AQCESS will target communities... and populations in select regions in Mali, Mozambique, Kenya and Pakistan where MNCH indicators, such as maternal mortality, skilled birth attendance, stunting prevalence and under five mortality are particularly poor and where women and children still lack access to essential health services. The regions targeted by the project lack adequate numbers of appropriately skilled health workers, have weak health system management, offer care of generally poor quality, and include communities with limited knowledge on how to protect and promote the health of mothers and children, and high levels of gender inequality. This initiative aims to improve the health of mothers, newborns and children through the following activities: (1) equipping and upgrading health facilities for: safer deliveries and newborn care, treating infections and malnutrition, facilitating eHealth applications, and improved disposal of biomedical waste; (2) training facility-based health workers and health care managers on topics including human resource management, use of clinical guidelines, evidence-based decision-making, and gender equality; (3) mobilizing local communities to adopt healthy behaviours; (4) providing essential health services at the community level; (5) training health workers and communities to collect, analyze and use administrative health data and contribute to reporting data through government information systems; and (6) engaging key project stakeholders on the results of project impact assessments and their relevance to policy dialogue. This initiative also includes a public engagement component designed to increase understanding of global MNCH issues among the Canadian public. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 1.3 million people, including over 330,000 children, and 1.5 million people indirectly.Aga Khan Foundation Canada is implementing this project in collaboration with the following local partners: Aga Khan Foundation Mozambique; Aga Khan Health Service, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme and Aga Khan Foundation, in Pakistan; Aga Khan University of East Africa and Aga Khan Health Service (AKHS) East Africa, in Kenya./ Le projet vise l'amélioration de la santé des mères, des nouveau-nés et des enfants dans certaines régions.

This initiative aims to reduce... maternal and infant mortality in the typhoon-ravaged Eastern Samar and three urban slum communities in Metro Manila in the Philippines by addressing the lack of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services, such as family planning, skilled birth attendants, emergency obstetric care and newborn care, as well as the lack of community understanding of safe motherhood practices. To address these needs, this initiative will establish an integrated network of four, non-profit MNCH clinics delivering services and outreach. Furthermore, this initiative will provide online and print public engagement resources, as well as speaking tours in Canada, to foster increased Canadian involvement in MNCH development efforts.Project activities include: (1) conducting information and education campaigns on safer MNCH issues; (2) training clinic medical staff on quality care standards, and up-to-date MNCH issues, knowledge, and practices; (3) setting-up and opening four MNCH clinics; (4) training women, youth and other marginalized groups in human rights and gender equality to enable behavioural changes that promote safe practices; and (5) produce and distribute public engagement resources on MNCH (print, online, video, toolkit) for use in Canada. This initiative is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 16,000 people, including approximately 6,400 children. In addition, more than 171,000 are expected to benefit indirectly from this initiative's results.

The project, also known as the... Enhance Mother, Newborn, and Child Health in Remote Areas through Health Care and Community Engagement (EMBRACE) project, aims to reduce preventable stunting and maternal-child mortality in hard-to-reach and peripheral regions in Cambodia, Burma, Philippines and Rwanda. Project activities include: (1) delivering awareness-raising sessions on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition issues for women of reproductive age, as well as male and female community members; (2) training midwives, nurses, traditional birth attendants and community health volunteers on safe birthing practices; (3) building and equipping clinics and/or delivery rooms for expectant mothers; and (4) providing supplies and training on how to gro healthy and diverse foods in household gardens. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 100,000 people, including approximately 33,000 children of vulnerable groups including ethnic minority groups and displaced persons returning to their homes. In addition, more than 360,000 people are expected to benefit indirectly from this project's results.

