Research quality assurance and... research ethics standards for think tanks
more
|
IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (...TTI) provides capacity development support to TTI-funded think tanks to strengthen their capacity in research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement and communications. By providing tailored support to address specific capacity gaps, TTI is seeking to add value to the long-term core funding provided to the think tanks. Drawing on assessments of grantee needs, TTI will implement regional capacity development plans that balance demand-led and supply-led opportunities. This project aims at enhancing research quality standards in participating institutions and stimulating their adoption of international research ethics guidelines as part of their standard research procedure. Using a participatory approach, the Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales (ASIES) (Association for Research and Social Studies) in coordination with the Latin American Initiative for Public Policy Research (ILAIPP) network, will deliver training activities open to grantee think tanks. The first activity will consist of a diagnostic exercise aimed at identifying strengths and weaknesses in research-quality assurance systems of participating institutions. This diagnostic will reveal the dimensions and indicators of research quality as defined by institutions themselves. Subsequently, institutions will be guided, through webinars and a discussion forum, to identify parameters of research excellence that best match the kind of research they conduct. The second set of activities will support institutions in developing research peer-review systems. Participants will be provided with introductory material and accompaniment to develop formal peer-review procedures and to build researchers' capabilities to become effective reviewers. Another set of activities will support institutions to adopt research ethics guidelines as part of the formal research procedures. Finally, an after-action review will be conducted in which participants will evaluate their work during the project. This project is expected to raise participant institutions' research quality standards and strengthen researchers' capabilities. The results of the after-action reviews will be compiled in an open document to share lessons learned at the end of the project. The Think Tank Initiative (TTI) is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions, helping them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CHILD M...ARRIAGE AND PARENTHOOD IN ETHIOPIA, INDIA, PERU AND ZAMBIA
more
|
A comparative study of child m...arriage and parenthood in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Zambia
more
|
The aim of this project is to ...enhance the understanding of the complexities of child marriage and parenthood to inform policies and programming. The project will generate new evidence of international relevance, and by taking a comparative approach, it will contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycles of poverty and gender inequality. Studies to date have emphasized the drivers and immediate consequences for mothers and their infants. By taking an approach that emphasizes life course poverty and gender inequality, this project will help uncover how interventions in health, education, violence, and livelihoods need to be adapted to meet the needs of adolescent parents or children who are married, in order to have a positive effect on girls' and boys' trajectories. The overall research will be led by Young Lives (University of Oxford). The research will be undertaken in collaboration with Child Frontiers (Zambia) and Grupo de Analisis para el Desarollo – GRADE (Peru). A socio-ecological life course perspective will guide the research, which will use mixed methods, including quantitative as well as participatory approaches. It will also use a relational approach to gender and generation, examining the relationships, power structures, and norms and practices that influence adolescents' and young people's transitions, not only in terms of motherhood and marriage but also with respect to boys, marriage, fatherhood, and the formation of new households. To ensure uptake, an innovative engagement plan will be developed that involves key stakeholders from the outset, especially those drafting policies related to Sustainable Development Goal #5, Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Improving Environmental Manage...ment of Mining and Energy Activities in Peru/Améliorer la gestion environnementale des activités minières et énergétiques au Pérou

|
This project aims to streamlin...e how the Peruvian Government handles environmental impact assessments for mining and energy projects while strengthening the rigour and analysis of these assessments. Specifically, the project intends to consolidate the leadership role of the Ministry of the Environment over environmental issues related to large mining and energy projects and strengthen the capacity of regional governments responsible for handling the environmental impact assessments of small and medium-scale mining projects. Key activities include: participatory diagnostic of the current normative framework for the environmental assessment and management process; technical assistance to key stakeholders for the development of employees training program in environmental management; operational and technological support for environmental management and enforcement./ Ce projet vise à simplifier et à rendre plus rigoureuse la façon dont le gouvernement péruvien gère les études d'impact environnemental liées aux secteurs minier et énergétique.

