EAST AFRICAN GEOHEALTH HUB FOR... PREVENTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS
more
|
East African GEOHealth hub for... preventing environmental and occupational health risks
more
|
The burden of disease from env...ironmental and occupational health hazards and climate change is a growing concern in eastern Africa. A significant portion of this burden is preventable, but most countries in the region lack the research capacity to analyze environmental health risks and assess policy implications. In addition, government infrastructure for environmental health monitoring, regulation, and enforcement is limited. To tackle these multi-dimensional challenges, this project aims to establish a regional hub of training and research excellence in eastern Africa with Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The primary focus is to reduce the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which is responsible for high and rising rates of disease and death in the region. The project also addresses emerging occupational health and safety problems from climate change in agriculture. Pilot research aims to analyze and reduce occupational heat stress in key industries of the region (e.g., flower greenhouses), engaging industry to validate models for predicting current and future health risks to workers. The long-term objectives of the project are to build capacity and leadership in eastern Africa for conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary health research, extending a solution-oriented research portfolio to other countries, and addressing key priority problems in the region on environmental and occupational health. The project is being implemented under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The overall research component of the hub is led by Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Uganda's Makerere University, Maasai Mara University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya, and the University of Rwanda. The research component is closely integrated with a tailored training program for research leaders in the region headed by the universities of Southern California and Wisconsin-Madison.

IMPROVING HOUSEHOLD NUTRITION ...SECURITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE CARICOM
more
|
Improving household nutrition ...security and public health in the CARICOM
more
|
Non-communicable diseases and ...food insecurity are significant problems that threaten human and economic development in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Deaths from non-communicable diseases are the highest in the Americas, while the economic cost ranges from 1.4 to 8% of the region's gross domestic product. The health of CARICOM populations is intrinsically tied to diets, as seen by the region's startlingly high rates of obesity, overweight, and other nutrition-related risk factors. The healthiness of local diets is ultimately determined by the food system, characterized by the local production capacity, the availability of and access to healthy foods, and market characteristics that include the importation and proliferation of unhealthy processed foods. Since 2007, with the Jagdeo Initiative and the Port of Spain Declaration, there has been strong interest and commitment by CARICOM heads of government to improve the region's food system to address food security and to improve health through nutritious diets. Despite these efforts, implementation of national policies and action plans for enhanced food and nutrition security remains challenging and incomplete.Building on these political commitments, this project engages strong research institutions in the region to demonstrate how integrated agricultural and public health innovations, implemented through community initiatives and public policy interventions, can provide an effective approach to address the high burden of non-communicable diseases in the Caribbean. This project will focus on three countries (St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica) and will investigate the structural, policy, and behavioural conditions that drive food production and consumption. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, researchers will identify the best ways, including gender sensitive approaches, for aligning multi-sectoral policies to enhance food production, distribution, and accessibility. Finally, it will design and test scalable multi-sectoral interventions to address agriculture, food security, nutrition, and health priorities through different entry points, including school meal programs and school environments.

