GOVERNANCE STEERING COMMITTEE ...AND EXPERT REVIEW PANEL OF THE LIVESTOCK VACCINE INNOVATION FUND
more
|
Governance Steering Committee ...and Expert Review Panel of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund
more
|
The Livestock Vaccine Innovati...on Fund is a partnership of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and Canada's IDRC. It supports the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, and South and South East Asia. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective partnerships between vaccine researchers, the public sector, and the private sector to accelerate the registration, commercialization and use of vaccines. The goal is to make quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale livestock farmers, and to facilitate their use at scale. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund governance structure consists of a Governance Steering Committee, comprised of one senior member from each donor partner - Global Affairs Canada, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (as an observer), and IDRC, and two external members with vaccine research and private sector-related expertise at the international level. This committee will be responsible for guiding the Fund's overall strategic direction and main priorities. An Expert Review Panel (ERP) will have a technical advisory function and will review, rank, and recommend proposals for funding. It will consist of six regular members plus one chairperson. One representative from each donor partner may also attend the ERP meetings as observers. The chairperson of the Expert Review Panel will be one of the external members of the Governance Steering Committee. This project will contribute to the implementation of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund and the development of its portfolio of projects. The funds from this project will support expenses associated with the activities of the Governance Steering Committee and the Expert Review Panel, including honoraria, and expenses related to travel and participation in project selection and the Fund's governance meetings, as well as any participation by the committee members in project events.

Contagious caprine pleuropneum...onia (CCPP) is a severe respiratory disease of goats and sheep caused by the bacterium mycoplasma capricolum subsp capripneumoniae (Mccp). Clinical CCPP occurrence has been reported in 40 countries in Africa and Asia and mortality and morbidity can reach 70% and 100% respectively within 7-10 days. Goats and sheep are an important source of income for women and CCPP severely affects their ability to provide for their families. The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines estimates that every year, CCPP causes economic losses of up to USD$507 million (approximately CA$484 million) in endemic areas. Vaccination remains the most effective and affordable method to control CCPP, because antibiotic treatment does not eliminate the bacterium and sanitary measures are not feasible in smallholder settings. The current CCPP vaccine is safe but its protection is short-lived (less than one year). It is also expensive to produce because the bacterium grows slowly and results in low yields. The objective of this project is to develop a novel CCPP vaccine based on the fastest-growing mycoplasma species to date, mycoplasma feriruminatoris (M.feri). M. feri was isolated from wild goats and has a generation time of less than 30 minutes. M. feri genes encoding virulent factors will be deleted, creating space for insertion of Mccp genes that encode known and predicted vaccine candidate antigens. Goats will be vaccinated with the inactivated or live new recombinant vaccine, then experimentally infected with Mccp to determine whether the vaccine is protective. This project will use cutting-edge synthetic biology tools to construct a vaccine for CCPP that will grow efficiently, express protective Mccp antigens, and be used either as a live or inactivated vaccine. This 24-month project is a collaboration between the University of Bern in Switzerland, the Institut national de la recherche agronomique at the University of Bordeaux, France, and the J. Craig Venter Institute in the USA.

Working Lives, Health and Well...being of Tanzanian Fish and Seaweed Farmers - Building an Authentic Research Partnership and Implementation Strategy to Advance Better Working Conditions, Food Security, Gender and Health Equity in the Face of Globalized Aquaculture
more

Employment opportunities for w...omen are increasingly recognized as a vital strategy for poverty reduction in view of overwhelming evidence of direct links between jobs and women's and children's health. When women are employed, they use their wages to feed and educate their children and support their families. Rates of infant mortality and population growth decline, thus improving additional prospects for global ecosystem health. These facts were recognized by the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health who called for improvement of the well-being of girls and women and the circumstances in which their children are born . Research has shown that health risks can arise from structural gender inequalities which include lower education levels, lack of autonomy, societal preference for sons, barriers to land ownership and poorer access to employment and health care. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-producing sector in the world -employing 19.3 million people globally and more than 300,000 in Africa. Tanzanian women have been historically engaged in artisanal fishing and marketing which has provided fundamental sources of income and food for their families. Yet the emerging, more lucrative commercial aquaculture sector is increasingly dominated by men due to discrimination against women for jobs and in land ownership. Women are finding employment in post-harvest fish processing and marine seaweed harvesting which have been shown to be associated with adverse working conditions, inequitable economic benefits and significant life changes. Research on these conditions, inequities and impacts, in Africa, is scant to non-existent. The purpose of this application is to launch a research collaboration with an international research team and stakeholders through five days of meetings and site visits in Tanzania. The outcome will be a grant proposal that will examine these gender and health inequities in relation to fish farming and aquaculture work in Tanzania.

