Its goal will be to provide critical insight to the new Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund The LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The LVIF will support innovation and research, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective partnerships between vaccine researchers, the public sector, and the private sector. The goal is to make quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale livestock farmers, and to facilitate their use at scale. Priority diseases, market-ready innovations The project will support commissioned research to inform the program's selection of three to five priority diseases. It will also -assist with the development of the first call for proposals -help identify existing innovations that are almost market-ready and could be funded through the fund's fast-track programming -help identify key partners from the private sector, government, and civil society In addition, the project team will -prepare an Environmental Management Plan -prepare 20 disease monographs on previously identified diseases -prepare, organize, and conduct stakeholder consultations in selected countries -prepare a situation analysis on manufacturing capabilities in the focus regions -prepare a situation analysis on legislative, regulatory, and veterinary support systems in selected countries

The Livestock Vaccine Innovati...on Fund is a partnership of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada, and Canada's IDRC. It supports the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, and South and South East Asia. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective partnerships between vaccine researchers, the public sector, and the private sector to accelerate the registration, commercialization and use of vaccines. The goal is to make quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale livestock farmers, and to facilitate their use at scale. The Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund governance structure consists of a Governance Steering Committee, comprised of one senior member from each donor partner - Global Affairs Canada, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (as an observer), and IDRC, and two external members with vaccine research and private sector-related expertise at the international level. This committee will be responsible for guiding the Fund's overall strategic direction and main priorities. An Expert Review Panel (ERP) will have a technical advisory function and will review, rank, and recommend proposals for funding. It will consist of six regular members plus one chairperson. One representative from each donor partner may also attend the ERP meetings as observers. The chairperson of the Expert Review Panel will be one of the external members of the Governance Steering Committee. This project will contribute to the implementation of the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund and the development of its portfolio of projects. The funds from this project will support expenses associated with the activities of the Governance Steering Committee and the Expert Review Panel, including honoraria, and expenses related to travel and participation in project selection and the Fund's governance meetings, as well as any participation by the committee members in project events.

Development of a novel vaccine... for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia based on a fast-growing Mycoplasma feriruminatoris chassis
more
|
Contagious caprine pleuropneum...onia (CCPP) is a severe respiratory disease of goats and sheep and is caused by a bacterium, Mycoplasma capricolum subsp capripneumoniae (Mccp). CCPP is transmitted by infected aerosol and is characterized by fever, coughing, severe respiratory distress and high mortality. Infected animals become very sick and mostly die within 7-10 days. CCPP mortality and morbidity can reach 70% and 100% respectively. Clinical CCPP occurrence has been reported in 40 countries in Africa and Asia, with isolation of causative organism confirmed in half of these. The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed) estimates that every year, CCPP causes economic losses of up to US $ 507 Million in endemic areas. Goats and sheep are an important source of income for women and CCPP severely affects their ability to provide for their children and family needs. Vaccination remains the most effective and affordable method to control CCPP since antibiotic treatment does not eliminate the bacterium and sanitary measures are not feasible in smallholder settings. The current CCPP vaccine is killed whole bacterium formulated in saponin adjuvant. The vaccine is safe but its protection is short-lived (less than 1 year). Development of a novel vaccine... for contagious caprine pleuropneumonia based on a fast-growing Mycoplasma feriruminatoris chassis

Contagious caprine pleuropneum...onia (CCPP) is a severe respiratory disease of goats and sheep and is caused by a bacterium, Mycoplasma capricolum subsp capripneumoniae (Mccp). CCPP is transmitted by infected aerosol and is characterized by fever, coughing, severe respiratory distress and high mortality. Infected animals become very sick and mostly die within 7-10 days. CCPP mortality and morbidity can reach 70% and 100% respectively. Clinical CCPP occurrence has been reported in 40 countries in Africa and Asia, with isolation of causative organism confirmed in half of these. The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed) estimates that every year, CCPP causes economic losses of up to US $ 507 Million in endemic areas. Goats and sheep are an important source of income for women and CCPP severely affects their ability to provide for their children and family needs. Vaccination remains the most effective and affordable method to control CCPP since antibiotic treatment does not eliminate the bacterium and sanitary measures are not feasible in smallholder settings. The current CCPP vaccine is killed whole bacterium formulated in saponin adjuvant. The vaccine is safe but its protection is short-lived (less than 1 year). The Alliance for a Green Revol...ution in Africa (AGRA) has launched a vast program for increasing agricultural productivity and improving food security in Africa. To have a sustainable impact on food and nutritional security, however, agricultural technologies must be accompanied by appropriate and equitable policies. This requires a critical mass of high-level professionals in agricultural economics and applied agricultural social scientists. This project aims to strengthen the capacity of young African researchers and decision-makers in rigorous policy analysis and advocacy in certain West African countries, mainly Burkina-Faso, Mali, Niger and Bénin. It will do so by offering scholarships in collaboration with Canadian universities, and by strengthening collaboration between Alliance partners and IDRC partners in disseminating the research results to decision-makers.

The project team will select projects using an open competitive call where applicants will submit a concept note, followed by a full proposal for successful applicants. Projects with a value ranging from CA$1 to $3 million will receive funding for a maximum of 30 months.

