Poor quality diets are conside...red one of the leading contributors to the global burden of disease. Current global food systems are not fit for this purpose, as the increased demand for food, spurred by rising population growth and shifts in diets, are accompanied by environmental challenges and the triple burden of malnutrition: underconsumption, overconsumption, and poor nutrition. Further, increasing food production alone does not resolve malnutrition because malnutrition is affected more by consumption patterns of calories and nutrients than it is by lack of available food. Approximately 1 billion people consume too few calories, at least 3 billion have insufficient nutrients, and more than 2.5 billion consume too much. These three burdens, which often coexist in the same community and even in the same household, comprise the central challenge to achieving food security for all. This project will make strategic contributions to improving markets for nutrition and diet quality in developing countries. It will test approaches to understanding how local food commerce can successfully compete to market more nutritious foods and make them more available and affordable to consumers. The project offers a unique opportunity to learn about and support partnerships with private sector players, particularly small and medium enterprises, to increase the supply and consumption of healthy diets. The three-year project will be led by the Geneva-based Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and will engage IDRC in this multi-donor, CA$30 million initiative on Making Markets Work to Improve the Consumption of Nutritious Foods. Working at the national scale in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Kenya, scalable approaches and policies for strengthening food systems will be tested. Particular attention will be on supporting public-private partnerships to address both demand and supply structures so that the consumption of nutritious foods increases and food systems can sustain healthy dietary patterns.

The goal of this project is to... provide women livestock farmers with greater access to and control of economic resources. It aims to increase the productivity of the dairy sector in three districts of southern Punjab in a way that creates opportunities for women to contribute more equitably to the sector. The project supports activities in three main areas: i) The project aims to strengthen 100 existing dairy cooperatives (Farmers' Milk Cooperatives) and establish up to 250 new cooperatives. Activities in this area include: providing the cooperatives with modern milk processing equipment, training farmers in modern techniques for breeding and raising livestock, and establishing local support services such as veterinary workers, artificial insemination technicians, and milk marketing specialists. ii) The project aims to increase the contribution of women livestock farmers to the dairy sector. Activities in this area include: providing the poorest women with assets such as buffalos, barns, feed mixers, and water troughs, providing training on how to use and manage these new assets, and providing training for female executives of the cooperatives to help them become more widely involved across the dairy sector. iii) The project aims to facilitate the creation of connections between farmers, cooperatives, the private sector, and the government. Activities in this area include: poster campaigns to increase the visibility of the cooperatives, media and communications campaigns to engage potential private sector partners for farmers and the cooperatives, and expanding the ability of the cooperatives and the government to provide local educational and advisory services that meet the needs of the dairy sector. The project is expected to benefit up to 12,250 dairy farmers and their families.

Research quality assurance and... research ethics standards for think tanks
more
|
IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (...TTI) provides capacity development support to TTI-funded think tanks to strengthen their capacity in research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement and communications. By providing tailored support to address specific capacity gaps, TTI is seeking to add value to the long-term core funding provided to the think tanks. Drawing on assessments of grantee needs, TTI will implement regional capacity development plans that balance demand-led and supply-led opportunities. This project aims at enhancing research quality standards in participating institutions and stimulating their adoption of international research ethics guidelines as part of their standard research procedure. Using a participatory approach, the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (ASIES) (Association for Research and Social Studies) in coordination with the Latin American Initiative for Public Policy Research (ILAIPP) network, will deliver training activities open to grantee think tanks. The first activity will consist of a diagnostic exercise aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses in research-quality assurance systems of participating institutions. This diagnostic will reveal the dimensions and indicators of research quality as defined by institutions themselves. Subsequently, institutions will be guided, through webinars and a discussion forum, to identify parameters of research excellence that best match the kind of research they conduct. The second set of activities will support institutions in developing research peer-review systems. Participants will be provided with introductory material and accompaniment to develop formal peer-review procedures and to build researchers' capabilities to become effective reviewers. Another set of activities will support institutions to adopt research ethics guidelines as part of the formal research procedures. Finally, an after-action review will be conducted in which participants will evaluate their work during the project. This project is expected to raise participant institutions' research quality standards and strengthen researchers' capabilities. The results of the after-action reviews will be compiled in an open document to share lessons learned at the end of the project. The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.