IMPROVING DIETARY AND HEALTH D...ATA FOR DECISION-MAKING IN AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION ACTIONS IN AFRICA
more
|
Improving Dietary and Health D...ata for Decision-Making in Agriculture and Nutrition Actions in Africa
more
|
Sub-Saharan Africa has the hig...hest level of food and nutrition insecurity in the world. Despite many interventions, access to accurate and reliable information about the nutrition and health of individuals is severely lacking. This problem is intensified due to time-consuming and expensive primary data collection methods, which are especially challenging in remote locations. With strong national and international investments to reduce all forms of malnutrition, it is essential to find reliable field-friendly ways to collect information that can be readily available for making decisions on nutrition interventions. This project, implemented in collaboration with the South Africa-based Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network, will address the data gap by developing an information and communications technology-based platform for collecting real-time nutrition data. It builds on the growing recognition that digital platforms can support transformational advances in agriculture, nutrition, and other sustainable development objectives by combining the accuracy and frequency of recording events in near-real time at a low cost. Researchers will develop a front-end mobile application designed to be user-friendly and operable, even by largely illiterate individuals, along with a back-end web system that serves as a database and dashboard for data analysis. Innovative methods will be tested whereby households can provide their own data directly using icons, photos, interactive voice response, and games. Gender dynamics will be considered throughout the project, and the capacity of women to access and use the data collection tools will be enhanced. The mobile application will initially be tested in Kenyan communities and expanded to two other African countries. Results will be closely monitored and validated by comparing collected data with traditional methods and through engagement with other stakeholders in the nutrition sector. It will also be made accessible to interested stakeholders involved in national and international programming.

EXPLORING BARRIERS TO HEALTHY ...AND SATISFYING AGING IN UGANDA SUB SAHARAN AFRICA
more
|
Exploring Barriers to Healthy ...and Satisfying Aging in Uganda sub Saharan Africa
more
|
Populations globally are aging.... However, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) will see the greatest absolute rise in it's elderly population (60+) by the end of the century. At the same time, SSA's elderly already have the highest global burdens of disease and lowest global levels of subjective wellbeing. This is likely to worsen given the growing elderly population on the continent. Aging in SSA is occurring in contexts of high rates of income inequality, food and water insecurity, poor social security, and growing disease burdens. These contexts prevent opportunities for healthy aging and quality of life in old age. Given these challenges, this research draws on multiple theories to investigate senior's (50+) perceptions, experiences and barriers to healthy aging and quality of life. Using qualitative methods from a research case study, preliminary findings suggest certain context (i.e. social, economic, cultural, environmental, political) and composition (i.e. age, gender, marital status, family composition) factors shape experiences over the life course to enhance or restrict healthy aging and quality of life in old age. Findings from the study support policies that address both the psycho-social and physical changes associated with aging in order to ensure opportunities for healthy aging, quality of life, and continued social integration in old age.The project will benefit Uganda and sub Saharan Africa.

The project aims to support th...e World Food Programme (WFP) in the fight against hunger. WFP is partnering with the private sector, agriculture producers, African governments and other stakeholders to support the establishment of commercially sustainable factories in Ethiopia and Rwanda to produce Supercereal Plus, a fortified cereal that responds specifically to the nutritional needs of children aged 6-24 months. Project activities include: (1) purchasing Supercereal Plus from the three factories for five years to be used for WFP operations, and (2) using Supercereal Plus a locally-produced product in its nutrition programmes in 11 African countries.

