DEVELOPMENT OF A CROSS-PROTECT...IVE SYNTHETIC RNA VACCINE AGAINST FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (FMD)
more
|
Development of a cross-protect...ive synthetic RNA vaccine against foot and mouth disease (FMD)
more
|
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) i...s the most contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals and poses a substantial economic risk to the agricultural sector in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). FMD is endemic in many parts of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Although a disease of low mortality, the impact of FMD is significant due to the huge numbers of animals affected and the fact that endemic FMD countries are not allowed to export their animal products. It is estimated that FMD in LMICs is responsible for losses of up to US$8.8 million every year. The most cost-effective method for preventing and controlling FMD is vaccination. Current vaccines against FMD are killed viruses, which involve a number of drawbacks, including: poor stability that compromises production and field potency; poor immunogenicity (the ability to confer immunity) and incomplete protection requiring frequent boosters; and high antigenic variability (the ability to evade a host immune response), causing difficulty in matching the antigenic profiles of vaccine and field-strain viruses. To overcome these challenges, this project will use a novel nanoparticle approach to design and produce a synthetic thermostable RNA vaccine with the capacity to protect livestock against multiple FMD strains. The platform relies on chemical and enzymatic synthesis reactions that are easily scaled for final production, and that eliminate the need for infectious virus or cell culture intermediates. The technology is capable of delivering self-replicating mRNAs in nanoparticles to host cells upon intramuscular injection. In addition, the antigenic FMD virus VP1 capsid antigen will be expressed along with the warning signals that typically accompany viral infection, making this a potent and highly effective vaccine. This project is a collaboration between Tiba Biotechnology (Boston, USA), Moredun Research Institute (Edinburgh, UK), and Agricultural Research Council-Ondestepoort Veterinary Institute (Pretoria, South Africa). It is funded through the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF), a partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and IDRC. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

BUILDING CAPACITY FOR RESEARCH... ON PRIVACY AND GENDER

Building Capacity for Research... on Privacy and Gender
more
|
The right to privacy is founda...tional for human development: it is a safeguard for the right to dignity, for autonomy, and for freedom of thought, expression, and assembly in democratic societies. The right to privacy as a constitutional guarantee protects citizens and consumers from, and provides legal recourse against, discrimination on the basis of gender, race, faith, and class. While the rapid expansion and adoption of information communication technologies (ICTs) and global networks affords many benefits and efficiency gains, it also represents a rise in surveillance and censorship. The capacities of the state and private entities to track citizens, consumers, and users is unprecedented in scale and scope. Through data mining and other profiling techniques, governments can prevent access to services or restrict movement, while companies can exclude people from opportunities, restrict access to markets, and exercise unfair differential pricing. People living at the margins of society, including women, trans, and gender-diverse peoples, are most vulnerable and susceptible to discrimination and harm. However, there has been little research that focuses on the intersection between the question of privacy in the digital age and gender. In particular, there is a need to explore the way surveillance is a tool in perpetuating patriarchy, particularly with respect to identity, online gender-based violence, sexual rights, and reproductive rights. The Privacy International global research network studies questions around the right to privacy, data protection, biometrics, and surveillance in the digital age. It has been successful in contributing to public policy discourse, curtailing potentially harmful surveillance, and influencing national policy towards robust data protection frameworks in a number of countries. This project aims to strengthen the capacities of member partners in the Privacy International global research network in addressing gender inequality with respect to the design, promotion, and deployment of national identification systems and surveillance apparatus and to advance women's empowerment and prevent or reduce harm.

