|
Pre-Cooked Beans for Improving... Food and Nutrition Security and Income Generation in Kenya and Uganda
more
|
Beans are an important food cr...op that contributes to nutrition security, income, and employment in Kenya and Uganda. While beans are traditionally consumed with little processing, this project will promote value-added pre-cooked beans as a means to advance food security, income generation, and environmental conservation. The use of pre-cooked beans is expected to reduce cooking time, energy, and fuel use. Value-added processing offers great potential for improved nutrition, food security, reduced energy use, environmental conservation, employment opportunities, and overall economic development. The project's whole value chain approach will include research on sustainable models for -increasing production and supply of beans suitable for pre-cooked processing -developing and testing pre-cooked bean products -promoting pre-cooked beans through innovative public and private partnerships The research project is a partnership between the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute and Uganda's National Agriculture Research Organization.

EAST AFRICAN GEOHEALTH HUB FOR... PREVENTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS
more
|
East African GEOHealth hub for... preventing environmental and occupational health risks
more
|
The burden of disease from env...ironmental and occupational health hazards and climate change is a growing concern in eastern Africa. A significant portion of this burden is preventable, but most countries in the region lack the research capacity to analyze environmental health risks and assess policy implications. In addition, government infrastructure for environmental health monitoring, regulation, and enforcement is limited. To tackle these multi-dimensional challenges, this project aims to establish a regional hub of training and research excellence in eastern Africa with Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The primary focus is to reduce the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which is responsible for high and rising rates of disease and death in the region. The project also addresses emerging occupational health and safety problems from climate change in agriculture. Pilot research aims to analyze and reduce occupational heat stress in key industries of the region (e.g., flower greenhouses), engaging industry to validate models for predicting current and future health risks to workers. The long-term objectives of the project are to build capacity and leadership in eastern Africa for conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary health research, extending a solution-oriented research portfolio to other countries, and addressing key priority problems in the region on environmental and occupational health. The project is being implemented under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The overall research component of the hub is led by Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Uganda's Makerere University, Maasai Mara University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya, and the University of Rwanda. The research component is closely integrated with a tailored training program for research leaders in the region headed by the universities of Southern California and Wisconsin-Madison.

The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security. It reviews and learns from the experience of the sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women's empowerment and gender equality. Findings are disseminated to stakeholders of the six sub-projects , as well as to policy-makers in Canada, development partners, and governments of low- and middle-income countries. Data is collected through field visits to six of the CIFSRF sub-projects, interviews with sub-project leaders, and review of secondary material for other projects in the portfolio of the 18 sub-projects funded by CIFSRF.

The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.

This project is part of DFATD'...s International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), which is within the Career Focus stream of the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP is designed to offer young Canadian post-secondary graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience through international development work.Douglas College provides 40 interns with the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and develop skills in a variety of health, community, and social service positions in the Masaka District of Uganda. Eight local non-profit organizations provide outreach placements during the two years of the project in the following areas: six maternal /child health, eight orphan and street youth, four physical and mental disabilities, six health literacy, and 16 community based education. Intern learning and integration of knowledge are supported by Ugandan partner supervisors, Canadian based mentors and the Douglas College project team.

Southeast Asia is undergoing r...apid agricultural intensification affecting crops, livestock and plantation forestry. Such agricultural change can be good for human health by improving food security, nutrition and income. However, intensification can also increase the risk of disease, exposure to agro-chemicals and loss of biodiversity. This grant will allow a consortium of research centres in China, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam to carry out research, capacity building, policy advocacy and networking on the links between changing agricultural practices and human health. At the same time, the consortium will endeavour to strengthen the emerging field of Ecohealth research and practice in Southeast Asia.

This project aims to increase ...economic opportunities for poor rural women and men, including ethnic minorities, in the province of TraVinh. The project contributes to developing and implementing key priorities of the province's five-year Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Development Plan. The project also aims to improve environmental sustainability and ensure gender equality. This project seeks to create a favourable business environment for SMEs by, for example, (1) simplifying the business registration process, (2) increasing access to finance and business development services, (3) improving the ability of SME managers to run their businesses, (4) increasing the production capacity of a number of businesses, and (5) improving the skills of the workforce in order to meet the labour needs of small and medium enterprises. The project also aims to improve SMEs' access to markets in about 20 targeted communities in Tra Vinh province by building priority small-scale infrastructure such as waste treatment facilities, inter-village roads and bridges to improve rural transportation. Finally, the project seeks to improve the ability of local government organizations (at the provincial, district and commune level) to support the development of SMEs. Through training, technical assistance and institutional development, the goal is for these government organizations to be better able to plan, budget, manage their finances, procure, and monitor activities related to SME development in the province.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth.

This Project is one element of... a program to build the forensic capability of the Palestinian justice system. In particular, the project seeks to develop the capacity of the Palestinian Authority (PA) to manage, utilize and sustain the system of forensic science and medicine services through improved institutional structure and governance. The project assists the ministries of Justice and of the Interior and the Palestinian Civil Police to develop appropriate organizational and governance structures, including providing leadership in developing and implementing strategic plans, quality assurance systems, defining roles and responsibilities, and ensuring the transparency of forensic results. The project provides training and mentoring to trainees in basic laboratory procedures, drug and physical trace examination, counterfeits and altered documents, firearms and tool mark identification. In the area of forensic medicine, the project aims to the number of fully trained specialist forensic physicians, at the same time as putting in place an education and training system in local universities to sustain the forensic medicine service in the future. A key feature of the project is the expansion of clinical forensic medicine services to deal with sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence cases./ Ce projet fait partie d'un programme visant à développer la capacité d'analyse judiciaire du système juridique palestinien.