The Canadian International Foo...d Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research projects that address food security challenges in the developing world. It is jointly funded, coordinated, and implemented in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and uses the combined expertise of both organizations to maximize the impact of the projects funded. Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households. Women and girls are particularly targeted by this project since they face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. The objectives of the CIFSRF are: (1) to increase food security in developing countries by funding applied research in agricultural development and nutrition; (2) to apply Canadian science and technology expertise in collaboration with developing country partners to address food security; (3) to use research results to inform food security policies and programs; and (4) to identify innovations and scale up the most promising research from both Phase I and Phase II of the Fund to help meet future global food demand. Phase II focuses geographically on the 20 countries already targeted under Phase I as well as all other official development assistance-eligible countries in Africa. Project activities for phase II include: (1) developing farming methods that can better withstand the effects of climate change; (2) developing environmentally sustainable gender-sensitive, farmer-led research models for breeding and distribution of new crops or underutilized traditional crops and consumption of sufficient, safe and nutritious food; (3) improving family-based aquaculture; (4) decreasing domestic animal losses through development of vaccines; and (5) reducing post-harvest losses through adaptable and affordable technologies. Partnership is an important aspect of the CIFSRF and all the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. These partnerships harness Canada's expertise in agriculture and nutritional science and combine it with first-hand knowledge and expertise in developing countries, to maximize the benefit for development activities. West African Research and Trai...ning Hub on Environmental and Occupational Health in the Informal Economy
more
|
This project will help establi...sh a West African Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEO Health) Hub in environmental and occupational health. It will aim to enhance regional capacity and leadership for world-class research, training, and innovation to address national and regional health priorities. The hub will also inform policy development. Hazards in the informal economy Sub-Saharan Africa's informal economy contributes over half of the region's gross domestic product and supports 80% of the workforce. In West Africa, nine in 10 workers have informal jobs in economic activities related to agriculture, mining, transport, trade, and commerce. Many are regularly exposed to multiple environmental and occupational health hazards. There is little research or documentation related to the associated health risks and disease burdens, as well as a lack of scientific evidence to guide prevention and mitigation. To improve opportunities for better livelihoods in this vast economic sector, fast and sustained improvement in health and safety is critical. Research and training hub for West Africa This project will establish the hub under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The hub leverages existing strengths across Francophone and Anglophone countries. It is founded on a long-standing partnership between the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. It brings together a group of African and Canadian institutions, including: -Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -Ghana's Ministry of Health -McGill University -Ecohealth Community of Practice for West and Central Africa (spanning Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal) -University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Environmental and occupational health research The hub will enhance regional capacity for world-class research in environmental and occupational health in the informal sector. It will also build African leadership to guide national and regional policies for reducing environmental and occupational health hazards. The initial research focuses on documenting and reducing health threats associated with processing electronic waste (e-waste), small-scale gold mining, and air pollution impacts from the informal transport sector. All three economic activities produce significant levels of environmental contamination and pose elevated health risks to highly vulnerable workers in the informal sectors and their families.

|
|

IMPROVING DIETARY AND HEALTH D...ATA FOR DECISION-MAKING IN AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION ACTIONS IN AFRICA
more
|
Improving Dietary and Health D...ata for Decision-Making in Agriculture and Nutrition Actions in Africa
more
|
Sub-Saharan Africa has the hig...hest level of food and nutrition insecurity in the world. Despite many interventions, access to accurate and reliable information about the nutrition and health of individuals is severely lacking. This problem is intensified due to time-consuming and expensive primary data collection methods, which are especially challenging in remote locations. With strong national and international investments to reduce all forms of malnutrition, it is essential to find reliable field-friendly ways to collect information that can be readily available for making decisions on nutrition interventions. This project, implemented in collaboration with the South Africa-based Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network, will address the data gap by developing an information and communications technology-based platform for collecting real-time nutrition data. It builds on the growing recognition that digital platforms can support transformational advances in agriculture, nutrition, and other sustainable development objectives by combining the accuracy and frequency of recording events in near-real time at a low cost. Researchers will develop a front-end mobile application designed to be user-friendly and operable, even by largely illiterate individuals, along with a back-end web system that serves as a database and dashboard for data analysis. Innovative methods will be tested whereby households can provide their own data directly using icons, photos, interactive voice response, and games. Gender dynamics will be considered throughout the project, and the capacity of women to access and use the data collection tools will be enhanced. The mobile application will initially be tested in Kenyan communities and expanded to two other African countries. Results will be closely monitored and validated by comparing collected data with traditional methods and through engagement with other stakeholders in the nutrition sector. It will also be made accessible to interested stakeholders involved in national and international programming.