ACHIEVING GENDER EQUALITY THRO...UGH STRONGER CIVIL REGISTRATION AND VITAL STATISTICS (CRVS) SYSTEMS
more
|
Achieving gender equality thro...ugh stronger civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems
more
|
Building and sustaining politi...cal momentum and identifying evidence-based solutions is essential to achieve the 2030 Agenda. With its emphasis on leaving no one behind, population data that is disaggregated by sex and geography is a fundamental requirement for this agenda. However, many countries' official statistics only publish averages that are gender-blind and mask inequalities. As a result, a growing number of international development organizations and UN bodies are urging countries to invest in their civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems. Reliable vital statistics data drawn from civil registration systems are the preferred source of indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals. This project builds on the outcomes of a global meeting convened at IDRC in Ottawa in February 2018, Making the Invisible Visible: CRVS as a basis to meeting the 2030 Gender Agenda. The meeting assessed the status of the field, identified research gaps, and focussed on positioning gender within the global CRVS agenda. A second convening of high-level and technical experts in Ottawa in February 2020 aims to assess progress since 2018 and inspire further global commitments to integrate gender analysis across activities that strengthen CRVS systems. A two-day event will evaluate opportunities and challenges and offer a forum for candid discussion around what is effective and what is not in national and international efforts to ensure that all civil and vital life events are universally registered and disaggregated by sex. Presentations and discussions will focus squarely around the question of what needs to change to strengthen CRVS systems for inclusive development. A combination of high-level and technical panels will move discussions beyond advocacy to concrete ideas for operationalizing solutions. Panel themes will focus on areas where more knowledge and innovation are needed, such as exploring the gender dimensions around linking national ID management and CRVS systems, and CRVS systems in fragile or vulnerable environments. The event will also support a deep dive into the vital statistics side of CRVS systems and look at how better data governance, open data use, improvements in linking data and statistics to policies and programs, and monitoring results can promote further investments in CRVS systems.

Civil registration provides le...gal identity to individuals, enabling them to prove family ties, their place and date of birth, and fulfill their rights and obligations. It can facilitate access to essential services such as education and health and contribute to exercising political rights, transferring property, and accessing financial services. However, the gender-related aspects of civil registration systems remain under-researched and a reliable and permanent flow of data generated from civil registration is needed to support better evidence-based national administrative systems and planning. This projects aims to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems to become gender sensitive and to produce consistently high-quality vital statistics for development decision-making. The project, implemented in collaboration with the UN Population Fund, will pilot and advance a new questionnaire for use in assessing civil registration coverage in approximately 120 population censuses to be conducted in the 2019-2024 period. It will also support targeted capacity building for national statistical offices on generating vital statistics from civil registration, and it will train a new cadre of young population data scientists who are now in very short supply. Research in four to five focus countries will examine the root causes and the social and economic consequences of non-registration of vital events for women, specifically the under-registration of female deaths; evaluate the benefits of communication interventions and new technologies at the community level to improve registration of vital events; and investigate the impact of coupling innovative digitization and evidence-based social and behaviour change interventions on birth, marriage, and death registration completeness. This information will help boost the demand for civil registration and vital statistics as a means to secure the rights of women and children. Expected outcomes include new tools, methodologies, and technical guidance to assess coverage and measure the completeness of birth, marriage, and death registration; increased capacity of national statistical offices to analyze and use data from incomplete civil registration coverage; and a cohort of young researchers in statistics who are able to support future country-level programs and initiatives.

EAST AFRICAN GEOHEALTH HUB FOR... PREVENTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS
more
|
East African GEOHealth hub for... preventing environmental and occupational health risks
more
|
The burden of disease from env...ironmental and occupational health hazards and climate change is a growing concern in eastern Africa. A significant portion of this burden is preventable, but most countries in the region lack the research capacity to analyze environmental health risks and assess policy implications. In addition, government infrastructure for environmental health monitoring, regulation, and enforcement is limited. To tackle these multi-dimensional challenges, this project aims to establish a regional hub of training and research excellence in eastern Africa with Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The primary focus is to reduce the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which is responsible for high and rising rates of disease and death in the region. The project also addresses emerging occupational health and safety problems from climate change in agriculture. Pilot research aims to analyze and reduce occupational heat stress in key industries of the region (e.g., flower greenhouses), engaging industry to validate models for predicting current and future health risks to workers. The long-term objectives of the project are to build capacity and leadership in eastern Africa for conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary health research, extending a solution-oriented research portfolio to other countries, and addressing key priority problems in the region on environmental and occupational health. The project is being implemented under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The overall research component of the hub is led by Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Uganda's Makerere University, Maasai Mara University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya, and the University of Rwanda. The research component is closely integrated with a tailored training program for research leaders in the region headed by the universities of Southern California and Wisconsin-Madison.