The project's objective is to ...establish a sustainable and cost-effective model of delivering training, providing continuing mentoring, coaching and outreach for continuing professional development in emergency care and access in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). It builds on the model initiated by the University of Western Ontario under the Muskoka Initiative, directly addressing the ability of health care providers in district hospitals and the health centers to care for women, infants, and children presenting with complications before, during, and after birth. This includes ensuring sustainability through the development of a cadre of well-trained professionals to continue the training and mentoring of other MNCH providers in the future. Activities include: (1) delivering workshops and short-term training sessions with MNCH mentors and coaches, (2) delivering workshops with nursing and midwifery faculty to integrate enhanced MNCH, gender and health concepts in the pediatric nursing and midwifery curriculum, and (3) providing support to strengthen programs in pediatric nursing and midwifery. It is expected that by the end of the project (or soon thereafter), the majority of health care providers in the targeted areas of each country are able to provide improved emergency care to pregnant women as well as mothers of babies and newborns, and have a network of ongoing support. This project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of 3,300 women, 1,800 men, 670 boys and 630 girls in targeted areas of Rwanda and Burundi needing emergency obstetrical and pediatric care, as well as the health care providers that are receiving the training. Because of the security situation in Burundi, activities there are currently on hold.

The project aims to contribute... to the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Ghana, Malawi and Rwanda. Target areas in each country experience a low level of knowledge on prevention, delays in seeking early treatment, poor hygiene and sanitation practices, traditional cultural practices, and gender inequities. Overall, key impediments in health delivery include low capacity of skilled workers, poor infrastructure, weak referral systems and lack of transport.Activities include: (1) training health workers in areas such as basic emergency obstetric and newborn care; (2) improving utilization and promotion of health services; emphasize household and community level engagement; (3) preventing illnesses and create demand for health services. These activities involve the setting up of Model Mothers, Care Groups, Community Conversations and mobilisations and sensitization activities, improving nutrition through increased community knowledge and skills on optimal feeding, improving access to nutritious foods and preventing malnutrition through community based initiatives. In Ghana, the project works with the Ghana Community Ambulance project to ensure increase access of adequate medical supplies and care. It also supports development and transmission of SMS and voice messages to pregnant women and mothers. In Malawi, the project strengthens early identification and integrated support for growth faltering children, and community management of acute malnutrition services. In Rwanda, activities include permaculture approaches to kitchen gardens, water harvesting and water-saving techniques. Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in consortium with ADRA Canada and Emmanuel International Canada. In Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada works in collaboration with local partners of Christian Children's Fund, Tuma Kavi Development Association and Assemblies of God Relief and Development Services; in Malawi, Emmanuel International Canada with Emmanuel International; and in Rwanda, ADRA Canada with ADRA Rwanda./Le projet vise à contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Ghana, au Malawi et au Rwanda.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers. The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation offers 40 Canadian interns internships in nine countries: Bhutan, Bolivia, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda. The internships focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and capacity-building. Interns assist in preparing educational and communications materials, facilitating and designing workshops, organizing events and managing projects.

The project aims to reduce the... incidence of child and maternal mortality in targeted countries through maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE). Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a deadly disease that affects women and children in developing countries. When women give birth in unhygienic circumstances, both mother and baby are at risk of contracting tetanus if they are not protected by vaccination. With Canada's support, UNICEF Canada is providing tetanus vaccine to at least 3,401,448 women of reproductive age and their future newborns in Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, Kenya and South Sudan. Project activities include: (1) distributing vaccines and supplies for supplemental immunization activities; (2) strengthening of the cold chain to transport vaccines and supplies; (3) promoting clean delivery practices, routine immunization and antenatal care; (4) developing and implementing national plans of action, training and support for health workers; and (5) strengthening surveillance of MNTE to monitor and evaluate progress./ Le projet vise à réduire le nombre de cas de mortalité d'enfants et de mères dans les pays ciblés grâce à l'élimination du tétanos chez les mères et les nouveau-nés.