This funding will help strengt...hen the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Research Organization's (STIPRO) role as a credible public policy institution in Tanzania by enhancing its ability to provide high-quality, influential, and policy-relevant research.About STIPROSTIPRO's mission is to improve human capacity in science, technology and innovation (STI) policy research. It also aims to raise awareness among government officials and parliamentarians of the critical role of this research for evidence-based STI policies. Its research program focuses on linking food security, agricultural and industrial development, health, technology, and the environment. STIPRO receives its funding from the Think Tank Initiative (TTI).Influence through evidence TTI is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions. It will help them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally. For STIPRO, this project will help enhance its research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement. Gender challenges in agricultural research Gender training programs have been successful in sensitizing agricultural researchers and organizations to the importance of gender, but they have been too general. They have not effectively equipped and trained individuals and organizations with the specific tools and methods needed for research design. International collaboration to advance research Through this project, Makerere University's School of Gender and Women Studies and the College of Agriculture and Information Sciences will work with Cornell University to: -assess the current status of gender capacity and gender responsive agriculture in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda -use the results of the analysis to develop a gender and agriculture training program for teams conducting agricultural research in the region -pilot the program and develop a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the gender responsiveness of research The training modules will be specific to agricultural research to increase uptake and effectiveness. Examples of the modules include gender and value chains, and gender and nutrition. Designed as a blended learning model, the materials will focus on biophysical and social scientists' needs, and combine face-to-face instruction with field work and online mentoring support. This project will help establi...sh a West African Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEO Health) Hub in environmental and occupational health. It will aim to enhance regional capacity and leadership for world-class research, training, and innovation to address national and regional health priorities. The hub will also inform policy development. Hazards in the informal economy Sub-Saharan Africa's informal economy contributes over half of the region's gross domestic product and supports 80% of the workforce. In West Africa, nine in 10 workers have informal jobs in economic activities related to agriculture, mining, transport, trade, and commerce. Many are regularly exposed to multiple environmental and occupational health hazards. There is little research or documentation related to the associated health risks and disease burdens, as well as a lack of scientific evidence to guide prevention and mitigation. To improve opportunities for better livelihoods in this vast economic sector, fast and sustained improvement in health and safety is critical. Research and training hub for West Africa This project will establish the hub under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The hub leverages existing strengths across Francophone and Anglophone countries. It is founded on a long-standing partnership between the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. It brings together a group of African and Canadian institutions, including: -Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology -Ghana's Ministry of Health -McGill University -Ecohealth Community of Practice for West and Central Africa (spanning Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal) -University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa Environmental and occupational health research The hub will enhance regional capacity for world-class research in environmental and occupational health in the informal sector. It will also build African leadership to guide national and regional policies for reducing environmental and occupational health hazards. The initial research focuses on documenting and reducing health threats associated with processing electronic waste (e-waste), small-scale gold mining, and air pollution impacts from the informal transport sector. All three economic activities produce significant levels of environmental contamination and pose elevated health risks to highly vulnerable workers in the informal sectors and their families.

This project creates the autho...rization for capacity building support to develop and manage the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). The fund aims to support the development of quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale farmers. It will also help ensure their use at scale.About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation FundThe LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.More specifically, the LVIF will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability, and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective research and public-private partnerships to accelerate the registration, commercialization, and use of vaccines. The research will also lead to a better understanding of disease dynamics and their impact, as well as the issues that constrain poor farmers from using vaccines. By bringing together all stakeholders - from farmers to researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and regulators - the LVIF will foster a vibrant and sustainable livestock sector in the target regions.Separate Project Approval Documents will authorize individual research projects and activities related to research uptake and scale up, program synthesis, and communication.

This project creates the autho...rization for capacity building support to develop and manage the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). The fund aims to support the development of quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale farmers. It will also help ensure their use at scale.About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation FundThe LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. This project creates the autho...rization for capacity building support to develop and manage the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). The fund aims to support the development of quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale farmers. It will also help ensure their use at scale.About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation FundThe LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.More specifically, the LVIF will support innovation and research to increase the efficacy, marketability, and use of existing vaccines, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective research and public-private partnerships to accelerate the registration, commercialization, and use of vaccines. The research will also lead to a better understanding of disease dynamics and their impact, as well as the issues that constrain poor farmers from using vaccines. By bringing together all stakeholders - from farmers to researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and regulators - the LVIF will foster a vibrant and sustainable livestock sector in the target regions.Separate Project Approval Documents will authorize individual research projects and activities related to research uptake and scale up, program synthesis, and communication.

Its goal will be to provide critical insight to the new Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF). About the Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund The LVIF is a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada), and the International Development Research Centre. It represents a joint investment of CA$57 million over five years to support the development, production, and commercialization of innovative vaccines against priority livestock diseases in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The LVIF will support innovation and research, develop new vaccines against priority livestock diseases, and build effective partnerships between vaccine researchers, the public sector, and the private sector. The goal is to make quality vaccines that are more affordable, available, and acceptable to small-scale livestock farmers, and to facilitate their use at scale. Priority diseases, market-ready innovations The project will support commissioned research to inform the program's selection of three to five priority diseases. It will also -assist with the development of the first call for proposals -help identify existing innovations that are almost market-ready and could be funded through the fund's fast-track programming -help identify key partners from the private sector, government, and civil society In addition, the project team will -prepare an Environmental Management Plan -prepare 20 disease monographs on previously identified diseases -prepare, organize, and conduct stakeholder consultations in selected countries -prepare a situation analysis on manufacturing capabilities in the focus regions -prepare a situation analysis on legislative, regulatory, and veterinary support systems in selected countries