A comparative study of child m...arriage and parenthood in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Zambia
more
|
The aim of this project is to ...enhance the understanding of the complexities of child marriage and parenthood to inform policies and programming. The project will generate new evidence of international relevance, and by taking a comparative approach, it will contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycles of poverty and gender inequality. Studies to date have emphasized the drivers and immediate consequences for mothers and their infants. By taking an approach that emphasizes life course poverty and gender inequality, this project will help uncover how interventions in health, education, violence, and livelihoods need to be adapted to meet the needs of adolescent parents or children who are married, in order to have a positive effect on girls' and boys' trajectories. The overall research will be led by Young Lives (University of Oxford). The research will be undertaken in collaboration with Child Frontiers (Zambia) and Grupo de Analisis para el Desarollo – GRADE (Peru). A socio-ecological life course perspective will guide the research, which will use mixed methods, including quantitative as well as participatory approaches. It will also use a relational approach to gender and generation, examining the relationships, power structures, and norms and practices that influence adolescents' and young people's transitions, not only in terms of motherhood and marriage but also with respect to boys, marriage, fatherhood, and the formation of new households. To ensure uptake, an innovative engagement plan will be developed that involves key stakeholders from the outset, especially those drafting policies related to Sustainable Development Goal '5, Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

IMPROVING DIETARY AND HEALTH D...ATA FOR DECISION-MAKING IN AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION ACTIONS IN AFRICA
more
|
Improving Dietary and Health D...ata for Decision-Making in Agriculture and Nutrition Actions in Africa
more
|
Sub-Saharan Africa has the hig...hest level of food and nutrition insecurity in the world. Despite many interventions, access to accurate and reliable information about the nutrition and health of individuals is severely lacking. This problem is intensified due to time-consuming and expensive primary data collection methods, which are especially challenging in remote locations. With strong national and international investments to reduce all forms of malnutrition, it is essential to find reliable field-friendly ways to collect information that can be readily available for making decisions on nutrition interventions. This project, implemented in collaboration with the South Africa-based Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network, will address the data gap by developing an information and communications technology-based platform for collecting real-time nutrition data. It builds on the growing recognition that digital platforms can support transformational advances in agriculture, nutrition, and other sustainable development objectives by combining the accuracy and frequency of recording events in near-real time at a low cost. Researchers will develop a front-end mobile application designed to be user-friendly and operable, even by largely illiterate individuals, along with a back-end web system that serves as a database and dashboard for data analysis. Innovative methods will be tested whereby households can provide their own data directly using icons, photos, interactive voice response, and games. Gender dynamics will be considered throughout the project, and the capacity of women to access and use the data collection tools will be enhanced. The mobile application will initially be tested in Kenyan communities and expanded to two other African countries. Results will be closely monitored and validated by comparing collected data with traditional methods and through engagement with other stakeholders in the nutrition sector. It will also be made accessible to interested stakeholders involved in national and international programming.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR CRVS ...SYSTEMS: THE VULNERABILITY OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHOSE CIVIL STATUS IS NOT REGISTERED IN ETHIOPIA
more
|
Centre of Excellence for CRVS ...Systems: The vulnerability of internally displaced women and children whose civil status is not registered in Ethiopia
more
|
Emergencies and displacements ...create major challenges to the provision of effective civil registration services such as marriages, births, and deaths. Restoring registration activities and clearing backlogs after emergencies are often complex and costly undertakings requiring specific legal, operational, and policy provisions. Civil registration is a critical tool for protecting fundamental human rights and freedoms. When civil registration systems fail due to conflicts and emergencies, people are unable to register vital events or obtain proof of identity and civil status. Without this proof, they are unable to access critical social services such as health, education, and social welfare. This can have catastrophic consequences for women and children, who are especially vulnerable to gender-based and sexual violence in situations of conflict and fragility, and who are the first victims of conflict. Without proof of civil status or legal identity, they are even more vulnerable because they are unable to access the social services they need, nor can they prove links to their countries of origin. Proving these links is key in order to return to their countries of origin or to be relocated to another safe country by mandated United Nations agencies. This project is supported under the Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems, a joint initiative of IDRC and Global Affairs Canada. With the collaboration of Addis Ababa University, the project will assess the existing legal and policy environment related to CRVS and examine the effect of civil registration status on the vulnerability of women and children displaced due to ethnic conflicts in Ethiopia. This study will examine the impact of the lack of documentation on access to humanitarian and other essential services, as well as vulnerability to sexual abuse, food insecurity, poor health, school dropouts, and conflict with the host population over resources. Previous studies on the subject have either examined the importance of identity documentation or the vulnerability of internally displaced populations, but few have considered the link between access to identity documentation and vulnerability. This will, therefore, be an important contribution to the field. Expected outputs include a peer-reviewed publication and a high-level synthesis report that will be presented to the Civil Registration Technical Advisory Group to propose legislative modifications for internally displaced population-facilitated registration.