TOWARDS ELIMINATING ANEMIA IN ...THE HIGH ANDES: LINKING SOCIAL PROTECTION WITH AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION INTERVENTIONS FOR SCALING

|
Towards eliminating anemia in ...the high Andes: linking social protection with agriculture and nutrition interventions for scaling
more
|
Despite notable progress to re...duce poverty and malnutrition in Peru through a series of government interventions over the past decade, anemia among women and children in rural areas of the Andes is still a major challenge for social protection and national development programs. Diverse efforts implemented independently by several agencies have not proven effective and the Ministry of Social Protection recognizes that a new approach is necessary in order to make significant progress. The Lima, Peru-based Centro International de la Papa, also known as the International Potato Center, developed improved potato varieties with high iron and zinc content that could help reduce the prevalence of anemia in rural populations (for whom the potato is the main staple food), particularly among children and women. However, potatoes alone will not be sufficient to provide a balanced nutritious diet, therefore this project will explore measures that could complement the bio-fortified food sources. Government and non-government agencies will work together in the municipality of Curgos, Peru's most vulnerable rural area and a priority region for the government, on a coordinated strategy that combines interventions in agriculture, health, education, and value chains. The strategy will be piloted in Curgos and policy recommendations and approaches for scaling up will be made directly to the ministries of social protection and agriculture, which have been engaged in the project since the project's formulation. The project team includes relevant experts in agronomy, economics, health, nutrition, and policy research. Lessons gained through this pilot study would inform the use of the approach worldwide by the extensive network of the Root, Tubers and Bananas program of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research.

This project aims to streamlin...e how the Peruvian Government handles environmental impact assessments for mining and energy projects while strengthening the rigour and analysis of these assessments. Specifically, the project intends to consolidate the leadership role of the Ministry of the Environment over environmental issues related to large mining and energy projects and strengthen the capacity of regional governments responsible for handling the environmental impact assessments of small and medium-scale mining projects. Key activities include: 1) participatory diagnostic of the current normative framework for the environmental assessment and management process, 2) provinding technical assistance to key stakeholders for the development of employees training program in environmental management, and 3) providing operational and technological support for environmental management and enforcement.

The project aims to support th...e World Food Programme (WFP) in the fight against hunger. WFP is partnering with the private sector, agriculture producers, African governments and other stakeholders to support the establishment of commercially sustainable factories in Ethiopia and Rwanda to produce Supercereal Plus, a fortified cereal that responds specifically to the nutritional needs of children aged 6-24 months. Project activities include: (1) purchasing Supercereal Plus from the three factories for five years to be used for WFP operations, and (2) using Supercereal Plus a locally-produced product in its nutrition programmes in 11 African countries.

IMPROVING HOUSEHOLD NUTRITION ...SECURITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE CARICOM
more
|
Improving household nutrition ...security and public health in the CARICOM
more
|
Non-communicable diseases and ...food insecurity are significant problems that threaten human and economic development in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Deaths from non-communicable diseases are the highest in the Americas, while the economic cost ranges from 1.4 to 8% of the region's gross domestic product. The health of CARICOM populations is intrinsically tied to diets, as seen by the region's startlingly high rates of obesity, overweight, and other nutrition-related risk factors. The healthiness of local diets is ultimately determined by the food system, characterized by the local production capacity, the availability of and access to healthy foods, and market characteristics that include the importation and proliferation of unhealthy processed foods. Since 2007, with the Jagdeo Initiative and the Port of Spain Declaration, there has been strong interest and commitment by CARICOM heads of government to improve the region's food system to address food security and to improve health through nutritious diets. Despite these efforts, implementation of national policies and action plans for enhanced food and nutrition security remains challenging and incomplete.Building on these political commitments, this project engages strong research institutions in the region to demonstrate how integrated agricultural and public health innovations, implemented through community initiatives and public policy interventions, can provide an effective approach to address the high burden of non-communicable diseases in the Caribbean. This project will focus on three countries (St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica) and will investigate the structural, policy, and behavioural conditions that drive food production and consumption. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, researchers will identify the best ways, including gender sensitive approaches, for aligning multi-sectoral policies to enhance food production, distribution, and accessibility. Finally, it will design and test scalable multi-sectoral interventions to address agriculture, food security, nutrition, and health priorities through different entry points, including school meal programs and school environments.