Supported by Canada, the Unite...d Kingdom, the European Union, Sweden, and the United States, the Health Pooled Fund aims to deliver basic health services to those most vulnerable (particularly women and children) in eight of South Sudan's former ten States. The project aims to strengthen government systems, principally at the national and county levels, and to improve the health of women, newborns, adolescents, and children in this fragile state setting. This project builds on previous support to the Health Pooled Fund by extending coverage to new geographic areas, as well as by increasing the focus on nutrition and community-level service delivery. The needs of women and children are prioritized through a focus on safe motherhood, reproductive health, treatment of childhood diseases, and an increased emphasis on gender equality and social inclusion.

The project aims to increase t...he availability of skilled health care providers, especially midwives, in order to reduce maternal and infant mortality in South Sudan. The project builds on results from two previous projects: Training Midwives and Deploying Midwives in South Sudan. It supports six national training institutes delivering midwifery and nursing education in South Sudan, where a total of 850 health workers, including 650 midwives, are expected to complete training under the project. Project activities include: (1) developing a new curriculum for nurses and clinical officers; (2) obtaining the equipment required and improving the ability of the faculty members and administrative staff at the training institutes to teach and manage the midwifery and nursing programs; (3) mentoring of students and health care providers by international and national UN volunteer midwives during clinical practice to ensure the application of their skills; (3) training given by doctors working in health facilities to encourage a team approach in the provisions of midwifery and obstetric services; and (4) improving the ability of the Ministry of Health to manage and regulate the education of midwives and the ability of South Sudan's national and state-level Nursing and Midwifery Associations to advocate and promote their professions. The project is implemented in partnership with the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM). CAM will provide direct peer to peer mentoring support and technical expertise from practicing Canadian midwives and midwifery educators. In addition, the Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium will help to strengthen regulatory and licensing frameworks for the midwifery profession, and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada will provide technical expertise in the updating of the curriculum and training modules in obstetrics and gynecology for doctors and medical officers./ Le projet vise à accroître la disponibilité des fournisseurs de soins de santé qualifiés, particulièrement les sages-femmes, afin de réduire la mortalité maternelle et infantile au Soudan du Sud.

Project activities include: (1) distributing vaccines and supplies for supplemental immunization activities; (2) strengthening of the cold chain to transport vaccines and supplies; (3) promoting clean delivery practices, routine immunization and antenatal care; (4) developing and implementing national plans of action, training and support for health workers; and (5) strengthening surveillance of MNTE to monitor and evaluate progress./ Le projet vise à réduire le nombre de cas de mortalité d'enfants et de mères dans les pays ciblés grâce à l'élimination du tétanos chez les mères et les nouveau-nés.

The ultimate outcome of this p...roposal is to improve the health and rights of women, adolescent girls, and children in situations of vulnerability in 11 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The project addresses gaps in health services for vulnerable populations, such as women, indigenous and afro-descendant populations, and people living in remote areas. To that end, the project focuses on three components: (1) strengthening health systems; (2) reducing the burden of leading diseases, and; (3) improving nutrition. The project will (i) facilitate a better usage of essential health services; (ii) enhancing management by national health authorities of leading diseases; (iii) improve nutritional practices in targeted populations.

