et de coopération internationale.

Ce projet vise à contribuer ... la réduction de la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile à travers une approche globale et intégrée favorisant un continuum des soins dans sept communes en Haïti. Le projet vise à renforcer le système sanitaire et à rendre plus accessibles des compléments essentiels en micronutriments pour les femmes enceintes, les femmes allaitantes et les enfants de moins de cinq ans. Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) le renforcement du dépistage de la malnutrition des femmes enceintes et des enfants de moins de cinq ans, 2) la formation et la supervision des prestataires des centres communautaires de santé en SMNE, 3) le renforcement des structures de coordination en santé dans leurs fonctions de supervision, de coordination et de concertation des services SMNE, 4) la promotion de l'allaitement maternel exclusif pendant les six premiers mois de vie des enfants et une bonne diversification de l'alimentation et 5) la réhabilitation de centres de santé, le réaménagement et l'équipement des institutions en assurant le respect des normes environnementales et des droits des femmes./ Ce projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile à travers une approche globale et intégrée favorisant un continuum des soins dans sept communes en Haïti. The project aims to strengthen the health system and to make essential micronutrient supplements more accessible for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and for children under five. Project activities include: (1) improving the screening of pregnant women and children under five for malnutrition, (2) training and supervising community health centres' workers in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), (3) strengthening health coordination structures in their supervision, coordination and consultation functions of MNCH services, (4) promoting exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months and a healthy diet, and (5) restoring and equipping heath centres while respecting women's rights and meeting environmental standards. / Ce projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle, néonatale et infantile à travers une approche globale et intégrée favorisant la continuité des soins dans sept communes en Haïti. Le projet vise à renforcer le système sanitaire et à rendre plus accessibles des compléments essentiels en micronutriments pour les femmes enceintes, les femmes allaitantes et les enfants de moins de cinq ans. Les activités du projet comprennent: 1) le renforcement du dépistage de la malnutrition des femmes enceintes et des enfants de moins de cinq ans, 2) la formation et la supervision du personnel des centres de santé communautaires sur les soins fournis aux mères, nouveau-nés et enfants (SMNE), 3) renforcer les structures de coordination en santé dans leurs fonctions de supervision, de coordination et de concertation des services en SMNE, 4) promouvoir l'allaitement maternel exclusif pendant les six premiers mois de vie des enfants et une alimentation saine, 5) effectuer la réhabilitation de centres de santé et leur fournir de l'équipement, tout en assurant le respect des droits des femmes et des normes environnementales.

This is achieved by strengthening the health governance of the department; strengthening institutional emergency obstetric and neonatal care and community building.Project activities include: (1) constructing or rehabilitating spaces to improve services in seven basic emergency obstetric and neonatal health care centers for pregnant women; (2) training and mentoring managers, nurses and health workers in family planning and maternal and neonatal health care; 3) carrying out micro-projects for the renovation or construction of drinking water supply, sanitation and hygiene infrastructures in the health facilities of the project; (4) training and accompanying 150 members of local voluntary women's organizations and doubling the number of community health workers (269) responsible for sensitizing and referring populations to available health services; and (5) strengthening the functioning of the supply centers responsible for the distribution of medicines and medical equipment throughout the department.Overall, health facilities supported by the project seek to provide such services to approximately 146 000 women, and 66 000 children under five./Le projet vise principalement à augmenter l'offre de services de qualité en santé sexuelle et reproductive, maternelle, néonatale et des enfants de première ligne dans 8 des 15 communes du département de l'Artibonite en Haïti. Ce but est atteint par le renforcement de la gouvernance de la santé du département; le renforcement institutionnel des soins obstétricaux et néonataux d'urgence et le renforcement communautaire.Parmi les activités du projet, notons entre autres : 1) construire ou réhabiliter des espaces pour améliorer les services dans sept centres de santé de soins obstétricaux et néonataux d'urgence de base pour les femmes enceintes; 2) former et encadrer des gestionnaires, infirmières et travailleurs de la santé en méthodes de planification familiale et en soins de santé maternelle et néonatale; 3) réaliser des microprojets de rénovation ou construction d'infrastructures d'approvisionnement en eau potable, en assainissement et en hygiène dans les établissements de santé du projet; 4) former et accompagner 150 membres d'organisations locales de femmes bénévoles et doubler le nombre d'agents de santé communautaire (269) responsables de sensibiliser et référer les populations aux services de santé disponibles; 5) renforcer le fonctionnement des centres d'approvisionnement responsables de la distribution des médicaments et du matériel médical sur l'ensemble du département.Les établissements de santé appuyés par le projet cherchent à fournir de tels services à environ 146 000 femmes et 66 000 enfants de moins de cinq ans.

The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations. / Le résultat ultime de ce projet est l'amélioration de la santé et des droits des femmes, des adolescentes, et des enfants en situation de vulnérabilité dans 11 pays de l'Amérique latine et des Antilles (ALA). Ces pays sont les suivants : Bolivie, Colombie, Équateur, Guatémala, Guyane, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Pérou et Suriname. Le projet s'attaque aux carences dans la prestance des services de santé aux populations vulnérables telles que les femmes, les groupes autochtones et des descendances afro-antillaise, ainsi que les personnes vivant en régions éloignés. Pour cela, le projet va travailler sur trois composantes : (1) renforcement des systèmes de santé; (2) réduction du fardeau des principales maladies, et ; (3) amélioration de la nutrition. Le projet va contribuer à (i) faciliter une meilleure utilisation des soins de santé de bases ; (ii) renforcer la gestion par les autorités locales des principales maladies ; (iii) améliorer les habitudes alimentaires chez les populations cibles.