This project creates the autho...rization for capacity building support to develop and manage the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). The fund aims to support the development of quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale farmers. It will also help ensure their use at scale.About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation FundThe LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.More specifically, the LVIF will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability, and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective research and public-private partnerships to accelerate the registration, commercialization, and use of vaccines. The research will also lead to a better understanding of disease dynamics and their impact, as well as the issues that constrain poor farmers from using vaccines. By bringing together all stakeholders - from farmers to researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and regulators - the LVIF will foster a vibrant and sustainable livestock sector in the target regions.Separate Project Approval Documents will authorize individual research projects and activities related to research uptake and scale up, program synthesis, and communication.

The Livestock Vaccine Innovati...on Fund is a partnership of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and Canada's IDRC. It supports the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, and South and South East Asia. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective partnerships between vaccine researchers, the public sector, and the private sector to accelerate the registration, commercialization and use of vaccines. The goal is to make quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale livestock farmers, and to facilitate their use at scale. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund governance structure consists of a Governance Steering Committee, comprised of one senior member from each donor partner - Global Affairs Canada, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (as an observer), and IDRC, and two external members with vaccine research and private sector-related expertise at the international level. This committee will be responsible for guiding the Fund's overall strategic direction and main priorities. An Expert Review Panel (ERP) will have a technical advisory function and will review, rank, and recommend proposals for funding. It will consist of six regular members plus one chairperson. One representative from each donor partner may also attend the ERP meetings as observers. The chairperson of the Expert Review Panel will be one of the external members of the Governance Steering Committee. This project will contribute to the implementation of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund and the development of its portfolio of projects. The funds from this project will support expenses associated with the activities of the Governance Steering Committee and the Expert Review Panel, including honoraria, and expenses related to travel and participation in project selection and the Fund's governance meetings, as well as any participation by the committee members in project events.

DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL VACCINE... FOR CONTAGIOUS CAPRINE PLEUROPNEUMONIA BASED ON A FAST-GROWING MYCOPLASMA FERIRUMINATORIS CHASSIS
more
|
Development of a novel vaccine... for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia based on a fast-growing Mycoplasma feriruminatoris chassis
more
|
Contagious caprine pleuropneum...onia (CCPP) is a severe respiratory disease of goats and sheep caused by the bacterium mycoplasma capricolum subsp capripneumoniae (Mccp). Clinical CCPP occurrence has been reported in 40 countries in Africa and Asia and mortality and morbidity can reach 70% and 100% respectively within 7-10 days. Goats and sheep are an important source of income for women and CCPP severely affects their ability to provide for their families. The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines estimates that every year, CCPP causes economic losses of up to USD$507 million (approximately CA$484 million) in endemic areas. Vaccination remains the most effective and affordable method to control CCPP, because antibiotic treatment does not eliminate the bacterium and sanitary measures are not feasible in smallholder settings. The current CCPP vaccine is safe but its protection is short-lived (less than one year). It is also expensive to produce because the bacterium grows slowly and results in low yields. The objective of this project is to develop a novel CCPP vaccine based on the fastest-growing mycoplasma species to date, mycoplasma feriruminatoris (M.feri). M. feri was isolated from wild goats and has a generation time of less than 30 minutes. M. feri genes encoding virulent factors will be deleted, creating space for insertion of Mccp genes that encode known and predicted vaccine candidate antigens. Goats will be vaccinated with the inactivated or live new recombinant vaccine, then experimentally infected with Mccp to determine whether the vaccine is protective. This project will use cutting-edge synthetic biology tools to construct a vaccine for CCPP that will grow efficiently, express protective Mccp antigens, and be used either as a live or inactivated vaccine. This 24-month project is a collaboration between the University of Bern in Switzerland, the Institut national de la recherche agronomique at the University of Bordeaux, France, and the J. Craig Venter Institute in the USA.

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE WORKSHOP ON... FOOD SYSTEMS RESEARCH FOR OBESITY PREVENTION IN AFRICA
more
|
Knowledge exchange workshop on... food systems research for obesity prevention in Africa
more
|
Food systems in many developin...g countries in Africa are becoming unhealthier. This is largely a result of rapid urbanization and the associated increase in the availability, affordability, and consumption of unhealthy, ultra-processed food. This in turn is spurring the rising prevalence of obese individuals, especially among the urban poor. IDRC's Food, Environment, and Health program intends to develop a significant portfolio of research projects that aim to prevent the rising burden of obesity and other food-related non-communicable diseases in low and middle-income countries through food systems research. Projects across nine African countries are being funded in an effort to deepen and expand this field of work in the region. However, research capacity and collaboration in the field remain low. Therefore, there is a pressing need to enhance capacity and networking among African researchers, practitioners, and young scientists to improve their understanding of and to promote healthy and sustainable food systems. This project will provide funding for a three-day workshop called Partners for a better food system in Africa that brings experienced and new food system researchers together from across Africa to share knowledge and build networks. The workshop will be hosted by Priority Cost Effective Lessons for System Strengthening South Africa (PRICELESS SA).