In Tanzania, a project popular...ly known as MamaToto (mother-baby) is building local capacity to improve maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH). It is testing a comprehensive MNCH package that builds on district-led implementation, evidence, and best practices from similar efforts in Uganda. It aims to reduce maternal and child mortality by increasing deliveries by skilled birth attendants, increasing antenatal and postnatal care attendance, developing an implementation model for MNCH districts, and establishing strategies for future scale-up in Tanzania, targeting the most vulnerable populations. However, as this project demonstrates, barriers to scaling up population-based MNCH life-saving interventions must be removed to reduce maternal and child deaths and morbidity — including engaging men and community stakeholders. In the Misungwi district of Tanzania, where the project is being implemented, only 13% of pregnant women attended antenatal care in the first trimester and only 47% had four or more of the minimum recommended visits. Contraceptive prevalence rate is 17% and unmet need for family planning is 27%. This project, a partnership between two Tanzanian institutions, the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, will enhance local capacity for qualitative research design, delivery, analysis, synthesis, and knowledge translation (moving from theory to practice). It aims to increase understanding of opportunities to foster male/adolescent/vulnerable population involvement, hence increasing access to antenatal care, delivery, and post-natal care. More generally, it will increase understanding of what factors encourage and discourage the scale-up beyond project-funded districts, based on similar experiences with MamaToto in Uganda. Finally, it provides opportunities for East African researchers working in a South-South partnership. Qualitative methodology using focus groups and key informant interviews will be used to gather information on potential barriers and enablers to address current implementation gaps. Stakeholders and end users will be engaged throughout the research cycle using an integrated approach to translating this knowledge into action. Early input of research priorities will be sought through meetings with district health teams and district and national policymakers in the Ministry of Health. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. It is a seven-year $36 million initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, IDRC, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Success in the implementation ...of maternal and newborn health interventions at the country level has been generally attributed to three main interlinked factors: leadership and management, resources, and end-user-related factors. Leadership and managerial capacities are critical for transformational change and sustainability, including gender-related dimensions of health systems leadership. These capacities also play a significant role in introducing and/or scaling up implementation of emergency obstetric and neonatal care in health facilities. This project, implemented by the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health, working in collaboration with Dalhousie University, complements current programming for accessing safe deliveries in Tanzania. It assesses the identified gaps in leadership and managerial capacities as well as the skills gaps in comprehensive emergency obstetrical and newborn care (CEmONC) in health facilities in Morogoro, Tanzania. This project employs a mixed-methods, participatory approach to research and capacity building that examines results over the longer term. It will be implemented in the same intervention health centres selected for the safe deliveries project, along with control health centres. Through enhancing leadership capacity of health centre managers and providers and CEmONC service provision, this project aims to produce research results that can contribute to improving maternal and child health service delivery. By sustaining and scaling up use of these services at the health centre level in Tanzania, it will also contribute to the optimum use of existing resources (non-human and human) for maternal, neonatal, and child health. This project is funded by the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa program. This project aims to improve t...he health of people living in 251 rural villages in Mozambique, Tanzania and Burundi by increasing their access to primary health care and clean water, promoting good health habits, and improving the agricultural yield of smallholder farmers. Most illnesses and deaths in the project villages are due to preventable diseases, lack of access to trained health workers and lack of access to clean water and adequate food. The project therefore seeks to increase the number of community health workers, provide bicycle ambulances to remote villages, build or expand basic health infrastructure where most needed, and enhance access to clean water by refurbishing old wells and building new ones. The project also educates women, men and children on sexual reproductive health, proper nutrition and sanitation, maternal and child health, HIV and AIDS, and gender issues, and trains both women and men farmers on best practices in sustainable agriculture.

This project, in partnership w...ith Tanzania's Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, and local government authorities, is supporting the achievement of results of the Government of Tanzania's National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania (2016 – 2020); a sub-strategy of Tanzania's Fourth Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSPIV).This initiative emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level, strengthening the health system referral pyramid, from community to national level; improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, essential medicines and commodities, and information communications technology); addressing human resources for health shortage and distribution; improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing; and promoting public private partnership. The implementation of the National Road Map Strategic Plan to Accelerate the Reduction of Preventable Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths in Tanzania is focused on improving the management and delivery of primary health care services to improve maternal, newborn and child health.Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania's pooled fund for the health sector to improve governance and to strengthen the health system performance. Since 2006, Canada has been working in close collaboration with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability.

The project aims to improve th...e reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services delivered through midwives in its four target countries of Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Tanzania. The project activities include: (1) training midwives to increase their skills; (2) educating communities on the dangers of poor health care for new mothers and babies; and (3) addressing the gender barriers that keep pregnant women from accessing appropriate and timely healthcare. The project draws upon the unique Canadian model of midwifery, which supports midwives to work independently and in remote areas, and is implemented through a consortium led by CUSO International with the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM). Local partners for the project are the national midwifery associations in each country.