NUTRITIOUS MAIZE FOR ETHIOPIA/...MAÏS NUTRITIF POUR L'ÉTHIOPIE

Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia/...Maïs nutritif pour l'Éthiopie
more
|
This project aims to improve h...ousehold food security and nutrition in Ethiopia for an estimated 3.98 million people by promoting widespread adoption of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) varieties amongst growers and consumers of maize. Also known as corn, maize is an essential food source for Ethiopians. QPM is a non-genetically engineered form of maize. The maize contains a naturally derived gene mutation of maize which has a higher content of two essential amino acids necessary to synthesize proteins within the human body after consumption, and provides twice as much nutritional value as common maize. The project supports the adoption of QPM as well as increases in farm productivity and household incomes through the expansion of the maize seed industry. Project activities include: introducing QPM seed and food products to farmers (women and men) engaged in subsistence-level maize production as a means to meet household basic food requirements; disseminating gender-sensitive crop management practices to farmers and agricultural extension officers; and strengthening local capacity of researchers, seed producers, and seed suppliers on the production, distribution, and quality control of QPM seeds. Nutritious Maize for Ethiopia (NuME) is an initiative of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), a member centre of the Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research (CGIAR). CIMMYT is implementing the project in collaboration with the Ethiopian Institute for Agriculture Research, Ethiopia's Ministry of Agriculture, Farm Radio International, a Canadian non-governmental organization, and Sasakawa Global 2000 (SG2000), an international non-governmental organization.

The Canadian International Foo...d Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) supports applied research projects that address food security challenges in the developing world. It is jointly funded, coordinated, and implemented in collaboration with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and uses the combined expertise of both organizations to maximize the impact of the projects funded. Through investments in applied research, the CIFSRF contributes to the development of more productive, sustainable, and gender-sensitive agricultural techniques for women subsistence farmers, with the ultimate goal of making food sources more secure and accessible, and the food produced more nutritious, for poor households. Women and girls are particularly targeted by this project since they face the heaviest burden of chronic hunger and malnutrition in developing countries. The objectives of the CIFSRF are: (1) to increase food security in developing countries by funding applied research in agricultural development and nutrition; (2) to apply Canadian science and technology expertise in collaboration with developing country partners to address food security; (3) to use research results to inform food security policies and programs; and (4) to identify innovations and scale up the most promising research from both Phase I and Phase II of the Fund to help meet future global food demand. Phase II focuses geographically on the 20 countries already targeted under Phase I as well as all other official development assistance-eligible countries in Africa. Project activities for phase II include: (1) developing farming methods that can better withstand the effects of climate change; (2) developing environmentally sustainable gender-sensitive, farmer-led research models for breeding and distribution of new crops or underutilized traditional crops and consumption of sufficient, safe and nutritious food; (3) improving family-based aquaculture; (4) decreasing domestic animal losses through development of vaccines; and (5) reducing post-harvest losses through adaptable and affordable technologies. Partnership is an important aspect of the CIFSRF and all the research projects funded are jointly conducted by Canadian and developing country-based organizations, such as academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, or research institutions. These partnerships harness Canada's expertise in agriculture and nutritional science and combine it with first-hand knowledge and expertise in developing countries, to maximize the benefit for development activities. West African Research and Trai...ning Hub on Environmental and Occupational Health in the Informal Economy
more
|
This project will help establi...sh a West African Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEO Health) Hub in environmental and occupational health. It will aim to enhance regional capacity and leadership for world-class research, training, and innovation to address national and regional health priorities. The hub will also inform policy development. Hazards in the informal economy Sub-Saharan Africa's informal economy contributes over half of the region's gross domestic product and supports 80% of the workforce. In West Africa, nine in 10 workers have informal jobs in economic activities related to agriculture, mining, transport, trade, and commerce. Many are regularly exposed to multiple environmental and occupational health hazards. There is little research or documentation related to the associated health risks and disease burdens, as well as a lack of scientific evidence to guide prevention and mitigation. To improve opportunities for better livelihoods in this vast economic sector, fast and sustained improvement in health and safety is critical. Research and training hub for West Africa This project will establish the hub under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The hub leverages existing strengths across Francophone and Anglophone countries. It is founded on a long-standing partnership between the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. It brings together a group of African and Canadian institutions, including: -Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -Ghana's Ministry of Health -McGill University -Ecohealth Community of Practice for West and Central Africa (spanning Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal) -University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Environmental and occupational health research The hub will enhance regional capacity for world-class research in environmental and occupational health in the informal sector. It will also build African leadership to guide national and regional policies for reducing environmental and occupational health hazards. The initial research focuses on documenting and reducing health threats associated with processing electronic waste (e-waste), small-scale gold mining, and air pollution impacts from the informal transport sector. All three economic activities produce significant levels of environmental contamination and pose elevated health risks to highly vulnerable workers in the informal sectors and their families.