A comparative study of child m...arriage and parenthood in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Zambia
more
|
The aim of this project is to ...enhance the understanding of the complexities of child marriage and parenthood to inform policies and programming. The project will generate new evidence of international relevance, and by taking a comparative approach, it will contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycles of poverty and gender inequality. Studies to date have emphasized the drivers and immediate consequences for mothers and their infants. By taking an approach that emphasizes life course poverty and gender inequality, this project will help uncover how interventions in health, education, violence, and livelihoods need to be adapted to meet the needs of adolescent parents or children who are married, in order to have a positive effect on girls' and boys' trajectories. The overall research will be led by Young Lives (University of Oxford). The research will be undertaken in collaboration with Child Frontiers (Zambia) and Grupo de Analisis para el Desarollo – GRADE (Peru). A socio-ecological life course perspective will guide the research, which will use mixed methods, including quantitative as well as participatory approaches. It will also use a relational approach to gender and generation, examining the relationships, power structures, and norms and practices that influence adolescents' and young people's transitions, not only in terms of motherhood and marriage but also with respect to boys, marriage, fatherhood, and the formation of new households. To ensure uptake, an innovative engagement plan will be developed that involves key stakeholders from the outset, especially those drafting policies related to Sustainable Development Goal '5, Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The project aims to help susta...in the availability and affordability of nutritious and safe foods, and contribute to lowering the burden of ill health, particularly for the most vulnerable. The project also supports food market continuity and protects the sustainability of key workers and supply chains in food systems across 10 countries in Africa and Asia, which face potentially catastrophic supply and demand disruption due to the coronavirus (COVID-19). The 10 countries for this project include Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, and Tanzania. COVID-19 poses the risk of worsening existing gaps in livelihoods, incomes, and assets unless support for markets and food system workers is done in a gender-sensitive way. Project activities include: (1) supporting emergency business guidance and grants for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to provide safe and nutritious foods, (2) sustaining and reinforcing the gains of large-scale food fortification, (3) keeping food marketplace infrastructure open, but safer, (4) providing workplace nutrition protection for food system workers and their families, and (5) providing advisory and practical support to governments to help keep critical coordination mechanisms functioning, and help food systems keep working.

The Micronutrient Forum (Forum...) and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) convened food security, nutrition, health, and economic experts from global as well as local and regional institutes in Low- and Middle- Income (LMIC) countries to join the Standing Together for Nutrition consortium. With the long-lasting implications of the pandemic, there will remain a need for coordinated effort in nutrition and food systems. Specifically, this consortium shall promote the collection and dissemination of data, while modelling the impact of the pandemic on nutrition with a focus on how gender and other inequalities can be adequately addressed to inform investment and program design. The STfN consortium's work will result in more effective advocacy, and better-designed programs, thereby increasing the funding dedicated to addressing malnutrition and increasing the effectiveness of that funding, resulting in better nutrition outcomes for women, children, and vulnerable populations. To accomplish this, the consortium shall: 1. generate, update, monitor and fine-tune global analyses, ensure gender, income and other disaggregation and as the crisis evolves, 2. provide context-specific analyses and recommendations to countries or groups of countries (ideally in partnership with multilateral organizations such as SUN) for actions in health, nutrition, social protection and food systems, while addressing data gaps as necessary and possible. 3. work with an organization such as the Global Nutrition Report (GNR) to host data and analyses on COVID-19 and nutrition, ensuring gender, income and other relevant disaggregation of the data, and providing the opportunity to highlight specific vulnerabilities and opportunities, and 4. disseminate and translate findings into communication and advocacy strategies, which will inform and guide prioritization ahead of events such as the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit and Food Systems Summit in 2021. / The Micronutrient Forum (Forum) and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) convened food security, nutrition, health, and economic experts from global as well as local and regional institutes in Low- and Middle- Income (LMIC) countries to join the Standing Together for Nutrition consortium. MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES FOR CLIM...ATE CHANGE RESILIENCE (MS4CR): OPERATING COSTS FOR CAPACITY BUILDING