MAKING GROWTH WORK FOR WOMEN I...N LOW-INCOME COUNTRIES (GROW)

|
Making Growth Work for Women i...n Low-income Countries (GrOW)
more
|
Women's economic empowerment c...an improve if globalization and urbanization lead to greater opportunities for employment. In addition, better living conditions for women, such as access to health care or child care services, can expand women's choices in the labour market. However, depending on laws and social norms, these employment opportunities may be confined to low-wage sectors, thus increasing women's vulnerability. This project aims to support economic policy that can enhance women's empowerment. It will analyze the positive and negative effects of economic growth on women's lives and economic opportunities in nine developing countries. The evidence generated will help decision-makers in low-income countries to amplify the positive effects and mitigate the negative effects of globalization and urbanization. The project will also strengthen the capacity of southern researchers to lead future efforts to improve economic policies. This project is part of the Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) program. GrOW is a five-year, multi-funder partnership with the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and IDRC. Launched in 2013 with a focus on low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, the program aims to support policies and interventions that improve women's livelihoods and contribute to social well-being. In addition to 10 projects addressing the barriers to women's economic empowerment, GrOW will support a cluster of four projects looking at the intersection of economic growth and women's economic empowerment. This project is among them, selected through a global competitive call.

This project will support the ...dissemination of results and lessons from several nutrition focused projects under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF). Of the 18 active projects currently testing scale-up of innovations, seven have strong potential for improving diet quality and nutrition. Results from these projects will be highlighted in October 2017 at a special symposium during the International Congress of Nutrition held by the International Union of Nutritional Sciences in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the title Research and Scaling Up Nutritionally Sensitive Agricultural Innovations .The symposium will lead to the production of a special supplement in a peer-reviewed nutrition journal. Presentations at the symposium will showcase the relevance of nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions and discuss how interventions such as food fortification can complement agriculture interventions when the latter alone cannot meet the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations. Approximately 14 researchers from Asia, Africa, and Latin America will attend the symposium. Funding will support the preparation and coordination of the symposium and cover the costs of technical and editorial support to the preparation of manuscripts for publication. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

EVALUATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS A...ND KEY LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CIFSRF PROGRAM
more
|
Evaluating the contributions a...nd key lessons learned from the CIFSRF program
more
|
Food and nutritional insecurit...y present a significant problem for most developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, where almost 90% of the undernourished people in the world live. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimated that as of 2015, close to 800 million people are undernourished. In all developing regions, especially the varied and risky rain-fed systems of sub-Saharan Africa, there is a need for sustainable agriculture technologies to increase the productivity, stability, and resilience of production systems, to provide dietary needs for active and healthy lives, and to confront the growing challenges of climate change. The Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) is a 9-year, $124.5 million initiative implemented in 2009 by IDRC and Global Affairs Canada to support research that addresses food security in the developing world. The goal of CIFSRF is to foster the development of more equitable, productive, and sustainable agricultural systems that increase food security and enhance nutrition by investing in applied research and promoting the scaling up of innovations and research results. This project will synthesize key lessons and document the influence and contributions of the CIFSRF research-for-development program. The analysis will use a case study method to characterize the early food security results and impacts, the nature and extent of the contribution claimed, and how scaling happened or did not happen. It will build a performance story that illustrates the links between the actions of the program and its results. More broadly, the analysis will contribute to understanding how a research for development program such as CIFRSF can lead to broader development outcomes of food and nutrition security, and income security for poor households. This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), a program of IDRC undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.

HARNESSING BIG DATA TO MEET TH...E SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS – BUILDING CAPACITY IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH
more
|
Harnessing big data to meet th...e Sustainable Development Goals – Building capacity in the Global South
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data, often called big data, promise to improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Furthermore, declining prices and improved functionality have democratized data usage, and open-source tools have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in capturing and analyzing these data sets for public purposes — big data for development (BD4D) — is still relatively new, but it accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, much of the BD4D research is coming from Northern institutions and private sector companies, resulting in a Northern-driven, male-oriented agenda, rather than one driven by Southern voices and Global South collaboration. To meet this challenge, this project will develop capacity among researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to measuring progress on the SDGs and to gender-related issues. It is being implemented by LIRNEasia, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional – CIPEI. Over a two-year period, a global network will work on applied big data for development innovations, including big data analyses and capacity building in close collaboration with private sector companies and policymakers. The network will also develop a critical perspective on issues related to big data and marginalization, privacy, security, rights, ethics and competition. Combining globally coordinated research efforts and regional hubs, the network will embed the findings of the project into Southern-led processes, and represent Southern voices in global policy discussions.

Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Ar...id Regions
more
|
People living in Africa and So...uth Asia's semi-arid regions face challenges that hinder their economic growth and development. This project seeks to find proactive, longer-term approaches to climate change adaptation in these vulnerable regions, while helping locals manage existing risks.Short-term focus must shiftSo far, responses to climate threats in these regions have focused mainly on short-term solutions, such as early warning systems, famine relief, and soil and water conservation. However, long-term climate projections suggest that a more profound response will be needed by mid-century. The research team will respond to this knowledge and development gap through a program involving regional diagnostic studies, research, knowledge synthesis, and information sharing in semi-arid regions. Long-term, sustainable adaptationThe project, which falls under IDRC's Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia program, draws on a number of disciplines found in the five consortium partners. It will address the complex interactions between climate, biophysical, social, political, and economic dynamics. The project team will integrate research on each of these aspects through transformative scenario planning, which is an effective methodology for bringing sometimes disparate stakeholders together to address complex problems. Results to support adaptation to climate changeThe project will generate credible information that decision-makers and others can use to develop robust adaptation strategies. Research teams will conduct their work in several countries across Africa and South Asia. The results are expected to help these regions shift from their current adaptation practices and policies into a mode that achieves proactive, widespread adaptation. With that, vulnerable groups will gain the skills and adaptive strategies they need to enhance their livelihoods over the long-term.

Governance Steering Committee ...and Expert Review Panel of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund
more
|

Development of a novel vaccine... for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia based on a fast-growing Mycoplasma feriruminatoris chassis

|

West African Research and Trai...ning Hub on Environmental and Occupational Health in the Informal Economy
more
|
This project will help establi...sh a West African Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEO Health) Hub in environmental and occupational health. It will aim to enhance regional capacity and leadership for world-class research, training, and innovation to address national and regional health priorities. The hub will also inform policy development. Hazards in the informal economy Sub-Saharan Africa's informal economy contributes over half of the region's gross domestic product and supports 80% of the workforce. In West Africa, nine in 10 workers have informal jobs in economic activities related to agriculture, mining, transport, trade, and commerce. Many are regularly exposed to multiple environmental and occupational health hazards. There is little research or documentation related to the associated health risks and disease burdens, as well as a lack of scientific evidence to guide prevention and mitigation. To improve opportunities for better livelihoods in this vast economic sector, fast and sustained improvement in health and safety is critical. Research and training hub for West Africa This project will establish the hub under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The hub leverages existing strengths across Francophone and Anglophone countries. It is founded on a long-standing partnership between the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. It brings together a group of African and Canadian institutions, including: -Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -Ghana's Ministry of Health -McGill University -Ecohealth Community of Practice for West and Central Africa (spanning Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal) -University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Environmental and occupational health research The hub will enhance regional capacity for world-class research in environmental and occupational health in the informal sector. It will also build African leadership to guide national and regional policies for reducing environmental and occupational health hazards. The initial research focuses on documenting and reducing health threats associated with processing electronic waste (e-waste), small-scale gold mining, and air pollution impacts from the informal transport sector. All three economic activities produce significant levels of environmental contamination and pose elevated health risks to highly vulnerable workers in the informal sectors and their families.

Livestock Vaccine Innovation F...und: Strengthening of Research Capacity

This project creates the autho...rization for capacity building support to develop and manage the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). The fund aims to support the development of quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale farmers. It will also help ensure their use at scale. About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund The LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. More specifically, the LVIF will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability, and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective research and public-private partnerships to accelerate the registration, commercialization, and use of vaccines. The research will also lead to a better understanding of disease dynamics and their impact, as well as the issues that constrain poor farmers from using vaccines. By bringing together all stakeholders - from farmers to researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and regulators - the LVIF will foster a vibrant and sustainable livestock sector in the target regions. Separate Project Approval Documents will authorize individual research projects and activities related to research uptake and scale up, program synthesis, and communication.