Through partnerships with loca...l organizations, the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) expects to help farmers in the Upper West Region overcome constraints and become viable economic partners. MEDA seeks to provide ongoing training, capacity building and mentoring of Ghanaian government agencies (District Assemblies, Regional Planning and Coordination Units, Ministry of Food and Agriculture extension services) and non-government organizations. Targeting women and their families, MEDA intends to undertake activities to improve: production (improved input supplies, awareness of improved techniques, drip irrigation technologies, credit, training); post-harvest handling (storage, sorting, processing such as solar drying, customized loan products, training); and facilitation of market linkages (sales agent model, strategies to deal more effectively with traders, market information and ability to use market information in sales transactions, basic business management and access to target markets).

The purpose of this project is... to reduce hunger and malnutrition among children and to increase school enrolment rates in Haiti, especially among girls. The project stimulates the local economy in a sustainable manner by purchasing local products from women farmers and entrepreneurs, which would give them more opportunities to contribute to their own economic success and that of their communities. The project's activities include: (1) offering nutritious meals every day to 180,000 school age children, thus encouraging school attendance and academic success of the recipient children; and (2) offering economic opportunities to women in rural areas by making local purchases.

This project aims to help 10,0...00 women and men with disabilities to find sustainable employment and increase their household incomes. The project seeks to identify and address the key causes of chronic unemployment, underemployment, and poverty of women and men with disabilities in Dhaka, Bangladesh; Hyderabad, India; and Kathmandu, Nepal. It focuses on three sectors that employ a proportionally large number of people with disabilities: cottage or home-based industries, the hospitality sector, and food processing. The project seeks to influence small and medium enterprises to hire and promote people with disabilities, as well as increase the employability of persones with disabilities. It supports 300 employers in offering work placements for people with disabilities, thereby providing positive models for other employers in the target countries.

IMPROVING HOUSEHOLD NUTRITION ...SECURITY AND PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE CARICOM
more
|
Improving household nutrition ...security and public health in the CARICOM
more
|
Non-communicable diseases and ...food insecurity are significant problems that threaten human and economic development in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Deaths from non-communicable diseases are the highest in the Americas, while the economic cost ranges from 1.4 to 8% of the region's gross domestic product. The health of CARICOM populations is intrinsically tied to diets, as seen by the region's startlingly high rates of obesity, overweight, and other nutrition-related risk factors. The healthiness of local diets is ultimately determined by the food system, characterized by the local production capacity, the availability of and access to healthy foods, and market characteristics that include the importation and proliferation of unhealthy processed foods. Since 2007, with the Jagdeo Initiative and the Port of Spain Declaration, there has been strong interest and commitment by CARICOM heads of government to improve the region's food system to address food security and to improve health through nutritious diets. Despite these efforts, implementation of national policies and action plans for enhanced food and nutrition security remains challenging and incomplete.Building on these political commitments, this project engages strong research institutions in the region to demonstrate how integrated agricultural and public health innovations, implemented through community initiatives and public policy interventions, can provide an effective approach to address the high burden of non-communicable diseases in the Caribbean. This project will focus on three countries (St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica) and will investigate the structural, policy, and behavioural conditions that drive food production and consumption. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, researchers will identify the best ways, including gender sensitive approaches, for aligning multi-sectoral policies to enhance food production, distribution, and accessibility. Finally, it will design and test scalable multi-sectoral interventions to address agriculture, food security, nutrition, and health priorities through different entry points, including school meal programs and school environments.