Mathematical sciences for clim...ate change resilience (MS4CR): Operating costs for capacity building
more
|
The World Bank has estimated t...hat climate change will have negative impacts for some 100 million people worldwide. As many as 43 million people in Africa alone face increased prospects of severe droughts, floods, and storms threatening their health and economic security and underlining the urgency of action. African scientists have an important contribution to make to understanding the scope and scale of these problems and to developing innovative solutions for presentation to policymakers and practitioners. Despite some progress, the number of African scientists remains relatively small. Further efforts are needed to develop Africa's scientific talent and to retain scientists in Africa. The proposed project will support the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) in building a critical mass of mathematical scientists to contribute to climate change solutions for Africa through training, internship placements in government, industry and intergovernmental organizations, and research grants, with a special emphasis on women mathematical scientists. There will also be support for the consolidation of the operations of AIMS and its expansion across the continent, including further expansion in Francophone Africa. AIMS alumni have gone on to apply their mathematical skills in many ways to address a number of Africa's development challenges and to contribute solutions to African industry. By building on such successes, the Government of Canada's investment will ensure greater impact of the AIMS model and advance its vision to transform Africa. The present project covers IDRC's operational costs for the new Mathematical Sciences for Climate Change Resilience (MS4CR) initiative, including salary, travel, and administrative costs. The IDRC staff person will be responsible for the delivery, monitoring, and communications of the initiative, supported by the AIMS Secretariat.

HARNESSING BIG DATA TO MEET TH...E SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS – BUILDING CAPACITY IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH

Harnessing big data to meet th...e Sustainable Development Goals – Building capacity in the Global South
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data, often called big data, promise to improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Furthermore, declining prices and improved functionality have democratized data usage, and open-source tools have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in capturing and analyzing these data sets for public purposes — big data for development (BD4D) — is still relatively new, but it accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, much of the BD4D research is coming from Northern institutions and private sector companies, resulting in a Northern-driven, male-oriented agenda, rather than one driven by Southern voices and Global South collaboration. To meet this challenge, this project will develop capacity among researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to measuring progress on the SDGs and to gender-related issues. It is being implemented by LIRNEasia, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional – CIPEI. Over a two-year period, a global network will work on applied big data for development innovations, including big data analyses and capacity building in close collaboration with private sector companies and policymakers. The network will also develop a critical perspective on issues related to big data and marginalization, privacy, security, rights, ethics and competition. Combining globally coordinated research efforts and regional hubs, the network will embed the findings of the project into Southern-led processes, and represent Southern voices in global policy discussions.

This project supports Developm...ent Initiatives in developing and publishing the 2020-2021 Global Nutrition Report (GNR). The GNR is the leading independent accountability mechanism for nutrition. Established in 2013 as an outcome of the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Global Compact, the Report seeks to increase accountability for greater action to end malnutrition with a focus on curating high quality, comprehensive and credible data on nutrition outcomes and its determinants, and accounting for stakeholder commitments, policies and interventions designed to improve nutrition and financing for nutrition. Data produced by the Report exposes barriers faced by nutrition stakeholders, and highlights potential for action and advocacy for improved nutrition. The Report also holds donors, governments and private sector stakeholders accountable to their policy and financial commitments pledged through Nutrition for Growth and tracks donor and country annual spending towards nutrition. The 2020 – 2021 Report aims to: (1) call for greater action to end malnutrition in all its forms, (2) increase commitments for more action by highlighting gaps in and opportunities for financing and policy, (3) drive accountability and transparency by showing who is delivering and where progress is too slow, (4) work with partners who use GNR information to enforce accountability, (5) remain the 'go-to' resource for data on nutrition that innovates by disaggregating and visualising data, and telling stories to make the case for action, (6) inspire action by highlighting how change happens, how barriers are overcome, and what enables action, (7) be inclusive, highlighting all forms of malnutrition in all locations – low-, middle- and high-income countries, and different sectors, and (8) go beyond the nutrition sector by building allies in other sectors.