IMPROVING HOUSEHOLD NUTRITION ...SECURITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE CARICOM
more
|
Improving household nutrition ...security and public health in the CARICOM
more
|
Non-communicable diseases and ...food insecurity are significant problems that threaten human and economic development in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Deaths from non-communicable diseases are the highest in the Americas, while the economic cost ranges from 1.4 to 8% of the region's gross domestic product. The health of CARICOM populations is intrinsically tied to diets, as seen by the region's startlingly high rates of obesity, overweight, and other nutrition-related risk factors. The healthiness of local diets is ultimately determined by the food system, characterized by the local production capacity, the availability of and access to healthy foods, and market characteristics that include the importation and proliferation of unhealthy processed foods. Since 2007, with the Jagdeo Initiative and the Port of Spain Declaration, there has been strong interest and commitment by CARICOM heads of government to improve the region's food system to address food security and to improve health through nutritious diets. Despite these efforts, implementation of national policies and action plans for enhanced food and nutrition security remains challenging and incomplete.Building on these political commitments, this project engages strong research institutions in the region to demonstrate how integrated agricultural and public health innovations, implemented through community initiatives and public policy interventions, can provide an effective approach to address the high burden of non-communicable diseases in the Caribbean. This project will focus on three countries (St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica) and will investigate the structural, policy, and behavioural conditions that drive food production and consumption. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, researchers will identify the best ways, including gender sensitive approaches, for aligning multi-sectoral policies to enhance food production, distribution, and accessibility. Finally, it will design and test scalable multi-sectoral interventions to address agriculture, food security, nutrition, and health priorities through different entry points, including school meal programs and school environments.

A comparative study of child m...arriage and parenthood in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Zambia
more
|
The aim of this project is to ...enhance the understanding of the complexities of child marriage and parenthood to inform policies and programming. The project will generate new evidence of international relevance, and by taking a comparative approach, it will contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycles of poverty and gender inequality. Studies to date have emphasized the drivers and immediate consequences for mothers and their infants. By taking an approach that emphasizes life course poverty and gender inequality, this project will help uncover how interventions in health, education, violence, and livelihoods need to be adapted to meet the needs of adolescent parents or children who are married, in order to have a positive effect on girls' and boys' trajectories. The overall research will be led by Young Lives (University of Oxford). The research will be undertaken in collaboration with Child Frontiers (Zambia) and Grupo de Analisis para el Desarollo – GRADE (Peru). A socio-ecological life course perspective will guide the research, which will use mixed methods, including quantitative as well as participatory approaches. It will also use a relational approach to gender and generation, examining the relationships, power structures, and norms and practices that influence adolescents' and young people's transitions, not only in terms of motherhood and marriage but also with respect to boys, marriage, fatherhood, and the formation of new households. To ensure uptake, an innovative engagement plan will be developed that involves key stakeholders from the outset, especially those drafting policies related to Sustainable Development Goal #5, Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

This project aims to help 10,0...00 women and men with disabilities to find sustainable employment and increase their household incomes. The project seeks to identify and address the key causes of chronic unemployment, underemployment, and poverty of women and men with disabilities in Dhaka, Bangladesh; Hyderabad, India; and Kathmandu, Nepal. It focuses on three sectors that employ a proportionally large number of people with disabilities: cottage or home-based industries, the hospitality sector, and food processing. The project seeks to influence small and medium enterprises to hire and promote people with disabilities, as well as increase the employability of persones with disabilities. It supports 300 employers in offering work placements for people with disabilities, thereby providing positive models for other employers in the target countries.

The Canadian International Foo...d Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research projects that address food security challenges in the developing world. It is jointly funded, coordinated, and implemented in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and uses the combined expertise of both organizations to maximize the impact of the projects funded. Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households. Women and girls are particularly targeted by this project since they face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. The objectives of the CIFSRF are: (1) to increase food security in developing countries by funding applied research in agricultural development and nutrition; (2) to apply Canadian science and technology expertise in collaboration with developing country partners to address food security; (3) to use research results to inform food security policies and programs; and (4) to identify innovations and scale up the most promising research from both Phase I and Phase II of the Fund to help meet future global food demand. Phase II focuses geographically on the 20 countries already targeted under Phase I as well as all other official development assistance-eligible countries in Africa. Project activities for phase II include: (1) developing farming methods that can better withstand the effects of climate change; (2) developing environmentally sustainable gender-sensitive, farmer-led research models for breeding and distribution of new crops or underutilized traditional crops and consumption of sufficient, safe and nutritious food; (3) improving family-based aquaculture; (4) decreasing domestic animal losses through development of vaccines; and (5) reducing post-harvest losses through adaptable and affordable technologies. Partnership is an important aspect of the CIFSRF and all the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. These partnerships harness Canada's expertise in agriculture and nutritional science and combine it with first-hand knowledge and expertise in developing countries, to maximize the benefit for development activities. This project seeks to support ...Burkina Faso's Ministry of National Education and Literacy (MENA) in implementing its Basic Education Strategic Development Program (PDSEB) for the 2017-2022 period. This is done by helping to improve access to quality education for girls and boys aged 6 to 16. The program is also helping to achieve gender parity in terms of access to post primary education and the completion of primary and post primary education. Project activities include the following: (1) building and equipping approximately 4,000 new classrooms each year for primary and post primary schools; (2) increasing the number of qualified teachers to approximately 105,000 by 2021; (3) adopting specific measures to encourage girls' education; (4) setting up training programs tailored to out of school youth, training teachers and implementing new curricula; (5) providing textbooks; (6) strengthening school management committees and MENA's archiving and internal control systems.