This Volunteer Cooperation Pro...gram sends 102 volunteer counsellors abroad. Its overall aim is to increase the protection of human rights in vulnerable communities, specifically to increase the skills of local partners in protecting these human rights. To reach these objectives, technical support and methodologies will be provided, activities that strengthen local partners' capacities will be led, good practices will be shared and more professional services will be rendered to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable people and provide partners with the institutional support they need for legal diagnosis and legal practices. The program also includes a public engagement component aimed at the legal community, including lawyers, judges and law students, as well as stakeholders that protect the rights of vulnerable people, informing them about international development issues and sharing lessons learned by volunteers./ Ce programme de coopération volontaire permet l'envoi de 102 conseillers volontaires en mission.

more
|
In Peru, marginalized adolesce...nts face significant barriers to completing their secondary education, which perpetuates their social and economic exclusion. This project aims to support young people, especially indigenous adolescent girls, to exercise their rights and achieve their full potential. This is achieved by improving the education system, namely the curricula and the services offered in schools in order to encourage adolescents to complete their secondary education. The project also aims to improve the health and protection services offered to vulnerable adolescents, in order to ensure an environment conducive to their learning and development. The project aims to ensure adolescents are involved in making decisions that affect them, through social media platforms and artistic expression mechanisms. The project is implemented in two Amazonian regions (Loreto and Ucayali), in one Andean region (Huancavelica) and in the poor suburbs of Lima.

This project is part of the De...partment of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) International Youth Internship Program (IYIP), funded by the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy (YES). The IYIP contributes to the YES by providing a large spectrum of Canadian graduates with valuable international development work experience abroad, needed to launch successful careers.Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland provides 40 Canadians interns with internships in five countries: Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, South Africa and Malawi. The overall focus of the internships is on sustainable environment stewardship. Internships have specific focus on increasing food security, stimulating sustainable economic growth and securing the future of children and youth.

more
|

EAST AFRICAN GEOHEALTH HUB FOR... PREVENTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH RISKS
more
|
East African GEOHealth hub for... preventing environmental and occupational health risks
more
|
The burden of disease from env...ironmental and occupational health hazards and climate change is a growing concern in eastern Africa. A significant portion of this burden is preventable, but most countries in the region lack the research capacity to analyze environmental health risks and assess policy implications. In addition, government infrastructure for environmental health monitoring, regulation, and enforcement is limited. To tackle these multi-dimensional challenges, this project aims to establish a regional hub of training and research excellence in eastern Africa with Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The primary focus is to reduce the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollution, which is responsible for high and rising rates of disease and death in the region. The project also addresses emerging occupational health and safety problems from climate change in agriculture. Pilot research aims to analyze and reduce occupational heat stress in key industries of the region (e.g., flower greenhouses), engaging industry to validate models for predicting current and future health risks to workers. The long-term objectives of the project are to build capacity and leadership in eastern Africa for conducting cutting-edge multidisciplinary health research, extending a solution-oriented research portfolio to other countries, and addressing key priority problems in the region on environmental and occupational health. The project is being implemented under the Global Environmental and Occupational Health initiative led by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Canada's International Development Research Centre. The overall research component of the hub is led by Ethiopia's Addis Ababa University in collaboration with Uganda's Makerere University, Maasai Mara University and Great Lakes University of Kisumu in Kenya, and the University of Rwanda. The research component is closely integrated with a tailored training program for research leaders in the region headed by the universities of Southern California and Wisconsin-Madison.

HARNESSING BIG DATA TO MEET TH...E SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS - BUILDING CAPACITY IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH

|
Harnessing Big Data to meet th...e Sustainable Development Goals - Building Capacity in the Global South
more
|
Large volumes of complex and v...ariable data - often called 'big data' - promise to help improve government service delivery, complement official statistics, and facilitate development in sectors such as health, urban development, transportation, and humanitarian response. Data now stream from daily life: from phones, credit cards, and televisions; from the infrastructure of cities; from sensor-equipped buildings, trains, planes, buses and factories. The data flow so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years—a zettabyte—dwarfs the prior production of data for the entirety of human civilization. Interest in capturing and analysing these data sets for public purposes - big data for development (BD4D) - is still relatively new, but accelerated when the post-2015 development agenda called for a data revolution to draw on existing and new sources of data to monitor progress on the new Global Goals.Though big data sets, such as purchase-transaction or mobile usage data, are not new, until recently limitations on computer memory, retrieval and processing meant that only institutions like the US National Security Agency and American Express could afford the supercomputers necessary to analyse the huge volumes of information. Declining prices and improved functionality for hardware and memory have democratized data usage, and open-source tools (such as Hadoop) have broadened the mechanisms for people to conduct big-data analytics outside of proprietary and expensive software packages. Interest in BD4D has produced a great demand for computer scientists and statisticians who can understand and analyse large data sets. Yet, as big data scientists are in short supply in developing economies, much of the BD4D research is coming from northern institutions - the United Nations and World Bank, universities and from the private sector [such as IBM and Orange]. This dynamic has meant that the issues deemed significant to the debate tend to be driven by northern concerns, rather than by southern voices and global South collaboration. The same can be said for big data's relationship to gender. The vast majority of data scientists are men, who rarely focus on designing applications that address women's challenges in the Global South. As such, solutions need to be found to address inequalities in capacities and benefits to big data. This grant will support research on big data for development that supports developing countries to measure progress on and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is a proposal jointly presented by LIRNEasia , a Sri Lankan think tank, the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico Internacional –CEPEI, a Colombian think tank. The network will develop capacity amongst researchers from the Global South, focusing on activities linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to those that address gender related issues. Over a two-year period

