Scaling Up Improved Legume Tec...hnologies in Tanzania (CIFSRF Phase 2)

Despite the well-documented ad...vantages of improved legume technologies, adoption is slow. Constraints include the lack of information reaching farmers, along with the availability and affordability of high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and Rhizobium inoculants. This project aims to resolve these limitations to make the technologies accessible to 100,000 small-scale farmers from six districts across Tanzania. Increasing awareness and adoption The project team will use a multimedia approach to inform half a million farmers about the benefits of the improved legume technologies. Tactics include interactive radio campaigns, social media, smartphone messaging, and voice telephony. Researchers expect that approximately 20% of farmers will adopt the new technologies. The team will also conduct subsidized farm-level trials, hold farmer-to-farmer demonstrations, and organize field days. Hub agro dealer model The project will use a hub agro model, which places agricultural dealers at the centre of their communities. This allows smallholder farmers to reduce transportation costs and makes inputs available locally. The project team will train at least 30 hub agro dealers on the technologies so they can instruct a larger number of smaller-scale agro dealers operating across the target regions. Research partners will develop local capacity to ensure that the Tanzanian radio stations, designers, and writers can run similar campaigns in the future. Innovation in legume technologies By improving yields and reducing production costs, the project will increase family incomes and contribute to better nutrition of rural and urban households in Tanzania. This will allow them to consume a wider variety of legumes rich in protein and nutrients. The project will also inform better policies that promote community-based seed systems with high-quality standards. A consortium will implement the project. It includes the following organizations: -African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership in Tanzania -Farm Radio International -Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau International Project funding This project is funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF), an IDRC program undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (formerly Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada). oject

The project aims to improve th...e well-being of women and girls through evidence-based gender-sensitive policy and programming recommendations on sustaining and scaling up innovations for food and nutrition security. It reviews and learns from the experience of the sub-projects funded under the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) Phase 2 project, with special attention to their sustainability and prospects for scaling up, as well as their positive impact on women's empowerment and gender equality. Findings are disseminated to stakeholders of the six sub-projects , as well as to policy-makers in Canada, development partners, and governments of low- and middle-income countries. Data is collected through field visits to six of the CIFSRF sub-projects, interviews with sub-project leaders, and review of secondary material for other projects in the portfolio of the 18 sub-projects funded by CIFSRF.

The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.

Southeast Asia is undergoing r...apid agricultural intensification affecting crops, livestock and plantation forestry. Such agricultural change can be good for human health by improving food security, nutrition and income. However, intensification can also increase the risk of disease, exposure to agro-chemicals and loss of biodiversity. This grant will allow a consortium of research centres in China, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam to carry out research, capacity building, policy advocacy and networking on the links between changing agricultural practices and human health. At the same time, the consortium will endeavour to strengthen the emerging field of Ecohealth research and practice in Southeast Asia.

At the same time, the consortium will endeavour to strengthen the emerging field of Ecohealth research and practice in Southeast Asia.

Southeast Asia is undergoing r...apid agricultural intensification affecting crops, livestock and plantation forestry. Such agricultural change can be good for human health by improving food security, nutrition and income. Knowledge sharing seminar on i...nnovations enhancing food security, nutrition and livelihoods
more
|
In the region of North Africa,... marginal ecosystems are predominant and are home to a large rural population depending on rainfed farming systems for their livelihoods. In these ecosystems, food security is a continuous challenge, exacerbated by climate change and variability. In Tunisia, there is an enabling policy environment to enhance the role of the agricultural sector and to support innovations improving the livelihoods of communities living in marginal ecosystems. However, more research is required in order to address the challenges associated with scaling up agricultural innovations to achieve impact at scale. The planned seminar aims to share knowledge and information on three agricultural innovations with the potential to enhance food security, nutrition and livelihoods in marginal areas of Tunisia with the national government. Success stories will be shared from two IDRC-funded projects on: 1) the use of interactive communication and knowledge sharing tools developed in a multi-stakeholder public private partnership to improve the livelihood of small farmers in Egypt and 2) the design, pilot and scale up of business models to promote the production and consumption of the health-enhancing probiotic fermented yoghurt in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. ICBA (International Center for Biosaline Agriculture) will also be invited to present their initiative on Quinoa for marginal environments: towards future food and nutrition security. An audience of approximately 50 people representing the public and private sectors, research institutions and donors community will be participating in the seminar, to be held in Tunisia under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources & Fisheries.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet l'envoi de 102 conseillers volontaires en mission.

This project supports the Worl...d Food Programme's (WFP) school feeding program. Over the past four decades, WFP has become the world's foremost provider of school meals to poor children. In addition to providing free midday meals, WFP provides students with take-home rations for the family, which encourages parents to send their boys and girls to class. School feeding initiatives target the most food-insecure areas of countries with low school enrolment, irregular school attendance, and high primary school drop-out rates.GAC's support to WFP's school meal program is used to purchase, deliver and distribute nutritious food primarily to school children, particularly girls. School feeding is a means of increasing enrolment and attendance rates, decreasing drop-out rates, and improving children's concentration, learning and academic performance./Ce projet appuie le programme d'alimentation en milieu scolaire du Programme alimentaire mondial (PAM).

INSECT FEED FOR POULTRY AND FI...SH PRODUCTION IN KENYA AND UGANDA
more
|
Insect Feed for Poultry and Fi...sh Production in Kenya and Uganda
more
|
In many African countries, pou...ltry and fish industries are among the fastest growing agri-businesses. However, expensive inputs such as fish and plants used as feed ingredients are threatening producers' survival. This project aims to address the problem. The researchers want to achieve long-term food and nutritional security by using insects as a reliable, sustainable, safe, and cost-effective source of protein and other nutrients. Their goal? To improve feed production for small-scale poultry and fish farming enterprises in Kenya and Uganda. In nature, insects are feed sources for fish and poultry. They are known to have higher protein content than conventional fish and soybean meals. Insects serve other important purposes. They can be used to convert different types of organic waste materials into animal biomass rich in proteins. This biomass can later be used in animal nutrition, an environmentally friendly way to recycle organic waste. Since protein is the most expensive ingredient in poultry and fish diets, feeding them with insects is a viable option. The study will use a multidisciplinary approach with qualitative and quantitative research methods. The research team will test the technical feasibility and economic profitability of insect-based feeds with the aim of creating favourable social and political conditions for these feeds. Their product development research will evolve based on factors that are critical to success: end-user needs and perceptions, market demand, business, innovation, and technology management. The project will follow a multi-aspect approach to product development that combines socio-economic, technical, laboratory, and field research with regulatory policy. The 30-month project is a partnership between Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology in Nairobi, Kenya.