Civil registration provides le...gal identity to individuals, enabling them to prove family ties, their place and date of birth, and fulfill their rights and obligations. It can facilitate access to essential services such as education and health and contribute to exercising political rights, transferring property, and accessing financial services. However, the gender-related aspects of civil registration systems remain under-researched and a reliable and permanent flow of data generated from civil registration is needed to support better evidence-based national administrative systems and planning. This projects aims to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems to become gender sensitive and to produce consistently high-quality vital statistics for development decision-making. The project, implemented in collaboration with the UN Population Fund, will pilot and advance a new questionnaire for use in assessing civil registration coverage in approximately 120 population censuses to be conducted in the 2019-2024 period. It will also support targeted capacity building for national statistical offices on generating vital statistics from civil registration, and it will train a new cadre of young population data scientists who are now in very short supply. Research in four to five focus countries will examine the root causes and the social and economic consequences of non-registration of vital events for women, specifically the under-registration of female deaths; evaluate the benefits of communication interventions and new technologies at the community level to improve registration of vital events; and investigate the impact of coupling innovative digitization and evidence-based social and behaviour change interventions on birth, marriage, and death registration completeness. This information will help boost the demand for civil registration and vital statistics as a means to secure the rights of women and children. Expected outcomes include new tools, methodologies, and technical guidance to assess coverage and measure the completeness of birth, marriage, and death registration; increased capacity of national statistical offices to analyze and use data from incomplete civil registration coverage; and a cohort of young researchers in statistics who are able to support future country-level programs and initiatives.

|
|

NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY IN... RURAL CHINA: AN ASSESSMENT OF SCHOOL FEEDING SYSTEM
more
|
Nutrition and food security in... rural China: An assessment of school feeding system
more
|
The school feeding system in C...hina provides 180 to 200 days of meals a year to rural children from economically disadvantaged provinces that have a high incidence of malnutrition. The program covers 14 provinces, 100 counties, and over three million children. In order to make policy adjustments and expand the benefits to other low-income areas of the country, it is essential to measure the impact of the system. The purpose of this study is to assess China's school feeding system under its National Nutrition Improvement Plan to better understand the system's impact on rural students, local food security, and sustainable economic growth. Researchers will assess the quality of the meals and nutrient intake by children aged seven to 15 in relation to their health and nutritional status, school attendance, and educational outcomes. Economic impact on local communities will be monitored to understand if and how the system affects local food production, procurement, and employment, particularly for women. To improve the potential impacts of the system on nutritional outcomes, additional interventions (including nutrition education and capacity development for women and men) will be introduced in a selected number of schools over a period of two years, and their impact will be evaluated. The project will be led by the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF) in collaboration with several strategic participating institutions, including the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Food Program, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, Microsoft, Amway Charity Foundation, and the Capital Healthcare and Nutrition Cuisine Society. Although the research focuses on China, results and outcomes have the potential to be used widely in other countries in Asia where school feeding programs are an entry point to target food security, nutrition, and school performance among school-aged children.

Deciphering the Cognitive and ...Neural Mechanisms Underlying Auditory Learning
more
|
This project seeks to understa...nd the brain mechanisms necessary for people to learn to perceive sounds. Neural circuits and learningThe research team will test people with and without musical training to evaluate their capacity to learn sound patterns. They will scan the subjects with magnetic resonance imaging to determine the neural circuits that underlie these abilities. Musicians from Israel and India will be compared to determine how cultural factors affect learning. Specifically, the project aims to:-understand how the brain learns by examining the influence of auditory learning-test well-controlled musical training procedures in different linguistic and cultural environments-identify which brain areas and parameters are modified by auditory learning-further develop the training environment and collaborative research across the research sitesThe findings will help us to understand learning mechanisms that can be applied to predict learning problems. The research team will also test persons with dyslexia to understand how this disorder may be related to impairments in the person's ability to learn new sound patterns.Project leadershipThe project lead is Robert Zatorre at McGill University, Canada. His collaborators are Merav Ahissar, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and Nandini C. Singh, the National Brain Research Centre, India.Project fundingThis project is funded through the first research competition of the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Initiative. The Initiative is a collaboration between the Azrieli Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Israel Science Foundation, and Canada's International Development Research Centre.