This funding will help strengt...hen the Consortium pour la recherche économique et sociale's (CRES) role as a credible public policy institution in Senegal by enhancing its ability to provide high-quality, influential, and policy-relevant research.About the Consortium pour la recherche économique et sociale CRES was created in 2004 at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop by a multidisciplinary group of researcher-teachers. Its mission includes building research and analysis capacity in economics and the social sciences, as well as informing decision-making on social and economic questions.CRES' research priorities include the analysis of poverty, growth, and equality issues, local development, regional integration and globalization issues, economy of information (information and communication technologies), and economy of human resources (education, health, and population). CRES receives its funding from the Think Tank Initiative (TTI).Support to think tanks worldwideTTI is a multi-funder program dedicated to strengthening independent policy research institutions, or think tanks, in developing countries. The program aims to enhance their ability to provide sound research that informs and influences policy. This second TTI phase (2014?2019) will fund 43 institutions. This will help them consolidate their role as credible development actors in their countries, and in some cases, regionally and internationally. For CRES, this project will help enhance its research quality, organizational performance, and policy engagement. Improved research, better performanceThrough this support over the next 4.5 years, CRES is expected to-reach higher research standards by recruiting and retaining qualified research staff, implementing a code of ethics, and involving external peer reviewers in research and dissemination activities-maintain administration and financial management processes and procedures, including regular account audits, and adherence to IDRC financial reporting requirements-position itself on a path to long-term sustainability by diversifying and expanding its funding sources-follow measurement and evaluation processes to ensure that internal targets are met and to inform CRES of the impact of its work-contribute to public policy discussions and decision-making on aquaculture development and agricultural subsidies in Senegal

The project aims to improve th...e food security status of people living in poor rural communities in Ghana, Mali, Sierra Leone and Senegal. The project will work to increase the adoption of agricultural practices that promote sustainable livelihoods; improve the utilization of health food especially by women and children; and, increase the effectiveness and use of agricultural extension services. Specific activities include: training farmers on best animal husbandry practices, seed production, pest management and early disease detection; as well as the training of government rural extension service staff in planning, implementing, and monitoring projects together with the participation of local communities and farmers. The project is expected to reach around 45,000 subsistence farmers and their families and around 1,400 members of farmer associations and purchasing groups, as well as local agriculture authorities.

This project seeks to enhance ...food security or access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food, reduce poverty, and create sustainable livelihoods through agro-ecological farming. Agro-ecological farming applies ecological principles to the design and management of sustainable agriculture systems that may be based on traditional knowledge or alternative agriculture. The project beneficiaries are 2,100 subsistence farmers in the Gambia and 900 in Senegal living in ten vulnerable agrarian communities, as well as 9,000 subsistence farmers located in surrounding communities. Some specific project objectives include: (i) training rural communities in Community Based Organisation and Participatory Planning for sustainable community development; (ii) developing the use of resource-efficient ecological farming methods and systems by women and men; and (iii) improving women and men farmers' food security, nutrition and ability to earn a living by improving access to better plant material resources for food, fodder and soil management. This project is harmonized with national development and poverty reduction strategies, including the Gambian and Senegal Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers, the Gambian Vision 2020, the Senegalese Food Security Strategy, and national objectives relating to agriculture and food security. The project aims to improve fo...od security, income and health in sub-Saharan Africa by helping farmers and SMEs to take advantage of the regional commercial opportunities of the bean crop. The initiative will address the root challenges farmers and SMEs face in accessing markets in targeted bean corridors, such as a lack of skills, finance, information, insurance, infrastructure and organizational capacity by 1) Facilitating linkages and partnerships among value chain stakeholders through bean innovation platforms and enhancing business skills and collective marketing; 2) Facilitating access to market services (information, finance, training, infrastructure, seeds, fertilizer) and advocating support from key actors (NGOs, governments, etc.) for programs benefitting farmers and SMEs in the bean industry; and 3) Supporting bean producers to meet production volumes and quality standards./ Le projet vise à améliorer la sécurité alimentaire, le revenu et la santé en Afrique subsaharienne en aidant les agriculteurs et les PME à profiter des débouchés commerciaux régionaux de la récolte des fèves.