|
|

Improving early childhood deve...lopment and well-being in refugee and other marginalized countries
more
|
Early childhood development re...search has traditionally focused on single-intervention initiatives and non-refugee populations. This project will generate evidence to support effective, integrated and scalable early childhood development interventions for disadvantaged populations in low- and middle-income countries. The project will investigate how underprivileged and marginalized environments threaten the development of children and their families. It will identify factors that build resilience in the face of these threats, especially for those who are displaced or are refugees from conflict. It will develop and validate culturally appropriate, gender-sensitive and affordable interventions that will benefit a large number of children and families. The project will then assess the effectiveness of an integrated package of interventions in critical areas of child development in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya, that is home to internally and externally displaced families. It will examine the feasibility and affordability of the package of interventions and the cost of scaling up in the studied communities. The project will also build capacity in the science of early childhood development for frontline workers, researchers and leaders in policy and practice. This includes establishing a sustainable research and policy platform to share programs and practices globally; translating evidence into policy; and enabling expansion, replication and scale-up of effective interventions on the national, regional, and global levels. It will also strengthen the North-South partnership between two key institutions, the Aga Khan University and the Sinai Health System, to establish a well-recognized centre of excellence with the organizational and intellectual capacity to advance a more global science of early human development. The Nairobi project will be co-led by Aga Khan University's Institute of Human Development and the Sinai Health System. It will be part of comparative but separate global work on early childhood development under way in South Africa, Bangladesh, and India that is being conducted by the Alliance for Human Development and its local implementing partners. IDRC and Aga Khan Foundation Canada are co-funding this project.

EVALUATING IMPACTS OF GENDER I...NTEGRATION ON AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY OUTCOMES
more
|
Evaluating impacts of gender i...ntegration on agriculture and food security outcomes
more
|
Women constitute 75% of Kenya'...s agricultural labour force; however, gender inequalities often undermine their productivity and nutritional well-being. This includes unequal access to and control over land, agricultural technologies, extension services, markets, and climate information. Development projects often address gender gaps in resource allocation, with little focus on unequal gender and social norms. This is where the gender-transformative approach comes in. It aims at building social attitudes, behaviours, and structures that support gender equality for people and communities.Studies on the impacts of gender-transformative approaches to household and community food and nutrition security are scarce in Kenya and other parts of Africa. This research project aims to test the two comparable but distinctive approaches (gender-transformative and traditional/business school) and measure their potential for improving gender equality, women's empowerment, women's productivity and income, and the food and nutrition security of smallholder farmers. Randomized control trial design will be applied to compare outcomes. The 30-month study will involve 489 households for close observation while targeting 5,400 (3,000 direct and 2,400 indirect) beneficiaries from Kinangop, Nyandarua County in Kenya. Through this study, CARE Canada will promote gender-transformative programming in light of a changing climate, engage women to realize the benefits of productive, profitable, and equitable agriculture initiatives, and contribute to bridging existing knowledge gaps on the role of gender in agriculture.

|
|

The project aims to strengthen... the farming practices of more than 30,000 smallholder farmers in organic farming by helping them apply ecological principles to how they practise agriculture using participatory, farmer-to-farmer teaching methods. It supports the development of farmer associations and improved marketing through farmer-to-farmer exchanges and training. The project also seeks to pilot a youth-led small business initiative to promote the supply of nutritious foods on the local market while supporting youth livelihoods. The project aims to train 6,000 farming households on sustainable agroecological methods, nutrition, and gender issues and provide technical support to farmers in production and cooperative development. The initiative also supports 200 farmers on a pilot project of growing local yellow maize seeds to improve vitamin A deficiency in young children. In addition, this project aims to train 200 youth and 100 farmers in small business operations and market development, food processing, and preservation methods.

The goal of this project is to... provide women livestock farmers with greater access to and control of economic resources. It aims to increase the productivity of the dairy sector in three districts of southern Punjab in a way that creates opportunities for women to contribute more equitably to the sector. The project supports activities in three main areas: i) The project aims to strengthen 100 existing dairy cooperatives (Farmers' Milk Cooperatives) and establish up to 250 new cooperatives. Activities in this area include: providing the cooperatives with modern milk processing equipment; training farmers in modern techniques for breeding and raising livestock; and establishing local support services such as veterinary workers, artificial insemination technicians, and milk marketing specialists. ii) The project aims to increase the contribution of women livestock farmers to the dairy sector. Activities in this area include: providing the poorest women with assets such as buffalos, barns, feed mixers, and water troughs; providing training on how to use and manage these new assets; and providing training for female executives of the cooperatives to help them become more widely involved across the dairy sector. iii) The project aims to facilitate the creation of connections between farmers, cooperatives, the private sector, and the government. Activities in this area include: poster campaigns to increase the visibility of the cooperatives; media and communications campaigns to engage potential private sector partners for farmers and the cooperatives; and expanding the ability of the cooperatives and the government to provide local educational and advisory services that meet the needs of the dairy sector. The project is expected to benefit up to 12,250 dairy farmers and their families.