Evaluation of capacity buildin...g achievements of the Ecohealth Program
more
|
This project will support the ...2017–2018 evaluation of diverse capacity-building activities carried out by the former Ecohealth Program. This is in response to the program's last external review, as well as feedback received from the Centre's senior management, including discussions with the Board of Governors during the presentation of results from the review. The evaluation will focus on the program's training, curriculum development, and implementation of diverse types of courses on ecosystems and human health. It will include an assessment of the continued evolution and use of the selected capacity-building activities, and their-long term impacts on individual scientists, organizations, and institutions in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Attention to gender equity will be a requirement of the evaluation. The evaluation will also aim to inform IDRC's Food, Environment and Health program on its future support of capacity building approaches that bring together different disciplines and multi-sector actions in disease prevention and health promotion, in ways that promote integration of health, environmental sustainability, and development perspectives in support of new and emerging fields of research.

APPLYING LESSONS FROM THE ECOH...EALTH APPROACH TO MAKE FOOD SYSTEMS HEALTHIER
more
|
Applying lessons from the ecoh...ealth approach to make food systems healthier
more
|
For the past 20 years, Souther...n and Northern research teams have promoted the field of ecohealth, an emerging field that studies how changes in the earth's ecosystems affect human health. These researchers have accumulated significant experience in developing interdisciplinary and participatory research and practice to address the interdependencies between health, environment, and social development. In August 2018, the biennial Ecohealth Congress of the International Association for Ecology and Health will take place in Colombia, hosted by the Universidad del Valle. Its overall theme is Environmental and health equity: Connecting local alternatives in a global world, which includes Healthy food and clean water for all as one of its four themes. Though multiple projects have worked at the interface between ecosystems, agriculture, and health, this project will address a relevant gap in ecohealth research. A team convened by the University del Valle will assess how ecohealth principles can be extrapolated to the field of food systems research for the prevention of non-communicable diseases. Public health, nutrition, and multidisciplinary systems approaches are necessary to guide evidence-based, intersectoral policies that address the notable increase in obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular diseases in developing countries. The project will provide support to sponsor the participation of young leaders and local change actors from low and middle-income countries at the Congress, as well as senior scientists from the ecohealth and food systems disciplines. It will support a set of background studies from past and current projects aiming to assess the usefulness of ecohealth principles to inform research and practice on food systems, establish and facilitate a working dialogue between both communities, and organize a pre-congress workshop on An ecohealth perspective to food systems research. The project is expected to set the bar for future cooperative relationships that will engage ecohealth and food systems practitioners and promote research that addresses the social and environmental determinants of healthy diets in low and middle-income countries.

DEVELOPMENT OF A CROSS-PROTECT...IVE SYNTHETIC RNA VACCINE AGAINST FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (FMD)
more
|
Development of a cross-protect...ive synthetic RNA vaccine against foot and mouth disease (FMD)
more
|
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) i...s the most contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals and poses a substantial economic risk to the agricultural sector in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). FMD is endemic in many parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Although a disease of low mortality, the impact of FMD is significant due to the huge numbers of animals affected and the fact that endemic FMD countries are not allowed to export their animal products. It is estimated that FMD in LMICs is responsible for losses of up to US$8.8 million every year. The most cost-effective method for preventing and controlling FMD is vaccination. Current vaccines against FMD are killed viruses, which involve a number of drawbacks, including: poor stability that compromises production and field potency; poor immunogenicity (the ability to confer immunity) and incomplete protection requiring frequent boosters; and high antigenic variability (the ability to evade a host immune response), causing difficulty in matching the antigenic profiles of vaccine and field-strain viruses. To overcome these challenges, this project will use a novel nanoparticle approach to design and produce a synthetic thermostable RNA vaccine with the capacity to protect livestock against multiple FMD strains. The platform relies on chemical and enzymatic synthesis reactions that are easily scaled for final production, and that eliminate the need for infectious virus or cell culture intermediates. The technology is capable of delivering self-replicating mRNAs in nanoparticles to host cells upon intramuscular injection. In addition, the antigenic FMD virus VP1 capsid antigen will be expressed along with the warning signals that typically accompany viral infection, making this a potent and highly effective vaccine. This project is a collaboration between Tiba Biotechnology (Boston, USA), Moredun Research Institute (Edinburgh, UK), and Agricultural Research Council-Ondestepoort Veterinary Institute (Pretoria, South Africa). It is funded through the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF), a partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
